I have lived near this place for a long time and have really wanted to try it. So I stopped in and was really impressed with it for a Sarasota restaurant and a shopping center restaurant at that! The miso soup was delicious and the right price. I only got two rolls and sashima. There are loads of good "crowd pleaser" rolls with loads of tempera, but I was sad not to see more non tempera or non-cream cheese rolls. I have found that to be a trend in Sarasota so it must be successful. All in all I really enjoyed it for a local place and appreciated the prices! I'm happy to find somewhere close by that I can trust when I have a craving for sushi. I was also impressed by the place and atmosphere. It was pretty busy even for a wednesday night and everyone seemed really comfortable. I would have happily sat at the sushi bar if I'd had time. All in all, it's worth a try and just get over the location. Plaza and strip malls are where a lot of the best stuff are in Sarasota.

Great service, amazing sushi. Owner Daniel and Jane are the sweetest people that I have ever met!! For people who can't have seaweed, they have a roll without the seaweed. You can not help but going back there over and over again.

J-Pan is claiming to be "The best Sushi bar in town", I had checked out Chef Judy Gallagher's blog in our local Sarasota Magazine, for those who don't know, she is our local foodie. I usually enjoy all or most of her comments & recommendations. We tried several J-Pan rolls including The Tropical that was salmon & banana tempura topped with avocado & passion fruit sauce; interesting!! $9.00. The paradise had smoked salmon avocado cream cheese (ewww) & kiwi $9.00. Also tried The J-Pan roll that was a gut bomb, tuna, avocado, & cucumber, topped with tempura flakes spicy mayo & eel $9.00, oh don't forget the sashimi $4-$6, yeah, we were full!!! Very interesting menu, playing technoish music (is that even a word?), the place was dark with a large screen t v behind the sushi bar playing, Finding Nemo, or maybe they were just fish swimming? Service was okay, it was to dark to tell if it was clean or not, sushi had good flavor, and fair prices.

This is my sushi place of choice now in Sarasota (Pacific Rim has fallen off lately) but I have two quibbles. Firstly, try to go on a weeknight when the wait staff and sushi preparers are not so bombarded. It's a much more pleasant affair when you don't have to wait so long for your food. Granted, when the food finally arrives it is first rate! The fish is super fresh and nigiri lovingly assembled. I would hope in future they will print up and provide a laundry list from which to order ala carte more easily. Secondly, my Yelp app offered a coupon for a free appetizer once checked in. Neither the waitress or the on-duty manager knew what this was about (or much cared even when shown the offer right there on my phone). Furthermore, there was no stipulation about which appetizer the checked-in customer could redeem off the menu. When pressed, our server got word from on high that the only appetizer I could redeem was a small bowl of edamame. I make this for myself all the time so I know that this free gift from J-Pan was setting them back a good ¢35. It might be harsh to call this a "bait and switch" tactic but it is seafood after all...

I have a weekly lunch appointment here and have never been disappointed. They have very good low carb rolls and some inventive regular rolls. This is one of our stand-bys for any time we feel like sushi.

For such an out of the way location J-Pan does very well. And so it should as the food is excellent. Sushi is excellent but my favorite dish is the Volcano Chicken.

I accidentally found Jpan a few months ago, when the big sushi sign caught my eye. We sat at the sushi bar and chatted with the chefs all night. The service was awesome and they had the best sushi ever! So fresh and the rolls are all so unique. I can't see why anyone would go anywhere else. Jpan is truly a place I would go with my family all the time. It's all family and friends so the staff and food is amazing.

We've eaten here three times now and every time the food is excellent and the service is fantastic! We went for lunch today and had the Bento boxes! Incredible deal... was less than $10 for a BEAUTIFUL BENTO BOX! Highly recommend! IMHO Best Sushi in Sarasota.

Jpan. Delicious. It's absolutely delicious, boos, real food. I love eating the sushi, teriyaki chicken, and tempura udon whenever I visit. Dee-lish I love the appetizers, the dessert, the drinks. Yum. I love ramune the drink. It's a carbonated soda, a fav. Of Asia. I think they should add Mochi ice cream to the dessert menu though to make it a little more authentic. But it's delicious. A bit pricey, but worth every penny. Yum.

I made the drive to Sarasota to check this place out because I heard that they have some basic Korean items on their menu. Plus, I love sushi. The location is hidden in the corner of the shopping center, luckily that is the first side that we drove in and were able to quickly find it. Otherwise, I usually grow impatient and would just drive off and go somewhere else. Since there are now plenty of sushi places to try in Sarasota. Upon walking into any sushi restaurant, I can tell if I am going to order raw fish or not. When entering J-Pan, I chose not to based on the case of fish at the sushi bar. We were there around 6:30 pm on a Wednesday night and there was only one other table seated. By 7:30, it was becoming quite crowded, good for them! I will give them a third star just because they were placing Korean R & B music, which reminds me of all of the Korean dramas that I love so much. The interior colors are black, red, and white- very striking. And, I love the photos on the walls. However, the food was not memorable... We were given free edamame from the chef upon entering, which was a very nice jesture, especially before having to indulge in their food. For our appetizer we had the Agedashi Tofu, the tofu breading was very soft and not crispy. All of the flavors were good, but I do not understand why they put the dashi broth on the side as a dipping sauce rather than putting the tofu in the dashi broth, where you would eat it with a spoon. As a dipping sauce; dashi does not hold it's own and you need more of it to get the flavor with the bite of tofu. I figured that since they are playing Korean music that someone must speak or be Korean, which means that they should know what Korean food tastes like. But, I seriously doubt it based on what they served us. The Chicken Bugogi was supposed to be spicy, but was super sweet and did not even taste like it had any gochujang in it, just a bunch of syrup. I wanted to ask the waitress, "Would you eat this?" I really do not feel that someone should serve you something that they would not find fit to eat. Not only that, but they did not completely rinse their rice so it had a weird chemical taste to it that was mouth numbing. The side veggies were onion, carrot, and broccoli steamed to a mushy consistency. The Beef Ramen ($10), was filled with beef bulgogi to the point where the entire did just became this milky concoction of sugary beef and onion with some noodles floating in it, we could only eat a few bites before getting grossed out. To be honest the taste reminded me of durian, minus the durian smell. The Sarasota Roll contained fried shrimp, then topped with cooked shrimp and avocado. It is really hard to mess up fried shrimp, and the roll was a little wet but decent. The Spicy Tuna Roll was also decent, but I wish there was more rice to fish ratio. I recommend only coming to J-Pan for sushi, because there other dishes really need some repairs. I understand that they have been open for less than a year, so maybe they are still working on a decent menu and food preparation. Hopefully, their food will improve and they will have great success with so much competition in the area. With places like Vizen, I really do not understand why someone would get Japanese food and sushi elsewhere. A table for two and $58.00 later, I feel like I could have spent that money on something much better.

I've been going to Lunch at J Pan for the last few months. It reminds me of some of the things and places I used to get Japanese food for lunch when I was growing up in LA. So there is a lot of primal memory for me here. I know Katsu-don is not "really" Japanese food. But when I was a teenager I loved those crispy panko covered bits of pork cutlet with that great sauce. J-pan's version brings me right back to those high school days. And the best thing? it is reasonably priced. The lunch specials run about $7 to $11 in a great bento presentation. When I first moved to Sarasota other Japanese resturants around town were charging $15-$18 of Katus-don! This is supposed to be cheap quick guilty leasure for lunch, those prices It killed me and I despaired of every finding those returns to old memories. So finding J-pan, getting this dish right at the right price (a quick cheap lunch) gives me a bit of joy. The lunch Bentos come with rice, california roll, some very nice spring rolls and some so so gyoza that are deep fried rather than pan fried pot sticker style. The gyoza seem to be out of a freezer bag. Sometimes they are really good and sometimes not so much. But I'll continue to come and be reminded of meals past. The sushi lunch special are very nice as well. Service is friendly, although the waiters they initially had (who have since left) needed a bit more training. I'm glad to say that problem has been solved and the current staff is excellent and friendly. I have not been for dinner but I plan to keep coming as long as they'll have me and my office mates.

If more than one of you at your table have a groupon and want to use it, forget it. They definitely adhere to the one per table rule! Their food is good. The waitstaff has the personality of rocks and being quick is not how they do business. Don't go unless you have time to be there for at least 1.5 hours.

This is my favorite sushi bar in town (they have to best ginger dressing). All the food is consistently great, the staff is awesome and the rolls are delicious and extremely fresh. The decor completes it, making you wanna hang out all night chowing down rolls and sake. This place is a definite must!!

Probably eat sushi 2-3x's/week, and love to try ALL the Sarasota spots, but always want to return to J-Pan, my favorite! Let me disclose that I usually do not order from the full, "cooked" menu, but prefer to sample small plates, specials, and rolls. So, if this is what you're into, I highly recommend! The specials of the day usually offer a sashimi, a sushi/roll, and an appetizer each under $10, and are incredibly fresh and creative. During this visit I sampled the hamachi damas (grilled yellowtail cheeks, served ponzu dipping sauce), watermelon tuna "hugs," with a splash a citrus glaze and a dab of wasabi, and a fiesta roll with brown rice. Perfection without fail! For variety, expert execution, and Cheers-like service, where everyone wants to know your name, this is the place. If you want cleavage, noise, fancy over-priced drinks, and sushi that disguises its freshness, go to that place on Hillview.

Bumping it up to 5 stars. Very consistent. Service, sushi, lunch menu...I keep coming back to J-Pan because there is no other place in SRQ that offers high quality raw fish at these affordable prices. A good example is Uni...it's always fresh at J-Pan and this is a delicacy that true sushi fans use as a benchmark for restaurant ratings. If you want authentic sushi...this is the place...

I love sushi and J Pan has become my favorite place in Sarasota to enjoy it. I have been to other places in Sarasota that have very good Sushi but none are as consistently good for the price as J Pan. The ambiance is very nice and they keep improving the decor. The wait staff is very personable and helpful. It is hard to find anything not to like about J-pan. I guess the one negative is you have to look a Publix loading doc as you walk in and its part of a strip mall with somewhat of a strange configuration.

Perhaps I ordered the wrong things. I was in town as a tourist and like I do, I start to crave Asian style noodles when traveling. I searched Yelp for Ramen. (Sarasotans don't Yelp, I've learned) JPan had the most promising reviews so I took my chances. I ordered: House salad with Ginger dressing House Ramen with chashu pork House sushi roll - "JPan" Roll The salad veggies were fresh and crisp. The dressing didn't taste like ginger at all and way too sweet. There was no depth of flavor. (I picked up a bottle at Publix and read HFCS as a main ingredient, perhaps this is the same here) The ramen was incredibly disappointing. CupO'Ramen have better noodles and soup, unfortunately. The broth was bland. The noodles were over cooked and oddly short. Normally, when you grab a mouthful, they drag to the bowl, but half of my strands were dangling by the chopstick...(someone suggested this was to accommodate eaters with forks...) eck. The only ingredient that was worth enjoying was the chashu pork, but I have to point out that is a Chinese-style meat and probably purchased from elsewhere. So, I really had my fingers crossed on the House sushi roll. It's got the restaurant name on it! Also, most reviews raved about rolls. One note, I did take this to-go and ate this about 10 min later. Also note, this was with me in air conditioned places, except for the 2 minutes it took me to walk in and out of my car. The roll had tempura bits sprinkled on top, which were so very stale. I can blame humidity...but I think it was stale to begin with. The roll already had a sauce on it, something akin to Teriyaki sauce...but it was over sweet and had no depth of flavor. The soy sauce that they provided also tasted like it had HFCS in it. So, the lesson I learned is that JPan believe Sarasotans love HFCS. The server I had was polite.

I went for lunch and ordered the sashimi lunch special, it came with soup or salad. I had the salad which had a weird black thing that looked like an insect leg on top of it! The server just took it back and brought another, as if it that first one didn't ruin my appetite. I didn't run out of the place screaming because it would have been very rude to do this to my table mates.

I ordered the Under the Sea roll which was delicious! and had amazing texture. and I would love to have it again. But I also ordered the Ninja roll, which was weirdly soft. And the only actually disappointing sushi I've ever had. I actually ordered an eel roll after to cleanse my palate and cheer myself up. It's okay. My roommate raves about this place, and it didn't quite live up to the hype. But I wouldn't say no to going here again, mostly for the Under the Sea roll.

Tried J Pan for the first time last night and was impressed. My husband, our young son, and I went there for dinner. First of all, I like that it's "family friendly" (kids menu, Wikki Sticks for the kids to play with) without being obnoxious about it. Service was very friendly and helpful (she described the Japanese soda options and showed my son how to work the bottle), food arrived in a timely manner (sometimes tricky when getting sushi), general atmosphere is cool & contemporary. I will admit we were a bit concerned that the sushi chefs weren't Japanese... is it racist to assume one needs to be Japanese to make good sushi? Regardless, our food was all well-prepared, fresh, tasty. I had wakame salad, tuna kobachi, and an Arizona roll (fresh yellowtail with scallions and massago); my husband had an assortment of nigiri. My son's kid's meal was also really good - a bento with teriyaki chicken (he "hated it" and chose to eat some of our tuna and salmon instead, so my husband and I happily ate it for him), vegetables, gyoza, rice, and orange slices. It came with the aforementioned Japanese soda and was IMO a great value at $7.95. Personally I found the prices to be in line with what we typically pay for sushi. Yeah, it costs a lot but it's delicious, so what are you gonna do?

Nice restaurant: decor, music, outdoor tables, service, food. Bit hard to find; it's not right off 41, drive around Petco shopping ctr and it's on the back corner. Lunch specials are good deals. Bul gogi bowl (Korean dish) was great. Perfectly sweet and tender meat. Sushi rolls are heavy on rice, light on fish. Even the end pieces were almost all rice. Guess you get what you pay for. Had to get a sashimi order to offset it. The ginger dressing had a heavy soy sauce flavor. I'd recommend coming here for their entrees vs sushi unless you get nigiri or sashimi.

This place was nice surprise! Sushi was fresh, pretty and the flavors of their specialty rolls were tastily balanced! The ramen soup also smelled great and our friend said it was very good. Only critique was that the wine by the glass was a little expensive for the pour, but that might depend on who is serving!

Variety of sushi for moderate price. Have been there a few times - fish was fresh, rolls well made without economy on main ingredients (fish or seafood). Miso soup was decent. Not too noisy, what I like when I go out. If you want a nice evening, sushi, and do not have a fortune to spend - check this place.

Sushi is highly subjective in America.......it's very popular to eat and Americans definitely have developed their own set of criteria to determine what is good. Some like the cooked rolls and some like traditional raw. Fancy or plain, rice or low-carb, so many choices. What I can say about J-Pan is that they can suit anyone's taste , it's always good and the service is good as well. I am fond of their very long list of American friendly rolls as well as their bento box. Never a bad meal and it always arrives at the table with a smiling face.

Wonderful, creative and delicious food, friendly and attentive service and pleasant atmosphere. Except for the TVs. I would have given this restaurant 5 stars if not for the two giant screen televisions playing football games and distracting my eye from my companions. The other room may not have them, but I didn't pick the table. As for kids, the staff welcomed my children and provided them with something to do. Our waitress always treated them as individuals, speaking to them and not asking me what they wanted. Our youngest is 3 and very active and I would say the restaurant is not suited to his age/temperament, but they did the best they possibly could and I spent a good bit of time running up and down the sidewalk outside, which worked out very well.

I haven't had sushi in a very long time so going out was a treat and thena major disappointment. We went to J. Pan this past Friday, October 26. We arrived when they opened at 5PM but the staff was still setting up. I ran to the bathroom.....if I were alone at this point and not with a guest, I would have left. The tolit looked liked someone threw up in it - I flushed it and the seat was spattered with whatever.....I got past that to sit down at our not so clean sticky table. We ordered seaweed salad which was a very small portion and was OK. We shared a large platter of mixed sushi which came with soup and a salad. I printed a $10 off $50 so we ordered another saki to meet the $50 only to learn it does cover drinks? So $55 + tip and I went home hungry. I know JPan is now in Lakewood Ranch, and were we always went to and the last visit we knew something was "off"...same owners.

This place was amazing!! To start the service was spectacular. The servers here are really nice and probably the most attentive out of the majority of restaurants I've been to. I really felt like they were looking out for me and making sure I was getting what I wanted. As for the food, I wish I could suggest something in particular but it's all so great. From the appetizers, to the rolls, to the desserts, everything here is so yummy. Sadly to say the outside of this place and even the whole plaza itself doesn't look like much, but once you step inside it feels great. The atmosphere is great for groups and not too overwhelming if it's just for two. All in all this place is five stars all around and I can't wait to come again!

Have recently been touring the sushi places in Sarasota. This one is more creative in its offerings (fruit in sushi) and also less exquisite in its flavor, sadly. Not that it's bad. I just like some other places better. But this place has a different vibe. It's more trendy and bigger & full of people (also a bit loud). There were more families than usual, too. So if you want, check it out, it may be more for you than it is for me.

I have loved the original J-pan since they first opened and each year they get better and better. Chef owner Daniel Dokko brings a vibe to his rolls and no one beats his volcano rolls - even the no carb rolls are delish enough to feel like a treat. Hearty soup eaters will want the ramen noodle soup bowl with char Su pork. omg - this is worth the visit alone. Plus our dogs love that they can be with us outside. Ask the sushi chefs to make you a scallop roll anyway they want to. Never disappoints me.

Excellent sashimi and chirashi! Tried a few bites of sushi and was equally impressed. Everything was extremely fresh and the sushi chefs take great pride in the presentation of their dishes. The atmosphere is great and unlike several other Japanese spots in Sarasota the tables are not right on top of each other -- there's nice breathing room. And it's not too noisy. I'm eager to return to try J Pan's tokotsu ramen and more sushi. Despite it being crowded on Friday night we sat up at the sushi bar and had great attentive service.

Excellent salad- the best japanese-style dressing I've ever eaten. Much like other traditional japanese dressing, but the loving care taken perfect the flavor. The best roll of the evening was the Origami roll ($12), a sweeter yet spicy combo made with rice paper instead of nori. The sushi chefs were very creative and took pride in making the festive dragon roll. Additional touches like star fruit garnishes were a welcome gesture that didn't go unnoticed. The Jpan beef dish ($17) had hints of Korean bugogi, but definitely Jpan's own interpretation. The finishing touch was the tempura cheesecake with ice cream ($6?). Simply glorious and fitting tribute to a finely-tuned restaurant operation.

I am a total fan of J Pan. In Sarasota we are lucky because of all the fantastic sushi we have. However, J Pan sits as a (tied for #1) spot in my book. Every roll, every layered flavor in each bite of sushi was perfect. The sushi was a work of art and the price was very affordable. The chefs are creative and the restaurant was busy while nearby restaurants were empty. The owners are delightful and full of knowledge and conversation. A tip is to ask about rolls that are not on the menu. There are a few "local favorites".

My boss loves J-Pan, so we eat here fairly often while we have lunch meetings. The lunch menu is incredibly reasonable (everything is right around $9 I believe), with several sushi combos and Bento boxes to choose from. I love the Bento box combos because you get chicken or whichever dish you choose, rice, 5 piece California roll, spring roll, pot stickers, and soup or salad. We even ordered takeout and ate at the office one day, and the food was still delicious. Can't remember now which rolls I've had, but they were all good. The staff is super nice and very attentive... I've had a great experience every time. I'm only withholding a star because I've never had dinner here, so I can't say much about anything other than their lunch menu.

This sushi is amazing. It is high quality & fresh. They have a great selection of rolls. Some of the rolls have mango, passion fruit glaze, & other delicious and different ingredients. I believe it is the best sushi in town. The atmosphere is relaxed, modern, & a little funky. It's a great place for a special occasion or a date.
