    I have been looking forward to eating at this restaurant for several months. Finally I had an event in Sarasota (I live in Tampa) and figured after the even would be a great chance to check it out. We got there at 9:05pm on a Saturday night. We approached the hostess stand and waited a minute while the hostess finished telling the server a story about her boyfriend. Finally she acknowledged us by making eye contacting. She didn't ask us how she could help or greet us etc. Finally i told her we are a party of two. She let us know that it was a busy night so the chef had decided to close the kitchen. I know in small, private restaurants like this the hours and flexibility are different than a more mainstream restaurant. However, 9pm on a Saturday night I found a bit strange. I will definitely be back because I've heard it's phenomenal so as soon as I go back this review will definitely get updated. I'm hoping this experience was just a fluke and we will be pleasantly surprised when we return. I hate to rate a place I haven't actually eat in, but I think this experience was worth noting.

    All and all, this was just an OK experience. Here is my review: Service: Our waitress was very friendly and competent. I complained about my main dish and she took it off the bill, along with the replacement dish, no questions asked. Bread: They gave us these weird 'swiss crackers' I believe they are called. There were so strange tasting, I took one bite and put it back in the basket. Yuck. Appetizers: We had the mushroom bisque and the pickled shrimp. Both of these dishes were excellent - superb. So much flavor and wonderful texture. I really enjoyed the truffle taste in the bisque. Don't miss this soup! Entree: I had the vegetarian special of the night, it was rice cooked with vegetables. The rice was hard and very bland. It wasn't edible in my opinion. Waitress gladly took it back and removed it from the bill and brought me the Quinoa salad instead. That was very good. However, the salad accompanying the dish had nearly inedible stems left on the leaves. My date had the fish dish and claimed it was 'underwhelming'. I might try this restaurant again much further down the road. I was really looking forward to their food, but the entrees were a big let down.

    This was my first time at Indigenous, and I enjoyed it very much. We had reservations for Friday night at 6, and were actually running about ten minutes late, but got seated right away with no problem. They only have beer and wine here. I tried a Shiraz which was very good. For my appetizer I had parmesan beignets. They were pretty good, but not amazing. Next time I would try something else. A friend had the shaved brussel sprouts salad for a starter, and that was my favorite starter. For dinner I had the cobia and it was delicious. My boyfriend had the mote marine sturgeon which was really great too. Deserts actually just seemed ok, nothing I can really rave about. Will definitely try this place again.

    Our first visit to Indigenous set the bar very high for our recent return. But any worries about meeting our expectations for a fantastic ambiance, service and food quickly vanished. Our server (Alberto this time around), was both extremely professional and personable and the evening was as magical as the last time we visited (back in September). One thing that impressed us during both visits is the waiters' depth of knowledge AND excitement about the menu. Once again, we enjoyed the very pleasant dining environment, the delicious offerings and the exceptional service. We love this place!

    The restaurant seems to have lost its past luster. Overworked dishes, HORRIBLE service, long wait, and rudeness all around. Pretentious and posturing for a small, local place putting on airs as if they were the top restaurant in NYC. Our friends weren't impressed, neither were we. There are many other places who don't take themselves so seriously and where customers are better served all around. And the food, mediocre at best.

    Great! Modern and creative but unpretentious, cooking with quality technique, excellent ingredients, and proper balance. Nice Work! I can't wait to come back to Sarasota so I can dine here again. My server, Adam was very knowledgeable, and his love of his job translated into making me feel very comfortable, effortlessly. Chef/owner also delivered a dish and chatted a bit. Great guy, talented and I wish them lots of success. Sarasota needs more places like this! Go here!

    Perfect for a large group dinner, intimate date, or a late night cap. You can't go wrong with the atmosphere of Indigenous - or the delicious food. We order the WillaKenazie Pinot (me being from Oregon, it is a must to drink) and each time our food is just incredible. The owners really strive for excellence and the team (especially Angie!) has exceptional service. My favorite place to sit is in the wine cellar along the back wall, you will love it!

    Outstanding... These guys are on it. Small, nightly specials-based menu. Entree menu changes 4 times a year with the local produce seasons and they only keep one or two year round favorites like the mushroom bisque (which was inhumanly good). Beer/wine list changes to suit new incoming menu items. We had the spinach puff (love to know how he achieves this texture), the bisque, the parmesian beignets, the house pickled peppers, the arctic char entree, the gulf shrimp entree, the kobia entree and the short ribs (another year-round keeper). Not one was better than the other and they served everything with serving spoons because it's inevitable that you will want to try everything on the table. We are going back this evening, our second round with only 4 nights to spend in Sarasota (even though we already ordered the whole menu). Portions are small but not annoyingly so. And they are priced right, nothing over $25 (they could easily get $35, it's casual, but definitely fine dining). In my opinion the slightly reduced portion size and the reasonable price tags just allow you to try more starters (most were $8.... Uncharacteristicly affordable for this area considering you will pay $15 for bait-grade peel n' eat shrimp anywhere on Siesta Key). Service was excellent. Knowledgable staff who werent afraid to make a recommendation. Its not helpful when a server says "everything is good", although in this case, everything IS good. The tiny kitchen is open to guests, the chef and his sous were wicked nice, and graciously accepted our compliments/were willing to chat with us for a minute even in the midst of dinner service. If you don't eat here while you're in Sarasota, you've made a mistake.

    I have been to Indigenous three times. Once for dinner, once for a Hundred Mile Dinner and once for 'staff dinner' - each and every time our meal has been wonderful and thoughtful. The atmosphere is lovely, old-florida and the staff is all very accommodating. I would say this is a can't miss stop for anyone visiting Sarasota!

    Excellent attention to all details. Savvy menu based on fresh, organic ingredients. Gluten free paradise. Wine list is compact but still offers great breadth and value. Little slice of trendy California hidden off the beaten path in Sarasota. Who knew?

    Let me tell you what I know of this chef. He wants to teach people about food. He wants people to understand flavor. He wants you to be surprised when you eat and he knows just how to make the flavors of his dishes unfold inside your mouth. Take each bite in a thoughtful way because Chef Phelps knows his food. I love that this restaurant is in a house and the Indigenous name is so perfect because over 80% of his food is locally sourced. (you know that's a winner for me). When you order fish (he calles it hook to plate) you hear the server say "this fish was caught by Captain __________ 100 miles of the shore of Sarasota. It was swimming in 150 depth water and was caught yesterday". Don't skip dessert. Every bite of every dish is amazingly wonderful. It's a food lovers delight.

    Summary: Two recent iffy visits. Wouldn't go again unless we get good new feedback from others. We're locals, and foodies at that. When Indigenous originally opened, we were really enthusiastic. Creative, beautifully presented food with a great taste quotient. We were there again earlier this month (for the 2nd time this year) with friends. It's gone off track. They still hit their locavore notes, especially in the verbal descriptions. All encouraging. And the plates still come out looking interesting - the vegetarian grain dish in a molded circle, the shredded brussels sprouts on a charming long thin plate - but the flavors did not shine and hit solid notes as much as they did in the past. Some dishes, while still having good texture, bordered on bland - to the point that they weren't worth finishing. One less food-adventurous person had the burger, and it was mushy. And the service. Servers here are usually very engaging and "into" the food and the preparations. This night, no. Service was lackluster, and painfully slow. While it took us 20-30 minutes to receive our drinks and to get our order in, the food took forever to come out. There was more than a 45 minute gap between serving the apps and (finally) getting the main courses. Dinner with just apps and entrees (no one wanted to invest the time to get dessert) was approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes. We felt like the lost table - and in fact did find a service person to ask if we WERE forgotten. It's the second time we've gone in 3 weeks (another set of friends wanted to go) and this last time was much worse than the time before - if we go again, it will be because others want to go, not because we'd choose it. At this price point, it's way too uneven -- the experience and food should be much more consistent and better all around, and we have many better options.

    Absolutely LOVED IT! My husband and I went here on our last night of vacation and we wished we had found the place at the beginning of our trip. Service - excellent! Dan was the best and gave us great wine recommendations. Laid back guy and just made the experience enjoyable for us. Ambiance - awesome. Um, they have a wine cottage! We sat outside on the front porch and it was so cute. Very romantic spot. Food - OUT OF THIS WORLD. Had the kale salad which was awesome and then the two fish specials: one was a white fish with a bacon component to it and the other was a seared tuna. Seriously amazing and we ate every last bite. Chef came out to give us his regards and he is the nicest guy and loves what he does. It is so refreshing to see Sarasota get some unique dining options. We're from Chicago and have some amazing restaurants here so it's nice to be able to travel and have wonderful experiences in places that aren't foodie havens. Who knows... maybe at this rate, indigenous will start the trend for Sarasota being a food destination too.

    Indigenous tries for upscale food in a relaxed atmosphere and pretty much succeeds. Note to tourists--no one drinks tap water in Florida--just get the bottled water. Shrimp entree pretty skimpy. Fish entree portions are more generous. Burger is a great choice--bacon jam! Desserts are excellent--esp. the ice cream. Wine list is good. Service is amateurish.

    A total mixed bag. Service was very friendly. My wife enjoyed her Parmesan beignets (so did I) which are so good they need to be on the dessert menu not the appetizers, as well as her fish entree which was prepared quite creatively. Unfortunately my experience was not good. As a first time diner, at the recommendation of our enthusiastic waitress I tried the mushroom bisque, and the short ribs, both of which were "chef specialties". The bisque was less like soup and more like the consistency of grey yogurt; not terrible but much too hearty for an appetizer. The short ribs were so heavy I barely slogged my way through half the dish. The waitress also recommended a glass of Argentinian Malbec which was so bad even she admitted it "smelled funny". She did remove it from the bill promptly. There are many better alternatives in Sarasota especially considering the pretentiousness of this place.

    I would say I'm between 3 and 4 stars when rating this restaurant. The food was good, but not so good I would return. We had the crispy duck appetizer and I had the "hook to fork" which was Cobia, my fiance had the short ribs. Everything was cooked well and the presentation was beautiful. The service was good. The short ribs were extremely tender. Everything was good, but nothing was outstanding. So I would say this is a restaurant where you will probably enjoy your meal, but I don't think you will be wowed.

    This place is stellar. I've lived in Sarasota for 12 years, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a more authentic, caring staff and interesting, progressive menu. Quiet, upscale atmosphere in Towles Court (prefect for an after-dinner stroll); thoughtful, diverse wine list.

    Finally had the time and opportunity to try this restaurant. Read some interesting reviews on Yelp. Every time I go to an expensive establishment like this one, it's going to be interesting to see how they execute the entire dining experience. And...Yes, I expected it to be very pretentious. Yes, it's going to be expensive. Yes, I fully anticipate the portion sizes will not be very impressive. Yes, the wine pours will be short and will make me frown. If your used to dining in Los Angeles and NYC, YES, you will most likely be be right at home. The Pretense: One of Webster's definition of pretense is: "as a pretentious act or assertion". And yes this place provides it by the tons. Although not quite the B-52 level of pretentiousness you'll find in hmmm...say Marina Del Rey. On a Sarasota sliding scale...it will be heavy. We did not have reservations. This will be the ultimate test. Ready for the barrage of insults, I braced myself for impact. They had some tables available, the hostess seemed somewhat pleasant. Pretense meter was reading "low".... That's the way these places are supposed to be I guess...as the name suggests all the ingredients are as "Indigenous" to the area as they try to make it. The geographic size of the "area" is the big question. The sauvignon blanc was from France (I guess that doesn't count). It was excellent. The fact that the wine was served to us from mini carafes that were the size of a thimble was to be expected. Pretense meter bumped up to "med".... We had a couple of appetizers. The pork belly appetizer stood out as the shining star. Cannot confirm or deny if it was "Indigenous". They said the mahi-mahi comes from Panama. We decided on the Cobia and the Sturgeon. The Sturgeon comes from the Mote Aquarium farm (I think it's near Myakka Park). The Cobia came from Miami. I would definitely count that as "Indigenous". Both fish were cooked to perfection. The only fail was the Sturgeon came with a brown rice risotto. This was a complete failure in terms of taste and concept. Brown rice really makes bad risotto, just like square shapes make bad wheels. It also had a vinegar taste to it, which the wife and I thought was strange. The Cobia had local potatoes, small bits of pork belly and a really nice heavy pea soup base. The flavors were perfect and went well with the Cobia. Pretense meter inched up to "med-high" due to thimble size wine pour (5 star price tag) and the audacity of trying to make brown rice risotto edible. No dessert...could not afford it. The service was outstanding. The wait staff's knowledge could take on any foodie, and even the folks that poured the water and bused the tables were the most professional staff I've seen in SRQ. Indigenous runs a tight ship in terms of who they hire. Overall, the dinning experience was a positive one. The food and service were great even with the minor pitfalls. The atmosphere was very nice, very west coast feel. A bit pricey for the quality of the cuisine...I give it a weak 4 stars (Is that pretentious enough?)

    Wow! Read about this place in a great article in "This week in Sarasota" and I was NOT disappointed. Knowledgeable servers (we worked Alberto who was EXCELLENT), incredible atmosphere (def bringing friends here..its casually eclectic and romantic), and off the chain cuisine! The ultimate triumvirate. Must haves: Parmesan Beignets and crispy duck appetizer. YUM. Chef is known for beef short ribs and I ordered that for my entree...succulent fall off the bone tasty. And the dessert! YUM! My hubs got a peach dessert with some kind of crazy rosemary biscuit underneath it..it was an unusual and excellent combination. Check it out...you will not be disappointed. And I will def be back.

    (Continued from previous) When the dessert menus arrived and I was not already stuffed, I was pretty excited about it. Not that being stuffed really ever stops me, but still. Gabriel and I decided, very quickly, on 'The Brownie' (toasted marshmallow ice cream, graham cracker dark chocolate brownie, belgian chocolate sauce.) My mouth is watering again just thinking about it. We thought it was interesting that both Indigenous and Derek's have their interpretation of S'mores on the menu. Coincidence or perhaps a bit of unspoken competition? In any case, it's just fine with me. As it turned out, they are really two totally different variations on similar ingredients and both are totally outstanding. The ice cream and caramelized marshmallows on top of the brownie (which was really a blondie as far as I am concerned) were creamy and dreamy. I'm kind of off in la la land just remembering it as I write this. The melty chocolate inside the brownie along with the crisp, graham pieces were oh-so-decadent. The dark sauce that was drizzled around the dish was the perfect icing on the cake, as it were. It's pretty rare that I don't love the final course of a meal, but there are certainly times like these when it's really just as perfect as can possibly be. My mom and step-dad, by the way, had the lemon/thyme pound cake with blueberries by the way- which I did taste. It was light and exactly as expected. Not particularly exciting. I did, however, also ask the waiter if by any chance he'd let me have a little taste of the special ice cream offered that night which was popcorn flavor. He obliged and WOW, it was really awesome. I was really pleased that he was kind enough to bring me my little spoonful sample. All that said, it wouldn't be an honest review if I didn't check back with reality for just one tiny second. For the most part, the service of this meal was totally on par. That said, there was just one problem at the end. When we ordered our desserts, my mother ordered a cappuccino and my step-dad, a regular coffee. My mom's came out right away, about 5 minutes later our desserts arrived. At that point, we reminded the waiter that my step-dad had ordered a coffee and he apologized and said he'd go right back to get it. 10 minutes later, we'd finished our desserts, but still, no coffee. We flagged out waiter down again and he explained that he had to make a fresh pot. It finally came out about 10 minutes after we'd finished our desserts and had our plates cleared. Timing is definitely an important part of service, and if I'm being fair, I really do need to deduct a star for that mistake. Other than that, everything was absolutely awesome and my experience definitely lived up to the high expectations I went in with. Bravo Indigenous. Can't wait to come back.

    Fun ordering experience/ food lecture. Had a drink in the wine bar while waiting and the staff there was great, too. We had to wait for our reservation because the table still had the last people at it - these guys may need to change the amount of time they block out between sittings.

    There is nothing I didn't love about this restaurant. The setting is charming: quiet and relaxing yet decidedly upscale. The service is impeccable -- our server was Adam, and he was knowledgable, attentive, friendly, and laid-back. There wasn't an ounce of pretension to be found in the place. And the food! OMG, the food. They were debuting their fall menu, and we managed to try a good bit of it. I can't remember everything, but our meals included arugula salad, shaved Brussels sprouts salad (literally the first time I've ever liked Brussels sprouts), mushroom bisque, Icelandic char with tarragon mashed potatoes, shrimp and red peas, duck reuben, and I think a shredded pork dish. Dessert included a cinnamon-chocolate shortbread and the house-made popcorn ice cream with bacon-caramel drizzle. Everything was *wonderful*. The dishes were all creative/unexpected, expertly executed and incredibly delicious. I turned up my nose at the thought of popcorn ice cream (after all, those popcorn-flavored Jelly Bellies are disgusting), but my mom smartly ordered it. OMG! You won't believe how good it is. Really, you won't believe how good everything is. I can't wait to go back.

    This is by far and away THE best restaurant in Sarasota. Everything was superb: food, wine, and service. The short wine list has outstanding wines, particularly The Porter Fab cab by the glass which you can also get by the bottle even though it's not listed on the wine list, and all the wines are only pennies over retail. The mushroom bisque is balanced and earthy and worth all the accolades others have given it. Husband had the parm beignets for a starter with a creamy center that makes them melt in your mouth. I had the local red snapper that was fantastic (server gave us the name of the boat from which it was caught), and hubby had the short ribs, falling apart tender and quite lean for ribs, served over horseradish and green apple potato salad that he actually really liked the contrast with the ribs (and he typically hates potato salad). We opted for the specials for desserts (grapefruit, cucumber, and basil sorbet and a light chocolate-malted ice cream) that were a perfect, light ending to dinner. Glad we didn't skip dessert. We'll be back.

    I heard they serve grass fed burgers, and remembered some review saying the best burger in Sarasota, so I thought I should give the place a try. Even the server said this would be the best burger ever... and I thought, well, we shall see about that! The server also said the burger would come medium to medium well cooked, as it has two thin patties. Anyway, I guess that's fine, although I wanted mine med-rare, but whatever. So, I ordered a glass of red wine and the pork belly as an appetizer. The pork belly was delicious and could have had more of it; it came on a bed of black eye beans and some okra, yummy, totally recommend it. Now the burger, as per menu description had cheddar, indigenous sauce ( a secret sauce according to the server, additional to another sauce, so 2 sauces total), some heirloom small halved tomatoes on the side, as well as cornichons and home fries. Although I like my burger plain, with no sauces, (no mustard, no ketchup for me, please!), I thought, what the hell, let's try it how it's made, maybe I'll be surprised. Bad idea, the burger was way too saucy for my taste, I couldn't even taste the meat, the char that makes a burger great was not there, or if it was, it was definitely overwhelmed by the saucy abundance which I couldn't figure out what it tasted like, maybe prunes, definitely fruity, though... So, I tried to finish it, but couldn't; my friend chowed down the rest. I should mention that he ordered a burger, too, loved it and thought it was very good (I don't trust his opinion anymore when it comes to burgers). Me, not so much! The home fries were not fries, just round sliced potatoes cooked in a skillet or a griddle, a little charred, lacking in moisture and flavor, another disappointment. Overall, I guess I have a problem with restaurants that try too hard to put a spin on a burger and thus fail to focus on the flavor of the meat inside a bun, with a good cheese on it, lettuce, tomato, and onion. Yeah, and don't forget the pickle, it's a must! And if you don't have a good pickle, don't serve any, please! So, the service was great, the pork belly was yummy, I liked my wine, but the burger, I'll give it 2 stars, with indulgence, I will not have it again, and it's not even close to the best burger I have ever had. One more thing, on the online menu of the restaurant, the burger is priced at $12, but actually is $14 at the restaurant. I believe $12 is pricey for a burger, even grass fed, but $14, really? I think the location and the ambiance are great and the menu looks pretty appealing, so I will go back and try something else.

    The bill that our waitress presented to us was EXACTLY double the actual dollar amount of our bill. When we questioned the waitress she didn't seem to know why it happened, and she NEVER apologized for the error. The next day we called and spoke to the owner about the error and he seemed to agree that what happened was strange. BE VERY CAREFUL TO CHECK YOUR BILL BEFORE PAYING!!!!!

    Just took my girlfriend to this restaurant last night. I have to say the landscaping and the building are amazing. However, the food is sub-par. It was very bland, and over-priced. The desert menu, is lackluster, and there is not enough entree choices. The staff was great. However, I will not be returning to this restaurant. Its to bad the decor is great.

    This place has food that is well prepared and nicely presented. The service is swift and attentive, without hovering. The menu is not large but should be able to satisfy a variety of tastes and wants. The Winter Strawberry Salad and Crispy Pressed Duck were great starters. For the entrees we had a burger and the daily veggie special, which in this case was a quinoa dish. Both were very good, with the sauce on the burger making it a standout. However, the veggie dish was a bit overpriced for what is was. We shared the Brioche (bread) pudding dessert and it was tasty. When we made our reservation we were informed we needed to be seated inside as the porch sitting was already booked. This seating was in the front parlor near the main door. While not too many folks opened/closed this door, the only other table in the room, a four top, was so close that everything said by the other party was clearly heard by us. It was a minor annoyance and i would NOT sit in this area when i eat at this place again. Otherwise a most enjoyable experience.

    Absolutely lovely setting - romantic ambiance. Nice wine list (wine & beer only) - reasonably priced. A good selection of wines by the glass. Attentive and efficient service. Ambitious and limited menu, but the elevator didn't make it to the top floors. We tried five of the "starters". The mushroom bisque was okay-lacked the intensity of flavor that you would expect from the description. Mango, lime, cilantro salad was refreshing and nicely presented - but again, lackluster flavor. Parmesan beignets were not fully cooked. Porkbelly and Hoppin' John - had high hopes here - meat wasn't crispy enough and the peas were bland. The crispy duck was just okay. Two of us had skirt steak entrees. Skirt steak was tough. Two had cobia - not pristinely fresh. Snapper was fresh but slightly overcooked. The accompaniments were uninspired. Desserts were a little overwrought and without the flavors in the descriptions. Overall - Trendy - trying hard - not covering the basics.

    Service is outstanding. The wines are very reasonably priced. Hook to plate equals the freshest of fish. To sum it up, without going into a longwinded review, one of the best Sarasota has to offer except in making a reservation as they will try to push you back to 6:30PM or earlier so that in season they can squeeze in that second seating. Don't let them play that reservation game and go elsewhere where the hostess answering the phone is more accomodating.

    I recently attended this restaurant for the first time from a local recommendation. I am so glad I took a risk and went off the beaten path to give this place a try. I have to agree with a previous review that this is what fine dining is all about. Exceptional food, presentation, service that is well versed and a comfortable, intriguing atmosphere. Coming from the service industry I place a high value in the service I receive and directly impacts my view and experience on the restaurant. The server was on point the entire time. Now keep in mind this place is relaxed so don't expect the server to be all over your table constantly. They are absolutely there when needed but are not overbearing. Refreshing. Our server was extremely knowledgeable about the restaurant, food, wine and overall culture of the area. Five stars right there. We started with the Ceviche and ordered the two specials. The Ceviche consisted of Cobia and Red Snapper and was served in a cute mason jar. The flavors were light and citrus, a perfect starter to what we were about to experience. The specials were out of this world. The fish was perfectly cooked and extremely fresh. Its compliments were perfect pairings and consisted of many flavors that were pleasant and intriguing. The chef here means business and you can tell the passion and detail he puts into each dish. Did I mention the presentation?! It was like we were at a five star resort and the VIP's of the evening. Compliments to the chef on everything. I also enjoyed a beautiful Sauvignon Blanc from France that was a nice compliment to each course. This is the perfect hidden place to have a quiet, relaxing nice and enjoy the gems of Sarasota.

    This place is AMAZING!!! The ambiance is SO romantic and beautiful and calming. The food is to DIE FOR. The mushroom bisque is orgasmically delicious. The parmesan beignets are light as air and the combination of cheese with pears is perfect. I am so glad that the chef is including "trash" Fish (=sustainable) in his menu. The Greater Amberjack with the truffle sauce was sooo good and the short ribs were fork tender amazing. Thank you, thank you Indigenous for this wondeful food!

    'Hook to fork' special of fresh snapper with remoulade, cherry tomatoes,, & frisée over fingerling potatoes was delicious (& gluten free!) My husband and I usually order different dishes so we can taste each others' meals, but this sounded so good we both ordered & loved it. Sat outside towards the bar area at a high top table with stools, which turned out to be quite nice, secluded & quiet for the 2 of us. Make reservations, though....we came on a Wednesday night around 6:30 & almost couldn't get seated. As long as there's room, you can order from the full dinner menu at the bar.

    Make your way to Indigenous! I've been wanting to try this restuarant for a while but whenever I would call for reservations they were booked. So on a whim I called this evening & the sweet & friendly hostess penciled me in. I had a difficult time figuring where to park when I arrive but this it the cutest & most romantic restuarant I've been to in the Bradenton/Sarasota area. As soon as I walked up I was greeted by name & seated on the patio per my request. I order the mushroom bisque & Parmesan beignets and let me tell you that these are THE BEST two things thy I've eaten here in FL thus far. I have about a half dozen (maybe more) bug bites but it was totally worth it. Every bit of food was worth every bug bite...LOL! The servers were pleasant and knowledgable. The music they played was smooth and relaxing. I can't wait for my next visit. To date this is my favorite restuarant in the area!

    The best meal that I have ever had was the shrimp dish from Indigenous. Can't remember the name, but I would come here again and again for that dish. The entire menu is unique and the flavors of everything I have tried here have all been incredible. Just be sure to make a reservation!

    We have been to Indigenous several times,and have never been disappointed. This time, I had the fabulous Brussels sprouts shaved salad, which is topped with very finely grated Parmesan. It was a perfect start to a wonderful meal. Next up was the "fish to fork" - in this case grilled wreckfish atop a bed of various beans and greens. My husband had grilled cobia in a green curry sauce. Everything was fresh, and a treat to the eye as well as to the palate. We highly recommend Indigenous.

    This was a recommendation from a colleague of mine and knowing her foodie tendencies, I really wanted to try this place. So glad that I did! The restaurant is located shortly after the split of the 301 and 41 - almost a neighborhood of homes that is slowly being converted into quaint and character-filled businesses. We opted to sit indoors after being eaten alive at Owen's Fishcamp and in the wine room. Small and intimate, but perfect for conversation. We did sit near the kitchen, but it wasn't too distracting. The food is the bomb here! After trying numerous places in Sarasota and being super disappointed due to unrealistic expectations, this place lived up and exceeded my expectations in the explosion of flavors in each of the dishes. The best way to describe this place is farm-to-table with a tendency towards Asian-fusion. Before our starters came out, they brought out these parmesan biscuits which reminded me of the savory black-and-white cookies from Eleven Madison Park (minus the chocolate-dipped coating). Between the four of us, we had the coconut ceviche (Thai-style curry base which almost tasted like a great gazpacho), the mushroom bisque (thick, flavorful and complex - even in the middle of summer, it was delicious) and the zuchini and greens salad (very light salad with a ton of citrusy flavor). For our entrees, our server sold a couple of us on the cobia special grilled on a bed of congee (yes, the best congee that you can find in an authentic Chinese restaurant!). I had the gulf shrimp which sat on a nori okonomyaki with crushed peanuts, cucumbers finished in fish sauce aoili - damn, this dish bursted with flavor in my mouth. The last person in our group had the fresh-caught snapper which was cooked perfectly (normally not a fan of cooked fish, but this was light, moist and flaky) with a side of roast potatoes. We then shared the basic frozen parfait (this was only okay) but the hit was the vanilla ice cream with a chocolate coating. This was so good that all of us just zoned in on it. Having been to Big Olaf's and Abel's the last couple of days, this ice cream really knocked the socks from the bunch! Service was great - unobtrusive while server was super knowledgeable and passionate about the dishes on the menu. Overall, a great dinner and would recommend to anyone wanting a nice meal. It wasn't cheap - with almost 3-courses plus wine, expect to pay $50-75pp - but well worth it!

    Delicious! Great service! Romantic and cozy setting. Food options are limited but they are fantastic choices that all look delicious. I had the burger and it was mouth-watering awesomeness. My boyfriend had the fish special and it was very very tasty. The menu changes a couple of times per year which is exciting! What an amazing find- perfect for date night! We will be back.

    Arguably the best restaurant in Sarasota. From start to finish the attention and quality that is given to the service and food is remarkable. I lived in the NYC area for 16 years and this rivals anything I experienced up there. I strongly recommend the mushroom bisque. It was so good I as for more to take home. The beignets were as delicious as they were creative. Their theme of only serving sustainably sourced produce and proteins makes these restaurant not only incredible but admirable.

    It wasn't the worst experience but it certainly wasn't memorable in a good way. Parking was weird and uncoordinated. I'm not sure they even have a parking lot. They're more than off the beaten path - they're far from everything. The menu had 7 things on it. Hand to God, I've never seen anything like it. It was awkward. I asked if there was another menu I missed and the server acted as if I insulted the chef. There was almost no service. It wasn't that it was slow or bad. It was just non-existent. Order, drop off food, and back with the check 20 mins later. Look, maybe it just isn't for me. I'm a laid back guy trying to enjoy a formal dinner and good fare without all the pretense. I actually enjoy formality but only when a place does it right. Boo on this place unless you enjoy this sort of awkward and different experience.

    To me, this is what fine dining is all about. Fresh, local ingredients. Elevated to fine art on delivery to the table. The setting is humble elegance. A re-gentrified house with rooms intact, but crafted upgrades in flooring, lighting, furniture, and fine art. Personal touches abound, from the canvasses of the chef's favorite fishes, to the photographic portrait of the owners' doggie peering intensely out at you with his intelligent, blue eyes. At the rear of the house and accessed by separate French doors, the Wine Cottage offers intimate dining plus a bar backed by carefully selected bottles. But ah, the food. Delicious and complex. We shared a vine ripe, sweet gazpacho. And leafs of smoked cobia on a pedestal of carved potato. Then wild mushroom salad, followed by the most intriguing shape shifter: brussell sprouts, chopped with carrot and romaine and held together to look like uncut sushi in a parmesan, tabasco dressing. Unable to stop there, we had a bowl of ice cream laced with tiny surprise nuggets of flour-less chocolate cake. btw, the bill was not a King's ransom as many here on Yelp seem to think. Our small plate selections along with a coffee and two glasses of Pinot Noir was a mere $58. That's a pittance for a visit with a Zagat rated, James Beard finalist in his own charming restaurant.

    We came on July 25th 2014 for a birthday dinner. We were seated in the main house, but prefer the wine house better. The main room is beautiful, but tends to get very hot with the constant door opening in the summer. As for food, it is always awesome. I went vegetarian this time and the polenta was AMAZING!!! I tasted everyone's plates and the two fish dishes were very large and flavorful. The meat was another huge portion and also very good. Also try the ice cream when you go because it is home made and really great! Also BYOB of wine for a $20 corkage fee. Or you can select one of their amazing wine selections.

    What a quaint little restaurant with great service and an exceptional menu. The chef definitely put some thought into the recipes and the kitchen and staff execute it perfectly. I've been to this cute little house to dine before it was Indigenous, but I don't remember my meal at all. This first meal I had was definitely a memorable experience. I love the feel of going into a home that's cozy and inviting. There are patio tables with lights strung on the porch for outdoor diners. Inside is a nice rustic yet modern feel. I highly recommend the parmesan beignets. They were so good. The perfect amount of pear with parmesan in each bite. The pork belly small plate with pancake and syrup was mouth watering too. You really need to have a bite of every ingredient to get the full experience. My short ribs were perfect and my fellow diners all loved their soup and seafood dinners. Treat yourself to a romantic evening or just a good meal here.

    We joined friends here for our first visit and were delighted with the entire experience. Kevin, our server, skillfully described all the menu items and specials and made certain we had our wine refilled through out our meal. Such a wonderful ambiance both dining inside and out. After dinner we ventured out back to the wine bar area which was even more enchanting. After reading the reviews on Yelp and following our dining partners recommendations, we tried the mushroom bisque and Parmesan beignets. The soup was a generous serving in a big mug and the beignets were plenty to share with the table. We had high expectations which were met and exceeded in each instance. Our table ordered the burger which has bacon jam and duck fat fried potatoes. So yummy! Also had the seafood special which was triple tail served on roasted peppers and delicious. Lastly we tried the Cobia which is now a regular item which was fantastic. Dessert was in house created ice cream with vanilla bean, mint from the garden and chocolate chips, white brownie served warm and pumpkin gooey cake. An overall Foodie dream dining experience.

    I'm pretty stingy with 5 star reviews. Every course was near perfection. The Wild Mushroom Bisque-WOW...not sure if the truffle oil is what set it apart from all the other mushroom soups I've had, but I wanted more..and the portion was quite generous. The coconut ceviche was bright, fresh and had a great palate pleasing cilantro and lemongress essence along with nice bites of fresh fish. Main course..here's where things might get tricky. I had the "Plentiful and Abundant Fish" on this particular night it was a Cobia fillet, on a jalapeno grit cake, with perfectly cubed fresh peaches and topped with a frisee garnished with extra virgin olive oil. The contrast of the heat from jalapeno, the acidity of the peach the perfectly cooked Cobia , loved it , cudo's to the Chef. I wondered what 'Hook to fork" on the menu would have been! The menu choices change based on what's fresh and available that day. I love the concept, and I wasn't dissapointed.

    Very disappointed. We had the mushroom bisque and beignets as appitezers. My wife could not stand the smell of the bisque. The beignets were tasteless empty puffs. My wife had the cobia and I had the shrimp dinners. The cobia was good but the shrimp was the worst meal I have had in Sarasota. Needless to say, we will not come back.

    The food is freshly made and tasty. My favorites are the Wild Mushroom Bisque and any of the fresh fish entrees. I go there a lot and have never been disappointed. I've had the Shaved Brussels Sprouts, the Orange Wood Smoked Cobia, Wild Caught Gulf Shrimp, Cobia on a bed of Thai curried zucchini, the hook to fork Red Snapper, and everything has been truly delicious. The fish fresh, grilled to perfection the flavors beautiful. The desserts are fun, the ice creams and sorbets are a perfect finish. I would suggest to them to offer a sorbet between courses to cleanse the palate. Inside it can get very noisy but I do not mind, it makes for a lively atmosphere. If you don't like noise sit outside. It has a lovely terrace. The service has improved enormously.

    Pleasantly surprised at this tucked away gem in Sarasota. The mushroom soup was amazing as a starter. I had the speared kobia entrée's which is a thick cut of cod also delicious The menu changes nightly and everything is FARM to table. The wine selection is also one of the best in Sarasota.     This is my favorite restaurant in Sarasota! We went there for dinner on Thursday. The restaurant is a house in a residential neighborhood. It is very pretty. The houses in the neighborhood are mostly arts and crafts houses. You start off with some homemade thyme-cheese crackers - these are delicious, and they keep bringing you more throughout the meal. For the appetizers, we ordered almost everything. The pickled peppers are fantastic! Thinly sliced, a little sweet, a little spicy, and sour. The brussels sprouts salad was sooo good also! The flavors of the shaved salad are very well balanced. It is a perfect salad. We had the pork belly lo mein which was also very good - excellent flavor, noodles cooked perfectly, and a nice big piece of pork belly. We also got the parmesan beignets, which are amaaaazing! There's 5 or 6 of them on a plate, sprinkled w/ parmesan and sitting in a puddle of syrup w/ fresh young coconut. So good! Must get! We also got the smoked cobia, which had an amazing flavor and very nice texture. Very interesting dish that you cannot get elsewhere. For the entrees, my husband got the special, which was a sauteed reck fish. He loved it. I got the cobia entree w/ julienned vegetables in a green thai curry sauce. It was AMAZING! You have to like green curry to like this dish, but if you do, it is so delicious. The fish is cooked perfectly, nice and soft on the inside, with tender white meat. It sits on a bed of julienned veggies, all in this curry broth. The flavors come together very nicely. Skipped dessert - too full. This is a an excellent restaurant w/ excellent food+service w/ great decor. Equivalent to NYC restaurants. Do yourself a favor and come eat here!!

    Since this place doesn't open until 5:30 pm, I waited (out of consideration, and at my inconvenience) until they opened to drive across town to purchase a gift certificate. When I got there the hostess explained that they don't sell gift certificates during service....that I should come back another day between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm. I called back when I got home and asked for the manager. I was told they didn't have one working that night. Talk about a snooty business approach. What arrogance this chef owner shows, the delicate genius, and his staff, can't issue a gift certificate. If I had just dropped $1500 on dinner I imagine they would have been happy to sell me a gift certificate during service.

    Thoroughly impressed with the hip, modern country decor; the knowledge of the waitstaff concerning the menu; and the freshness of every single ingredient put into these dishes. The menu was creative, well thought out, and provided an incredible mix of common and uncommon components. This was truly fine dining in a place that obviously cares about putting out a top level dish every single time. Others have described the dishes, so I'll avoid repeating their praises. Needless to say (but I'll say it), if you like food - and locally sourced farm to table dining - you must get a reservation and dine here.

    Great food, inventive and flavorful; great service; and intimate ambiance. Enjoyed every bite. We shared a Cajun style snapper with gulf shrimp and a Thai fusion Cobia fish dish. Both were exceptional and eclectic in a good way. Will certainly visit again.

    Usually I read the yelp reviews and have a good idea what to expect. This was one of those time when I felt over promised and under delivered. The food was good and a few things were great. The menu is certainly limited and expertly prepared. It's simple food done well. The two of us had the Brussels sprouts, the gazpacho and the beignets. Each had an entree the farm to table and the wild shrimp. Also a drink, no dessert. When you pay over a Benjamin for a meal, I guess I expected more from the place. The atmosphere was too dark. Couldn't take a picture without a flash hitting your dinner partner. Could not read the menu so I suggest using your flashlight from your phone. Upon arrival, the waitstaff seemed to be nervous pacing the floor. Their energy felt unsettling and I couldn't relax. The entire meal imagine sitting in a restaurant that is basically the size of someone's home with a parade of waitstaff walking through it. Maybe it was the floor design of where the kitchen is, or maybe I felt the anxieties of the inexperienced staff, I'm not sure but I was actually glad to leave this restaurant.

    Had dinner last night with wife and friend; have not been there for months but always found it very good and reliable. Well, very good had been upgraded to excellent. The experience could not have been better. Appetizers were mushroom soup (always to die for...like Crab Bisque at Bijou...in a league of their own) and Shaved Brussels Sprouts, which was also scrumptious. Main courses were Sturgeon (from Mote Marine), Swordfish and Gulf Shrimp; all were excellent, my Sturgeon kept getting better as I continued to eat it. WOW And for dessert we shared Gooey Butter Cake. No real expectations, but it became an almost religious experience. What a way to end a meal....and a lovely Cappuccino....made correctly. This was one of those memorable meals where everything was perfect. And the ambience? You can actually hear the person across the table!! Plus, they have outdoor dining.

    I wanted to go someplace special for my birthday - with a focus on quality, locally-sourced ingredients. My sweetheart made a reservation at an upscale chain steakhouse, but after seeking an opinion of a butcher at a reputable local grocer, I was advised by he and his fellow workers that Indigenous was definitely the better choice. And they were right. As a San Francisco foodie, I found the ambience, service, and everything that came out of their kitchen to be superlative and fabulous. You have to order the brussels sprouts and parm. beignets....off-the-charts wonderful! I had the short ribs for my entree - each mouthful was heaven. My partner had the burger and said it was the best he'd ever eaten (and he is very discriminating). I brought my own bottle and paid the corkage, but they had an excellent wine list, with reasonable markups. This is, without a doubt, CUISINE (vs. food) and you will not be disappointed.

    Had wanted to come to Indigenous for quite awhile and experience was mixed. The atmosphere is fabulous, very intimate, warm and cozy. Our waitress was very knowledgable and gave great service, but special descriptions were way to long and wish could have been more personable. We were seated outside right by the host stand and this took away from the experience for the hostesses were very stressed out and frantic for the size of the restaurant, even if it was at full capacity for it is a small venue. One in particular was slightly rude and in general they were stressed or came across that way. The meal itself was so so. The gruyere crackers provided were interesting but didn't par with the full meal. Appetizer, Brussels sprouts excellent, pickled peppers good but were more like a edible garnish, Special-Cobia fish-Hook to Plate, very good. Special-Garden-Vegetarian option, Lentil Curry-so so, pretty basic and boring and expensive for what it was. Lemon Olive Cake for dessert-all the garnishes lovely, ice cream, raspberry sauce and pistachio, but cake was as dry and hard as a hockey puck. Would go again and try to get a table in a different area, but it wouldn't be on the top of my list.

    Had the Wold mushroom bisque which was delicious and crazy filling. The fig and pecan salad was great. Also had the snapper, Cobia appetizer that were very good. Parmesan beignets were not my thing and the gruyere crackers were odd. Desert was the chai cheesecake and mango champagne sherbet which stole the show.

    We've been coming here for several years now... we've had a few misfires and a few excellent meals here, but the last few times have been really superb... The food just gets better and better and the specials are excellent... love the veggie specials too... :-) Service is always spot on... right now we vote Indigenous as hands down the best food and ambience in Sarasota... :-)

    Hidden gem in Sarasota! This farm to table style restaurant offers a creative and relaxing dining experience. We enjoyed sitting in the wine cottage where our server Adam provided us with superb service along with other staff. At the recommendation of a friend, we started by ordering the wild mushroom bisque which was delightfully flavorful. For dinner we both enjoyed the Hook to Fork special of tarpon - excellent! Somehow we saved room for dessert - while all if the options sounded delicious we settled on raspberry sorbet with mint and a white chocolate crust and a bubblegum sorbet. The ambiance, service and food were wonderful - we'll be back!

    This food is exceptional! Hands down on of my favorite restaurants anywhere. The menu is seasonal so, like the name suggests, it varies. The fish differs daily, too, as they only serve what was caught that morning. So everything is delightfully fresh. But the key here is the preparation. And it is phenomenal. This Chef has mastered his cuisine. It's no wonder he was a semi-finalist for the prestigious James Beard Award. Being from New York, I'm not in Sarasota often, but when I'm down here, I always stop by. The burger is a staple on the menu; make sure to treat your taste buds. The mushroom bisque is delicious also. And the fish, whatever it is they are serving, will knock your socks off.

    My husband and I made reservations for Valentine's Day and our 26th Anniversary for dinner. It was our first time eating at this restaurant. The atmosphere was very quaint and cozy. After a short time it did get a bit noisy, so I am sure that the outdoor seating would be nice. Everything we ate was delicious and cooked perfectly. We didn't try any desserts because we were too full. I would for sure go back again.

    Where to start Mushroom bisque -aroma heaven with truffle essence. Fluff spinach with a shrimp sauce- a lovely combination Parmesan beignets- WOW cobia (fish) - this fish is so hard to come by it was out of this world. Dessert - chocolate ginger mousse. If you want to make any girl happy this is IT! Service- very knowledgable and excellent at explaining the dishes. Price- true valve to the deliciousness we got to enjoy.

    For some reason it has taken me forever to try indigenous. Which is sort of crazy since I loved canvas cafe (previous restaurant at same location with same chef/owner) and I know some of the staff. But finally the stars worked out and the moon was in the right phase and we tried indigenous. I think the trick here is just order what ever is the special that day. The thing we ordered that were the specials were amazingly good, the things just off them regular menu were good but not of the same order of good. The special salad with dinosaur kale was excellent as was the pork belly appetizer. I could have just had more of those two and been very happy. The DC and guests fish dishes were excellent and interesting combinations of flavors, I could describe them but since these change every day what's the point? But my recommendation is to get what ever is the local catch special. Also tried the short ribs. They were good and tender and nicely braised but the gratin was under-seasoned for my taste and didn't really work. Service and wine was excellent. I would go back but probably an occasion place for me rather than every weekend kind of place.
