Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
Pizza
Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.
Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.
Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

When the name of this place popped up in my to-review lists I was taken aback. I hadn't gone to an Italian market recently. But, once I read reviews, I remembered. Well, "remember" might be a strong word, because I was drunk. Anyway, after a night of bar hopping in St. Pete, this place hits the spot. I liked it better than D.C.'s jumbo slice, and remember it being cheesy enough to think, that, at least for drunk food, it was pretty good. I was the table-finder, so I had no staff interaction. Bathrooms weren't the cleanest, but were not awful. Tables were sticky. It's a no-frills, sober-you-up type place. I'll be back next time I'm drunk in St. Pete.

for the price you pay you get: excellent place... great hosting...great food... wish for places like that in the bay area.

The food is a very strong 4+ stars here. I have to subtract 1+ star for the always crowded, hectic experience and obvious parking shortage in this area. I worked nearby in DTSP for over a decade. My friends and I regularly treated ourselves to lunch on Fridays. And often, we craved Italian food. As for trying to find parking nearby and actually dining in here? Forget it. Going out for a "work lunch" in DTSP can quickly become a real nightmare. This particular city block seems to be the epicenter of the "hassle earthquake?" So to combat this, we would just have someone jump out of our vehicle with the cash and pickup our food order, while we circled the block and picked them up again to eat back at our desks or at a local park. A logistical headache, yes, but the food is always worth it! The pizza here is one of the best thin NY styles in our area. Same goes for the calzones and subs. None of us ever had a bad meal here. We always loved it and crave more. But the experience? Mostly, it's sort of like a minor Disney or other crowded Theme Park. Think the Haunted Mansion or Space Mountain? Love the ride. Hate the wait! You love them. You crave them. But most often you just put off enduring the chaos, and make them only a very occasional treat, while forever hunting to find similar fun(food) elsewhere in the meantime..? I love your food. I dread the experience...

We stopped by Fortunato's for a late-night slice of pizza after cocktails on our first night in St. Petersburg. It was surprisingly delicious, even by NYC pizza standards. We even contemplated going back for dinner another night. It's a dive, so don't expect a romantic dinner, but it's yummy, cheap, and quick.
(5)Alisha E.
Their pizza is delicious. I am pregnant and have been craving buffalo chicken pizza and have tried it at several places but this one by far has the best I have ever had. I also tried the lasagna pizza and it was amazing and definitely tasted like lasagna. They have gluten-free pizza as well. They also have pasta and salad. It gets crowded and line can be out the door especially at night, and during clubbing hours. Don't be afraid. Line moves fast.

Any time I'm drunk in St Pete I would end up here and the food was good by my drunk standards. After coming here sober & I'm the day, I entirely changed my mind. In my clear state of mind I noticed how utterly mediocre the pizza tastes! Very disappointing because I love NY style pizza. After eating my lame pizza slices, I needed to pee. Both of the bathrooms are FILTHY! They smell soooooo strongly of urine that I couldn't even breathe. I immediately turned around and walked out. Overall this place really needs to step it's game up. At night, there's a line out the door. For the money they should be bringing in, you'd think they could afford a stronger cleaning product.

Was here for First Friday and got hungry. I decided to get some pizza. I've eaten here before after the club let-out but this time I went in before the night was over. I stood in a long line that moved quickly though. This place reminds me of the pizza joints in NYC that I used to go to. I let my eyes do the ordering and picked a lasagna slice and a regular cheese slice. Both went sent through to be warmed up as I continued on the line to pay. Since it was a busy late night, all the pizzas are put on trays and you kind of yell out to the cashier what you got. There were some mix-ups before me but everything was sorted out. Not bad prices ~ $3.50 for specialty slices, $2.50 for cheese ($4.00 for Sicilian, there was a nice "NYC white pizza" but I had to pass since it looked so fulling). My total was a little over $6 with tax. I had to grab my own water cup. I got some napkins, sprinkled some cheese and peppers on my slices and grabbed a seat. Now on to the taste: lasagna pizza is a regular slice but with splotches of ricotta and ground beef. While not bad, just not as good as I thought and could use more seasoning. Now my favorite slice is and will always be a plain cheese (oh how I miss $1 NY pizza). This cheese slice was good, just the taste I was looking for, not too much sauce, good amount of cheese, fold-able, not greasy. Had flavor and did not taste like cardboard. What more can you ask for? I wouldn't make a special trip here but I always seem to stop here when I pass by.
(3)Malary J.
This has always been a late night go to after I've walked all over St. Pete bar hopping. The lasagna and white pizza are my favorites slices of pizza to enjoy. Also the garlic knots are very tasty as well. Although I've never been here sober, it always hit the spot after long night out on the town
(4)Amy Z.
Great place for a late night slice.
(4)Thuy L.
Line is out the door when it's First friday, or any weekend. My favorite is the white pizza. Everything else is pretty decent considering the pizza sits there and they throw it in the oven for a few minutes. Not bad if you're drunk.
(3)Thuyen B.
Came here on a Friday night, kinda tipsy and I'm pretty sure I got a contact buzz from inside Jannus from the no-show DMX concert, so of course we stop for a slice! There was a steady line forming out the door. So here's how it works : you stand in line at the counter, order the slice(s) you want from their counter, they warm it up for you and then you pick it up as you go pay. Kinda like those pizza places at the mall. They did have a menu where you could order other things besides pizza. Pizza was good. I had a regular pepperoni slice. Real greasy so I had to mop up some of that with a napkin- personal preference. But, nice thin crust and they didn't skimp on the pepperonis. The garlic knots were probably good earlier in the night. Ours were cold and kinda hard. Service was friendly from everyone that worked there. Plenty of seats when we were there. 10/10 would come by for a slice after a night out downtown. Fast and convenient.
(4)Tahirih T.
Favorite place to go after a night of drinking on the town. Line is usually our door late night on the weekends. I like their Hawaiian and buffalo chicken pizza. I've also tried their buffalo chicken stromboli which was so good though there was more dough to cheese ratio. I still devoured it though. Garlic knots are average but still good. Service it was pretty good most nights but you can't blame the staff for having to deal with drunkards most nights!
(4)Ally S.
Lived here over 20 years. Finally gave it a try last night. It wasn't bad. Good quick lunch place for an awesome price.
(3)Sarah W.
My New York heart is happy. I had their NYC slice which was a white pizza with spinach and it was excellent. The crust was nice and thin, the white pizza was the right amount of ricotta and parm and mozz and the spinach and garlic was well prepared. I'll definitely be back!
(4)Maria S.
Yummy cheap pizza. Good place for a pit stop on an afternoon walk if you're craving a beer and pizza :)
(4)Patricia S.
I had the forunato outrageous pizza sub, it was just that. The meat and sauce was full of flavor, and the bun was fresh and toasted just right. I highly recommend it.
(4)Mark R.
Pizza here is always pretty solid, sometimes it can be a little dry or too greasy but usually it is a perfect spot to swing through after you've had a few cocktails and have a couple slices.
(4)Robert M.
Bleh. Like others I had the $5 Lasagna lunch special. Added an intalian sausage and meatball so quickly it was little over $10. It tasted ok. This place could use a good cleaning. I mean late at night bring an experienced cleaning crew in and scrub the wall, tables and floor down good...with BLEACH! My table was all yucky and that happened last time too. Another thing that is dissapointing is they have wifi but only for the bosses. I kid you not. I found like 4 signals (Fortuna, Fortuna guest 1, Fortuna guest 2). When I asked for a password I was told no and that only the bosses can use it. These idiots set up different accounts on the wifi access point for I guess 4 bosses and they won't let a customer have a little data? Are you frigging kidding me??? I had to connect to a restaurant next door. What an embarrassment for this place and I will eat elsewhere because of this!
(2)Ron G.
Hands down, the BEST NY style pizza in St Pete. I routinely drive out of my way to get a two slice lunch whenever closer, comparably-priced pizza places just won't satisfy the craving for a good slice. The premises and atmosphere aren't what I would describe as special, but they're authentically "Brooklyn-ish" in feel. The real star of this establishment is on display, first to your nose out on the front sidewalk (I'm salivating like a Pavlovian dog as I write this), then visually - and in multiple varieties - in the glass cases at the front counter as you walk in. The staff (a family?) is friendly, courteous, and will happily customize your slices with fresh ingredients. I've never been here when they weren't busy, but I believe they stay that way for good reason... Consider me their poster boy. Did I mention they have a full menu of offerings besides pizza and the fact that they deliver (to a limited area)?
(4)Marinda H.
Weekday lunch It's cheap and fast. Ordered a $5.99 baked rigatoni lunch special. Came with 2 delicious garlic knots - the knots were fresh and hot and not greasy. The rigatoni was good (decent red sauce, ricotta, pasta) but the cheese layer on top was pretty hard so I missed out on the hot gooey cheesiness that makes a baked pasta nummy. Added on a side salad which was very good - loved that I got to pick 4 items to put on the salad (a la Subway style) and the homemade italian dressing was very good. Would revisit and try something different. Coworkers got the lasagna lunch special - it looked great and they loved it.
(3)Shawn J.
Really good pizza and Greek salad. The pizza we had was probably in our top 3 pizzas in the state of Florida, seriously it was that good! All this place needs are some draft beers instead of only having bottles.
(4)Eric W.
We were wandering Central Ave. trying to figure out where to eat. This is no easy task, because the options on Central and First Ave. are numerous and varied to say the least. In the end we decided to stay light, knowing a big dinner was ahead of us. We settled on Fortunato's, primary because of the lunch specials displayed on a board out front (see photos). 2 slices and a drink for $5 seemed like a pretty good deal. The slices were great. Large and tasty they got the job done. I would definitely consider Fortunato's again for lunch. There's plenty of indoor seating and even a few tables on the sidewalk out front. Renovations are going on, so maybe there will be more seating or a bar. If you are looking for a decent slice, look no further.
(4)Lauren C.
Typical pizza joint with ready to go pies and slices . It's located smack in the middle of Central Ave. This place is always packed, but I don't think it's cause their food is that great, they just happen to be the main pizza shop in an area that gets crowded with late night partiers and others looking to grab a quick slice. It's a counter style service, so it should be fairly quick, but during late weekend nights it gets so backed up the line is out the door and normally you have to eat your pizza standing up since there's no seats. I've always just thought the pizza here was just ok, but never been too impressed with the environment. The seating options are lacking and doesn't seem all that clean. Overall, I'm not a huge fan and would probably venture farther away from the main area of downtown to find a good slice in a more relaxing place.
(2)Jesseca O.
Quick to get food and really good pizza and garlic knots totally recommend this place
(5)Johnny K.
At first I was a little pissed bc it took 30 min for two slices of cheese. But it was 6pm and busy and the people gave me an extra slice. Plus 7.50 for any beer and two slices of cheese is such a deal downtown.
(4)Seamus M.
Best NY pizza in Tampa Bay is all you need to know. I'm from the northeast and it seems impossible to find a pizza shop to walk into for a couple slices of good pizza and this is the only place I've found so far. Guys behind the counter are always friendly and they do serve beer if you enjoy a cold one with a couple of slices. Not so good: Garlic knots. I always grab a couple of slices whenever I'm in downtown St. Pete and recommend you do the same if you like good pizza.
(5)Manish B.
Best pizza joint in St Pete. Growing up in NY/NJ I've had my fair share of pizza the way pizza is supposed to taste. This is the closest thing to NY pizza I have found in Florida. The crust is nice and thin and not overcooked, just the right amount of cheese to sauce ratio, and it tastes really good. I have been coming here for several years and the pizza is pretty consistent, their cheesesteaks are pretty good too. I would come here more often but parking is a bitch here and I live just outside their delivery range so that sucks. But if I'm in the mood for really good pizza, I make the effort to come to this place.
(4)Ali C.
My daughter loves this place . . . me I think it is OK. They have lots of pies ready and you can buy by the slice. They also have a hot bar with other items and a salad area which is nice. They have good deals and the prices are good for downtown. They are open late. Nothing fancy on service. They have indoor/outdoor seating. It is simply counter service. If you need a quick bite in downtown St Pete and want pizza or have kids with you it is worth a stop. Enjoy!
(3)Day W.
Not sure why it's called "market" because it's not. Big slices of thin crust pizza. Stromboli. Calzone. Grilled chicken salad. Caesar salad. Hot&cold subs. Lasagna. Big menu. They added a bar a few months back. Good idea. Anyway good food at great prices. Not great but good to very good.
(4)Camaron A.
Was down in St Pete on a first Friday and checked out this place. Of course it was super packed I waited on line for over 20 min. Only other place I waited on line longer was L&B Spumoni Gardens in Brooklyn , unfortunately I wish I was waiting there instead of here. Ordered 2 Sicilians with included toppings as they don't sell them without them. Ok red flag #1. I go to and pay and he's like $9. What?????? Are you crazy I'm saying to myself $6 more I can a whole Sicilian that's much better. Red Flag #2 I asked for it to be just warm but of course that simple request fell on deaf ears. Not only did they crucify it , it was so hot I think the sauce evaporated. Of course I ask for another 2 slices that weren't welded to the pizza stone and they don't have any more .... Shocker. Pizza was more like concrete with rubber cheese speed bumps. Maybe if they listened when I politely asked just warm I would be able to taste what it really tastes like. But they won't get that opportunity from me and I'm sure they will survive without my patronage. A lot of ppl don't know what good pizza is supposed to taste like.
(1)Amy B.
Um I guess you have to be really drunk to love this pizza because I stopped here the other night and it was just mediocre pizza and I actually felt so sick afterwards. I'm not sure why they put the slices in the oven because they aren't hot when they come out....So not impressed, maybe next time I'm downtown drinking I'll try it again but as of right now, I'm. Not a huge fan.
(2)Ron J.
Their pizza is the bomb.......to me!!! Garlicky, buttery and new yorky. You should be here!!!
(5)Michella K.
Stopped for lunch with a picky kid who won't try anything new, so pizza it is! Quick service, a lot of food for a good price. The kid loved the giant New York style slices. The Greek salad was pretty good too!
(4)John S.
I got two slices from the counter, a pep/mush and lasagna slice. the lasagna slice had definitely been sitting out for a while and had dried out. other than that it was ok. the pep/mush has a different tasting really garlicy sauce and I love garlic but this was way overpowering. it tasted weird/bad.
(2)John N.
This is a great pizza place, loved the pizza and salad. Good atmosphere, you can eat inside or outside.
(5)Karie R.
I love the pizza and the weekday deal of two slices of cheese pizza and a soda for five bucks. It's the best pizza outside of Jersey.
(5)John R.
Okay, I'm from Brooklyn, now living here. THIS IS HOME FOOD!!!! NY pizza here in St. Pete. You pick up your slice and fold it in half, the crust cracks. Not doughy but cooked right. The oil runs off it, the herbs, you can taste in the sauce. My favorite, (I love meat) the Butcher Block!!! Next is the Lasagna slice, yes, Lasagna Pizza. Getting a soda, FREE Refills too! It's all go. Plus outdoor cafe style seating. You will tell your friends. I have!!
(5)Pyra-Danny V.
You have to show this place love because it's one of the few places offering food with counter-side service. With its lunch specials, this is one of those places where flavor and service don't matter because its CONVENIENCE for the business people of St. Petersburg will always help it come out on top. FOOD Pizza, pasta and salads. There's not much variety between each category. Tastes yummy, but nothing spectacular. Not much crispy crust for any NY pizza lovers and it doesn't really add anything to the overall effect in terms of flavor or texture. The sauce is nicely seasoned though as well as the cheese and toppings. SERVICE The workers are brisk and business-like. Just grab and go. ATMOSPHERE The small tables in the back are reminiscent of those days when McDonalds used to look like tired old buildings. At least you can do something about it... really... grab and GO OUTSIDE! Central Avenue is a great little walking area.
(2)Sarah S.
I like Fortunatos. We don't ever order anything but a couple of slices of pizza. I always get the vegetarian, and my fiancé the deluxe. Both are yummy. The wings are also decent according to my fiancé. I like that the pizza isn't scolding hot when they give it to me. It's quick. It's cheap. It's in a great location. Sometimes we walk to downtown just for a slice. Many better restaurants around, but this is our snack food and occasional late night splurge. Pizza is good, but not the best pizza of your life. Slices are decent size.
(4)Tiffany S.
We had the breakfast pizza and it was absolutely delicious!!! Our kids loved it and so did everyone in our party! We had to order another breakfast pizza because it was so yummy!
(4)Hailey L.
The pizza is delicious. It's my choice for delivery; however, it is a complete crapshoot whether they will be able to deliver or not. I'd say your odds are less than 50% that you'd be able to call on any given night and have a pizza delivered. The driver always "just went home for the night" or his car "just broke down." For that alone I would order delivery from Joey Brooklyn's.
(3)Karen T.
Located in the heart of St. Pete on the Central Ave. strip, Fortunato's is a fine little, off the sidewalk spot to grab a quick slice of tasty pizza. It's fairly clean and they make an effort to remember the locals with a, "how's it goin'" greeting. I go for one reason: they serve Gluten-Free pizza. It's good. It's not amazing, but it's good and a treat for someone that's on a gluten free diet. (This is not a gourmet pizza restaurant or a cozy, romantic get away.) Inside it's hot, booths are dusty, lumpy and in disrepair, so sit at the outside tables, greet your neighbors, pet the local pooches walking by, and enjoy a simple slice of tasty pizza while enjoying the wonderful BURG. ;)
(3)Amanda C.
Maybe it's so good because every time I eat here I'm a little on the tipsy side but I love this pizza! Last night I had the spinach and tomato pizza. When I asked if they could add bacon a girl that worked there said, "we can put bacon on anything." Umm..in love!!
(4)Melanie C.
Good place if you want a fast service. If you would like to try the Philly sub, make sure that you remind them to cook it well. The first time I tried it, the meat was uncooked (I can still remember that cold bite). The meatball sub is OK, I'm not a fan. Subway's is tastier. Stick with the $5 specials. Those seem to look like they are newly made.
(2)Courtney G.
Legit by the slice pizza.
(4)Holli D.
I don't know if it's because I had just completed the St. Pete's Women's half marathon or not, but this place was FANTASTIC!!! I ordered the $5 lasagna lunch special that came with 2 garlic knots (rolls) & it hit the spot!!! Almost licked my plate clean! The lasagna was a perfect balance of meat, cheese & noodles. The tomato sauce was just tarte enough! The portion was HUGE for $5. We sat outside. The place was clean, cute & had super friendly service! Can't go wrong with a $5 lunch special on a Sunday!
(5)Lindsay H.
Late drunken nights downtown call for a stop at Fortunato's Pizza. Fortunato's has been a traditional hangout spot among myself and my friends. However the food isn't necessarily the best I've ever experienced but it is pretty yummy. The garlic knots are to die for but the pizza can just be greasy and a little bland at times, but it's worth a try. It's also a great place to people watch if you sit outside on a warm summer night or even indoors the sights and sounds of the locals can be entertaining. There is an adjoining nightclub/bar that Fortunato's owns nextdoor that opens some evenings. Stop in for exact times but they do have live music.
(4)Paul K.
Went 1st Friday of July - perhaps First Friday is not the best time...long (and slow) times, resulted in cold (maybe even undercooked) pizza, was the apparent result. I'll give it another shot another night when its not so busy.
(2)David C.
This place never put off a very good vibe, but I tried it for the sake of completeness. Though conscious to avoid the self fulfilling prophecy, I realized that my initial judgment was accurate after they put my two ordered slices on a bread toaster conveyor belt. Yeah, a bread toaster, like at summer camp, or in college cafeterias. It's like microwaving coffee - all heat sources are not equal. The two sorry, droopy slices handed across to me on a plate were the color of a wilted orange flower. One had pepperoni and mushrooms, the other was unadorned. Of the two, the one sans toppings was preferable - the mushrooms tasted like some special kind of fungus that grows on mushrooms had gotten to them first. The slice was a perfect storm of mediocrity. Soggy crust lost its moisture by the outer edge til it crackled dry like a rained-out trampoline. Wimpy sauce lay like tweaked out midwestern girls around a vegas pool - bland and vapid. Cheese was a grease encrusted toupee, even more depressing in its absence. Note: the place is attached to the adjacent bar, separated by a curtain. Maybe after a night down town, on a mouth deadened by cigarette smoke and stale beer, this would be exactly what you needed and right away. For lunch, walk around the block and hit up Joey Brooklyn's.
(2)Michael K.
The service was quick but very rude. Pizza was cheap ($7.62 for 2 slices of pepperoni and sausage and a coke). Pizza tasted pretty good it was just the a-hole guy at the service counter complaining about how much he hates his job that lost it for me. The inside is nice though.
(2)Ottis T.
Some of the worst pizza in the area.. comparable to conveyor belt hungry howies/dominoes/pizza hut. I got my slice (which was actually put through a conveyor belt in front of me), and after asking several times for the hot pepper flakes, I bit into some of the of the most bland pie I have ever had. Cold in the middle, cheese was oily, and the sauce was almost non-existent. Avoid at all costs, try Tour De Pizza further up on 4th st and 38th
(1)Mark M.
First my pizza was cold, then burnt. Partner's Stromboli took a long time; looked like they forgot to put it in at first.
