Great food! Started off with a cheese plate (we ordered 3 different cheese for 5 people. More than enough). The truffle fries were a huge hit at the table -- the bowl was huge, shared between 5 (despite previous reviews that they weren't great -- they were perfectly crisp and flavorful). Ordered the bistro chicken (prepared gluten free - they were really accommodating about that) and it was the perfect portion and really delicious. We also got 2 bottles of wine for the table. Will be going back for sure. Waitress was really helpful and nice!

This place had been highly recommended and I thought it was OK. I took a French friend for their birthday, as it was explained to be a French bistro. Had the tuna sushimi, it was fair. But the wine choices were OK, truffle french fries were excellent and the service was good. I was just expecting a little more from the food maybe it was just the day I went. It was raining really hard outside and we were on the outside terrace which was fine.

Extremely delicious food and presentation! Awesome variety, fun bar area, and outdoor seating. I love the people there and this place is quite the gem.

There is nothing like a good juicy Hamburger. Many places claim to have good ones and fall short. This one is possibly the very best I have ever had. Fresh bread. Wonderful cheese. Bacon. And delicious meat, with just enough fat to make you cry with joy! The French fries were also wonderful. The fried Brussels were the best I have had. Our friends had duck which was also incredible. I shouldn't tell you, but Thursday night is half off burger night. You know I will be in line!

Excellent atmosphere, friendly staff and terrific food. Wine selection and specialty drinks great as well. Loved it!

The Kale was wonderful and masterfully done ! You have to try it yourself . Yeah! The vegtable treats were more than supper and the Kale was a dream. The whole meal exceeded expectations.

My wife and I dined at The Gate House on the occasion of our fifth anniversary. The chef served us personally, as they were short-staffed, but the service was excellent. Both the soup (cream of corn and crab), and my entree (rack of lamb) were fantastic, with the lamb being some of the most tender that I have had. My wife's duck was also excellent, even though it was a custom order, and had to be made without a key ingredient. Finally, the price was also very reasonable. Highly recommended!

What a very disappointing experience First and foremost I want to commend the waitstaff. Our waiter was patient, thoughtful, and highly professional As for my meal, however, it was dreadful. I chose lamb. I love lamb. I adore lamb. I eat lamb regularly. This rack of lamb (4 small medallions at $21, oh please) was served with what one can only determine to be fancy bbq sauce. Sacre bleu! Say it isn't so! I have never taken a complaint about my meal to the staff - I generally chalk up a less than stellar meal to poor choice, busy kitchen, etc. I did, however, speak up about this one. The waiter did offer to give me a different entree, which I declined - you see, I did eat the lamb (all of it) as I am descended from Depression Era parents and don't like waste. And because I did, the kitchen staff declined to do anything - least of all to show themselves and speak to me directly- hence, my low rating Come on, folks, step it up a notch if you're going to go high brow on us. The accompanying Brussels sprouts were too salty. The one thing done well, again in large part due to the effort of the waiter, was to bring my daughter a sample of the fries so she could decide if she'd eat them with the truffle salt. I was so impressed by that.

All four of us had Kale salads - 2 with chicken and 2 with salmon. The salmon was excellent! Kale salad was very good (despite being a little too heavy on the dressing for my taste). Will definitely return.

Good food and good service. Our 6 year-old also loved the grilled cheese on the kids' menu.

I am a local and have been to The Gate House several times and have not been overly impressed by any of the meals I have had. I went last night for the last time. I ordered the scallops which were highly recommended by a couple of different people and I was very disappointed. They were not seasoned one bit. I had to add salt and pepper myself just to get some flavor, because the scallops which are usually sweet and flavorful were so bland. I also feel that $43 dollars for four small scallops and two glasses of wine is a little pricey. The other thing that I experienced again in this little restaurant was tension. The waitstaff around me was frazzled while the owners ran around trying to help. Not the delicious relaxing dinner I was hoping for.

A smashing place. Food is very good. The only thing that this place lacks is atmosphere. The wait staff is friendly, knowledgeable of their menu and quick. If I lived in the area I'd make this my regular for special occasions.

Very good food and service. So far I have had the duck, lamb, burger (best in Lewes), and the pork chop, All selections were excellent. They have a very good wine selection which is updated from time to time.

Had a fantastic lunch of a tomato, avocado and mozzarella sandwich, with some sort of balsamic dressing on a tasty brioche style roll. Came with a huge order of french fries that had a twist , think I was detecting truffle oil and a coarse salt. I ate half because it was a big portion, the rest is in the fridge Also, my husband and I had dinner here over the weekend, he digs the Gate House Burger, I went for the duck. Having not eaten much duck I was not sure how to order it, so I went chefs choice and it came out beautifully in a filet sliced and crusted with the most delicious topping. Melted in my mouth. A crispy kale spicy was the vegetable. Of course, the bread and butter worth the calories. I made a mistake taking this dish home half eaten. I should have forced myself to finish the duck. It was not as spectacular the next day. Please note: The Gate House is temporarily closing for repairs sometime in January. Many restaurants do that in low season. And since this place serves fresh food they are going to be out of some things during this time. If your first choice is not available, there are plenty of other worthy alternatives.

Found this place by accident. What a gem. Delicious cocktails. Loved the fried Brussels sprouts as an appetizer. Fresh beet salad with filet was excellent. A must try place for any visitor in historic Lewes.

Great food. Wait staff knows wine. The scallops are well paired with the ranga ranga.

We had dinner on Saturday night (party of three) and feel mixed. The food was excellent: one of our party had the lamb chops (expertly cooked with a nice char), one had the chicken special (with local peaches and fresh corn) and I had the rockfish (nicely seasoned and cooked perfectly). However, the service was indifferent and very slow.

Sweet little French bistro. Excellent food! We visited with our parents and all had the scallops which were perfectly cooked carmelized on the outside, tender on the inside. The bread here is amazing, as French as it gets with a wonderfully crisp crust. A small but well thought out wine menu. I recommend the Bordeaux.

Overall, a mediocre experience at best. I had the classic french dish, chicken salad. Almost as gallic as another meal at our table, seared tuna with wasabi. It was ok but really not memorable. The server was clearly overwhelmed by her four tables. Two of our three orders were wrong. One of them took three tries to get right. Calling it a french bistro is false advertising. There is nothing french about it at all. Try the Italian place on the same street. A hundred times better.

SUMMARY: Despite its classic French animal-centric menu, our dinner was the best vegetarian/vegan friendly restaurant experience in our 20 or so meals we had in Lewes and Rehoboth during the past two weeks. They use fresh ingredients and make everything in house. ______ My wife, daughter, and I follow a plant-based diet, and had been staying in downtown Lewes for two weeks dining out for lunches and dinners. This new French inspired bistro, which wasn't here during our last visit a few months ago, looked interesting but had a typically French menu that was almost entirely beef/duck/lamb/fish. The Roasted Seasonal Vegetable Tart, along with some of the plant-based appetizers and sides, looked workable for us, so we took a table for dinner. When we sat down, the server started by informing us they were out of the Roasted Seasonal Vegetable Tart!! We chuckled and almost got up to leave, but I'm so glad we stayed. We decided to order a buffet of every plant-based appetizer and side dish on their menu, since we could just take home whatever was left. We like to do that to try many things at new restaurants, and here it proved a wonderful meal... Beet Salad - smaller portion than the other appetizers, but very fresh and tasty beets. Garlic Lemon Kale Salad - This was fabulous! Chopped fine with breadcrumbs and pumpkin seeds, with a very small amount of parmesan cheese already mixed in (which we don't normally eat, but it was such a small amount we didn't mind). Fried Brussels Sprouts - Small sized sprouts, partly shredded, and perfectly prepared. Very tasty. The only reason there were any left over to take home was the huge portion, and those were consumed the next day for lunch. Butternut Squash with Balsamic and Chili Panko Crumbs - very good and large portion. Truffle Fries - excellent. Cooked just right so they were crispy on the outside but hot and steamy on the inside. They must've figured this out after some of the other earlier reviews citing soggy fries. Swiss Chard Braised in Shiitake Butter - excellent. Even my wife who doesn't like mushrooms liked the mushrooms that came with this dish. Our omnivorous 10 year old son got the Soup of the Day (Fish chowder) which was really good and fresh, the Charcuterie Plate, and the Short Ribs with mashed pototatoes. It was all very good and left him enough for lunch the next day. The two cocktails I had were nicely done. Service was great. The owner was very responsive to questions and friendly and welcoming. The lunch menu is totally different, and actually has more vegetarian options, so we will visit again for sure.

On July 12, 2014, we visited Gate House again, this time for dinner. Based on our previous experience we went with the Gate House Burger, which we had enjoyed for lunch. It is a short rib burger, very tasty. It was served on a brioche bun with Cheddar, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and truffled french fries. My wife asked for a cheese substitution and took smoked gouda. We both greatly enjoyed the burgers. The truffled french fries were limp and greasy. a recurring problem with Gate House fries. We also had a special beer from Dogfish that was excellent. Service was cheerful and efficient. They have a very nice patio outside.

We had a pretty good first meal in Lewes here on a Saturday night. Very friendly service and tasty food. We sat on their covered patio. It was on the slow side, but not painfully so. We had small children with us, and they were very accommodating, but I wouldn't take them back. It's definitely got a more formal vibe.

Support your local businesses people!!!!! I'm a local and I work here in town. I love this place!!! The restaurant is family owned. My server Wilson was great. Even though they seemed busy he was attentive and helpful with my diet restrictions. My food is always deelish. The tomato mozzarella and avocado sandwich and the grilled eggplant are my lunchtime favorites along with those fabulous Brussels. I've also ordered the short rib burger (it's the best in town). I went today on my lunch break and they had a variety of soups to choose from. Tomato kale and mushroom, fish chowder, butternut squash and shrimp and corn chowder (so nice on this chilly Sunday afternoon). BTW no hostess on at lunch time. Seat yourself!!! I like that I'm able to choose where I want to sit :)
