Decent tasting food. Loved eating outside on the front area with nice shade trees and lots of open area. The food is expensive for what you get. $16 for a beef burrito with rice and beans. Came with chips and three salsas for free. The food is nicely made and the service was fine.

I loved the chips and three variety of salsas the bring out. We were seated outdoors on a warm evening (enjoyed it) with live music. We started with the 1 liter margarita special (amazing). We both went with the shrimp dinners with different preparation. They were very delicious. Our waiter was very busy but made sure to check on us. We will back.

My new husband and I can't thank the Blue Agave Club staff enough for helping make our wedding day fun and memorable! Special thanks to Julio for working with our vision and creating a wedding reception space that was beautiful! We can't stop looking at pictures to relive the day. We've always enjoyed the delicious food and margaritas. Guests enjoyed the guacamole, salsa and chips, and chicken flautas at cocktail hour. At the reception, we served Carne Campestre, Trinity Enchiladas and Camarones. The buffet and tables were set up so nicely and we couldn't have asked for a better venue! The setting was intimate and comfortable. All our guests felt at home and had a blast! One friend said she has gone to at least 50 weddings in her lifetime and this one was the best! I guess it helped to have free-flowing margaritas! Everyone was complimenting on how attentive the staff was to all our needs. We especially appreciate the staff for looking into every detail, working with our vendors, replying promptly to our questions/requests and allowing us to come in early to decorate. We appreciate the take down of our 1001 paper cranes and organizing decor for pick-up, too. Overall, we can't thank Julio and the rest of the Blue Agave Club staff for making our wedding day PERFECT!

I just visited yesterday. I am a Mexican food lover and I consider myself knowledgeable in this aspect (I am not not basing my reviews only on experiences like tacos and burritos in California as I have lived in Mexico as well:-). We had: Plato Huitzilopochtli, Mole enchilada, Flank Steak, Guacamole, Chicken tostadas, Cochinita Pibil (Marinated Yucatan style pork), Enjococado and wine/margaritas. The good: Nice and ample outdoor seating area by the Main Street Nice decor, big selection of tequilas The average: food was just average. Even though it does offer entrees like Chicken en Mole, Enjococado - probably the best thing to try here, Cochinita Pibil (Yucatan style pulled pork) or Flank Steak the flavor is just very ordinary, not well spiced, not interesting, even the presentation isn't appetizing. I had WAY better Cochinita in humble taqueria in two places in Bay Area (Cafe Capistrano in Half Moon Bay comes to mind). The bad: Prices are ludicrous - for this place being in Pleasanton for one and for the quality of the food. Korbel's bubbly $12!! Seriously? A small bowl of Guacamole $12!!! Entrees 26+ !!! I should probably have given 3 stars but because of the prices being so outrageous I only give 2.

Food not bad...but very pricey. Service was just average. Patio has a nice ambience....but won't go back. Giving it a 2 because I purchased a liter of margs for $44.00....hardly had any tequila. If I'm going to pay $44.00 for margs I would expect them to be a bit more potent and flavorful. Also, unsure why I was charged for an "employee health care fee." I will call the manager and inquire.

Fun outdoor atmosphere, with great Mexican food. We like to the authentic pork dish and the tortilla soup best. But it's all very good. friendly service in a great location. My wife and I ate the often. Great causal place on a Friday or Saturday night especially.

Best thing is the Main Street downtown area. Food is mediocre at best. $12-20 for the 'lunch' menu. Portions are small. The Taco combination plate was around the same size as a Taco Bell crunchy taco along with a slim layer of beans that tasted a bit like baby food. The rice was ok and the portion was a bit more but definitely not adequate. The worst parts is the $60 bill for lunch with mediocre food and I drank water. The 3% employee healthcare surcharge was a shock as was the $2.50 for a bit of sour cream to try and help the food taste a bit better. Take a look at the receipt and you have been warned. Save your money or at least get better food just about anywhere in that are! Looking back I see that you guys ripped me off!! There were only 2 of us and we have 3 entrees on the receipt!!! Sorry you go to 1 star!!

I have no idea why this place only has three stars. I challenge you to tell me a better place for Mexican food in Pleasanton. It might be a little fancy but it's really good. And extremely fresh. The atmosphere is exceptional especially if you can sit outside. The staff is extremely friendly and always gets my to go order correct. My favorite is the surfing turf burrito. My son loves the grilled chicken plate. It seems basic but he adores it.

So hubby and I say, 'don't bother' on Blue Agave Club. Went for dinner on 5/9/15 after making reservations through Open Table. They didn't allow inside seating due to a brunch there tomorrow per hostess; we were never contacted that would be the case and it was very cold out. Then they didn't allow space heaters on the patio due to putting them away for same reason per hostess. Then we didn't see waiter (older guy) to put in an order for 15 minutes or more and he took forever to deliver drinks. Then, food came within three minutes of placing order. Why was this a bad thing? Well, we were told when we asked that the sauces are already prepared and obviously so was the very dense, dry flavorless chicken served in both our meals. Sauce was meh. Husband had the chicken mole and I had the one touted as their famous dish. Good thing there was a lot of sauce since my chicken was so dry. Waiter finally got a personality at tip time (of course). Earlier I almost checked for his pulse as he never gave his name and barely asked our orders. He never checked on us at all. He never refilled my husband's drink or water. Ditto for asking me about mine. This was not a cheap meal either; so I did expect WAY better food and service. I was really bummed as I wanted a special night out since we are from a few hours away on vacation for the first time together in quite a while. The only thing going for this place was its location & party light atmosphere: hence the two stars. Best thing there for me was my sweet hubby's company, my roses and the fact that I was smart enough to go grab my blankets out of the car!

I would love an explanation why there is a 3% health care fee on my check? Is it a political statement? Is the required by the city? I'll revise my review once I find out because I thought this very tacky. Lots of reviews mention this but the owner never seems to reply...gotta wonder why they do this. Perhaps they should tell you in advance? I left a 6% smaller tip. 3% for their health care 3% for mine. Still waiting for an answer... Got an answer and its ridiculous. He wants you to know that he doesn't want to pay health care for his employees so he is passing the cost on to you. This is done in the name of transparency. Stupid. I don't see workers comp, social security, etc...itemized on the bill. If you want to be transparent how much was the shrimp in my burrito? How about the cheese? Ridiculous. Gotta wonder why a business would want to be having this conversation. Classic example of a business not staying in its lane. You are a restaurant. Make good food. Not political statements. I won't be back now that I know what a horrible employer this person is...

Had a great dining experience here, to start with the outdoor patio great music but when we got our bill they added a 3% Health Care Fee. I don't blame the business owner who wants to pay additional $2.00 for a guacamole and chips.

We came here for an outdoor rehearsal dinner. Any place that can make a delicious meal and accommodate to the vegetarian groom and gluten-free, nut-allergic bride deserves two thumbs up. The chips and salsa are great. The salsa has a nice kick to it. My favorite dish of the night was the cheese and black bean enchiladas. They also made a wonderful orange tres leches. To top it all off, they really accommodated the large party and allowed us to have a beautiful intimate night before the wedding.

Delicious! Such good food, marvelous venue, and great service. We both ordered two margaritas and the Enchiladas Del Mar, which were filled with crab and bay shrimp with a side of rice and beans. Their rice has potato in it which I was a total fan of, and the sauce that was on the enchiladas was bueno! We also had some tasty margaritas, the best one was definitely the Jalepeno margarita, not really spicy unless you get a full pepper in your mouth but definitely intriguing to the palette. They also have a vast range of tequilas, so if you're looking for something rare and particular they probably have it. The one downer was that the place closes pretty early, 9:00pm, so you can't really sit and drink that much after dinner. All in all I would definitely go there again to try some other delicious concoction, whether it be a feisty margarita or another plate. Also, the venue is pretty intimate (outside where we sat at least) and they have heat lamps for the cold-blooded. Make a reservation to secure seating!

Had a great dining experience here, to start with the outdoor patio in front of this victorian beauty is very unique. I had the molÃ© enchilada plate and it was delicious. The rice was perfect and great refried black beans too, I will definitely be coming back whenever I find myself in Pleasanton!

On Saturday, 7/26/14, my girlfriend and I ate at Blue Agave Club for dinner. The last time I ate at Blue Agave Club was back in 2009. I've been to this restaurant a couple of times and always thought the food was just okay. I've never been to the restaurant at night or sat outside. We were lucky to be seated outside. Atmosphere/Decor: Blue Agave Club has a really nice outdoor dining area. There were plenty of tables to sit at. It's a nice sized outdoor dining area. It's a beautiful scenic view when you dine outside. It's very well lit up. They had live Mariachi singers which was pretty cool. I saw some metal figures that resembled Mariachi singers in the plant area next to our table. The metal figures were unique looking. I enjoyed sitting outside on a nice summer night. The atmosphere was beautiful. Food: I ordered the Pork Yucateco (marinated pork in achiote paste, Mexican rice & refried pinto beans with corn tortillas.) This dish was delicious! I loved it! The chunks of pork were very tender and so flavorful. I liked the achiote paste a lot. It complimented the pork very well. The rice and beans were really goo too. They definitely use a lot of garlic in their rice. I ordered a side of sour cream to put on the tacos I made with the corn tortillas. Absolutely delicious!!! My girlfriend liked their chips and salsa. They give you 3 different salsas. She said one of the salsas was very spicy but tasted really good. She started out with the Sopa de Tortilla Award Winning Tortilla Soup (morsels of grilled chicken simmered in a spicy tomato broth,garnished with crispy corn tortillas, cheese, sour cream, chile flakes, diced onions & cilantro.) My girlfriend thought her tortilla soup was delicious! She liked the crispy corn tortillas and tender chicken. She said everything in the soup tasted great and really fresh. I tried a few bites of her soup and I definitely agree with her. The soup was really good. My girlfriend ordered the Plato Huitzilopoxtli (a combination of Mexican favorites including: grilled skirt steak, mole enchilada, fresh roasted chile relleno, garnished with guacamole served with rice & fried black beans.) She liked her dish a lot. She thought the mole enchilada sauce tasted very traditional. I tried a few bites of her dish and I liked everything. The skirt steak was tender and tasted really good. The mole chicken enchilada had a distinctive flavor, nothing like I've tasted before. This was the first time I tried mole and I thought it was pretty good. The chile relleno was pretty good as well. You can't go wrong with 3 tasty Mexican food items. Service: The service was pretty slow throughout the duration of our dinner. My girlfriend and I knew what we wanted to order within just a few minutes after being seated. It took a while for our waiter to come over to our table. I understand that the restaurant was packed and the servers were busy waiting on multiple tables but there were times it took a long time for a simple thing such as my water being refilled or topped off. Overall: The food was excellent, definitely a 5 out of 5! My girlfriend and i were very pleased with our meals. The flavors of the food were very unique. The Blue Agave Club is a high quality Mexican Restaurant. Everyone should sit outside so you can enjoy the nice atmosphere. I had a great dinner with my girlfriend. I highly recommend dining at Blue Agave for their lovely outdoor atmosphere and delicious Mexican food!

The Blue Agave Club has such a wonderfully authentic ambience! But, then again, that feeling could have been influenced by the intensely flavorable and potent Dr. J's Margarita, a sweet-sour libation made with Reposado and Grand Marnier, a drink they invented! I arrived at 530pm, it was dusk and raining, and the restaurant had just opened. I could see from the street, the inviting glossy blue agave patio tiles pointing me in the direction of the front door of a beautifully renovated victorian. Two smiling women warmly welcomed me, and one of them led me through a twisty hallway which passed a wooden staircase and opened up into a small bar area. There was a plasma screen on one wall, and another wall, shelves and shelves of various shaped sparkling bottles of amber tequilas, the color varying from a light amber color to the aged, dark, rich amber color, a shot of which could set you back 90 dollars! After the bar, we then turned right, and entered into a boothed and single tabled, cozy room with a lovely dark blue ceiling, accented with a black multi-spiked star, twinking with tiny pin lights. I was escorted to a booth seat, very comfortable, right next to a window overlooking the spacious porch area. As I had mentioned earlier, it was dusk and raining outside, and just after I had ordered, I heard the music of a beautiful, soulful flamenco guitar, pleading in rich heartfelt songs and matching the stormy weather outside. The musician's name, I found out, was Charles, who has been playing his amazing guitar there, for over 14 years...the Blue Agave Club has been in the same, quaint, downtown Pleasanton location, for over 17 years. Award winning margaritas looked back at me from a comprehensive menu of over 35 different concoctions, and I ordered the popular Dr. J's margarita, with a grand marnier float...delicious, smooth and citrusy. As an complimentary appetizer, a bowl of crunchy tortilla chips were served with three kinds of salsa, a spicy, chunky salsa, a creamy, richer salsa with substantial heat, and a smoky, smooth salsa; each one a taste adventure in itself! I wanted something light and yet warm, due to the weather, so I ordered the tortilla soup. It was perfect, with small chunks of succulent chicken, shredded cheese and crumbled tortilla chips, and a dollup of sour cream atop a rich, smoky, tomato base soup. I found out from my friendly, enthusiastic waiter, Jesus, that the Blue Agave Club was the theme of a 20/20 special in 2014. I did not see it, but I think I can Hulu it. Take a look in the bar area at the collection of 90 tequilas...very interesting! Jesus said that two times a year, the Blue Agave hosts dinners where they highlight three types of tequilas, from the young 3-4 week old silver tequila to the 3 year old, or ultra anejo (aged) tequila, rich and smooth in its complexity. As I prepared to leave, the guitar sang to me songs without words, putting me in the mood to mull over happy and sad memories of years gone by, and I look forward to returning to the Blue Agave Club again soon, this time, with friends.

This is my favorite place to spend a Friday evening or Saturday afternoon. I attended a Herradura tequila tasting here that included a food pairing and it was splendid. I could not have asked for better service or a better experience. I definitely recommend Blue Agave for events like these and for sunning on their patio enjoying margaritas!

I had the '100 year old recipe' chicken in enchiladas (corn tortillas) as opposed to the burrito (flour tortillas) and I thought they were great. The sauce was good stuff. Also had a pitcher of margaritas which was delicious. Salsa and chips were so good that I brought some home. The waiter was so thoughtful as to pack up some salsa. Brought some spicy (three types of salsa on table) home and ate it. Nothing but smiles throwing the chips and salsa down, but it was spicy enough to cause some discomfort coming out. I'll probably consume the same amount next time anyways because it was yummy to the tummy. Just a little spicy for my 'Murican belly. But I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

Almost didn't come here because of the 3 star rating. But we landed here, back in the fun small eat up bar and had great food, great margaritas and great service. It surprised and delighted us. They have over 300 types of tequila and absolutely perfect home made citrus mixer for their margaritas. We had the chili verde burrito ! Very good! If they could fix up that Mexican Cesar we would have given them 5 stars.

Surprisingly good! Easy access for outside dining. Nice seating area. Had the combo beef enchilada and fish taco to share. Soo good! I had the fish taco and it was delicious! Had to have dessert. Tres Leches was good. Not Mission SF good, but for east bay not bad. Not sure of $8.50 for cheese quesadilla though for the kids. Too much. If you have kids, might consider ordering from the appetizers instead or they share.

A perfect place to have dinner in the summer. Large front patio area with string lights above. The food is pricey but good. We had the primavera salad (light dressing) and the enchiladas which were both excellent. Also, they have a creamy dip with green chiles you can order as an appetizer. The ambiance can't be beat and if you are into people watching-this is the place.

Love the out door seating. Perfect weather the evening my friend and I went. She introduced me to blue agave club. Mojitos the waiter recommended were good, live music, food was good. Large portions. I guess we were super hungry or it was just that good, we ate everything on our plates. (I usually ask for a box) like fancy mexican food. Lol sauces were different but oh so good. Waiters were great, friendly, attentive and brought our food in a timely manner. I will be back and do recommend trying them out.

Worst lunch experience ever. Partly our fault though. We bought a "deal of the day". $50 of food for $25. We presented our certificate and ordered about $70 of food and drinks for lunch. After the food comes, the waiter tells us our certificate expired yesterday. He talked to the manager, but he said he couldn't do anything. REALLY? Not even a free drink or appetizer or gift card to come back? Not even a visit from the manager. I thought the whole purpose of marketing through a coupon is to promote business not instigate a bad yelp review! I know it was our fault for mixing up the date, but a little sympathy would have been nice. We just spent $100 for lunch for Mexican food! And to rub salt in the wound, when we asked if they had salsa that was not too spicy for the kids, the waiter brings a little dish of guacamole and charges us $4.50. The "ensalada verde" was just soggy salad with some queso sprinkled on it and the iced tea taste like iced water. After leaving a note on the receipt somebody higher up called to apologize and we were given a $10 gift certificate. My hubby went back and got a tequila. He reported the tequila selection is great but we still won't be going back.

The patio is gorgeous and the food was a bit above average. My issue with this place comes from the service. Our server barely came to our table and when he did he seemed rushed to get away. We noticed a family sitting the table over from us and he spent the whole time talking to them so we assumed they are regulars. I get it, im sure they tip him great, but ignoring your other tables wasn't okay. It was my boyfriend and my one date night for the month and it felt like a waste of money. Definitely wont be going back.

Just got back, as always a wonderful experience, food is exceptional, we've been going since they opened, 97 I believe, and other than a short period when our favorite waiter left, he has since returned, the service has been and continues to be excellent. This is a note to all of you who seem confused or even angered by the 3%, the owner is doing you a favor, by making the 3% a line item instead of including it in the price the 3% is not taxed, remeber obc is a tax and you can't tax a tax, perhaps you would rather be taxed again, instead of taking the typical limousine liberal approach and complaining why not appreciate the owner is actually saving you a little money. btw, this is and has been standard practice in most nice SF restaurants for much longer than Blue Agave has been doing it. Our evening, Tortilla soup, tostada classica, Le lorenas margaritas, calamari, and a surf and turf burrito for our out of town guest, finished off with a flan and bananas foster, not a complaint to be heard.

So we decided to take my mother to a nice birthday dinner. I haven't been to Blue Agave Club in years, but I remember their food used to be really good. Service waz on point. I started off with a virgin Maragarita, it was ok, I have had much better ones in the past. For dinner I ordered the Enchillada del Mar. Two enchilladas, one with crab meat and the other with bay shrimp. When I tried to cut the enchillada, it was tough and hard to cut through. I first started with the one stuffed with crab meat. It was super duper dry, and at one point I bit into a crab shell, so I left that one alone because I just couldn't swallow it. The one with bay shrimp, was drenched in sauce inside. It probably would have made the one with crab taste much better if it was made the same. But at the same time the bay shrimp had way too much sauce. For dessert, my husband and I decided to share a flan. It was ok. I really disliked the burnt part on the top, which reminded me of a Creme Brule. Also the flan had a different taste to it, it reminded me of pumpkin spice, which I did not like. And the flan sauce, bu itself would have been enough, but I think they also drizzled honey, and I didn't like that either. I remember the food used to taste so much better years ago. Not sure if I will be back or not. Oh and I must not forget to mention, the gentleman who brought out our dishes (not the waitress) was acting really strange. He at one point scared us, because he came to our table with a really loud voice, texhnically yelling the dish he was about to place on the table. I assumed that maybe he was drunk. But yea, I wouldn't expect that type of service in such a fancy looking restaurant.

Food was tasty, but pricey. Bar service was awful before dinner. Patio dining had nice ambience, but was loud. Biggest bummer was the 3% surtax added to the bill to cover the "health care cost" for employees. Really? Your health care cost isn't a fixed number so that you could not figure out how to bill your products to meet this anticipated business expense? Your health care cost varies according to whether I buy an expensive bottle of wine with dinner or instead go with ice water? Seems like a cheap way to increase revenues, while pissing off customers who may unfortunately end up taking it out on the wait staff by leaving a smaller tip than they otherwise would have left. Nice place, good but expensive food. Not likely to return.

The Good and the Bad. The Good: My Negra Modelo beer was delicious. My rice and beans on the Chicken Mole plate were fine. The Bad: My chicken breast in mole sauce was dry and needed a lot of mole (and even that couldn't save it. The cost of my entrÃ©e was $19.95. It wasn't worth $9.95. My friend had the '100 yr old receipe'--it wasn't good either! His wife ordered a glass of sauvignon blanc -- when she reordered they were out and they did not have her second choice a pinot grigio. The day before I had two 'monster tacos' at Jack-in-the-box. Seriously, they made a better meal.

I've been here twice. Both times the wait staff were inattentive and difficult to find. The food was brought to us when it was still barely warm. I had a chicken dish the first time, it was pretty good. The second time, I had the enchiladas primavera. I've had better enchiladas in a frozen lean cuisine, I'm serious! Really a bland creamy disappointment. I have a tendency to ramble, so I'll make some key points. . food is just mediocre, fairly pricey . Drinks are great, I recommend the jalapeÃ±o margarita if you like spicy. . Outdoor seating is lovely, gives you the feeling that you're on vacation. (It's too bad that our server also appeared to be on vacation). . Best Flan I've ever had in my life! It was very exotic with hints of cinnamon, and chocolate, and a lot of honey. it was delectable. . They may need to hire more wait staff because last night was strike two. I shall give specifics. Our server didn't even say his name or crack a faint smile until it was time for the tip. Never checked on drinks or offered refills. I asked the guy refilling our chips and he said "I not your server" For me, service is 75% why I return to a place. I see the staff often running around and yelling a lot, I'm not sure if our server had a pulse or not. I will probably return for drinks at some point. Oh, and flan for sure!

A little oasis in the heat of the east bay. This little cottage-cum-cantina is actually carved out of an old home and located smack on the scenic old Pleasanton main drag. The garden out from is shaded by eucalyptus and lime trees by day and lit up with strings of lights at night. Blink once and you might think you're in Juarez rather than northern California. Unfortunately, we had dinner a couple blocks down at another Mexican cantina, but the menu looked tasty, with traditional favorites such as enchiladas, chicken mole and what looked like a great list of salads. What I can comment on is the house "special" margarita--just the right mix of tequila, tang and sweet. It was a great after dinner drink to relax in the garden and watch the world go by. Highly recommended if you happen to find yourself in this picturesque east bay town.

You are setting yourself up for a colossal disappointment if you are expecting taqueria food and prices. If you come here to have Mexican food with a splash of pretension, sit on a beautiful (heated) patio, and spend a little cash then you might really enjoy your visit to Blue Agave. Everyone begins their Blue Agave journey with chips accompanied by three different types of salsa.... I like to say Enjococado so I have had this dish twice. It comes in a sour cream sauce (hint of sweetness) with tortillas, beans, and rice on the side. At my last visit, the chicken was a tad bit dry but the sour cream sauce made up for that...kinda. I wonder what Abuelita Agave would say to those who served up her 100 year old recipe with dry chicken...tisk tisk. My husband got the only burrito on the menu and it was very good. It was a huge burrito with pork and also had a slightly sweet flavor (in a good way). Probably what I would order if we go back. The major draw for this place is the location and patio. That almost (not really) makes the prices worth it.

I have to give this place five stars for their beautiful patio (maybe the piano guy was a little eh, and the lady who sells roses is a little frowny, but that's okay) and their really wonderful Mole sauce. I love mole so much and it's not always the easiest to find. Then, when you have each mole being a little different from everyone else, it's always great to find one you love. They have really nice margaritas and an even greater selection of super tequila. I could probably skip the rice and beans, but just give me the chicken with mole along with some warm tortillas and I'm set. Oh, and their bananas foster is worth how horrible you'll feel after you've eaten the whole bowl. Really really good.

Blue Agave Club is a lovely Restaurant that serves a more upscale, gourmet Mexico City type Mexican Food. I give it three stars ONLY because I was not in the mood for Upscale Gourmet Mexican Food--I was hankering for basic crispy tacos and enchiladas which they do not serve. The Restaurant has a beautiful terrace for Cocktails and Appetizers and Dinner is served inside and out. It was a beautiful balmy evening so we chose outside, having arrived promptly at 5:30 when they open. By 5:45 the entire outside patio was almost filled to capacity reinforcing the fact that Blue Agave Club has a substantial following. The Hostess was delightful, the Waiters were charming and very understanding when we stated we were not interested in the Gourmet fare. When I started writing this review I actually gave it only two stars but changed it to three since they are deserving of a higher rating. I will return to Blue Agave Club when I'm in the mood to sample some of the items on the menu that seemed interesting but just not what i was looking for after a long hot day at the County Fair.

I love the large out door patio it is great for nice days/nights. What was not good was the service it took 15 min after being seated to get our water and order drinks. The. Another 30 to order food. In that time we folded the menus and stuck them off the edge of the table (hopping they would get the hint). I got the tortilla soup, it was so good I would get that again. I also got the Cesar salad, nerve again I will never order this again.

Extremely Overpriced Sub Mediocre Food. This is one case where the consensus appraisal is right on. The best part about the restaurant is the outdoor seating. Otherwise given the tastelessness of the food the prices are ridiculous. Not to mention the extra 3% health care fee which just adds insult to injury. Advice to the owner: #1. Hire a real chef who is experienced in preparing good Mexican food. Hint - take some of your outsized profits from your unjustified high prices and use them to pay for such a chef. You may earn less per customer but the increased volume resulting from serving good food will pay off in even greater profits. Continue to be cheap and you'll just find more and more negative reviews and dwindling profits. #2. If you want to give your employees healthcare, great. Just factor it in to the cost of the food instead of surprising your guests with it when the check is delivered. What you're doing is immoral if not borderline illegal. We will not be returning.

Great food, great atmosphere!! Out door seating is all that is offered on nice nights. The tables are turned over extremely quick. We were seated and with in a minute we had chips and salsa on our table (be careful the smooth one is hot). The server was at our table side shortly there after and was taking our drink orders (the special margarita is great). We got the house chicken dish which came out in less than ten minutes and it was piping hot! The server was great checking in and making sure our food was good and chatted with us though out. I would definitely go back!

4 stars for a wonderful location. The exterior looks like a small blue and white house with a bunch of tables with umbrellas in the front. The weather was nice out, so it was a cute, relaxing environment to be at during our lunchtime meal. I didn't get to see the inside but oh wells. I saw a bunch of tequilas decorate on the wall in a glassed shelf upon walking up the steps, but didn't get the chance to go in. The menu is pretty expansive but the prices are steep for Mexican food. Expect to pay $11-20 for a meal. The complimentary chips and 3 hot sauces were very good! The chips tasted homemade and were thicker, tasty, and not too salty. The 3 hot sauces are not spicy, but very flavorful. Without these I wouldn't be full with my meal. 3 stars for the food. My coworkers were disappointed in their fish tacos, they didn't like the fish very much, they thought it was tasteless and dry. I had my enchilada carnitas combo meal and I actually enjoyed it. The beans and rice were very good, and I normally don't like black beans. The beans and rice were thinly layered on top of melted cheese, it was very heavenly taking a bite into it. The meat in the enchilada was dry and tasteless, wish they had hot sauce. The enchilada was disappointingly TINY. I wasn't full after eating my enchilada, so I had to munch on the chips. I would actually come back here and try the other stuff on the menu if I'm ever in DT Pleasanton. I recommend sitting outside on a nice day. 2 stars for service. The service was eh, the waiters and servers weren't friendly. They seem stern, not happy to serve you, and sort of mean looking. Lighten up and don't kill my vibe, sheesh, its a nice day.

You go to this place for the great patio, chilled margis and delicious salsa. The food and is not too impressive, with prices that would make you think otherwise. Food Report: Chips and Salsa: A++(They have 3 different flavors of salsa and they are phenomenal) Lunch Tostada Meal: C(Had wayyyy too many veggies- squash, zucchini etc.) rice and beans were okay. Enchilada Plate: C (The meal tasted rather bland, and had no traditional flavors) Strawberry Margi on the rocks: A During a lunchtime rush, our server was great. Making sure to check on us everytime we looked in his direction and had suggestions right off the top of his head. Its located right in the heart of Downtown Pleasanton which is great to walk all the food off after your meal.

Exceptional. Perfect location in the middle of the town we were there for a car show. I had the 100 year old family recipe that was to die for !! don't think I've ever had Mexican food prepared quite like this. My husband has a hanger steak cooked in a chili sauce over rice amazing. Now if only they could move this place to Sonoma or Marin county they'd really be cooking. The wait staff was excellent, can't say enough for a Friday night (wow) I really enjoyed eating here the food was delicious.

What has happened? BAC has always been great. Tonight was an unmitigated disaster. Terrible service, so so food. Started out well, friendly greeting, reservation honored. We decided to start with margaritas and appitizer. Our waiter wanted our entree order, so we gave it, but requested that they delay their service so we could enjoy the drinks and nibbles. Guess what got served simultanousy? Waiter promised an adjustment to the bill which never materialized. On top of that beginning, one entree, Enchilada La Mer featured stale, smelly shrimp - nauseous in a bland, floury sauce - YUK! Waiter disappeared, maybe out of embarrassment. We only saw him again when he presented the bill. Only after we bugged him did he return the change So BAC, you've seen the last of us

Excellent atmosphere, flavors and location! We have been here maybe 10 times and love to bring friends here. A guaranteed fun time! It is always such a wonderful way to spend an evening - on a nice night sit outside on the patio, drink a margarita, dine and listen to Spanish guitar. Afterwards talk a walk in the historic downtown. The 1000 year old recipe chicken and trinity enchiladas are two of my favorites! We even held our rehearsal dinner here and it was perfect. HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT I wish I had looked at the Yelp rating before we went. Prices are comparable to a high end restaurant. I ordered the two cheese enchiladas and added chicken $24 total. Im thinking this should be great, far from it. The enchiladas were made up of a thin corn tortilla wrapping almost a 1/2 of white cheese. The cheese wasn't even melted. I didn't finish one (and I was starving). My girlfriend, ordered their signature dish of jumbo shrimp covered in some special sauce (apparently not so special because it covered my enchiladas too). I had half of one, it tasted fishy and old. I asked her how she liked and she replied, "Eh, ok..not worth $26." You know you didn't enjoy dinner when the best thing on both plates was the spanish rice. We both had a margaretta that would be rated average at best. The worst part, the $80 tab for a meal we couldn't forget about sooner.

I'm stunned that this place receives 3 stars, because the food is as good as it gets... possibly the best Mexican fare I've had. It's more of a cuisine than a typical Mexican taqueria type food that I'm used to seeing. We usually like to sit in the outside patio area... listen to live music, the ambience is just beautiful. I would say a must-have is their tortilla soup. Perfectly spicy, full of flavor and texture. If you're here for the first time, you must try this. I've had this on several occasions as my entree. The portion is perfectly filling, and you'll savor every slurp of it.

SO disappointed! Haven't been here in a few years, and unfortunately I will NEVER go back. 4 drinks, guacamole, and 2 entrees ran us $110, less tax. On top of that there was a 3% surcharge for "employee health benefit tax"...not my job it's the employer's job. END OF STORY. Food was okay, absolutely nothing special and felt completely bamboozled by this place...never ever ever again. Save yourself some money and hit Alberto's.

I came here today for lunch. Its pretty inside. Clean! Well decorated. Staff is very nice. But being "nice" doesn't give your menu flavor. Its okay for an Americanized Mexican restaurant. Its not authentic AT ALL so don't expect it to be. Over all its ok. Nothing special. I actually think their complementary chips and salsa are the best things on the menu. If you want something cheaper and a bit more authentic then I suggest trying Pollo Loco. Just a note.....If you want authentic Mexican food do not go to a fancy looking Mexican restaurant like this one. They're normally owned by white people who don't know anything about good Mexican food. If you want something good and authentic then always aim for the small and not-so-fancy hidden Mexican restaurant that is normally family owned. PS: Any "Mexican" restaurant that adds sour cream to your order isn't authentic. It's weird. Sincerely, Mexican Girl :)

My family tried Blue Agave last night for dinner. We sat outside on the patio and I was feeling rather optimistic because the weather was perfect and the dishes being delivered to the other tables looked delicious. West Coast Nationals was in town and we got to watch and hear many hotrods cruising up and down Pleasanton's main drag. Cool! Sadly that was the highlight of the night. I give BAC 5 stars for ambience, 4 stars for the margarita I had (good but it was $13!!) and 2 stars for the food. I got the trinity enchiladas with grilled chicken and I swear it was about as good as a microwaved TV dinner, maybe less because it was barely warm. My husband ordered the 100 year old chicken recipe which reminded me a lot of chicken tikka masala without the flavor. Most of the service was okay except they never brought my son any water (he needed a kids cup). I asked 4 different people during the course of our meal for some water and it never came. I finally gave up and gave him my own glass which he thankfully didn't spill or break. Overall I was very disappointed, definitely not worth the roughly $100 we shelled out for the 3 of us.

First off I just want to say - This place is ridiculously expensive for Mexican food, and it's not even that good. I feel like I could go to a local taqueria and get the same food for a fraction of the price. Apparently they are well known for their margaritas, which I feel like were also very pricey (~$12). They were alright - the hibiscus one is nice. We sat outside, and it was a pretty warm day and the umbrellas they had set up didn't really provide shade for the entire table. My friend ordered a chicken enchilada, which she did not like at all. I ordered the enjococado (a special on their menu), and if you have ever had Indian food it is basically the equivalent of butter chicken. The food was warm for maybe 5 minutes, before it got really cold. The service is also pretty slow. The outdoor seating area is nice and they had some live music playing, but that's really all I liked about this place. I don't think I can see myself coming back here again.

KINDA DISAPPOINTING.......Looked like a good place to eat lunch (approx 1:30 P M). We were seated by a "Friendly Employee"........Then along came "LURCH" (Addam's Family). I mean at least Lurch on the Addams Family was friendly and loyal, cracking a smile once in awhile. It was like we were inconveniencing him. He took our order, came back with our drinks, 5 minutes later. Our food was brought out by a different person, it looked really good, presented well on the plate. I had ordered the Chile Relleno Plate. It was good but not what I expected for a traditional Chile Relleno. There was no batter on the Poblano Pepper, just cheese inside covered with red sauce. I like the batter on my Chile Relleno. This style was a first for me, good but not what I would have liked or expected. My wife had the Chicken Tostada, which she enjoyed. Both plates also had rice and black beans, which were good. While eating and finishing up, we noticed "Lurch" appearing to be texting or something on his phone, never coming by to ask if everything was OK or if we needed anything, beverage refill, etc. Finally after we completely finished and ready to go, he came by and wanted to know if we wanted dessert. Replied with a NO, he then brought us the bill. One other thing that needs to be mentioned, is the fact that they add 3% to the bill to cover EMPLOYEE HEALTH CARE. This is BULLSHIT. Had I known this was the case, I would have gone elsewhere. It's not the money (72 cents), WHERE DOES IT STOP. How much are we supposed to pay for. CHILDCARE TOO????? Restaurants are saying they have to pass the expense on to its customers......keep this up and you won't have any! The customer is not the responsible party or the reason you are required to pay for the Healthcare, YOUR GOVERNMENT IS, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT OR YOU WILL BE THE ONES TO SUFFER.

First went to this restaurant a couple of years ago. The food was fine, though not exceptional, and it was overpriced for what it was. The outdoor seating area on warm evenings was the main draw. Returned earlier this evening for a meal. Had the same experience that Dena M. describes having on 4.11.2015. The menu has an overwhelming list of kinds of margaritas they offer, but I don't think the bartenders know what they are doing. Ordered a JalapeÃ±o Margarita. My glass had shreds of JalapeÃ±o, rather than muddled JalapeÃ±o, floating in the drink, and it tasted like sugar with no alcohol. My dining companion took the drink in to the bar and asked for a standard Margarita with Cointreau. That Margarita was not good either, but we did not want to keep asking for a new drink, The food was bad. We both had enchiladas. I asked if they had a tomatatillo sauce, which I remembered from an earlier visit. They said yes, but I received an odd tasting pureed green sauce which covered the overcooked, tough enchiladas. The glasses and dishes were not clean. The service was fine, but the servers don't have much to work with. We wanted to leave quickly, and asked for our bill. The second Margarita, which should have been a lower price than the speciality $12 JalapeÃ±o Margarita was billed at $14. We had to ask to have it changed to its actual price, which was $9. I would not dine here again.

The food and margaritas are wonderful, along with a pleasant outdoor seating area. We enjoyed a great lunch until our bill came. We were very surprised to see a 3% surcharge for employee health care. I think the food prices should be enough to cover this cost. We usually tip 20% but lowered it to 17% because of this charge.

Blue Agave has a lot to offer! I found their dishes unique and delicious. FOOD: The chips and salsa : The chips had a distinct "corn nuts" taste in a very good way. Questioned the salsa options-the darker the color, the hotter the salsa-easy enough. Mild & hot were my favs-all were good. Meaning, if all they brought was medium salsa I would have been pleased, not knowing what I was missing. BF preferred medium salsa, stating mild was too sweet and HOT was too HOT (is this even possible?!) Their enchiladas del mar-that creamy enchilada sauce though! Not your typical ol red sauce. I tried their Charlee sauce (jalapeÃ±os, capers & garlic) compliments to the genius who concocted this combo! The ball of rice in center of plate was covered in a thin layer of melted cheese. Well done chef, well done! They wet my whistle with description on menu. When dish arrived, I was blown away with special touches and "extras" (not mentioned.) Under promise, over deliver - you're onto something Blue Agave! ATMOSPHERE: Must sit outside...good vibes here. We experienced the common wobbly table syndrom - an easy fix! Our table sat next to a tree and one of their speakers. Audio volume wasn't too loud for conversation. Tunes selection was what you'd expect. As dusk approached the lights turned on. Metal men can be seen guarding the grounds, pressuring you to take a photo with them and lube em with oil... SERVICE: Efficient & quick! Our drink order was promptly taken and food came out efficiently after ordering. Desert was offered. Dropping off the check was short & sweet - he'd already made sure we had everything we desired and seemed to be busy and working hard! THE CHALLENGE: The only challenge here was the foreign cursive calligraphy font selected to title dishes on menu. Many were difficult to make out- thankfully, you can point and server takes over. Are you looking for a place with nice ambiance but has expensive Mexican food? This is the place. Located in downtown Pleasanton, the outdoor seating on their beautiful patio is very quaint especially on summer nights when they even have live music. I had the tostada combo for lunch and it was decent but the price a little steep. The burritos are huge and delicious but not worth $15 each. Especially when you can get a good burrito for half that price at Chipotle. The salsa and chips were addicting though.

My wife and I have been wanting to come here for years and, somehow, have never made it. On Nov. 9 my wife had a "significant" birthday and I decided that this was the place to go. I have heard many excellent reports but was a little nervous about it since we were inviting 13 guests to share this evening with us. I am happy to report that no one was disappointed. They had us set up for an outside table but some of the guests thought it was too chilly so they quickly accommodated us with an inside table. The service was excellent, the food was great and everything was dealt with efficiently and professionally. Plus, our server kept us laughing. We will be back again soon. Gary L

Came here with 9 co-workers to celebrate some big changes in our company. Service wasn't terrible but it wasn't great, I'll give them some credit since it was a busy lunch hour. I don't eat meat so I ordered a quesadilla and munched on some chips and salsa. I'd give the place 3 stars but two days later 3 other co-workers and myself became very ill with food poisoning. (I have never had food poisoning from something so innocuous as a quesadilla!) When a co-worker called to inform the restaurant that something had made people sick, we were given the impression that we weren't the only one's calling in about food poisoning (Manager:"oh are you the wife of the guy that got sick?" Coworker: "no, but half of my work team is out sick. Did other people get sick from your food"? Manager: "oh, no I must have misspoken".) For all that misery they offered us a free lunch. I really like this place. The patio is great and the margaritas are delicious. The food is not bad, but the prices are really inflated considering what you get. The chips and salsa are really good, they have some pretty distinctive salsa.

Blue Agave was just ok for me. I liked the ambience--we sat inside because it was a chilly night, but the patio looked fantastic. Inside was quaint and no complaints there. The chips were not good--thick, "burnt-like" and dark with no salt. I was actually happy because they were not a temptation for me, whatsoever. They only offer two types of salad dressings: bleu cheese and caesar. So no salad for me. You have to ask for the red enchilada sauce--they have, but it's not on the menu. The only enchilada sauces listed on the menu are mole, creamy seafood sauce and corn truffle. I'm sure they are all good, but I wanted basic. So off I went with the Trinity Enchilada (cheese enchiladas) topped with red sauce and grilled chicken. I enjoyed my meal very much--not the lightest of meals, but still good. I would definitely go back and alter what I order so I don't need a wheel-barrel to get out of there. I'm not complaining, I'm not in a race to go back, I'm just in the middle of the road, hanging out. I could see the patio being a fantastic way to spend an evening during the summer. I'll see you again this summer, Blue Agave!

I love eating here! The big patio is lovely at night with live music and heat lamps. My favorite is the Mercado Maragarita, their spin on a "skinny" maragarita with cucumber and fresh lime juice. The food is a tad bland and overpriced but the service and atmosphere make up for it. Would be nice if they boxed leftovers for you.

I have a really difficult time loving this place because I just don't feel like it's really that authentic... The chips aren't that great, the beans aren't that delicious... I can't even remember what I ate. I do love the location here though. It's right down the street from my office so it makes it easy to just grab something and head out. I'm shocked by the low ratings for this place. Five co-workers and I had lunch here. We got a table on the patio. No problems. We shared some appetizers, had a couple pitchers of margaritas, and entrees. When we finished up, our waiter (I think he might also be one of the owners) brought us out a plate with 3 desserts to share ON THE HOUSE (and we didn't complain or anything). The service, for the most part, was great. The waiter was prompt with our drinks and appetizers, and the bussers kept us filled up with chips and salsa as well as water and refills. There was a considerable delay between our appetizers and drinks being brought out and our entree order being taken, for which I almost knocked off a star, but I can see how the waiter might have thought to not interrupt since we were enjoying ourselves. The price? Well it's not a cheap restaurant by any means, but it's also not overpriced for what you get. Tips: * I recommend the Blue Agave Margarita. The Cadillac Margarita paled in comparison. *The the desserts we got were a chocolate mousse type dessert in a bowl made from chocolate with raspberry sauce, tres leches cake, and (banana?) flan. The tres leches was AMAZING and the mousse was also very good. The flan was mediocre at best. * For an appetizer, I liked the cheese with chorizo with the flour tortilla. I also tried it with the chips (as a dip), but the chips were a bit overpowering. *I stayed away from the Enchilada del Mar based on other reviews here. I had the Enchilada de Mole. It was FANTASTIC (and not all mole's are good).

So Ive always wanted to try this place. I live close and drive by it all the time. I finally got a chance to try it out a month or so back. I wasnt too impressed. Food was ok. Their mole was good. Other than that, their portions arent too big and their prices were a bit high. Not really authentic Mexican food either. I thought the place was cute and unique tho. It seems like a house turned restaurant. Nice outdoor seating downtown Pleasanton. But, overall....just an ok experience. Probably wont be back anytime soon tho.

I had high hopes for this place.. First off, made reservations for Saturday evening with no problem, I thought. I was taking my elderly parents out for a dinner celebration for my moms birthday.., yippy right. Wrong. This Saturday evening turned out to be rather warm out by evening still. When we arrived I asked for indoor seating.. Even though they have a great patio for dinners but I needed climate control for the parents. There was no indoor seating.. Actually I was told the indoor seating was closed...What?? Ok, I thought I will make sure they stay hydrated... Omg. Asking for water was like asking for blood of a virgin or something. But the 32.00 pint of margarita showed up right away. We emptied it pretty quick and I took the empty pitcher to the bar.. Btw is located in the closed indoor area. I asked the bartender for the pitcher to be filled with ice water. The bartender declined my request and said our server would have to bring us water and did I know there was a drought. Smiled politely at her still with the pitcher in my hand and started to walk back to our table, briefly stopping at the soda/beverage area and filled the pitcher myself. Our server never did bring any water for the parents.. Prices of the food are crazy expensive and just tasted ok. I had the grilled eggplant for 28 bucks.. Kinda disappointed My parents never complained but I knew they were uncomfortable in the heat Party of four.. Let me point something out real quick: Service makes it or breaks it for me. You can have delicious food, but if your service doesn't match, then I can sacrifice your food for a place that's mediocre but provides me with excellent service. I'm all about the people, and where my money goes matters to me. Ok, so with Blue Agave - your food was great. Delicious even. Had the nice kick I look for in my spices. Unfortunately, your service felt like a kick too. My family and I came in on a nice Sunday afternoon and were greeted (sorely) by hostess, Taylor. She sat us outside, which was fine, I just needed to be under an umbrella per health issues. I asked her if we could move to an open table with an umbrella, and she said, "I might need that." When I pointed to another, she said, "I might need that too." Tried one more table. "I might need that too." Mind you, lunch had just begun, and there were only 3 other tables filled including our own...on a deck of about 20 tables or so. Hmmm... I asked our server if we could move. He said, "I don't know." And that was it - I didn't see him walk to the hostess to let him know we'll be moving. We moved anyway. Our family's joke for the rest of the week began with "I might..." Good bye, Blue Agave. You might not see our faces there anymore. You can have your umbrellas.

Went to Blue Agave for dinner on a Saturday night and what started off great with the appetizers quickly went downhill. The service was terrible and it was impossible to get their attention. I ordered the house special steak, medium well and it came up mooing. Took me a good 10 minutes to flag down a waiter to take it back, where my steak disappeared and came back the same, super bloody. We also ordered the pork ribs which were just okay. Not worth the money for sub par mexican food and bad service. I second the opinion you are better off just going to Chipotle.

Ah yes, the Blue Agave. A landmark in downtown Pleasanton, smack dab in the middle of Main Street. This converted Victorian house is certainly charming, and has several converted dining rooms and a bar inside, along with patio seating out in front. Sipping margaritas with excellent company, whilst watching the world go is one of my favorite pastimes. Pleasant, but pricey. The service? Excellent. Hector and I clicked immediately and I felt just a little James Bondish when I was able to order our third round of margaritas with a glance and a nod across the patio. My friend was impressed when they just appeared, right on cue. So great service but let's dwell on those margaritas just a bit. I would have given Blue Agave four stars if not for the outright gouging on the margarita prices. Understand, these margaritas, though tasty, are not the kind that you can stand on the rim of the glass and dive into. They are small, and loaded with ice. Four or five sips, tops. Three margaritas each for my friend and me, at $8 a pop, and we were quickly running up the bill. That comes off as more than more than un poquito greedy. Then again if you call after hours or when they are busy, they refer to themselves on the answering machine as a "high-end Mexican restaurant." I had no idea there was such a thing, but life is about learning new things. The atmosphere of the place is nice, right down to the solo vocalist/guitarist in the corner singing everything from Roger Miller, to Beatles, to Eagles hits (nothing more recent than 1980s). Not a single Mexican song--and I was just fine with that. The menu is limited and they change it out every season (though last summer's looked a lot like this summer's). My friend had the Mole Poblano. Basically it's shredded chicken in chocolate sauce. She let me try some--too sweet for me but my friend explained the whole chocolate/woman thing. Still working on that over here! I had the Enchiladas del Mar, which is two enchiladas with brine shrimp inside, "smothered with creamy seafood sauce." Glad I got that on the side. There was easily 1,000 calories in that little bowl of sauce on the side, and nothing in it made me think "seafood." So the food is interesting and decent, the service was great, but best I can figure the whole self-proclaimed "high-end" designation comes from the location, guitar, and $8 margaritas. Will I be back? Considering for two entrees and six margaritas, I dropped a C-note before tip, the answer is "occasionally." I will have to save up!

I absolutely love the quant charm of the old Victorian-style house this restaurant is in. I wanted to love the concept of a unique twist on gourmet Mexican food, but this place fell somewhat short of my (high) expectations. I had the Trinity Enchaladas - the prospect of three types of cheeses, and corn truffle sauce sounded great, but ended up being rather bland. I much preferred my boyfriend's order of the Enjococado. We ended up swapping plates. I found the atmosphere of this restaurant to be quite pretentious... which I am generally fine with, IF the food is amazing. Definitely not amazing, and quite expensive. Service was mediocre at best.

Upon arriving at Blue Agave, it was a place I really wanted to like. Mexican Tequila bar with an awesome patio? I immediately imagined myself swinging arm and arm with friends and drinking tequila whilst devouring mole poblano until we passed out. Not so fast. The food is ridiculously overpriced for what they give you. While the Colorado burrito I had was ok, it was hardly $17 delicious. I'm pretty sure most people in my party of 8 agreed that their dishes were also just "meh" given what they paid. And if you're going to include a 20% gratuity charge for a party of 8, then your service better be deserving of a 20% charge. Not servers unsure about who ordered what 20%. Or forgetting my brother's beer 20%. Or having to wave you down twice to get extra chips 20%. I would completely get that if this were some taqueria, but if you're going to include gratuity in your bill, your better darn well be ready to provide service that matches it. But the last straw is that they charged us $3 bucks for hot sauce, and didn't tell us that until we got our bill. First off, who charges for hot sauce. And who doesn't tell their patrons it'll be $3 for it? While the place looks nice, there are way too many other great Mexican places in the bay area for me to come racing back.

Had to take a drive to get here but I am always looking for great Mexican food and I found a dish that I don't normally order. I can't remember the name but it was chicken in a cream sauce and it was amazing! Chips were fresh and home made and three salsas accompanied them. We also split a chicken quesadilla that was so perfectly done with a nice little bite to it. Everything seems to be made in kitchen. I will definitely return.

I was there for the Mothers' Day brunch, so it's a little difficult to comment on the restaurant's normal operation. The building is a beautiful Victorian and there is a huge private, covered patio for al fresco dining. There was live music, very nice. The service was quite good. The food was good, but not outstanding, and they at times were overwhelmed and having trouble with the logistics (not replacing dishes fast enough, having to send back for more eggs for the omelettte bar, etc.). I tried the cooked to order Huevos Rancheros with black beans, some fresh fruit, and a yummy cheesecake. They were quick to replenish the Mimosas and coffee. The pricetag of $30 seemed a bit steep. I guess the value depends on how much you eat and drink. For a moderate diner/drinker, it is expensive. But the lovely atmosphere made it worthwhile.

I love the ample patio seating at this restaurant. The husband and i came her on a whim on evening and had the pleasure of sitting outside in the warm evening air. They had a guitarist playing and he really added a nice ambiance. The Menu was disappointing as this is fancier Mexican dining rather then more traditional fare. I got the combo plate ( because it was the most traditional food i found on the menu) which comes with a chili relleno, chicken enchilada in a dark mole sauce, and grilled hanger steak. The steak it where it is at! Both of us really enjoyed it. The mole sauce was bitter and overwhelming on the plate. I enjoyed the relleno since it was spicy and not breaded. Hubby got the Seafood burrito which was too fishy tasting to be enjoyable. We love the ambiance but I would appreciate some more menu options.

I'm going to get straight to the point- the food was crap. I ordered the Enchiladas Del Mar- tasted like they definitely had some curry powder in the mix... Who the hell would think of combining curry powder and enchiladas?? Worst of all who would approve this decision? My mom ordered the Mole which she claimed to have tasted like canned sauce. Yuckkkkkkkk. Everyone who worked here was very nice, the lady who brought our chips, the guy who poured our water and the food runner, our waiter though was a little on the awkward side... Anyhow, 2 entrees for 40 dollar, not the most expensive meal I had, not the cheapest either, but def not worth 20 dollars a plate, I'm thinking 10.99 at the most.

This is probably one of the top 5 Mexican restaurants I have ever been to. So Damn Good. Camarones Emperado with the 8 different sauces is so incredible. Its nice being able to live a life where you can always look forward to trying one of the different version of this dish,. My favorite is the Eric. A nutty, spicy chipotle sauce. The ragin hot A la diabla is tough to pass up. The garlic and olive oil offering will please the dainty, feminine types. I do not think I have had any better Mole than here. The ques fondito with Chorizo is pure sin. Oh yeah, Maragerita situation is incomparable.

Came here after a wonderful afternoon of Wine Tasting in Livermore. We were hungry and looking to have a nice relaxing dinner. My BF recommended this place. The food was very delicious. I had a Tortilla Soup that was way more authentic than what I would get at Chili's. Their Tres Leche cake, WOW! Delicious stuff. I loved the outside restaurant motif. It was a beautiful evening and the noise level was not as loud as it would have been inside the restaurant. The heating lamps help when it starts to get chilly. Their margaritas are in small glasses but they are packed with flavor! I only give it 4 starts for two reasons: 1) They don't open for dinner until 5:30 so we had to kill time and survive on almonds for an hour (not their fault at all but we didn't know they closed during certain times) 2) When dining outside, you have that risk of being approached by a flower vendor and almost feel obligated to buy when they keep returning. I'll definitely return here again!

We had been given a gift card for Blue Agave, so my husband and I decided to give it a try because we LOVE Mexican food. We went in the evening, on a night when they were having a big fundraiser. The cause was a good one, so that didn't bother us. What did bother us was the fact that it was COLD on the patio, and our table was itty bitty. My hubby is a big guy, so it was kind of uncomfortable for him at such a little table and with little chairs. We got some guacamole that was sub-par. Honestly, I can make better guac. This was bland, except for some heat...no real nice flavor. The food was only so-so. Definitely nothing to write home about. We enjoyed the drinks, and the live music, but the rest was about as bland as the guacamole.

Oh so painful. I hosted my daughters bridal shower in the back yard, . The manager tried everything to maximize profit and not take care of the customers. He thought he was being funny to make me happy, didn't accomplish it one little bit. I just smiled and joked with him to pull off this event for my daughter. My final straw was when he refused to move a table that was in the sun, for some of the guests. He yelled at florist, for dripping water. Not happy. What you have to do to make a person happy, just to pull off an event. Don't do it, not worth it.

Have been here a couple of times but not for a few years. Setting is beautiful but the food, although unusual and fancy, just doesn't taste that great. Pitchers of margarita's are small and filled with ice cubes, not enough for three people. You can make your own exotic margaritas that taste just as good- Coach House Liquors & Deli on the Cupertino-Saratoga border has the best tequila selection in the bay area. Remembering a fancy Mexican restaurant in Seattle that acted insulted when I asked for chips- "Oh no, we're an upscale restaurant." I have yet to find an "upscale" Mexican restaurant that tastes better than a great traditional type restaurant.

GREAT place for lunch. Still good for dinner, but there are fewer choices on the menu. It is so lovely to sit outside and people watch on a sunny afternoon. Especially with fantastic food and drinks! Margarita and tequila selections here are awesome- definitely plan on getting a drink! I love the blended strawberry margarita on a hot day. My absolute favorite thing here Is the Ensalada de Pollo. Wow. This must be my favorite salad ever. The best shredded chicken you may ever eat, with crisp greens and vegetables, ripe avocado, and tasty cheese. So fresh and wonderful. I love taking the chicken and cheese and putting them on the chips. I could eat this every day! Most chicken dishes here are amazing. Another favorite is the Enjococado chicken, as enchiladas or on its own. It's rich and delicious, made all the better by all the melted cheese they put on it. After writing this review, I am getting this for dinner, because I am now reminded of how awesome it is. Do yourself a favor and do the same!

Where shall I begin... There 100 year old Chicken recipe.. Well it tasted like it was from a 100 year old Chicken. Rubbery and cold with a little cinnamon sprinkled on top!!! Sad but true... They serve your food nice and cold and your (ice) tea nice and warm. The server brought my food first and then my supposed to be (ice) tea 15 minutes after our food was served. The chips and salsa were the highlight of the night, but don't even attempt to ask for more. They will ignore you. The servers are hash slingers like they are from Mel's Diner. Horrible!! A colleague and I came here for lunch last week and were lucky enough to snag a comfy outdoor spot under the huge oak tree. The ambiance was great and made for a very relaxing meal. Pleasanton can get really warm but this particular day, the weather was a perfect 78. Even more perfect under the shaded area. The chips and three different salsas they provide to each table were great. The three salsas just ranged from mild, spicy to hot. I personally liked the hot the best. Seemed to have the most rounded flavors. For our entrees, we both ended up ordering the same thing; Two grilled fish tacos on corn tortillas. It comes with a side of rice and beans but we both opted to have a side salad instead of the beans. Fish tacos were edible but they were bit under seasoned. I don't use much salt in my own cooking so if I have to add salt, something isn't right. With a quick shake of salt over my tacos and a fresh squeeze of lime, it helped with the flavors quite a bit. Service was great and we got our food pretty fast. I was envious of everyone sipping on cocktails around me. I wish I could've enjoyed a margarita or large glass of sangria but perhaps next time when I'm not with a client. A pretty decent restaurant but had to dock one star for taste. I'm willing to give them another try in the future, for sure.

They got 3 stars for the most superficial of reasons: Gorgeous, dreamlike patio seating with azul metal chairs, sunlight streaming through umbrellas, the most amazing tap water I've ever had, the complimentary chips and trio of salsas, attentive service. Unfortunately the food was on a one or two star level. Ordered the burrito de chile verde and was terribly disappointed. Their green sauce is obnoxiously citrus flavored and the burrito was really just a giant enchilada. The refried black beans tasted like bananas and the rice was mushy. The boyfriend, who is an eternal optimist, wasn't too pleased with his combination plate: cheese enchilada and pork tostada. He reports that the tostada was good (however, he totally loves overcooked pork), but the red sauce on the enchilada tasted "too sweet, too tomatoey." I really really really wanted to love this place, but they either need to replace the head chef or start experimenting with some new (better) recipes. Maybe Gordon Ramsay should help.

Robert picks the restaurants and I get to review them! I'm a Margarita snob, and I asked our wonderful server for a Margarita, and I told him what I wanted in it(I didn't look at the menu). He brought me a wonderful Margarita(I was already happy!). Robert had a chicken burrito, and I had chicken quesadillas(both delish). The chips and salsa were great. They have the nicest patio, and it's so much fun sitting outside on a beautiful day. The bar is very quaint, but was unused when we were there. Service was OK. Yay! I'm a fan!

This review is for a large private event I organized at Blue Agave in July 2013. I was in charge of planning a local High School reunion for 120 guests. With less than a month until the reunion date, I experienced issues with the original venue, Barones. I called upon Blue Agave to save the day, and they ended up exceeding my expectations. I worked with Blue Agave's event planner, Julio, and he was the most enjoyable person to work with. Reasons to hold a private event at Blue Agave: - Flexibility: Julio was so unbelievably flexible. He let me change the time of the event the week before; he didn't bat an eye when the guest list increased the day before. He created a flexible food and drink package to best suit the event. - Budget: He worked with my budget and executed everything perfectly. There weren't any hidden fees and everything was exactly as promised. He can work with any budget. - Friendly staff: We had many people working our event and the staff was friendly and helpful. Our private bar was greatly staffed and food was prepared well. - Food & Drinks: I heard a lot of compliments on the food that was served as well as the drinks. - Responsive: Organizing a large event can be stressful and it was really nice knowing that Julio would answer any of my calls or emails very promptly. He was always available to chat about the details of the event. Julio was amazing in every way and even decorated the event space in the high school colors. He went above and beyond to make sure everything went smoothly and everyone had a great time. I can't recommend him enough and would happily host another event in the future at Blue Agave.

Well the patio is awesome, had no problems with the service, but the menu is minimal. The mixed drinks were a bit weak for MY liking, therefore a bit too expensive. I asked for chips and salsa, but I was told they didn't have any... Not sure if they were OUT or it wasn't on the menu, and to me, when I go to a Mexican restaurant, being as CAUCASION as can be, I want a good margarita on the rocks and some good chips and salsa!! Lol but I guess I recommend you checking it out at least once... The experience wasn't bad, just slightly disappointing!

My in-laws were in town and we wanted to find a middle ground between San Jose & East Bay. We decided on this cute little place in downtown Pleasanton. I personally have never been to Pleasanton, outside of driving by it on the freeway. I was pleasantly surprised.. The Blue Agave is set in a very cute quaint little downtown area. For dinner we had outdoor seating, which i thought would be a bad idea for 730pm on a November night. Surprisingly with all the heaters around, it was a beautiful setting. I bet this place would be even more perfect on a hot summer night. The decor and the setting was absolutely beautiful. The staff was attentive and courteous. We had a table for 7, there was plenty of space for my young daughter to run around without being in anyone's way. The food was great, i had the braised ribs with some type of pickled cabbage. There was also live music, one guitarist taking requests, he was pretty good. He played a lot of modern music on an acoustic guitar. it was GREAT. I highly recommend this place, it's very cute, very romantic, and great outdoor space to have a nice dinner. It is a little pricey though.

Came here for a girls night. Service was horrible. We never had anyone attending to us, it was whomever passed our table that we could stop. A really good example of their over all attitude was that they had the front door open and it was freezing (the table next to us had all their jackets on) and when I asked a guy to close the door, he acted super annoyed. The table next to us thanked me though. Soup was worse than the service. Considering this is the ONLY soup on the menu I would have thought it would be fantastic. NOPE. It was a thick as Ketchup and tasted ONLY like Chili powder. And the TWO pieces of chicken that were in the soup tasted dryer than a bone. There was not anything good about this soup. The chips were cold and when a few of us were late got there, they didn't bring out warm chips (not sure if they even offer that) but if they do they should have brought warm chips. I had wine, glass was dirty. Asked for a straw, never got it. My friend wanted a to-go box, she had to go into the kitchen to ask someone to bring her one. Will never be back.

4 stars because of my main course, a perfectly cooked white fish and with a yummy cilantro sauce, and the ambiance- outdoors, warm, charming. However, the rest of the dishes were not so good- tostadas were too saucy. the soup tasted slightly burnt which left a bitter aftertaste.

Wednesday nights (during the street fair-summertime) are the best nights to come!! They have a DJ in the back patio area and a mini bar as well. I haven't had the chance to try the food here but their chips and salsa are pretty fresh. I'm going to come back for dinner sometime and eat outside on their front patio the venue there is really intriguing.

Way overrated. The only reason it gets any stars is the nice Main St. location and the beautiful large street-front patio seating. I am amazed this place can stay in business, the service is unbelievably slow and not very friendly or personable. The food is so so at best, and you pay premium prices. I don't mind paying for a good experience, but there is almost nothing but a location to this place. Avoid it if you can. If you're going to spend this kind of money you might as well go to Esin for dinner where the service is great and the food is terrific.

Went without reservation and were seated quickly. Service was quick and excellent especially our waiter who was very friendly to talk to. Even replaced an entree that I didn't quite like at no cost of course. That's customer service !

I have lived in Pleasanton for a long time now. I have seen The Blue Agave Club many many times and it has always looked like a beautiful place to eat. However, I had never taken the opportunity to actually eat there. Until tonight. I am in complete shock that this restaurant is still in business. In my mind this restaurant only proves one thing true. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! Our hostess was polite and gave us an excellent table. Our server gave us time to get settled before he came over to ask for our drink order, and he gave us some time to enjoy our chips and drinks before we ordered. It was leisurely paced, but enjoyably so. Our server and the hostess do not deserve the rating I gave! They are the only reasons that this rating is not 1 star. The patio, especially on a night like tonight, is a gorgeous place to eat! The old style charm of this building and downtown Pleasanton make for a tremendous ambiance. Sitting there enjoying the chips and salsa; I felt like I was on vacation in my own home town. Right now you must be confused. Up until this point we were having an amazing meal. Then we got our food. My wife ordered the Tortilla Soup and I ordered the Trinity Enchiladas. The soup was horrendous. It was as if they opened a can of tomato sauce poured it in a bowl with a bit of chicken and tortilla chips. I could give them the benefit of the doubt and say that they accidentally boiled all the broth out, but then they should never have served it. It was so overly tomato saucy that my wife was forced to send it back. I tasted the soup as well and completely agreed. She asked for a green salad instead and it was acceptable. Whoever said "You eat with your eyes first" is correct. Your food must not only be prepared well but it should also be appetizing to look at. The plate that was served to me was two cheese enchiladas with a thick black sauce poured over the top. No, it was not a mole. It was not advertised as a mole on the menu, and it didn't taste anything like a mole. It was a "Corn Truffle Sauce" according to the menu. It looked like SLOP! It was so unappetizing that it was difficult for me to even take my first taste. Thankfully it did not taste like what it looked like! It was not horrible tasting on its own but it was bad, and there was so much of it that it was overwhelming the entire dish. Of the two cheese enchiladas only one of them was acceptable to eat after I scrapped the sauce completely off of it. In fact I could tell that it was made with a wonderful cheese that was completely wasted in this dish. The other fell completely flat in my opinion as even the cheese was bland. My wife joked that they should have poured the "tortilla soup" over the enchiladas. Not a single thing we ordered suggested that any of the other food could be good enough for me to return. To put it simply; the food at this restaurant was so bad that I cannot recommend that anyone eat here. For the price I paid at this restaurant I would have expected the food to be at least passable. It was not! This restaurant is successful as a Tequila bar only. It seems like a nice place to sit down to have some chips and salsa and a tequila or two.

I just came from dinner there. It started with chips that were cold. Then my food came, the trinity enchiladas, they were room temperature, not hot at all. Like the plate had been sitting on a counter all evening. Will not go back.

The only plus I found for this place was the outside patio. So much so that the inside of the restaurant was completely EMPTY. I wonder if this place does well in the cold/rainy season because the patio seems to be the big draw here. This is definitely not authentic Mexican food and it's waaaay to pricey for what you get. I wonder if the taste is catered to the people in Pleasanton but I imagine anyone living in California knows what good Mexican food should taste like. We ordered the chorizo queso dip as a starter, which was ok. Two of us ordered the "award-winning" tortilla soup .. I mean how could we not order it when it's "award-winning." OMG, what a let down - I don't know what competition that soup was entered into but that tortilla soup was one of the worst I've had. Firstly, the soup only comes in one size .. WAY too large to have room for anything else. Secondly, the broth was very thick and tasted more like a canned enchilada sauce than it did a tomato/chicken based broth. The chicken was overcooked and was a little tough to eat. My entree was the Enjococado 100-year Old Family Recipe, which I was excited to try. Again, the chicken was over cooked and dry .. even after being "drenched" in this sour cream based sauce. I did not enjoy the flavors at all. The rice was surprisingly good though. The rest of group thought their entrees were only OK as well. At the end of the night, our bill came out to $200 for four people. While $50/pp might be ok, I felt like none of us loved our food to warrant spending that much money. We'll not be back to this place. We did see a little taqueria on one of the side streets that we may try next time. The food will probably be infinitely better and we'll pay a fraction of the price!

This is just horrible !! Over priced can you say. I had to look over the menu about 3 times to make sure I was not missing something such as ''organic '' or free range meat. Nope I wasn't a cheese ques with a side of rice after tax pretty much $20.00. Once we got our food no one had checked up on us, I was not about to pay $30.00 for a dish that should cost half that price. I will not be back

I'm going to keep this review short and to the point. I ordered a combo with skirt steak , enchilada . I received a flank steak shaved extremely thin and chicken enchilada. Steak wasn't the kind of steak they offered on the menu... Not a skirt steak.... It was a dry flank steak! dry and tasteless.. The chicken enchilada was dry and sauce was like cheap spaghetti sauce.. Kind of sweet! I received about 3 ounces of black beans and the cost was 24.99. Simply outrageous... The salsa was so small I could barely dip the chip.. And when I asked for hotter salsa I got charged 5.00 more on my bill for 2 small refills... The setting is beautiful, however.... This place is way too expensive and tasteless... Never, ever will I return.

For an overly pretentious, over priced Mexican restaurant, Blue Agave did not hit the mark. After going to music in the park in downtown Pleasanton to see an old friend play in a Latin band called Ruckatan, we were starved and decided to try this place out. I ordered one of their signature dishes called Plato Huitzilopoxtli. For $24 you get a grilled skirt steak, mole enchilada, and chile relleno, with guacamole, rice, and black beans. My skirt steak was over cooked and was probably the toughest steak I have ever had the displeasure of eating. However, the seasonings on the steak were good. The only thing you could taste on the enchilada was the mole sauce and it was too sweet with not enough of the rich flavor that I am accustomed to in Mole. The chile relleno was a little on the tough side and the cheese did not seem quite right for chile relleno. The guacamole was very good, however the beans and rice had little to no flavor. The atmosphere is wonderful, the staff is friendly and efficient, I can only wish the food had not bombed so badly.

The atmosphere is still terrific, but the food seems to be going downhill here. Chips were overdone - brownish. They're still probably the best tortilla chips around, but for the price of a meal here they should be. I've eaten here a few times before, often enough to know that the ones we got were too dark. They should have thrown away the whole batch and done them again. Margarita came out with too much sour mix. If I'd known they were going to bury the liquor in that, I would have just ordered the house version. They used to be more careful and use more lime juice. Wife had the salmon with confetti vegetables. Salmon was OK. The vegetables were way overcooked. The poblano tomatillo sauce was overwhelmed by the tomatillos and a lot of cream. My dinner continued the overcooked theme. I had the Plato Huitzilopoxtli. It comes with 3 items: hanger steak, chicken mole enchilada, and a chile relleno. The chili was OK. I like that they don't bread it at all. The sauce was good. The cheese was kind of generic - not sure if it was just a lump of monterey jack or if they started with something better and killed it. I wouldn't expect a hanger steak to come out rare, but what I got was so overcooked that even with the provided steak knife it tended to tear rather than cutting cleanly (knife could have been sharper too). It was topped with a couple of very sad, limp grilled green onions. The worst part of my meal was the chicken mole enchilada. I've had their mole before, and it is more bitter than some other places. I expected and even wanted that. What I didn't expect or want was how dry the chicken was. It's almost like they microwaved plain chicken breast, wrapped the tortilla around it, and covered the whole thing with sauce. Daughter had the cheese enchiladas. She says they were OK, so they must have tasted a lot better than they looked. Other's have commented on the appearance of the corn truffle sauce. They're not kidding - it looks pretty bad. Hopefully the owners will wake up and get the kitchen back on track.

I had a hard time deciding on giving it 3 stars or 4. Finally decided to give it 3 because it was OK, and I can't really say I'm a fan because this was my first time here and can only go by this experience. If I could, I'd give them 3.5 stars :-) We came here last night to celebrate my friend's birthday. Despite the cooler weather, we decided to sit out on the patio and there were strategically placed heaters around the area, so that was good since I'm usually always cold. I started out with the house Cabernet and my friend asked for a "good Margarita" on the rocks and they brought him the CEO, which he said was very good. We started out with the chips and 3 different types of salsas. For our dinners, we each had a shrimp entree - I had the Camarones Margarita which had a sauce made of tequila, triple sec and lime, and my friend had the Camarones Xochitl which was voted Best Dish from Diablo Magazine. His had what looked like the Mole sauce and both dishes came with spanish rice and a vegetable. The dinners were good, a little pricey, but there was plenty of food. We then shared the Banana Foster and called it a night :-) Service was attentive without hovering and we never felt rushed. Cute area of Pleasanton.

Hot rods, muscle cars, my muscle man, beer and guacamole. Happy Sundays are made of these. I've never really strolled Pleasanton, and honestly, found it abundantly pleasant. I thought the menu to be a wee bit overpriced, but I indulged in a salad and enjoyed it just fine. We sat out in the sun, the servers were attentive and nice, and the band played live on their front porch. It was just a lazy Sunday afternoon, post-car show and we were in need of some refueling. I may come back if in the area to try some tequila, but it may not be for a while...

Came here this week and I was not impressed. First off...there's always confusion being seated here..do you wait outside or inside? people are always wandering around lol. There needs to be a sign that says "Please wait here" Second: LIMITED MENU! holy crap..I have never seen a Mexican restaurant with such a limited menu. :( Third: EXPENSIVE! $$$$ 28 dollars for one dish here? $18 for a enchilada??! Pleasanton you have lost your mind! I am from down south, and I have eaten some of the BEST tamales and enchiladas out of ma and pa restaurants and street carts. If you charge $18 for an enchilada is better be AMAZING. My enchiladas were OK, but not worth the $$, I can go home and make 30 of them for that price. Service is CRAP! When we were first seated they were over attentive. They kept filling our water, checking up, then as soon as they took our order they disappeared. At one point we were wondering if they would ever show up again. Well, they got a crap tip because of it, their loss. Seriously though Pleasanton, you are getting ripped off. As we were leaving there was quit a few people out of the patio and I looked at my bf and asked "Have these people lost their minds!?" I guess people like to overpay for mediocre Mexican food here.

Nice setting, and love the hand-carved and colorfully painted chairs inside the restaurant. The menu offers a nice selection of regional Mexican favorites. Prices are on the high side. I had the Enchiladas suizzas, basically chicken enchiladas with a verde sauce. They were fine. My companion had the chili rellenos, and enjoyed the fresh chili, he mentioned that at least it wasn't a soggy canned Ortega chili. He did note that the filling and sauce were not exciting. My entree came with a side of black beans, that were rather tasteless. I prefer the classic pinto beans, and unless the menu states otherwise, would assume that pinto beans (in some variation) would accompany the food. To me, black beans just don't have the same zing, and seem more Caribbean-influenced than Mexican. My companion's dish came with rice, which was rather dry and not very flavorful. Contrast these uninspired side dishes with La Pinata's, which can stand on their own for deliciousness and flavor. For my palate, Mexican food has to be a lot better than what I could make at home, and my own green chili enchiladas far outshine Agave's. Hence, the 3 stars instead of 5. However, in all other respects, Agave rates 5 stars. However, if you have a charming dining companion, which was definitely the case when I visited, the most important part of the experience was already 5 stars. Service was friendly and helpful. Chips were nice, with a choice of 3 salsas. And, definitely order the coffee -- it is cinnamon-licious! ,

So, Pleasanton is not a bastion of great food, but a quick walk around the old town district (both blocks) had more than 5 places that served Latin inspired food. I get that this place is purported to be the "high end" of this cuisine (the decor is "spot on") but there is no excuse for bland rice and gelatinous beans. My chili rellenos was made with a nice chili, but the stuffing was bland and uninspired. I think for the money, you can do better. Mexican food should NOT be yawn inducing while eating. This was.

"What a charming place!" she said. Two women decide on Blue Agave for a casual business lunch outside. They have often passed the restaurant on main street, but have never dined there. Their waiter comes right away to take their beverage order and then comes back to take their lunch order. All is okay at this point. They both order the shrimp quesadillas, thinking it sounded perfect. Then, they wait. They wait, and wait, and wait. They look around and see it's not too busy, as it was past the lunch rush hour. They decide to inquire about their order and are assured it is on its way. They wait. They wait, and wait, and wait. FINALLY, it arrives. Hungry, but hoping their wait will be redeemed by a delicious lunch, they dive in. "Hmm, it's cold," they thought. One thinks, "Um...are these bay shrimp in my quesadilla?! For $11.75, I get a cold quesadilla with bay shrimp? I was expecting grilled prawns or at least shrimp of a decent size." To lighten the disappointment, one said, "I hear their margaritas are good, though..." Ah well. Needless to say, neither have been back since.

The only good thing of the meal was the chips and salsa. You might as well leave after that. Overpriced Mexican food that was ok at best. The food was covered in thick gloppy sauces. It somehow has quite a crowd but don't let that fool you. Staff was decent but way too expensive especially for the taste.

So DISAPPOINTED! We came here one night, as we were searching for a place for great Mexican food. We moved here recently and haven't found a great Mexican place yet. We came to the front entry way and found it "abandoned", as we got close to the hostess station, there was no one there....except for another family waiting to be seated. They said they'd been there about 10 min. Finally we called on our cell phone to the restaurant and someone came out from the back. At that point, underwhelmed by the service, on what was a special week dedicated to Downtown Eateries, we left and went elsewhere!

Another place I wanted to like but fell waaaaay short of the mark. Came here on a weeknight to meet some friends at their suggestion - will not be going back for anything but drinks. the good: The tequila selection was remarkable and they made the pitcher of margarita very well - actually calling it a pitcher is an insult to large volume beverage storage devices. I'm going to go with anemic carafe of margaritas instead. The bad: The prices for the food. Damn. If you are going charge that much, it should be good. note to owners: high price = higher expectations. The mediocre: the food. Aside from the queso "fondue" (not really a fondue), it was all very disappointing. I debated about putting the food into the bad column because we were so disappointed, but it wasn't really bad. Just not that good. The menu was splashed with descriptions of "award winning" meals and other similar explatives, but I'd really like to know who gave them these awards? their own kitchen staff? meh. Overall: If you must go, go for the drinks, leave for better food.

I think if you come here thinking this is your neighborhood mexican restaurant, you will go home disappointed. If you come here to fine din down south style and love margaritas, I think you wont be disappointed. For starters we went with Guacamole Totopos & the Chalupas de Camaron. Then a wonderful filet mignon spicy pomegranate-chilpotle reduction. was very good. And the bench mark of any Mexican restaurant is the salsa, theres is well balanced and tasty You must try the DR J Margarita! PS....The outside seating is great in spring.

A cool outdoor spot to enjoy some margaritas and Mexican food with a twist, on a warm summer evening! The patio/garden area in front of this restaurant is probably its most attractive feature. That, and the margaritas are refreshing and complementary to the homemade chips and salsa. We order the tostada classico appetizer to share. It came with three small tostadas topped with well-marinated shredded chicken and all sorts of lettuce, avocado, and the rest of the mexican fixings. A great place! I'd definitely come back for a full meal, as the menu had variety and wasn't your average boring burrito/taco type of joint.

It was time for another Team birthday lunch and they chose this place. I was excited because I've never been. It took me a loooooong time to choose my order. I finally ordered a Tatanka Burger- a bison burger. I thought yup something different. Well we pre ordered and when we got there I was informed that they did not have the Tatanka Burger or the Taquitos. 3 of us had to order something else. Bummer! I ended up with the $12 Carnitas sandwich. It was okay. It would've been delicious if it were $9 instead. You are paying for the atmosphere. The patio seating area had a great ambience. Overall I liked the place. I am just not sure about the food. One redeeming factor is that they still charged me the same price as the Tatanka burger ($7) for the carnitas sandwich. So I got a $12 dish for $7. Good customer service on their part. (applause)

Just moved to Pleasanton and was hoping to love this place, unfortunately, not the case. The patio is adorable and service was fine, but the food was underwhelming and way overpriced. I had $20 something dollar enchiladas with a great mole sauce but cold hard cheese on the inside. My husband had a watery chicken dish that tasted like overdressed Indian food and my brother-in-law won the ordering contest with a very average $18 burrito. I'll give it another try at some point because it's so stinking cute, but unless the next visit is drastically different it may be a place I only frequent for a glass of wine on the patio.

I have been coming to the Blue Agave for years. The food is incredibly consistent. Here is a list of some the best things there - Rice and Black Beans - incredible Plato platter for dinner - outstanding carne asada and mole enchilada Tostada appetizer - always excellent This isn't the classic mexican food out of a can (Go to Alberto's if you want that). The food has creativity and the ingredients are of high quality. Top that off with the best margaritas in the Bay Area and you have a great place to go to.

I had been wanting to try corn smut for the longest time..haha. It's also known as huitlacoche in Mexican cuisine. s3-media2.px.yelpcdn.comâ€¦ Shrimp was cooked well but the smut really did nothing for me. It said something about "best dish on menu" too. Kinda fungusy like a mushroom but not so special...real bummer. Ripe red JalapeÃ±o didn't make lotta sense..I prefer edible garnish that doesn't have my ears turning red and nose sweating. Yeah..it was hot. We also had the 100yr old chicken recipe dish with the sour cream based sauce and it flopped too. Made for good leftovers for work lunch though. The appetizers weren't memorable and I already forgot what they were. Atmosphere was nice for people watching but the service was less than friendly and professional at best, though I had to flag down our guy a few times. It was pretty busy so I'll cut him some slack. Bottom line is pretty disappointing. It's the usual trying to upscale or fusionize never tastes as good as the authentic stuff. It just adds to the price and gets you a nicer ambiance.

I had heard before hand that this place was really good, a little pricey, but good. I was excited when my friend took me there recently. Well, what I heard was right in terms of price...it was expensive. That was fine as we'd expected pricey. Unfortunately the quality did not match the price. I ordered chipolte chicken pasta and she had a chicken burrito. Neither of us was impressed. I found mine to be on the dry side and while it tasted okay (I guess) I expected more given the price. It didn't come with a salad either. Same thing in terms of the margaritas. They tasted good but were small for $12. Eating outside was nice but certainly not worth it. Overall I've had better Mexican food at a number of other local places, all of which were cheaper. I've also paid that much for a meal at other establishments and enjoyed it much more. OVER PRICED AND NOTHING SPECIAL.

Sitting on the Blue Agave's patio on a warm fall day, munching on an endless supply of chips with an assortment of 3 equally spicy salsa, waiting for an array of delicious dishes to present themselves for my inspection, definitely rates highly on ways to spend an evening. The enchiladas del mar are tough to beat, and the sampler entree with chilis, flank steak, and a chicken enchilada with a savory chocolate sauce is delicious.

This place is, probably, the most overrated establishment I have had the displeasure of patronizing. They drowned the shrimp in a thick, what I think was, black bean sauce. The sauce was identical to my dining companion's sauce which had a completely different description. The cherry on the proverbial sundae was the handling of the bill. Here's a word to the wise: when a customer pays with cash, don't assume the change is your tip. Our server decided to treat himself to an, undeserved, 25% tip.

Great for tequila or margaritas and chips. The selection of tequilas and margaritas can be overwhelming. However, the food is terrible and over priced. Trite, bland, luke warm fair. Our steak salad tasted fishy. Instead of getting a refund, our server gave us a free slice of cake. While it was a nice gesture, I rather would have had the $13 removed from our bill. Don't eat here!

Had a great time Sunday night with party of 11 for dinner on the patio. The lightening beautiful, the service was good. A nice place for large parties. It isn't my style of Mexican food. The mole sauce was too abudant and overwhelmed the whole platter of enchiladas and side dishes. I think the menu could use some readjustments. Perhaps a visit to El Charro in Lafayette would bring it around to a packed house that it could be. Nice people, though.

A girlfriend & I stopped by the Blue Agave for lunch yesterday while walking around the Pleasanton Art Festival. The restaurant has a great patio area in the front where you can sit & people watch. I can't comment on the quality of their Mexican food, as we both orders salads & margaritas. Pros: Service; we had a great waiter who was extremely attentive and friendly. Margaritas; they have dozens of different tequilas and margarita. I had a margarita that had cranbery jice & midori in it. It was delicious. Chips & salsa: I really liked their chips even though they needed a little more salt (everything I eat needs a little more salt) and they come with 3 different salsas. I loved the one that had a chipotle flavor. Cons: The salads were just average. They had the potential to be GREAT but both were a little "off". I ordered the Carne Asada salad. It looked great and there was a ton of stuff on the salad including a lot of steak. But where the salad missed the mark is that the steak was tough. I don't know if it was the cut of the meat or the way it was cooked but it made the salad less enjoyable than it should've been. My girlfriend ordered a salad that had grilled shrimp & scallops on it. The scallops were under-cooked which was disappointing. Overall, it was a good lunch and I didn't think the pricing was any different than similar restaurants in the Bay Area.

Too bad. I really had high hopes for this place. The ambiance and decor are fantastic (so it earns the 1 star). The food was undercooked; both our shrimp (supposedly the best item on the menu) and my string beans were raw (the shrimp was still see-through). We ordered the Shrimp Xochitl and the Basa. The Basa with the potato cake were bland. The house margaritas were weak. The chips and salsa were eh. Despite the fantastic outdoor seating, we will never return for food or drinks. So bummed it was so terrible.

I took my wife here for V-Day because I am such a romantic, great, wonderful husband and father and it was pretty good. The atmosphere was romantic (with musician playing the guitar) and heat lamps every where. Main Street is awesome in Pleasanton and makes for an excellent stroll after dinner. Anyway, the service was good but not great. When we arrived, they said that there were parties ahead of us and could not seat us right away? There was nobody else there waiting but us...? Just not a good first impression. After 5 miutes we were sat and served. The chicken breast with this crazy good sauce was absolutely amazing! The chicken was tender and great with flour tortillas. My wife got the chicken enchilladas. They were delicious as well. The waitress was busy, and took a while to come back when ever she left. Overall, very good food, good atmosphere, good service. Will definitely come back soon.

Went here for lunch today. Lunch was not on me, so that alleviated some of weight of the menu pricing. I was on the lookout for something large. Didn't have to be pricey, but large. It was the first question that I asked the server. Unfortunately, he did not provide me with many options. I have this feeling, he is normally asked, "what tastes good?" But in fact, I wanted quantity over quality if necessary. Anyway, I ended up choosing the steak ranchero priced at $17.50. It comes with rice and beans and tortillas. Unfortunately, again, for 3 dishes that used tortillas, we received only one basket. I suspect that one basket per entree would make the most sense, but that's probably why I don't own a restaurant. The chips and salsa were good. There was a variety of salsa available. I was happy that two had some spice to them. It was a very nice day so we sat outside. Too bad that couldn't make up for the less than spectacular service.

*Drinks Margarita's were watered down and just didn't have enough liquor. Not to mention that we had to remind them twice that we had even ordered drinks at all. Not sure if there is a bar inside since we sat outdoors so service and taste may be different if you're staring at them and giving them the stank eye. Side note on water refills: poor. If you're not going to bring the drink that I order can you at least refill my empty water glass? *Food The waiter was a little tricky when he brought out the complimentary chips and salsa he also asked if we wanted guacamole. He didn't say that it was an appetizer. He didn't say if we wanted to add it or start off with it. My soon to be in-laws just assumed it was an offer similar to the chips and salsa that we were just offer in the same manner. I understand that most places charge for guacamole but not only did we feel a little ripped off by the way it was offered to us but also dude $10?!?! And it wasn't even that good. Ordered the shrimp burrito and for lunch it was a reasonable portion size and price. The taste however was on the bland side. I didn't even know that something smothered in sauce with sour cream and guacamole on the side could taste bland but now I stand corrected. I'm glad that we came during lunch and didn't suffer the ridiculous prices that they charge for dinner. I don't mind paying for good food but don't try and charge me up the butt for bad food. *Service/Ambiance Service was slow and we had to ask for everything. No one came to us except for when they brought us our food and the bill. We sat outside so it was nice to eat in the fresh outdoors. The dÃ©cor outside is nice and feels a bit like you're visiting someone in his/her home which is welcoming. I hear that in the warmer months they have music outdoors while dinner is going on so that could be fun. Service might be better during dinner or indoors so that may be something to take into consideration. *Overall Treat every customer these two ways always: 1) like they are family and long time patrons and 2) like it is that first time they have ever been to your restaurant and you want to make a good impression so that they want to come back. This is really not that hard but it is not easy either. Too pricey. Bad service. Tasteless food. Rating: 1.5

I've been here many times over the years, and I'm never disappointed in the atmosphere or the service. This time, I was actually SHOCKED when I looked at the menu and noticed how expensive the lunch prices were. My group ordered a diverse array of entrees with beans and rice, not ONE person made a comment about how good their food was. Not exactly what you would expect from an almost $20 plate of food! I order my favorite, the Carne Asada Salad. I have to say, they know how to serve a salad. Greens exactly the right size, dressed perfectly with a light but super tasty balsamic vinagrette. The beef, however, was somewhat dry and by the temperature it was obvious that it had been taken from a holding dish (not grilled for me). Anywhere else, this would have been an 8.99 salad, tops. At Blue Agave, 15.99. Now, I knew the price before I ordered, and it somewhat met my expectations, so I'm not going to take stars off for that.

This was my first time to Blue Agave and we found the outdoor dining pleasant with attentive staff. Of course, it was only 5 PM and not yet busy. The Campesino margaritas ($9) were strong enough for me to want to share it with my friend instead of drinking all of it by myself. We each ordered the Enchiladas del Mar ($19) two enchiladas-one had lots of crab meat and the other was filled with shrimp. The pinkish/salmon colored sauce was delicious. A bit on the pricey side but expected for seafood. The chips with the 3 sauces along with ice water was delivered as soon as we sat down. The food arrived quickly which leads one to believe much was done in advance. We'll probably return again when in the neighborhood since the outside dining was fun.

This place was amazing. The staff treated us like we were related and were able to accommodate a 16 person party without much problem. They made awesome recommendations for margarita's (they have a book of options for margaritas they have so many) and their food menu had fantastic choices. I really recommend the tortilla soup. it totally rocked. The meal was timely and well prepared. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The place was very clean and festive.

i cant believe this place has gotten so many bad reviews. This place is ok for me. The place is really cute. I love the homey feel of it. I went there for dinner on new year's eve with my bffs. This is what we ordered: Drinks: They have a very long list of margaritas! Casa- This is highly recommended. out of the 3 drinks we ordered I liked this one the most. It was a good balance of sweet and sour from the lime. Campesino- it was a little too bitter for me, but i know a bunch of people who like it. margarita with midori and cranberry- I forgot the name of this drink but it's good if you like sweet drinks Food: They give you chips and salsa in the beginning of the meal, and that is always welcomed. I will have to say that I would like to see fresh pico de gallo. I wasn't a big fan of the salsas they gave us. I will only review the dish I got because I didn't get to try the other dishes. My friends cleaned out their plates really fast :P. I got the 100 year old recipe. it was chicken with a sour cream- based sauce. it came with rice, beans and tortilla. It was very good. It kinda reminded me of chicken tikka masala, but Mexican. The portions were perfect. It really fills you up. For dessert we got free flan, which was yummy TIP: on the front of the menu, there's s sticker that tells you to take a pic of the sticker and send it to some number. Do it. you get a text back for a coupon for free flan. Service: The service was excellent. The waiters were friendly and personable. One weird thing though: earlier that night we were trying to get our reservation from 6 to 6:30. My guy friend called in and they said that it wasn't possible and there were was no room. a few minutes later, my female friend calls and she got it moved to 6:30. I don't know what the deal was, but i just thought that was an interesting anecdote to share. Location: Parking was not hard. There's a bunch of street parking and small lots. Plus, Downtown pleasanton is such a quaint stretch. Price: It's not cheap. we knew this coming in, and we didn't mind spending a little more for New Year's Eve dinner. We spent about $25pp including tax and tip. Bottom line: This is a good place to have summer margaritas. The place is super cute, a definite date night location, or for those special dinners out.

I spent some time in Mexico and discovered that we do not get but a fraction of "real" Mexican food in California. And when I discovered Diane Kennedy's Mexican cookbooks which celebrate the diversity of Mexico's food, I truly became disenchanted with local Mexican restaurants. On the positive side, the Blue Agave has a diverse menu that is not killed by the stereotype salsas and refried beans. Their selection of sauces for the shrimp was unique. Too bad they drowned the shrimp in what would have otherwise been a very taste mole... and not the one out of the jar either. I like the ambiance-- I think the building was originally a Chart House, and it converted well into a Mexican motif without the stereotypes. The staff was not real knowledgeable about their menu and the service was okay. But for some reason, the place just didn't click with me as a regular destination. I would, as with this adventure, go again if I wanted to show someone a non-stereotyped Mexican restaurant.

So, if you have read any of my other reviews, you already know I have a thing for the Mexican food. So does my guy. Today,we decided to venture over to downtown Pleasanton (I had never been) en route to some tedious furniture shopping (my mom/grandma are coming to town soon)... Anyway, my man had been here before and remembered it being good. I read in some newspaper or magazine thing this was a good place, so I wanted to try it. This is a complete star rating-each of us (me, daughter, bf) all gave it the same rating! We arrived around 1:45pm. It is now 5:45 and though I did not over eat, I am still tasting my lunch with every burp (thanks to the diet coke in the car). Service was okay. I had the rare lunch time margarita. It was pretty good-not fantastic, but not bad. The chips and salsa were nice. The menu was okay, but I got thrown off by a couple of things: All their salads had "hard boiled egg" listed in the ingredients. WTF is a Mexican place doing serving "hard boiled eggs"? That is just wrong. I ordered the lunch version of 1 beef taco with rice and beans. Daughter ordered kids cheese enchilada ($7.00) BF ordered carne asada burrito. My taco (small) was tasty. What made me mad though was that after the very first bite, the whole thing fell apart. I wanted a taco, not a tostada. Beans were okay (black). rice had a nice flavor, but I am trying not to eat so much. The enchilada that my daughter ordered was the strangest thing any of us had ever seen. There was NO sauce! There was a ton of cheese stuffed into a tortilla and baked with more cheese on top. but had NO sauce! My daughter said it tasted like a corn quesadilla and she didn't care for it. Her beans came with queso fresco. ours with melted jack. The burrito my honey had was supposed to be "wet" with melted cheese. I don't know, maybe the place ran out of sauce. because there was no sauce and all cheese. The carne asada burrito was more like an over oily fajita burrito with bell peppers and onions and a strangely seasoned meat (cinnamon and overly so at that). He was very bummed out and only ate about half his burrito. Would I go here again, if someone else brought us. I wouldn't seek it out. The outside area was nice enough (big), but this is not enough of a draw for me to seek this place out again.

We were in Downtown Pleasanton, and me & my friend Annie were looking around a few boutiques and thought we'd give Blue Agave Club a try. My friend Annie has been there before and said it was pretty good. This is what we got: She got Tilapia- Ranchero Style. I got a Burrito filled w/ pork w/ a verde sauce. Her tilapia was pretty good. It came out fresh and hot with rice and a side salad. She said it wasn't as spicy as she wanted it but some extra salsa did the trick. My burrito wasn't as good. It was lukewarm, seemed like it was popped in the microwave or something because when I got it, it wasn't hot at all. The rice was terrible with the melted cheese at the bottom. The verde sauce wasn't what I was used to but it was okay if served hot. Service wasn't too great today either. Took them 10 minutes to get us straws? Are you serious? Water was refilled but only every once in awhile. Chips and salsa were good though. Waiters need to be more attentive of their customers, maybe customers waited a while before servers realized they needed something. $25 for lunch for 2? Not too bad, I don't think I'll try it again though. Service was poor, food quality was sub par. +1 star for the salsa and chips; probably the best part of the meal. Loving the idea of having biodegradable food containers, but a lot of their foods have sauces and are of liquid-y consistency, not too good of an idea when it starts to leak and eat up the paper container.

What we ate: Free chips and salsa - The salsa were three levels of spicy but the mild was too sweet. Shrimp Cocktail - Yummy flavor but way too sweet. Saltine crackers are not the appropriate accompaniment Green Salad Side - Basic. Once again the dressing was entirely too sweet Chicken and Rice Soup - Large was way too large. Not enough rice. Plenty of chicken and avocado. I did get a piece of cartilage in mine, but I enjoyed it. Some white people may not. When we went: Thursday afternoon at 1 PM for a late lunch. It wasn't crowded and the waiters were attentive. Especially with the water refills! The staff did a good job with service but when we paid with a $50 bill we didn't get small change back. Only a 20 and two 1's. We had to ask them to break the 20 for us otherwise there wasn't going to be any tip. Shouldn't they know this?

Very, very nice atmosphere. Beautiful patio setting. Food...Much to be desired. It was o.k. I cook better mexican food. Me thinks they're trying too hard to be different. Maybe they're trying to be 'special'. They certainly have the location and the location right. I don't really remember the service that much. I can't say that I would go back to this place. Seemed more like a place to 'be seen at' vs. a place to eat. If I had a choice, I'd rather go elsewhere. The prices are a little on the high side for the quality of food. John

I came hear for the second time, and both meals were fantastic! Beautiful Atmosphere, friendly staff, unique menu, and delicious food. I particularly loved the chips and salsa, the skirt steak, and the mole! If youre lucky, you can end your meal with authentic cafÃ© de la olla - a favorite from my many travels throughout Mexico (although they dontbalways have it).

Horrible, horrible, horrible experience here!!! Did I mention it was horrible? Ugh. We decided to venture out to downtown Pleasanton and try a new restaurant. We did a quick scout of the restaurants and chose Blue Agave based on the bustling amount of diners in their garden patio area. How could we go wrong if all these people were there right? We don't get it. How could all these people be eating there?? The service, first and foremost, was beyond inadequate, more like non-existent. The food was insipid, and for the value, not even worth it!!! Our waiter took too long to take our order. He didn't write anything down. That might explain why it took literally 47 minutes to get our food! You might be wondering why we didn't ask our server, ANY server sooner? Well, quite possibly because we couldn't ever flag our server down and everyone else was bussing chips and salsa to other tables. At one point though, our waiter did come by and ask us how the food was. WTF??? We never even got it yet! Does that paint the picture of how useless this guy was?? We finally were able to ask a bus boy (who was attentive enough to refill our drinks) if he could check on our meals or get our waiter. Attentive, yes. Follow through? NO. That tacked on another 15 minutes of waiting for our food. He never asked our waiter or gave us a status on our food. The table next to us even got their food before us, and they sat down a good 20 mins. after we ordered! UGH. You would think that when the food arrived, it would be worth the wait. I mean, why would all these other people be patronizing this lame joint right? Nope. The food is W-O-R-T-H-L-E-S-S. I had the vegetable enchiladas and hubby had the crab and shrimp enchiladas. While I was trying to get through my soggy enchiladas, hubby was busy picking out the crab shells every other bite! I felt so bad for him. He was so hungry and to now be so disappointed. He said it tasted like a Stouffer's microwaved enchilada. More UGH. Not to mention, he also ordered a "cesar salad" (that's how they spelled it) consisting of five skimpy unchopped romaine leaves laid side by side on a plate. The dressing is a "cesar-chipotle" dressing...umm...i don't know what that brown lumpy dressing was made of but it certainly didn't taste like a caesar dressing or chipotle. And for $7, how disappointed was he? What a rip off! Needless to say, neither of us finished our extremely unsatisfactory meal... and i'm using the term "meal" loosely here! So back to our imaginary waiter..donde esta senor waiter?? No esta aqui!! Let me tell you it took another 12 minutes before we got our bill...even after we asked him for it. We wanted to speak with a manager, but at this rate, we knew we weren't going to get anyone. Do yourself a HUGE favor. Stay away from this place. $50 and two words later: NEVER AGAIN....we've learned our lesson.

It is as everyone else has said in the reviews here. The outdoor seating is just perfect for a warm day or a warm evening. Great way to take in Pleasanton. We ate here on the 1st Wed of Sept, which also happens to be the only time you can walk around with a beer in you hand and the Police are ok with it. (Dwntown Pleasanton's Street Faire) Chips are Salsa were decent but not great. I think its important to define Mexican food before you review this place. Its not going to be like a taqueria, it tries to be a little above that. Using ingredients that try to give more "elite" status and also to justify the higher prices. The result is mixed. Many times the food has not come across as "better" it just comes across as being "different." The kitchen has to be able to deliver the food to the table at a higher temperature. I have to mention that they do have LOTS of Margarita's. The prices appeared to be about $5 to $8 per 9oz glass with ice. The service seemed ok. Its not a bunch of young students serving, they hire from the Hispanic community nearby. This means the service is generally ok with small groups but as the place gets busier and with larger groups, they start becoming more negligent. It is not acceptable considering the menu prices. Be comfortable making EYE contact with the waiter and asking for what you need.

I've always loved this place. The food can be a little bit pricey, but I've always had a great experience here. I always have the fish and they do it pretty darn well. I love their enchiladas as well, and their margaritas are awesome. I like the atmosphere and the servers are always very friendly and attentive. My best friend even had her rehearsal dinner here with her like 80 guests and they had a great space in the back that accommodated us all really well. It was super cute and even had it's own bar. I always enjoy this place and can't complain.

My boyfriend and I were walking in downtown Pleasanton, and chose this place because it was beautifully decorated, had great outdoor seating, and we saw the sign for their "award winning" chicken tortilla soup. We sat down and were given our chips and salsa pretty quickly. We looked over the menu, which actually did not have a huge variety. It took a VERY long time for our waiter to come take our order, which is part of the reason why I gave this place 3 stars. I ordered the burrito and my boyfriend ordered the cheese enchiladas and of course the "award winning" soup. The soup does not taste award winning at all! It was watery and barely had any chicken in it. Not award winning in our book. The food took awhile to come out and when it did we were already out of salsa, but the waiter never offered to fill it back up. We started eating our food and the taste was pretty bland. The waiter also never came over to check in on us, which I think is rude. Overall, this place was just ok and not worth the $15-$20 per plate.

I either really like a place or not at all. So it seems that I either give places a 1 or a 4 (5 is only for high end restaurants in my book). I give this a 4. I was pleasantly surprised by the ambiance here. We were there for lunch so we ended sitting outside on the patio. I could really see myself sitting on that patio enjoying some of their tequila's on a warm summer evening. Too bad I live in San Jose... :-( Service was good. Not great but good. The Tequila menu looked awesome. Unfortunately it was a business lunch so I couldn't partake... I feel like a broken record but the salad that I had was excellent. 2 of my other table mates had a salad as well and were very happy with theirs. One of our other table mates had the Quesedilla which she said was excellent. The patio is great if you have kids too as it is huge and you can let them run around without bothering other customers. I will go back with my family someday.

Blue Agave was once our favorite places (5 Stars), not just Mexican. The last couple of times, we have found it short of it's previous quality. Staff was friendly and prompt with their service, however the quality of the food has dropped quite a bit. Not sure if it is change in ownership or the chef, but the distinct favors of the dishes now are muted much like a low quality Mexican restaurant. Not terrible, but not very good any more. Sorry to express our disappointment as we have recommended this restaurant to many but can't do it in the future.

Great patio. If the weather is nice, grab a table outside, order a margarita and a few appetizers, and relax. I can't speak for the main menu, but the starters were great and more than enough food for us. After all, how can you go wrong with a big plate of melted cheese and some warm tortillas. I could live off of that alone. Service is kind of relaxed as well so don't expect anyone running around. Great for a Saturday afternoon outside.

Great margaritas! Not too sweet and you can actually taste the tequila unlike some other mexican places. Vast selection of tequilas which is the theme (Blue Agave). Lunch was with my Wife, Mom and Dad. Dad had the Carne Asada, the rest of us had the Carnitas which was VERY good. Great ambiance food is good but a bit pricey. I will visit again.

Don't know if it was just one of those days... but the staff was a bit off their game. Our table was outside, covered and shaded. It was a nice day so it made for a nice garden atmosphere. We didn't have place settings, no napkins, or utensils witch should have been there when we were seated or with your meal arrival. The order was wrong for my friend, she asked for no red sauce and got red sauce. It wasn't busy at this time only two other tables besides us. Tried this place twice and was unimpressed both times. I won't be going back. The food was, at best, mediocre. It's also really expensive. The wait staff(well, the waiter we had both times) is slower than glacial ice movement. All in all a pretty meh meal. The location is nice though and the out front patio area is huge.

The Blue Agave Club features the "Alta Cocina" inspired food from chef Alejandro Garcia, a native from Mexico who started by opening Fiesta Del Mar in Mountain View about 25 years ago. The menu is largely based on interesting exotic mexican specialties with a nod to the Aztecs via California style. The requisite chips come with 3 different salsas, all very tasty yet lacking the interest and depth I would expect after looking over the eclectic menu. Since the bar boasts over 200 types of tequilas I half expected to see some interplay of tequila in the food or the salsas. The margarita list is extensive, with inviting combinations of high end tequilas mixed with triple sec, cointreau and other liquors. I would have loved to get more information on what I was drinking, but I felt the server was ill prepared to do more than bring the margarita - which already had the tequila in it. Honestly, for a 12 dollar margarita with such a premium tequila I would have liked to have seen the bottle, and perhaps had the shot added to the drink at the table. Such a great variety of tequilas begs for a more informative and interactive experience. The menu has some "very difficult to pronouce" Azteca inspired offerings but they are described brilliantly. I ordered the Dobladas de Cuitlacoche (Corn Tortillas with a Corn Truffle Sauce) which piqued my interest since I had heard of corn truffles (cuitlacoche) but never tried them. I felt that while the cuitlacoche was supposed to be highlighted, the dish was too much awash in a sea of cheese and ajillo sauce - the flavors did not compliment each other well. My wife ordered the Plato Huitzilopoxtli, a combination of Asado, Mole Enchilada and a Relleno. The steak was excellent, while the enchilada and relleno were somewhat boring and lacking in depth that one would expect. My expectations were pretty high going in and I was a bit underwhelmed by the lack of boldness to the flavor of the food and the somewhat mechanical service. I would like to see more attention to detail around making the tequila a star, as there could be a real niche for them there. I'll probably go back for lunch as it comes a bit closer to what I would expect for a lunch experience, but other dinner options will likely win me over here.

This is priced like a high-end eatery, but the food is only above average Mexican. If you're going to do chips and salsa at these prices, you need to make them a little tastier than Chipotle. Update August 2011: Had lunch on the patio here. I really enjoyed the steak salad; not too heavy and the ingredients were fresh. However, the service was awful. It wasn't that busy and everything took forever. If you want business diners for lunch, you need to be a little snappier with the service.

It was October when I visited for the first time - wonderful weather for sitting outside. The service was prompt and friendly. The drinks/cocktails were smooth and a little strong (we weren't complaining). The menu offers a wide selection of authentic, flavorful food. The presentation is very appealing, and both my date and I loved the flavors that came alive on the plate. Two thumbs up -- an excellent place for dining with friends or for that first, second or third date.

Now this is what I want in a restaurant. Right on the downtown street. Awesome patio and amazing staff and service. The tequila collection is enormous. The margaritas are excellent! Ask for David or Hector. They make awesome drinks. The chef and the team is good but can be more innovative and change dishes more with the season. The dishes are good! I wish we had this restaurant in Oakland. I know we've got Dona Tomas and Tamarindo, but I haven't found a good, upscale Mexican place like Tia Maria used to be back in the day. A place with good margheritas and delicious American Mexican food. Actually, I haven't had a drink at Blue Agave, but their two page list of margheritas makes me suspect it would be good. And the food is great. Tostada's, enchiladas, Juevos Rancheros--all great. I had a Carne Asada salad once that was good, though I think they forgot to mix the dressing up--it was all balsamic. Service can be a little slow. Water isfull most of the time. My step mom had iced tea once and they kept that full as well. I'll leave it at four stars until I get my margherita then we'll see.

We've been here twice in the past few months. Once to the tequila bar in the back and then once for dinner. Both visits were good ones. The tequila selection in the bar is amazing. The bartender was awesome about making recommendations based on what we were looking for. If you enjoy tequila, sneak into the super small bar in the back. You won't be disappointed. For our dinner visit, we went with a friend and my two children. Our bill was actually less than $100 if you can believe it. And the food was quite good with generous servings. I don't think any of us actually finished what we were served and not because the food wasn't good. Our server was wonderful and I really appreciated the way he interacted with my daughters. I'm sort of a stickler about having them order for themselves and having them make their requests to our servers and our server treated them as if they were adults and was very attentive. They were super busy, but never did our server seem rushed. Definitely somewhere we'll go again.

We used to come here pretty often and the food was decent. A little pricey, but I really liked the seasonal stuffed pepper it was what I waited for every fall. The last time we went, not only were they out of the pepper, but what I did order was awful. My husbands dish was no better. I hope they will read my review and find a new chef. Sorry guys, I really want to like you. I do like the Horny margarita :)

Mothers Day brunch. Atmosphere was awesome. Service for a brunch buffet was good. Food was fresh. My biggest issue was price. For $30 a person I was expecting more. Compared to Farmers and Dublin Ranch country club charged a lot less and you received more options. What Blue Agava served I could have ordered the same food across the street for $20 less per person. Also if you are going to serve brunch learn how to make a Bloody Mary. Love the setting but won't return. Cost me $300 for 6 adults, one senior, one child....for pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon, salad, fresh fruit, beans, enchiladas .

To start they have a large outside eating area in the front that is much needed, needless to say. I've many, many margaritas in my lifetime. I mean who has not. Blue Agave is the best that I have ever had and you tell that there are fresh ingredients by the color. It's not neon green or close, it looks like fresh squeezed key lime or lime juice. They do a great job or rimming my glass with salt. Other places you may get the enough salt but not a full rim. That's importante!! I had the ceasar with chicken, which I could not finish. There was so much chicken that I loved, but I just couldn't do it. The dressing was very light which is nice. I mean how many over-dressed Caesars have you had?? A lot. The service was great, everyone was very attentive and on point. My ice water stayed full, without it I thought that I would disintegrate out there. On the inside It's a house converted into a restaurant which I always think is brilliant. Cute as heck, bomb tequila selection, fans, clean restroom and just down right cool. I was only in town for a night but I will consider coming out again just to stroll the downtown area and indulge in Blue Agave. Try it!!

Blue Agave is a nice place for lunch when it's warm. They have a large patio that sits in front of the restaurant. The restaurant itself is a huge Victorian that serves as the kitchen and indoor dining room. This place is supposed to be known for their margaritas, since they have an assortment of tequila. Sadly, I did not get the chance to try a refreshing beverage. What I liked about Blue Agave is their location and atmosphere. I also liked how they have three different types of salsa for you to enjoy with your chips. I was fortunate to try their shrimp cocktail, it was one of the best I've had. I had their 2 item combo which was a chicken enchilada and a crispy beef taco. The taco was good, although on a petite side. The enchilada was nothing to write home about. The black beans were very tasty and I would say it was the best black beans I've had in a long time. The rice was not extraordinary. The burritos don't resemble a burrito at all. It basically looked like an enchilada with the rice on the beans served on the outside. The price was a bit on the higher side. A two item combo runs about $12 and the burritos are about $10. I would come back to try other items on their menu but if you are looking for some quick, and inexpensive mexican food, you might look elsewhere.

Was lured into this place with a local coupon that came in the mail. I should have known better. Considering the calabre of Mexican food we have in No. Cal this place falls way short. The only redeeming quality is the cute house with outside seating. Otherwise the food is WAY overpriced. The 24$ burrito was just bad, the pork was tough, little heat... just bad... all the other plates we had just were not good especially for the price. The Margarita's? whatever they were really bad and again overpriced. We will never revisit this place.

Outdoor evening dining is rarely possible in my area even during summer. Around 3 or 4 PM the ocean breeze starts picking up and by dinner time it is too cool and windy to enjoy eating outdoors. This is a shame because there are few things I enjoy as much as dining outdoors when the weather is nice. Awhile back, however, I discovered that it takes only about 30 minutes from my house to downtown Pleasanton where it is often just the right temperature for eating outdoors with little wind in the evening during Spring, Summer, and Fall. Not only that, but it is a scenic and pleasant drive through Niles Canyon and the Pleasonton Sunol Road, completely bypassing the 680 Freeway. The old town area of Pleasanton, by the way, is quaint, bordering on charming, with many little restaurants, several with outdoor dinning, and various shops including a SouthWest/Indian store and a "cowboy" store or two: the Wild West for yuppies, or in my case, odppie (old downwardly-mobile professional). My favorite restaurant in old-town Pleasanton is Blue Agave. It has a large outdoor dining area in front, along the side, and for big groups, in the back. Live music is usually playing. At night it is a rather romantic setting. The restaurant has a large tequila selection. I tend to be pretty relaxed by the time our order is taken and the food starts arriving. (I nominate a designated driver and give them my car keys first. No really, I do.) I've eaten most of the items on the dinner menu and I haven't hit a bad selection yet. The first dish I order whenever I go to a new Mexican dish is Mole Poblano which is chicken smothered in a rich dark sauce which includes dried chiles, seeds, nuts, and unsweetened chocolate. I've made the mole poblano sauce from scratch in the past, so I have some sense of what it takes to make it right. It is quite a bit of effort. Blue Agave tastes good, in my opinion. I'd like to think they also make it from scratch but after complimenting another Mexican restaurant chef, he told me his came from a jar. Oh well, so much for my expertise on the subject. I prefer it when the chicken isn't boned, as Blue Agave's is, as the chicken is juicier and more flavorful. It is a bit messy to eat that way, though. Blue Agave's signature dish is Camarones Xochitl which they proudly proclaim as the "Best Dish on the Menu, Named by Diablo Magazine's 2002 Food Awards". This is shrimp sauted in garlic, green onion with a corn truffle sauce. It is extremely good and is usually what my girlfriend gets whenever we are there. If I'm really hungry and conflicted on what to choose, I get the Plato Huitzilopoxtli, which includes grilled skirt steak, mole enchilada, fresh roasted chile relleno, and guacamole. My real favorite, however, is one of the steak dishes. I flip a coin between either the Herb marinated New York steak served with creamy mushroom sauce and topped with a spicy red sauce, garnished with cotija cheese plus a shot of house Tequila (as if I haven't had enough by this time), or if I'm not quite so hungry the 8-ounce filet mignon, in spicy tomatillo & chilpotle sauce. Both dishes are served with papas poblanas and cabbage salad and both are wonderful. I've taken a number of friends to Blue Agave. They all rave about it and most have gone back several times since. I give this restaurant three and a half stars for the very good food and service plus another half star for the pleasant outdoor dining and live music.

I can't believe the rating isn't higher for this place, this is some of the best Mexican food I've had. Only occasionally am I in this area, but whenever I'm anywhere close, I make an effort to go here. I love the atmosphere, reminded me of dining in the South where you feel like you in someone's house. Upscale service, efficient, friendly and really feels like you're having a nice meals. Margs would good, loved the queso and I had a massive burrito with sauce and cheese on top and it was delish. Everyone I was with loved their food. I've never been here in nice weather so haven't been able to eat outside, but it's located on the main street which is really cute. The prices are high for Mexican food but you get quality from service to food.

This place doesn't remind me of an authentic mexican place but more so of a chain with a nice atmosphere that you don't normally get in a restaurant like Chevy's. I have been here a total of 4 times and each occurrence has been the same outcome. The food is always mediocre, not good but not mad. The bill ranges from 60-120 for 2 people depending on how sauced you get and the service is "okay". If you want a place where you can get a good margarita and sit outside on a nice day or night. This is the place to come. If you want good authentic mexican food go somewhere else.

There are many, many worse things than sitting out in the patio with your girl on a summerlike spring day in Pleasanton just after a car show and eating good Mexican food with live music. Many, many worse things, to understate a little. You get a very Mexican/Spanish feel here of sitting out in the sun, watching the world go by, and sipping on a beer while the light slowly fades. The veggie burrito was tasty, the music relaxing, and the atmosphere was right on. If you're out in these parts, which I'm usually not, stop by, sit out, and watch the people go by. Nothing better to do on a Sunday afternoon in Pleasanton!

Overall the food is alright for the price, the ambiance is worth the price though. We thought the staff was friendly and helpful. The margarita selection is terrific and overall would come here again for a margarita and chips with salsa on the patio.

I've been eating here since 2005 and the food is consistently good but not great. I dined here last night and sat on the porch for the first time. Despite the really hot weather, the porch was shady and cool--the ceiling fan was a big plus. I had the Tortilla soup. It was excellent--one of the best items on the menu. I also had the crab and shrimp Enchiladas. The shrimp ones were better than the crab ones. Crab is too bland and dry for the cream sauce. Service is typical of East Bay restaurants--friendly but not at the level of professional service like in San Francisco.

we spent the afternoon walking around downtown pleasanton after attending the hawaiian may day festival... this restaurant had an appealing outside and my stepdad thought that it would be cool to hang out and have a margarita... they seated us right away and even put two tables together without any grumbling to accomodate our party... we ordered the house margarita which was decent... even a little on the strong side... for appetizers we ordered calamari which was good- not chewy at all... my little brother didn't like the tentacles that came with it though, so he threw them on my plate... we also ordered scallops that came with a green sauce... good shrimp that the waiter recommended... good and a cheese fondue that came with corn tortillas... good... i even added my own spin to the dish and added the green sauce that came from the scallops to it... service was attentive and as it got nearer to dinner time, the patio grew more crowded... defintely would recommend for drinks and appetizers...

Ehhhhhhh ...... I love the way this place looks. The chairs alone are amazing. I wish I could decorate my place with stuff that artsy and colorful. If only the food was on par with the atmosphere. It's different than your typical Mexican restaurant, which can make a nice change. A bit more upscale, but also a bit more pricey. Be prepared to drop more than $8.95 for your meal. I got the taco plate and asked if they had a fish taco, but they only do shrimp or crab. Apparently they don't have fish?? I was perplexed because I thought the menu said fish, but maybe I was just distracted by the hot sun beating down on my back from the window. So I thought I'd try the crab taco for something new. The rice and beans were delish, the crab taco not really that impressive. I basically never leave food on my plate (because I'm a pig) and I left about 1/3 of the taco. The chips were pretty good and were served with three kinds of salsa, but I really only liked one of the salsas OK. But I guess one is enough. This was my third time to the Blue Agave, and it had been probably six years or so since I'd gone before. We arrived kind of late for lunch on a weekday ... probably about 1:45 or so and it kinda seemed like they were closing up already but then they sat us. I wasn't sure if they were too happy to get another table, but the service was actually pretty attentive nonetheless. If you want to try this place but don't want to totally empty your wallet on Mexican food, go for lunch, but even then expect it to be a bit more than you're used to paying (or at least more that I'm used to paying you rich bastards, you).

The food is very good. They bring you 3 different salsas for an appetizer with chips. We ordered the guacamole which was delicious. Enchiladas were good. I had a salad with coconut shrimp. The shrimp were great, I was afraid to eat the scallops because they didn't look cooked. Cant rate them if you didn't have the guts to eat them, right? Ambiance was sooooo perfect. Outdoor dining with live music. It doesn't get much better than that.

This place has one of my favorite dishes in the entire world. I crave it daily. The menu is unlike any typical mexican restaurant. This place offers high-quality cuisine in a great atmosphere. If you want the best chicken in the world, order the "Enjococado 100-yr old family recipe" with corn tortillas. I am not kidding, once you eat this dish, you will crave it just like me. I do not EVER order chicken at restaurants but this is an exception. Like everyone else said, this place gets packed during the summer months because of their large outdoor patio seating. They also have heaters to keep patrons warm at night. The wait staff/host is super nice! We have always been treated with respect there and in fact the host sent us home with an entire bottle of their home made margarita mix for free!

Very large portions so appetizers were not necessary. The chips and salsa before dinner were good. One of the salsa's struck me as out of an old el paso box. This place is nice when it's warm outside...since the best seating is outside on the patio. When I went there was a live band outside as well...so that made it even better. The restaurant is located in downtown Pleasanton which has a nice atmosphere and friendly crowds. Parking is kind of a pain since it is located downtown. This place is good for kids, groups or a date.

I don't know why but my expectations were low before eating here. I must say I was pleasantly surprised by the enormous selection of Tequilas as well as the different take on Mexican food. Went on a Thursday so it was fairly empty, which is a shame. I think maybe the high(er) prices may sway people to head down the road a little to Albertos, but if you're looking for a really good chicken mole, or flat iron steak, and a quaint atmosphere, don't pass this place up. Wouldn't mind going on a weekend afternoon when seating outside is possible and ordering a Buffalo burger.

I think the location and decor are what really stand out for this place. Otherwise, I can't say I was actually impressed by the food itself. Anytime I walk into a "Mexican" restaurant for the first time, I almost always order the burrito. This, I believe (aside from the chips and salsa) is one of the best ways to judge a place. A burrito contains (or should) nearly every ingredient they have available. This burrito, sadly, contained some sort of strange cinnamon-like fajita style innards that totally ruined what my stomach was hoping for. I think if you serve a non-traditional dish, make sure you state it clearly on the menu. My mouth was sad.

Well we never really did get to dine here but I thought it was interesting as we stopped in last Friday night about 10 mins prior to their actual opening. About 8-9 people were just completing the placement of the tableware. At any rate the young hostess let us know they weren't open yet and would in 10 mins. She was not pleasant about this but rather behaved as if we were intruders. We dined at Albertos down the street instead and it was fabulous. I guess I'm writing the review because of how rude the hostess was. It would have been good business for them to direct us to the bar for chips and a margarita to wait the 10 mins until they were open. Funny how young people have no clue how to be courteous.

The chips and salsa are the best, however the rest of the food is ok, but a little overpriced. I also had a side Caesar salad, which consisted of 8small romaine leaves, 2 cherry tomatoes and 3 croutons. No cheese or anchovies, and very little dressing (not good anyway) all for $7.95, which was only worth a nickel at best. The rest of the food was so so, not very favor ful or tasteful.

I agree, don't waste your money here! Terrible service! Very very slow, and the waiter was the touchy-feely type- so unprofessional! FYI- you're job is to take my order and deliver my food, in a prompt and friendly manner... NOT to feel me up and take 45 minutes to bring my meal! The food was good, but the service was so lame, I will not be going back! It's sooo overpriced too. I don't understand why they are charging as if it were in a 4 star hotel... we were seated next to a table full of obnoxious kids, so there's really no "ambiance" to speak of. What a waste!

My boss took me there for lunch yesterday. It was very nice outside so that is where we sat. Service was VERY good. Water always refilled and food promptly served and hot. Chips - OK, but kinda bland. There are three different salsas at the they brought. Each ofthem were very good and tasted fresh. Compensated for the bland chips. (I shoudla salted them) Guacamole - Good and fresh...and more chips! Whoo Hoo!! I had the Chili Rellano. No egg based batter "breading" like place makes them. Just a good pablano pepper with the filling on top and red or green sauce. I chose the red. It wass fresh and light. Loved the black beans. Spanish Rice was just OK. (Add one of the salsa they provide for the chips. Nummy Nummy. My boss had the Diablo Shrimp. 4 big prawns wre on his plate. Apparently he always get those when he goes there. I can see why. His only negative comment was that they usually server him 5 prawns. I'd like to know the backstory on that on. Who gets 4 and who gets 5? All in all, I like it!

wow...where to start... my boyfriend and i went here for dinner, it was about 8pm, and sat outside which is nice. that was actually the only good part. so dont let its cute appearance fool you, the food and service is terrible. the busboy was quite helpful, kept refilling our waters, but the server was non existant, didnt even ask us how our food was, which may be a good thing since it was terrible. the salsa was the best part. after that we shared calamari rings, which usually are great at restaurants, but they were chewy tasteless and cold. then my bf got the seafood enchiladas which were gross, with canned crab i am sure. it had a really odd sauce on top. i got the burrito, you would think i would be safe right? nope, tasted like meatloaf with vegetables wrapped in a burrito shell. gross. wont ever go back, if i want mexican in downtown, i will stick to Alberto's or hi tech burrito!

We took another couple out for a lovely dinner here. Patio seating, nice live music, fabulous service, and our food was wonderful. We had chicken enjococoje which was melt on your mouth fab, the trinity enchiladas - who knew you could make enchiladas with a corn truffle sauce, and a variety plate with a mole enchilada and steak. All were delicious. There are frequently coupons for this place - we got $10 off and that brought the price to quite reasonable. Try them out!

Celebrated a birthday party at the Blue Agave Club. This is an upmarket Mexican restaurant which is evident in the price but not the food. The service was superb. The staff [all of them] were extremely friendly and efficient and attentive and they got everything right. The menu is very limiting and is very different to the usual Mexican menu's, which in fact makes it more appealing. However, the prices are simply outrageous and although I am OK with "expensive" there is simply no value here. The food was good - everyone in the party was satisfied and enjoyed the food but the dishes are exorbitantly expensive. They have a massive Margarita and tequila selection but be prepared to pay $12 for a Margarita. The restaurant itself [decor] is very pleasant but nothing spectacular and not in line with the prices. Our bill averaged around $60 per person which included a salad and a Margarita and one bottle of wine and coffee.

High-quality Mexican cuisine. More traditionally Mexican (and more up-scale) than most of the Americanized places around here. Delicious. The patio is magnificent on a warm summer evening. The staff is reasonably attentive, and especially friendly toward our kids. Despite the fairly high-end nature of the restaurant (relative to most Mexican restaurants), Blue Agave is quite family friendly.

I haven't come across too many Mexican restaurants that even aim for offering high-quality cuisine. Blue Agave Club does and hits the mark. The menu is unlike any typical Mexican restaurant I usually see - while I love Mexican food or what has been passed as Mexican food to me, the typical menu doesn't lend itself to having Mexican food considered quality food or something to consider for special occasions. Blue Agave Club has a menu and liquor list that should be considered for a night of good food and drink (the restaurant has a very extensive and impressive tequila list covering a wide variety of quality and prices). Even the chips and salsas they brought out when we sat down were not ordinary. The salsas were all delicious - only one really hinted at a salsa you'd get at a typical Mexican restaurant. The other two were very different and excellent. I started my meal with an excellent soup - what it exactly was escapes me now. My main course was what they tout as "the best dish on the menu" (actually, it was deemed as such by Diablo Magazine for its 2002 food awards), the Camarones Xochitl. I enjoyed both the soup and the meal very much.

Interesting to see Blue Agave getting so beat up in the ratings....but it seems they are losing out based upon their prices and their food assortment. In order to best enjoy Blue Agave..go into the experience thinking you will be trying something new....possibly the mole sauce will actually have some cacao overtones (versus the over milled Chevy's version...), or the poblano pepper will be so tenderly sauteed that some spice stills kicks down on the back of your tongue. DO NOT go to Blue Agave if you are thinking you want some cheap Mexi-Mix deluxe plate...you won't like this place. If you are interested in enjoying some delectable sangria in the early evening twilight hours, followed by a bowl of fresh tortilla soup and splitting an entree with a fellow diner....whilst people watching the strollers of Main Street....this is your place!!!! The service is attentive, kind to children (but definitely try this place for a date night adventure too!), has an extensive tequila list and unique dishes that encourage sharing. I will admit, they do lean on the steep side for prices in the Tri-Valley (thus the loss of one star) ...but like I mention above...encourages sharing...and who doesn't want a bit more of that in their life??

I tried to give ti 2 stars but I really coundnt think of a reason. After some shopping @ Fleet Feet (great place - 5 stars) my wife and I checked out some of the cool eateries on Main St there and decided on this busy Mexican place. The wait for the patio was 45 mins so we took a table inside. I am a former server with reasonable expectations, but I also know when you just arent good at your job. Service started out mediocre and never really recovered and the food was just not good. Our waiter took our order after a slightly long wait (long enough to say 'where is our server?') and never came back to our table. Thankfully the bus staff and the server that had the table next to us was on the ball. My enchiladas and my wifes burrito were pretty bland. Nothing good to say really. Save your money - this place was disappointing.

I'm a huge fan of Fiesta Del Mar Too in downtown Mountain View, and once I heard they had a sister restaurant, decided that I had to try the Blue Agave Club in Pleasanton. I liked the atmosphere of this place located on Main Street in the heart of downtown. They have what seemed to be all outdoor seating (we weren't asked if we wanted inside or outside...so I don't know.) If it gets cold they've got plenty of heaters placed around the tables. Don't expect a whole lot of "traditional" Mexican faire - like burritos, tacos, etc - this place adds a Mexican influence on many American dishes, such as chicken and steak. Their shrimp cocktail ($12) is outstanding - packed full of shrimp and topped with avocado. Crab & shrimp enchiladas were delicious - ask for them mixed. The ensalada del mar was fresh and tasty. Overall, food was ok and portions are reasonable. But wow, drinks are pricy...a pitcher of house margarita was $22.00. Overall, it was an enjoyable dinner. Would definitely come here again.

We had my husbands birthday party for 50 people in the back patio. The service, food and ambiance is amazing and the margaritas are simply the best! Kudos to Susie and Julio for creating the birthday party I envisioned. Everything was so perfect and their choice of buffet was the best. Take the advice of the experts because they really know what works for planning a dinner party of this size. Thanks again to everyone at Blue Agave.....can't wait to plan the next event at your restaurant!

I had lunch here last sunday for the first time. The atmosphere was great and I loved dining on their patio in the summertime. The complimentary chips and salsas were great. The chips were just thick enough and salsas all had a good amount of heat. (don't you hate being served salsa that is barely spicier than marinara sauce?) I asked the waiter to recommend a margarita that wasn't too strong. I don't remember the name of the one he chose for me, but after two sips i could definitely feel the buzz. My husband tasted it and agreed that it was one of the stronger margaritas that he's tried. I ordered one of the house specialty dishes which is basically jumbo shrimps cooked in different ways, accompanied with rice and black beans. Mine was cooked in garlic, olive oil, and some kind of saffron corn mixture. I'm not a huge fan of shrimp in general, but this dish was awesome :) My husband was surprised I ate every last bite. He himself ordered the carnitas which he felt were very good, but not amazing. The waiters were very friendly and attentive when we arrived. The chips/salsa & drinks were brought out immediately and our dishes arrived pretty quickly. However, I felt that we did sit around for a while after it was obvious that we had finished eating. We finally had to get someone's attention to get our bill. Then again, it was a sunday afternoon and the place was pretty busy.

The food was okay, but so overpriced. Good margarita, though. $90 for 2 of us to eat a burrito and mole chicken. Ridiculous. Service was extremely slow and it took about 15 mins from when we asked the waiter for our check to actually get it. Worst of all was the karaoke musician they have singing there. Horrid late 60s/early 70s music, he couldn't hit the high notes so he minored out all his chords to change tunes, and he could not sing. It was torture. Next time we want a fun Mexican place near home with a good cocktail we'll go down the street. Really - the musician was horrid. And it was embarassing.

Cocina Mexicana Asombrosa: If you're in the East Bay on a warm summer's evening and are looking for amazing Mexican food in a great atmosphere, then you must visit Blue Agave in Pleasanton. Try the Queso Fondido (cheese fondue) to start. The Camarones Emperador and Xochit are wonderful, and my husband swears by the burrito. An extensive margarita menu and great outdoor patio atmosphere with friendly wait staff and live music doesn't hurt either. And the desserts - I'm not one to rave about Mexican restaurant desserts, but the bananas foster and flan at Blue Agave are worth saving a little room for.

So for years I was never a big fan of this place. I thought it was over priced and nothing special. Well, a couple of weeks ago I changed my opinion. My boyfriend and I were walking around downtown Pleasanton when we decided we'd like to have a drink and an appetizer. We decided on Blue Agave because it was a nice day and we wanted to sit outside. I had never sat outside there and boy was I missing out. What a beautiful quaint patio they have. Our server was awesome helping us pick Margarita's and tequila. I have never seen such a large listing of tequilas. We had an appetizer of tostada's and it was great. The drinks were great, good was great, service was great, and atmosphere was fantastic. Who could ask for more. We will be back this summer!

There is nothing good about this restaurant except that it has a nice outdoor patio to grab some drinks and to snack on some chips and sausa. Thats if you don't mind over fryed tortilla chips. If you like Tequila they do have a great collection to choose from. Our waiter was poor, unhelpful and spoke very little english. The dinner menu does not offer your traditional mexican food. We "settled" for the shrimp and crab enchiladas. How does the plate come out hot but the food be luke warm ? The enchiladas had a weird bisque sauce on them. Not very good at all. The crab enchilada was tastless, however shrimp enchilada was a little better. They give you are small portion of black beans and the spanish rice is not very good. Lastly, this place is way overpriced.

Pretty decent place. I heard they just reopened after a remodel so the lunch hour wasn't too busy and so service was good. I ordered the Suiza Enchiladas with green sauce which was nothing special. I actually asked for one chicken and one cheese but both came out chicken. Overall, it didn't blow my socks off but if I needed another Mexican place downtown, I guess I would come back.

While we do eat here frequently I am not a huge fan of the food but love the atmosphere so it gets 3 stars. I would give this place 5 stars if they had the same menu as Fiesta del Mar in Mountain View (in fact I think a lot more people would rate this higher). Pros: Good margaritas, they are nice to kids, once they know you they are always nice, tortilla soup is great. Cons: Food selection and no ability to substitute. Sometimes I just want a chicken burrito, not something fancy, and they cannot accomodate this. Menu is pretty limited and overpriced but I love the outdoor patio.

From the street you will never think that this is a mexican restaurant and that's a good point for me ! i'm not a lot into the mariachi style decoration. The architecture of the house and the decoration is really nice more caribean style that mexican. The nice thing is that you can have outdoor diner or lunch when the weather is nice ! This is a great showcase place if relatives are in town The building is a funky victorian-ish house with vibrant colors of south of the borders painted through out each room. Lots and lots of tequilla.... Outdoor seating with whimsical metal sculptures. Heat lamps in the event of chilliness. Mexican couture cookery happening here. It is reminiscent of high end Mexico City. The style of food is a fusion of Mexican flavor with Artistic license. Presentation is beautiful, service cordial. A bit pricey for an every day hang out ( although the multiple paged tequilla menu would warrant frequent visits) The caldo was wonderful, as was the poblano and house special chicken. It is not a provincial Mexican restaurant, but a high end gourmet . If the place is packed the service could be understandably sparse.

Me and about 13 of my friends had reservations at the Blue Agave last night to celebrate a friends bachelorette party. My friend H who made the reservations said that she must have communicated with the manager half a dozen times or more concerning the time of the reservation. Once we arrived at the restaurant, we had to practially beg for water. Then we had to beg for menus which is when we were told, "Well the rest of your party isn't here yet." So we're not allowed to have menus if our whole party isn't here? So they brought us an appetizer menu and a cocktail menu. But still no dinner menu which we had to AGAIN specifically request. We had to ask multiple times for water. At least a dozen times for chips and salsa. Getting a refill on a soda or water was almost impossible. We finally ordered and got our food and we were all relativly satisfied with our meals. The taste was good, but after the terrible service no one was that impressed. To top it all off, we were sitting underneath the orange tree (which smelled heavenly, I must say) and one of the oranges (the size of a softball) fell from the tree and almost hit one of our friends on the head. Amazingly enough, this one friend did not order any food. If she had a plate of food in front of her it would have splattered all over her outfit and ruined her evening. They did apologize but they didn't seem to think it was that big of a deal. For the amount of money we spent last night we should have been treated much better. The service should have been more expedient and our waiter should have been more attentive. All in all, I may go back to Blue Agave because the food really was pretty good, but never with a large group. They just can't seem to handle more than a table of 4.

Location, location, location!! I think this is the best spot in downtown P town. Not to say the food is bad, I really love their flautas, and 3 types of salsa, and they definitely use good ingredients. Very good staff, always prompt and nice. Not as pricey as some say (maybe I am willing to pay a bit more for quality), but not in the low end. One of my go-to lunch spots.

I am giving this three stars because it was extremely comfortable to sit outside and enjoy the evening. Also, even though this is on the Main Street of Pleasanton, you really don't notice too many cars go by. Very pleasant atmosphere. The service was excellent, and I'm sure that they have great margaritas - about three pages of them, but if you want to order wine, very, very limited. But I shouldn't complain. The food was ok. A very mixed review, I know. I would go back, though, to enjoy the outside dining again. And the service was excellent.

In the past Blue Agave had a beautiful outdoor seating with elegant white table cloths over eclectic blue tables. Now they have ugly cheap looking brown tables that have completely changed the look of the outdoor area. Instead of a beautiful and elegant courtyard setting, it now looks more like seating for a casual deli or beer garden. I think if you are going for the upscale Mexican restaurant atmosphere and charging $24.00 (typical entree price) for an entree, you should have table cloths and an upscale seating area to match the upscale pricing. Even though the ambiance is not nearly as nice as it once was, my husband and I go often because the food is still excellent. The three salsas they give you with chips when you are seated are all excellent. The huge menu of margaritas makes it fun even for regulars like us, because there are so many margaritas on the menu that we can try a new one every time if we want. The guacamole is fresh and the touch of sour cream and tomato on the side is a nice touch. The caesar salad has just the right amount of tang to make it more than your average caesar salad. The shrimp dishes are all delicious, and I have trouble deciding which one I want. Although I usually choose "the best dish of the house" and my husband usually chooses the "shrimp with diablo sauce" The mole is also delicious and their chile relleno is the best I've ever had anywhere! The salmon is also delicious and my daughter who doesn't care for fish likes the salmon here. The shirt steak is seasoned perfectly as is almost everything on the menu. The only thing that I've ever ordered that I didn't care for were the enchiladas del mar and that might just be because I typically don't care for rich white sauces and not because there is anything wrong with the dish. Even though it has lost its look of elegance, you can still get wonderful food at Blue Agave!

The prices seem a bit higher but I think its because of the downtown location. We got the chicken mole and buffalo burger which were both tasty. The service was good, we sat outside and enjoyed the nice evening. When it got cool they turned on the heat lamps. I think the best thing about this place is the location and atmosphere with pretty good (maybe not great) food.

Flat out disappointinggg! You pay for the ambiance I guess, because I had to throw down 15 dollars for a burrito consisting of potato, steamed carrots, tomato, and greasy ground beef that wasn't flavorful besides the oil/beef aspect. In terms of FOOD and waitstaff, this place has steadily gone downhill in the last 5 years or so... We kept giving it a shot, and finally stopped going about a year ago. I think the high ratings are for the atmosphere. Outdoor dining on the patio or lawn. It's downtown Main St. Pleasanton. Yeah this place is gorgeous and inviting in the spring/summer. But that's it! I'm surprised anyone says this is "Mexican fine dining"... no it ain't! :) They're suckered in by some of the uber-snobs of Pleasanton sitting outside. Food.. well it kinda sucks. Especially for the prices they charge. The 2 great things about this place - location and tequila. You can find waaay better food and service elsewhere.

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the Pleasanton area. It's high end and the menu has many items that you won't find at other typical Mexican places. They also have great outdoor seating so it's an awesome place in the summer, and they have a huge tequila selection. Some of the best dishes are Camarones Xochitl, Enjococado and they have the best Mole Poblano around, and their chips/salsas are awesome too. The big downside is it's very very expensive so we only go a few times a year.

They need to invest in the really large margarita glasses that are as big as your head and I might return and pay ten dollars for that. The chips and salsa were delicious. I can't believe this doesn't have better ratings. I've eaten here half a dozen times, at least, and the food has always be very good, if not great. Last time I was here I had the mole and chicken which I am always disappointed in at restaurants. I used to live in a very small town in Mexico {Patzcuaro} and have had home made moles that takes days to prepare and are to die for. This was not as good as that, but was very good and the only decent mole I have ever had in a restaurant. I can't remember everything I've eaten here but it's always been good. The atmosphere is another huge plus. Eat outside on the patio if the weather is decent and watch the world, or at least downtown Pleasanton, go by. I'm meeting the girls here for lunch today and we are planning on a lovely day in the warm spring afternoon. Fun and yummy..and a few margaritas!

Cool place! I've been there once for Lunch and once for Dinner. Lunch was great, HUGE portions and I liked their menu choices better. Dinner was "alright" bit a but pricey. The Carnitas are awesome and the margaritas are even better!! Over 200+ tequilas to choose from as well... I've had the Don Julio (called the Dr J margarita) and the Cabo Wabo margarita...both were good. I want to go in the summer, the inside can get loud and crowded very quickly.

Came here for a bachelorette party. We were treated nicely from the staff. We sat outside, which was very nice too. The food was very good. I had the shrimp plate Alex style because I was told diablo style was too hot for me by the waiter. And the margarita's were delicious! But if you are coming here for authentic mexican food, it's not gonna happen. No cheese enchiladas, chicken tacos, carne asada burritos of the norm you expect to be mexican food. I find this place to be really expensive. My plate cost $24. I found it interesting that the same plate at the Blue Agave in Fremont costs $23 and even more interesting that the Mountain View restaurant called Fiesta Del Mar the same plate cost $17. WTF??? I think this restaurant is sadly taking advantage of their customers!!

I recently took the wife for dinner on Saturday night - we had no plans and decided to drop in an take our chances on getting a table. Note: with out a reservation you will be seated...however they tend to treat you more like a leper and they will seat you in a section for other diners that have no reservations even though the have many empty tables available - (go figure). The evening was pleasant and dining outside was very nice especially because they had a singer named Jimmy that was very good and he sang a lot of older, popular tunes from the 70's and 80' very nicely actually. The food was just OK and for the price they are charging for Mexican food did not really match up well. I ordered the chicken mole - the mole sauce was very good however they smothered the overcooked chicken with it (less is more). My wife ordered the enchiladas also covered in a brown sauce not traditional and they were also heavy handed with the sauce on this dish as well. The Mexican rice is very bland and the bean not much better. Wine list below average - we did manage to find a couple of glasses of wine that were drinkable with our meal. The outdoor seating is looking run down and shabby as mentioned as well by another reviewer.

Great place for a business lunch and drinks on a nice summer day. Blue Agave is located right in downtown Pleasanton and has tons of outdoor seating with shade for a comfy lunch outdoors. The three kinds of salsa are excellent and nachos were good. The carne asada salad was good sized with an ample portion of tasty steak. For drinks they have all kinds of tequila (hence "blue agave") to create any margarita to your heart's desire. Yes, this place is a bit pricey and may not serve the most authentic Mexican food but very pleasant overall experience. Bottom line: Lunch outside Blue Agave rocks. And the salsa rocks even more. Not for the penny pinchers.

This was a great summer day restaurant! We ate outdoors shaded by many umbrellas, and it was awesome for people watching. We were served chips and 3 types of salsa to start. 5 star outdoor seating, 3 for food and a 2 for value. We went there for lunch the other day and it made me not want to go back. It was 20 cents more expensive for lunch for three than it was for our Forbes Mill Lobster and Seafood Risotto dinner for two. My ceasar salad was terrible. I thought I had it once before and it was good but this was so bad I can't imagine it ever being good. A tiny portion of dry lettuce with what looked like fried shrimp pieces scattered on top. They were not actually fried, just heavily seasoned and simply not good. When I asked for more dressing I was given some sort of greasy honey mustard. Don't be tempted to order this. My hubby ordered a burrito that looked more like an enchilada, again not a winner. The only good dish was the $17 spicy shrimp in red sauce that the waiter recommended but that's more of a dinner price to me. The $30 pitcher of margaritas were also not a hit in my opinion. Too pricy but a nice location. I've been back a few times for the atmosphere but I am never really happy with the food. El Balazo in Pleasanton I'll stick with your burritos. You may not be in downtown but based on taste and price your top of the line

Did I eat at the same restaurant as ya'll did? I came here with my husband and my parents and found the food to be not that flavorful and the service not so great. Someone that my husband works with recommended the Tequila steak from here. I couldn't even believe what I ordered could be passed off as *meat*. The waiter seemed to be getting annoyed and impatient when my parents asked him questions about the different types of Tequila they had on hand. I mean they had A LOT of Tequila... it's only natural to ask a few questions for God's sake. The prices were comical for what we had. I wish we had just gone to Taco Bell, I would have been a hell of a lot happier....SERIOUSLY! I would strongly dis advise anyone from eating here...ever.

Blue Agave is a pretty nice Mexican restaurant. The food is really good. The only draw back is it doesn't come out hot enough. Sometimes it is lukewarm. The flavors and tastes are there but just it needs to be a little hotter coming from the kitchen. The margarita's are pretty good though and for the tequila afficiandos they have a wide variety. On a summer day, this is one a really nice place to go and eat outdoors or on the patio. If you are in downtown Pleasanton or near by, this place is a must stop

For a first date, I was left picking a restaurant with the help of Yelp. I knew I wanted Mexican, and I knew I wanted to eat in downtown Pleasanton. I've been to Fernando's and Alberto's but thought I'd try a new place. Though the restaurant has had mixed reviews on Yelp, I've always been intrigued by this place and its large, inviting outdoor dining area. I didn't realize it was a little on the pricey side, but luckily for me I was being treated to a birthday dinner. I was impressed by the quickness at which we were seated on a Saturday night and at which the server came over to take our drink orders. My margarita was decent, nothing fancy but very enjoyable none the less. There menu consists of different and interesting dishes instead of just the normal enchilada, burrito and fajita selection that the average mexican restaurant has. I enjoyed the pollo serano and my date loved her dish as well. The date went well and we ended up staying quite a while talking. Though they asked multiple times to take our plates, it was presented very politely in an attempt to get them out of our way, not rush us out the door. Even as they were closing up, they let us stay and leave at our own place. I will definitely go back here, especially for date nights!

"you'd never know this was a Mexican restaurant" said my high end Latino companion. I mention this because this is how their voice mail describes them, "a High End Mexican Restaurant". Well OK, if you say so, I wasn't paying but if you say so. I was surprised that on a day of such heat they had us sit outside but it was comfortable in the shade and under umbrellas that it was a lovely experience for eating. Their margarita menu beckons and I lamented "if only this wasn't a business lunch!" but it was and the food was excellent. There wasn't much for a vegetarian, save the basic veggie burrito and the fajitas vegetables. I went with the fajita and was surprised by the generous size of the portion and the diversity of vegetables-broccoli, mushrooms, squash, oh my! How I ate any of it after scarfing down the corn chips and 3 salsas (medium, spicy and woohoo!) I don't know but it was all delicious. I'm not often in Pleasanton but if I am, I know where I am going!

Brilliant place to be on a warm evening. Lots of outdoor tables in a large, breezy outdoor courtyard. Huge tequila menu with associated margarita choices. Sope Cuarteto and Chalupas de Camaron appetizers were both above average. Chips and salsa not as good as everyone says, but at least there are three different kinds of salsa and the chips are possibly done on premises or at least a cut above the usual grocery store crapola. Would definitely go back.

I went to the Blue Agave after reading the review here on the site. I have to say me and the date were IMPRESSED!! I had not turned 21 yet at the time so I was unable to try out the many tequilas which were offered, but the list was AMAZING. The outside seating looks a bit crowded if it were at capacity, but on a warm night eating outside with friends, it definitely would be great. My venture into the restaurant was during the East Bay's COLD STORM. My first thought going in side was for them to "TURN THE HEATER ON". it was so cold. I recommend to go when the weather is nice. The 3 salsas were great, especially the hot salsa. Tables perhaps a little crowded once chips were brought in. The main dish which was the chicken that had the "100 year old recipe" was excellent! The service was great as well, and when I walked in we felt immediately welcomed. CONS *Too Cold in Winter *small tables for 2 Pros *FOOD WAS EXCELLENT *Service great *atmosphere and building were beyond expectations

After living near Main Street for 6 months, we have tried most of the downtown Pleasanton restaurants and I think Blue Agave may be the best. Yes, it is definitely more expensive than your average taqueria-because it is not one! It is a high-end restaurant serving Oaxacan food. I think they would be better served advertising themselves as such, rather than lumping themselves into the same category as other Main Street Mexican places like the terrible Alberto's down the street (which serves up giant, soggy burritos slathered in cold, goopy sauce). While I have enjoyed the mole at Blue Agave, I think that my favorite is the huitlacoche-so incredible earthy and savory. Now that the weather has improved, I am stoked to go out and enjoy a margarita on the lovely patio. Nota bene: the lowish reviews for this place are another reason that most Yelp ratings should be taken with a grain of salt. A few people decide that while the food, service, and decor were good, the price was too high and they give it 1 star. Just stick to McDonald's if all you care about is cheap grub and quit ruining the ratings for everyone else.

My husband and I were both looking forward to trying out this restaurant for dinner yesterday- July 23, 2011 at around 6:30ish. We walked in through the front patio towards the podium. There were plenty of open tables outside. We are both very understanding people and we expected we would have to wait since we did not make reservations. When the hostess finally turned our direction; there was no smile. No hello, but in a quick and rude manner asked us if we had reservations. We replied no and she immediately told us in a condescending tone;" We have a lot of reservations tonight and you're going to have to wait!". It was a big turn off for us, but we were willing to wait. We waited and were never called. We ended up having a delicious dinner at Hap's Steak and Seafood just around the corner. Food was awesome and customer service from all staff was excellent. Completely the opposite from the hostess at Blue Agave.

Excellente! Sister restaurant to Fiesta Del Mar in Mountain View, these places are so good! Excellent Tequilla selection, yes the food and drink is on the expensive side, but who cares its great! Go to taco bell if you want a cheap meal. Slow service? It's supposed to be slow and kick back, in a rush hit taco bell drive thru.

I have given this place 2 chances! Not so good, both times. The Food looks authentic, but having lived in MX for a year, I never saw food like this. Maybe a Oaxaca thing? The food was so expensive for what it was and I felt like I could have whipped it up at home! Another Gordon Ramsey makeover indeed!!!

While driving through downtown Pleasanton, my boyfriend and I came across this place. I thought it looked really nice, I loved how they arranged the outdoor dining. Well, it was a beautiful Sunday evening and I suggested to go ahead and try this place. Boy was I wrong, honestly my boyfriend and I should stuck with Chevy's we definitely would of loved our food and payed less. My boyfriend did not like his dish at all. He ordered the Seafood enchilada, the sauce was not good and the crab tasted on the funky side. I had the burritto, it was okay but a little on the dry side. They had fried pinto beans on the side and it did not taste fresh. The lesson learned...should of checked out my fellow yelpers first before going to this restaurant...from the reviews, I've seen thus far, I would of never came to this place for dinner.

Wow, and not in a good way. This was one of the worst dining experiences I have had in a long time. I thought this would be a fun place to try and so took my family out for dinner (8 of us including 2 children), we were seated outside and then left there for 45 minutes before a waiter finally came and took our order - and only then because I got up and went and found one! After ordering we waited over an HOUR for our food to arrive, all the while watching other patrons seated after us receive their meals. The food when it arrived was ok, but definitely NOT worth the almost 2 hour wait or the prices charged. You can just imagine how the 5 and 3 year old enjoyed it! Then I had to go find a waiter again to pay the bill, otherwise we would have been there another hour after the meal was finished. Ok, it was a busy night, but there is just NO excuse for that kind of service. What a huge disappointment this place was - I was so embarrassed that I suggested it to my family and wish I had taken them somewhere else - Las Fuentes for example, it may not have the atmosphere, but it makes up for it in service and good food.

0 stars This place is a pathetic waste of money. Went there with some friends, while we looked over the menu, we ordered two pitchers of margaritas. We requested the margaritas to be blended, the waiter said no they don't do that. While we were drinking our watered down margaritas, we witnessed our waiter pouring blended margaritas for the table right next to us, nice. We looked over our menu some more, and more and even more, yes we all could easily have changed our minds 7 times bc it took him 45 minutes to finally take our orders. Was this just a ploy to get us tipsy so we could order more food and more margaritas? Or does the service just suck? I think all of the above. When our food came out another 40 minutes later, none of us were happy, a few of us ordered steak, one ordered shrimp, it was all disgusting. And the dishes will run you about $30 each, so please do not waste your time and your hard earned money here. What a horrible experience and waste of my time.

I do-not understand any positive review of this place. The food is tasteless and service the worse I have ever seen. We had to get up and track down someone to get us water, drinks, remove plates, refresh salsa, more chips, everything! The prices do not fit the service or food! The best Mexican I have had in this area is Las Casitas in Fremont (NEVER FAILS) but if you're in Pleasanton head down the street to Albertos Cantina, at least the food tastes good there and they have a bit better service (even when busy). A big BLAH rating for this over-priced facade of a restaurant!

After my husband and I received a call telling us that our cruise had been canceled less than 24 hours before we were due to leave, we decided to treat ourselves to a nice dinner and drown our disappointment with margaritas. The Blue Agave just topped off our day of disappointments with another great big disappointment. My fresh spring salad was so old it was already almost compost and the tomatoes were half frozen on top of being mushy and flavorless. No excuse for a nice restaurant in California to have tasteless, mushy tomatoes in August. My enchiladas, well let's just say I've had better frozen cheese enchiladas. My husbands pork he said was ok. Now the pitcher of Dr J margarita that cost a whopping $42, if it actually had any Grand Marnier in it I have a bridge in Brooklyn. The only thing the Blue Agave has going for it is the wonderful patio, but even that won't take us back there anytime soon.

It's okay TexMex at SUPer expensive prices. Seriously, why are you paying $20 for a burrito that is $6 at the best taqueria? Because you are on Main Street Pleasanton with a lovely outdoor courtyard and kick ass tequilla list. But they really should spice up the menu and get creative, a tad boring. I did have some good crab & shrimp enchiladas, but not super flavorful. The flan was weird tasting, I didn't even finish it. The ambiance is nice, service is okay, and live music adds points. But it's too much $$ for the quality of food.

I really like this restaurant. Echoing what many have already said, the patio really makes this place a bit of a destination on a warm evening. The tequila list is also really good. The food is good although there isn't a HUGE selection. The prices are also a bit high, but again, you're also paying for the nice patio location right on Main Street. The service can be a little spotty, but I've never had horrible service.... just a little slow and/or uninspired. No biggie. 4 stars.

I like this restaurant. The out door seating is quaint, the drinks are refreshing and the food is always delicious (I usually order the plates with Chicken Molle). Also the dessert flan is one of a kind! It has a really homey horchata taste unlike some I've eaten in the past. I can still taste the flavorful almonds and cinnamon. Albeit, make sure you have a lot of time to enjoy the bottomless home made chips/salsa as the food/service is a little slow.

I went to the Blue Agave last night for a few drinks with my husband. I liked the Margaritas (I think we ordered the house margaritas) the pitcher was 22 bucks, which isn't bad because they use good tequila. We sat at the bar; the bar tender was really nice and we had a good time watching him make so many different drinks. One I started drinking, I realized that hunger was creeping in.... I decided what the heck I'll order something off their menu. The appetizers didn't sound too good so I moved over to their Entree menu. That's about the time I realized that food items at this location are way over priced. The entree selection was very limited - I believe there were 4 or 5 items that were on the menu. 28 dollars for an Ahi Tuna salad. Ok, so I didn't go there - but I can tell you - I know how to cook and love to cook - I have purchased Ahi Tuna in the past and could make that salad for about 20 bucks and it would be enough to feel 4 people. So anyway, I decided to ask for something that was not on the menu - my favorite - Enchiladas Suiezas (Cheese Enchiladas) - the bar tender offered to have them make it for me even though it was not on their menu. When he brought me the plate - the food looked great - nice presentation. The taste was OK - definitely 1000 times better than Fernandos. When I got the bill for the two enchiladas I realized that I had been had. 17.95 for 2 enchiladas? That is way too much. I graciously paid for it and gave the guy a huge tip - because he had been cool and I realize that he didn't have to be so nice to us. Anyway - today - out of pure curiosity - I checked the website for their sister restaurant - Fiesta Del Mar - Guess what: The Enchiladas Suizas are only 13.95 on their dinner menu. Guess Pleasanton is more expensive than Mountain View. Oh well, that's life. I'll be back again for the drinks but not so much for the food.

Have only tried for lunch...service has been very attentive and the food has been consistently good. A little pricey, but the wonderful location in downtown is probably the reason for this! I'd definitely recommend the texas-style flautas plate. Haven't tried a margarita here yet, but they have a ton of tequilas to choose from!

Really good upscale Mexican food. I've never been disappointed, but it is slightly overpriced. The look and feel of the place is awesome. One of the best. Go in the summer and sit outside for dinner. As long as you don't sit next to a lady with a really loud and annoying laugh, you should have a great time.

No fish... only shrimp and crab with a very bizarre cinnamon coating... This was a sad realization, but my lovely dining companion and I tucked into the margarita menu... uh, yeah, its there after the tequila listings... keep turning the page... yeah, one more,.. no, one more.. you get the idea... there must be about 120 tequilas listed... and FINALLY you get to the margarita menu. Dios Mio! My margarita was tasty, and my food just so-so. The taco shells could do with being thicker so that they don't smash into a million pieces when you attempt to simply pick them up. Why three stars when I'm not a fan of the food? Well, the patio is just wonderful. Someone really thought about the layout, design, and art, which is nice for a change. And the waiters were very polite and muy simpatico. I'll probably try it again sometime and avoid the snickerdoodle-seasoned seafood.

This is a very nice place for a summer/fall evening when you are meeting a bunch of friends for some drinks and dinner. The last time I was there in the evening - they had a live band playing some songs. Sounded genuine - my colleague from spain was actually singing the song:). The margarita pitchers are decent ( a little bit too much on the icy side and hence watered down). Chips and salsa is normal Americanized mexican fare. Food was also very standard - nothing spectacular. There were couple of vegetarian friendly options that were available. I think the location (downtown pleasanton) is what makes this a nice place - not the other way around.

The best thing about this place is the outdoor patio. I love dining outside on a warm night and this restaurant has a great ambiance if that's what you're looking. Minus one star for the slightly overpriced menu. Entrees ran mostly in the $20-$25 range - $15-$20 would have been better. The margaritas are strong, however a pitcher will set you back $24-$28. The food is decent, but nothing spectacular. Minus the second star for the unnecessarily long wait times when there were open tables clearly available. Our waiter was very friendly and jovial.

I have never in my life had such an amazing meal. From the fresh lemon water, ice cold, and truly like straight from a glacier....I am from Huntington Beach, CA, my BF was working at the Good Guys Car show this last weekend, so his mom and I decided to grab a bite, well we waited for him. We both had the best drinks, the Boss Margarita comes strongly recommended. The Chips were SO fresh, and the atmosphere and decorations were amazing tooo!!!! The guacamole was the BEST I have ever had, and my BF took major offense to this, ahahaha, but it was was. My bean and cheese burrito was so warm, and the black beans and cheese were perfectly portioned. The tacos meal, is what my BF's mom had, and she could not stop raving about how GREAT their food was, their RICE is even the best we ever had. We were very happy and I am currently trying to talk my BF Into a V-DAY trip to SAn Fran, and take the Bart into Pleasanton just to eat at the Blue Agave Club for Valentines Day!!! Service was amazing as well!!!

My wife and I went to the Blue Agave Club on the strength of a recommendation from a local magazine; I want the author to pay me back for my meal. My wife's combination -- skirt steak, a chile relleno and enchilada -- was a huge disappointment. She said the steak was tough and stringy, and the chile relleno was one of the worst she'd ever had; even Chevy's was better. My pork tenderloin (suggested by the waiter), stuffed with spinach and pine nuts, was completely bland, save for the charred meat. AT the least, the chef should have taken the cilantro garnish and minced it, then mixed with the spinach to offset the savory meat. In addition, the pork was grainy and mushy. One side dish, made of half over-carmelized and half-undercooked onion strips, was disgusting. The other side dish, a potatoes au gratin, was nearly tasteless too, except for the slight tang of the cheese. At 23.50 per entree, I expected richly, subtly flavored dishes. Instead, the best flavors came from the three varieties of salsa that came with the complementary chips. In addition, the setting was uncomfortable. We came at twighlight, and one of the heat lamps near our table apparently ran out of fuel midway through our appetizer, since the waiter couldn't relight it. So, my left side was slightly chilled all night. To cap off the night, some lout with a big subwoofer in his truck blasted his stereo from across the street for the last 10 minutes of the meal, and none of the restaurant staff either intervened or called the police. Avoid this restaurant until it changes chefs and management.

Over priced Mexican food. . . .hmm, and a pitcher of their House special Marguerita for $42.00. I am sure you can predict what I have to say about this place. It's really not that great to be honest. I think Chevy's is better quality than this place. I ordered their chicken tortilla soup and I felt like I was having thick chili instead. And then I ordered their blue agave salad and it just was so plain, and I questioned what makes it cost $8.00. The catus slice was cold and slimy, and I just wasn't feeling it. Neither of my friends had any great compliments about their dish either. My one friend ordered the buffalo burger and she couldn't even taste the difference between a regular beef of buffalo. And I've made buffalo burgers, and I know how to pimp them out. It's just disappointing. Oh well, I am very critical, so take it or leave it. The only thing that save this place is the atmosphere, the nice seating arrangement, the music and service. All excellent for sure.

Went here for a friend's special day. Don't let the cool house feel and outside dining atmosphere fool you. The food is GROSS GROSS GROSS! I had a crab burrito type thing. It was dry inside and the sauce on the outside just did not look right at all. It looked like pink vomit (sorry, but it did!). FYI....it might seem packed, but it's probably just the diners outside. The inside is empty. Also, we had a table of 12 people. One half of the table got good service....drinks quickly, replenished chips, refills, etc., but the other half was neglected.

This could be my favorite restaurant in P-town. OK, it is my favorite restaurant in P-town. From the margaritas and the 100-year-old chicken recipe to the staff and the outdoor patio - I love it all. THE best place to dine on the patio on a summer/fall evening. Oh, and be sure to save room for dessert...if the staff is feeling particularly nice, then they may even put together a sampler platter for you. Their coffee is spiced with cinnamon...interesting! Want brunch? They only have it 3 times each year - mother's day, father's day and easter.

If you get there before 5pm you'll probably be lucky enough to find parking nearby - otherwise you'll be competing with the universe to find evening parking. The food is basic, and the drinks are overpriced. It's great because it has a huge outdoor patio where you can get drunk off the tequila and watch the people walk by. It sucks because the waiters aren't big on customer service, and it's pricey. If you go, I'd reccomend just getting drinks and appetizers and finding dinner some place else. Order the Corazon margarita.

My favorite Mexican restaurant. The food is higher end Mexican and the best Margeritas I have ever had. I really like the outside, patio seating with the live Flamenco guitarist. Great atmosphere! I even bring my kids as they are entertained by the music and they love the cheese and chorizo dip. The servers are always really friendly and relaxed. Whenever the weather is warm and we want to sit outside, we come here.

First of all, I wouldn't have made the trek out to Pleasanton if my boss hadn't given me a fatty gift certificate. I was a little apprehensive about going, and kept putting it off... Now I'm thankful I did, because the cheese fondue memories are still fresh in my mind, and I believe I still have some on the egdes of my sleeves, which I am saving for additional calcium the next day I wear my black sweater. We ordered margaritas (which were good) and the cheese-y pepper fondue (Rajas de Chile Poblanos) with homemade corn tortillas, and we should have just stopped there and gotten giant straws. It was fabulous, and the appetizer was huge (maybe a perfect appie for four). We had to leave cheese uneaten (very sad, actually). I ordered a steak meal (I think it was a seasonal dish, because when I looked online for the name of the plate, it wasn't there). The steak was insanely delicious in a GOOD Mad Cow sort of way, and the potatoes it came with made me see god. Didn't save room for dessert. The interior was absolutely darling: Very modern feeling yet traditional. I adored the carved wooden chairs at all of the tables -- each were different and made in the shapes of celestial beings or kooky animals. We sat right by the front windows, and overlooked the porch where people came in and out. Also, we didn't make reservations, but went right when they opened -- and got seated right away. Ole!

I have never been to downtown Pleasanton - the most I have travelled was the Stoneridge Mall. I met some friends at this restaurant - very inviting restaurant! I always have reservations whenever I go to the suburbs, almost slightly afraid but I was somewhat impressed. It was a beautiful night and we ate out on the patio. It is reallllly cute on the outside and I almost couldn't believe I was in the suburbs. Who would have known and the only hint of suburban life were all the families. Anyhow - enough of me making a big deal of the suburbs. The food was pretty good. The crab enchilladas - pretty tasty and they also played some latin music which almost felt like a latin band was on the premises. Ambience was nice. Since it was outdoor seating you can watch folks walk by. I was amazed at how busy the streets were in downtown Pleasanton. It was just a really nice, relaxed energy. The only thing I didn't like was the over priced margarita pitcher. Would I ever go back again? Sure - only if I was forced to head out to the suburbs again, I'd say, let's go here. I would give it a 5 star - but it is in the burbs.

I went to Blue Agave last Friday night for a friend's birthday and was very surprised on how great not only this place was but also the location AND for the fact that I had NEVER heard of it! The margartias were ever flowing, the weather was perfect , the only downfall was lighting-- while its an outdoor restaurant I felt the lighting was way to low-- I couldnt see all the food on my plate! But other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience!

I really like this place. It's fancier and more expensive than you'd expect for a mexican restaurant. It's got a lot of seafood on the menu. When my friend tried to order horchata, the waiter had no idea what she was talking about. The food's great, but it's definately not your typical Mexican at all. They also give you three kinds of salsa, which are all excellent.

Hmmmm....I am so in love with the cheese fondue appetizer. I dream about it daily. Food is good, nothing noteworthy enough for me to write about. If you're looking for a nice place to have lunch and some drinks, I'd recommend it. Please if you like cheese...order the fondue! You won't be disappointed.

visit the east bay 1/2 doz times a year & go to the blue agae every couple of years or so. took my bff this time & what a disappointment. previously, i was willing to pay the absorbent prices because the food was really good. not this time. the food was sub-par. the help was lacking cordiality, & was very slow. the menu has changed & i suspect the owner has also. that was my last visit!!

Admittedly this is a lovely place to sit outdoors and have an oversized margarita or share pitchers of it. But the food is less Mexico than KFC. Truly disappointing and unclear on the concept. Just like egg foo young and chop suey were invented in the U.S., this restaurant is unclear on the concept. If you want good mexican food, its harder to find than one would expect. Two really good ones are Dona Thomas (Oakland) and its sister walk up outdoor dining on Fourth St. in Berkeley under a different name. Also good is Piquante in Berkeley. The best ever is La Superica (which Julia Child loved) and I look forward to every time I pass through Santa Barbara. A converted gas station, the food could pass muster in a very high class setting. Amazingly good and spoils you for eating food that takes Margarita to swallow--like this restaurant. That 5 star review must have come from an owner's relative.

The only positive comment I can give is the patio area was great. Our server was extremely rude, overcharged us and made our party extremely uncomfortable around closing time by standing next to our table waiting for us to leave so they can clean. The food was not great and way overpriced. I will not go back there or refer to friends.

I have been here a couple of times and am not to impressed. Great location and great view during the summer sitting on the patio but the food is disappointing. The last time I was there I got the carnitas and it was the saltiest thing I have ever eaten and I have eaten a bowl of salt. The food is a bit pricey but you pay for the location nice location. I just wish the food was as nice as the location. The staff is OK not overly trained like you would expect in a nicer restaurant.

if you want "mexican" food, a fajita burrito with refried beans and a melon margarita as big as your head, go to chevy's. if you want real cooking, interesting items and high quality tequila, well then... tonights meal was excellent. me, hubby, mom and dad. started with a pitcher of blanco tequila margarita and calamari and rajas de chile poblano appetizers. calamari is self explanitory, the rajas is a pile of melty cheese with peppery goodies through out served with little tortillas. for dinner i ordered a strawberry margarita (not authentic i know) and the camarones xochitl, which are shrimp over rice in an amazing sauce. sooooo much food. mom insisted on ordering flan for dessert, it was well spiced and perfect custard consistancy. we lingered over our meal for a good hour and a half, service was good, the patio was perfect for a warm summer evening. once we went in winter and ate inside, which is kinda tight but very cute.

My boyfriend and I were given a $100 gift certificate to this place and tried it last night. We got there at 5:30 so there were only a few tables on the patio. The patio, btw, was really great and comfy and the weather was perfect. We started off with margaritas. The menu has about 40 to choose from. We asked the waiter to suggest one and he didnt pick the most expensive, which is always nice. The margies were delicious. We also started off with guac, pretty standard but then were blown away by the entrees. I got the Camerones Xochitl, which apparently got the Best Dish on the Menu award in 02. It was excellent. My boyfriend is vegan and the menu was very vegan friendly, rice and beans both being vegetarian. He got the Vegetable Enchiladas and loved them. Hes pretty picky too. The prices were a little high but with the GC, we didnt think about it. I would highly recommend this restaurant. The staff was really helpful and friendly too!

Excellent food, excellent drinks, great service. This is not "typical" Mexican food. I would call it California-gourmet Mexican or something so if people come here expecting typical tacos, burritos, and enchiladas, they will be disappointed. However, every dish I've tried here, including the shrimp everyone is talking about, has been delicious. The patio is a great place to eat but inside is nice too if it's cold or rainy. Sometimes the tiny bar is fun to sit at just to people-watch. This is definitely a treat/special-occasion restaurant unless you're prepared to throw down $100 for two people with drinks, but is well worth it. Enjoy!

I was just at the Blue Agave this past weekend on Sunday for lunch with a group of girlfriends. There were 9 of us, so we had a nice table outside on the patio with plenty of shade. It was a beautiful day, so was a treat to dine outdoors. Our waiter was very efficient and friendly. As mentioned in previous posts they bring chips and three different salsas and whenever we asked for a refill, they were prompt about it. Everyone ordered different items from the menu and there really weren't any complaints- I know a few people ordered the steak salad and thought the dressing was out of this world. Two people ordered the chile rellenos and thought those were also very good (they cleaned their plates), a few ordered quesadillas and said they were delicious- we did have one of those get lost in the order though, so one person had to wait a bit longer for her meal. I ordered the carne asada which came with rice/beans and tortillas. The steak was cooked to perfection and I enjoyed it quite a bit. We had a very nice time and of course being gal pals- we were taking plenty of photos to document our lunch date and the wait staff volunteered to take group photos for us- it was a nice time had by all! One thing to note that a friend mentioned to me is that she thought the Margaritas were quite small for $10. I was drinking soda that day as the Designated Driver...so I wasn't paying attention to the drink size or cost. I will say that my carne asada lunch platter with diet coke was $20 out the door with tax and tip.

On a wine tasting trip with some girlfriends, it was decided that we needed a great ambiance to go with our cute outfits. This place has great outdoor seating and a guitar player so it was picked. It's on Main St and it was a nice night so seating outside was a plus. I give them credit and stars for the ambiance and the service. We were greeted nicely and sat right away. Our waiter was very friendly and I'm sure it helped that we had 2 birthdays at our table and very good looking ladies. Chips and 3 kinds of salsa come to the table. I really liked the one that had a green tint to it. We asked for a hot sauce for out meals and it was an orange looking sauce but it was super spicy! They make it there from what the waiter told us and it's really good but be prepared to sweat and drink a lot of water. Other than that, that's where the good stuff ends. The food was not anything I would go for again. I'm very picky with my Mexican food as I have lived with a lady who was a fantastic cook and my MIL is awesome in the kitchen. When I go out for Mexican, it's usually a taqueria. I tend to order what my MIL won't make. I ordered the enchiladas de camarones y cangrejo (shrimp and crab) $19 which come topped with a creamy pink sauce and served with rice and beans. I ate it because I was hungry but it wasn't that good. My fillings were not hot, more like warm to lukewarm and I could tell that it wasn't fresh. The sauce was good though. I think I would try other places on Main St. than come here again. If I come, it will be for the margaritas which were tasty.

Blue Agave is a cozy little restaurant that sits in a cozy little house on the cozy little downtown area of Pleasanton. Serving up lots of tequila, pitchers of margs, and some inventive Mex food, and boasting a big front patio that looks like a great place to hang out in the summer heat, this place seems to have a good thing going for itself. The food itself, however, is not that astonishing. It's decent, but for the $14-$20 price range, it's not that great. The mole sauce on my chicken was decent, and the guac and salsa selections were good, but the rest was sort of par for the course. It's good for the suburban, upscale Mex food vibe, but put this place in the Mission, and I'll take a $5 burrito instead. That said, I have to give the place 4-stars for the amazing tequila selection and the decent food presence in what could otherwise be a suburban chain-food wasteland. While I don't seem to be too stoked on the food in general, for where it's at and for the fun vibe it dishes, I think I will not hesitate to visit again when I return to the beautiful downtown Pleasanton area. It definitely beats the hell out of Chili's!!!

If I could give no stars I would. The cheese dip appetizer was good, but the hanger steak was not glazed, it was covered in a favorless sauce. it was also not medium rare, and it was tough. I told the waitress I didn't care for it, and she apologized and walked away. My wife's dish was just ok. Not good, just edible. The service was slooooow and you could hear the servers and staff goofing around and laughing in the back. It was like an episode of resturant steakout. The napkins were old and left white lint all over my wife's black pants. finally, when the server dropped off our check, she said she would be right back. She ver came back. 15 minutes later we had to get someone else to take our check for us. I'm really not that hard to please. I like food almost anywhere. But I would never go back here. Ever.

I dined here for the first time this evening and it was so disappointing. While the ambiance was nice and the restaurant mostly empty, the food was bland and the service very impersonal. The waitor barely spoke a word to us and never once smiled. I chose the Enjococado 100-Year Old Family Recipe which consists of boneless breast of chicken drenched in a sour cream-based sauce with roasted guajillo chiles, special herbs and garnished with almonds. This was served with the staple rice and beans. I didn't even touch the beans. They looked gross and the rice was basically tasteless. The main chicken dish was just average. Do yourself a favor and skip this overpriced restaurant and go to your nearest taco truck. You will find much better food and prices there for sure.

Apparently some time ago I mentioned to my hubby that I might like to try this place out...so he made reservations (sorry this is making me laugh right now because there was hardly anyone in the place while we ate) and we headed over for my birthday dinner. Gourmet Mex Food is what we thought they offered. The menu is vast. We ordered their specialty, an award winning shrimp dish as well as a chipotle pasta dish, salmon with cilantro sauce and filet mignon with chipotle pomegranate sauce. TG I ordered the filet-that's all I have to say about that!!! (not worth the $31 but the best thing we ordered by far) I will elaborate here for anyone that wants to know the deets: The shrimp dish had a black sauce all over it. couldn't even see the shrimp. We sent it back and ordered it without the sauce. It was ok then but not great. The cilantro sauce for the salmon tasted like olive oil and not much else. The salmon was not cooked properly but was very dry.The chipotle pasta dish was so spicy that my husband couldn't eat it...just ate the meat. I'm thinking chipotle+creamy+ butter sauce= 2 Tums, 1 Pepcid and alot of bad burps. Maybe in the summer outside on the patio there is a different vibe.... a few margaritas, some chips and salsa...I might be back for that. Silver lining: Service was excellent. The staff was attentive, helpful when they could see we weren't really eating our food and came out with a nice birthday flan at the end!

Great Tasting Food. Fun Ambiance. They brought chips and salsa to the table; there were three different salsas to try. I was surprised and delighted that it wasn't just the typical, one mild, the other spicy, each had a unique nuance all its own. The servers were nice, a bit distant, but still attentive. The menu included enchiladas, etc., but I was surprised at the interesting variety the dishes contained. I tried a type of pork that was wrapped around spinach and covered with a fig glaze with mashed potatoes and asparagus. The pork was DELICIOUS. The ambiance is lovely, next time I will try sitting on the patio which looks very inviting. Not a place I would go all the time, because it was a little pricey, but the food made up for that by being so tasty.

Well I must say the location, decor, and outside dinning is great. However I was not eating the decor, outside dinning area, or the location. The food was very plain and boring. What a disappointment. I was hoping since this place looks fairly trendy and nice that the food would be just the same. I was mistaken. I ordered some simple taco's and they was pretty plain, not tasty, and left me really annoyed. You know how it is, a lot of places look nice but just can not deliver on the food end. I bet this place would be great for a few drinks and some chips and salsa. However for the price of the items, lack of flavor and lack of traditional flavors more importantly. I have to say I will pass on returning! No Mas Blue Agave!

The menu is limited and expensive. Have a Margarita at the bar and eat somewhere else. The owner has a restaurant called Fiesta del Mar in Mountain View that has amazing food with a better menu, but is a dive. Take that menu and put it in this restaurant and you have a true winner!

patio. you want to eat here because you want to sit outside on a warm summer evening and people watch. a legitamate reason. the food is good and of good quality, but so expensive for mexican. dinner entrees are about $20, except for the burrito which is $12. plus there wasn't as large a selection as i'd hoped. (see website for menu) i had the shrimp enchiladas, drenched in creamy seafood sauce. a bit saucy for me, but shrimp (the small kind) was abundant. an order can be made one shrimp / one crab. my dad had the salmon, which was good, and the tiny chopped sauteed vegetables on top were even better. my mom had the burrito, it was just an average burrito. everyone here seemed to be celebrating a special occasion, maybe cuz it's a $plurge. definitely cheaper at lunch. largest tequila menu i've ever seen, attentive service, excellent patio atmosphere.

We went here last year to celebrate my friends birthday since we live in San Jose and she lives in Modesto we wanted something in between. And the name agave we figured must be great. First we got there and they took forever to seat us. We were seated outside which was really nice. The margaritas were delish but a bit pricey. When we ordered the food it took forever for us to get our things and when we got them I got the wrong dish it was not what i ordered. I have seen that movie waiting so there was no way i was going to return it so i ate it and it sucked. We all have family so hardly ever get to have girls nite out. This place was practically kicking us out before 10. During the desert we told the waiter that it was my friends birthday and his response was that's good for her. :( then took a pic for her. WTF at least sing happy bday and give her a scoop of ice cream it wont kill you. So by the time we left the restaurant DOWNTOWN was dead there was a little whole in the wall bar we went to but soon they kicked us out too. So we will never be going to either the restaurant or Pleasanton.

We hosted our rehearsal dinner for our wedding in the private backyard patio and it was perfect. When we initially found this place, we planned on having the rehearsal dinner in the front patio since it seemed like the perfect setting for a Sept evening. Then the manager, Julio, told us about the private backyard patio. It was even more perfect - he said we could set it up any way we wanted and it could accomodate our guest list. We could also play music, and most of all, it was private. We did a buffet and everyone really enjoyed it! When we arrived at our event, we were extremely impressed with how beautiful the patio turned out to be - they had done an amazing job of decorating it. Julio and the staff went above and beyond to provide excellent customer service. Some additional guests came and they immediately set up more tables to accomodate them. Also, we invited other guests later in the evening for drinks and it was great to have this open space to mingle comfortably with everyone. They had set up a bar in the back for us and the margaritas were excellent!!! We were so happy we hosted our event there - it was perfect!

I enjoyed a lovely dinner at Blue Agave with some great company. It is a unique setting in a older Victorian house that has been converted into a restaurant in the downtown Pleasanton area. I was worried about parking but there is a parking lot right behind the restaurant which was fairly empty. When I entered the restaurant, I was greeted by interesting display of Tequila bottles, two thumbs up for the restaurant right there. Given that this was a house that was converted into a restaurant, it has a nice warm vibe to it. Check out the chairs BTW. There is also a bar that is in a separate room. The owner or manager does a good job marketing the place. There are tons of displays that show the different awards that the restaurant has won, makes you feel like you HAVE to like it. I tried Bohemia beer which was good. The guac was great and I liked the enjococado which I believe is their signature dish. Overall, I left satisfied and happy.

Probably the worst Mexican food I've had. Guacamole taste like it came right out of a tube, the menu says it's made to order but that wasn't true at all. Oh a BIGGIE, the MENU they have online is not accurate, they no longer make the things we were so excited to try, the waiters couldn't recommend anything to substitute. We ordered the chicken mole and it was very disappointing. It tasted like a broiled piece of chicken that had been sitting under the warmer for an hour and mole sauce was poured over it, microwaved for 2 min and served.

Why oh why is Blue Agave so far away??? Tucked away in downtown Pleasanton, this place is awesome, and I only wish it was closer to my house. From the long and impressive tequila list, to the strong margaritas and phenomenal food, Blue Agave is a winner. The salsa is some of the closest I've found to Tex-Mex in the Bay, and several items on the menu seem Tex-Mex inspired, especially stuffing the relleno peppers with meat (your choice of beef, chicken, or pork)... Holy of Holies!! Finally, I've found someone in the Bay who does this! Any time I'm in the area, I will be back for more

One of the more expensive Mexican places in Pleasanton. Don't get me wrong -- they are really good. I have never had a bad meal there. But the prices can be pretty high. Check out this place on a cool, but warm Fall evening or a cool, but warm Spring night. Outdoor seating is really nice then.

I read the reviews and I agree to an extent. I have never had a bad experience personally and I love a nice summer night on the patio with a margarita (which are great here). It's not perfect service and we often prompt them for water and refills. The ambiance is probably the best in Pleasanton for outdoor dining and they have live music sometimes (very popular on weekends). They have over poured several guests which is interesting to watch but can get annoying. Again, food is a little on the pricey end for Mexican food I will agree there but I enjoy it enough to feel satisfied about my purchase. My husband and I come here every few months and enjoy ourselves.

This me and my husbands first pick for date night. Jesus in the bar is the BEST!!! Always friendly. We always look forward to seeing him. The La Finka margarita is the best. I love that they make there own mix. Food is delicious. The only down fall is that the bar area is super small and they close early. I would recommend this place to everyone .

Went all the way to Pleasanton to meet a friend for lunch At the Blue Agave club. we get there at 2:30 on a Sunday afternoon and the place is CLOSED!? WTF? Apparently they close at 2 for some unknown reason and The waiter we run into says they will reopen at 5. Pretentious much? So i did what anyone would do, i went to one of the dozen other cafe's that actually want my money and enjoyed their food and hospitality instead. I can't review the food, but i can say the attitude left a bad taste in my mouth.

Over-priced, fairly mediocre Mexican food. Service was non-existent; took us 30 mins to order and another 30 to get our food. The couple that was seated when we were managed to order, eat, and leave before our food arrived. My wife enjoyed her hanger steak, but my skirt steak was overcooked and lacked seasoning and the chicken in my mole enchilada was so dry I swear it might have been canned. Nice location with outdoor seating, but I would avoid given the poor service and high prices.

Came here three times and all great experiences. The salsa is best I've ever had, drinks were good. Food overall a 3 out of 5 but atmosphere, drinks, salsa bumps up the experience. Not sure why they charge extra for hot sauce? I wasn't thrilled about the sauce anyway and I don't find that there's a need to charge a fee for. Good otherwise
