Well after reading the reviews here I thought give it try. I don't understand why this place have good reviews. Really people here are rude. Example: I got to the register the girl with weird color hair just looked at me (huh). I said "Hello". she just looked at me.....etc. I ordered grilled cheese (which is the simplest sandwich). The bread was really hard, very salty, and greasy. I don't know why they added extra salt on top of the bread. Do you guys know that cheese is salty anyway? have u tasted a piece of cheese ever? oh well...at so many levels this place failed. I won't be going back.

By far the best lunch spot in Uptown / Downtown Oakland. The menu changes weekly and focuses on house-cured meats, but always takes care to offer interesting, delicious vegetarian choices as well. The flavors are savory and well curated, ingredients top-notch, and portions on the just-right-to-generous side. I particularly love the breakfast salad, a huge pile of lightly dressed greens with olive oil poached eggs and a side of potatoes. It's hipsterific for sure, but the folks running the place are super nice and always make an effort to please. Shout out to Crystal (whose name I don't know how to spell) for running a tight ship and for going out of her way to accommodate my weird allergies. The lady's got a heart of gold. Prices are on the high side for lunch, but I feel they match the quality. Mega-bonus points for being open on Saturdays. Looking forward to a future of Sundays, I hope.

With one of the more adventurous menus in town, Stag's is a great regular addition to your breakfast or lunch roster. Items change on a regular basis so the selection stays interesting, even if some of the recipes are real head-scratchers (does everything need peperoncinos?). Very few items disappointment and most are winners, but don't be afraid to take a look at what others are bringing away from the server counter before ordering. An always-on-the-menu $6 grilled cheese is a trusty backup when in doubt. Great brewed and iced coffees round out the flavorful fun and the crew can be charming when not overrun. A really great artisanal breakfast and lunch spot in the thriving Uptown Oakland area. Very busy at peak times so go early (or late).

Our go-to post Lake Merritt run breakfast spot. Definitely hipsterrific, it's not too busy first thing on a Saturday morning and I don't have to stand in a winding line (like at Beauty's) to get my everything bagel with smoked trout. Mochas are on point. Only reason why it's not 5 stars is it's not the most affordable breakfast option. Breakfast for two with beverages ran me $33 after tip. Still, we left very satisfied and will be back!

Ever heard that saying, "Looks great on paper," that's how I feel about this place. My buddy D wanted to come here, so here we are, thankfully beating the lunch rush. Ordered the tea chicken bahn mi, and man I did not like it. I actually sent it back since it was drenched in hot sauce, the dark meat chicken was dry and the bread was super hard. They seemed reluctant to fix anything and were chatting amongst themselves about why I didn't like it. So then I had their beef torta sandwich. Even worse. They decided to screw me over by adding tons of jalapeño and hot sauce even though I told them not to add it. The beef torta was chewy and overcooked. Man, it sucked. Oh, and for the beef torta they didn't give me that little side salad that the sandwiches come with. And for $15, that's NOT chump change. Lots of attitude, crappy $15 sandwiches!

I'm usually motivated to write a review when my experience is either terrific or horrible. While the previous two times I've eaten at Stag were meh edible, today's meal will probably be my last one there. My first two choices were not available, OK. Then the cashier (owner?) talked to patron in front of me slowly and loudly presumably because she was in a wheelchair. I'm sure she was just trying to be nice, OK. Finally, my potatoes were half raw. Definitely not OK.

Sandwich quality here is not strong enough to warrant a $10+ price tag. Some details on what didn't work: -unwilling to serve breakfast after noon (my top 3 menu choices were b'fast items) -used nearly an entire baguette on sandwich (ie way too bready) -big clump of avocado not placed inside sandwich...couldn't keep it inside -side salads are always nice but the sad little salad they provided looked like a few leafs of lettuce and a couple cherry tomatoes fell off the sandwich!...lettuce mildly wilted (my co-worker said "I liked the salad but I wish it was more than 3 bites") -overly salty...not sure if that was from the onions, cheese, turkey or a combination of all elements It's great that Stag's uses ingredients from ethical and often organic farms, but the price tag vs quality is not a good match. Less bread, better side salad, a couple bucks less on the price tag, less salt and more interesting flavor a would bring me back in.

Gosh, what a bummer! This place looked awesome in a trendy hipster way & smelled great. I got the Ruben pastrami & it was definitely not the best I've ever had :/. The bread was crispy on one side & super soggy on the other side & the flavor profile combos were just off :/ My husband had the lamb meatball sandwich & there was a lot of bread & not much inside, meat or sauce :/. There was a little side salad to go along with the sandwich but it wasn't that stellar either. Waaaaay too pricey for the quality we received. The atmosphere was cute & trendy & the staff was nice.

$20 for a sandwich, chips and soda! Outrageous! I had the beef brisket sandwich after I was told they couldn't modify one of the others. "Sorry, no substitutions!" The bread came all wet and soggy with this funky coffee sauce. I had to run to the bathroom to wash my hands after. It was like two extremely thin layers of meat on a huge chiabata bun...most of which was left on the plate...I don't need a bread sandwich! Yes...looks great on paper, but this is really faux food...too pretentious and expensive. And TURN THE DAMN MUSIC DOWN!!! Yeeeeessshh! Take your trendy hipster spot and get to San Francisco!

  • Taka T.

Total top quality sandwich, it is one of the best in the Bay. Their pastrami is almost as good as Wise Son's Deli in San Francisco. To me, that says a lot.

  • Sonya T.

Homemade hot sauce and homemade pickles. Yes, please. Toasty and buttery grilled cheese Sammie. Yes, please. Served with tomato jam and grain mustard. OMG, yes! New favorite lunch spot by the Oakland office. Love the atmosphere, really a hidden gem.

$12 for a sandwich? In Oakland? Are you shitting me? Since when the heck did Oakland become DC? Those were my thoughts while seeing the menu at Stag's. I wasn't in the mood to walk an extra 10 minutes to get a cheap kick ass banh mi in Chinatown, so I sucked it up and bought a Szechuan chicken bun sandwich. Well I am happy to say Oakland has not morphed into DC. That sandwich rocked my world. It was super flavorful and had legit heat, but not too much to make me want to cry. It was excellent. The side of greens also were quite nice. I'll definitely be back here next time I'm visiting. This place is legit.

I had the fake chicken salad sandwich. It was delicious, and a pretty big portion. It does get crowded sometimes during lunch. The chocolate chip cookie was just ok.

This was the first coffee spot I went to when I moved to the city. I keep returning for their breakfast sandwiches. Coffee is great too!

Nice sandwich shop. Good place for lunch. I had the Korean BBQ sandwich and my friend had a pork sandwich. We are off each other's plate, so I was able to try both. To me, the pork sandwich was better than the Korean BBQ, which is one of their specialties. The Korean BBQ was a bit too sweet. The BBQ over powered my sandwich. However, the pork sandwich seemed like the perfect blend. A salad came with the sandwiches, and that was pretty good. I think this place can easily be a 4. It just wasn't for me when I went. I would recommend eating here and letting me know what you think.

I've had Stag's Lunchette bookmarked for at least a year, but had never had an opportunity to boogie on over here. Today, that wait ended. We strolled in shortly after eleven in the morning, which appeared to be good timing since Stag's only got busier towards noon. I ordered a Mexican Coke and the Pastrami Reuben. Apparently orders are picked up from the counter, and the employees yell your name angrily until you pick up your food. I was engaged in conversation with a co-worker and didn't break away fast enough to grab my food on the first or second call, so the order guy was yelling my name like a madman. Make sure to pick up your food timely or you'll get yelled at!!! The Reuben came with a little side salad. Pretty much an afterthought to make yourself feel better about eating this sandwich. The Reuben itself was great, nice pastrami, grilled onions, dressing. The first half of the sandwich was buttery and crisp and salty. All the things that one tends to like about an amazing Reuben. The second half was a bit soggy, but was still enjoyable. Price wise, Stag's is not the best deal, $15 for a pastrami and Coke. Also, it's probably not a good idea to eat here more than a couple times a month, because despite the excellent flavor, the amount of butter and oil used on the food will put you in an early grave. That being said, I loved it!

Kick ass Rueben, solid salad, worthy lunch stop near downtown Oakland.

    (5)
  • Brian K.

Nice interior, friendly servers, but the Reuben was waaaay too spicy, they premake some of their sandwiches and the sandwich was impossible to eat without stuff getting everywhere. They were also cranking the metal on a Saturday afternoon (really should save that for after dark). If i'm going to spend $15 for a sandwich and a drink, I'd like to be able to taste the meat through the jalapeño!

  • Andrew C.

4 Stars. This place is a really good option for lunch in downtown Oakland. Sandwiches are around the ~$10 range so this might not be the place you go everyday, but it's definitely worth putting into the rotation. I am pretty confident that every you'll get here is really good quality so don't be afraid to try something new.

  • Christiana S.

Delicious salads. I got the Chicken Salad. Although it was $13, it's worth it - great vinaigrette, leafy greens, croutons, and a great amount of chicken. They even offer a Breakfast salad that sounds bomb. I was going to get it for lunch, sadly their breakfast menu ends at 10:45am. Great place for a lunch date, salad, oh! and their grilled cheese is bomb!

Eh. Space is warm but service poor with weak energy. Food on par with the service. Location is great but Staggs not so much.

  • Anna H.

Excellent food when you eat in or order in the shop. Otherwise, don't order over the phone, especially at lunch. They're slammed and almost always you get skimped or something is missing. Slightly on the pricey end but it's one of the BEST lunch spots that isn't sketchy in downtown Oakland and has great options for vegetarians/carnivores. Like I said, lunch time is slammed, always a long line and very, very hard to snag a seat around 12-1.30pm. The staff is nice, the food is always good.

  • Charles R.

Sort of underwhelming. When I asked for a bagel at lunchtime the server practically snorted with disdain. What a monster I must be, trying to order a breakfast item past noon! So instead I had salad with a couple of pieces of smoked trout. The fish was well smoked, but the greens a bit coarse and the dressing too vinegary. I saw a few sandwiches I might have eaten, and one tall grim-looking woman with some ink on her neck who was attacking a plate with equal portions of kale salad and some sort of greasy-looking quinoa. I suppose that passes for a meal with some folk nowadays. Gluten-free, but good lord. Not a very pleasant group of employees and your typical uptown crowd of lumbersexuals, oddly pierced folk, and young office workers eager to show they still got it, jobs notwithstanding. You can work for the man and not lose your integrity! Whatever.

  • Scott M.

Wow, the food tastes great, but don't look at Stag's health inspection reports if you ever want to eat there again. During both their 2014 and 2015 inspections they had the same problems with vermin, employees eating in the food-preparation area, failure to keep potentially hazardous food at safe a temperature, and a variety of structural violations (plumbing, exhaust hoods, etc.).

Really good, spicy jerk chicken sandwich - and pretty good sized, too! Kind of pricy, but worth it. Atmosphere is really nice, very hipster.

The spreading popularity of smoked trout in America pleases me. We're moving on to fishier smoked fishes and it's a good thing. I eagerly await the day for smoked sturgeon to become a thing here. Anyways, I got the smoked trout open bagel sandwich dealie. Good trout, good cheese, good bagel, all in good portions.

  • Zoe S.

Sandwhich was a bit on the pricey side at 12$ but it didn't disappoint! The jerk chicken was delicious and spicey. Scarfed it down. The side salad was surprisingly tasty. Not sure what dressing they put on it. I'd come back again .

  • Jessica W.

Best pastrami sandwich I've ever had. Everything from the bread to the meat to the sauerkraut was amazing and obviously very high quality. The side salad was the perfect compliment to the meaty and cheesy and melty deliciousness. Can't wait to try more of their sandwiches!

  • Carolina S.

The food of your dreams! The brioche bun was so soft and buttery. The egg sandwich with arugula and white melting cheese was sublime. The coffee was exceptional. The staff was friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was so hip. Overall, great place to find a satisfying meal.

I always have wonderful service from all of the employees at Stag's. Whether I'm grabbing a coffee or stopping by for lunch, always excellent service and great lunch items! I'm a professional in the area and don't get a "hipster" vibe like some others describe. It is family friendly, community-oriented, open minded and progressive business- a model for other restaurants that want to do business in Oakland. Thanks Stags!

So lovely - will definitely come again. Had an amazing breakfast with scrambled eggs, bagel and greens and added sausage. I love a spicy handmade sausage patty and this definitely delivered. God bless hangover food...freakin' ambrosia. The coffee was strong and earthy tasting which also helped resurrect me. I had a bite of my friend's yogurt which they make in-house, so amazing - tangy and creamy with some granola and fruit. I could bathe in that stuff!! I loved the aesthetic and the vibe, very chill and friendly. I highly recommend! Thanks Stag's!! xoxo

A retired chef friend and I like to check out places for lunch. I looked up Stag's offerings of the day on Facebook, and made a list of sanwiches to take out for a crew of us to enjoy. It didn't go well. My first encounter when placing my order was of the "I really don't care if you're here or not" variety. Ok. I waited a long time-- over 30 min. for a multiple sandwich order (2 toasted cheese, pulled pork, veggie tartine, pastrami, and a soup). No drinks. When I picked up my order, I did ask about the delay and was told it was because of the soup and the pastrami. I looked away for a few moments to gather up the two bags, and when I looked back the cook was mocking me, making fun of me to a colleague standing behind me!! I know this because she immediately stopped when I looked at her. Well done Stag's!!!! Food was greasy, sloppily thrown together, no chutney on the two toasted cheese sandos. And there were only two customers in the shop when I came in. Hey Mr. Stag--you need to hire at least high school-age staff, junior high just doesn't cut it.

What a great lunch spot! The couple of times I have been here were right on sandwich point! The employees are always cool and welcoming. Tables are clean and decor is warming. The pairing of the bread is always perfect with the goods and very fresh. My food partner and I shared all sandwiches to get our full taste on. The sauce they have on the tables is good if you want a kick on your taste buds. Just remember they close at 3pm. Have yet to try the breakfast there. Next time stags, next time!

Errr... Really? :/ Long wait, there was no one in line in front of us but they were very busy with other orders, I think we hit them right at a weak spot or somethin. We waited about five minutes to have our order taken and the person who took our orders was VERY slow, it took several minutes for her to get the orders in....Eh. My companion got the quiche frittata thing (she said it was good) and I got the rare roast beef sandwich with salad. We took our food out to lake Merritt and ate there, we both got chai and that was good! I was very VERY unhappy with my sandwich. I LOVE horseradish and mustard, and strong at that! but holy crap, I bit into it and it splooged all over and nearly burned my face off with how strong it was, and how MUCH there was. I cannot believe this is the standard for a sandwich?... Whatever it was was all over my salad too, way too strong to eat. I took the sandwich apart to try and scrape the stuff off the bun but it just wasn't happening. I ended up eating the roast beef out of the thing with my fork, it was good roast beef but like, no, not 14 dollars of roast beef. :/ so disappointed...

depending on when you go service is REALLY slow. this new staff is not friendly nor do they pay attention to detail. The guy gave me the wrong size coffee, and when I asked the female behind the counter if the to-go box on the counter was mine she replied "what?", I asked her again and she said it was for another customer. luckily the woman who I normally see when I come in happened to be standing there and she saw that it was mine and gave me my food. she's a true gem and the only reason I haven't stopped coming to Stags. I love the food but the inconsistency with the quality of the staff is a bit off putting. I never know what type of customer service I'm going to get. perhaps I'll just start checking to see if my "regular" lady is there and if not go elsewhere. I can't pay to be treated rudely by staff.

Thursday, 11:30AM. Quickie: +Delicious food +Friendly service +Clean +Thematic layout +Tunes +Hot sauce options (clearly marked) And then...? Beat the line. Go early. Constructive talk: *Do y'all compost? *Option for add-on (e.g., avocados) past breakfast ********** Stuffed my face in: 1. Pastrami (double up) +Meat is tender, full of flavor 2. Roast beef +Fine texture, cheese is a nice addition

I don't know what hipster is but I know good if you don't ask you won't get it a sandwich or anything like you want. I ask no matter where I go so won't be disappointed, MAN UP ASK FOR A EGG OR EXTRA CHEESE OR BACON what can any place say but NO..AWESOME!!

Reviewing Stag's Lunchette presents a moral dilemma, which is this: I'm not a sandwich lover. I'm a salad freak. So how do I review a basically all-sandwich restaurant? This is tricky. Salad bias aside, I can put myself in a sando fanatics shoes and say, HECK YEAH, Stag's is the jam. Their combos are insanely gourmet, perfectly complex, and uber crave-able. If only they could put those fillings on a salad instead! Take for example: Tandori chicken, feta, red onion, cucumber relish, coconut cilantro mint sauce, greens, and garlic aioli. Delicata squash panini with chèvre leek sauce, grilled onions, and arugula. Crab cakes with fried pancetta, escarole, mustard sauce, and lemon zest. Amaze right?!? With most sammies, I do skip the bread. It's always so cumbersome. But I must say, Stags bread is super well-integrated, like a blanket around the sandwiches. Don't you hate biting into a hefty roll and having all your sandwich fillings squeeze out? Stags bread is light and soft enough to support the fillins. Nicely done. I should add, they DO have salads. Usually only 2 types, but it's something for the carb-o-phobes. The space is tiny and gets absolutely packed during the lunch hour, but wise fans come early, around 11, to bring their goods back to the office. If you stay and eat, there are about 10 small tables (good for groups of 2-3), and practically everything is self-serve: the water, utensils, and your food (when they call your name). So, if I were a sandwich lover, I'd be hooked on Stags. Like every other Oaklander I know.

Consistently good. I love treating myself to a sandwich here. Their Reuben is consistently good, but sometimes they'll have a kimchi pork sandwich on the menu and i have to get that. Some people think "sandwich, so what?" Everything about this sandwich is of high quality ingredients and curated with flavors and textures in mind. The crunch of the bread, flavor of meat/sauce, ratio of sandwich fillings is thought through here. Yes, it's a little pricey for a sandwich, but it's really one of the best sandwiches I've had. Gets crowded during the weekday lunch rush (12ish-1ish). Salads and also quite good as well.

Walking distance from the lake ! Very clean bathroom :-) personable staff! They didn't rush us even though they closed. I tried the grilled cheese sandwich and it was so good and flavorful ( some grilled cheese are bland and empty)! The bread had salt sprinkles on it and reminded me of a wetzel pretzel it was so good and the side salad. They ran out of bagels so I assume you should go early in the afternoon

I live 3 blocks away. This is the best breakfast in the neighborhood on Saturday mornings. The menu is simple but it is executed so well. Quality ingredients and good coffee. Their lunch is also very good. I wish they were open on Sunday's as well but humans gotta rest I guess.

Unique breakfast items along both the sweet and savory axes. They make their own applesauce, pickles, and hot sauces but leave the baking to Barron's and Starter Bakery (both winners). Cinnamon dusted hot apple cider made my morning!

I tried to order a large order for my company meeting. I contacted the manager a week in advance with no response. I called to confirm my order and pay in advance only be brushed off 4 times. I needed conformation to make sure we have food for the next day. I only received one email promising to send a menu I never received. I decided after many failed attempts and bad customer service to cancel my order and never do business with them again. Very unprofessional. Not good at large orders.

I've been putting off coming to Stag's. Sometimes I think about coming here for lunch, but then I don't want to make the trek. The I think I can grab something on my way home, but then remember they close at 3pm. This morning, on my way to work, it dawned on me. I was hungry and thinking about stopping off at Modern Coffee, but then I remembered that Stag's has breakfast! I came in and decided to get the Ham and Avocado Panini. I took it to go and I brought it into work. The sandwich itself was pretty big! I only had half and was already feeling full. I ended up eating most of it because it wouldn't hold up as leftovers, especially since it was topped with a poached egg. I didn't even touch the salad. I shall be back.

Holy cow. I'm on a low sodium diet, but cannot give up lunch here twice a week. The crabcake sandwich was purely amazing. Spicy, filling and huge. I know crabcakes around the bay area can be small, but seriously they put TWO good sized cakes on a huge sandwich with salad for $13 Easily north of $20 in downtown SF and a line out the door. Tuesday tried the parmesan crusted chicken thigh sandwich, another great sandwich. Pretty much go for anything chicken here and specialty's like the crabcake. Whoever reviewed the egg salad, you ordered the wrong item.

looooove that this is right below my office :) the grilled cheese is OFF THE HOOK and would recommend it to anyone! I usually get the breakfast sandwich and potatoes in the morning, never disappoints. staff is always super friendly. sometimes the wait can be long, but that's because they are making everything fresh!

Up until now, my favorite reuben sandwich was from Wise Sons in SF. That one sets a very high bar. But, I'm pretty sure I just found a reuben that beats it here at Stag's! It was phenomenally good. Mouth watering. I'll have to return to try some more sandwiches on the menu. They all look very promising. I really like the dark wooden decor and vibe of the place too. It's a perfect place for lunch on a weekday or Saturday. But, I really wish they were open Sundays too!

Food was delicious, but the tragic rock and misanthropic, depressive hipsters behind the counter made for a unpleasant experience.

Artisan quality sandwiches is what they do and they do it well. I am a huge sandwich fan. For me it is not about size it is all about taste and quality. Sure, most of the sandwiches are $10 and over but once you bite into it the price doesn't matter. I'm not alone here Hubs and I came in about 11:45 right before they got ambushed by many hungry people. The line was almost out of the door at one point. It is a quaint small place to grab a meal or take out. Clean, organized with friendly staff. Order and pay at the register then wait for your number to be called. Since we arrived early there was plenty of seating. I stalked their FB page, saw the menu for this week 6/17 and fell in lust with the smoked pork and peach sandwich ($10.) Hubs ordered the chipotle steak torta ($11.) and we shared the kale salad ($3.) that Hubs recommended from a previous trip. Our total was $24. the chick at the counter rang it up on the ipad, accepted my credit card and gave me our serving of kale salad. About 10 mins. later our number was called. The food looked so good Hubs had to remind me to take pictures before setting my paws on it. The pork loin was lean and juicy with melted mozzarella cheese, thinly sliced peaches on crunchy Semifreddis foccia bread. A true piece of work. I had a bite of the steak torta. It was stuffed with meat, creamy sauce, chunks of avocado and felt like it weighed a couple of pounds. Super good flavor combos for both sandwiches. The kale salad was good with beans and a light vinaigrette dressing. That lust turned into love, Stag's you got it going on!

Hands down best sandwiches in the Bay Area. Bread is perfect. Not overstuffed (or understuffed). Quality ingredients and interesting combinations. Great selection of veggie- and vegan-friendly options, especially the veggie reuben and grilled cheese! The menu changes often, so you won't get bored if you make this your usual sandwich spot. I recently had a good sandwich with a cauliflower-chevre patty, but now they're serving a soy-based faux-tuna melt with flageolet beans! Sandwiches come with nice little simple side salads too. Great for lunch or breakfast. Breakfast sandwiches are awesome, coffee is good, and they have some breakfast pastries (morning buns!) Seating is a little on the scant side, but turnover is relatively quick. Ambiance is lovely - modern/hipster-rustic, but not trying too hard. Music is really good and service is friendly and quick. I just wish they were open on Sundays!

This place is crazy good. If I could afford to come here everyday I would. I'm glad they change up their menu every week, or I'd likely get stuck ordering the same awesome thing every time. The Pork anything sandwiches are usually pretty great. Chicken was good, but pork certainly had more flavor. And the spicy sauce is fantastic. So glad I found this place!

I'm getting embarrassed because the staff here are starting to know me by name. I live in the neighborhood and I am so thankful for this place. Delicious food, yummy chai tea lattes, and all within walking distance. Their sandwiches at lunch are great, but my favorite is the breakfast sandwich with avocado added. SO good. The staff are friendly and quick. Overall, a great place for a bite.

Hi, part of my reason for this poor review really should be my fault. You see, I did not choose the best sandwich in which to evaluate this place. Actually I went quite ambitious, and for some wild & wacky reason, decided to get the egg salad and anchovy sandwich. Yeah, that is right, anchovy's! Since this is the only sandwich that I have had here, that is what my review is based upon, so take it with a grain of salt if you like. Suffice to say, the sandwich was NASTY! The egg salad part wasn't bad but then they just randomly plopped some large arse nasty anchioves on top. Not good, not tasty, difficult to digest. Maybe if you were a baby penguin receiving this sandwich regurgitated from your penguin mother it would taste good to you. I am not a baby penguin. On top of that, the price was $12. $12 for a lunch sandwich, no thanks! Why go here when you can go to Ike's and get a huge / super tasty sandwich for $9.99? It doesn't make any sense to me. I think the Hipsters like this place, and perhaps that is why they can get away with their pricing strategy. Maybe their other sandwiches are tasty, but I doubt they are worth the price. On a positive note, the small salad that came with the sandwich was good, as was the dressing. Save your time and roll to Ike's, infinitely better sandwiches in downtown Oakland !

It's okay! Had the eggplant egg sandwich. It was yummy. Bursting with flavor. The side salad was good as well but a bit overdressed. (Why can't the default by dressing on the SIDE. Why is the default always dressed? Then if you forget to ask for it on the side, you end up with drenchy greens!) E had the pastrami that yelpers raved about. It was a bit dry.. and the bread was sort of soggy. Okay. So. Everything DOES taste good! Worth the 2-digit prices? I kept playing it off as yes. but then E made a point that there are AMAZING sandwich places out there. And the prices are a few dollars less. I guess those few dollars moves this from an unreserved "I'm a fan!" to.. it's "okay." Would I come again? Sure, if i'm in the area. Would I go out of my way to come here? nah.

Great coffee. Love the branding. Atmosphere is perfect for a quick low pro bite. Take clients here, they'll be impressed ! Plus they have Starter Bakery pastries. Thanks Crystal for taking my order this morning :-)

We're always looking to try new places and this is a good place for lunch, lines get long but move quickly. There are tables with stools to sit on but on a warm sunny day like today, it was pretty warm inside. We ordered the reuben sandwich, beef bolognese sandwich, lamb sandwich and chicken salad which was very tasty. We all enjoyed our lunches and there was nothing left on the plate!

Excellent sandwiches made with great products. You'll pay for the quality, but it is worth the treat. Their breakfast sandwiches and bagels are pretty good too. The line can get pretty long and chaotic inside, but be patient. It moves, and the cooks work quick to get everything out. I've been there several times, and I haven't had anything I didn't enjoy. I had one underwhelming salad side, but overall this place is great. Cheers

I absolutely fuckin love this place! Trying to find a place to eat during lunch just walking around while I was lookin for an apartment. I stumbled upon this place by accident. Walked by then stopped and noticed a huge line. I love sandwiches and this place was the perfect spot. I got their pastrami and my mom got the ham, cheese and sausage sandwich. Both come with a side of greens. We also got a side of beet salad and roasted egg plants. Everything we had was magical. Everything was obviously fresh. The sandwiches were to die for, we split each so we could share and try both sandwiches. The sausage were almost like meat balls. Now that sandwich is bombbbbb.com !! The bread is so good. The pastrami was awesome as well. The beets were delicious and the signed said "can't BEET Friday". There are tons of people trying to grab lunch here since they're usually only open from 8 or 9am to 2-3pm. When seein long lines at places I somewhat hesitate like this is some hype place where I'm going to get disappointed?! No this place is fuckin legit. Small amount of seating, so if you plan on eating here with people, I recommend someone order and someone else keep an eye out for a table and swoop. Follow them on facebook and they usually will post their specials for the day or week and will post their menus! I'll be back Stag's Lunchette!

I feel so lucky to have Stag's in my neighborhood. I've never been disappointed by their food and their customer service is excellent. I'm always greeted with a smile and appreciate their patience with me as I mull over the menu, trying to decide which delicious meal to eat. Their food is always fresh and oh so tasty. There's ample seating although it gets very busy here during lunch time. They do their best to be efficient with getting you your food.

Almost embarrassed that it took me so long to find this place given that I live only a few blocks away. They always have a couple veggie options and the grilled cheese with tomato jam is just fantastic. Even at lunchtime I've never waited longer than a few minutes (almost as important to me as the quality) and the service is always friendly.

Everything here is amazing. They have baked goods from starter bakery in San Francisco. The menu changes daily and they house make many things, including the pancetta and sauerkraut.

A little worried that I actually go here too often. When I worked closer, I would get the pastrami reuben at least once a week. The bread, cheese, and meat are all spot on (if not a little messy to eat) and I love the special hot sauce they make. The small side salad is also a nice bit a roughage after the heaviness of the sandwich. Now that I work farther away, I primarily come here for breakfast on Saturdays (breakfast all day). Living in downtown Oakland means very few places stay open past work hours, but the Stag is open on Saturday mornings for me to get a delicious breakfast sandwich (poached egg, arugula, aioli, and bacon on brioche bun) along with some very good coffee. The staff is friendly and efficient, I've never waited very long and always get free coffee refills. A welcome addition to my weekend routine.

Came here around 130 on Saturday. They were sold out of lots of items. Ended up ordering an egg sandwich which was pretty tasty. Will try to come back and try more on the menu.

Breakfast sandwich is to die for , nothing changes your morning with a poached egg squeeze between two yummy buns and some cheese to soak all that goodness! The side of fingerling potatoes are godly and crispy! The ham and Avocado is crispy on outside oozing with cheddar and Avocado creates a nice smooth texture to balance the crispyness. It's like update of ham and cheese sandwich for adults. I will say however they are not friendliest when it comes to customer service. It's more like : 1) order your food, 2) here take it I yelled for your name , 3) sit anywhere I guess even though some tables may look clean, 4) ever looking glares and mugs. Workers don't look happy working there. I do adore the tables they put next against windows so you can see people walking by. Sauces they have on the tables are the red and yellow one. The red one is the hot sauce with a Spicer and more vinger taste (like Tabasco) and the yellow sauce is a tangy sweeten sauce to mellow down your meal. I'll come back to get my morning grub on with breakfast menu ~also the organic oj is delish!

This place is the BOMB!!! Great menu that gets changed weekly with a couple staples that you can't go wrong with. I just want to know when those lamb sliders are back on the menu because that might be one of the best things I've eaten!

No doubt, the food here is absolutely, positively awesomesauce (and so are the sauces). I really wanted to love it, but after paying $14.17 for a SALAD, that is something I just cannot convince myself to do. Was the salad awesome? Yes, definitely. The smoked trout was in the top tier of my experience. Was it worth it? No, not for the kind of to-go lunchette vibe they're trying to cultivate. I'd consider crawling back if they brought the food to your table instead of having you pick it up at the back counter. At these prices, they can afford to class it up one step above chipotle.

Hidden gem! My buddy took me here because he loves this spot. It's a really nice looking space with the clean wood inside. You order in the front and my go to is the Pastrami reuben. The pastrami was really juicy and the bread pretty soft. It was a solid sandwich and I hope this place gets more love. It doesn't have a lot of seating so come early! Recommendation : Pastrami reuben

Try finding a good spot to have lunch in Downtown Oakland on a Saturday. I dare you. So glad I work in the SF FiDi. After 4 prior attempts, my friend & I found this place. Delicious salads & sandwiches, we were rewarded. I had the Cubanito, a very good sandwich. Though most items run $10, they're delicious enough to warrant the price. Smaller than I'd ideally like though. Not the most spacious place ever--I can see this place being packed during the week--but I lucked out by coming on a Saturday. I'll definitely be back.

1/30 - Wow. I felt blessed to have one of their specials, Crab Roll. First time here today. Came around 11:30am. Thank goodness it wasn't sold out. The cashier told me they were sold out on the crab rolls within an hour yesterday. I'm sure it did, because this crab roll is delicious! Yum...a squeeze of lemon juice on top of their savory garlic butter lemony aioli sauce, good chunks of dungeness crab on their lightly toasted brioche with the right amount of lettuce. It came with a small side of cole slaw. I left satisfied and full. Sleepy at work now. Garlic breath still lingers throughout my work day. Even a piece of gum did not help at all, hehe. I recommend this place for lunch. People are friendly and nice. Will be back tomorrow :) 2/1 - Came back again for the crab roll and a grilled cheese sandwich. Just gotta have it again. This time I took it to go and surprised my boyfriend with the crab roll. He loved it. I had the grill cheese and it was yummy as well. Good portions. I like this place now. I'm sure the other sandwiches are good here too. Will make it a regular lunch spot.

I really enjoyed this hidden gem. I stumbled on to it just grabbing a late breakfast with one of my friends. I had some kind of pork sandwich but not the Korean BBQ one. It was like a pork philly or something. It was really good. Light enough not to weigh me down all day but heavy enough to hit the spot. There were quite a few items on the menu that were original. The flavor combinations appeared well thought out and complimented each other nicely. Even typical dishes had original twists, like the grilled cheese sandwich. They've definitely got the flavor but I'd eat here again just to see what creative flavor combinations they have on the menu for the day if nothing else.

Went there for breakfast and was not disappointed. Not much of a breakfast menu that I saw but was told they have bagel egg sandwiches and egg sandwiches. Bought an egg sandwich with beacon and greens, which was really good. It came with potatoes and this white garlic mayo sauce that I mixed with there hot sauce which was amazing together. The portions aren't that big but enough to fill you up to start the morning right. Overall I enjoyed this place and am looking forward to trying something off the lunch menu.

I have gone hear a couple times for lunch. I like their hot sandwiches. Even though it will have a line, the line moves pretty quickly. The salads are fancy lunch salads with healthy ingredients. I like that it isn't just a garden salad. I have found my self taking a side of beet salad because it looked good.

Of course I went back today and brought someone with me so they too can indulge in all the goodness that Stag has to offer. Today I scarfed down the Steak with Chimichurri sandwich..smh BOMB! FOODIE EXPLOSION in MAH MOUF! (yes mouth with an "f" and not "th" it's that good!) My lunch date had the Grill Cheese with Tomato Jam and yet another taste bud EXPLOSION! I'm not sure what they put in their food besides love but whatever it is DON'T STOP!! #fatkid #foodie #advice is to - GO TO STAG!! CHEERS! :) PS Yesterdays Rueben was a Pastrami and not Procetta (sp?)... haha!

While I usually choose one of the rotating menu items, today I opted for their classic pastrami reuben. This little meaty sandwich from above changed my life and deserves a 5 star review. I am pregnant and rightfully (or wrongfully??) eat whatever I want and am able to distinguish between "worth it" and "not worth it" indulgences. Hands down, this delicious gem was the best thing I have indulged in so far.

So, I took up the offer to try another sandwich and ordered the leg of lamb. It was good. The meat was moist and cooked nicely, the sandwich flavors worked together, and it was well seasoned. I'm still not sure if I will ever be able to order the grilled cheese again, but I'll definitely be trying their other sandwiches! I forgot to mention this in the last review, but each sandwich comes with a little side salad, which has been consistently yummy.

In regards to my review, I didn't write it after one bad sandwich, this was after repeated mediocre meals. Regarding pricing, anyone can look at the old menus posted on your FB page to see the price changes. If your prices have gone down very recently, great! Also, when I mentioned "quality," I should have been more specific. The ingredients seem to be unchanged, but the actual making of the sandwich seems to have changed for the worse. The last few times I went, the sandwiches were poorly constructed or components were overcooked. I used to come by a few times a week, so my comments were as neighborhood fan who was bummed to see a downturn. I'll probably come back at some point, I'm just providing some feedback about my experiences there lately.

Legit reuben. Homemade sourdough, strong mustard and spices. I overheard the girl say they change their menu every week, Saturday all day brunch. Not a whole lot of seating. Certainly an Oakland jewel.

Damn. It's like walking into a log cabin, except they got dope sandwiches. The Reuben is one of the best on the area. Not a ton of meat like places back in NYC, but delicious and savory. They also have barons bagels...which are great. A nice selection of hot sauces, including a orange juice and yam based one. I love what they do, what they stand for, and the quality of the meats.

Stag's is a pretty new spot in downtown (uptown?) Oakland serving up a handful of sandwiches that rotate daily with things like Pulled Pork, Pastrami, Veggie Rueben, Tofu, and Meatball, along with a salad, a few sides (tater salad), and some more breakfasty pastries. I was hoping for Porchetta that I saw in a review, but it was not to be and went with Pastrami ($9 or $10?) plus one house cured pickle ($1). I munched on the pickle ( yelp.com/biz_photos/Knfo… ) while waiting for my sandwich and was surprised that it was packing some heat! Not a bad thing at all, but seemed like they should mention this for the spice adverse. It also lacked something in the crunch department. The sandwich comes with a small salad of mixed greens and a couple of cherry tomatoes ( yelp.com/biz_photos/Knfo… ). Salad seemed like it was from an earlier dressed batch or didn't travel well with the warm sandwich; I didn't finish it. The sandwich itself also had some kick from a spicy, creamy, orange-ish sauce along with nice tartness from the housemade kraut. I think I read they cure and smoke their own pastrami. This was a moderately fatty cut with not much smokiness to it. It looked decently stuffed with meat, but the meat was concentrated in the center of the sandwich and tapered dramatically to the edges. Regardless of the uneven meat distribution, quality ingredients begets a quality sandwich. If only Stag's was in Montclair, minutes from my house.

Loved Stag's and everything about it (maybe except the lack seating). The sandwiches are a treat! If you are in a mood for grilled cheese, this is the place to be. Most sandwiches are prices around $12 and are pretty sizable. I'm 6'4" and fills me up pretty well, no complains there! My lovely lady and I tried once ordering a sandwich with a side of grilled cheese sandwich (yes, I know...) and it ended up being way to much food for us to handle... but soooo delicious!

Great service. Sandwiches are incredible. Could use more veggie options, but the veggie reuben was decadent as all get out. Got a nice "Roadhouse" reference when they asked for my name... and I really appreciate that sorta thing. Seriously though, food is great. It gets very busy during lunch time, so hop over a little earlier and dig in!

TREAT YO SELF! This is an excellent lunch destination. I have had a range of sandwiches from their ever-evolving menu, and have never been disappointed. The staff is friendly and helpful. It is a bit expensive, but is usually large portions. They really blend incredible flavors, and every dish is very unique. Seating can be challenging during the lunch hour, but usually something opens up pretty quickly. Having a long week? Head to Stag's, they will feed you an excellent lunch that will put a spring in your step!

I've been feeling like Captain Ahab from Moby Dick with Stag's. It assumed white whale status when I realized that I was never in this area during their business hours. I never wanted to be a maniacal and tyrannical sea captain, nor did I want to kill Stag's-I just wanted to eat it! Last Saturday my boyfriend and I were strolling down the street and I saw the door to Stag's wide open and a few happy faces inside. He's had the same monomaniacal desire to eat there as well, probably even more so, because it's in his neighborhood. We were told that they just recently opened on Saturdays but were worried about the light foot traffic. Go there! Keep it open! For Moby's sake (and ours). We weren't very hungry, but felt that we must seize this providential encounter. The reuben-get it! Eat it! I'm not good at describing meat, but it's peppery, salted just so, and delicious. The bread was divine-seemed atypical for a reuben but I'm no reuben expert. Just get it, or something else and tell me what it is and why I should skip the reuben next time. Very cool hunting lodge interior, way better food than you normally get in a lodge, and now open for people who don't work in the area. Harpoon me happy.

Stag's lives up to the hipster hype. Lunch: $10 for the knockout pastrami sandwich. Breakfast: $6 egg bagel sandwich, or my favorite: $8 trout bagel plate with a *huge* chunk of delicious smoked trout. Great coffee from Roastco, both drip and espresso. Question: How on earth will I be able to kick my afternoon latte habit when I work just 2 blocks from Stag's?? Answer: I won't... :)

I've been here twice. First time ordered the breakfast sandwich with sausage. Very good sausage ! Egg perfectly cooked and runny. Fingerling potatoes on point. Not much seating but everyone eats pretty quickly then leaves so if you wait a little you'll get a seat. Second time ordered the simple breakfast. Different sausage this time, but I like how they change it up! Overall a good, simple, quick spot!

What I ate: BLT, pickle Visit date: September 25, 2012 First time? Yes. So hip. So trendy. So good. Their BLT satisfied my salt craving for the day, but I think I will dedicate this review to the homemade pickle. This is by far the best pickle I've ever had. They put grape leaves in the brine which made me think of dolmas (which I love!!) when I was eating the pickle. I can't wait to stop by and grab another. Pickles are $1 and well worth the wait in line! Also good to note: Their sandwich selection changes and, as far as I know, they don't post it online anywhere. Just come hungry for meat! AND PICKLES!!

We happened upon this lunch spot when the place we tried to go to wasn't open any longer. Let's say, this was a killer find. Outrageous sandwiches - tons of flavor, killer bread and the pork was ultra moist. The service was really pleasant, and the atmosphere was welcoming. Definitely will be back to try out those olive oil poached eggs for breakfast!

Hot damn. Best veggie melt ever! I forgot to bring lunch to work yesterday, and that was the best bout of forgetfulness ever! I had heard good things about Stag's grilled cheese, so I wanted to check it out myself. The place is kinda shi shi New American, dark with wooden decor and hipsters abound. It's also pretty expensive for lunch, with the average sammich costing around $10 (except for the grilled cheese, which was $5). I generally like getting veggie sammiches at sammich joints, so I ordered the veggie melt. It came with non-GMO veggie nuggets, arugula, lettuce I think, tomatoes, caramelized onions, melted cheese (mozzarella?), and some type of delicious herby paste. The sammich was toasted like a panini, hot and fresh. Every single bite was absolutely delicious and mind-blowing. Those little heavenly nuggets were also spectacular! Loved every single bite, and when I was finished, I was pretty damn full and excited to eat it again in the future. I think their menu changes pretty often, so this amazing sammich might not necessarily be on the menu if you go. But, if you do, definitely try it out. Amazing veggie sammich! Note, however, that it is quite pricy for lunch: $10.90 for the sammich and a small side of mixed greens. Worth it, though, if you decide to take a day to Treat Yo' Self like they do on Parks and Rec!

Tried this deli for the first time; I had the smoked trout bagel plate and my husband had the lamb sandwich. Both were great, and we'll be back often. Highlights for me were the picked onion garnish for the trout and the Barons bagel. Small space, as others have noted, but our orders were ready in less than 10 minutes, and we found seating at the counter along the wall.

I haven't completely abandoned eating furry creatures yet, but the Veggie Reuben from Stag's could bring me close. Yum, it was good. Meaty seasoned tofu, very similar to yuba in my opinion and the housemade kraut, amazing. To make it a bit healthier next time, I would prob just have them not grill and butter the bread. All the sandos have some lightly dressed mixed greens on the side. The pastrami was good, but I like the thinnly shaved stuff at Jewish delis. LOVED the sides, the brussels sprouts were light and loved the bits of parm. Excellent potato salad, fresh and not mayo-y. The pastries are from Starter Bakery in West Oakland and they use all organic ingredients. Everything was satisfying, flavorful and ingredient driven.

Great atmosphere, creative menu. Execution was great, as were the flavors. Minus one star for lack of alcoholic options and I felt the side salad that came with my sandwich was an afterthought, and not properly seasoned...

Yeah, I just dropped $17 on a tri-tip sandwich today (w/ tip - no drink or sides). Was it delicious? Obviously. Am I a chump? Maybe. Afraid I might break the bank and become a regular here since it's so close to work. Definitely a place I'd consider taking out-of-towners to for lunch, and that's saying a lot.

I went to this place on a Saturday for lunch. I first went to Jack London Square first to pick up my parents from the local sail boat show and told them about this sandwich shop in Oakland that had good reviews. Pulled up on 17th street and notice the area was kind of run down and the guy parked in front of me as I pulled up was getting nervous while he rolls up his joint in front of the smoke shop. We walked down to Stag's and notice the hanging deer sign right away and went inside. I really like how the place looks. Big wooden farm door with black steel hinges and handle. I was really digging the looks of this place that there was no line when we entered to order our sandwiches. Plenty of seating and I like the two sauces they provide on the table where you eat. I had the crab cake sandwich and it was ok. Good but nothing special. But I had a taste of their pastrami reuben and that was delicious. It doesn't have a hickory smoke flavor that can turn down some people and it was most/tender. It's cool that they change their menu every week so that you have something new to try every time you visit.

Had been wanting to try this spot for a few months and I was in the neighborhood at breakfast time one day this week so jumped in. I ordered and egg sandwich and although it took a while (and I was the only customer) it was quite tasty. Perfectly cooked bacon, good egg and bread - side of aioli and some arugula. I'd give the food a solid 4 stars. As someone with some mobility issues I found the seating very uncomfortable. The only option is bar stools at tables. Wish there was a table or two with regular chairs. I also found the people working there not particularly friendly. The two people I interacted with seemed to have much better things to do than take my order and give out my food. Might try again and get the food to go.

YUMMY DELICIOUSNESS. I had a chance to come here to grab some sandwiches to go recently and was amazed at the quality and deliciousness of the sandwiches as well as the simplicity. I enjoy a sandwich in which I can see all the ingredients, and yet it's so good still that there must be some quality or mystery to the meat that is used. The whole place just reeks of goodness once you walk in. I love the setup, it looks like a quaint formal little eatery but it's more self serve. You order your sandwich (and they always have some specials of the day) as well as soup and salad if you wish, and you just wait for your order to be called. They also serve coffee, and it looked killer because the girl next to me got hers with an orange rind! I ended up getting the Mexican Tortas, the Chicken Melt and the Pastrami Reuben. I didn't have the torta but the chicken was delicious, and full of meat, they really put like two breasts in here! and the Pastrami was awesome. Flavors were soooo spot on. This is a fantastic place for lunch if you get a chance to come!

Got the chicken salad. (I forgot what its exact name was.) Service was prompt and friendly, and the place is clean and cute. That said, I thought $13 is a LOT for what we got. It was a good salad, but a $13 salad better give me a happy ending.

Stag's Lunchette is one of my favorite places in Oakland for lunch. The menu is simple, with around 4-5 artisan sandwich options daily, and usually a salad of some sort. They also offer side dishes like Brussels sprouts, potato salad, and freshly pickled pickles (a must for the Reuben). Each sandwich is served hot with a small side of greens (usually either red cabbage slaw or arrugula). I've only tried two different sandwiches on the menu including the Reuben (of course!) and a chicken sandwich but they were both absolutely delicious. If you have a protein-deficiency you can opt for double-meat on your Reuben for an additional $5. I haven't done this yet, but it's only a matter of time... Stag's also offer two homemade sauces in the flavors of "XX" and "XXX," neither of which is as intimidating as the description might suggest. They are both vinegar-based sauces and quite delicious on your sammie. As for the service, it's excellent. The cashier is always warm, friendly and smiling when I order. Stag's Lunchette is definitely doing it right.

Tried this place for the first time. Small shop with a bit of seating, but it was pretty full up at noon. I got the pastrami reuben (I am a reuben fanatic) and was very pleased! They tweak some of the elements of the reuben, but all together, it still is authentic and delicious. Will definitely be trying the grilled cheese next time!

I've only been here once so far because it's a little out of the way for me, but I had lunch here recently with a friend (who was going back for the second time in a week, I think) and I'm so glad I did. I had the pulled pork sandwich---juicy, amazing pork on a delicious bun with outrageously good slaw. AND one of the best parts was that there was no BBQ sauce on it. I love BBQ sauce, and I love pulled pork, but I like to pair them myself so I can get just the right ratio of sauce to pork (nothing worse than too much sauce, in my humble opinion). But in this case I don't even know if BBQ sauce was an option because as soon as I took my first bite I knew it was perfect the way it was. No sauce needed. Just smokey, delicious, juicy porkiness. The staff was friendly and service was fast. All in all it's a great place for lunch and I'm definitely going back.

What a nice addition to downtown Oakland. The menu is simple and the hours are breakfast and lunch only. During my winter break, my husband and I decided to give it a try. The pastrami reuben was a treat. I loved the tangy sauerkraut coupled with the fatty and flavorful meat. I understand why many of the yelp reviews talk about this sandwich. My pork slider felt light, if that's possible for a pork sandwich. Or maybe it's more my wishful post-holiday hope. The lemon-scented fresh ricotta spread and peppery arugula was a nice complement to the lightly seasoned pulled pork. There is a small breakfast menu and coffee for those who work in the downtown Oakland area.

This place continues to deliver awesome lunch food after 3 different visits! One of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I've ever had. The only thing preventing the five star rating is the price, as it gets consistently into the $16-18 range for standard lunch and drink, with not much seating room. But worth your time if you're nearby!

It is good for the healthy and vegan crown. Food was good, but not blown away by any means. Pretty good though.

Hands down, best grilled cheese I have ever had in my life. Tomato jam and some kind of bourbon soaked bacon chutney? RIDICULOUSLY GOOD. Everyone that works there is so sweet too. New fav lunch spot, holy moly, I don't think I can bring myself to order anything else.

My friend and I were looking for a quick lunch on afternoon. Came across this place, I ordered a tahini chicken sandwich and she got a grilled cheese sandwich with a fruit salad. The fruit salad had mint and pepper inside and she did not expect the taste, but was real good. The grilled cheese sandwich was amazing, it had tomato jam inside. It was great. My tahini sandwich was great, with feta, and the roasted tomato just topped it off with yumminess. I recommend this place ;)

Great lunch spot! Grilled cheese sandwich was yummy and I really enjoyed my husband's roast beef sandwich. Will definitely come again!

This is probably my favorite place to go for lunch in the area. The food is consistently good on their ever-changing menu. The one thing that stays the same on their menu, the pastrami reuben, is life-changing, if a little too heavy if I want to get work done after lunch. Their salads are definitely in the category of "salads for people who don't like salads", aka meat over some greens, and is generally my go-to. For example, their skirt steak over greens with chimichurri was amazing. This place has very few seats, and gets really hot and crowded during lunch hours, so I usually get things to-go.

The pastrami rueben was a religious experience, no joke. Great ambiance, classics playing in the background. Everything was incredibly fresh, I will make the trip from Hayward to come back.

Finally!! I've finally found an amazing sandwich shop in this area!! :) So far I've tried The Grilled Lamb and Cuban sandwich and I love both! Oh my gosh, I LOVE how the cheese melts along the edge of the Cuban sandwich - the savory flavors of the pork and crunchiness of the bread is PERFECT! You have to eat this sandwich slowly so you can savor each bite! The Grill Lamb sandwich is no ordinary sandwich - it might blow your mind! This is seriously one of the best sandwiches that I've had in a long time! The ingredients are of high quality and there are so many dimensions to this sandwich - the generous layer of grilled lamb, arugula, corn mixture, vinaigrette and special sauce! A sandwich without mayo (gross) is a sophisticated sandwich! Their Grilled Cheese Sandwich is my all time FAVORITE grilled cheese sandwich. Everything about it rings - AMAZING GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH EVER!! :D Finally, the ambiance of this restaurant is urban chic and quite lovely. The dim lighting kinda makes you want to order a second sandwich so you can sit longer...

Yes, Stag's Lunchette is where I take people with some kind of tude about Oadland... While there can be a little wobble on the usually unreal olive oil poached eggs - lunch is always beyond my already high expectations. The best thing is that the menus constantly changes, I had faux Tuna salad & I'm not even vegan - in a word AWESOME

Yes, I really am doing a 3rd review update! Today we had the Duroc meatball sandwich with pate and grilled cheese with bacon chutney. The meatball sandwich would probably be the one thing I would repeat not yet having sampled each one yet. It was really yummy and juicy and the pate added a lot of flavor to this perfect sandwich. I really like dipping the sandwiches in their xx sauce (spicy habanero yam sauce). The grilled cheese was good and the chutney wasn't anything spectacular, but overall was a really satisfying sandwich. On their FB page it listed a porchetta sandwich, but either that was a mistake or they were sold out by 12:05. Grilled Cheese $5 + $2 for bacon chutney Meatball $8 or 9 sorry, I forgot.

Stopped in for breakfast...really great service (even if it is simply order at the counter). Simple bagel sandwich with egg and cheddar and roast potatoes but tasty, fresh, and overly heavy. Not a ton of food for the money, for reasonably priced and I appreciated the balance of quality and portion in the context of the reasonable price....plus I headed to my meeting downtown happy and pleasantly full

Stag's decor is mysteriously nice/seductive. didn't see any menu on their boards 7/12 when i dropped in. for some reason they were unable to serve sammies/salads. an hour later, they said.. grabbed a joe(2) and went. -house blend of africa, south american beans -robust, semismooth, .. -drip also available. crumbs: -looking forward to the reuben. -very pleasant people, cordial, efficient, upfront. cool

Stag's is exactly as good as you'd think it is. I'd recommend going a little later than the lunch rush, since you will run into some pretty long lines right at noon, but you should also be warned that sometimes they sell out of the really popular items if you wait until too late in the day. They have a menu that rotates on a weekly basis (I think, anyway - I always make sure to check their menu online to see what's new), with some consistent, delicious standbys - like the grilled cheese. The ingredients are fresh, high quality, and combined in interesting and tasty ways. They also have excellent iced tea and a friendly, efficient staff. Seating can be iffy, so it's usually a good idea to plan a to-go order.

Hands down my favorite lunch spot in downtown Oakland. A little pricy at times, and sometimes they have a few misses, but their hits are absolutely spectacular, and will likely be some of the best sandwiches you ever have. An eggplant tartine I had their last week absolutely blew me away. Great decor (hipster wood + iron) and energetic vibe seals the deal. Tip for eating on the cheap: Get two of their hearty side salads ($3 each; often contain kale, beets, or both!) to get a delish meal for $6!

I had lunch here recently, BLAT. EXPENSIVE! Sloppily made, dry, avocado in big chunks so it slips out. Honestly it was not good. 10 dollar sandwich, 10 dollar salad( the salad Wes good but expensive). 20 dollar lunch left me very disappointed, bummed me out :-(. They are def. working folks in there and the decor and vibe are cool. But if you are charging that much for the product it must be consistent in execution and product.

Wow, the meatball sandwich with pate that I just had was SO delicious. All the flavors of the ingredients (a meatball sandwich with house made pate, pickled radishes, bread and butter Jalapenos, and ginger garlic jus) complimented each other perfectly. And it wasn't ridiculously priced at $8. I'll definitely be back for that. A big group of us from work went in today and everyone was very impressed with their orders, which is saying a lot considering they don't usually spend $8-10 on lunch and many were concerned about the prices as we headed over there. The decor is awesome with lots of reclaimed wood. Personally, I prefer a little more light, but there was enough with the natural light coming in from the front. Once you are in there for 5 mins, your eyes adjust anyway. You really feel like you're in a cabin in Tahoe... then you step out of the place and you're reminded that you're back in downtown/uptown Oakland. Service was good, but you could tell they're still working out the kinks since they just opened today or yesterday. We waited about 15 minutes for our sandwiches and we got in just before noon. We're so lucky to have this addition to our neighborhood and I can't wait to try the rest of the menu! They post their menus (hopefully daily) on their facebook page: facebook.com/STAGSLUNCHE…

Just tried this place for the first time. Had a Peruvian veggie melt and it was ridiculously good. I did misunderstand about the veggie part of the name. The description said veggie nuggets and I was thinking of vegetables cooked in a little nugget with batter because of something I'd eaten somewhere else. It was, in fact, fake chicken, which I'm guessing was made out of soy and gluten. The menu said it was GMO-free. It was totally delicious but I don't usually eat processed fake meats. I probably would order it again despite that because it was so good. The menu was great, but I wish they had two salad options. I generally don't eat much bread, but wasn't in the mood for today's salad option. The wait wasn't too bad. I'm new to working in Oakland. If this place were in SF, it'd have an insane line out the door. I think I was in and out in about 10 minutes. Nice decor, although I took mine to go. And the staff was nice--even telling newbies in front of me to ask people to share a table if there wasn't a free one. Looking forward to trying the grilled cheese with bacon chutney next.

This place has really awesome sandwiches that are always changing on a daily basis. The sandwich I had was solid, but the side of greens was more of a garnish. It's a bit on the pricey side, but ever so tasty.

Yum!! Hidden gem in Oakland. Grilled cheese with tomato jam was delish ($6). I think next time I'll try it with bacon whiskey jam... I love that the menu changes and can't wait to go back! I really wanted to try their beef stew w/ butternut squash, but they ran out by the time I got there (12:30pm). The only downside is that it's a little bit pricey for an everyday lunch option, but I would definitely come back when I want to treat myself.

I live a mostly vegetarian lifestyle (call me a fair weather friend to the animals), so they (The Global Vegetarian Council) are probably going to revoke my membership for life after this review... I'm not pregnant anymore, so there is really no excuse, but my hubby told me about a place that makes some great sandwiches and I decided I wanted to find out for myself. I went in on a Tuesday afternoon after the lunch rush and ordered the lamb sandwich (yeah, they had a tofu option, so again - no excuse). It was, hands down, the best googley moogley sammich (yup - sammich) that I have EVER had in my life... Tender, juicy, leg of lamb on soft, fresh bread... If you love lamb - heck, if you hate lamb - this sandwich will ruin you for all other sandwiches. On Wednesday I went back and got the same... And I might have gone back again on that Saturday -- who's asking? And though it is not my place to tell anyone's business, my husband - a mostly vegan individual - had the ALL bacon extravaganza and said it was the best thing he's ever eaten. To conclude, these sandwiches have ruined our lives (as "vegetarians"), AND it was worth it. It was worth it.

The food here is very, very, very good. High in quality and taste, it is definitely a culinary experience worth writing home about. However, they don't have many options that are friendly on the waistline or wallet. It's not a place that I could go to every day for those reasons, but it's definitely evolved into one of my favorite places to eat in the area.

Really nice venue. I like the atmosphere and I definitely like the people working here - so very nice. I got the egg salad sandwich and it was very good. I do wish there were more items on the lunch menu for a non-red meat, non-poultry eating person. Whatever your spin on a fish sandwich would be - I would try it. I've only been once so far, so if the lunch menu doesn't rotate, I'd likely only eat here twice a year. But I'll check it out again....

Thank you Yelp for this one. I took BART to check out this Uptown lunch spot and was blown away! The pastrami reuben I got was incredible the meat was moist, tender, with a perfect blend of spices. The bread was perfectly toasted and matched the good portion of meat in the sando. It came with a sauce that's hard to explain but I think there was a bit of mustard in it - all you need to know was that was excellent. At $10 it was a bit on the higher side - it was served with a salad - but it tasted so damn good that I have to give it a 5. I recommend not coming here or getting a to-go order on a hot day since this place gets boiling inside. I am, however, looking forward to trying the rest of the menu.

Nice atmosphere. I ordered the Sesame Tofu sandwich. This sandwich could have been amazing but a couple of things went wrong... They burnt the inside of my bread which had a bad lingering taste through out the sandwich eating process. Also, they claimed their Garlic Aioli was amazing. I noticed it was pretty much cooked egg white texture (like the tofu itself) So it was missing the creamy texture of what an Aioli is. I could tell this could have been a much better sandwich. I do expect to go back and try them again in hopes to change my rating. My colleague had severe stomach pains soon after eating and felt sick most of the night. He thinks it was the sandwich as it was the last thing he ate. I'm giving it 1 star for now, because, hands down their homemade pickles are amazing!

Stumbled on this place by accident. I like this place because I am a very indecisive person, however there were only 4 sandwich choices to choose from so that made it easier for me to made a decision. I ordered the lamb sandwich ($9). Yummy bread, yummy things in between my bread. They put some salad on the side. Oh yes, I can taste the freshness in the ingredients they used.

SERIOUSLY. Best sandwiches in the Bay Area, hands down. I am ruined for all other sandwiches. I don't even go to Gregoire anymore. I want to marry Stag's Lunchette--or at least enter a domestic partnership--so that they'll just make all my meals every day. I am convinced there is no better food. (I'll do the dishes and grow your garden for you!) I still have yet to try any breakfast, but I hear the bagels are the best of the Bay Area. Also I eat only veggie/fish, but I am told the pastrami is the best too. And I feel like I need to reiterate what I said before about the bread-to-stuff ratio, which is so key. It's so great to have a sandwich on quality bread that doesn't taste/feel like all bread. I feel like Stag's really THINKS about what tastes good together and isn't afraid to be bold: fried capers, fresh arugula, green salsa, slathered on top of whatever the veggie pleasure is. And speaking of pleasure, everyone behind the counter is so lovely and kind and smiley, in an age of disappearing service. Even more to appreciate!

We were totally looking forward to checking this place out after reading an article from east bay edibles magazine. Upon entering on a really cold day awhile back, we went to the counter to order and asked if we could close the front door (as it was wide open and all the existing customers were eating in jackets and hats). It was uncomfortably cold for hanging out and eating. The two women up front were super lame about it and said the kitchen gets hot. It was really disappointing to be treated this way, like the customers are an inconvenience. I'm sure the owner who has put her heart and soul into Stag's and Dogwood also wouldn't be down with that lame attitude. It smelled amazing but we bailed because the vibe was so bad and we wanted to be comfortable.

Only thing going on here at Stag's is pure love in their sandwiches. Today was my maiden voyage and I could not have picked a better week. Crabcake sandwich? Yes please! 2 crabcakes, tucked into a big, buttery brioche bun, topped with pancetta. Holy hot damn, I just came in my mouth. It was better than I anticipated. I must admit, I took the weird lil tomatoes off, they were just getting in the way. Maybe I didn't need to admit that after all, but I thought you should know. I tried my man's grilled cheese and it was the best grilled cheese I have ever had in my entire life. I can see myself craving it in the very near future. The tomato relish they put in that makes it magical. I say it's worth $8 for the jar of that stuff just to have at home for grilled cheese emergencies. Both sandwiches came with a side of slaw, which tasted better once I sprinkled it with their champagne vinaigrette that they have on the tables. I wasn't sure what the red vinaigrette was next to it, but it sure looked spicy. The vibe in the place is hip and Oaklandie. However, I didn't like the idea of strangers feeling they could just sit at our table just because we had an extra chair..it was kind of rude and I just don't understand that type of mentality (ya know, 'sharing'..). I didn't come here to sit with strangers & socialize. Next time, I'll plan to leave and eat elsewhere.

Solid, if especially expensive for Oakland, high end sandwich place. Cheesesteak and a root beer was $17, and thankfully delicious. I would take business lunches here all day.

I had a feeling the word unctuous applied here. I wasn't sure because I don't know what that word means exactly, I've always had an inkling derived from that strange cultural communication that occurs like osmosis, but I googled it and it applies. Anthony Bourdain uses that word gratuitously and I always hear it used in a ridiculously over-emphasized way, accompanied by an octave drop in the speaker's voice that seemed to embody the way these sandwiches, look, feel and taste. Unctuous. It makes me feel pedantic just saying it (thanks again google). Anyway these sandwiches are pretty good, greasy, filling and rich. They aren't a sandwich for the weak-hearted, or the neat eaters. It's got a nice look and decor, on a hot afternoon it's down right sultry inside with hipster musk but that's okay. Their sandwiches change often but they're always good and messy. I wouldn't say they're over-priced for the quality of their food but it's not like going to Whole Foods and snagging a pre-made sandwich from the deli section. And it's cool because sometimes they have things like duck sausage sandwiches or lamb sandwiches and korean barbecue sandwiches that you just don't get at your typical sandwich shop. I know Ike's pretends to be the edgy hip sandwich scene but I'm pretty sure as far as cool factor and creativity goes Stag's embarrasses Ike's, and they don't even have to name their sandwiches ridiculous things to accomplish it. Their sauces are pretty good too. Be careful though the line between not enough of the garlicky vinegar one on your sandwich and turning your sandwich into a drenched mess is a thin one. If it wasn't so warm and crowded in there I'd be here once a week. Also they really need to adjust their hours of operation, I can never truly enjoy such an "unctuous" meal in the half an hour I get between shit-storms at work.

BEST GRILL CHEESE SANDWICH in the BAY! and thats an incredibly difficult claim to make because the competition is thick out here but Stags is the best breakfast/lunch spot in Oakland hands down, try the simple breakfast for only served till 10:45, make sure to add the cured trout for an extra $2 an excellent value.

Came here for lunch during the bar exam this week with a friend and it was really really good! We both had the pork loin sandwich which comes with pickled onions, arugala, and a really yummy aioli. Whatever bread it comes on it also really tasty (crusty/soft and fresh!). Sort of got crowded during lunch and some of the items were sold out but that's just a testament to how high the quality of the food is. I'll be back if I'm in the area!

Ordered the grilled cheese - At $5, it is a filling, super deal and tasty to boot. Lots of cheese on nice crispy, buttery Acme sourdough. Comes with a salad with cornichons, and a side of mustard. Salad was dressed perfectly. The cornichons cut the fat of the cheese nicely. The mustard looked to be house made, and was a tasty addition when I dipped my sandwich in it. Way to go Stag's!

So THIS is where all the cool kids eat lunch! Since starting work in Uptown, I've been looking for THAT place that I am a-ok with eating at multiple times a week. Forget the corporate eateries and plain jane cafes in the area, Stag's is the real deal, and I will gladly shell out double digit dollars for a fresh sandwich served up by the friendliest hands I've yet to shake in Uptown. Fav. sandwiches so far: Peruvian chicken - so amazingly flavorful and masterfully made! tender fried chicken with exotic sauces Smoked turkey and bacon - nice balance with thick chunk of turkey and crispy bacon Pastrami - seems to be every ones favorito but was too salty for me since their was so much meat with nothing much to balance it out Extra cool points for fresh sides that change daily AND are super yummy: Chicken and orzo salad Kale salad Pasta salad Clean, wood cabin feel. Several tables up front. Espresso/coffee menu. Breakfast menu, also, which I can't wait to try. AND their menu changes every Tuesday, and this week they have crab cake sandwiches! AHH!!!

As a vegetarian, there are fewer options for me to eat here, but I greatly appreciate that there's always something for me on the daily menu. And not just the grilled cheese--often there's a solid vegan choice. I'm ridiculously impressed with the quality, flavor, and creativity of the lunch options. When I feel like treating myself and spending a little more on lunch, I'll come here. And love it.

Staggs is the best place to eat lunch Downtown. I eat here at least 3 times a week, some times for breakfast and lunch. Favorites are the coca cola beef, all of their chicken sandwiches are good and the lamb is to die for. For those with gluten sensitivities (like me part time) you can make any sandwich in to a salad, and I some times prefer the taste over the sandwiches. If your feeling budget conscious the grilled cheese is is out of this world, get the relish to go with for added pizzazz. The staff is super friendly and cute to boot, the decor is down to earth and every detail was thought about. Lots of natural wood, old mason jars, beautiful flower arrangements, designer lighting, all with out feeling stuffy or pretentious. You can taste the quality of the meat and veggies in all of the offerings. Local, organic and prepared with care. Doesn't get much better in my book. You are what you eat after all.

Killer sandwiches. Only complaint is that both the meatloaf and reuben left me and m'lady in dire need of a nap since they are a bit on the heavy greasy side. If you are looking to cure a hangover, though, look no further. And to be fair, nobody orders a meatloaf sandwich and expects to feel light as a feather afterwards. Cool atmosphere, good service. Kinda pricey. Two sammys and two mexicokes ran 26 bucks. All told best sandwiches (other than banh mi from Cam Huong!) I have had in Oakland. Slow in Downtown Berkeley, however, makes equal or better gourmet sandwiches that don't leave you feeling like a coma patient.

It's ridiculous to write a review after the first visit to a restaurant. But I just had a ridiculously delicious sandwich, so there! First time visiting Stag's...pleasant atmosphere, good table layout, friendly service and a damn good short rib sandwich. Love the casualness of it...meat, french fries, roasted potato, some romaine all tossed together on a fabulous mini baguette. Note to self: need to eat there while it's hot and not take home to get cold. I'm happy!

This is an amazing breakfast and lunch spot, with good coffee and extra friendly staff. They have the best grilled cheese I've ever ordered out, you have to try it with the tomato onion jam or the whiskey bacon chutney or with both. This is a pretty trendy spot, that's only open for breakfast and lunch during the week. Caters to business folks who want good food To-go and also to those who want to dine in. I think it's one of the best spots for lunch in oakland.

ive been wanting to swing by here for some time now....Jena from Sacred Wheel Cheese Shop kept raving about their sandwiches and how great this place was, so i finally made it over, and they definitely didnt disappoint...but neither did they blow my mind... i wont lie...i looked at the menu and the only thing i really wanted to try was the crab roll...of course, i get there...NO CRAB ROLL. i shouldve just left and came back another time, but being that i have a good idea "how good" the crab roll might potentially be, i opted for 2 different sandwiches instead...the Cuban with extra pork loin and some other sandwich on a big ass roll... i dont know how they made the pork loin, but most of the time ive had it in the past, it tends to be a bit salty and tougher in texture...not here at Stag's...i would have to say that it was the most tender piece of lean sliced pork that ive ever had (outside of steamed pork belly) and i mean TENDER! being that i ordered an extra portion of the meat, i figured it wouldve been a bit to chew, but my teeth went thru the crusty bread and thru all the different meats like a hot knife thru butter on a summer afternoon....tender, tender, tender meat and lots of flavor...that right there was a good sandwich and will definitely try again... as for the other one...im not gonna say it wasnt great...but the Cuban was just far superior. this one was some type of marinated pork, packed full of flavor...lots of spices and lots of leafy greens and all served up on a big roll...but, i forget the name (sorry!!!) LOL will be back to try the porchetta, coffee, and crab sandwich next time. just make sure that you go early to beat the lunch rush!

Charming little place, perhaps a bit hipster. Great food, the kale salad with hazelnuts was good and the Reuben was fantastic. Parking a was a lot easier than expected. Not a great value if you need a quick lunch everyday, but a really good special occasion spot.

I came here with the husband for lunch. He's been here with co-workers a time or two and loves breakfasts and their rueben. Can't say that I don't blame him for his meat lust. That reuben sandwich was darn good. Juicy, well cured meat, fresh, toasty bread, tangy mustard all made for one of the best sandwiches I've had in a long time. I loved the kale salad. Very tasty! Light vinegarette was excellent with the kale and spouts. Made me feel healthy and full. Bagel and Lox was good. A lot of lox and accoutrement on the plate. Nice fresh bagel, not one of those weirdly chewy and dry at the same time things I've gotten from Noah's Bagels. The decor was nice. Warm wood throughout. Plenty of high hables and barstools to sit at. The bathroom was nice too. Large, well equipped and super clean. I am docking one star because your bar stools and wooden floors, while quite lovely are very high and slippery as hell, respectively. As evidenced by my falling on the floor from one of your bar stools. Sorry If I dented your floor. Great reason to shop and dine Oakland!

I love this place. They always come up with new and different items that you would hardly ever think of putting on a sandwich. I had the Chicken Melt today, but the bacon was left off. I expressed my love for the sandwich and even though the bacon got left off.... it still was YUM-O. The gal at the register even offered me something else to offset the bacon that was left off of my sandwich. FIVE STARS FOR HER!!!

In this particular part of town you will not find anything better in a format of a nice little cafe. I am extremely specific when it comes to foods and this place surprised me with their attention to detail. The meats are of the right cut and cooked perfectly for every type of dish they serve which are mostly sandwiches and high tech burgers. Then they top it off with very creative use of vegetables (like beet roots), dressings and house made sauces which are surprisingly awesome. I have eaten here once, but everything was so right about my lamb burger that I had to give this place 5 stars which are totally deserved. The atmosphere here is also pretty awesome. The best place in this part of town!!! Come and eat here any day - you will not be disappointed!

Great place. "Slow" in downtown Berkeley used to be my favorite place for sandwiches but this one is even better. I tried the mushroom Panini. You can really tell that the ingredients are high quality and fresh. A much healthier option than most of the other sandwiches places. The staff is also really nice, and the place has a lot of character. Will definitely come back and I'm looking forward to trying other sandwiches

I love this Lovely Lunch Spot.. Its Rocking. I just had the most delicious vegetarian sandwich ever..I had the Vege Sub... with EGGPLANT SUN DRIED TOMATO RELISH, FRIED NON GMO TOFU, MOZZARELLA, GARLIC AIOLI, SALSA VERDE, GREENS... and it rocked. My friend had their chicken sandwich and said that rocked too.. Yummy yummo. I rarely eat sandwiches as there is often nothing good.. This place feels home made with all your favorite things you could ever conjure up. The staff were funny and sweet. I like how it looks, all woody and natural. I have been to Bar Dogwood, and had the best Grilled Cheese Sandwich ever there. So I figured same owner, same amount of insight, care and great taste surely must go into the Stags Lunchette, and it has. To other lunch places out there.. Go here try their food.. This is how its done folks.. So good. Can't wait to return.

Discovered this gem today and I'm so happy I did. The lady at cash register likens herself to a lunch consultant, and after I told her I still felt intoxicated from the night before, she talked me into a grilled cheese instead of the cobb salad I'd initially ordered. I also ordered a small side of kale (gotta have greens). Their grilled cheese rivals Dogwood's. It may even be better. I will have to try it a few more times before I decide. The side of kale mixed with goat cheese and pomegranate seeds is delightful. The kale was fresh and crisp and not overly dressed. This place is reppin' everything I love about Oakland. Welcome to the town, Stag's!

Had the pastrami and it was delicious! Likes: 1. They know how to make good sandwiches. 2. Rustic man decor 3. Have a feeling anything here will be good Suggestions: 1. Larger portion sizes!

This place is amazeballs. I dream about their sandwiches all the time. My favorites are the thai sausage, lamb, jerk chicken, and they philly. If these ever go back on the menu i suggest that you eat them and eat them before they sell out! Bomb.com

Had the Phili Porkie and Steak Salad. BEST SANDWICH EVER. Pork was tender and juicy, perfect amount of cheese and other fillers, and bread was tasty and toasted to perfection. Can't wait to try the other sandwiches! Steak Salad had quality ingredients, but it was soaked in dressing. Next time I'll ask for dressing on the side. A plus for being environmentally responsible!

New sandwich shop in my 'hood. The pastrami sandwich was tasty. I'd go again and try the other sandwiches and salads. But I do agree with another reviewer about the staff being a bit rude. I would characterize it as unwelcoming. No smile, no hello, no thanks. WTF? The problem is they didn't seem to want my business even though I was happy to give it to them. So, now I'm on the fence. I so very much want to support my local business. But will I receive the same treatment again? I guess I'll make my final determination after my next visit.

The food is good, the bagels made by Dan Graf are very good, but the menu is limited, and on both occasions the staff was rude and/or clueless. I really can't put into words just how rude the staff was without the threat of the owner contacting Yelp* and asking them to remove my post, which already happened. After the owner asked me to come back in and try again, but not before making countless excuses for why the staff is so rude. I've worked in customer service, and my girlfriend works in the industry. We were appalled by the attitude, and it makes us not want to recommend this place, but since the food is pretty good, it's somewhat worth it. On the other hand, there's Chop Bar in Jack London, which serves the same bagels, and does so in a much friendlier, nicer way, so that's my alternative. It's hard to feel good about giving an establishment hard earned dollars when they treat you like you're doing them the favor.

Java Junkies, BEWARE! Their espresso is addicting. Perfectly foamed Caps, Macchiatos, and Mochas. (I tried it all.) Prices aren't bad for solid taste. Their regular brewed coffee and hot chocolate is good, too! Next experiment: Chai tea.

Absolutely wonderful! Amazing! Will tell everyone I know! Went for the first time today and loved the atmosphere the minute I walked in. Not a whole lot of seating room, but still a nice ambience. Friendly staff; not waiter service, but seems to be pretty efficient. BF got the BBQ beef sandwich and I had the Broccolini Tartine; split a kale salad. Both of us were blown away by how delicious and amazing these sandwiches are. My tartine came with three slices, and I can't wait to eat the last slice as soon as my stomach can fit food in there again. We're already talking about going back there tomorrow to try the breakfast! Also, not sure exactly what they were, but there are 2 sauces on the tables. Both were spicy and paired perfectly with my veggies. Will return soon.

You will never leave this establishment displeased. Every time I leave there, I think they can't possibly top the meal I had before, and they do. Almost every time! You'll pay slightly more than you would across the street for a fish taco, but the fresh ingredients and excellent cuts of fresh meat make it so worth it. Most sandwiches (all of which can also be made as a salad) range around $8-$10. I also highly recommend the grilled cheese sandwich for $5 with optional add-ons. Like no other grilled cheese you've ever had.

Went in for the first time today and I was disappointed. I wanted to love it since I love pastrami and its convenient, but I have to be honest. I ordered the pastrami sandwich, pickle and a diet coke. The sandwich was very tasty but there was so little meat that the bread wasn't even covered with a single layer of meat. The pastrami was also fatty. I think for $10 you should get a sandwich that is filling. You can get a pastrami sandwich at Rattos or Genova that is huge and less than $10. I enjoyed the included salad, but I didn't realize until I had left that I never received my pickle. I was really looking forward to that homemade pickle. I wasn't thrilled to pay a dollar for one pickle, but that was consistent. I want to give this place a second chance and I will, but I'm afraid that these issues aren't "problems" as the owners see it so I doubt anything will be done to improve. Really a bummer. I'm happy to pay a premium price for a premium product, but I don't think that's what I got.

The Pork Sandwich was good but a little dry. The salad on the side was a spoon full of lettuce. The Chicken Caliente Sandwich was tasty. Both were $12. The salad was also $12.00, Mexican Chicken Ceasar. Very spicy for a Ceasar salad, the croutons were excellent however. Not worth $12.00 for a salad, a very small salad with a few pieces of chicken. Restaurant is small, crowded and loud. Ordered when I arrived, food came out very quickly. And yes, they yell your name, so you do need to listen over the noise. Lunch prices in Downtown Oakland have gone up dramatically. Competing with SF I guess. Hard to pay dinner prices for lunch in a fast food restaurant. Though I still want to try the Trout Bagels one morning.

Sigh...I'm sorely disappointed by this last trip. Let's rewind and I'll start from my first experience. First of all, I'm a vegetarian, I have been for 8 years. I know my food since it gets repeated a lot at restaurants and fast food spots. So, my first time here, i get the tofu scramble sandwich...it was NOT what i expected at all, totally sloppy, but 100% delicious. Their side of beets and goat cheese was YUM. total was =$11ish. Service was a bit slow, but everyone was nice. Second experience, coffee in the AM...strong and to the point! total was =$2. The service was excellent. The third experience is where it goes down hill...I ordered the eggplant sandwich. I get the sandwich, take a bite, and say, "where is the eggplant?" I go to the guy at the counter and the owner comes up behind him and says, "you don't like it? return it and we will give you your money back!". I say, "I don't mind, I just want to know where is the eggplant?" she says, "its the pickled stringy stuff..." OHHHH...excuse me! I was expecting a slice of eggplant (fried or baked)..and she says, "don't like it? return it"...I go sit back down at my table and she comes to my table and says it again, "don't like it? return it!"...and i tell her what i was expecting and she says, "we don't do what people expect" and I respond with, "on your menu, you should tell people it is pickled!" and she says, "there is no room..don't like it? return it!"...whatever..I ate the half of it and left. I don't think I'll come back again just cause the lady was such a jerk about the whole thing! very unprofessional and rude, the last thing i want is to return a sandwich when I'm starving and being nice about paying $7 for a sandwich.. That experience was worth 1 star, but everything else is worth at least four stars

I've just finished eating the gigande flageolet Tartine and it was so delicious I felt compelled to get on here and write a long -overdue review. I've been coming to this place for over a year now, and everything I've eaten has been absolutely fresh and delicious. Especially their many variations of the tartine. I'm always looking forward to their next new combo. The rotating menu means you'll never be bored - at one point I was coming here 4x a week! The staff are very friendly and welcoming. Stop by and see for yourself!

6 Sandwiches 3 Salads (maybe 4?) Some drinks and etc. Pickles if you ask. They keep it simple, and do simple well. I was apparently from a long line of Nicks that day... a late 2pm Pastrami sandwich was on my mind. Well, after the two groups in front of me talked about how good the Pastrami was, it had me change my mind from the pulled pork sandwich that the menu seduced me with. (at 2pm everything sounds great when you still need a bite) It was a pretty dang good sandwich. Was a even $10. Portion was expected, not drastic, and it is apparent that I paid for quality after taking my first bite. I rarely order Pastrami, so this was easily the best I've ever had. Don't go here to customize your creation, go here to order as is. They know what they are doing. The place is also very clean and has a authentic feel to it. I'll be back!

Update--Stag's has been open awhile since I wrote my first review and guess what: it still RULES! Maybe even harder than previously thought! Thanks for existing in my neighborhood and on my route to BART so that I can have the best coffee and breakfast to start off my day. I haven't had one thing here that sucked. That's right... zero suckage!

A summary of my three experiences at Stag's: First We go for lunch. Cash only - they're working on the merchant card stuff. No big deal. Luckily we brought cash. I cant help but think.... its 2012. I tried the pork sandwhich. It was ok. My coworker friends felt the same. Second Next day go back to try the $10 pastrami. Closed. Refridgeration problems. No big deal. It happens. Third Go back again to try the pastrami. They're open so it must be my lucky day. Get to the cash register. "Sorry, we're out of pastrami." You gotta be kidding me. Being out of pastrami might not be a big deal if you have a bunch of options to choose from. But at this place no pastrami means pork sandwhich, grilled cheese... or maybe the tofu??? The two times this place was open, no meatball on the menu. Never seen this alleged "Meatball Sandwhich."

This place is fabulous, and a recent discovery for me. The tri-tip and the pulled pork were both absolutely delicious. Also; the chef understands aromatics and vinegars, so it's not your run of the mill over-fatted sweet stuff; there is real complexity to the flavors. A serious win for lunch, any day. I also really like the feel of the place, the distressed woods and overall design of the place is just really great.

A co-worker recommended Stag's so all the ladies in the office walked over today. I ordered the Chicken and Rice Soup and Grilled Cheese Sandwich. The grilled cheese was made with mozzarella and sharp white cheddar on sourdough. You can add a bacon chutney and a tomato onion jam. I was skeptical about the both of these and asked for them on the side. Both were amazing!! The tomato onion jam was a mix of sweet and spicy. The bacon chutney looked a little sketch but was a perfect touch. The grilled cheese is $5.00, bacon chutney $2.00 and tomato onion jam $1.00. I recommend it all!! The soup was very good. It was a chicken broth base with big chunks of chicken. It was made with rice, cilantro, chives and jalapeno. I assumed the jalapeno was served whole and could be taken out. I was mistaken... it had to have been pureed right into the soup because damn was it spicy! It was an after spice that catches up with you. It went really well with the grilled cheese. My co-workers ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich and the cold Roast Beef/White Cheddar/Arugula Sandwich. Both were very good. The menu changes every week so this place has now been added to our list of places to go each week at work.

If God ever decides to make pastrami, I imagine it would taste like this. It is pastrami paradise. In my entire life, I have never had better ... East Coast or West. New Yorkers should make a pilgrimage here and then weep because they have nothing to match this pastrami perfection. There is no dryness. The fat to meat ratio is ideal. They don't advertise it as a Reuben which is good because it isn't even though there is a light swipe of dressing and super sauerkraut. It comes with a nice small green salad and great olives. The only negative was the house made dill pickle. It was NOT fabulous as the order taker said. It was way too soft and heavy on the garlic. This needs more work. Still five stars because of the sandwich. I don't like the decor one bit. It is way too dark. If that is the case, they need to put some lights on the menu over the register. There are only bar stools which are not comfortable. They need to buy a fan. Hot, dark and uncomfortable is not a good thing. Next time will be take out. On the positive side, it has a classic old-time Bay Area feel to it like Tadich or Moose's in SF. The meat is free of antibiotics and cruelty free which is a big plus for me. They also have some vegetarian and vegan options which is good for my occasional trips to veggieville. I liked the taste of the Stag's sauce, a thin yellow hot sauce that seems habenero-based. I hope they sell it by the bottle. It has a nice balance of heat and flavor. Next to try: the house smoked bacon and house-made bagels. Stag's is staggeringly stupendous.

Ran into the owner Alexeis last night at her other spot, Bar Dogwood (Go there. GO.). Somehow, we got into a conversation about bagels. I said that one thing I super missed about the east coast was salt bagels. She said if I came in for breakfast today, there'd be a coupla black salt bagels for me. I did. There was. ::Does Napoleon Dynamite "Yussssss.":: . Swathed in chive cream cheese, and accompanied by a cup of excellent coffee from Roast, a glass of fresh OJ, and a side of bacon. Fucking excellent start to a slightly hungover morning.

Stag's is a great business! Nestled in the heart of 17th, it has a low lighting enivronment a wood cabin feel inside. The food is great, healthy, and portioned well. I love the Breakfast sandwich, which comes prepared on a fresh sandwich bun, pouched egg, cilantro, and some nicely baked potatoes on the side with a sauce. All this for $5!!! What a deal! Coffee and other snacks are avaiable as well! You should stop by! You'll love it! The pulled pork sandwich is TASTY and filling! Frequent customer~

I just devoured a first-edition Stag's pastrami reuben with ginger kraut, which proved to be a splendid, life-affirming sandwich. I'm glad their official opening coincided with my day off so I could be one of the first to partake of this quite amazing creation. I do regret not also ordering the equally beguiling porchetta sandwich. Maybe this Saturday.

  • Alvina C.

I lied. I came back again, simply because I was (and still am) curious about the other sandwich options. Today I had the pulled pork with spicy slaw; the slaw was very tart and not that spicy in my opinion. The pork was super tender and the bun was nice and soft (hehe). All in all, a good sandwich, but the pastrami beats it by a long shot! Next on the list: the tri tip and the meatball!! I should pace myself....

The skillful Staff at Stag's makes a top shelf cappuccino. The sandwiches are also delicious and have a sophisticated flavor profile. I love the "take-away" sandwiches-the chicken salad last week was so incredibly delicious. Can't wait to go back for more!

This place is a sandwich lover's heaven, but they also have a variety of yummy side salads. Eating there was a delicious way to spend Saturday afternoon. I also really like the decor, which reminds me a bit of a boyscout camp you'd see in Moonrise Kingdom, complete with bows and duck decoys.

Stag's Lunchette LOOKS SWEET. Who is Stag? Stag subscribes to Real Simple, and watches HGTV, but knows how to set up a tent with two hubbed pole sets and one crossover pole in like ten minutes. Favorite show is the American Culinary Institute instructional DVDs. The sandwiches are like crackwiches. Instead of toothpicks you get arrows. And I can get a side order of farro and plums and be super healthy.

BOMB. I went here yesterday based off the Yelp email "Yelps a good wich". They only had about 6 sandwich options, which is fine with me, but I wish they had turkey. I ended up getting a grilled cheese with bacon chutney. Yes, BACON CHUTNEY!! And it was the best thing I've ever eaten. The entire rest of the day I was craving another sandwich. The chick behind the counter was also really awesome.

We had breakfast at Stag's today: the bagel platter and the egg sandwich. The egg sandwich was crispy and flavorful, with a little frisee in it to balance the richness of the egg. The bread was also light and crispy, so you can eat this egg sandwich for breakfast without regretting it all day... The bagel platter, with juicy tomatoes, onions, capers and smoked trout, was awesome. And this comes from someone who's first stop in New York City is always Barney Greengrass and is willing to spend 50+ dollars on a smoked fish platter, so this is like a dream come true for me. An amazing addition to our neighborhood!

What an amazing little shop in downtown Oakland. The sandwiches Stag's serves up are local, seasonal, and incredibly delicious. The pork chop with grilled fennel and peaches on a huge crusty roll is amazing, and the mozzarella and heirloom tomato tartine is what every version of this sandwich should strive to be. It's pretty near impossible to get a table during the lunch rush, so plan to take your sandwich to go.

  • Shawn C.

Great place for a quality lunch with a unique vibe. They switch up the menu weekly and have great hot sandwiches. The place seems fresh but can be a little expensive if you're a young professional or student. Meals are $10 and up but you are paying for good quality.

  • Matthew B.

This is truly the best sandwich spot in Oakland. Since they opened almost a year ago they've only gotten better and better. They change their menu every Tuesday to always keep things interesting and they never make a bad sandwich. Now that they're open on weekends you officially have no excuse to be sleeping on this place

  • Mikah M.

Different sandwiches every day, but there's almost always something amazing. My favorite lunch is the tea-smoked tofu sandwich, and I have to say their breakfast sandwiches are also a step up from the usual greasy egg-and-cheese combo you would expect. A bit on the pricey side, but you definitely get quality.

This place rocks. They can do no wrong in my book. Yummy, deliciousness is all you will find here. If you are opposed to yummy, deliciousness, then you can go somewhere else. They have plenty of other dedicated patrons to fill your void.

I went there today for lunch with a colleague after walking by the place and reading some other reviews on Yelp. From other reviews I decided to order the Pastrami, which was good. I thought it was a nice little space they have there and it seems like they are trying to do something a little more gourmet than other places around Uptown. Still, $14 feels like a little too much to pay for a normal sized Pastrami sandwich, a diet coke, and a bag of chips. I'm sure I will try again, and I'd probably give 3.5 stars if that was an option. I still think Aroma Cafe on 19th & Franklin is hard to beat for quality and price, and that has been my go to sandwich spot for 10 years.

  • Jen C.

Pastrami sandwich was tasty, although a little on the saltier side than most pastrami's I have had. The rye is a plus with this sandwich. It's easy and delicious and not too pricey. Definitely want to try another kind of sandwich. I like how they change it up every week too!

  • Camille B.

If I could eat gluten, I think I'd give this place a 4 or 5. But unfortunately, I can't have the yummy breads and sandwiches here. I order the sandwich with no bread, greens instead. The filling is great, but they put it right on top of the greens, so all the greens are soggy and greasy and uneatable by the time I get back to the office. I'm going to start telling them to not put greens directly under. I wish they just naturally did this so I wouldn't have to worry about including that in my phone order.

I have not written a review in a long time, but a coworker just mentioned this place to me that I had passed by a 100 times and she raved how good the grilled cheese was. So today I decided to take another coworker and we both got griled cheese sandwiches to go. We got there at 11:45 and the place was starting to fill up. Very cool place with neat decor. The sandwich was awesome! By far the best grilled cheese sandwich I've ever eaten! I got it with the bacon chutney and tomato jam. It came with cornichons, some very good mustard on the side, and a very tasty salad! I will be back!

Amazing Ruben! My friend got a steak salad which I tried some of, very very good. Beets were spectacular. Service with a smile. Also, for those that work in the area, they have pre-made sandwiches at the cash register that are $6 and look pretty good.

Freaking love this place, and so glad it exists near my work. Fabulous tasting, high quality sandwiches every single time. My favorites have been the pastrami, this Peruvian chicken sandwich, and... One time they had a MOREL AND PORK SAUSAGE SANDWICH. I took my first bite and very audibly and involuntarily moaned - my coworkers thought I was hurt but I was really just lost in orgasmic food heaven. Plus, they carry fancy pastries (like the illustrious kouign amann) and Baron's bagels if you're into that sort of thing. Been meaning to try breakfast sometime. If this place ever shut down, I would cry.

For a couple of weeks now, many of my co-workers have raved about the quality of bread on the sandwiches here and their coffee. I've been meaning to try either their breakfast items or lunch sandwiches, but the lines and complaints of slow service had deterred me from entering this place. So when I finally walked by and saw no line today, I decided to grab lunch here. I was debating between the chicken and mint sandwich and the duck sausage sandwich, per recommendation of the cashier, I went with the duck. I was surprised to see a tiny toasted baguette wrapping the duck sausage, looked more like a oversized hotdog with pickled veggies on top. Honestly, the texture of the bread was great, and I loved eating the arugula mixed with the pickled purple cabbage, but the sausage needed more work(in texture-it felt grainy). The flavors all felt right(initially), but something about the mixture of textures between the bread and sausage was not. The taste profiles for the first two bites was great, but as I took the third bite, there was an overdoes of mustard heavily concentrated in the center of the sandwich and it just threw me off. Overall, if there was less mustard(or evenly spread mustard), and if it was easier to bite into the sandwich, I would have liked it a lot more. Hopefully when I try their next sandwich, I may be more impressed.

Stag's is the ultimate cozy and healthy coffee/lunch spot. The people are great, the espresso is fantastic and the food is fresh and yummy. I wish they had a few more veggie options, but other than that, I'm a huge fan.

  • Darren G.

I give this place an extra half star because it's around the corner and I love how the neighborhood's food options are improving. Another half star is deserved because of their homey, lodge-y, themed-but-not-kitschy "branding" and interior. The breakfast salad was simply delicious. Fingerlings, a perfectly (fried?) poached egg, tasty green, sweet tomatoes and a lovely fresh-herby dressing made this boy's morning. The iced coffee was also perfect (I am picky about iced coffee), so I am sold. 4.5 stars because I have only been once and five stars is like utter, repeatable perfection.

  • Warren S.

Hooray! A gourmet sandwich shop that is a block and a half away from work. The menu is short, but you will find delicious sandwiches and salads that are made from really really good ingredients. The meat sandwiches are tasty, albeit on the salty side. The vegetarian sandwiches are excellent and have plenty of flavor. The menu changes every few days, because they use seasonal, market-fresh ingredients. However, gourmet sandwiches require a gourmet-sized wallet. The sandwiches start at $8 and some sandwiches eclipse the $10 price point. The sandwiches are small in comparison to other sandwich/hoagie shops around the area that charge around $5 or $6. It's definitely a treat to have every once in a while and not an everyday kind of place if you are on a budget.

I love love love this place! I've been there several times for lunch, and this morning had my first breakfast sandwich. The food is fit for gourmets, and people who like creative, and perfected dishes. The service is friendly and quick. I love the grilled cheese sandwich, all their deli salads, and all the specials have been great. The decor is fabulous as well. I live in SF, but would drive to Oakland just to eat at this place! LOVE!

I was so excited to go to Stag's to try the meatball sandwich that got rave reviews on Yelp. I waited a long time in line and when I got to the front, no meatball sandwich. No, you only get to eat what they decide to cook that day - no going in with expectations of trying a specific thing on a menu. Sadly, I ordered the roast beef sandwich - which ended up being really great food! Warm sliced roast beef (but not over-cooked) topped with a hot cheddar cheese horseradish sauce on a toasted bun with organic greens - Yum! One star off for not having a website with a daily or weekly menu that could have told me I shouldn't have bothered to go for a meatball sandwich on that particular day. If you want to be a successful restaurant, you have to actively manage customer expectations - it's not just about the cooking. One more star off for charging $9 for a sandwich that should be $6. Would I go back? Maybe, if I was in the mood to splurge on some random great food at price 30% higher than I want to pay for a typical lunch sandwich. I still really want to try the meatball sandwich so my new plan is to scout out some other restaurants in the area as backups. I'll swing by Stag's and see if they are offering the meatball sandwich on the board. If so, I'll get in line and take my chances, otherwise I'll try another new spot in that area. But, because of the $9 price it won't be a regular spot for me.

terrariums, taxidermy mounted antlers, mason jars and the according neck beards. But I was ok with it :) because the proof was in the plum tomato tart- looking like fine living, and tasting so perfectly seasoned: complementarily on that paragon butter crust. on the side, bruised kale giving as good as its vinaigrette got acidic and sweet. As far as kale goes, I was surprised at how good it got, not in least part because of that fresh feta-ey cheese they put in it, good gracious. In my laundry day shirt and jeans I felt not the least bit shamed amidst the quaffed i-bankers and pashimina women with their baby mozart babies. because we were all enraptured in our duck sausage, pickled, fennel, so-and-so's and swimming in that homemade habenero sauce. The legitimacy of the food refused pretension. but I think they need more chairs!

Ordered the Philly Steak with Bacon. I often have salad for lunch, but it was a cold summer day with a lot going on. Decided on comfort food. It's a $10 sandwich and worth every penny. I'm a pretty sturdy girl, but it's enough for two meals! Quite tasty, flavorful and a bit of a spicy kick at the end. I've had the pastrami rueben and the chicken. Both great as well.

I previously ranked this place as 5 stars, but had to drop a star for the gradual increase in prices. The food is great and high quality. But $12-$15 a sandwich discourages many from patronizing this place more often. I highly recommend this place however. I don't recommend any of their Mexican tortas because they are not much different from tortas you get at nearby Mexican restaurants for half the price. All other sandwiches I've tried were really good. My favorite is the cubanito.

I met a collegue here for lunch. It's a little farther for me to walk from work but so worth it. It's pretty small, mostly bar stool height seating and a limited menu. What they have is pretty good. I've tried their grilled cheese with bacon chutney - yummy. Not your kiddie grilled cheese, very tasty especially w/ the chutney. Another time I tried their pastrami - also yummo. You have to come here before noon otherwise it does get busy. While I like the food, there's a limited selection and they really need to have ice by their water.

dear stag's, today i ate your monte cristo sandwich, and i wept. i wept for the spirit of elvis, that he did not live to partake of the delectable magnificence that was the stag's monte cristo, that he did not have the joy of experiencing the savory balance of turkey, ham and gruyere mingling - no, dancing! - on his taste buds with the sweet rosemary strawberry jam with which you served this fine sandwich. it was so perfect that i don't even think he would have demanded that you add bananas and peanut butter to it. this was a sandwich worthy of placing at graceland before the grave of the king, under one of those rose-garlanded signs people travel from florida or kansas to leave at the elvis-shrine. thank you for this awesomeness. xox, gigi

Short on seating but the crab sandwich I had was amazing. For that alone I would go back.

Had their Pork and peach sandwich. I definitely had high expectations given the ratings and they definitely didn't disappoint. Although it was a little on the higher side for a lunch sandwich, the taste and quality of ingredients shows through. The restaurant itself is quaint with a bunch of bar stools and high tables to eat at. I would definitely come back here, but probably not an everyday place.

I came here with some work friends a couple weeks ago. As soon as I walked in the door the smell of meat hits you. I'm not a vegetarian but I usually avoid red meat, but if you're going to have meat once in awhile, you might as well do it at Stag's. I had the meatball sandwich, which was not what you usually expect (no tomato sauce on top with grated cheese) but was quite interesting, flavorful and fresh. Nice people, fast service for the quality of food and attractive interior.

Ran in to Stag's by accident in downtown Oakland. Cute hipster coffee shop vibe, hardcore music playing. All good. Not much seating so ordered to go. Had the pulled chicken sandwich. It was tasty. Came with a nondescript coleslaw. For 8 bucks a so-so value. They didn't bother to put napkins or a fork in the togo box, a little detail. First impression the front counter guy was borderline rude & impatient. But worse he was eating & drinking & rubbing his face & nose at the counter. Not an appetizing site for a food joint. Stag's is a bit trendy but seems like an interesting concept if they can work on the details. Lots of good sandwich joints in downtown Oakland. Hope they can compete. This is a first impression review. Will probably try again & update if necessary.

Local, fresh, delicious. Exactly what the neighborhood has been missing. So far I've tried the ricotta breakfast dish, the breakfast sandwich, the pastrami, the egg salad and the grilled eggplant. All delicious and I will keep going back. Coffee is great too - be warned, only whole milk or soy.

Good...not fabulous. Cozy place. Nice and clean. Convenient to work, but rather expensive for lunch. Shared two sandwiches ...the Pastrami (which was full of fat) and the Cuban something or other with a co-worker. They were tasty enough, but considering the price, a little on the "thin' side. Both came with a smattering of mixed greens, a couple of cherry tomatoes and a couple of olives. Didn't hate it, but probably will not go back for the price.

What a gem in the heart of Oakland. You gotta know about it, it's a bit of a hole in the wall~But oh so worth it. The Reuben was phenomenal and quite tasty! I've also had a breakfast egg sandwich, Yum. Beautiful atmosphere, well designed and the coffee bar is great. Highly recommend!

Been twice for the pastrami sandwich. If you like pastrami, you have to try this sandwich. A colleague tried the meatball sandwhich which was also very good. I will try to work my way through the menu, but it is very hard to get past the pastrami sandwich. Thank you Stag's for serving high quality sandwichs.

After reading a couple other reviews I'm still waiting for that feature request I put into yelp, to filter out the opinions of vegetarians. Stag is awesome. If you want quality food at a great price with a thank you this is the place to. The food is always made from good quality ingredients, and a perfect balance of flavors. If you want something gourmet but your not sure what, stag is a great option. If you want a custom ordered sandwich with the same turkey and (insert your desired quantity) of mayo and mustard, stag is not the right pick. I've had 12 different items here and have been impressed by them all. Meatballs, pastrami, lamb, pulled chicken, duck sausage, trout bagels, bacon.... everything has been fantastic. The innovative, evolving and rotating menu keeps me coming back.

I am officially obsessed with the pastrami. I had the sandwich twice last week, and it is only a view to my pocketbook and my doctor that has kept me from returning in the last few days. So far I've tried the bagel with smoked trout, cream cheese, etc. (fantastic bagel, like the ones I grew up with in Boston); the meatball sandwich (great mozzarella, meatballs tender, a little bit spicy, great tomato sauce); and the pastrami sandwich (how do I love thee? Let me count the ways...). Husband has had an eggplant sandwich (says it was good) and a grilled cheese with bacon chutney ("honey, can we go back there soon?"). Last time I was there the sandwich was served with a really dynamite tomato and grilled vegetable salad. It was a upgraded version of a classic greek tomato salad--really delicious. Oh, and they carry Starter Bakery Kouign Ammans. What more is there to say? I rarely bother to post reviews on Yahoo, but this is most definitely worth a stop, or two, or three. I've heard some complaints about the lighting, but I don't mind it. I do kinda hate the bar stools, but that's because my fat ass doesn't ever stay on board. Oh, and the pickle definitely needs some tweaking in the recipe department, but that's not really important in the giant scheme of things.

This new little lunch spot from the peeps who brought you Dogwood know how to make a mean sandwich. This place is really nice, interesting decor that looks like you're hanging out in someone's den. Staff is choc-full-o' uber friendly hipsters who REALLY want you to enjoy your meal. They were overflowing with gratitude that I stopped by. The sandwiches are a little on the pricier side, but I thought worth it for the foodie vibe that I received when I peered in my to-go box. The menu is very simple with only a few selections...but what they do-- they do well. So happy this is right down the street from where I live. A wonderful addition to the neighborhood. I will be back!

So glad they're in my hood .... AND open on Saturdays. Great coffee, great meat, great eggs, great staff. Just wish they were open earlier in the morning so I could fuel my commute with Four Barrel =(

I'm going to keep this short and sweet since I've only been there once and it is only their second day. That said the ambiance is lovely with lots of dark wood, the people were cheerful, especially considering it was right before closing and they were down to two sandwich choices. We tried one of each - the pastrami reuben and the tofu sammy. I was a little bummed when the sandwiches came and they were a bit on the small size for the $8-10 pricetag, but one bite into them and all doubts were wiped away. Delicious, surprising, satisfying. And exactly filling enough. Happy to see this addition to the downtown lunch options!

Great place for both breakfast and lunch! They have really great food and reasonable on price as well. The atmosphere is also very welcoming and relaxing. One of the best places in the neighborhood by far. Wish they open a bit earlier though so I could stop by before my commute.

A group of us from work went for lunch and luckily left a little before noon to beat the rush. It had rave reviews so we were all looking forward to trying the fare. We had a good recommendation to split two different sandwiches since the flavors are pretty powerful. I shared the pastrami and coca-cola brisket and both were incredibly flavorful but also incredibly greasy. It was delicious although I hated having that greasy feeling afterward. The tuna sandwich was also good and our coworkers enjoyed the pork. The pickle was a little mushy but went well with the tuna. The service as aforementioned wasn't the friendliest so I probably won't be bringing any guests here, but I can see past it for the good food in downtown Oakland.

AMAZING. So glad this spot opened!! The coffee is great, the sandwiches are delicious, and the decor is perfect (have you seen the sliding barn door and repurposed light fixtures??!) My favorite sandwich is a tie between the pastrami and the tri-tip. So good and I love that the meats are made in-house. The ricotta is divine and I love that their tasty bagels are made locally. Also their secret housemade hot sauce is super good too! I'm so excited to see what other tasty delights they'll have to offer in the near future! Highly recommended!!!

This place is fabulous. Love that they're open early and on the weekend. Went in today, for 5 people working it was a taaaad slow in getting our food. The coffee was perfect. The bagels - amazing (and my comparison is the Brooklyn bagel not these things you call bagels out here). Chive cream cheese-more please. My egg sandwich was a bit on the pricey side (and had bacon when I asked for none) but it was amazing. What's on there? Special sauce? Yum, yum

Best reuben in Oakland. BLT is good although I wouldn't mind different bread, everything else I've had has been really good. Not the fastest place to get lunch but well worth the wait.

Just mention the word "Stag" with friends and co-workers and you'll immediately see their facial expression change to a mix of dreamy/lustful; yeah, they're that good! The menu changes all the time and pretty much everything is homemade and handmade; the vibe is urban hip - nice furniture and reclaimed wood throughout - but at the same mellow and inviting. Coffee drinks are good enough to save you an extra trip to Jack London square for Blue Bottle, and that's very telling. So, just go ahead and mention the word "Stag" to your friends and co-workers...

UPDATE: After receiving a reply from Stags Lunchette I'd like to update my review with a reply of my own. I also work very long hours, i also work very hard at my job, and love to be proud at my work, so when i walk into a new coffee shop at 9am to support a new local business in the morning the last thing i want to deal with is a rude cashier, and a snarky reply on your part only further validates my review. The customer ALWAYS comes first, not your staff. Don't build up a bad reputation for your own pride because there are AMPLE options for sandwiches in the area. Good luck with your business.

I came here to write a review because none of the reviews mention the amazing rosemary shortbread cookies. Run, don't walk and go get yourself one of these savory sweet pieces of deliciousness.

Really enjoyed the kale salad and pastrami sandwich. The sandwich bread was way too buttery for my liking, especially since the pastrami is so delectable that you could have it on a brick and it would be great.. The small salad that came with it was overdressed too; the kale salad was perfect though. These small things have no bearings on a solid foundation of good meat and good cheese.

I have been here twice so far, both times for breakfast/brunch. I have tried the fresh ricotta drizzled with honey and nuts, a bagel with cream cheese, smoked trout, pickled onions, tomato, and capers, and a spinach and cheese stuffed croissant. Everything is fresh, delicious, and perfect. Their coffee is rich, the decor is rustic chic, and the people are friendly. I will be back many times.

Run- don't walk! This place served absolutely the BEST BLT I have ever eaten. Everything was perfect. The bread was toasted but soft. The tomatos were perfectly ripe and the bacon was awesome. A treat!

This place is amazing! I had a meatball sandwich, on quality artisan bread, marinara sauce, house made buffalo mozzarella and ricotta cheese. The meatballs were both beef and pork and one hundred percent succulent. Nearly everything is made in house. Looking forward to going back.

Love that the menu changes and that it is minimal items. I hate having to look through extensive "book" menus. Anyways...had the best grilled cheese and salad. Can't wait to try the other items that they offer. Right around the corner from my work and it adds some class to 17th St. !!
