We went in fri night july 31st about 8pm for a birthday dinner, the place was dead,we chose to sit in the lounge area, we sat there for about 10-15 minutes before our server even acknowledged us. She came up just as I was walking up to the bar to get some water. The waitress walks up and asks " how we doing guys'" as if shed already helped us, not to mention she had the disgruntled employee attitude. She took our drink order ( manhattan and some other cocktail that was thrown together, so strong my wife couldnt even drink hers, no straws w/ our cocktails) , we were never offered anything else to drink like maybe some water to chase down the glass full of liquor? We finally track her down as were eating our appetizer ( super small stuffed mushrooms that were Sams club quality ) and order two cokes, she brings us the cokes 10 minutes later with no straws, again we had to ask for straws! While all this is going on , the manager Jay is at the bar chatting with his bartender and waitresses . While were enjoying our steaks they are closing everything down, sweeping around us, essentially kicking us out before they even close. The food was damn good but the service was just terrible! simple things a server should do was completely overlooked( offering water when first seated, coming back w/ in a few minutes to check if the steak was cooked correctly and how everything is) so either Jay is doing a terrible job training his servers or the server we had( super skinny blond w/ glasses ) just didnt care. Im a firm believer that tips are earned not required, she squeeked by w/ a 10% tip because the service was lousy. Everyone that was working this night was complaining how they didnt want to be there, even the manager! i dont think we'll be returning to this place, good food but poorly managed

I just came back from LA for a quick visit. I had such a good time when I stopped by in January for a New Years Day breakfast and enjoyed it so much I decided this time to try dinner. It did not disappoint. The steak here is as good as everyone says. The service was excellent and the beer was cold. When I'm in town, i'm going no where else.

This place has so much character! It's a really fun dining experience, and the food is solid; the steaks are top-notch for the meat eaters, but believe it or not, they have a great salad bar, too. Horseman Lodge just feels so... Flagstaff. A great spot to take visitors for some local flavor.

We have now eaten at this establishment twice in a week. On our first visit, we had Chicken Fried Steak and mashed potatoes. It was really tasty. The salad bar is perfection. It had just the right amount of side dishes, it looks fresh and it tastes amazing. The second time we went, it was for the salad bar but realized that we could order a sirloin steak with the salad bar for $2.00 more. What a deal! This isn't the cheapest place in town, but it is definitely one of the best for steak and salad. Bravo!

14 ounce haystack garlic butter ribeye? Yes, please! Don't mind if I do. It's a perfectly cooked ribeye served with very thin slices of onion and zucchini on the side. Yum! When you order this it comes with unlimited soup and salad bar and when I tell you this is probably the best salad bar that's no exaggeration. Everything is fresh and there's a large variety of toppings in addition to any lettuce you could possibly want. Our waitress was friendly and not overbearing and the restaurant has a laid back vibe. If you're looking for a great steak in Flagstaff this is the place to get it!

I wish I could give it more stars. Our experience here was absolutely phenomenal. We had a private wedding at the courthouse and me and my new husband came here for dinner, just the two of us. He called and made reservations earlier in the day and told them we were getting married and coming here for dinner afterwards. They service and attention we received was more amazing than I can explain. Our server Nate was the perfect balance of attentive but letting us enjoy our night. The owner Steve and general manager Rebecca stopped by a few times to check on us. Everyone kept congratulating us, making our night even more special. Just the service alone gets five stars. But then there is the food..... We had been here many times under the old ownership. It was always good, but we slowly stopped going as much. We shared two meals: the prime rib special and the chicken fried steak. OH MY GOODNESS. The prime rib just melted in our mouths and had such a wonderful smoked flavor. The chicken fried steak was equally delicious. We got it with the Alfredo sauce, which just gave it a little something different over traditional gravy. From start to finish everything was so delicious. I just wanted to thank everyone at the Horsemen Lodge for the wonderful experience. You guys truly exceeded our expectations (which were already very high). I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant to anyone in Flagstaff looking for an amazing meal.

Judging by all the reviews, I must have just visited on a bad night. Nonetheless, my experience was pretty horrid. It seemed as though our server (also "the manager") was waiting on all the tables, so the wait was pretty high, and also matched the pricing. However the quality of the service and food was on par for the pricing prior to the remodel. Back to the server manager guy: I have never heard "I'm not sure" and "I don't know" so much from an employee. Most questions resulted in a deer in the headlights look, followed by a story about how he only knows the "back end stuff" The food was okay, but okay does not justify their pricing. The salad bar was delicious, but everything else fell short. Their "energy drink", referred to by the server as "the one with the lizard" was basically green water, and all the steaks were overcooked. Might give it another try one they have more time to train...

My bf and came up to Flagstaff from Phx.. and we ate our farewell dinner at this place. A farewell to all the awesome weather. I ordered breaded clams for an appetizer and ordered a sheperds pie for my main entree. The breaded clams had too much breading but the clams were very tasty. My sheperds pie was an open face kind of thing, which was interesting but the meat was very tender. My bf ordered wings, he said hey were ok, and he ordered a steak. This is the first time I've seen my bf eat a steak and not use A1 sauce. The steak he ordered was seasoned perfectly was very tender. It just melts in your mouth like butter. Rest assured we will be coming back! *This is late review, we went in April.

Holy cow. Pun intended. This place is ahhhmazing. I had the Horseman Burger, which was sheer perfection. Perfectly cooked burger, pork belly, onion straws and BBQ sauce, hold the cheese please. It's always awesome going to a place that actually understands the meaning of medium rare, and does it. Travel buddy had the ribeye, it was so good, I swear angels on high personally seared & delivered it right to our table. Cool feature about their salad bar (which comes with your meal) is the fresh cooked & chopped bacon crumbles and they have two HUGE BLOCKS of cheese for slicin, dicin and eatin. If you're in the Flagstaff area, I highly recommend visiting here.

I was shocked with all the great reviews. I had a similar experience to another with absolute poor service. When I went up to get my own wine as they had forgotten my drink all I heard for sometime was the complaining about being overworked and being too busy. Salad bar was ok . Nothing worth really mentioning . Once the meal didn't come out for 1 hr ( hburgers and rare steaks) I asked the greeter why so long a wait for food. She was sorry and said she would get the manager. The manager came and turned it around like it was my problem. At this point I knew that it was not just going to go well this night. The steaks were overcooked but by this time it was just simply a bad experience. For the price you pay - should be better quality . I am glad people had great experiences - it has potential . Need to spend time on developing the experience.

Love this restaurant. We have been here several times before and they never fail to provide a great meal with very good service. If you are in Flagstaff and looking for a good steak and a very nice salad bar, this is the place to go.

I thought I posted a review when I was here in March, but in case it didn't go through, this is an excellent stop in Flagstaff. High-quality steaks, fantastic salad bar and a very accommodating staff in what I'm told by a friend is a much cleaner, brighter setting than before (certainly seemed like it to me). I look forward to heading here again!

  • Martin K.

Yes, it's a bit of a detour, but it's worth the trip. I would definitely recommend this place if you're in Flagstaff. I had one of the best baby back ribs ever. We also tried the fried cactus appetizer, which was a bit too tangy for our taste, but the crab cakes were great.

First time after new owners, really enjoyed a great meal and excellent service. We were in the mood for burgers and they didn't disappoint. With the salad/ soup bar and a healthy side it was a big meal, so we took our yummy Mac and Cheese home. Fresh creamed corn was awesome! We'll have to come back for steaks ;-)

Since this has been our neighborhood restaurant for decades, we were worried about the change in ownership; however, it's been wonderful. Same great bar service, fabulous steaks. Now they serve breakfast, which is fantastic.

I would have giving 4 1/2 stars, except the service was mediocre while the food was outstanding. Melt in your mouth Ribeye!!

Me and my friends used to joke about this place "You better be a cowboy to eat there because you're gonna get something in your food". It definitely wasn't the cleanest of places and the food was mediocre. New owners...if you're reading this.... round of applause. When I came back into town the otherweek my friend's were telling me that restaurant had new owners and that everything was awesome. I had to see for myself... I walked in and noticed a lot of the same decorations around, the salad bar was still there, the cool little booths along the side were still there, and it still had that good ol' cowboy feel. Like some of the other reviews said, the decor wasn't cluttered and thrown around any more, it looked like someone actually put some thought into it. So ambiance, check. Secondly, our waitress was very sweet, greeted us right away told us she'd come back for a drink order in a few minutes, and she did. She was very attentive throughout the entire meal. I ordered the 22oz Ribeye because I hadn't had one in a while and when you're at a place like this you need to feel in the zone! So I ordered this huge slab of steak and it was phenomenal. Very juicy, nice crust on the outside, horseradish on the side and mash potatoes. My friend got the Hay Stack Garlic Grilled Ribeye, and WOWZERS... that thing was awesome. I'll be getting that the next time around. Hope this helps and once again, thank you to the new owners for fixing this place up!

Traveling from Flagstaff to Sedona we found this gem. The owner was our server. Her and her husband just bought it a few months back. He has celiac. Never a fun thing to live with, but for me, being gluten sensative, it worked out well. They have a very extensive menu ( wish I was there for breakfast) that is very gluten free friendly. I was there with 2 friends and all of our food was delish! I had the mushroom burger bunless, though they do offer GF buns and it was cooked perfectly. If I am ever coming through town again, I will be sure to stop in. I wish them success in their new business endeavor

  • Neva W.

My family and I had dinner there last night. I had the 6 oz sirloin. It was juicy, tender, and delicious! I recommend this place for anyone craving a steak, t-bone, or prime rib. I definitely will be coming again soon. Our waiter was excellent, we were a party of eight and he certainly took care of us.

I have eaten at the old Horsemen well over 30 times since 1985 while traveling through Flagstaff over the years. I stopped in a couple of weeks ago for my "first visit" to the new place. I was very happy that the tradition continues with the new owners with some welcome enhancements. The interior has been gone over, getting rid of a lot of the clutter while still emitting the ambiance of Flagstaff and its cowboy heritage. The menu has been expanded greatly (this was needed). Lots of choices with cuts of beef and plenty of options for the non red meat eaters. The service was great. Very attentive and friendly waitstaff. Last but not least the salad bar is still there and as great as ever. They even still have the blocks of cheese! Can't wait to stop in again when life brings me to northern AZ.

  • Kirby B.

Great soup & salad bar. It had anything you wanted. Huge blocks of cheese. Everything was fresh and delicious. The soup was homemade baked potato. You could have a meal just with the salad bar. The service was also great. I ordered the 14 oz boneless rib eye with twice baked potato. It was the best steak I've had in a steakhouse. I will definitely be back next time I'm in the area.

Terrific on all counts. Love the layout includes smaller, more private spaces. Decor is perfect - very interesting ranch theme without being kitschy. Service was attentive and engaging. Our breakfast was traditional, solid and well executed. We found the daily special tasty and very good value! Would not hesitate to return when again in the area.

I was pleased with the food under the old owners but I was always put off by it feeling dirty, the animals on the walls were covered with dust made you wonder about the kitchen. The new management keep the feel but removed a lot of the clutter. The place has a much cleaner feeling and the food remains great. I was very happy with them having REGULAR hours and now open for breakfast. I love the country feel when you drive up and the young ladies approach you on horses to show you your parking place. Price is a little higher than most places but the quality of meat is AWESOME. If you are looking for a steak I would highly recommend the Fillet ~ amazing and cooked to order. The salad bar is great too! If you are looking for a burger you have come to the right place, 100% black angus. The quality of meat comes out in the flavor of your burger. The service we received was also great ~ our waitress treated us like family, she was so personal and took the time to make sure everything was right. Checked back several times to ensure we were happy customers, which we were!!! I would HIGHLY recommend Horsemen Lodge ~ congrats to the new owner they did a great job! BTW the bar looks awesome too, I plan on going back to try it out!

I went here with a group of friends last week for breakfast. The service was excellent, as was the food. The portions are large and everything's a great value. I was a bit bummed I wasn't there for lunch because I wanted one of those burgers! Would have gone back if I'd had the time.

I had been to this place a couple years ago and thought it was nothing special, but some friends wanted to go so I joined them. I was SO IMPRESSED with the changes made by the new owners! Seriously, you have to check it out. Still has a western feel, but now feels classic instead of dingy. The new menu has a focus on good quality ingredients, which really shows!

It was about 5 years ago that I last came to Horsemen Lodge and it was still under the old ownership, and had the salad bar and a burger. It was just "OK" back then, but new ownership has made a serious effort to get the best meat and ingredients for the menu and salad bar. Night and day. Been here for dinner and breakfast (which is new for this restaurant), and although a bit more spendy, its worth it. The food has improved dramatically. I like that they kept most of the vintage furniture pieces in place to keep the ambiance authentic to historic flag, which is definitely the bread and butter of the decor. Will be back!

Great ambiance. The steaks are great, awesome salad bar, but stay away from the crab cakes.

  • Laura P.

Under new ownership and just opened this week. They kept the name which was a very smart move. The inside is very much the same, it still had the same feel which I think is important. We have not had dinner yet but did enjoy some smoked wings last night. They are excellent! Breakfast this morning was fantastic! It might be a couple dollars more than some places but the quality and quantity is well worth it. I had to bring home leftovers. The service is great as is the coffee and I am a coffee snob. I look forward to our first dinner. Dinner is pricey but that is due to the quality of their beef. Don't let that stop you from trying it!

  • Ed B.

We stopped here for dinner during vacation when driving down from the Grand Canyon to Sedona. Service was very attentive and friendly, and the ambiance was pleasantly casual. We've had better steaks before, but our dinners were pretty good and portions were generous and the price was reasonable. If we find ourselves hungry in Flagstaff again, we'd return.

  • Kevin C.

If you're up for an appetizer go for the wings, slightly smoked, lots of good quality meat and very flavorful sauce. The salad bar is great too. I had the chicken fried steak. It was absolutely huge, and amazing. Highly recommend.

Horsemen's has been sold and is under new management/ownership. As a local I have been waiting anxiously for the grand re-opening to see if it was better or worse. Here's my take (it's kind of long but hopefully informative!) Here's the skinny: Overall, it's pretty much the same, which I think is a good thing. Glad they didn't change it completely. They kept the name (smart move) but with a really nice new sign, and the interior decor is nearly the same (minus all of the chaps/ranch gear except for in the Bill Owen room...it kind of looks empty without them). The salad bar fixins and the menu are about the same, but prices seemed to be a bit more than they were. Steaks were between $16-$42, Entrees between $18-$32 and burgers were $15-$19. Almost all meals came with soup, salad and bread. The food: We ordered Lemon garlic chicken and the 6oz sirloin. Both were very good. I ordered my steak medium well and when I cut into it, it was barely medium rare. I HATE sending food back but I did in this instance, and the waitress was very apologetic. When I got it back, it didn't look any different. (Apparently the man at the next table had the same problem). She saw that I didn't eat it and apologized again. They've only been open a week so I figure the cook is probably getting used to the grille, no biggie I guess. Hopefully they'll get it figured out soon! Service was good, waitress was very nice and personally apologized for the under cooked steak (wasn't her fault). I see they are open for breakfast but I did not see that menu or prices. Being a local, I am personally skeptical of how successful a breakfast offering would be as I imagine it will probably be a bit pricey for local tastes. I think they should probably stick to lunch and dinner but who knows, maybe it will work. Looking forward to going back to try the prime rib and hopefully its as good as it was before, and maybe by then the kinks will be worked out. =)

Under new ownership and very pleased to see the new owners have kept the name from prior owners. Food is very delicious and plentiful for anyone. Great place to bring a family for a good night out. They do have a children's menu that will please any picky eater. The servers are excellent and very attentive to your needs. Will be coming back often to enjoy this restaurant.

New owners and so far so good. I think they can only get better from here. Large party and we were a handful to our server, but she did a great job. Everyone ordered something different but I enjoyed the prime rib. It was pretty good, not the best, it could have had a better crust but it was darn good as served. The cornbread is great, served hot out of the oven and served with soft butter, a huge plus. Salad bar and menu options were very nice. I hope to visit again real soon.

Crave their tamale & eggs ! So good.also their huevos rancheros.love that they serve bfast till 2. Reason not 5 stars, they ran out of iced tea & served a very watered down version. Kept hearing them say they were out of stuff at other tables. Maybe delivery truck didn't make it. Food is so worth it

Went there for dessert and just to check it out.. The server sucked! Asked what the soup was and she was like "i don't know i just got here" are you serious! carrot cake was over powered by a strawberry sauce... not meant to be paired together... the wings and presentation were good. the server, she sucked A$$.. i asked the other server dude if he could take over... he was like eeehhh...looked at her... sorry no tip... crappy service.....!! but overall the place is very clean.... just a bad experience with that "server" unknown..

Love this place! I worked here when I was 16 and the place has always been special to me. I love seeing the life brought back to this place by the new owners! The service is incredible, the place is always really clean and the food is to die for! By far one of the BEST restaurants Flagstaff has! Breakfast has to be our favorite there, it's such a great way to start a day!

New owners have revitalized the Horsemen's Lodge institution. Warm, inviting yet still charming interior maintaining much of the original historic charm. The salad bar is fresh and clean with a very enticing variety. Highly recommend asking about the steaks, I was told the new owners spent a lot of time researching and selecting top quality beaf. I had a nice steak salad with arugula and some very tasty morsels of steak. Well balanced with a house made balsamic vinaigrette. We ordered a couple of deserts to share: Chocolate cake, carrot cake and a warm pumpkin bunt cake. Each came with fresh whipped cream in lemon, almond and plain. Warm pumpkin bunt cake and a cup of coffee by the fire on a chilly evening? Well worth it! Bottom Line: Good food, reasonable prices. High quality steak for a true steakhouse dinner. Classic atmosphere.

Excellent and very flavorful ribeye steak. All you can eat soup and salad. The soup was beef stew and was very good. Loved the mushrooms in the soup. Cornbread could be a little sweeter. Service was good. It was the night after Valentine's Day. Have been coming here every year for about 17 years. The new decor is nice.

He had the crab cake and filet mignon and he describes it as 'the best he's ever had' and he's as picky as they come. The cornbread was sweet and spicy. I had the filet mignon with butter sauce laced with rosemary with a side of Cabernet mushrooms - it laid comfort on my tongue - yes it was simply delicious. We both give it a 5

Great food, staff and mamagement! We were vacationing and in the area, found this place on trip advisor. The 5 stars was on the money. Organic beef, delicious, nice salad/soup bar. Perfect in every way...only problem, they're not in Charlotte, NC.!

Hubby and I took a chance going here on a rare date night out. Having not been here for about 8 years as the food was terrible then we were very optimistic about the place seeming to be new. The inside was much brighter than I remembered and the staff is very friendly and welcoming. The food is another thing. Hubby ordered the prime rib which the outside was inedible and the rest he made edible with copious amounts of horseradish. My ribeye steak was just eh but I really would have loved some steak sauce to make it have any flavor. Overcooked and bland. They still have a salad bar which I think is silly in a supposed nicer steak place. With undercooked pasta salad in the mix as well. We also ordered crab stuffed mushrooms with no crab to be found. As a sides we got the twice baked potato which was ok and Mac n cheese. The Mac n cheese was just weird having some kind of peppers and corn in it! We were totally disappointed in this place and then after leaving and it hitting us, hey we just paid a ton of money and that sucked, we called the owner to let them know their shortcomings , but after waiting on hold for 10 solid minutes the owner would hardly let hubby get his comments in before rather rudely interrupting after each part hubby brought up. Won't be going back here for sure.

The night my husband and I went it was crowded. We met the new owner that night and they had doubled up on service because they had a banquet that night. The food was fabulous and I have to admit the meat and mashed potatoes were much better than Mastro's in Scottsdale, AZ, pretty hard to top but they did. The service was great, salad bar was awesome also. I would highly recommend this restaurant the western atmosphere is great they did up date it some but also kept some of the original stuff. Very clean too.

Under new ownership, The Horseman Lodge is stellar! The menu has been revamped and has everything you crave. My meal was perfectly cooked and my server was sweet as pie! I will definitely be bring my friends and family back here regularly. Such a great spot with the juiciest steaks in town.

Had really high hopes since new ownership was announced so we decided to dine here for my sons 20th birthday. From the time we sat down I felt as if we were inconveniencing our waitress. She was not very friendly. She took our order and then told us that it would be 45 minutes until our food would be out because they were so busy. We had 2 young children with us that were starving and so that in itself was not a good thing. During this 45 min we saw our waitress twice. Salad Plates were not being cleared and drinks were not being filled. We were stacking plates at the far end of our table to get them out from in front of us and even then other servers walked by and didn't pick them up. Then comes the food. 2 meals over cooked, 2 meals under cooked and the others were ok. They should note on their menu that their Mac and cheese and creamed corn and anything else they prepare this way are southwestern style. We got there at 6:30 and were not done until after 8 and with a $235.00 bill the meal was just OK. Sadly we will probably not be back. As a larger party I would suggest you take your party somewhere else.

Based on service alone. As so far we have been here an hour. As soon as we ordered we were told it would be about 45 min. Before our food was ready. 6:30pm res for 9 people. I hope the food is better. Well if you order steak you are pretty safe. 2 bone in ribeyes overcooked but tasty. Fish sent back underdone. Jumbo stuffed shrimp underdone on the stuffed side. They could only put 6 meals on a ticket so our table was served in shifts which did not matter because only our server delivered plates 2 at a time anyhow. So with all that said good luck dining here!

Driving there could seem out of the way but it's totally worth it! The cornbread they bring you is so moist and the sweet butter that it's served with is so good...and WOW what a salad/soup bar (it came with my meal) great selection of all sorts of toppings and dressings and both soups were delicious! I had the 12oz Sirloin with the merlot/garlic butter and it legit melted in my mouth. We had plenty leftover for dinner that night...and it tasted just as good reheated! Our server (pretty sure her name was Rebecca) was super sweet and attentive. If we are ever out this way again we will go back!

Very nice place, friendly staff and owners. Roomy parking lot and nice clean environment. The salad bar that is included with the entrees is very decent, including soups and cheeses. The presentation of the food was very nice and the ingredients seem to be very fresh and good quality. Hubby had the filet and I had the haystack ribeye, with potatoes au gratin and creamy spinach, respectively. They seem to care about customer satisfaction and that is always a good thing. Our steaks were very good and I think I ended up having 3 meals our of that ribeye : )

The first time I visited Horsemen's was over 30 years ago under the original ownership. Back then it was THE place for a steak. Since then, Flagstaff has attracted many fine restaurants and Horseman's fell off my list. I heard that Steve Alvin (Northern Pines restaurant) bought it and refreshed the interior and expanded the menu, so I and eight of my closest friends made a reservation for my birthday recently. The food and service put Horsemen's right back to the top of my favorite places for steak. Satisfying nine people's taste buds and service expectations is a challenge, but Horsemen's hit it out of the park! All but one had steak with ribeye was the popular choice cut. The special that night was a $20.00 (big bargain) New York strip that thoroughly enjoyed by those who ordered it. The salad bar was fresh and extensive and nearly ruined my appetite for the 14oz ribeye. I can't wait to head out there for breakfast, lunch or happy hour. There are many restaurants much closer to where I live, but I'll drive 3-4 more miles to enjoy another meal at Horsemen's.

Oh my goodness, this place was absolutely AMAZING! The service was hands down the best I've received since I've been in AZ...our waitress Rebecca was the BEST. She was so good to my entire family and spoiled the heck out my two kids. The food was so DELICIOUS!!!! When I come back to Flagstaff AZ they will definitely be seeing us again. Thank you to the best staff ever...and the horses were so pretty.

First time back since new owners took over. I love the remodeled look of the place Rustic southwest. Servers were very nice, but slow. It wasn't that busy. It took a while to get our drinks order made, and food to arrive. The salad bar was okay. The best part for me was the fresh coleslaw, potato salad , pasta salad. Yum. The menu is more expensive, but it was worth it. Our dinners were fantastic. Well seasoned, hot, juicy, and my baby back ribs fell right off the bone. Delicious. I really liked the right out of the over cornbread, and cold, sweet butter. Very nice. Our family will definitely be come back.
