Don't you love finding that local cheap delicious restaurant in a new town. This is it. Hidden gem. Best chicken fried steak I've ever had .. and I don't even like chicken fried steak. I was recommended by a friend and now gonna spread the word. This dinner has been here since the 40s and its old fashion charm is irresistible. On top of that .. they have Chinese food!

The egg rolls were the best my husband and I have ever had. We felt led astray as the chicken fried steak was bland at best with canned/frozen veggies and a dry roll. Salad had brown lettuce and egg drop soup was super bland.

Very nice service and fast. Sorry to say the food was pretty bland. We were there for breakfast, we got a lot of food but they really need to use some spices and veggies. A shame because I think they could really have something with a few improvements.

Came in after a local newspaper article featured this diner. Warm, inviting owner, delicious pancakes, good omelet, generous portions. Would like to see the place have a deep cleaning.

It was my first visit here in many years. I had the chicken fried steak for lunch. You will find real bargains here for Chinese and diner food. This place is a real local western hangout. Do not expect a new modern decor as this place has been untouched for 40 years.

I've been eating here since I was in grade school. I've only had one thing in the last 25+ years: Cheese Burger Deluxe. Love it. I don't get here very often anymore, but I always make a stop here when I'm in town. Service is quick, the burgers and fries are good, and the price is more than reasonable. Stop by and give it a try!

We went here for breakfast . It was almost completely empty while the trendier Martanne's had people waiting. I love the food next door but the ambiance at this place wins hands down. The breakfast prices too. While the food wasn't particularly interesting it was good for your basic American breakfast. Nice vibe.

Like the previous posters, this place doesn't look clean, but the food is very good and reasonable. The waitress was very friendly and recommended the War Mein for me (noodle soup with meat and bok choy) and I wasn't able to finish it. Kind of a strange atmosphere, but I certainly enjoyed it,. Huge & tasty portions.

This place looks like a 50's Chinese food diner. Yes, you read that right. But ignore how it looks. You can get a decent burger for a decent price and support a local business all at the same time. I've never ordered anything but a cheeseburger and it is always just fine.

I've been going to this little cafe for several years. It's kinda' run down and the ambience isn't much but the food is good. I've only gone here for Breakfast and for lunch. Breakfast is good but what can you do to eggs? EAch day there's a special menu for lunch...two menus one is chinese and the other is American. Their chinese is always good and fairly authentic according to a friend who was raised in China. The American is equally good with their fried chicken being the most raved about. Both menus are $6.99 Can't go wrong there

Nasty. Don't go there if you value cleanliness or good food. Looks like a quaint downtown diner from the outside, but don't be fooled! That's really all there is to say about Grand Canyon Cafe.

Tasty food, large portions, great prices! What more is there to look for?!! I went with my family of 7 and thought all the dishes tasted delicious. They had a good mix of chinese and american dishes. The chicken fried steak is a must try- loved their gravy. And their pancakes- I've never had such fluffy, delicious pancakes before! I like the 1960's diner decor and enjoyed eating at a place where the locals frequent. enjoy!!

Breakfast not bad but nothing to Brag about! Pleasant waitress but not overly attentive. The Atmosphere could be called quaint or nostalgic, but an obvious lack of maintenance or effort to keep things clean or in order detracts from what could otherwise be an enjoyable trip back in time. Without the proper atmosphere the restaurant's cash only policy seems inappropriate by today's standards and provoked me to revert to the old standard of 15% rather then 20% when leaving a tip. I felt the prices were a little to high overall and found myself purposely leaving some coins in the tip rather the rounding up so as not to exceed 15%....I will probably not return

Tina and Fred do an excellent job serving many home grown vegetables from their farm (the farm is located in Camp Verde . ) If you want to see true locals of Flagstaff , check out this place , you will not be disappointed . Daily specials are unique and priced very well.

I've always wanted to eat here since it's about the only remaining original cafe on Route 66 in Flagstaff. Today it happened after running into rain on the Call of the Canyon Trail in Sedona and deciding to see if the fall leaves are turning here yet. (We are a little early for that, even at 7000'.) I had the tuna sandwich which came naked with nothing but a couple biting pickles. I really don't think the chef likes to prepare tunafish for this was not a good tasting sandwich. Sorry to have to give it 1 star. My partner, however, chose kung pao and pronounced it delicious. It came with a side of rice. The cafe bears signs of its age and appears to be very popular with the locals. All in all it was a pleasant way to enjoy some coffee and get out of the cold and rain and visit an historic restaurant.

A longtime institution but the experience was fairly mediocre. There's a good mix of food here but it seems high priced, especially considering that you must pay cash and can't use a debit/credit card. I hope that was a temporary thing, because we had to buy the cheapest items on the menu to save spending cash. Those items were hamburgers. First, it took a while for the server to come over. It was not busy in the least. And the burgers weren't too grand. Hearty and big, but cooked a bit too much. They don't include fries (or potatoes as they refer to them on the menu) unless you order them, so it's just a burger with toppings and no sides. That's kind of weird but I suppose good if you're watching your calories. I would be iffy about going back to try the rest of the menu if I must bring cash. I'm not against the idea, but in this day and age, it seems they would be wise to have and keep a working credit card machine.

I wasnt looking for a "tourist " experience on route 66 but just happened on this place passsing thru on business. What a gem. Original old dinner in great shape with great people and great food. Get here before time takes this place away from us. Loved it.

This place has a great burger. A bit greasy... but worth the bellyache. Apparently, they have the finest Chinese food in town. I will have to return.

Been coming here off and on for about 30 years. Last night was my first visit in about 5 years as I no longer live in Flagstaff. My wife has always been a fan and visits more Than I do. They were out of steaks i used to order and like so I Ordered the fried chicken dinner last night. Taste has not changed, consistent and good. Used to get Campbell's soup and salad w meal now it is either or. Roll was rock hard.It is what it is decor, service and all. The owners are very nice hard working people. I noticed the prices had nearly doubled since my last visit. Can only attribute that to inflation and sky high!! Flagstaff rents.

Can I say health department, the waiter with dark hair is eating Fritos then wiping her fingers on her butt. With the same hand grabs a plastic cups, scoops the ice with the same hand that's been in her mouth and on her butt and takes it to a customer. Manger sits in back corner booth playing with her hair. Soup is flavorless looks like dirty water. Waitress says she's cant make ice cream shakes cause the four tables in here have her slammed. Now both food servers hang out with the manager. Avoid this place unless you got and hour to kill and a cast iron stomach. If the option of 0 starts was available it would be a negative.

This cafe certainly does not stand out for it's cleanliness, speedy service or enthusiastic waitresses but it does serve delicious home-style Chinese and American food at reasonable prices and generous portions. This cafe is unpretentious and serves classic Chinese comfort foods like Egg Foo Young and Chow Mein. Their hamburgers are more flavorful and better quality than Mama Burger's and if you enjoy calf's liver this cafe has some of the best in Flagstaff. Obviously the Grand Canyon Cafe is not a place to take a date or enjoy a high class meal but it does do a great job of offering homemade comfort food.

I'm all for the kitschy mismatching decor; it was pretty amusing to see red paper lanterns and Budai next to a mounted sea bass and paintings of girls in bonnets. Most of the booths have a tabletop jukebox that's sadly inoperable, but fun to look at. That being said, this place is in dire need of better maintenance. The wood partitions were peeling, the seating all ripped, fluorescent lighting too harsh. I normally don't pay much attention to general decor, but this was just distracting. There were also hug piles of newspapers stuffed up in a corner that gave off a musty smell. We skipped over the Chinese offerings (already eat plenty of that back home!) and ordered some diner food. My Hamburger was just okay. It came with lettuce, tomato, pickles, grilled onions, and two strips of bacon. The patty was wider than the buns, so it stuck out over the edges, which I though was a little funny. My tablemates' dishes were pretty good. Solid food to fill you up on the 66...just eat with your eyes closed.

This is a 3.5 couldn't give it a 4. Not that it's bad, it's one of those places that it is what it is. It's a time warp. Like a twilight zone flashback. When we first walked in I noticed the worn out Formica surfaces and the old snack bar seating. If you like vintage un touched un glamorized and as it was this is the place for you. They've been around for 70 years! There's 2 sides to the menu the Chinese side and traditional diner food. Our server was sweet and moved at a relaxed pace. Great family diner.

I like the "nothing has changed since whenever" decor, but my husband claimed that it looked dirty. We spent a few days in flagstaff on vacation and saw this place on Yelp and thought it sounded great - I don't eat Chinese food, so he rarely eats it on vacation. This sounded perfect - a combo of diner food and Chinese. We wee also starving because we'd gotten up at 2:30 to get to the south rim by sunrise and stayed till noon and just made it back to Flagstaff. I got the country-fried steak, which was pretty good. The roll was terrible, and I never met a piece of white bread I didn't like. Husband and daughter got Chinese and barely touched it. He likes authentic food (spent a month in China going to non-touristy places) and is, of course, used to Americanized buffet and carryout places - but still thought it was pretty awful. Oh, and service was slow. After our entrees came out, she said, "oh, you were supposed to have soup- do you still want it?" to my husband and daughter, to which they responded yes. Brought it and still never brought my salad. Just a disappointment, after the good reviews.

I have been going here for years and love the food. However, I recently had a bad experience with the service. My boyfriend and I decided to have the lunch special as they have a different lunch special every day. I ordered the American and he ordered the Chinese lunch special. We both voiced "lunch special" to our waitress. Everything was great until we received our bill. Our bill was the regular price of our meals. When I explained to the waitress that we both ordered the lunch special, she denied that we ordered the "lunch special." After going back and forth between the restaurant owner and us, the customers. The owner agreed to knock off a few dollars. We walked away disappointed, embarrassed, and upset. Clearly, the waitress messed up on our order and we did not even get an apology. I will not go back again.

This cafe is is described as American Traditional . It is that. It's been here over 70 years and I've watched people excitedly cross paths here here who'd dine at booth 4 on special occasions over 50 years ago. Not much has changed, except people's outward appearance. The Cafe is spotless. Some of finer points no longer operate, like the neon women and men's room signs, and the refrigerated pie case, but the place stands, as-built at the height of railroad and the ramp-up of Route 66 travel across the American Southwest. In many older well-used diners, the upholstery is worn and torn. Not here. Replacement has been made where necessary, the original seating maintained, and if you've got Route 66 or railroad nostalgia, stop here. Half the menu is Chinese, focusing on Chinese menu items developed in this country for miners, railroad workers and travelers. Chop suey, egg foo-young, etc. The other half is USA Chop House. Burgers, steaks, chops, etc. April 2012, Lucille had Chinese vegetable soup to ease her ailing constitution. She got a giant Chinese bowl of chicken broth loaded with noodles, bokchoy, scallions, bean sprouts and other fresh, healthy veggies. She took 1/3 home. Mom got pork chops, mashed potatoes and white gravy and vegetables. She ate what she could, like it, and took half home. D and me had burgers and fries. Hand pressed patty, lettuce, tomato, pickle, soft bun and excellent, red hot, hand cut fries. When things get super busy, the service may slow down. Take some of the personal sown time this may present, and investigate the folk art, fish art, and art deco architecture. You want Route 66 chop house and grill dining? This is your stop. Great nighttime neon.

Outstanding food, downscale decor, friendly service. Tempting to give them 5 stars - I guess I'm marking them down slightly for the somewhat "rustic" decor and the fact that they don't take credit cards. They offer both American and Chinese food and we sampled from both menus. My wife had a breakfast omelette (even though it was quite late at night) and enjoyed it a lot. I had the pork fried rice and the grilled cheese sandwich on sourdough. The pork fried rice was very good and the portion was large. The grilled cheese sandwich is a perfect snack. It was cooked perfectly, the bread was golden brown, the cheese had plenty of flavor and it was only $2. The service was very friendly and earned a generous tip from us. Great value for money. Definitely a place to eat in Flagstaff if you've got some cash with you and you aren't bothered by the sort of beat-up looking interior.
