Wandered in cruising down Rt 66 looking for a place to eat....pleasantly surprised. My guy ordered a taco and enchilada ala carte, they were huge and packed with shredded beef. I had the beef chimi. Mine was good but one bite of his enchilada and wow! It was so fresh, the corn tortilla was incredible. How can a tortilla taste so good you are wondering? Because it was fresh and they make them in house. It will be hard to eat packaged tortillas after this. The shredded beef was a little more red chile than I prefer but good. The guacamole on the side of my chimi was fresh and chunky, perfect. Nice to know someplace still takes the time to make real food that you can actually taste every bite. Next we time we roll through Flagstaff we will stop in again.

Service was fine, nothing special. Refills not offered and chips not refilled either. Lunch chimi was fine, rice was not great. Prices were a bit high. Everything was just mediocre. Hard in Flagstaff to beat La Fonda and I can't say that Agave has anything that would keep me coming back.

Not bad, atmosphere was welcoming and the staff is super friendly, our server, Jose was attentive even though he had a lot of tables to wait on. The decor was typical Mexican restaurant fare, but it wasn't over the top. The food was good, and we all left stuffed.

The best Mexican food in Flagstaff! Great ambiance and decor! Our new favorite! Tostadas were great as well as chile relleno. Loved the salsa!

This place really hit the nail on the head. I love this style of Mexican food. Plus, it's the only place in Flagstaff you can get a molcajete!

I was incredibly impressed. Great experience from the beginning to the end. Great staff and very fresh food. I ordered the veggie burrito and the veggies were really fresh and sauteed perfectly. I will definitely be back...with more friends.

We are always on the hunt for good Mexican food, my husband and I kept our orders simple burritos and tacos both dishes were good. Loved the homemade chips and the homemade refried beans those are hard to find at most Mexican restaurants in Flagstaff. Decor was nice, restaurant was clean and service was friendly.

Two things, Queso Fundido Cheese Dip and the Fried Ice Cream, HOLY COW MMMMM! I wasn't too impressed with my food but the Husband loved his. We will be going back again. Be prepared, a little Pricey but worth it.

Looking for CASA BONITA in Flagstaff, but got closed and the building demolished, found this excellent restaurant. AWESOME, same or better tasting plates, similar menu, awesome service. I recommend it. To those whose miss CASA BONITA taste, go to Agave, you wont be dissapointed

Last night was our third visit to Agave. We hadn't been since March. Our first two experiences there were great. The food and service were better than any other Mexican food options here in Flag. Last night's food was terrible and flavorless, although there was a nice mariachi who serenaded us. Bummer this place is going downhill so rapidly!

I really wanted to like the food more. The dining area looked nice, but the chairs are probably the most uncomfortable I've ever sat in...looks aren't everything. The service was good and the complimentary chips and salsa were good. But the food was priced a little high for the taste and portion size. I had the fish tacos and they tasted like the fish had freezer burn. The tortillas tasted fine but they were flour and so they couldn't hold up with the sauce, lime juice, and salsa; that's why most places serve them in two corn tortillas. The kids bean & cheese burrito was tiny for $7 and they were out of high chairs when we were there. All in all it wasn't awful but it wasn't good either, no need for me to go back.

An unfortunate disappointment. The chips were heavy and over-baked, the salsa was little more than tomato juice with some tomatoes, cilantro and peppers thrown in. The shrimp were largely not deveined. They've elected not to use high quality ingredients which eliminates any possibility of creating dishes in the rich, flavorful Mexican tradition. The food is inauthentic but adequate if you want a quick lunch and have a fat wallet. I wouldn't recommend this establishment, which is unfortunate, because they enjoy a fun view of Route 66 and the passing trains. There are definitely better places in Flagstaff to get your Mexican food fix.

Awesome chimichangas - not heavily fried like some places. Great food, fast service. Would happily come back when I drive through Flagstaff again sometime.

Food was ok but pricey. $8.50 for a house Margarita! Recognized some of the staff from the now closed, Plaza Bonita but they were much less attentive here. May try this place again when they have been open longer.

Second time to have lunch. Food tasted better the second time but still bland. Very noisy and there were only 12 people at the early lunch. Parking is not easy and there is no handy cap parking. Even difficult for someone with a cane to enter the restaurant.

Tried this restaurant for the first time tonight with my beautiful girlfriend. We were both very impressed. As we walked in we were greeted by the hostess and promptly seated. The decor was perfect-friendly, bright, and welcoming. Before we knew it we had chips and salsa on our table and we're getting out drink orders placed. The waiter asked us if we liked spicy things-we do- so he offered to bring us some special salsa that's a little spicier than their normal salsa. It was great! We both got our drinks right away, and ordered our food. They food came out quickly and was very hot! It was delicious. There was a party going on in the back room that sounded like a blast too. People sounded like they were having a great time. The food was great, the service was great, and we will definitely be back! The only problem I foresee if parking, there isn't a lot and this place is sure to become very popular!

Worst mexican food i've ever tasted.............bland, bland no flavor what so ever! Waitress charged for the dinner fajitas, not the lunch fajtas. Salsa was horrible tomato sauce with hot sauce and call it good ick!

  • A. J.

This place hit all the right notes. Service was attentive and quick. Questions were answered pleasantly. The tropical margarita was great but expensive. My chimi was the best I've ever had; the outside was like a pastry instead of a heavily fried dough. Others had combo plates and all were very happy with it. Had an appetizer of Nopal Tolugueno and it was excellent. I highly recommend Agave. Cost was around $70 for 4' including the pricey margarita.

Don't be deceived by the external building, the attached motel, and the crappy parking. This place is great! Good food that is well priced. We have been 3 times and will keep it on our list of places to eat. Looking forward to them setting up catering!

We tried this new place and it was great! ! Awesome service and delicious food! We had the Carne asada, tamale, tacos and margaritas. Loved it all.

Wonderful generous portion of machejtos (?) dunno how to spell. I've had lots and lots of Mexican food but this is the first time I had this wonderful entree. Posted for two to share could easily feed four incredibly well flavoured. Waiter "Angel" was sweet, funny and very helpful. Might be my new Mexican fave. Margs a little skimpee (but yummy) for $, this is why 4 not 5 stars. Definitely will return.

  • Rion T.

Agree with Regina , S. Food was extremely bland . I had the Arroz con pollo, and it was terrible , it had no flavor , extremely over sauced. Kids had carné Asada, not only was it terrible it was $15.99 a plate holy $#/+ , It is fries and bland meat . My wife had carnitas tacos , also no flavor . She said the rice was decent. But the beans were also terrible. We also ordered the cheese dip and they came out half full and barely heated. As for the service the servers have "0" personality. to be fair atleast the ones we had that night . I alway try to give a place a few tries before giving my two cents and this is the fourth and last time we will be dining here. We will stick with lafondas , Kachina and nanas when we visit her . Good luck and may your taste buds not deceive you!

Decided to try "the new place" and was very pleasantly surprised. Don't be fooled by the crummy hotel in the back; the restaurant is clean, brightly painted and decorated nicely. Staff was friendly and our server Kris very attentive-even asked if we wanted hotter salsa which was good. And hot. I had the chicken mole and it was delicious. Steve had the red chile and it was very good, just a little sweet for his taste. Beans and rice were freshly made. We'll go back.

Great food! Salsa was amazing! This was a great find thanks to my phenomenal man who recommended we try it out!! I had the house margarita which was the best margarita I have had in a long time! I not only recommend the house margarita but also the fiesta margarita. Our server Angel was awesome! He was very attentive and polite! We will be coming here on our next visit to Flag.

Don't let the exterior of the restaurant fool you. Tucked in a dumpy little motel hides a feast waiting to ensnare your taste buds. Money was well spent decorating the interior. When busy it can be kind of noisy inside but don't let that be a reason not to stop for a bite to eat. The food is awesome and they have a huge selection to choose from. The staff is friendly and fast. I definitely will be going back!

    (4)
  • Eric R.

Excellent. On a par with the best mexican food in Flag. HUGE portions, great crispy chips, superb sauces. The decor is bright, lively and fun. I have zero complaints; this was a great meal.

  • Neightrix S.

My family and I had lunch on Monday the restaurant wasn't super busy (which I prefer) we were greeted right away and shown to our preferred table without hesitation. Chips and salsa were fresh especially the hot salsa. Our bar server was average. Lunch came out correct, hot and within 20 min of ordering. Only service area needed of improvement is anticipating guests needs and drink refills. I'm looking forward to returning because the food was delicious the right portion, reasonably priced and very clean. Doesn't look like very much from the outside but I would make this place a first recommendation!

  • Matthew M.

Good! They were short staffed but still managed to hold it together. Big props for making me an adobada chimichanga on the fly, thats good service. The adobada was authentic as far as flavor goes. The presentation of the meal was great. The portions were good. Some were saying "too expensive" in other reviews. The chimi was big and $8.99 is a good price, considering its a sit-down restaurant, not a cafeteria. Only thing I'd love to see is a salsa bar or just more choices of salsa. Bravo, hope these folks stay around.

  • Emilee K.

Agave was great! Their service was quick and efficient and a friendly staff. Their chips and salsa tasted fresh and the salsa had a lot of flavor. Also, their margaritas were great the raspberry tropical Margarita tasted like fresh raspberries, and the house Margarita wasn't too sweet. Their service was quick and our food was out promptly. I had the Chile rellanos and they were great. Their food was cooked perfectly and has tons of flavor. As a local I will definitely be back here!

  • Penny P.

We were at Agave last week. It's cute and clean, well -decorated. The chips had a different texture and taste, and I liked it. The regular salsa was good. I didn't try the hot stuff. The first order of chips and salsa is free, afterward is $2/order. I would have happily paid for another order. I had the carnitas, and they were meaty and flavorful. The beans and rice were good, and the guac was great! They have a great prickly pear lemonade....try it! The price seemed a bit high, but i wouldn't rule out another visit.

Went here for early dinner and really enjoyed the food and atmosphere . I had the pollo oaxaqueno which was very good. My husband had a combo. Enchiladas and taco and he said it was very good. We will come here again when we are in town. Give it a try.

Up to this afternoon, there was only one good Mexican restaurant in Flagstaff. That changed today. Agave has risen to the top of my favorite Mexican restaurants. The extensively remodeled colorful dining room and bar area greats you as soon as you walk in. The extensive menu overwhelmed us with many authentic south of the border recipes. The wait staff was friendly and very attentive. Getting down to the food: I had a combo platter with two crispy shredded beef tacos and a beef enchilada. I thought I was a big eater until the wonderful plate arrived. My very significant other had a shredded beef taco and a cheese enchilada. Everything was fresh and wonderfully flavored. Drinks: Draft DosXX amber and a big delicious margarita! The fresh thick chips and delicious salsa topped off this wonderful dining experience. Agave has become our #1 stop when craving Mexican cuisine. We'll be spreading the word to all of our part time friends and neighbors. Yum...yum!

  • Sophie W.

It's your standard tex-mex. It's hard to make anything taste bad when it's covered in cheese! It's not gourmet authentic Mexican cuisine, but you probably figured that out already. Everything I've gotten has been tasty, I don't really think it's overpriced like other reviewers seem to think... expect to spend $15-ish on a meal and get a ton of food. Not too shabby! Domestic brews are a bit expensive for what you're getting, but the food is appropriately priced.

Visiting flagstaff for move in day at NAU, went to this restaurant for some lunch yesterday. I ordered the taco shredded beef with rice and beans, delicious! He taco wasn't the best I've had but he rice with beans were pretty good. The chips were different, the salsa was more like taco sauce and not a tomato salsa but this could just be my lack of Mexican food knowledge. I would go back to try the pazole, it was a special but we were unaware until we left and saw the sign.

  • Grace A.

There was only one table when we arrived at 4:30. Our drinks had nothing in them alcohol wise. The food took FOREVER and 2 people in our group got their food 15 mins after the rest of us. Chips were all broken and the salsa is watery. Gross!!!! I would have given zero stars but can't. Food had no flavor. Skip it!

This restaurants is one of the best in town! I came here for my birthday with a party of 17 and the customer service was awesome and it's the best Mexican food I have had in town!

Agave Mexican Restaurant surpassed all expectations. Their beer menu is very affordable, $3.50 for most imports. Portions are very generous, I am a big boned human and I had leftovers. White cheese dip, nuff said. It's a large space so it would be a great place to throw a work party. Don't forget to ask about the hump day special ;) You will not be disappointed.

Mariachi Loco burrito. Proportion meat to bean/rice weak. Looked hard to find the meat. Chips and salsa good would come back but only to try something different.

The food was excellent. Loved our chicken fajitas and margaritas. Very kid friendly too! My son loves trains so it was an added bonus that you could see them right out he window! Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. We'll definitely be back.

Que sabroso! Muy Muy Rico. Me gusto Mucho! We had a very pleasant experience and super good food. From the salsa to the fajitas it was all done well. We weren't sold on the beans but the rest was amazing. Nice atmosphere too. Y buena musica. Regresaremos pronto.

There is no good reason for 4 stars for this place... Awful... Like nearly inedible. We left tons on the plate. Even our kids wouldn't eat it and they normally love Mexican food.

    (1)
  • Krystal L.

I think it's a little over priced on some things but overall we enjoyed our lunch here! We pulled up and definitely under-estimated the place. We walked in and sat towards the left front where there is a nice view. Don't get the calamari ... Our waiter recommended it to us and it was NOT a good choice. Try the cheese crisp, It's AWESOME. They have horchata! The combination plates were big and filling. Service wasn't there but we didn't really need anything in the end so I was happy.

Really surpassed my initial thoughts, 'oh great another mediocre mexican joint in Flag...yay!' It was not bad, not bad at all. NOT GREAT! Little on the bland side. I had the carne asada burrito. Not greasy, meat was good and properly cooked. Not sopping in oil which is good. Good flavor of the green sauce on top. Beans were ok. My dad had cheese enchiladas and they were done right and proper with onions inside. I would say this is a place to go in Flag. To be fair this is around the best Flagstaff has to offer but not the best Mexican I have had by any stretch. I will be back to try something else. After a 3rd attempt if it is just OK I will stick with making my own Mexican food.

    (3)
  • Jenn Q.

Pretty darn good place. Their salsa is smoky, chips very good. I ordered my typical favorite which is chicken enchiladas. I also got the pollo funidido another day and that was also good. What isn't good though when it involved sour cream and cheese. It is a good typical mexican restaurant that I hope sticks around. Good stuff.

Yum...yum!

Skip it!

There is no good reason for 4 stars for this place... Awful... Like nearly inedible. We left tons on the plate. Even our kids wouldn't eat it and they normally love Mexican food.

Good stuff.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
