Waitress kept disappearing. Food was filling, the stick to your ribs type of Mexican food rather than the wonderful spices and flavored kind. Margarita was not strong enough. 2nd one on the rocks was better.

Dismal. I live on the East side and was looking for options on South side when I saw Gallo's. I LOVE Mexican food and I hear their ads on the radio all the time, so I figured it was worth a shot! Hands down the worst Mexican I've had in Alaska. Our server was nice, my margarita was HUGE, and they decor was bright and wild..those are the only positives, and my margarita was overly sweet so I only finished half. The food was bland, overpriced, and the "combination" platters are mostly duplicates of the same menu item rather than actual combinations of Mexican dishes. Total bummer. $45 (before tip) for 2 entrees and one margarita, because the fajita "supreme" didn't come with lettuce and only 3 tortillas, so added extra to the bill and already overpriced dishes. We make better food at home and have found WAY better value at other places around town. Won't be back.

Haven't been here in a long time, since it first opened. Came for dinner with my dad on a Friday night around 6 and it wasn't as busy as I thought it would be. I went into the bar area to get a table and wait for my dad to meet me. I waited for probably longer than 5 minutes before my presence was even acknowledged. I was brought chips and salsa (smallest basket of chips ever) and ordered a margarita on the rocks. Dad finally came, we ordered, ate, and left. Service was meh, food was alright. Not planning on going back.

We met up with friends for some drinks and food. On the way in, we pass the bar tender scarfing down on food delivered from a different restaurant while making drinks with greasy fingers. There was no way I was eating or drinking anything with this dirty loud nasty greasy bartender coughing all over and touching everything. This guy has NO BUSINESS in any restaurant!

Wasn't impressed with food at all. Just blah, okay food. I think they're more recognized for drinks?

Mediocre food. Bad Service. Super Slow as well. I've been to the Dimond location a few times, and this restaurant has left me lacking every time. I've been in a small groups and large ones. The staff is kind when they want to be and the management is even worse. Do NOT be rude to me for the simple reason that you cannot handle a table, speak english, or know your menu. After speaking to the manager after an unsavory visit, I was met with a stubborn wall who wouldn't listen. I won't be returning.

Ate here twice so far and the service is great. Always made sure you had chips and salsa. They do get busy during the week for dinner. The food is delicious and always tons leftover! Great for family outtings.

There's a possibility that I've spent many Cinco De Mayos here...lol. Their food is consistently delicious, I like their margaritas, their cleanliness is great, customer service is also great and I love sitting on their deck. I've never had a bad experience here. My favorite appetizer to order here is their ceviche and I like their cadillac margarita.

The food here is ok. Not bad just not great. The salsa is above average which earns them an extra star. I feel like the food at the Artic location taste a little better but the service at the Old Seward location is better. If you like "hot" order a side of freshly cooked jalapeños with your meal it can be hot or miss with the heat of each one but it's usually a hit and you'll know when it is. I normally go to the one in Artic once a month and if it happens to be on the day when they have a buffet I will indulge. Usually fresh and a good variety of choices

My friend was trying to use his Northern Lts coupons as they expire this month, so we go to lunch. I tried to no avail to go to Carlos, but he was like Gallos. So we went. I've been here a handful of times and haven't been impressed. Service is generally good and I really like the mild salsa that comes with the chips, but that's about it. I always seem to find everything overly greasy and cheap tasting. The owner is a tex-mex king. He owns Taco King, Burrito King, Ernestos, and that's just what I know. The beans are cheap tasting and bland, which if fine if it's Taco King cuz that place is cheap! But I desire more out of a $12 plate of food. Go to Pancho's Villa where it's cheaper and higher quality of ingredients and taste.

Did the lunch buffet here it was not as good as I thought it would be no real flavor just crap that will fill you up if your that hungry be very careful when cashing out they tried to short change us on ten dollars when I asked a different waitress if she could get our waitress she new what the problem was she also new how much and gave it back.

Gallos has cheaper beer and in my opinion a better venue for PPV fights. The texcate girls and friendly wait staff were a plus. Food Buffett was awesome.

I ate here once or twice before and liked it well enough to return, though about a year between visits. This place has gone down hill during that time. The service was slow and inattentive. Once seated, I actually had to go back to the seating hostess to get a menu because they only gave my party (of 2) one menu and then we didn't see a server for about 10 minutes. The chairs are too tall for the tables and they pack in too many tables really close together so its uncomfortable. I couldn't even push my chair back far enough for my 4 month old to sit comfortably on my lap without bumping the back of my chair into the person seated behind me. As for the food , it was really quite bad. I ordered the fajita enchilada and it was terrible. First, it was made with corn tortillas, which see resulted in soggy tortillas, except for the edges which were too hard/tough to even bite through. They used all dark meat chicken, though there were only three tiny pieces of chicken in my meal plus a few strips of bell pepper. The best part of the meal was the beans and rice on the side, which were roughly the same quality as one would find in a cafeteria. Based on this experience, I will not be returning to this restaurant.

The service was fine. The cleanliness was fine. The atmosphere was fine. The food was terrible. I got the spinach enchiladas. The cheese was Velveeta-type and the spinach was from a can. The beans were crusty and the rice was dry. I was very disappointed.

Always available to seat large party's. Never charges extra for it either. Food is great drinks are great. Price was cheep compared to other sit down restaurants. I like gallos very much.

We went to this location for a birthday celebration. The service was great. Our waitress was attentive with out being annoying. I don't like it when someone is constantly coming to the table and asking if everything is ok. The margartia's were very good and large. Their chili rellano's and tamales were really good. Great flavor. Others had a huge burrito and a huge Chimichanga which they said were very good. Good sized portions of all meals. The spicy salsa was very flavorful and others liked the mild but that one tasted like flavored ketchup to me. Don't understand the poor reviews unless some peoples expecations are unrealistic. I will go back. If Yelp did 1/2 stars would be a 4.5 star.

it's good. the margaritas were absolutely delcious. the service was speedy and friendly, the food was spot on. my main complaint was the chips and salsa. the salsa was sort of bland, and for me, that is a real killer, since i tend to pick at the chips and salsa even after my food has arrived. the atmosphere was fun, there were plenty of tvs to watch sports on. if they changed their salsa this might become our regular place...

Worst service I have ever received. I completely understand that it was fathers day and they were busy catering to a lot of people (i've worked as a server and in restaurants all my life) but there is no excuse to the level of service, or complete lack there of, that we received. I went with my family, our first time there and definitely our last time, at gallos. We entered and waited to be seated because there was a sign in the front, but we were waiting there a few minutes and I had to chase someone down to seat us. In hindsight we should have left then and there. We were seated and there were about 10 other tables there already, so not too busy, especially when half the people there were eating at the buffet. We waited a good 5-10 minutes before anyone came by our table to greet us and take our orders. Then when the chips came out, there was a hair hanging off the tray next to the salsa. Our waiter just brushed it off nonchalantly and continued to place the chips and salsa on our table. During our meal we had to chase a server down for water several times and one server spilled water on the table and took the only napkin at our table to wipe it off. We thought he would bring us more napkins but we had to wait another 5 minutes and ask them to bring more napkins to our table. Lastly, we were waiting for the check and there was a misunderstanding about whether or not they had already charged us for our meal. This definitely place a damper in my father's mood throughout the rest of the day and we will with certainly not be going back. I'm usually not the one to be upset about these things, but considering it was our first time and I was treating my dad to a father's day meal was extremely embarrassing and disappointing. UPDATE: July 17, 2014 I was looking for another place to eat and noticed my review was hidden. It was not out of hate, on my part, when I wrote the review. Many others agreed with the level of non-existing service.

Wow! I've only been here once but had such a great experience! Our waitress was knowledgable and friendly and the food was absolutely delicious! Couldn't have asked for a better experience.

My 4 star review is more about the service than the food. Food alone is a 3 but the service was a 5. Great margaritas (not so sweet you know a headache is following) and good rice and beans. I got the seafood enchiladas- the crab is actually imitation crab which was disappointing, but they were decent overall. Wouldn't get the same meal again, but would absolutely go back.

Mediocre would be a compliment for the food here. My plate was full of sub-par ingredients, and my wife's plate involved fajita meat, which must mean "all the throw-away tendon bits and ligaments". There was no sign of breast meat, just stringy nastiness. This is the kind of food where you might keep eating only because there has got to be some good flavor somewhere. Keep digging, because you have a better chance of discovering a dinosaur skeleton than some tasty goodness. If you still end up going, don't get stuck at the high chairs. I'm sure they used to work somewhere, but the table they're at now makes it very uncomfortable. You will wedge your legs under the table, and regret not making your wife sit on that side. Be a gentleman, and margarita your woes away.

Good food & good service. But the damnedest thing, they wouldn't let me have a lemonade in a to go cup. The server offered me a refill but I asked him what good that would do me if I couldn't take it with me. He just smiled and walked off.

The food was whack. Service... Whack.. Decorations.. Whack (unless you're an old Mexican lady).. The deco was very sunny (for some reason there are a bunch of suns on a yellow wall). The place also had cocks around (chicken) for deco. I have nothing to say about the food... Whack

This restaurant is located south of town, in a "newer area"....just off the "New Seward Highway"....it was a pleasant surprise, as not only did it serve alcohol, but had a nice bar with big screen TVs....the restaurant itself is a large "American Style"...one.....with lots of room...I had the beef Tacos a la carte along with the tortilla soup...gotta say ..their Margaritas, Tacos, and Tortilla Soups are mucho Tex-Mex Style.....!!

I have not eaten here for a very long time, so stopped in tonight for a quick bite. Food wasn't that good, chicken enchilada was all dark meat, And really had no flavor at all. They did not bring my drink until my basket of chips was nearly gone. Overall very ho-hum nothing too exciting.

Attempted to have dinner here Friday night, September 7th. Was informed 15 minute wait for a party of three. No problem. While waiting another customer (by himself) was talking LOUD on his cell phone and using harsh language. Not a good thing when your young daughter is standing next to you. After 5 minutes and staff doing nothing about it I asked for them to please do something about the situation. Nothing. 5 minutes later while their customer was still cussing in their lobby we decided to leave. On the way out I asked to speak to the manager. Manager was to scared to do anything about it since I walked back in 3 minutes later and she was still standing in the same place when I left and the patron was still talking on his cell phone cussing up a storm. Guess the "family restaurant" depends on the manager on duty. Will not visit this establishment again.

I'm usually very impartial or biased to chain restaurants, especially Mexican food, but this place was very good! This place and Pancho's Villa share the same spot as the top Mexican food places in Anchorage for me and my wife. We ordered chicken flautas, taquitos, and cheese enchiladas. The margarita's were also very good and had a good amount of kick to them. Waiter service very friendly.

A trip to a sporting goods store way on the South side of town was in order to acquire the winning lures for an upcoming Winter king salmon tournament. I grabbed my passport and traveled from one geographical corner of Anchorage to the other, South of the border (My "border is about Raspberry Road since I rarely venture past this imaginary line of demarcation). Pho V 3 was my lunch plan, but they were closed on Monday. As luck would have it, a Yelp alert popped up advising me that a friend had likewise chosen a Mexican meal somewhere else, and that sealed the deal for me. I chose Gallos because it was close to me, and I'd eaten here before. The two item combo was your typical fare, but I usually like to kick it up a few notches. I asked for a FRESH jalapeño, sliced up, and it was gladly provided free of charge. I loathe pickled peppers in restaurants, but I love the fresh ones. It was nice to be presented with a huge pepper that more resembled a small plantain. I savored every bit of that fiery beast with my lunch, and it transformed basic Mexican food into a spicy dish, just the way I like it. Even with a generous tip for the free pepper, I got out of there for less than 15 bucks!

Not impressed, I love to go to a mexican restaurant and grub on some chips and salsa, but this place had yucky old tasting chips and not so good salsa. I had the soft tacos and they weren't good, I didn't eat the second one, the meat was big chunky pieces and that's not standard for the little tacos, I'm from California so I kinda know what I'm talking about. it was hard to eat and had no flavor. My daughter had the tamales and took one bit and said yuck, I tried it and I didn't like it, but maybe we have been spoiled by homemade tamales. There was a great atmosphere but that's about it. I will not go back, the search continues.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
