This restaurant is efficient, consistent and their food is delicious. We go here sometimes for lunch and have their buffet. The staff is always very courteous and friendly. I've also eaten here for dinner and it was excellent. It's one of my favorite establishments here on this side of town.

Great service, family owned, clean and shows pride of ownership. Love the chips and salsa, spicy has a great zing and chips are always fresh hot and crisp. Basic cheese enchiladas, beans & Rice for me, but it is better than most. No greasy oily cheese. I'll take El Rodeo over any Mexican food over any other in Anchorage. Oh did I mention I ate at 7:30pm at night and my food was hot, fresh, and on the table in 7 minutes! Wow!

We went to this place tonight on the hunt for some good fajitas and we found them!!! Very clean and friendly place! The chips and salsa were killer too. A great dinner for sure!

I really enjoy coming here for lunch when it's not so busy. The food is wonderful and they are very patient with my young son squealing and making a mess. The chips tasted old and I had to ask the waitress three time for a side of sour cream but those aren't a deal breaker. I'll definitely be back.

I had purchased a Groupon here and wish I hadn't even spent that much. My server was obviously harried, took about 10 minutes to get (nonalcoholic) drinks, appetizer order forgotten, and no "check back" until most of us were finished with our meals. Mine sat mostly untouched, as the creamy chicken dish I ordered tasted like tuna fish. The server noticed I hadn't eaten much and asked if I wanted a box, which of course I didn't. Rather than ask if everything was okay, he merely took my plate and brought the bill. El Rodeo is down the street from my home and I adore Mexican food, so I was really hoping we'd get on! But alas, it is not to be.

Visiting from California and was in need of some good Mexican food (which undeniably didn't think I was going to find). I must say the food here is pretty awesome, ordered the spicy green chile enchiladas and they were so good and authentic. Menu seemed legit lotta tasty items and reasonably priced , good drinks as well! I'd detonate lay recommend this place to anyone in search of good Mexican.

Wow, what a hidden gem! I have lived on the East side of Anchorage since 1982 and this is my first time here. I am pretty simple when it comes to Mexican food. I order the same thing no matter where I go, 2 crunchy tacos with rice and beans. El Rodeo did not disappoint. I had stayed away from the restaurant thinking it would be old and musky like the places around it. I was shocked to find that it was very modern, clean, warm, and inviting. Everyone was friendly and service was quick. Sure the meal is $2 more than Burrito King, but getting chips and salsa, a menu, and the ambiance of Mexican music in the background as well as the option to order a margarita. Was more than worth it. Great Job El Rodeo!

Really nice people and service. They have a large menu of really good food and variety. They have Negra Modelo beer on draft!

Smells like my grandpas kitchen and food is authentic. Wish they would open another restaraunt near midtown! I love this place, but clear across town. The two times I ate here, loved it, love mexican food, and have it a lot, but can't drive out to Muldoon all time.

Came here based on the recommendation of a friend and good yelp reviews. Have to say we were dissatisfied. My margarita tasted like a mix, my brothers mojito was terrible. Chips and salsa were good, hard to mess those up. There were four of us. We ordered four different meals , none were very good. Not a bomb, but nothing I'd come back for either. Bit pricey for what we got as well.

What can I say about this amazing gem of a restaurant? If rooms were available for rent in the back... I'd live here :) If it's on the menu..... It's good food! Try the Chicken Chipotle or the Pollo Fundito or the Fajita's. Anything you pick will be sure to please even the most discerning taste buds. Whichever of these tastey delights you choose, be sure to wash it down with any of their amazing drinks... I recommend the Strong Island Ice Tea!!!!!!!

I've been coming to this place for YEARS! It is hands down my favorite place to eat. The food is delicious and the service is almost always lightning quick. Best place for margaritas and mexican food, in my opinion. I've ordered just about everything on the menu at this point and I haven't found one thing I don't like. Yum!

Amazing Mexican food! I am from California but travel all over the country for work and this is by far the best Mexican food I've had outside the Mexican border states. The servise is also very fast and waiting staff is very friendly

The first thing I noticed was the smiling faces of the staff. The food was good, but the service here will keep me coming back. Word!

Best Mexican restaurant in town hands down. J.F. & R.B. are confused. The service is great, as well as, the food. My 3 year old son asks to go to this place all the time & he is on a 1st name basis with his favorite server, Rudy. They're the only show in town with Horchata. Well, there is one other place but it's disgusting. My only complaint is it's a little pricey...but hey, it is Alaska. Sadly, we'll be moving back to the lower 48 in a couple months & will miss this place.

It has only been so so for the last year or so, something is definitely going downhill. We don't go here anymore for this reason, such a bummer. Food just isn't good anymore.

This is hands down the worst "Mexican" food I have ever had! The tortillas were horrible, the enchiladas tasted like they opened a can of cheap watered down sauce, the chips were ok, and the server didn't seem to know what she was doing. I have had REAL Mexican food and this is not it.

My favorite Mexican restaurant, hands down. The pollo fundido is superb!! Juicy, well seasoned chicken, wrapped with love in a flour tortilla, and covered in melted cheeses. The service is spectacular and the place is spotless. You can tell that this is a family run business by the love and pride. I love this place!!!

Ahhh yes... El Rodeo. One of the best in town for sure! Food is always piping hot, service is always great, and my drinks are always filled. Very quick on getting your food out and always friendly and serving with a smile. There's a reason I go back time and time again. Keep it up guys! You're doing something right!

pretty darn good! the service was ok. nothing spectacular... the food was really good. its a bit of a hole in the wall but you know some of those places have the best darn food!

  • Chris K.

Where to begin, well...Upon moving to our apartment (my wife and I), we were recommended this little hole-in-the-wall restaurant by our then-landlady. And boy are we glad we did. Upon entering the door, you're greeted by the always-very-friendly staff (and owners), swiftly brought chips and salsa, and are given all the time you need to order. Then, after ordering...your delicious (and I do mean delicious) food is brought to you steaming hot within 5-8 minutes, with a smile on the server's face. Basically, what I'm trying to say is, everytime you visit this glorious place, you're enveloped by an environment that is both pleasant and sincere. They even remember who you are/what you order after a few visits! Anyways, All I'm saying is that you won't regret visiting this place..it's a treat! (P.s. try the #24, their enchiladas are to die for!)

Good food and great service. Had the chicken burro and will try beef or pork next time. So far the best Mexican Food in Alaska. I'm from Arizona and its tough to beat Taco Dons in Prescott but it's close. Worth a try!

Great food...great service, reasonable prices! The lunch buffet is second-to-none as far as Mexican food goes. Oh, and try to fried ice cream for dessert - WOW!!!

El Rodeo is am amazing Mexican restaurant! The staff is extremely friendly and always has a smile on their face. It took me a couple tries to find what is my favorite dish, their chicken chipolte (and I am not a chipolte fan)! It's so yummy and not a dish you find at most Mexican places. Another great thing is that they are the only Mexican restaurant in Anchorage that I know of that does a lunch buffet during the week! Highly recommend it. Seems many military folks have found this gem in Muldoon too cause at lunch hour there are a good deal of uniforms in there :)

My wife and I ate there last night and I hate to rain on everyone's parade, but the food was nothing spectacular and it is WAY overpriced for the quality. That's normal in Alaska, but I thought this was a bit more excessive than normal. The two taco plate was $12.25 and I don't care how good it is, a taco isn't worth $6. I'm not really a big chip eater but normally chips are refilled when the basket runs out. We didn't eat what we had but I noted on the menu that more chips are $2.25. Sour cream was an additional $1.50 and guacamole was $2.95. I understand that restaurants need to make money but there's a difference in making money on an item and blatantly overcharging. You can go to Fred Meyer and buy an entire bag of chips that aren't burned for $3 and a whole pint of sour cream for $1.50. It annoys me that they want an extra $5 for condiments that should be on the plate. On to the review...we both had the Number 1: Beef Enchilada, Cheese Enchilada, Chili Relleno, Beef Taco, Rice and Beans (altho we both opted for double rice, no beans). They brought out a small basket that was about 2/3 full of chips. Unfortunately, the chips were over-fried and had an almost burnt taste to them. They brought two containers of salsa. The hot was just OK, but the mild tasted like ketchup to me. I wound up mixing the two and it was more palatable. I asked my wife if it tasted like ketchup to her and she said it tasted odd and she had been trying to figure out the taste -- ketchup nailed it for her. The second shocker of the night...no queso dip. This might possibly be the first Mexican restaurant I've ever been to that doesn't have cheese dip. They have cheese nachos for $8.95 -- which from the servers description sounded like chips with some shredded cheese sprinkled on them and then placed under the broiler and they had a spinach dip, but no queso. The cheese enchilada was pretty bland. The beef enchilada and beef taco were better, but again, there was a ketchup aftertaste that was just odd. The rice was also bizarre. I love Mexican-style rice and I make it at home. I've seen it made with small pieces of carrot and peas to add color, so that didn't surprise me, but this is the first time I've ever had it served with string beans in it...a lot of string beans. Overall, the rice was tasteless and when it came out, it was cold. The final item on the menu was the chili relleno, which was actually the one stand out item on the plate. It was very good and flavorful. It's doubtful I'll ever go back, but if I did I would get the Number 12 - two chili rellenos. There are some very good restaurants here in Alaska, and as I get time, I'll try to do more reviews because I know some of my reviews look negative. I've lived all over the U.S. and one of the interesting things I find here in Alaska is people are willing to settle for mediocre restaurants because of availability. I've lived here for five years and I've learned to adjust my expectations but mediocre is still mediocre. Everyone at El Rodeo was nice and the service was good, but the food was mediocre and overpriced. Bad service can ruin a good meal, but good service isn't enough to overcome bland, mediocre, overpriced food. Maybe the food is better if you're drinking, but Alaska remains a wasteland for good Mexican/ Tex-Mex so far.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
