This is a great place for groups and has a lively atmosphere. We always come here for dinner with a group of about 6. The owner treats us extra special, some my friend knows him. The food is good. I've had the chile verde burrito, tamale, carnitas (not available all the time), asada taco... Not all at once. Their rice and bean are pretty standard, the tamale is no good, but the other items I had were good. They have singer who goes around and sings, sometimes the owner sings and blasts ha away, so be warned :) but it a good place to meet friends and enjoy some good food!

The chips and salsa were okay. We ordered the 'burrito & two enchiladas' and it was pretty bad. Microwaveable burritos are way better. The price is unjustified.

Worst "Mexican" food ever. Like being at Cracker Barrel on Cinco De Mayo. Don't go here unless your level of self loathing is at an all time low or your taste buds are nonexistent. Taco King is way better, cheaper, and at least authentic.

Service was outstanding...food pretty average. Salsa seemed like canned tomatoes in a food processor with little flavor - even the hot version. Asked for a bowl of cilantro (charged $2.00) which helped. Ordered fish tacos - nothing special. Also a chile rellano which was tasteless and smothered in cheese to hide it's unimpressiveness. Also tried the beef and bean burritos which were equal to gas station microwavable versions. Prices seemed high for meh food. Good for big groups which is probably how they stay in business. They don't skimp on the lettuce as a way to dress up the plates. Presentation on the plates was above average.

The chips were a little on the thick side for me, and they came with two bowls of salsa, hot and mild. The spicier one was actually up to my fiery standards and I managed to hoover it all down before my friend arrived to join me for lunch. I had my usual combo of taco/enchilada, and the plate came out in the traditional hot style. Now for the true test. "Do you have any fresh jalapeño?" Out comes the pickled variety that I loathe. No thanks, 3 stars. My server returned them to the kitchen, and I heard a lot of discussion coming from that direction. A couple of minutes later, I was pleased when a diced fresh pepper appeared which I happily poured onto my plate. Yum! 4 stars! I also liked the fact that menudo was available every day, and not just on the weekend. Next time, I'll have to give that tasty tripe stew a try!

Ordered a Mtn Dew, trying not to drink on weekdays, and they were out so I orderd a Dr. Pepper and to my surprise it arrived IN A CAN. NO JOKE. Been here a time or 2, but only drank beer so this was a shock. Wont make this mistake again. $2.00 bucks for a glass of ice and a canned drink. SMH. Food is delicious though!

Typical Anchorage Mexican food. Nothing special and sub-par service. Look elsewhere.

In my search for a good local Mexican restaurant, I tried Carlos. I have actually dined here twice now, and I think I have found a great spot in Carlos. One of my biggest tests with any Mexican restaurant is their salsa and chips. Carlos has the best salsa and chips in Anchorage! The entrees are delicious and the margaritas are also quite good. The service was very friendly, and both times I was there they were quite busy, which is a good sign. I think I have found my favorite local Mexican restaurant, and I am looking forward to my next visit.

having moved to anchorage 6 months ago my husband and i have been shopping around for a "go to" mexican place. my main criteria are delicious salsa and fresh chips, tasty margaritas and cheese enchilads without onions. carlos hit the mark on all three. the margaritas were strong and yummy. the chips and salsa were spot on and the enchiladas were delicious. my only complaint was that the bar area was super crowded, although we also took this as a good sign since a busy restaurant is usually a good one. i'm not sure yet if this is our final go-to choice, but it is definitely up there.

I had bee to Carlos's many times before- both as a couple and with the family. This is the first time ever that we received sub-par service. First we were a table of 6, they tried to cram us a a table for 4 with 2 chairs at end. After refusing and asking for a larger table, we sat for 30 minutes before our drink order was taken. We saw our the waitress serve 3 other tables before us. Finally when she was summoned over she rolled her eyes at me. We ended up spending $137.00 plus tip. Not my idea of great service considering we are regulars here and always spend well. Not sure what happened, usually our Server -Roy, is a great Waiter. But this night he was not in. Definitely will give them another try. Not sure what happened. Am hoping it was just a fluke. Have heard rumors that they have new owners... Wonder if this is caused by that???

I've lived in South Anchorage since I was 5 years old and Carlos' has been at it's location on Old Seward (near Klatt) for as long as I can remember. Located within a faux hacienda-style building, as with many hidden gems, the interior isn't much to look at, the food more than makes up for it. The service has always been fast and friendly. If you're lucky, you'll be there on a night when they have the wandering mariachi band playing (who doesn't love a mariachi band? La Bamba anyone?). The food is also fresh, hot and fast. My favorite is the #12 Chimichanga dinner. If you like Mexican, and I don't mean Taco Bell, then Carlos' should be at the top of your list.

The food was okay. HOWEVER, I discovered a hair in our salsa, so the waitress took our chips and salsa away, saying she would give us fresh ones. She didn't. Several workers (busboys?) asked "You have no chips and salsa?" and we told them what happened and I think maybe they didn't understand so they didn't give us any more. We had to ask the waitress for the chips and salsa again (which was hard because she never came by). I think we finally got more at least 10 minutes later. They didn't give any sort of discount or anything, which a restaurant definitely should for something like hair in your food!!!!

I have gone to Carlos' many , many times, but no more. There is something I can just not figure out. The owner is usually tending bar and I have never, ever, seen him in a good mood. If I'm sitting at the bar area, at least get someone to tend bar who doesn't give your customer the creeps. The food is OK at best. It could be really great, but it's not. The rice and beans are mediocre. Why is it so hard to dress up canned refrieds? The other items on the menu are usually good, but it depends who is in the kitchen. Unfortunately, Kirsten F. experienced the deal breaker. Hair in food, in a restaurant, is a major offense.

Wow :-O ...I'm actually surprised to see two negative ratings about Carlos', but I guess even the old favorites I have around town can be off on certain days? Carlos' is located in an older, but quaint little building off the Old Seward Highway in South Anchorage. The front door cracks me up everytime I go inside or out since it's positioned right in front of a stucco pillar that you'll walk smack dab into if you're not paying attention. To me, that's just part of the rustic charm of the old place. The owners are almost always on site and they, as well as the staff, are incredibly friendly! They are johnny-on-the-spot to refill your chip basket or salsa containers as soon as they run low. Since I like more cilantro than they put in the salsa, they always bring me a small dish of fresh chopped cilantro. :o) .... Some of our favorites are the combo platter, the Senorita Supreme, the chimicangas, the spinach enchiladas, etc.. Also, I have to give major kudos to the owner who is quite a pillar of the Anchorage community. He cares a lot about his restaurant, but he also cares a great deal about the city he lives in. - - - ~~~~Update from my 2009 review: August 26, 2015 (because I haven't been on Yelp in eons)... Wow, Carlos has started to decline since my rave review before. I'm not sure if it's more competition or what, but it's sad that an old neighborhood joint like this seems to have seen its better day. Maybe they changed cooks? Maybe they're too busy with their other business ventures? I'm not really sure. What I am sure of though is that for me, it went from a great place to eat at to mediocre at best. Bummer. :0(

I love Carlos'. Judging by all the other people waiting on a Friday night, other people love it, too. Despite it being busy, they do a great job of greeting you, taking your party's name, and giving you timely updates ("we're clearing your table now. Just a few more minutes"). On Friday nights there's a guy with a keyboard playing and singing, so your spirits will be uplifted, too. Carlos' does it right consistently: *Fast, friendly service from pre-meal to check. *Great food and generous portions. Go to Carlos' if you're in South Anchorage. And if you're not, take a drive out and give it a try.

Not a good choice. The food was horrible and overpriced. The service was slow and very bad dining experience. To top it off our burritos were not what your typical burrito. The chicken tastes funny and the burrito came with ground up bones inside..disgusting. Hopefullly someone else has had a better experience. Adiós

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
