We were traveling through the area and happened to stop at this location. The food and service was excellent. My mom has food allergies and they were very accommodating. We tried there hamburger . It was a real hamburger patty!!! The food was delicious. Our server was fantastic and really cared about what we needed. You won't be disappointed!! Excellent!!!!!

Traveling cross country late at night, this place shone like a beacon in a dark and hungry world. The lovely waitress welcomed us with hot fresh coffee and assured us we could order anything even though it was close to closing time. I had a patty melt that was cooked exactly as I requested. It came with deliciously crispy fries and I think I finished every one! I was even graciously given an extra to-go cup of coffee for the road!

The food here was adequate. It "filled the hole," but not much else. My wife got a patty melt and I got the chicken-fried steak. The high point was the humorous books kept at every table ("if life was fair, horses would get to ride half the time")

Just stopped at the Outpost Cafe for a late lunch with the kids on our way to Mount Rushmore. Looked at the reviews and some were good and some bad. It is a basic diner inside. We had a very good meal!!! My son and I had cheeseburgers that were fresh and definitely not a frozen patty! The fries were cooked perfectly. My wife had roast beef with mashed and gravy and my son could not stop eating it!! My daughter simply had Dino chicken nuggets with fries and they were under $4!! To top it off we had the pecan pie and coffee! I would definitely stop here again.

Apparently the older waitress must be having a bad day. The younger waitress was taking care of almost every table, while the older one was slamming menus and other kitchen items. Grilled ham and cheese was like at home. Enjoyed it! They had homemade pie, which is always a plus. Blueberry was great! Everyone at my table enjoyed what they had. I would recommend they dust...

I see another reviewer on 7/18/2014 had the same experience as me -- we couldn't get somebody to take our order. We arrived and a lady told us to take any seat. We sat down, she brought water for us but didn't come back. When we noticed other tables that arrived after us getting food we got up and told them we hadn't had our order taken. The lady said "I just haven't gotten to you yet." Then she went back to cleaning tables and taking food to tables. After 5 more minutes we got up and left. There aren't many places to eat in this town and the next town is 50 minutes away. Since we were on a 6 hour drive, we got in the car and drove to the next town. We wasted 45 minutes at this restaurant to never eat and we really didn't have the time to waste. I normally don't write negative reviews because I figure restaurants will put themselves out of business by poor food/service. However, in this case they are the main restaurant for 50 miles so they have no competition. I guess I'm writing this review just in case the owners ever read it.

So we knew most places around would be closed at it is off season, either that or they close early, not here, they were open late! They use real butter, a big win for us! And they cooked the steaks blue! We are known to send our steaks back if they are overdone, we've done so at some nice steakhouses, but Outpost Cafe cooked them perfectly!

Pricey, slow and not very good. Food was bland, especially the massive taco. Flies swooping around our food through the meal. I had to ask for kids' menus (even though I walked in with three kids). I thanked the waitress when I left (after SHE asked me if I wanted to add a tip to my bill) and she said absolutely nothing. Didn't even look at me. Will not return.

Went in and waited 10 minutes. Never received a menu or even a glass of water. Not even a "we'll be with you in a minute". I left. Can't tell you about the food but poor service.

Great breakfast. Fast friendly service. If you are in Lusk this is the place to eat. Driving back to Colorado from South Dakota, stopped in Lusk for the night. The food was great, coffee was good and better service than most places I have been.

Nice place to stop essentially in the middle of no where. The food and service were surprisingly good. I had a sandwich which was delicious and the fries were fresh and hot and topped it all off with a slice of homemade pie.

There are 1,567 people living in Lusk, and in early July there's a hot dry wind sweeping through and not a lot of places to stop for a cold drink and hot food. Inside the Outpost you'll find a few travelers like me, checking for wifi and Yelp reviews, but mostly it holds local folks. On the 5th of July @ lunchtime, a few men wearing cowboy hats (because they ARE cowboys, not as a fashion statement) sit at the counter, while families share other tables, and the talk and feel of the place is casual and friendly. Some books at the table help pass the time, and the burger that arrives is hand formed and cooked just about right. The lemonade - pink - wasn't a winner, with an offputting chemical flavor. The bathrooms are clean, and the busy waitress is friendly. The young guy who took our $ was probably one of the owner's kids - and it was refreshing seeing a youngster who was that responsible and polite!

The service was slow but friendly. Just one sweet lady running the front of the house. Amazing biscuits and steak! If we find ourselves passing through again, we will definitely come back.

Passing through Lusk, we happened upon this place. Good call! Riding through the area on a warm day and we were ready for a break. Lusk seems to be slim pickings for restaurants but this place caught our eye. It is a solid classic American diner and an excellent lunch stop that is pretty much a local place - I don't think Lusk, Wyoming gets too many tourists. Standard diner fare done well as you see in many small towns yet to be taken over by fast food giants.

This place is on the edge of town. We were traveling between Mt. Rushmore and home. We had the breakfast special with a coffee and milk, and coffee for the road. Food was hot and good, especially the pancakes. And for $18 bucks, not too shabby. It was Sunday, so it was fun to go and experience small town life again. Felt very welcome and at home. The waitress was part time and my English muffin hit the deck, for which she was ribbed for a while. Then, they put my replacement English muffin on a platter, which we all got a great laugh. It was a great experience and I will go back again. I think I want to stop. in Lusk and check it out.

How I happen to have ended up in Lusk, WY - population 1440 - twice, is beyond me. But both times I ate here the food was hot, the prices were cheap, and the service was great. Little know fact: MTV is going to have their spring break house in Lusk this year. Nebraska/Wyoming border Spring Break 2010!!!

Stopped here in route to Mt. Rushmore. My husband really liked it, but I could care less one way or the other. He liked his turkey, gravy, mashers on toast and apple pie. I had the grilled chicken with cottage cheese with coconut pie. The chicken was low quality and fatty and I took one bite of pie and threw it out. The service was GREAT and it does have a hometown feel. If you like homestyle food, I'd recommend this place. If you are picky about what you eat, don't even try it. They were nice peeps though. No kids menu, so full meal price for kids.
