There are hardly any restaurants open in Lander on Sunday night, which is why we ended up at Cowfish. I am glad it turned out this way because we had a great time, beginning when we walked up to the restaurant and saw their funny logo above the door until the end when we "rolled" full and satisfied out again. The atmosphere in the restaurant is very pleasant, the service friendly (although a little slow sometimes), the restrooms very clean, and the food - oh my! Some of the best I ever had. Our party ordered the stuffed mushrooms with the crispy onions as a shareable appetizer. We could have ordered a second and a third plate, this is how great they tasted. But we wanted to leave room for the entrées and dessert, so we restricted ourselves, which is good, because the entrées were quite big and filling portions. We had the roasted Scottish salmon, pan-fried rainbow trout and the Oaxaca grilled chicken salad. Each entrée was delicious, the fish and chicken were "to the point". There was almost no room for dessert, but we were curious, after everything we had tasted so far, to see what dessert would be like, and delighted ourselves with crème brulée and espresso and cardamom chocolate mousse. Just wonderful! We still talk about our great dinner at Lander's Cowfish (we dined in June 2015) and are sorry that it is out of our way, otherwise we would be regulars at this awesome place.

We had an amazing lunch. Nice selection of greens for the salad that included roasted corn and pumpkin seeds. The marinated pork with red chile was an added bonus. We had chips and guacamole too. Everything was very fresh. Beer from lander brewing was very good. My daughter had watermelon lemonade which she went back for. Defiantly will return.

When we came to this restaurant, we were on a road trip going to Salt Lake City. We were coming from Cody, and we were hungry!! The lady at the bar sat us down, and we ordered the strawberry mint lemonade for drinks. ABSOLUTELY REFRESHING!! For entrées, we ordered the chips and guacamole, beef tacos, a beef burrito, and a beef salad. The tortillas were home made, and excellent!!! However, the tacos, and the meat on the salad was a bit salty.. The burrito was good!! The size was right, and the attitude was nice!! Definitely give this restaurant a try whenever you are in Lander!!

We showed up with no reservations by the staff worked us in. Busy place! The food here is wonderful! The bread is hot and has a perfect crust. The pale cheese burger was cooked to perfection. The blue cheese dressing for the wedge salad Wes creamy and sharp. The ribs fell off of the bone. To finish off the carrot cake was outstanding.

I had the rainbow trout and loved it. I also had a flight of beer which was fun with generous portions. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars is because my dad ordered a New York strip steak and was very disappointed. He admits to being fussy about steak, so not sure if this is a completely reliable opinion. Come here if you are in Lander!

Four stars for the name alone...Cowfish!?!? Love it. Sat at the bar and got the beer flight. The beers were A-ok. We weren't terribly hungry so we ordered the tuna tartare. The tuna was WAAAAAAAAY overcooked (I understand why) but other than that, it was a tasty dish. Looking around the place seemed to have a pretentious vibe to it. The bar was fun but I could see how the service could be a bit lacking....

The below review was written just after my dinner, I am now in Hawaii on the final leg of my journey: Tonight our party of 6 ate at Cowfish restaurant in Lander, WY. We forgot to save the receipt, probably since I drank the Lander brew sampler and I didn't remember after drinking all but one or two of them. When I was visiting for a few days from Los Angeles I was wondering where to eat since there wasn't much else to do. My husband and I are moving to Hawaii so we were stopping here on our way. I checked Yelp for places to eat and thought Cowfish sounded like a delightful place to eat. I was alarmed at the number of bad reviews about steak, but it had 4 stars on Yelp which I pretty solid by Los Angeles standards. I started my meal with the micro-brew sampler which I loved all except one of the last 2. I would suggest since the sampler holder is numbered the list of beers have numbers to correspond. I was having to count down the list when I tried a new beer so I could see what it was. Let me preface the below by saying we all ate some of each meal, we sampled everything. For dinner I had the Brussel sprout Carbonara. I was wondering how I could eat something without a protein and be satisfied. Well, I can tell you how, the chunks of bacon were substantial. So not only were there a lot of large bacon chunks, but it was superb bacon. Meaty, thick, good quality bacon. The dish was divine, as in the very best of creamy rich pasta dishes I have ever eaten. And the funny thing is I am not a big Brussel sprout fan, but they were tasty in this dish. My husband had the center cut fillet. I was expecting something average since I had read so many bad reviews about steak. His steak was amazing. It was perfectly done medium rare, melt in your mouth. My mother, who hates steak, could not believe how good it was, or how tender. It was superb. Maybe some of the previous reviews were either bad pieces of meat, or poor meat choices, or maybe a different chef. I prefer center cut fillets over other cuts. I particularly dislike sirloin which I think is a rather poor cut of meat. My mother had the rainbow trout. It was amazing. No fishy taste. Perfect subtle taste, which is what rainbow trout should be. The meat was firm and not greasy. It came with pickled artichokes which none of us like. I like boiled artichokes with light salt. I had several bites of the trout. I thought the portions were very generous for a fresh water fish compared to most restaurants in Los Angeles where I had eaten trout. My sister had some pasta that started with an O, it had feta cheese, mushrooms, etc. It was very good, the bite I had. Was somewhat lighter and mild flavored compared to my dish. For a finale we had some sort of custard with something sort of like butterscotch. We all shared one desert since our meal was more than enough. I told our server (I am so sorry, she was great but since I don't have the ticket I don't know her name) that the food was amazing. Really remarkable. She said she was going to pass on the information and appreciated the feedback. She later thanked us for the kind words but no manager or chef came out to ask about what we said. Maybe in Wyoming people come out here to work because they don't like dealing with people. In most of Los Angeles, the managers or chefs love hearing rave reviews because they care. So either they don't care here, or they know they are good and still don't care what others think, which comes back to not liking people. And dinner service was definitely over, no new tables were seated towards the end of our meal. So I do find it different. Our total bill was $127. Considering it was 4 adults and 2 children that is extremely affordable. I was very surprised the bill was so small, I was expecting around $200 since so many reviews said it was expensive for Wyoming. I have eaten in Jackson Hole several times and spent more than $200 for just 2. My husband and I thought if this place was in Los Angeles you wouldn't be able to get in. Some of our favorite places there were impossible to get in to unless you reserved at least 2 days out, some even more. Cowfish I made a reservation only in the afternoon. I might add there was live music in the brewery and it sounded great. Really relaxing and actually very good music. This place was definitely a 5 star treat in the middle of rural America.

What a surprise on "the main drag" in Lander -- that earlier we thought showed no promise of an interesting place to eat! Thank you Yelp! Brew-lover husband liked the beer taster -- & more of the one he liked the best. The Pub Menu was our choice & my Korean tacos were yummy. His burger and the brews made him a happy man. We both loved the patio. Nice servers, welcoming "vibe." 4 stars only because we didn't get to try the dining menu.
(4)Sarah R.
The service is outstanding and the food is delicious. I recommend the pub menu at Cowfish over the Lander Bar menu. Similar style of food, but much better service and atmosphere. As far as the main dinner menu, the trout was delicious.

Always an awesome experience when I come into Lander for work. This is such an amazing gem of a restaurant in a little mountain town in Wyoming. Lots of interesting and flavorful dishes. Tonight I had the braised short rib ramen miso bowl. Full of tasty rib meat that had a great Asian flavor, lots of fresh veggies, cilantro, seaweed slices, and an egg to top it off! Delish! My friends had the fresh trout, fish and chips, and a chicken salad. It all looked delightful. Great wine and their own microbrews are great pairings with the terrific menu selections. They have a bar side, a formal dining side, and an outside area for the nice weather days!

Great great great place in Lander! Service at the bar was good, restaurant was very busy on a Tuesday night and unable to get a table but the bar was great and available. Atmosphere overall is very nice. Brussel sprouts and Ahi appetizers were amazing, definitely recommend. Steak was delicious and cooked perfectly but the side was disappointing sorry to say, was looking forward to wilted greens and instead was served with a hodge podge mix of soupy beans and various veggies. Only reason for 4 over 5 stars was the side and that they do not offer wine by the glass for the most part? By the bottle is certainly an option however by the glass consisted of whatever they already had opened, only able to choose from 2 reds that day and not good vineyards at that. Would be great if even a smattering of by the glass options were added to the menu....

Very tasty food and a diverse menu. Love the local brews on tap. Happy to go back again and again. A little bit pricey for what you get.

Ate here in August 2014, with a crew of food service professionals. Some things highly rated (crispy Brussels sprouts and stuffed mushroom apps), some not so much (SW eggroll apps, steaks). I had the Brussels sprout carbonara, yum! Others ordered steaks that were overdone and tough. For the most part, the pasta and fish dishes were well-received, but the meat entrees need some attention. You'd think that in Wyoming, a properly prepared steak would be required by law. Otherwise we enjoyed sitting on the covered patio, and the service was pretty good; our waiter went next door to the Lander Bar to fulfill a special request, and he paid attention to the non-alcoholic beverage refill requests too. Wish they were open for lunch, because I'm not usually passing through Lander at supper time.

So previous reviews had me a bit skeptical. People either seem to love or hate it. Lots of complaints on the service and price. I decided to give it a shot since I really needed a good beer. I must say I wasn't disappointed. I tried the white ipa, pumkin and pale ale beer. All were solid. I also tried their mix cocktail "big ginger". Not what I expected and a little tart for my taste but you could tell they used super fresh ingredients. I had the southwest egg rolls which were good. They were served on top of this amazing spicy chili sauce. I had the hanger steak which was ok. Could have used some additional seasoning. The cost could be considered high for a small town in Wyoming but I'm from Chicago, so the price was beyond reasonable to me. Service was solid. Our waitress was friendly and attentive.

Probably the best restaurant in town but coming from the Bay Area, hard to compare! Great service!!
(3)Bill H.
Service was prompt, wait staff was attentive and the food was ok. I ordered the baby back ribs. They were tasty and fell off the bone, but a bit dry. Prices were outrageous and for this reason I would not return.

One of, if not the finest restaurants in Fremont County. For a classier feel, ask to sit in the dining room. For a more relaxed feeling, choose to sit in the pub. Like the name suggests, this place has good steaks and seafood. The steak filet with blue cheese butter is fantastic. The house salad is good, but the caramelized onions put it over the top. If you're in a pasta mood try the beef tips in the brown tequila sauce, they are delicious. Skip the "Karma" asada tacos, the pico needs work and the steak is so-so. Overall though, give this place a try, it is hard to beat in the Lander/Riverton area.

Was in Lander for work and had 3 different people recommend this restaurant, so I decided to check it out. Had the bison meatloaf and a beer. Very taste. Will be back. If you are in the area check it out great food and amazing microbrews.

Excellent meal, excellent staff, delicious martinis and perfect size portions.
(5)Micaela L.
ordered and loved the cow tenderloin tips. one of my friends ordered the center cut fillet and loved it. another friend got the salmon and just thought it was okay. this place is really pretty and has a beautiful outdoor patio.

I love this place! I forgot to post my review the other day. My mom and I went in for her annual birthday dinner. It was Cowfishes annual March madness special(Bogo on entrees) we had a reservation and expected it to be packed and it was. We waited along with other couples for around 30 minutes. No biggie there wasn't an empty table in the house. The problem was there was no one at the front counter to acknowledge the customers for at least 15 minutes. So anyhow we got our table and had fabulous service! Alcohol came quickly from the bar appetizer (the mushrooms) which by the way are to die for came out hot and fast. I ordered that nights special which happened to be a stripped Sea Bass. It was beyond delicious! Cooked to absolute perfection! Mom had her usual beer battered shrimp which was also fabulously cooked to perfection! Now back to the service. So I can't help but notice a man in suite working here presumably the manager(?) walking around all night doing NOTHING. This is the same man that was absent from the front counter for 15minutes when we came in. There is probably 3 servers running their tails off giving great service maybe one busser cleaning tables (these ladies were rocking it) and here is this man standing behind this server watching her enter her order into the computer with a look on his face as if something she was doing was wrong. I watched this man stand in the hallway looking at a try full of drinks from the bar that need served. Clearly this man doesn't belong in the restaurant industry. Anyhow you still deserve 5 stars Cowfish!

This place is a total find. My husband had trout and I had steak and both were delicious. The whole block is owned by the same people and they brew their own beer which is also delicious.
(5)Brian B.
Ok overall, but with little local competition. Service can be painfully slow but in general the food is ok. Why is the service so poor? Each time I have been here our drinks took about ten minutes to arrive. Once we could see our two drinks sitting out ready to be picked up by our waitress but she walked by them four times. She never once smiled either.

Cow Fish is a very nice Lander restaurant. The wedge salad was appetizing and the portion size was plentiful. I also enjoyed the Beer Cheese Burger, which was certainly enhanced by the addition of Jack Mormon Pale cheese. Since the burger was so tasty, I had to try the Jack Mormon Pale beer. I was not disappointed, and to top the meal off, I had one more Jack Mormon Pale.

I am torn as I write this. Let me start with the good, so I don't bury what value there is. I ordered their microbrew sampler for $8, received seven 5oz. Glasses of their entire lineup. Fantastic, top to bottom. The brewery staff is doing it right! I wish I could be as kind for the restaurant. My kids ordered "Cow Tips"... A sirloin tips dish over store bought penne. In the two dishes there were 5 and 6 small pieces of sirloin tip. Thisfor $22!! Outrageous. I noted this to the waitress who said she would notify management. Apparently that is all she did, since they did not rectify, apologize or make amends. They don't "have" to, but the fact that they sold this overpriced dish I could get at "Noodles and Co." for half of what they ask is why they get this review. I also ordered linguini with clam sauce for myself. I know..ordering clams in Wyoming is like ordering fun in Utah, but the dish was pretty good. It came in a lemon pesto that was perfect. Repeating: great beer. overpriced dishes, unresponsive staff.

Ate here with my parents and it was one of our favorite stops. Love the locally brewed beer restaurant combo. In a neat building with some great decor. My dad had the ribs which were great, my mother had the fish and chips made with rockfish which was really tasty and very fresh. I had the bison meatloaf, which was delicious and they did a great job - it was not too dry which bison can be. The service was really friendly. Overall we really enjoyed our meal here and I will return!

Ate a lovely dinner here on our way through Lander. The place was very clean with a nice ambiance. When we arrived we were promptly seated. There was a short delay between our seating and taking beverage orders. After our drinks were served and orders taken, our server delivered some complimentary bread, butter, and a bottle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Small complaint - the bread, while being a delicious sour dough, was... miniscule is the best descriptive I can come up with. Also I have no idea where you were supposed to put the olive oil/vinegar. The only bowl that came with the bread contained two small balls of butter. We mad do with out plates. The main courses were delicious. I had a blackened rib eye with garlic mashed potatoes. My friends had a steak and shrimp dinner (the Cowcrustacean) and fish & chips. The steaks were cooked to perfection, and all the food was well seasoned. All of the portions were generous. My reason for only giving 4 stars? Mainly the price. The dinners described above with a glass of beer, iced tea and pop, and one side salad come to a total of just over $85. Maybe I'm just a skinflint, but my steak came to $35 by itself. The food was good, but was it THAT good? I recommend that if you're in Lander and you would like a great meal, eat here - just bring lots of money,

While visiting town recently we were turned onto the Cow Fish. Had dinner here on a recent Sunday night with my wife and was really impressed with the quality of food and beer being served. I was a little disappointed at their menu as they serve a smaller pub menu on Sundays and Mondays but I still managed to have a great meal. Prices seemed inline with what I would expect from this type of place else where and the service was great. I look forward to returning on my next trip to town.

I had read about their pulled pork sliders on their website, and immediately fell in love! Any place that has pulled pork of any magnitude has got something AWESOME going on! To start, they serve you one of the best bread rolls you will ever have. It was so fresh and warm with the just firm enough crust to make tearing it apart, all the more delightful. I ended up mixing the oil and vinegar together to dip it it, sooooo gooooddd. Obviously I ordered the Pork Sliders, and boy I am glad I did!! Three plump little sliders were all huddled next to each other, sitting next to perfectly slight and crisp fries. The buns were light and fluffy, and ready to deliver the main attraction to your lips as a perfect compliment. Biting into the mini love lump, fills your senses with a perfectly juicy pork serenade. The BBQ flavoring was a light mustard and tomato sauce, not overwhelming by any means. It was just potent enough to accentuate the tender pork. It was just as amazing as I had thought it was going to be. The fries were also an excellent addition to the already amazing meal. My boyfriend had the Caesar Salad with Fried Anchovies. I have yet to actually get over my intense fear and loathing of anchovies, so I just ate some of the lettuce... Honestly, the Caesar Salad over at the Brewery was heads above this one. Kind of a bummer, but good to know. PS. it had NOTHING to do with the fact the lettuce was chopped (as mentioned in another review). It actually made it much more 'date food' material. It was just kind of dry and didn't have a lot going on. Granted, the crispy things that it came with (some sort of crouton?) were super great. Reasons to eat at Cowfish: -Date Night -Parents are in town -Business meeting -You just love pulled pork or amazing quality steak! Note: On the website it mentions that they have a alternate menu for different days of the week. After talking with the hostess, I found this to be untrue! Horray! They even have a separate bar section if you want less of the upscale, romantic feel. It still has a great ambiance. Long live Cowfish!!
(4)Maryn L.
First time in Lander we attended this restaurant and were blown away! The food was amazing! The fish was terrific and the service was delightful! We will definitely be going back! You just cannot go wrong here!
(5)Eric A.
My Dad and I ate here on a roadtrip recently and really liked it. The name of the place says it all, Cow and Fish. Steak and Seafood. If I'd known I was basically going to be eating meat and potatoes for the next three nights I might have picked some fish instead of the steak, but I didn't so I did and it was terrific. My dad had essentially fish and chips and said it was quite good (I was too full from my own to try any). The locally brewed beer from the attached Lander Brewing was also quite good, and a great compliment o the menu. A great place to stop for dinner, but bring a healthy appetite, or be prepared to take a box home with you.

Well, there's some things here to like and dislike. Firstly, their chef is good-spirited and catered to my friend who's vegetarian, so he made the mushrooms vegetarian (minus the beef broth) and stuffed with a light cheese. Excellent, top drawer. I had one of their specialty salads, and while I'm sure this wasn't the chef's fault, I was disappointed with the salad. The Romaine was wilted, but worst of all, it was SHREDDED, which caused the leaf to wilt all the faster, and I wouldn't ever put a knife to Romaine anyway, so eating ribbons of salad was weird to me. The lettuce was also overdressed--too much dressing! HOWEVER, having said that, the flank steak I had with it was WONDERFUL. Cooked perfectly and cut against the grain. Maybe it was just an off night in the kitchen?? But still, the mushrooms were still a delight, so I'll enclose a picture.
(2)Ken G.
Very nice dinner. Sat in the pub next to the beer that was brewing. Great menu! I had the filet. It was med rare and very tender. I would recommend this place. Nice atmosphere. Good drinks. Good food!
(4)Walter O.
The food at the Cowfish is usually very good. This is one of the better restaurants in Lander for entertaining guests. I like their trout and elk when they have it.
(5)Brent B.
This place is a find! I sat in the Lander Brewing Company side of Cowfish----so two choices for ambiance in this place.....the brew pub side and the finer dining side with the same kitchen. The spinach salad was the best I've ever had....it had heirloom cherry tomatoes, toasted hazelnuts, warmed smoked bacon that was oh so good, dates & a honey mustard vinaigrette....good news people! Joe the barkeep made this mad scientist drink that was delicious and scurvy free I believe...it had lemons and limes, ginger and basil...I believe it had Grand Teton potato vodka and it was a party in my mouth...loved it! I chatted with a local at the bar and he recommend asking the server to go easy on Gun Powder Dry Rub so you can taste the Awesomeness of the Ribeye...glad I did....because it was cooked Medium rare like I love it and was the real deal, the roasted fingerling potatoes and crispy fried leeks rounded out the meal. I can't wait to go back!
(5)Eve G.
Best meal and service I've experienced in months the local beef was outstanding . Also we had salads my husband the wedge which was done with a twist and great however I had the spinach salad and it was even better I can say the best I've ever had original and filled with delicious surprise !i give this happy friendly spot 5 stars way to go!
(5)Bobby S.
I don't like to be the nay-sayer of the reviews, but I've lived in Lander for a long time and the Cowfish is not what it was. It still is a good choice, but their menu hasn't changed in a long time and some things that used to be included (small salad) are now extra. They've lost some of their innovation, although the decor is trendy and it's still a fun place to hang out. I just wish they introduced more new dishes like they did when they first opened. I've been back a number of times since my last review and was kind of hoping things would change, but no. I think they depend a lot on people who eat here infrequently or tourists just passing through.

We ate here during our one night in Lander on our way to Yellowstone. We picked this place because of the proximity to our lodging for the night (Holiday Lodge within walking distance). The service was prompt and friendly. The portions were what you'd expect from a typical American establishment. There were lots of choices on the menu although not a lot for a vegetarian. However, this is Wyoming. We are not strictly vegetarians but we also don't eat meat often. I ordered the grilled Mahi Mahi tacos w/ Jasmine rice. My husband ordered the buffalo burger w/ blue cheese and my son ordered the kids burger & fries. My son decided he wanted cheese on his burger. Our waitress gladly went back to the kitchen to get him cheese. Our food was very good and filling. We were never w/o water or our beverage of choice. In this case it was a beer from the brewery for my husband and I. The beer is good. A good selection for light beer drinkers. The Rye is good but I preferred the Pale Ale. It has a hoppy smell but is not overpowering in hoppy flavor. This is a very nice place to eat & drink
(4)Gina C.
WOW, This is sure some good grub, lol. There is not anything that I can say that is wrong with this place. The service is top notch. Best in our area. The waitstaff seems to really want to work there instead of treating it just as a job. They know how to explain their food and I find out new things by the way they tell you about the food. They use local custom meats which are antibiotic and hormone free. They have an onsite garden which furnishes their veggies and salad makings. All organic. Cow tenderoin tips are tasty as well as their flatiron and flank steaks. They have GREAT desserts. Don't miss this place if you travel trhough the area and go there if you live here or in the area.
(5)Aaron W.
They have a good vegetarian sandwich, and delicious pizza. You can bring a beer over from next-door and make quite a night of it!
