Excellent high quality sushi. Only two sushi chefs so be prepared to be patient. Ambience is ok but food more than makes up for it. Unique and interesting rolls as well as standard sushi.

Most disappointing meal here. I will not go back, nor will my two local Jackson friends. I've eaten at Nikai every time I'm in Jackson. I have a friend in Jackson, so stop by on my way to and from East to West coast, which is quite often. I looked at my calendar & see 26 times i ate here in the past two summers. This time, after specifying a booth not in the bar(which has tv going, and I hate that in any public place, and it gets loud and rowdy always). We arrived within 5 minutes early of our reservation. The hostess walked us t a table. I clarified I had reserved, and we needed a booth for a specific reason. She smiled condescendingly and told us the booths were reserved. I said, "Yes, I reserved one, please check the names". She didn't look at her list. Said she'd check the manager, but didn't find us a table. I wish we'd left then. It never improved. Food was incredibly SLOW. I saw in today's paper they are hurting/hunting for staff, so clearly they are not prepared for the number of tables they are seating. Our table was three people with no alcohol had a bill f $73, which is pretty typical of every time we go there for sushi. I'd get wine, but they pour a 3 oz. glass and it's $9.50 for house wine. three of our sushi rolls came out on a triangle shaped platter, which caused them to put a very sweet sauce on the platter, but that was not appropriate for one of the rolls. I'm not sure what the chef was thinking with this, other than, " These people have been here so LONG, I better get them their last three rolls NOW"! Next time: trying another sushi place in Jackson. I will never go back to Nikai.

When you sit down a Nikai Sushi, don't be surprised when the waiter tells you they like to serve family style. What this will really mean is, "We are underprepared to serve sushi, and will serve you painfully slowly. This is our excuse to not awkwardly only serve one person at a time". I can't even speak to the quality of sushi here because we were so famished by the time each roll came I wouldn't have known good from bad. It got so slow at one point we decided to time the gap between each serving and were shocked when it took over 15 minutes between rolls, making our meal well over 2 hours by the time the last item came. If you're thinking about stopping by, absolutely pass and go somewhere else. There are too many good places in Jackson to waste your time here.

Didn't have a reservation, but the spot was not busy. We were seated at the bar in about 5 mins. Server took quite a while to greet us. We figured out that all you have to do was fill out the sushi checklist and hand it to the sushi maker to get things rolling. Food was very good and tasteful. The service was bad. I had to ask multiple times for a refill on my soda. My sister never even got a refill on her soda. Our server never once asked how we were doing or if we needed anything else. This is sever 101. Simple and easy tasks. If it wasn't for the good food, this would have been the worst dining experience in a while. Service was Horrible and therefore even with the food being good, I will not go back.

This place was amazing. Quick service and fresh sushi. The server was very nice and made some excellent recommendations for us. Which were great ones because we loved them all! It had a good atmosphere with lovely decor.

Surprisingly good sushi for being in Wyoming. I was, honestly, a bit suspect, but we had a grand dinner and just ordered everything on the menu. Their rolls (we didn't order any proper sushi or sashimi), while interesting and generally tasty, I thought were outshined by their appetizers. I will say that I was a bit caught off guard by the spiciness of many of those dishes, but then again I was probably not paying attention as I'd mop up the chili sauce with the piece of tuna. Solid wine list.

Had a great experience here with good friends. Cocktails were yummy and the quality of fish was on par for any nice sushi bars in the big city. The scallops, of any style are a must. I did not try much of the cooked menu items but I will be back, soon, I hope!

Painfully mediocre food that's overpriced. Underwhelming decor and ambiance, service was average at best. Long story short, I just don't get the hype around this place. The food: I ordered the ribs which are not flavored well, meat was far from falling off the bone tender. It wasn't satisfying at all so I went for the chocolate cake dessert after. While moist, the cake was too sweet and the ice cream paring wasn't done properly - too much syrup poured on the ice cream. That much syrup with the rich cake was simply too much. Service: my server constantly looked over my shoulder when he was checking on me, which made me pretty uncomfortable. He didn't bother to ask whether I had questions about the menu or make any recommendations. If this restaurant wants to market itself as upscale dining in town, I suggest putting a little more training in your servers. Decor and ambiance: entrance was nice, rest of the place was two notches up from your average Chinese restaurant at best. A couple guys were loudly discussing their weekend drunkenness at the bar. However, this could just be the night I was there. Can't call $43 expensive for the meal I had but the problem was that there's literally nothing good about it. I'm pretty sure you can get a more pleasant meal and better value for your $$ elsewhere in Jackson.

its really good, sashimi melts in you're mouth, they have actual wasabi, the proportions are perfect, sushi is supposed to produce a light fullness in one not the heavy fullness of american food that leaves you bloated leaving the restaurant, the food comes as fast as it could be, i looked into their kitchen which is open to be seen by costumers and it was clean, i had some edamame which was perfectly salted, and tasmanian salmon sashimi which was great as it melted in my mouth . btw restaurant was packed, like super packed but everything went well, so no complaints

As much as I enjoyed the sushi, the bad attitude of the staff forces me to never go back there, and I would advise others to consider this when making a decision to get sushi in Jackson. There are other places with just as good food that are much more friendly and accommodating to guests. I have empathy for the head chef who is trying really hard to put out a good product. Unfortunately, she is surrounded by a bunch of slackers who like to make rude comments about the guests. My wife and I sat at the sushi bar one night and had to listen to all these crybabies complain that the guests are demanding excellent service. Based on the prices they are charging, service is expected to be excellent! When I sent a drink back because it arrived up in a martini glass (I ordered it on the rocks), the smartass bartender told me "Well, I didn't get the memo". My wife heard one of the sushi chefs (long blonde hair, not in a hairnet!!) refer to me as a f****** a****** to one of his buddies. Nuff said.

The sushi here was actually really good. They tell you at the beginning they do it "family style...rolling one piece at a time" and that's why it's slow... I don't buy that. I think it. Isn't just take a while for them to make the rolls. They do look very pretty though. Appetizers and menu is good as well. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. The rolls were very good, I can't remember all the names but the cowboy, surf and turf, shrimp tempura, Philip (okay not the best I've had), funky salmon, spicy salmon, veggie tempura roll... Really it was all wonderful. It's just slow... Expect to be there for a bit...

You can never imagine a place as small as Jackson Hole, WY having a sushi place with tastes as big as this.l It will blow your mind. Got in early (it fills up fast!) and sat at the bar. My first mistake was not asking the chef what his recommendations were, that would have saved me a lot of time and money and would have been a lot more satisfying. I sort of started with standard fare, but was so in love I didn't realize there was better. I wouldn't have believed it if you had told me anyway! Cooper, the fabulous chef, not the fabulous waiter, was quick and on the ball. He has a serious way with sushi and knows his stuff. While I'm thinking about it let me tell you that the waitstaff here is the best you will ever find. I kid you not. I've eaten at some serious places (Ramsey at the London comes to mind), but this place designates EVERY waiter as your waiter. You can ask anyone for anything and you will instantly have it, the only wait time is the time it takes to go get what you need. I personally did love Cooper, but he was the one around the most (and certainly the cutest!), but they were all spectacular. Whew. Great service. Started out with the maguro sake poke which is cubed red tuna in a sesame soy, seaweed salad, topped with macadamia nuts. You must try this above all else. I have never had such a sweet mix of flavors in such a simple dish. The fried wonton to dip with added a nice texture and crunchy saltiness, but it really could have stood alone. Delicious. Next up was chefs choice of sashimi. It was two pieces of tuna, two of salmon and I forgot the other one. This fish is FRESH. I don't know how they do it, but it's like they went out in the back and caught it themselves. Yum. Added some delicious sake to the mix and it paired well. I, again, don't remember the name, but pretty sure you can't screw it up at this place. It's ALL good. My friend had the funky tuna tempura roll and it was really good. Nicely fried with a tangy sauce that was light and easy on the palate. Had the inferno roll which wasn't that hot, but still had a nice kick. Added some ghost pepper sauce to liven it up a little. Didn't really do much for it, but I loved the heat! The absolute highlight of dinner was the miso glazed black cod. It was sitting lightly on a bed of rice soaked in coconut milk and if your taste buds don't explode then you are obviously missing them. Had some strawbeery mochi, in staying with the sushi theme, but they had desserts that far outshone that, I'm sure. The outer shell of it was really bad. Would not repeat. But, don't let that hinder you in any way from going to this place. You will LOVE it. I miss it already! Ask for Cooper Squared! :)

Very disjointed service. Our first roll came, we ate it. Waited another 30 mins for another roll to come out and ended up canceling the remainder of our order. Good for me because I ended up eating less..bad for business though.

My wife, daughter, and I have been to Nikai several times on our prior trips to Jackson, and the restaurant has gotten to know us such that when we made a reservation they knew our name from our phone number. We had a 6:30pm reservation tonight, and when we arrived we were shown to one of two elevated tables with high chairs made for basketball players or for others desiring to feel superior to those of us requesting standard tables or booths. Given my wife and my advanced age, we requested another table that would be more comfortable for us, and there were at least 4 other tables that were suitable for our needs. Yet the woman manager told us unapologetically and emphatically that all other tables were reserved or would be needed by 7:30pm. Despite our protests and guarantees that we would be out by 7:30 the manager was unsympathetic, arrogant, and totally inflexible. Needless to say we left and will not return. On the bright side we found another Asian restaurant that was happy to accommodate us, and the food, service, and atmosphere were far superior to that of Nikai. Its review will be forthcoming. On a vacation to a superior location such as Jackson, we expect better treatment, more understanding service, and a more pleasant attitude than was provided by NIkai. What I can say about the restaurant from our prior visits it that I never became ill after eating there. Visited December 2014

Make sure you try to make a reservation , this place was busy- I got lucky and happened to be seated right away even though we didn't reserve. Hot tea was authentic and sushi was great for being out in the Jackson, Wy. If you normally turn away from sushi when your in a landlocked state...don't. I gambled and won on this one. But I didn't win on everything. Got an entree of teriyaki chicken and this was a bit disappointing. A frozen dinner version would've compared to it.

One of the worst dining experiences ever. Waiter forgot many items from our order, charged us, never came back to the table. No water refill or asked how anything was. My husbands food came out at a resumable time, our sushi, 30 min. Later, than he never put in my other sons order. Waited 1 1/2 to get his sushi. Some of the rolls r fried in tempura batter. The oil was not fresh.gross really. I talked to the manager, he comped one dish. Would never recommend or go again.

Sneaky Nikai... VERYYY sneaky. I know why your service was so very slow, because you wanted me and the rest of my party to keep on ordering while we were waiting and working up an appetite! Well your ploy WORKED... Much to my wallet's dismay! We got to Nikai RIGHT when the restaurant opened, actually we got there 5 minutes early and the doors were still locked so we had to wait outside in -10 degree weather... When we were finally allowed inside, we were seated immediately. It seemed as if the service was going to be relatively quick because there was no one else in the restaurant, ha, that's a laugh. As the minutes ticked on, more and more people arrived and I swear everyone else left before we did - Even the table with 10 people, seems to be in and out in under and hour... And they ordered more food than a pro-NFL team would. My sister and I ordered sashimi boats and I swear they had to go fly to Hawaii (and/or Alaska), catch the fish, fly back to Jackson, freeze the fish to kill the parasites, thaw and then thaw it, and then slice it up, organize it on a plastic boat and then FINALLY walk it on over to our table... That's how long it took for them to bring us our order!! And don't even get me started on our salmon skin hand rolls... Don't get me wrong, the food is quite tasty (apparently the pork belly burgers were so good even a pig would want to eat one), and I have been to Nikai before when the service didn't take years (I swear to god, I walked out of there sporting a few grey hairs), but this time around it just didn't leave a good impression on me and the rest of the people in my party. The next time I am in Jackson and we are discussing where we want to go out to eat, I am going to have to really think about whether or not I want to risk going to Nikai again for fear that the service will take an excruciatingly long time... Perhaps I should eat a snack before I go - Ha! The quality of food is quite good at Nikai though, so if you're looking to REALLY CATCH UP with the people you bring to dinner and eventually eat a few good bites of food, Nikai may wind up being your favorite dining establishment in Jackson!

Just get the Luxe Roll and scallop shooters. More of an expensive snack than a meal, but sooo good.

My favorite meal while in Jackson Hole. I had read about Maguro Sake Poke in a Yelp review and decided to take a chance. OMG. It is the BEST sushi I have ever had. My husband ordered smoked salmon nigiri (unremarkable). Our very attentive server, Cooper, recommended another dish - I wish I could remember what it was because it was delicious.

Ritzy place, overpriced sushi place, but I did appreciate their attempt to be creative with some of the flavor pairings. Hotegai sashimi special- slight barely there kick, beautiful texture, practically melts, not as sweet as I anticipated, masago and onions are ok, interesting combo but flavors still overpower the scallop. As a scallop lover I can't say that this is a winning dish. Sake roll- cut in 10 bite sized pieces, pretty basic roll that should not cost 6$, given that the fish to rice ratio isn't generous. Salmon is good quality though. Salmon skin roll special- pretty good deal 2 for $6. Well and beautifully constructed, easy to eat, good crunch and flavor, slight kick. Asian street ribs- pretty flavorful, definitely falling off the bone melting, small Portion 4 ribs. Miso glazed black cod - good subtle flavors, perfectly cooked, a little sweetness, no sear though if that's what you're looking for.

I love this place. It is very busy, & loud which is why I gave it 4 stars instead if 5, but I haven't had to wait more than 5 min for a table. Service once seated is exceptional. Food is fresh & very tasty!

2nd time we have tried to go here - first was July 2013. Both times half of the restaurant was empty and without a reservation (we just got into town) you have to wait at least an hour or more. WTF? Plus the hostess and everyone encountered was extremely rude. Won't EVER try this again!

Popped in here after a day of hiking and canoeing in Grand Teton. It's located conveniently upstairs a couple blocks off the main square. For dinner, I went with a garden salad and the TNT roll. The garden salad had a delicious sesame vinegarette dressing and the TNT roll had the perfect amount of spice. The service was quick, friendly, and on the ball. Would surely venture back here if I ever make it back to Jackson Hole.

Nice decor, decent food (at least what I've had so far), HORRIBLE service. Ordered nearly an hour ago and still waiting on everything besides one roll as I write this review. Server didn't ask if we wanted anything to drink. Hasn't come to check on us the entire time. Empty plate has been sitting here without being cleared. Restaurant isn't even all that busy (weekday night, lots of empty tables). Prices are high. I'm leaving a $0.01 tip for sure (assuming I ever get out of here).

I don't like giving this place a bad review, because I usually love it. But last night was seriously disappointing. The rolls were not fresh tasting and ingredients overcooked. But the service was horrendous. We sat forever waiting for our check--finally taken care of by the hostess. It'll be awhile before we return.

Some friends of our had a fairly poor experience on a really busy night the previous weekend (reserved table given away, food order mixed up); but since it is the best sushi in town - we thought we would give it a shot on a Sunday evening. The food was excellent - and they sat us at a table even though we hadn't made a reservation. Unfortunately the kitchen took forever and dinner for the two of us (two rolls, an appetizer) took over an hour and a half. No one even bothered to address the delay. The place wasn't packed, so it's hard to explain away. We will definitely be back - but you should allow a lot of extra time and really need a reservation on busier evenings.

I was very skeptical about trying sushi in Jackson, Wyoming. This place was AMAZING! We ordered 4 rolls and each one was delicious and plentiful! One roll we ordered had a spicy sauce drizzled on the side (the name is on the tip of my fingertip and won't find it's way onto the keyboard!), but it had eel and crab. That was definitely my favorite one. The caterpillar roll was very good, however the eel sauce that was on top was a bit on the sweet side. I hope to have the chance to visit there again next time I'm in town!

No. This place just finally hit the last straw from me. Local for 8 years, I probably come here 3-4 times a year, and just had my last visit ever. Here's why, 1. it's f(&%(&$#% freezing in there. It doesn't matter what time of year, it's just cold, all the time, I'm talking go get your down jacket from the coat rack kind of cold. 2. The family style serving style does not work with sushi-- we had a huge group and a huge order, and every 20 minutes or so they'd bring out 1 roll, it was a tease, and not the good kind. 3 hours later once our "dinner" was finished, we drove to the grocery store and picked up something to actually satisfy our stomachs. 3. The fish portions are small and although they don't seemingly stink, the rolls will hardly satisfy even the tiniest of tummies. If you buy 4 rolls per person, you're probably good. 4. The service is extraordinarily bad. bad. bad. 3 different waitors, all of them seemingly frustrated by our requests of, can you bring more than one roll out a time, and extras. This restaurant is just bad. Don't waste your money on sushi in Wyoming, any other restaurant will leave you more satisfied. Honestly... Wendy's does better than this.

delicious chirashi - but a little pricey, even if that's to be expected in jackson.

Good sashimi - confusing labeling. I was impressed that they actually labeled escolar as such as most sushi restaurants label this white tuna which escolar is not. The only disappointment was the "real wasabi". It was mostly dried horseradish paste with a bit of real wasabi grated in. I think the waiter got a kick out of serving it as he said "here is your real wasabi". It didn't bother me as he was in Jackson for the skiing, not the sashimi. The sashimi was good but uneven with fantastic Tasmanian Salmon - which is an Atlantic Salmon farm raised in Tasmania, Australia. The yellowtail was medium quality as the cuts had a bit too much bloodline. I had the yellowtail Nigiri and in the Nobu knockoff dish called Hamachi Mariachi. The yellowtail pieces in the Nobu-like dish were very large and they were less desirable (much bloodline) cuts of a yellowtail. The yellowtail cuts for the nigiri were slightly better. The best dish was the steelhead salmon sashimi special although I have no idea what steelhead salmon is as steelhead is usually used interchangeably with rainbow trout but it was fantastic either way. While I am on a labeling rant, they serve "Red Tuna" on the menu. I am not sure if this is Yellowfin, Bluefin, or Bigeye (three common tunas with red flesh) but I have never heard of Red Tuna and thus didn't order. This place is probably best for drinks and some of the more complex sushi rolls as they are probably awesome as they seem to put a lot of effort into sushi rolls and have a huge selection although I didn't try any.

I read the other reviews and let me tell you - this is my favorite place in Jackson Hole. Our family owns a house in Jackson and we have tried ALOT of places - I am not a huge fan of sushi in general but everything that comes out of this place is amazing! I have never had a bad meal - cowboy roll ( to die for) Service is spotty - we always have a so-so table but its ALWAYS packed - I recommend reservations which you can do thru their website (very convenient) - it can be a tad snobby but its Jackson Hole... people are nice but have money (more than us) and thats how they act... We usually save this for one of our big nights out and we have never been disappointed. It does take a while because the sushi bar is small and the sushi comes out as its made... not all at once...

  • Nate O.

Place was really good. Went here with my fiancé on Valentines Day weekend after reading the good reviews. Place was packed. Usually a good sign. We sat down and ordered. Everything was great. The only bad thing was everything comes to your table as it's ready. I got my first piece of sushi (ama ebi) and 40 minutes later my fourth and final piece came out. Lots of waiting in between. That is literally my only complaint. I've had sushi all over the states from my homeland in NC, to Umi Sushi in Seattle and everyone in between. Not the best I've ever had, but damn near the top. Great place!

  • Jason L.

Five stars is for the food! Fish is always fresh. An item I haven't seen elsewhere and worth trying is the scallop shooter, delicious! Chefs Laura and Cooper know how create amazing flavor combinations and turn them into art! I'm a semi-regular at Nikai and lover of sushi. When traveling, my best girl and I often go for sushi and Nikai is the standard very rarely matched and yet to be bested! Don't let geography fool you... Through the travels one thing that has become apparent is: don't trust Yelpers when it comes to sushi. Some of the highest rated places serve neon pink pickled ginger and neon wasabi - food should not be loaded with artificial colors. Back to Nikai, I really only eat the sushi - that's why I go. I can't say anything about the grill but people tell me it is good. The service is usually very good, but there is high turnover among the front of house... If you like sushi, I mean if you prefer sashimi to a kalifornia roll, you have to try Nikai when you are in Jackson!

Nikai used to be my favorite restaurant in Jackson. But this time, after several visits that I thought were merely speed bumps, I'm just bummed. It starts with being seated near the bathrooms when the entire restaurant is pretty much empty. Despite a short discussion with the seater, we were relegated to that table. Admittedly, then, I didn't start the evening in the nicest frame of mind. But that was followed by somewhat lackluster rolls. Which can be fine or not, but my main point here is the service. Although our waiter tried hard, and we enjoyed him, the rest of the service crew just seems to be going through the motions. Nikai's table service has always depended on who was waiting tables, but what that tells me is that whoever is training the crew needs a refresher course on how to run the room. I'm not impressed, and Nikai is no longer a place I absolutely have to eat at.

Overrated! Service was ok, however, the quantity and portions of food was worse than a kiddie meal. Yes, the server told us that food would come out at different times, however, 2 pieces of cooked eel shouldn't take 15 minutes. The Udon Noodle fish had a few strands on noodles and a few bite sizes of tofu. Not what I was expecting. I read previous reviews and thought that a So Cal resident should give Jackson sushi a try. NOT! I should have looked at the sushi chefs and noticed they weren't of Asian descent. As the saying goes "looks good walking off the bus" - this place looked and sounded good. You are better off at a small local dive in town such as Cowboy, Snake River, etc.

Friendly service and delicious specialty rolls! Specialty rolls are around $15 which is fairly reasonable for the tourist area of Jackson. I worked in GTNP for the summer and would order take-out from Nikai fairly often, a couple of times when my order wasn't quite ready when I arrived they seated me and offered miso soup while I waited. Really neat vibe in the restaurant and convenient public parking is available across the street. If you're on crutches or have difficulty with stairs be warned - it's on the second floor with no elevator access.

I came to this restaurant with my friend Adam C. who used to be a local. My meal was pre-empted by Adam's promises that this would be the best sushi ever. Naturally, I was very skeptical b/c the restaurant is located in northwest Wyoming and is a million miles from the nearest ocean. To my GREAT surprise, this place has some of the freshest, most creative and delicious sushi I have ever had. The escolar was my favorite (a type of mackerel referred to as "butter fish" b/c it melts in your mouth and just tastes absolutely delicious). Despite their very well written and extensive menu, my advice is to blindly have the sushi chef prepare you whatever he/she is in the mood for. In fact, I recommend you sit at the sushi bar and ask for Lori. I will put it to you this way... Lori is an artist and sushi is her canvass. Her dishes are colorful, creative, and will blow your taste buds away - seriously. The service is A+ and the restaurant is very clean. The decor is modern and stylish. They also have a very good Saki list. For the first time, I found Saki that I actually preferred served chilled. When serving chilled Saki, they bring out a device that looks like a decanter/bong. The center glass gets filled with ice and the surrounding glass gets filled with Saki. This way your Saki gets chilled but does not get watered down by melting ice. VERY COOL. Bottom line - I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Jackson Hole or anyone on a mission to uncover the great restaurants in this country. Put simply, it is an A++ operation all around. Very upscale, fairly priced, delicious, and excellent service.

This restaurant was a hit for us. The cocktails are off the hook creative and delicious. I had a Sake Fiz, which is raspberry sake, champagne, and raspberries. YUM! The sushi is super fresh and creatively prepared, although I'm just a sucker for a plain ol' spicy tuna roll. The tempura my father-in-law ordered was cooked well. The miso soup - just as good as I've had anywhere. My husband ordered the KFC - Korean fried chicken - I wished I had ordered that! It was crispy and yet tender and succulent with a divine dipping sauce. I ordered the Indonesian Kobe Beef Satay, which was good, the peanut/coconut dipping sauce was a bit heavy and I opted for soy sauce instead. My mother-in-law had the panko-breaded salmon, which was good, if not slightly overcooked. My father-in-law had the stir-fry, which I didn't taste, but looked good. We were too full for dessert. The ambiance was lively and upbeat, and the service was friendly. I'd recommend this place for a nice, not too expensive, night on the town.

I can't remember the last time I was blown away by a restaurant. I was totally caught off guard by a dinner-only sushi bar in Jackson of all places. The decor was very sleek and modern with only a hint of rustic which is a nice break from the sometimes overwhelming theme in Jackson. The service was prompt and gave us ample attention. She warned us that the sushi bar and the grill do not operate in tandem so we would likely get grill items first and sushi items close to last. The pork belly entreé really was quite delicious. Very soft it almost melted in your mouth with a sweet glaze. The sushi was well worth the price with modest portions and great presentation. The albacore tuna special we had was quite awesome; my wife almost convinced me that we needed to get a second order. The quality of the tuna as well as the sauce made it quite a treat. Our standard tuna rolls were small but pretty darn well-wrapped. We also tried the tiger rolls which were also very delicious and will definitely need to try them again elsewhere to see what we have missed at other sushi places. Given the context of the touristy Jackson area, this place deserves a 5 out of 5. If this was Portland or Seattle, I would rate it a little differently. Still, I will MOST DEFINITELY come back when we are in the area.

I came in here expecting some star quality food, seeing all the great reviews. We walk in, and I guess you need to make a reservation. They had no tables available (restaurant was empty when we walked in) and only the sushi bar had some seats. So I thought - I guess this place must be super good, seeing that everyone makes reservation far in advance. So when we look at the menu, there's not much on the menu that my family is accustomed to eating. The menu selections are a bit fusiony(?). We ordered a chicken teriyaki dish, yakisoba stir fry, and a roll. I was VERY disappointed in the chicken teriyaki. I come from a neighborhood where there are TONS of excellent japanese restaurants for a much better price. And honestly, I didn't think you could go wrong with chicken teriyaki, but I guess you can. The chicken honestly looked like it was steamed and just lightly grilled, seeing the faded tan (not even brown) grill marks. The chicken looked very pale. The sauce... it was barely on the chicken. I think for aesthetic purposes they drizzled it, but there was barely any on, and you eat teriyaki chicken for that sweet, thick, tangy sauce. I was curious how the sauce tasted because it looked so watery... so I scraped a little and tried the sauce (not the chicken), and it tasted like soy sauce cooked with other stuff. The flavor of the sauce was just not balanced and more so on the salty side. The stir fry noodles. I think I was expecting something more japanese style yakisoba, but it felt more like noodles stir fried in veggies that are found more in chinese dishes with a lot of oyster/soy sauce. And this dish came out last after my family was already half-done eating. I didn't try any of the sashimi, so I cannot judge what fish is like, but as for the hot dishes... I don't think I would come back for them.

I had THE most awkward experience a couple nights ago. Here's the story I posted to Facebook. It's long, but have fun if you wanna take the time to read it... "They weren't super busy - about 80% full. The three guys I was eating with ordered 10 sushi rolls to split and an appetizer, and I ordered the ribs and some tempura to eat as a side with my ribs. I also ordered the toasted brown rice tea. My buddy inquired at this time as to whether or not they have any green tea and our waiter responded by saying that the toasted brown rice tea that I ordered was actually a green tea. He then asked him if he wanted some of the same tea I was getting and my buddy was jokingly acting a little sketched out at the idea of toasted brown rice tea and that he would wait until mine came out to see what it's like and then maybe order the tea then. This story of the tea becomes important later on. A food runner came back about 10 mins later and brought us the tempura I ordered as well as the appetizer the other guys ordered. The pot sticker things they ordered were fantastic and I just nibbled on my tempura because I wanted to wait for the ribs to come out. Our waiter stopped back by to give us a water refill and asked how everything was. I commented at this time that the tempura was great but that I was going to wait for the ribs to come out in order to eat it all together. He really didn't say much but did acknowledge that he heard me. So then about every 5 mins or so a food runner would bring out another plate of sushi and the fellas really enjoyed feasting on it while I patiently waited for my ribs and nibbled on my tempura. About 30 mins in my tea never came and we joked about that a little at our table. I just told the fellas that it's not a big deal and hopefully we don't get charged for it. About 45 mins into the meal and with the fellas nearly done with all their sushi, my one friend asked the food runner to check on the ribs that I had ordered. The food runner checked and came back and told us they would be up immediately. No explanation given by the food runner but it was pretty obvious that our waiter had forgotten to put in the order for the ribs. No big deal. The guys at the table felt really bad for me for having to wait so long and that they had pretty much finished their food before I got mine, but we all just kind of joked about it and made good with the situation. Our waiter came back over 10 mins later (about and hour into our meal now) and asked how everything was (pretty much wanting to scoot us on our way). I inquired about the ribs and he looked over at the food line and told me that they were up and that he would grab them for me. I told the guys at our table that it was all no big deal and that I was sure he wouldn't charge me for those ribs. So when he brought me the ribs and before I had even touched them, I made sure to ask him, "I won't be charged for these ribs, right? I sat here for over 45 mins waiting while everyone else ate so if you're planning on charging me for those ribs, just go ahead and take them back." He didn't apologize. He made an excuse as to how they just serve the food as the kitchen makes it and that it wasn't his fault they came out so late. So I just asked again if he was going to charge me for them and he pretty much said yes so I said that he can just take them back. By the way, any of you who have waited tables like I have know that his excuse was a bold faced lie. He totally forgot to put the rib order in until we had to ask the food runner to check on them 45 mins into our dinner. So whatever. Now I'm more upset that the guy would lie to me and make an excuse rather then just own up to his mistake and throw me a discount. So we sit at the table for another 5 mins discussing everything that happened. It's all somewhat light hearted. I let the guys finish my tempura that has long gone cold now. They all felt horrible for me but I explained to them that I'll just grab a burger from Wendy's and that I really enjoyed just hanging out with them even if I didn't get to eat. AND!! I also pointed out that we had all just sat there for over an hour without anyone pulling out an iPhone! What a miracle this day in age! One of my buddies saw our waiter and decided he wasn't quite pleased with how everything turned out so he went over to the waiter and exchanged some words with him. So the waiter comes back over to our table and is super apologetic now. He says he's really sorry about the ribs and offers the same excuse as before about the kitchen just making everything a la carte and they just bring it out as they make it (by the way, we saw no less than 4 orders of ribs go out before mine came out). He then proceeded to stand at our table for at least 5 mins telling us he didn't want us to leave unhappy and that he would do whatever it takes to make us happy. Running over the text limit, but it was the strangest and most awkward exchange ever. I wanted to hide under our table.

Really good place! I like the atmosphere, which is warming and welcoming. The services were good, all the waitress were careful and served in time. And the food was delicious too! The sushi was good, and the price was reasonable. I had a really big bowl of udon soup and only cost $10. I made the sushi to go because the soup made me full already.

Quality that matches the best on the west coast! Chic atmosphere with a friendly staff. I would highly recommend this restaurant and will come back again the next time I am in Jackson Hole.

Recently moved to eastern Idaho and went to Jackson after doing some hiking on the Idaho side. My girlfriend likes sushi, me not as much, so when we saw a sushi place in Jackson I have to say I was skeptical about sushi in an odd location like Jackson, but it was, according to her very delicious. She ordered a sushi roll (I unfortunately do not remember which one) and I ordered the Snake River Farms Pork Belly, which was a tad bit overpriced and well...we ate at Applebee's later that evening if that gives you an indication of serving size. I tried her sushi and it was quite good but i am not in any way knowledgeable about sushi, the mustard type sauce it was in was really good. My pork was dry and a bit crunchy served with rice, that's it, no vegetables or any other sides, a half cup of rice with a few bits of glazed pork. The service was sub-par, nothing notable. The ambient noise wasn't bad at all and we were told the wait for a table would be a 1.5 hours or we could sit immediately at the sushi bar. We chose the sushi bar and it was fine with us. Overall it was fun and we didn't wait very long for our food but it was overpriced, exactly what i would expect in Jackson so i guess its not really a surprise.

WOW! This place is amazing! So good my friends and I ate here twice in 3 days. The stir-fry was deeeelicous! The sushi was some of the best I have ever had. Miso Glazed Black Cod was out of this world. From start to finish this place killed it. Great vibe, great staff. I wish I was closer I'd be a regular.

I ended up having a valentines dinner after all, my sister flew all the way from California to make it happen. Well, she was already coming to ski with me but it doesn't take away from our fun, impromptu sushi meal. We only ordered two sushi rolls and a dessert, which was all we needed. With the Olympic pairs figure skating on the TV, I'd say the meal was almost perfect...The two rolls were funky hamachi (yes, that's the name) and a special roll with the word geisha in the title. The "funky" rolls featured the entire roll deep fried tempura style and garlic aioli, we simply choose the fish. I didn't love this roll because I felt between the tempura crust and the aioli the flavor of the hamachi was completely lost. The garlic aioli was also too creamy for my liking, especially with sushi (not that I think I've ever had aioli and sushi). The second dish was very good though. If my memory serves me, the roll was a spicy lobster and tempura asparagus, topped with red tuna, avocado and sweet spicy chili sauce. This one I could have ordered again because it was delicious. I'm a huge fan of anything with avocado or tuna and the sweet chili sauce was perfect. The tempura asparagus also added an enjoyable extra dimension. However, the show stealer of the evening was our dessert, something that neither one of us planned on until we saw one go by to the table next to us. Honestly, we were trying to get our server's attention for the bill, and when she came over we ordered a fried banana split instead. I don't need to make an comments or descriptions, the picture pretty much sums it up. So that was our short but sweet (pun intended) meal. While we both had valentines elsewhere in the country this evening, I think we both agree loving siblings isn't a bad alternative.

Recommend the short ribs over wasabi mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus with truffle oil, & cucumber salad. I love sushi and have enjoyed some great rolls including in Japan. I thought the inferno roll was average and the calamari was oily with breading flaking off/ too many tentacle pieces. Waiter very nice/ attentive and saki bloody Mary had great kick. Only suggestion- restaurant was drafty /cold- hope it was off night for HVAC.

A local favorite, but it can be hit or miss. If you open-table a reservation, don't sit in Jay's section. He's too busy chatting with other employees or friends he's know at other tables to pay attention to you. We waited almost 15 mins before he greeted our table for a drink order (so we were ready to order everything) Our second round or drinks never came, so we left and had drinks and dessert at Thai me up (so good!) Sadly it might be awhile until we return, Masa has much better customer service and great Sushi as well.

It's not that the food wasn't good; for the most part, it was. While nothing special by major-city standards, I suppose fresh tasting and creative sushi deserves more credit in Jackson, Wyoming. Nevertheless, we walked out fairly disappointed in our experience, mainly because of the service. Our waitress was aloof and almost rude. To give an example of how our interactions went throughout the evening: [us, chopsticks in hands, eating from the rolls that had already been brought to our table; her, bringing a new roll] her: here's your rainbow roll [holds roll above table] us: you can just set it down anywhere her: [sneering] i'm trying and then she waited idly for us to rearrange all of the items on our table before she set the roll down. Anyway, she also very much failed us in some other areas, like allowing us to order an absurd sushi roll whose name I cannot remember, but which was disgused with japanese-sounding ingredients and came literally swimming in honey or something else similarly sweet, and which should have been on the dessert part of the menu. So perhaps... when in Rome, don't force yourself to this particular sushi spot, and stick with the red meat.

Great sushi, staff, & environment!!! You get way more than you pay for. My husband said the Bonsai roll was the best sushi he's ever had.

Our last night in Jackson we decided to search for something other than a large steak. It was Tuesday night so we didn't think we needed a reservation. Upon arrival we were very wrong on that. The place was packed and we thought we were going to have to go somewhere else. The manager Alex came over and greeted us. Offered us the best service we had on our whole trip to Jackson Hole. Not only did he find us a space to wait and have a drink he got us a table within 20 minutes even though their reservation list was full. Throughout the night he came over and checked on us to see how everything was. Besides the service being excellent the sushi was just as good. They had many unique rolls and fish that was fresh. Between the Saki, Sushi & Service this will be one of our first stops next time we are in Jackson.

I am from country of Sushi and visited Jackson for vacation. I never expected Sushi there but there was. Beside, every single Sushi is Good!( we had more than 10 kinds) I love Ikura (salmon egg) from my childhood and it was as delicious as I have in my home country without doubt. Edamame is salty and soft enough, the beer glass is chilled before served, which are required standard to say "Japanese" restaurant for me . The woman who served us was very nice, too. When I am satisfied, I always give 4 stars. So, I give 4.

Went with our friends that met us here in Jackson. Tried several of the dishes, and while they were certainly good...they weren't over the top...with the exception of one. The Hamachi Mariachi, the Truffled Tuna, and the Sashimi Blossom were all good. Again, nothing over the top, but good. The Miso Soup and the Crispy Rice Soup were both terrific. Great flavors and textures. Entree time. The Vietnamese Street Rib was ok. I guess I was expecting it to be more of a short rib...off the bone. But you had to work at it to get the meat. Problem is, the meat wasn't all that tender, so you really did have to work at it. The Miso Glazed Black Cod, however, was an outstanding dish. We tend to order the cod at any sushi places that we visit, and this one had a terrific charred crust on the outside. Typically, they seem a little more "steamed" to where the miso glaze is more of a liquid. But here they gave it that good char, so that the caramelization just added to the dish. Good place to visit while in Jackson. Just a little hit and miss, but limited seating, so they definitely keep the place full. Make your reservation...walk ins would be tough.

Solidly average. After reading the other yelpers great reviews I had to give it a try. Seriously why the 4 and 5 stars? All the hype must be because it's decent sushi in Wyoming. Nice looking restaurant and they got our order right but so what. The service was slow but no knocks there because it was a busy Friday evening. The next day I asked some locals what all the hype was about. They informed me that the place had been in a slide the last few months. If you have a hankering for sushi it's the best place in town but don't expect a 5 star sushi experience.

Not a bad place in a good location. We were a party of 3 and service started really slowly. In fact after our drink order, I think our waiter forgot about us - and after a long time, he spotted us and made a b-line toward our table.....I think he realized that he went MIA, because he was actually holding dirty plates from another table when he asked us if we knew what we wanted (ugh). We kept it easy and ordered edamame and 7 rolls.....then a very long wait - once the rolls started to come, he brought 2. Then 5 minutes later he brought 2 more. Then 15 minutes later (really) he brought 2 more.....and another 7 or 8 minutes until the final roll.......so it was not only really slow - but scattered the rolls across 30 or 40 minutes. The waiter was nice, everyone was pleasant, and the room was nice, but it was an odd way to have dinner served. So how was the sushi?....it was good. It was fine. Probably B minus. There was a lot of sauce on the special rolls, and a number of them were falling apart, but they tasted fresh and the rice was good. Overall, with better service it might be a 4, but our experience last night was much more of a 3.

I'd like to give this 4.5 stars, but whatever. Everything was great here. The rolls are a little on the pricey side, but if you're looking for a fun, nice dinner with friends or just a significant other, this is a great option.

Fresh, sashimi grade fish in Wyoming, you bet! This establishment consistently provides top notch sushi rolls and sashimi at a reasonable price. The selection doesn't change much, however the rolls are creative and the portions are ample. Great place to bring a group, or a date, with a fun, upbeat atmosphere. Four stars for the mediocre sake list, but otherwise, Nikai sushi is top notch!

Looks like I am not the only one to love the place! One of my two favorite restaurants in Jackson. Best Margarita in town and beyond I would say (the Coconut Margarita!), sometime I go there just for that. Try the Beef Nirvana and the Bonzai roll. I get those every single time... The staff is friendly, great atmosphere and best drinks in town.. A must!

This restaurant serves Sushi but it is not reasonable price and the tast is not fresh. If you need to eat Sushi, this is the only place in town but you can have many good restuarants so I recommend the other restaurants. The service when we visited was bad. I will never come back again.

I've had good sushi all around the world including in Japan and this is the best I have ever had. I have no idea how a sushi restaurant in Wyoming is this good. I also had an amazing wine there that I had never seen before called Cali Girl, they had a Moscato and a Chardonnay from this winery that paired incredibly well with the food and it was surprisingly affordable, Great wine and great sushi in area as beautiful as Jackson Hole, it doesn't really get better than that.

I am with a previous reviewer in that I would like to give 4.5 stars. I am from Seattle, eat Sushi like there is no tomorrow, and this was great. You should have reservations to be safe, but we didn't (mid-week) and got a spot at the Sushi bar. The Sushi chef serving us was great (20-something guy who clearly loved the outdoor lifestyle in Jackson), and the Sushi was amazing across the board (hand rolls drool-worthy). The one star is reserved because of the price and that they could use an extra chef or two at peak hours. Our poor guy was working as fast as possible but the wait for each dish was still long.

Did not expect a sushi restaurant in Jackson, and Nikai was a very pleasant surprise for sure! We sat at the sushi bar as all of the tables were reserved - it was perfect! The sushi is awesome! Our waiter was attentive and polite. I thought the price of the food was appropriate. Would recommend making reservations if you plan on dining there. If you are a sushi lover, you must stop in.

I have to say, this is actually one of the best place to have sushi in Jackson. Really good food, everything on the menu is worth trying. They are a little pricey, but it's worth the money. The place is a little formal, but Jackson standard for formal is more casual every where else. Excellent service.
