Passing through Dubois on a road trip. Delicious food! Fun atmosphere! Hubby had the tasty Ultimate Burger. Fries were crispy without even asking! I had the Chicken Brie Salad. They loaded the salad with chicken, pecans, onions, cranberries, olives, Brie - even a boiled egg. No scrimping here! Place was full of customers, and the service was great!

"Here I sit, ass cheeks a'flexin', just gave birth to a Texan." -Anonymous I discovered this couplet written on the men's restroom wall directly upon my arrival at the Cowboy Café. Now, being a native Texan and all, you'd think I'd be offended. Nope. Just made me laugh. But made me wonder: Do people in Dubois, Wyoming hate Texans for some reason? I'd been here a week already, and besides the couple who run the True Value Napa store across the street (be sure to read that review), I found the locals to be kind, down to Earth, and mostly friendly and welcoming. Does to owner of the Cowboy Café hate Texans? Perhaps he/she does. Otherwise, why would they leave such an offensive poem written on the bathroom wall? I'd just arrived and hadn't even sat down at the table yet, and already I was bracing myself for the worse. After all. there's no way I can hide my accent. They're going to know where I'm from, even if I can keep myself from telling them without their asking. I'll just keep my mouth shut as much as possible, and maybe they won't spit in my food. I left the restroom and joined my other two friends at the table on the front patio, our waitress was there taking drink orders. Before I could sit and order some water, one of my compatriots immediately informed the waitress that "we're from Texas" and the beans had already spilt before I could warn them not to open the can. Damn. Why do we Texans find it so necessary to tell EVERYONE where we're from as soon as we meet them? I'm not sure. We just can't help it. The waitress could have been feigning it, but she genuinely seemed okay with the fact that we were all Texans. In fact, she was quite nice and attentive throughout our entire lunch. Friendly and pleasant. Nevertheless, I checked my chicken-fried steak sandwich for any signs of saliva. It was totally free of spit, and quite good! In fact, it was the best chicken-fried steak I've had in a while! And that's sayin' something, cause I'm from Texas where they invented the damn thing! But here's why this place gets one of my rare 5 STAR reviews, even after they left the "Texan's Are Poop" poem written on the bathroom wall: The Pies. And there's many of them, way too many to try them all. The waitress brought out a whiteboard with a couple of dozen different pies written on it! So I tried three - mine (Apple Blackberry) and a bite of my each of my friend's (German Chocolate and rhubarb something-or-other). I normally don't like German Chocolate pie. Can't stand coconut shavings, love the flavor, but hate the texture. I know, it's weird... but based on just one single bite of this one, I'd chug down an entire German Chocolate pie from Cowboy Café all by myself! I'm not even sure what a rhubarb is, but that bite was heaven as well. As for my own Apple-Blackberry pie... I was licking the plate. Is licking all the pie goo off the plate a Texas thing? Probably. No wonder they hate us in Dubois, WY - we Texans are just a bunch of pie-plate licking turds!

Best pie EVER!! We were driving from California back to NYC and saw the Cowboy Cafe listed on the Dubois City website so we decided to check it out. The woman who helped us had big beautiful Dolly Parton hair (swoon) so we knew we were in the right place. Across from us were 5 REAL Cowboys having dinner which only made our experience that much better. Highly recommend!

Driving through on our road trip in the West; made a choice for lunch and this was the place. Sandwich (roasted turkey with melted Munster cheese, grilled onions, chutney) with thick "homemade" chips and burger with great fries were delicious, but it's the pies--OMG--it's the pies that will slay you! Several combinations with rhubarb: hubs had blueberry with rhubarb and I had rhubarb with a crumbled candied ginger topping. We love rhubarb and cannot get enough of it, so this fit the bill perfectly! A la mode included a generous portion of vanilla ice cream. Our service was attentive and friendly. We cannot recommend this place highly enough, so make sure to stop in.

Great food and service. I would go out of my way to eat here. I reminds me of our cafe back home. They don't skimp on the food, the omelette was great.
(5)Timothy Z.
Neat little breakfast spot. We split the breakfast sampler. Plenty for two. It was quite delicious. The place was right down the main street from our lodge. I would highly recommend this place for a delicious breakfast before heading out to the parks.
(5)Sam Y.
Came in after a 5 day camping trip. The burgers were exceptional. The service, exemplary, and the pie....the pie was outstanding. Strong, strong recommend.
(5)Dwayne G.
When we saw all the fresh pies available, we opted to eat light with the quesadilla appetizer and then tear into a couple of pieces of pie for desert. The Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie and the Irish Crème Pecan Pie were both heavenly.

highly recommended if you like home style cooking and you eat breakfast and think that it is the most important meal of the day! The coffee is not great, however they can't do everything to perfection. Home made pie is something to request. it's a good sign that it's always a full house
(5)Sandy R.
Great food, friendly staff. Good coffee and delicious pecan pancakes. Would eat there again.

I had the pleasure of dinning here a couple times while in town and the food is great. Authentic WY vibe and regular stop for the locals. I will be back:)
(5)Todd V.
The food here is marginally above average but the pies are spectacular and there are a ton to choose from hence the 4 stars. They always have red and green Chile they where both pretty good. I would avoid the pork tamales though.

My buddy and I each had the Big T Dog burger (I think that's what it was called). It was a burger on sourdough with thousand island and onion rings. Very tasty! The fries were good, too. Service was better than I expected for how slammed they were right before closing time. You could tell staff was stressed, but they remained calm and professional with everyone in the place. I'd definitely return! The restaurant down the street basically turned us away due to a long wait time, so I'm glad we found this gem!

A whole lot of deliciousness!! I highly recommend this place for breakfast!! I had The Wake Up Call for breakfast. Was awesome!!! My wife had some Elk and Buffalo sausage that was spicy awesome. :) like I said highly recommend this place for breakfast.
(5)Steven R.
Service was efficient, maybe a little curt. For the price, I thought the portion size was on the smaller side. Inside is shabby but that didn't really hurt. Kids all liked their French toast and ham. Coffee was decent. Not many alternatives here in town. Better than village inn or Denny's I suppose.

I can't say I myself have eaten here but my daughter took a school trip and she did and boy she just raved. For a picky child that can find something wrong with boiled peas I was astounded when she said her whole meal was just Yuuuuummmmyyyyy. For that alone I know this place is superb . when we make our way there together I know Cowboy Cafe will be on our list.
(5)Glow W.
Not a local = not welcome. Did not receive traditional Wyoming hospitality. Ordered a chicken sandwich but got cheeseburger instead. Bad service overall.
(1)Karin M.
Great service, fantastic food. Trout was heavenly and the country fried steak was just right. Don't forget to get sweet potato fries as your side! If you manage to have room for dessert give their pies a try!
(5)Tess P.
This is an unforgettable food experience on our trip in Yellowstone. Before we had dinner, we ate some ice cream across the street. And we ask the owner of the store where is the great restaurants around the area, and he tells us 1st this restaurant before the other place. And Yes his absolutely right to pick a good one for us.My eyes rolling around to see some other costumers food, and it's all looks so.... Good. Make us hungry while waiting our food to serve. And they serve the food so quickly. Omg!!! Love it.Plus the staff are very friendly and hospitable.
(5)Michael L.
Thanks to other users of Yelp we ate here. six of us and everyone asked how I found this nice cafe serving real food. If you're not a big eater, split something and then you'll have room for the pie.
(5)John A.
I was told that the Cowboy Cafe wasn't open by the innkeeper next door. He recommended other restaurants in town that my fellow yelpers didn't review as highly as Cowboy Cafe. We ventured to see if he was correct and fortunately he misinformed us and they were open. Breakfast was great. The eggs were on point as were the potatoes. The toast was even extra delicious. The best part was the coffee. Restaurant coffee is usually somewhere between mediocre and awful, but Cowboy Cafe's was pretty darn tasty. As a matter of fact most of the restaurant coffee I tried in the northern US was pretty good by comparison, but I really enjoyed the coffee here. My only qualm was that I needed to bring my own raw sugar. I play the cub scout in these situations and I come prepared. The food wasn't cheap, but it wasn't expensive either and the server was very friendly. The locals were raving about the pies too, but I can't do it for breakfast. If I make another pass through Dubois I will definitely return to the Cowboy Cafe.
(4)Craig M.
If your not a local I'd keep walking. This IS that place that's packed to the grill with locals that all stopped eating to look up and watch your every step as you try to make your way to the front. Oh and the front. You'll stand there for five minutes while the one waitress is busy chatting up Cletus then tells you you can't sit outside because she's the only one working and conveniently there are no spots to sit at inside. Then she acts surprised there is nowhere to sit. So basically the locals wanted us to leave is the feeling we got. So we did.
(1)Robert G.
Five stars for the pies! Yahhoooooooo! Best in the west! Stopped in to this place for their famous home baked pies and coffee. Perfect stop!
(5)Mike C.
Not a local, but the service was good, and the waitress was really friendly BTL was great (a little pricey) as was the pie.
(4)Joy S.
After driving through Yellowstone this was on our way to Texas... We had great customer service even being so close to closing! We ordered the ribeye and elk sausage, all was very good. You cannot leave without pie!
(5)Paula H.
Cute place. Friendly waitstaff. Local color. I had a roast beef sandwich with au jus which was ok. Served with potato chips. Didn't save room for pie which is the specialty but I saw them in the piesafe and they didn't look homemade- "machine-crimped edges" -or even appetizing.
(4)Lisa B.
Awesome food, awesome service! Super friendly folks and great pie! Get the cowboy Benedict!
(5)Eve L.
This place is adorable! It is an actual cowboy cafe...not a gimmick, actual cowboys eat here! We walked in to find the Cowboy Cafe packed w/ folks in ten gallon hats and cowboy boots. The restaurant is clean and decor is simple; horse tack, etc. pinned to the pine walls. What's really special is the food - the local wild game in particular. For under $15 we had eggs, hash browns, buttermilk biscuits, 2 coffees, and a smoked buffalo sausage + a spicy elk sausage and jalapeno omelet. Delish. I am quite certain that someone (maybe the chef? the owner?) hunted that elk and that buffalo up in the mountains overlooking the Cowboy Cafe. The Cowboy Cafe serves up natural free range meat (ethical, hormone/antibiotic free) without the pretense that often surrounds it at trendy, big city restaurants. In addition, it's a nice way to support a small local business and go for total emersion - when in Wyoming eat like the Wyomingites do! Neat place that I would definitely recommend to friends/family.

On a drive outside of the Jackson Hole area of Wyoming we found this place. Dubois (pronounced with the s because the people here didn't want it to sound French) is a pretty small town as most of them along this part of 26/287 are. Not too many food choices here, but I'm glad we stumbled upon this little gem. It had that look from the outside that it should be good. Sometimes you get that feeling from a place when you walk inside. I had that feeling as soon as I stepped foot in here. The place was packed as it was around breakfast time. The food coming out of the kitchen looked pretty good. I had the elk sausage which was spiced with jalapenos. That came with eggs and a side of toast and hash browns. As you can see from the picture, it was a good amount of food. My friend went with the chicken fried steak. It was huge. The amount of food you get and the prices they charge are very good. They did advertise homemade pies and I am definitely a pie fan, but we went without. If I ever find myself back in this part of the country, I will be sure to try the pie.

Food: 3/5 Service: 5/5 Atmosphere: 4/5 Great little diner on the main drag, always full of locals. Food is typical diner fare with a couple daily specials. They have a large assortment of homemade pies which are delicious. The apple caramel crumble and blueberry pies were some of the best I've ever had. The Bubba is a steal - for under 10 bucks you get a cheeseburger, fries and slice of pie with a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream. What makes this place special though is the hospitality, especially when Matthew is working. Really makes you feel like you're one of the locals. For a better (and housemade) burger try next door at the Rustic Pine.
(4)Rich R.
Had lunch there today while passing thru town. A very cute, quaint place with good food. The burger I got looked like a Bubba burger, but it was tasty. They have about 20 different flavor pies. I had a special Rubarb custard pie that was awesome. Excellent service, a few kids bussing tables and getting drinks, hey probably family that is helping out for spending money. We loved it and wish we had one like it in NJ.

This is the place to eat in Dubois if you want good food, fast. Dubois can be a busy place in the summers, and there are few restaurants. The Cowboy is small but efficient. They know how to get people their food while it is hot, and it is always good. Service is hit and miss. I have been here and had some of the best service I have ever had, and other times it seemed our server couldn't remember what she was going to do the minutes she turned. A lot of locals eat here, which is a good sign that it is the place to go. Be prepared to maybe share a table with another group. Serve yourself water, set up your silverware, and grab your own napkins. But after the meal, you better get a slice of pie. That is the unique aspect of the Cowboy, amazingly delicious home-made pies. Get a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on that piece too.
(4)Bret M.
Large portions and fairly good food. I enjoyed the Buffalo Chili Dog with CrossTrax (cross-cut) fries. Lots of options and you'll find the staff extremely friendly!
(4)Kathy B.
Loved this place in this tiny town...had super fresh baked tasty pies! Also homemade soups. I forget now which type of soup I had but it was super good but the rhubarb/strawberry pie was to die for. Very good service, just a down home type of place! Would return anytime!
(5)Danae S.
A young child took our drink order...he couldn't have been over 8 years old. Any child labor laws in Wyoming? The food was good but as we were leaving the child was serving ice cream and was pushing the ice cream/pie back onto the plate with his non-gloved fingers.

After reading all the positive reviews about the Cowboy Cafe in Dubois, WY, we just had to try it. The waitress was very friendly. I ordered the J&J Burger (Jack Cheese and Jalapenos) and my boyfriend ordered the Buffalo Burger which they were out of so he went went a Cajun Burger. The patties on both burgers were obviously commercial, frozen patties from Costco or some other low end provider. They were tasteless and very disappointing. The fries, however, were quite good, hot and yummy and looked and tasted fresh. The pink lemonade was really good as well. Overall, the burger was horrible but the service and other food items pretty good. Not sure I'd go back! Certainly doesn't live up to all the raves on Yelp.
(3)Roy B.
Great authentic atmosphere. Service was excellent. Liked the local ale beer (titon). Buffalo burger and rib eye steak were great. So was the home made soup. Pies are wonderful. Baked across the street daily. We usually share a dessert but this time we took a few... Overall, wonderful experience in mid-land Wyoming.
(4)JaKelly V.
Previous yelpers are so right!!! Loved the food and atmosphere and met great people, both locals and fellow travelers. Little pricy but normal for the area.
(4)Greg L.
Great dinner at reasonable prices. All in my party of five were happy. Large portions but just enough room for dessert. The large slice of pie with giant scoop of ice cream finished the meal perfectly.
(4)Rebecca H.
The cowboy cafe was a staple of my younger days when I lived in Dubois, and I am so glad to say that the quality has only improved. We had dinner there the first night in town, and the burger and fries was GREAT! Perfectly cooked burger, the fries were super tasty and sitting outside was fun. I highly recommend this joint!
(4)Dawn M.
Best breakfast I've had in two weeks traveling around the Midwest. Marvelous service and nice small town atmosphere. So glad we stopped here.
(5)Tara R.
Stopped here on the way to Jackson Hole and stopped in again on our way out. Food was fantastic. Burgers are juicy and big. Fries are crisp and delicious. Had the Chicken and dumpling soup....hmm, emm..so good. Hit the spot on a cold night. Also had the hot roast beef sandwich, gravy and taters...outstanding home cooked food. Must have: try one one of their flavored lemonades!!!
(5)Rita K.
I enjoyed a great meal at the Cowboy Cafe. I had an awesome burger patty topped with cheese and jalapenos; served with veggies and a baked potato. My husband had a buffalo burger, which he liked very much. The Cowboy Cafe is known for their pie, which was great (have the cherry pie). They had a good selection of beers: a couple of local brews and the usual light beer one expects. Service was friendly and helpful. I would definitely go back there again if I'm ever in Dubois.
(4)Chuck L.
We just happened by this little treasure. They have great food, good prices and terrific desserts. The Cowboy Cafe is in the small town of Dubois and is obviously a very popular spot for both locals and tourists. It is a small place, with a few tables outside on the sidewalk. During peak mealtimes, you might have to wait a few minutes for a place to sit. My wife had the cheeseburger and fries (very good with what tasted like a home made bun). I had a steak, which was terrific! The service was excellent too. This is a "must stop" if you visit Dubois.
(4)JP B.
Had the most delicious lunch here! There aren't a lot of restaurants in Dubois, and this one doesn't have a lot of seating. We sat outside, enjoyed the fresh air and nice, big lunch portions. Kids loved the sweet potato fries (they were good, I sneaked a few!). Friendly waitstaff, just a nice place to eat.
(5)Mark S.
Great sandwiches! For being in the middle of Wyoming in a small town the food was up-to-date, fresh and great. Definitely worth a return trip.
(4)Sara G.
We stumbled upon this home-style gem during a cross country trip, and after a stop into the gallery across the street enjoyed a burger and chicken before diving into better-than-grandma's, explitive inducing desserts. We had great peach cobler and ... bread pudding with whiskey sauce (the real stuff) and it was the best I've ever had... People were super nice, staff was saucy and sweet and we enjoyed sipping local beer and chatting with friendly locals, while taking it all in.
(3)Desa D.
I must say this place was amazing! Its a little mom and pop type place that got passed down to the kids. The menu is incredibly diverse and I wanted a little of everything. Other reviews say save room for dessert and they aren't kidding! Bread pudding is an angels chorus! So is the cranberry apple raspberry pie alamode. There was a bit of a wait so of you're in a hurry go across the street. The wait is worth it I assure you! I can't wait to come back through so I can go again!
(5)MACK L.
Great Burger, damn fine pie.
(4)Kristen F.
Ha... I can't believe this place was already listed. Crazy that I am reviewing places in WY but I lived there for 2 summers. The town of Dubois will go by if your riding through and you blink. There aren't many establishments but Cowboy Cafe is a good one. Small, and specializing in your average burgers and fried food - the state is just so pretty and it's western flare is just so fun, you can't go wrong.
