We went during a slow time to start out my review. HOWEVER, with that said it is the ONLY 4-5 start restaurant on the mountain (trust me we've tried them all). The waitress, Liz, was awesome the first night we had dinner with our 6 mo old son! The food is GREAT!! I can't assess the management since it was a slow time and I was not able to see their capabilities of really managing. Freddy, one of the Chef's, is incredible and will wait tables if necessary. We had the seared tuna crostini, fried calamari, sauteed mussels, Halibut, Cumin hibachi, Shrimp & Scallop Linguini and their lava cake. It was DELICIOUS! I wished that they made an Aioli with their calamari though in addition to the marinara sauce. We also went down there every night for a night cap and the bar staff was mostly great. There was a girl that was a one off that couldn't work the computer to save her life (I guess I'd give her a 1 star since it took her forever to type things in but she wouldn't serve us our drinks until she did - 10 min later). Again, we went during a down time. During busy season I can see them probably having the same type of customer service as other places during busy times.

Two hours for dinner. The food was hot is the best I can say about it. Gorgonzola salad had almost no cheese. Avocado wasn't ripe which means it was hard. Steak on the salad wasn't seasoned properly. Gnocchi from a bag with an overly thick cream sauce. This is one to skip.

Can't really comment on the food or service, and that's kind of the point. We made reservations via OpenTable for this place on a Tuesday night. Unfortunately, we called and confirmed our reservation a few days beforehand but when we showed up that evening the restaurant was closed. They didn't bother to call us or send us an email to let us know they would be closed, so basically our dinner plans for the night were ruined. Again, this is beyond unprofessional and I would recommend going somewhere else when on vacation at Snowshoe.

The food was excellent. We especially enjoyed the duck wontons appetizer. One of the best parts about this restaurant is that it takes reservations. We arrived on-time and were seated immediately. Despite it being one of the busiest weekends of the year the service was very good. We may come back tomorrow night!

Excellent. Was surprised at the quality of the food for a Snowshoe establishment. I had the lamb and the meat was of good quality, the sauce was good but a little salty for my taste. The veggie was cooked al dente, perfect! Others at the table had the roughy and they loved it. The rib eye was tasty as well. The mountain chopped salad was fresh and tasty. All so good. We are defiantly coming back. John our waiter served us well and had a nice suggestion for a glass of wine.

We came in on the last night before the summer season was closed. You could tell they weren't expecting any business whatsoever. When we arrived, the bar was pretty full and our server was running around due to having a good number of tables. Once she arrived, she was awesome! I felt bad for her (being a server myself, I definitely know how it feels). Loved the set up and decor of this place! Appetizers were amazing(stuffed mushrooms and pierogies)!! The stuffed mushrooms were the BEST I've ever had!!! My friend got an enormous steak salad which look so good. I got the crabcake with shrimp. Again, it was one of the best crabcakes I've ever had!!! Everyone was very pleased with their meals! We all highly recommend this restaurant and will be back if ever in the area!!

The South Mountain Grille is a brand new American classic restaurant that opened up on the footprint previously occupied by Embers, which very unfortunately closed down in April 2011 when Snowshoe's Master restauranteur, Brian Ball, made a gracious exit to greener pastures in Europe and closed down both restaurants that bore his imprimatur. The South Mountain Grille, however, has maintained impeccable standards of service and quality. It stands as one of the only two restaurants on the huge and sprawling resort that takes reservations, making it a heavenly addition to the community's repertoire, especially during high-traffic weekends that can sometimes see fifteen thousand people on top of the mountain. The manager, Chad, is a former Ball employee and is extremely well trained, thankfully maintaining very high standards. And the Maitre D', the shift chiefs and the hostesses are by and large former Embers employees. Thank the good Lord..... We went in with reservations on opening weekend and it was obvious the employees were well trained. We were seated on the spot and had one particularly expert waiter at our beck and call. Our evening faire started with appetizers of korean barbecue satay trio of beef, chicken & shrimp, crabcakes with creole mustard sauce, and mozzarella risotto balls in roasted tomato sauce. All three were outstanding. For the Pièce de résistance, we ordered the ginger wok shrimp white onion, snap peas, baby bok choy over jasmine rice, the roasted half chicken rosemary honey glazed with mashed blue potatoes & asparagus, and the clam & mussel linguini garlic lemon wine sauce & parmesan cheese. All were outstanding. And a bottle of Malbec to go with the selections. It's nice to see that there is life at Snowshoe after Embers. We all miss it. But still, the former employees who are forging ahead with a new venture in the culinary arts are doing a great job. We shall return....

Did some research for dinner one night of my family's brief Christmas vacation and settled on this place based on previous positive reviews and the menu. I'll start by saying that the food should get a solid 4/5 stars and that my serious qualms were with the management and service. What was cooked properly (5 or 6 of 7 dishes) was very tasty. Quail & Scallops was a BIG winner. The Risotto balls and Duck Rangoon were great. Fennel and Beet salad was sooo good. The filet was tasty but the twice baked potato was stone cold on the inside (see below). So, several serious complaints to voice: - I had a 7:30 reservation for 4. We arrived early at 7:22, well aware of that, and were told that bussers were clearing both of our tables and we'd be ready very shortly (with one 4-top ahead of us in the lobby, too). At 7:44 we were approached asking if a high-top would be ok. We said yes! Were happy to be seated promptly and took our places. - COMPLAINT: a reservation should never ever be sat outside of 10 minutes of their reservation time. 16 minutes after a reservation time after being bullshi**ed for a solid 24 minutes is unacceptable. - We sat down at 7:46 and were not greeted by our server until 8:02. He asked if we wanted to start out with some drinks and filled our water glasses. I asked for a ginger beer and vodka with a splash of lime juice (a Moscow Mule). He was thrown by this that we were later informed after the bartender came over to get us drinks that it had taken so long because he didn't know how to ring in what I had ordered. We were very very thankful for Randi, the bartendress, who came over to help us. - COMPLAINT: a table should always be greeted within 5 minutes of being seated. we were not even acknowledged by our server until 15 minutes. - COMPLAINT: a customer should never be felt to made like he or she is to blame for not getting a drink in time. hearing that i was the reason he couldn't figure out how to ring in a drink was a total bullsh** reason for not getting an initial drink order out promptly. vodka, ginger beer, splash of lime juice especially when clearly explained is not hard. - We ordered two apps with our initial drink order. At this point we learned that it was our server's first day (fine, we've all been there before, everyone in my family included, so certain things can be excused). The Risotto balls and the Duck Rangoon. They both were tasty, the risotto balls a little under-temp (possibly because we were yapping with one of the staff and the food runner/expo wouldn't interrupt to drop food). The tasty risotto balls were delivered, confirmation was given that the other app was on its way, and it wasn't until the bartender came back to ask if we wanted drinks that we expressed our duck app wasn't there and she promptly put one in on fly. - COMPLAINT: all apps should be put in at the same time. servers forget (I have too!!), but someone should be watching a trainee on his first day. it is unacceptable to put a trainee on tables on his first day. - COMPLAINT: when the food runner/expo gives a verbal "yes" to my "was the duck rangoon on the app ticket?", the bartender 5 minutes later should not have to put in an app on the fly. seems like the expo/food runner had lied to us directly instead of apologizing and fixing it - there is no excuse for that. - COMPLAINT: if the duck app had in fact been on the ticket in the first place then there is no excuse for the apps coming 15 minutes apart. that is the sign of a bad expo. she was later rightly harangued by a server within earshot saying that a salad with "as an entree" on the ticket CANNOT go out before the other entrees on the same ticket. piss poor expo job. - Twice baked potato was awfully similar to a Sysco product I'm familiar with and was served stone cold on the inside. This was fixed by putting a new potato on the plate and nuking the whole plate (filet, spinach, and all, cooking the filet even further). Also, one of the four duck rangoons was also cold on the inside. The other duck rangoons were hot out of the fryer, there is no excuse that all four should not have been cooked the same. - COMPLAINT: Food coming out from the line to the closest table to the expo should never be cold. Food coming out of a kitchen should never be cold. Food that may even be frozen from the Southeast's largest food distributor should not be served cold. - Our waiter in-training dropped the check at the table at the appropriate time. It didn't include our drinks (which at this point we assumed had been comp'ed given how often the very very kind mgr Vita came to our table to apologize). He returned our card without a pen. - COMPLAINT: don't drop a bill to sign without a pen. Annoying. Lots of work to be done in management and training. This was obvious to a family with their own casual, fine dining restaurant. Make sure you get one of the seasoned waitstaff. Will def return and hope for better!

Service was good, and most entrees we got were very good. The burger that was ordered medium-rare came out well done, though it still tasted decent.

They ran out of wings before 6:00 on a Saturday, and the restaurant wasn't even busy at the time. Later, they told us that they ran out of lava cake that I was so eager to eat. So disappointing. Who manages inventory so ineffectively knowing that this was going to be such a busy weekend (Cuervo winter games)? The good things? We ordered the bruchetta which was fantastic. The toppings were placed in a separate ramekin instead of directly on the crostini which I appreciate. Our bartender was fun and her enthusiastic recommendation for the crabcakes were spot on. Overall, I don't think this place is going to last much longer. As mentioned, this was supposed to be a touristy weekend, but it wasn't very busy. Also, it seemed poorly managed (running out of food, etc.). Plus, we asked a few people when the band was supposed to start, but nobody seemed to know. Then, the band started so late and by that time most people had left. Shouldn't the entertainment be timed to keep the dining crowd in?

By far the nicest and classiest restaurant on the mountain. Its a few minutes up from the village, but worth the drive. It has a great atmosphere and great customer service. We shared the risotto mozzarella balls, which we describe as "fancy" fried mozzarella sticks, but were delicious. They had a well rounded wine list for something of every taste and budget. For entrees, we had the sea bass and the NY strip. Both were great, but you could get comparable food for a lower price if not for the resort setting. We had the creme-brullee for dessert, which was underwhelming.

Being a party of 20 folks, the managers or chef never came out to see how our food was. We spent several hundred dollars and they did not ONCE check in on us. I was shocked at the food quality--our party came down with food poisoning, had to have the food sent back for recooking, and one person had a ribeye that was over 50% FAT. ***PURE wobbly, glutinous, gelatinous, white, jelly-fish-looking, termite-queen-looking, see it wiggle, watch it jiggle, 8 ounces of pure COW FAT!!!*** They even ran out of certain beers on tap--because the staff dropped the keg. Really? The star goes to the server-lady with dread locks. She was really on top of it and had to profusely apologize for the lack of drinks and quality of food. Someone give her a raise or bonus or something. At least a doobie after that night of being surrounded by incompetence.

While staying at the Soaring Eagle Lodge in January 2013, my wife and I had gone down to the restaurant/bar on our first night of arrival. Since we were not very hungry we sat at the bar and ordered drinks and a few items off the appetizer list. Service was great and the food was outstanding. It was sooo good that we frequented the place the other two nights we were there. This is a great place to relax after a day of skiing. It's also a nice change from the "typical" resaurant on the mountain. Everything on the appetizer menu was really good. Another aspect that made our time here worthwhile was Jason the bartender. He treated us and other patrons very well. When we make it back to Snowshoe we will definitely be coming back.

Best place on the mountain, we have tried them all. Filet was perfect, the halibut was amazing. Freddy, our waiter, was a rock star. If you're tired of the mediocre choices in the village, the shuttle ride to South Mountain Grille is definitely worth it!

We recently visited South Mountain Grille with a large party. We will not be back. The experience seemed like a fly-by-night operation. Even the menus were from the previous establishment, Ember, but covered up with a cheap South Mountain Grille sticker. One filet came rare, after being sent back, was returned rare. A Ribeye was at least 50% fat - pure fat. The chicken was way overdone. Entrees were delivered 10 minutes apart. They ran out of bread. And one person who had the halibut was vomiting in the middle of the night. Could be that it was just the flu? On the bright side, the waitstaff was ok, except that they should have involved the manager and much of this meal should have been comped. On the way out, a server was overheard apologizing to a table of four because there was only one sweet potato left.
