I love Thai and this was a let down. I went here and ordered the pad thai with thai iced tea. And this was the first time I was unimpressed with the pad thai and the thai iced tea was barely delicious. I was internally upset, though the waitress I had was lovely. But my thai iced tea tasted like lightly flavored sweet tea with cream color. The pad thai itself was more on spice and cheap on flavor. Every time I pass Kazu, I think how underwhelmed I was and shake my head and give my business elsewhere. There is better Thai to be had and this was not it.

Qu'elle surprise! Didn't expect much from a Japanese/Thai restaurant in Shepherdtowns, West Virginia. And on a Tuesday night there wasn't much open on the historic downtown. My wife and I were so surprised and delighted with the meal. My wife had panang curry with vegetables, our server recommended having the vegetables in the curry. She was very happy with the curry, even better than our local place in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. I had the Japanese lunch box (Bento box) as a dinner with chicken teriyaki as the major item. It was served with miso soup, three pieces of California roll, a salad of greens with tofu and a wonderful dressing, teriyaki, rice, and to top it all off, several pieces of tempura (including two large shrimp). Yes, it is a lot and it was all good, very good. We had no wait at all on a Tuesday night at 630, and the service was fast and courteous. A definite winner in Shepherdstown, should you be wanting Thai or Japanese food.

This restaurant has a lot of room for improvement. When we came in the room temperature was very warm, then by the end of the meal it was so cold we were freezing! The generic elevator music was not appealing either. There were about 8 other people in the restaurant besides the 6 in our party (not busy). The food took forever, and everyone at our table got their food at a different time. 5 of us were 50-75% done with our meals before the 6th person even received his food. When his food finally came they had gotten his order wrong! The sushi was ok, not the best or worst I've ever had. The seaweed salad was good, but nowhere near as good as the one you can get in Charles Town's 9 Dragons restaurant. We're not going to be back.

It was ok. Service was good but lunch with a pot of hot green tea and two appetizers and entrees came to over 50 bucks before tip! Wow. The crispy duck was amazing but the Green curry chicken was so sad...it had just a few thin pieces of chicken in it and hardly any veggies. Thank goodness at least we were sharing. The food was disappointing for the price tag, especially for lunch. I used to work in metro center in dc and used to get Thai all the time for lunch and it was so much cheaper and better! Thanks to the sticker shock we decided to go to aldi an make our own gourmet meals for the rest of our trip :p

Great Thai Food find in Shepardstown! We got the pad Thai & Drunken noodles after a long day of hiking near Harper's Ferry. The wait was pretty long, but they were good with the drink refills and the appetizers. When we got our food, it was definitely more than I could eat! One plate of noodles could have fed me for 3 meals.... As far as authenticity, it was pretty spot on. Not bad for a Thai place that is not in a large city. However, it is in a college town so that might have something to do with it. They also had my favorite Thai Restaurant dessert, Mango Sticky Rice!!!! OMG....their version was amazing and beautifully presented. So beautiful that we stuffed our faces with it. Next time.....we'll give the Japanese Menu a try.

Get the green beans in garlic saice. Just get it. So yum! The Wasabi was fresh. Ie. REALLY NASAL CLENSING!
(5)Meg K.
We really enjoyed our dinner here. The sushi was fresh and tasty. I highly recommend the crab puff - I don't know what's in it but I think it's an Asian twist on the Maryland crab cake, the sauce is a standout. Very friendly service.
(4)Yasmin A.
My first time there I got the fried rice, I wasn't expecting much but it's literally the best fried rice I've had! They have a wide selection of food. I everything I've tried from seaweed sushi to yellow curry has been delishhh

By far the best Asian cuisine in Shepherdstown. Kazu is a Thai/Japanese restaurant located in downtown Shepherdstown. Have been here on 5 occasions now and have yet to be disappointed. If I'm there for lunch I typically go with the teriyaki lunch box that comes with a sashimi appetizer. If I'm there for dinner I always get the drunken noodles. The drunken noodles are sweet and spicy and have yet to let me down. They come with a chicken, pork, or shrimp option. I also typically get sushi when I'm there and have not had anything that I didn't like. They have a small drink selection, could be much larger but not terrible for such a small place. I would recommend this to anyone looking for Thai and Japanese in the area. My only complaint is I feel like the price is a little steep, but not unreasonable.
(4)Samuel F.
Tasty food, but a lot of it is way overpriced for such small portions. I love coconut soup unconditionally, and they have it here. You probably get more chicken in the $5 soup than you do in the $15 chicken curry entree. Their crispy duck with basil is awesome, and is probably the best value on the menu, unfortunately it is the most expensive thing on the menu.

Always good! Pad Thai is the best we've had. Do NOT order above 5 out of 10 on hotness scale!! Fire Department will be summoned!
(5)Zenmaster S.
Love the pad Thai and fried rice but, the last few times I've been there or had take out it has been dry. They have great friendly servers but in house they're slow or missing when I'm trying to get a refill or the check.
(3)Katie W.
I love the Thai tea and drunken noodles, but the sushi is fresh and great too. I have enjoyed the bento boxes and the teriyaki chicken. Service can be slow sometimes and the wait can be long, but delicious!

5 of us decided to eat here one chilly November night, and we were not disappointed. The food was great, the service was top notch, and the price was very, very reasonable. I had the panang curry with tofu, a saucy meal that was spiced just right, had a nice amount of vegetables, and contained tofu cooked to perfection. The fried spring rolls came with a tasty dipping sauce. Nice beer selection. Good ambiance. I've rarely encountered such friendly and professional service, anywhere, at any price.

I really wanted to eat here today but after waiting to get set for 15 mins and watching 3 waiters chat I decided to take my business els where.

I haven't lived in Shepherdstown in over two years. When I speak about Shepherdstown cuisine, kazu is the first restaurant I rave about. Not only do I live in an area with multiple thai restaurants ( northern va), I have also worked at Kazu many moons ago; I can still say they remain at the top of my favorite thai restaurants. I will drive the hour just to devour their fresh sushi and specifically- the crispy shrimp with basil. While the prices may seem high, it's worth the quality of the food. If you want cheap food- go to a cheaper quality restaurant. The thai tea is great, the panang curry, all of the sushi, the crispy shrimp- it's all great with lots of flavor. Not sure how this place has bad reviews because I personally think it's a top notch thai restaurant. If you're in the area- check it out.

We moved to Shepherdstown earlier this year and have been trying the various restaurants. So far this is the only place I would avoid. We got Thai so I can't speak to the Japanese fare. The decor is pleasant and they have a good location, but... Really, really overpriced for ridiculously small servings of mediocre food. I was very surprised it wasn't better for the DC-level prices we were charged. Either the portions should be doubled, the quality seriously improved or the prices lowered. I love Thai (and Japanese) food, but I'm passing on this place.

My favorite place to eat in Shepherdstown. A lengthier wait for sit-down, but worth it. If you have 30 bucks to blow, GET THE BASIL DUCK. I strongly dislike duck, but this is perfection. In addition, I constantly compare all shrimp pad Thai I eat to Kazu Thai.. I love the lemongrass soup, the spring rolls and spicy vinegar dipping sauce are fantastic, sushi is small but delish.. I have yet to be disappointed with any food I have eaten there. I had a Japanese bento box there once and loved that too, especially for the lunch price. Dinner meals are anywhere from 11 to 30.00 per entree. Service is slow-paced, but the staff is courteous, on top of things, cleanly-dressed and expedient where they can be. It is a small hole-in-the-wall, but one of my favorites. The only other place I would eat in town itself is Mellow Moods, for their

Mediocre food. Terrible service. I had the exact same experience 4 years apart. My wife and I tried this place 4 years ago when we first moved to the area. Last night we tried again with identical results. Both times the service was extremely slow and inattentive. We sat for almost 10 minutes before seeing a waiter, our drinks were never refilled, we waited forever for our bill - which we eventually asked the hostess to bring us. It was almost 3 hours from being seated to receiving a bill. The food was about what you would expect at any mediocre strip mall Thai place / Teriyaki joint. Perhaps half a notch better than stuff in the food court at a mall. I won't be going back.
(2)Michael B.
Probably 3 stars anywhere else but for Shepherdstown a 4. Sushi is good, but the rolls are alittle small.
(4)Susan H.
Americanized to the point of blandness. Limited sushi menu. Clean, fast service.
(2)Kim M.
My friend was very specific about no shrimp in her tempura, but, she got shrimp anyway. It was difficult to tell it was a shrimp so she took a bite. Fortunately she is not allergic, she just doesn't like shrimp. But when we mentioned it to the server, and pointed out that carelessless like this could cause someone to become very ill - or dead - she was pretty much indifferent. We will skip this place in the future.
(1)Aleta M.
Great food. Pad Thai was wonderful and their crab ball appetizer is amazing.

I'm wondering if we caught this place on an off night. First off, everyone on here is mentioning the attentive service, well ours was awful. We sat with our menus and no drinks for at least 10 minutes before someone stopped by and said they told our waitress we'd been waiting for a while and to stop by. Finally, she did. When we attempted to order some sushi she said "Well, I hope you're okay with waiting a while." When we asked for more info, she said the sushi counter was backed up and it would probably take at least an hour to get anything from there. Yes it was busy at dinner time, but shouldn't a restaurant staff for that? In any case, we ordered from the Thai side of the menu. Wish she would have warned us that would take a while too, because we might have just gone for the sushi. We started with the shumai, which did arrive in a timely fashion. The dumplings seemed to be handmade, and were tasty, if nothing super special. Then it was time to wait. And wait. And wait. No would you like another beer? No stops by other than to wordlessly refill our waters. When our food arrived it was good, again nothing super special, but good for the only game in town. The boyfriend got curry with chicken, which was flavorful and with a nice consistency to the sauce. I got pad see ew with tofu, which was also flavorful and served with a nice selection of veggies. Note: the tofu here is sauteed, not fried as some Thai places do. Again service just lagged, though: no one ever stopped to check on how our meals were or see if we wanted more drinks, instead one server repeatedly bumped into both my boyfriend and I, at one point almost knocking the menu out of my hands. We were in a bit of a hurry as we were supposed to meet some friends after a rehearsal dinner, and it took 10-15 minutes of us being done with our napkins in plain sight on the table for anyone to come by and ask if we were finished. We saw our waitress walk by and help other tables several times, but she continued to ignore us. So, in all, I'd say go to Kazu if you're stuck in She-town and you really want Thai since it's the only game in town... but don't come in a hurry!
(2)Shirley N.
If the waiter had been more attentive, I would have said four stars. We had reservations but had to wait a few minutes to be seated. Once we were seated we waited *at least* fifteen minutes before the waiter even stopped to introduce himself. We were able to order our drinks and food at this time, since we had ample time to review the menu. The food came rather quickly. Someone else refilled our drinks, the waiter came back once, that was near the end of our meal. It took another 10-15 minutes for him to come back with our checks. The food was great. It was my first time trying Thai. I had pad thai with tofu. My friend had ginger chicken which she said needed more ginger. The others in enjoyed their items, though I can't recall what they had. I'd definitely go back, because the food was good - just maybe on a night that isn't busy (we were there on a Saturday around 7)
(3)Joli H.
The food was average, at best. Bland curry, overly hot (yet otherwise flavorless) shrimp fried rice and the sushi...cold rice, warm fish, not good. Besides that, the server was pretencious (obviously uncalled for) and just plain rude. It may be the only Thai restaurant in the area, but I would make the trip out of town to get better food.
(1)K C.
I reluctantly give this place 4 stars. The food is pretty good, worthy of 4 stars, but I question the value. The menu is way over-priced. If you are a "value shopper," this place is a solid 3 stars.
(4)Mike P.
Eh, nothing special. Worth checking out if you happen to be in the area and have a craving for Thai food. Coconut soup was decent, prices reasonable, pad thai and drunkken noodles were so-so. Drive to Frederick, much better Thai at several places there. Oh, the service was noticably S.L.O.W...
(3)Janet P.
I went here for the first time a few weeks ago, the place was empty when two of us had arrived during lunch hours. The music was a eclectic mix of international tunes and the menu seemed to be a mix of Asian cuisine. Both of us ordered the made-to-order pad Thai, both were good, mine was nice and mild, and my friends was nice and spicy. Our waiter was very informative and he told us everything is made fresh with the exception of 99% of there deserts, so one of deserts was on the house since it was super frozen but he did warn us before hand. I will definitely be back again to try the sushi!
(4)Rob H.
I've loved this Thai jewel for years. Food is excellent. service is too. Decor is not so much. Small town fun at it's best. Worth the drive from NVa
(4)Val F.
Great food and service. We eat here often and the drunken noodles are tremendous. Cozy atmosphere and solid service.
(4)Andrea A.
Order the crispy duck. It is the most awesome ever. Service not perfect, sometimes very slow, but friendly, and it's noisy, but the cookin' is wonderful.

I am from DC, with a weekend house in Martinsburg, and I have sampled most of the Thai restaurants in the District. No question that the service is not lightening fast, but it is friendly. In the winter, dress in layers, because it can be drafty. But my partner and I -- and he lived overseas for many years, including Thailand -- find this the tastiest Thai restaurant around. This weekend I had the yellow curry, with was one of the nicest, most complex currie dishes I have ever had. He had a rice dish that was a tad greasier than he prefers, but he has a real thing about no oil at all in fried rice dish. He still devoured most of his, and I ate the rest. The prices are "DC," but we find the quality of the food to match anything we can get in the District. We have eaten at the fancy dress restaurants in Shepherdstown that try to mimic DC in style; they get much of the look down, but their food is a pale immitation. Any more, when we go out to eat, Kazu is one of about 3 places we head to. Note: we are both vegetarians, and, as usual for Thai restraurants, Kazu is vegetarian friendly.

I'm a well traveled lover of all Asian cuisine, especially Thai. If I had one suggestion for this place, is to give up the Japanese part and focus on thai. Especially since there is a Japanese restaurant across the street. Being that it is the only thai restaurant for many miles, it just completely fails. Though I do not know if that is truly a reflection of the owner or chef as it may be more of a reflection of the area. I tried this place several times and was just disappointed. The service was ok, but the thai flavors were very lacking. Like I said, more than likely an issue of the area and bending the flavor/spice to get business than the cook... and probably why they also keep some Japanese items. Just as much as many of the Japanese restaurants in the area have Chinese items. For a true thai food experience, this place is not it. Things were a bit pricey, but what isn't in Shep...
(2)Mike R.
Try the drunken noodles with pork. Very good.
(4)Soja-Marie M.
If you have a craving for sushi or pad thai go here. The food is not creative but its good if a bit overpriced. Great place for a long time no see or date night.
(4)Elise O.
delicious pad thai--I love the heaping pile of crushed peanuts they put on top. you may want to ask them to add spice, they do not normally make it spicy but will cook to your specifications. the sushi is the best around. fresh and delicious. the steak is not something you would usually try at a thai/japanese place but it is AMAZING. you will wake up in the middle of the night craving it. the duck is also good and the crispy shrimp is stellar. i love everything i get here. the prices may be a little bit high but i'm never dissappointed.
(4)Jim A.
My wife, several friends, and I absolutely love this restaurant. Everything we have ordered here has been delicious and very high quality, all at very acceptable prices. If you like it spicy (and I do!), they can make your scalp steam. If you like it more mild, they can dial it right back to where you like it. Though it does get quite busy and can slow down a bit, the service is generally very friendly and quick. They have an adequate selections of beer and wine to complement their foods and the atmosphere is always charged with the feeling that everyone is acquainted with one another. Combined with the beautiful setting of Shepherdstown, this is a fantastic date location or place to gather with friends.
(5)Reina N.
Wish they had more vegan option as most Japanese Thai Cuisine places do. Otherwise pretty decent foods.
(3)Dean L.
Grrrreat

While visiting Shepardstown, my friend Lori and I asked the sales person at Devonshire where she would eat and she suggested Kazu. We never ignore a tip from a local...so we stopped in. It was great. We had the world's tallest waiter and yummy dishes. It may not look as fancy as The Press Room or Stone Soup...but overlook the flash if you are in the mood for great Thai or Japanese cuisine
(4)Will A.
Kazu is one of the only thai restaurants left in the eastern panhandle of WV and they don't seem to be letting that go to their head! Excellent thai food, correctly spiced, and fairly priced. Expect to wait for a table on Friday and Saturday night but other nights of the week you can easily be sat as soon as you walk in. I am also a bit of a sushi "snob" and this is one of the few places outside DC that I will eat sushi.
(5)Diana C.
huge fan of shrimp pad thai here. love the gyoza and they have good sushi. the only bad thing i have ever had here was a batch of dry and slightly overcooked pad thai but maybe it was a bad night. also had some really greasy lemongrass soup that i didn't care for, but other than that i continue to crave the pad thai. i have ordered the drunken noodles that were both spicy, sweet, and tasty. this place is a fave of mine in the area. sometimes the service is lousy though.
(4)Andrew W.
I have eaten at Kazu twice. The first time in a group of 4 - we started with sushi (fresh and excellent, although the selection is limited) and then went on to main dishes. The group had crispy duck, Pad See Yu with shrimp, a veggie dish and something else. All excellent. Service was a bit slow but that was great we were in no rush. Went back last night we had Japanese Udon noodle soup (small portion with only one tempura shrimp) but also the spicy fried shrimp and the pad see eu with srhimp again. I have never had a dish with so many huge fresh shrimp cooked to perfection (not overcooked) and absolutely scrumptious. And service this time was quick. You cannot lose if you order off the specials menu. I would give 4 1/2 stars (because frankly its not perfect and it is not cheap) but it is definitely one of the 2 best places in Shepherdstown.
(5)Jim B.
Try anything with Basil. If you arrive and find the dining room empty, it's OK. The service has never been great. And, it's a small town with a college student clientele that may be on break. But the food is very steady w/some very strong Thai offerings.
(4)Maureen B.
Wonderful restaurant. Great staff. I eat here as often as possible and I highly recommend the place to anyone who is looking for a great place to eat. Clean, attractive surroundings. Beautifully prepared food that is very tasty. I have friends who drive from Bethesda just to eat here .
(5)Collin F.
We started with the shrimp tempura sushi roll, and it was out of this world! For an entree, I had the pineapple duck and it was wonderful. My wife had Pad Thai, and loved it. The sticky rice was very good as well. The only downer was the house salad. I'd bet there's more flavor in a bag of grass clippings. The dressing was BLAND, and there was too much of it, so it ruined the whole salad. Service was attentive, but not over the top. I would definitely go back.
(3)Michael L.
We live in Shepherdstown and love this restaurant. We mainly order the Thai food, so cannot say much about the Japanese side. We love the crab ball appetizer, the soups, beef with basil, spicy shrimp, and pad thai. My sister-in-law comes out specially from DC for this restaurant and has the spicy duck, which she says is the best in the area! I have been to many a Thai restaurant in the States and overseas and this is one of the best. Highly recommended.
