Cool vibe, relaxed oasis. Had the steak with mashed and green beans. Steak (arrives sliced) was very good as were the accompaniments. Drawbacks were inattentive, yet nice, service and dinner served on a cold plate. Heat up the plate and the meal stays hot and inviting, especially after waiting a long while. Would like to come back and sample the other fares including appetizers and drinks.

Best vegetables I've ever had. This is a new place in town, replacing an English place, which was pretty good. The decor is well done, artsy without pretense. The staff is friendly but professional. The prices are very good and overall the tone is sedate, thank God. You can actually engage in conversation with the person at your table without shouting. As to the food, as I said, the vegetables are the best I've ever had. It was that good. Fresh and cooked correctly. Very good. I ordered the pork chop, which was enormous but not cooked to my liking, just a tad tiny bit too white - bordering on pink. But that is largely a matter of preference. Overall, Domestic is very good and we'll be back.

strangest white pizza was deep dish and dropped bag shredded cheese on burnt crust. with caramelized onion could only eat too tiny slices. the Cosmo was good though

Bring your dog! They immediately accommodated with water and treats. Morgantown scotch ale had tons of flavor without overpowering. Fish & chips were magnificent!

Clean, casual, yet nice atmosphere. Loved my pizza w strawberries and onions! Everyone in our group enjoyed their meals. Live music was very nice

It's decent, wish it was more consistent. Sometimes this place will be amazing other times it's just ok.

I've dined at Domestic several times since their opening... Unfortunately after my last meal I doubt I'll return. The food is consistently under-seasoned, bland, and borders what you remember from your school cafeteria. Today, my wife ordered the Grilled Chicken Entree--it it was just that--virtually no seasoning, no sauce, and only a few faint grill marks...paired with a few pieces of bland steamed broccoli and some penne pasta coated with some kids-style mac-and-cheese sauce. This dish had been recommended by our server who couldn't have cared less we were there. Repeated attempts by other servers to have him greet us upon sitting down was followed up with poor service through the entire meal. My fish and chips were OK--but very bland and unimpressive overall. $150 for dinner for 4...There are better options in Shepherdstown.

First things first, I fell in love with this little place as soon as I walked in the door, and was not disappointed for even a moment throughout the entire evening. In a little portion of the country that is about as known for fine dining as the Florida Keys are known for cross country skiing, my expectations were low when we made the choice to have our anniversary dinner at Domestic last night. Situated in the middle of a cool little touristy college town, I figured this meal could either be way too hipster, or carefully designed to out-price the local college crowd. I was surprised at how neither one was at all true. The decor catches the eye before even entering the restaurant. The bright yellow doors immediately set this place apart from the many Shepherdstown dining options. We followed the yellow wooden gateway into some of the best hours of our life! Taking in our surroundings we sat at the bar for a cocktail questioning the super-friendly bartender about all of the art on the walls, the tables, chairs, and eclectic beautifully designed shelving and countertops that are around the restaurant. He seemed to know a little bit about everything! This, to me, is a true testament to training and enthusiasm for your profession and workplace! Oh, and the cocktails were ridiculous! So good!! After chatting it up for a bit with our mixologist we were ready to be taken to our table. The owner met us at the bar, and even carried our drinks to the table! Our waitress was there just as we sat down. She hooked us up with our water as we sat (reused wine bottles, left on the table [that she refilled for us!!!]awesome!!). She gave us a some time to get comfortable, take in the surroundings, and notice the happenings in the other room. She returned after a few short minutes and walked us through the menu, a brief history of the restaurant, and what was going on in the other room. Apparently we missed the opportunity to join the fun little wine dinner/party that was happening right beside us. Of course, we found out how to get in on the next one, and WE WILL be attending! For our appetizer we shared the brussels sprouts. These little gems were cooked to perfection! I grew up eating frozen sprouts that were mushy and flavorless. I hated them! I remember being forced to eat them, so I would stuff as many as I could in my mouth and then excuse myself to the bathroom where I would flush those little gross-pods down the toilet where they belonged!! I've come a long way since then, and have been very pleased with huge comeback they've made, and last nights were certainly no exception. The outer leaves were very crispy and the centers had the perfect amount of bite to them. They had a little spice, and a little acidity, just an amazing combination of textures and flavors, 5 out of 5!! On to the main event! My wife had the Bistro Filet. At only $19 I was a little worried that we might have to stop and get a cheeseburger on the way home, or a few desserts to bridge the hunger gap, but that was not the case at all! 8-10 ounces would be my guess for this thing! We actually packed some up and had steak and eggs this morning! It was a perfect medium-rare (just how we ordered it) and looked amazing with steam rolling off of it as it hit the table! The sauce was minimal, it seemed like it was only there to beef up those creamy mashed potatoes! Perfectly seasoned, cooked exactly how we like it- my wife was VERY happy! As for me, I had the fried chicken. How could fried chicken be bad at a restaurant that promotes a cool twist on your childhood favorites? Crisp, hot, juicy, it was everything I wanted in some southern fried chicken! I guess the standard is a white piece and a dark piece, but I requested two darks! They sent three! Go big or go home is an attitude I suppose we share when indulging in the savory goodness of my yesteryear! Biscuits, mashed potatoes! It was perfect! I will order it again and again! And if it ever comes off the menu in one of my visits, I will surely get that filet! Oh- I haven't mentioned Qupe Syrah yet! I know Domestic didn't make it, but WOW!! Great suggestion from our server! Now to our guilty pleasure. The wife and I don't like to claim our love for desserts. We usually always lie and say "we never do this!", "we never get dessert!" and we tried last night, but our charming server somehow talked us in to the bread pudding! There was no time for questions or explanations. As soon as it hit the table, it disappeared! It was so decadent and delicious it we took bites as big as our mouths could fit- and then ordered another one for the ride home, which ended up being breakfast dessert this morning. Long story short, from start to finish this place is outstanding! The doors, the decor, the staff, the ambiance, the food, the drink, it has it all! Someone spent a lot of time and love carefully and artfully pulling all of the pieces together here, and it certainly hasn't gone unnoticed.

The portions were small. Dinner for 3 including 2 beers and 1 glass of wine was over 100$ before tip.

This place is AWESOME. Not only did they have Southern Tier's Pum-king ON TAP, but they also let us bring the dog in and gave her a rawhide. Also, when we needed directions, they drew us a map. :) They had several items that could be made vegan also. Win win.

Food is okay. Very hit and miss. One day burger was amazing, flavorful, perfectly cooked and seasoned. Despite the overly salted and soggy fried greenbeans and poor service, I came back for the burger. The second time it was a small, underseasoned, overlooked patty. Even though I ordered it with lettuce, tomato, etc, it came plain. Didn't see a server for next ten minutes so ate it as was. (Understandable as there were a whopping 3 other tables sitting down.) When asked how it was I told them, and they said nothing and walked away. I paid and left. As I was leaving finally got that refill on my ice tea (which was quite good. So good, in fact, I finished it before my burger arrived...) Like Dish, staff and servers seem untrained and are completely inattentive. Dishes sounded interesting and there is potential, but I'll never be back. Too many other good restaurants in the area. We stopped going to Dish two years ago because of the service. Shame they are repeating their mistakes here. Also, I am highly skeptical of the reviews by CS and JE below (which is why I even bothered to post this one.) Sounds to me like it was written by employees of the restaurant. Hope I'm wrong. Doubt I am. Really hate leaving such a negative review, but unless something is done to improve the overall dining experience, the place won't stand a chance. 3 stars for food -2 for the service.

My husband and I dined here from Memphis, TN. We're in town doing the civil war thing and visiting the battlefields. After looking at Yelp for reviews and finding that most places were closed because it was Sunday, we started walking around and saw Domestic. It looked nice so we sat down for dinner. Our waitress was great; helpful but not over-the-top and we had our drinks quickly. I had the burger with cheddar and bacon and he had the fried catfish with grits. We inhaled our food and my burger was yummy.. seasoned perfectly. Only complaint was that it could have been a bit bigger (but maybe that was my stomach talking after a long day of hiking!). I had a bite of my husband's grits and they were delicious. He said the catfish was great. I'm sorry other people had bad experiences; out dinner was great!

Went here last night with my parents. The restaurant is really nice and has a minimalist approach in it's appearance. Not super fancy or flashy but that's definitely a good thing. I had the cheeseburger with fries and it was cooked medium. Local beef and full of flavor. Also had a wide array of beers available, and I took advantage of the Flying Dog Pale Ale they had on tap. (Doggystyle, great beer). The owner is a really nice guy and all in all, the service was good as well. If you're looking for some good food that is a little pricey (all local product though so it's worth it) but won't break your bank, this is the spot in Shepherdstown.

What a treat! Formerly The Yorkshire Pub, and before that the 3 Onions, this eclectic spot has a fresh new look. Crisp white walls make way for bright knick-knacks on a huge wooden shelving unit in the side dining room, while huge lettering signage sits atop a fully stocked bar in the main room. A new beginning in the decorations department isn't all this place has for it. The menu provides tasty selections of unusual combinations, and modern table-to-farm-type ingredients and flavors. My dining guest and I shared the fried green beans appetizer, cooked crisp to perfection, and served with a creamy cilantro aioli. My entree was the southwestern salad, sprinkled with black beans, sweet corn, seasoned tortilla chips and a cilantro ranch dressing. A fresh made-in-house "Oat" veggie burger teased my jealous taste buds from across the table, seated next to a chopped Caeser salad. One of the biggest homemade burgers I've seen, this black bean based burger was studded with roasted red peppers, lending a smoky, savory bite to this delicious burger. The chef was still working on dessert, so we didn't get to try the special sweet of the day. We were so glad to try something new and so pleased with the flavors, value, and extremely friendly atmosphere of this cute new place. Can't wait to go back!

We almost didnt try this place because of the reviews here. What a mistake that would of been. My wife & daughter asked the server if the chef would grill them some of the Blue Point oysters , which were awesome & should be featured on the menu! Nice selection of micro brews on tap. The prices for Shepherdstown were excellent. Waitress was very attentive. Will definitely be back for grilled oysters & the Draft beer from Thomas, WV. If they had booths this place would be perfect. Weve needed a place like this for a long time.

Delicious food, outstanding service! I ate here with my husband and my five year old son on a Saturday evening. I had the tarragon chicken which was absolutely delicious! Very moist and flavorful. Also, the place had a great vibe, yet was welcoming to families. We sat up front by the window. The manager gave my son sidewalk chalk and he drew outside on the sidewalk while we waited for our food and while my husband and I finished our meal. In exchange for his artwork, the manager gave my son a free piece of chocolate cake! Needless to say my son loved the restaurant, too. Would definitely go back!

When Domestic first opened its doors, while I hoped it would succeed (because we really liked its nearby sister Dish), I feared it was doomed. The retail space it occupies, you see, is cursed; NOTHING can survive there. The first year or so was rocky -- great ideas but inconsistent application, friendly but occasionally inept service, that gunshot from the upstairs apartment. Fortunately, Doug and his staff kept trying! These days, every trip to Domestic is a pleasure. We visit regularly -- every other month at least (and sometimes every other day) -- and enjoy whatever we have, whether it's drinks at the bar, a themed dinner, a quiet lunch, a fundraising event, or appetizers and local music. Try Domestic. Their extensive beer and wine selection (which always includes a number from the area) and fabulous grass-fed WV beef and pork combined with their chefs' seasonally-inspired offerings make it a locavore's choice. Try Domestic. Make it your choice, too.

I have been in to have a beer before and was quite pleased. 5 stars for ambiance and decor. Well done. Friendly staff. All great so far ... But the food. My meal was a disaster. I didn't want it to be a disaster! I wanted it to be 5 star. If you scroll through my reviews you can see that I eat a LOT of burgers at a lot of respectable restaurants. I'd like to think I have a good gauge for "what's OK" and what isn't. Chopping up a raw onion and putting it in your burger? Not OK. Especially since I expressly asked for "no onion, I hate onions ..." At first I thought it was just an overly flavorful and gristly burger. Nope! I am crunching on onions. Yuck. I ate half of my burger. Fries were OK but the presentation was truly lacking and my catsup (ketchup?) showed up long after I was done eating.

If I could rate this restaurant purely by aesthetics it would be a resounding five star review! However, since I had to rate it not only the aesthetics, but also the food and service, I would give Domestic 3 stars. Having gone to Shepherdstown at a late hour for a Father's Day lunch, I was ecstatic to find that such a cute restaurant like Domestic was still open at 3 pm for lunch. We walked in and were enthusiastically greeted and seated in a well-lit room with interesting artwork on the wall. The menu was basic - appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers. Basic isn't bad, it's just... basic. At the recommendation of our waitress, I ordered the portabella (mushroom) sandwich with fries. The portions were small, but the meal was good. My brother ordered a burger about 7-10 minutes after the rest of us placed our food orders, but it took much longer (over 20 minutes) for his meal to arrive after everyone else had finished their meals. It wasn't a major inconvenience because we weren't in a rush to go anywhere, but it would have been nice to have gotten updates as to why it was taking so long, or offer him bread while he waited or something of that nature. The wait staff, though friendly, were splitting their time between servicing our table and servicing folks at the bar. I know we were not eating during peak "lunch" hours, but that made it hard to get our server's attention. If I lived in the area, I probably would frequent this establishment for their drinks and appetizers, but not a sit down meal.

Upon recommendation from my friend who is a Shepherdstown native, we ended up at Domestic on a Saturday night. We walked in and the place was nearly empty-- we were seated in the main dining room and we were the only ones in there. The menu states that their concept "reflects our views on what we think a creative American restaurant can be." With a statement like that, you'd think the menu was going to be really innovative and exciting! Maybe I am spoiled by the foodie wonderland that I call home (and others call Atlanta), but I wasn't blown away by Domestic. The food was alright, but their marketing may have oversold it. We shared the beer battered mushroom appetizer, and it was ok but badly needed seasoning. I had the veggie pot pie, which was more like a stew with a thin layer of crust on top (c'mon man! everyone knows you get pot pie for the puff pastry!!). My friends seemed to like their chili and flatbread. But overall, the food was nothing to write home about. If I could, I'd give 3.5 stars for a nice drink menu and cool ambiance. If I lived here, I would probably stop by for drinks and apps.

I came during the Shepherdstown Festival as a refuge for the pouring rain. I liked the sparse yet chic decor and the service was good. I wanted to just sample the place and had a caprese salad. It was tasty and I had a strawberry cheesecake drink with a graham cracker crust. I didn't taste any of the alcohol but it had a nice flavor. The menu did seem a bit pricey and it cost more than I thought it should for two cups of Maryland Crab soup, a caprese salad and a drink (I had my two girls with me). But overall, I would come back.

Domestic continues to provide the best eats in town as a new chef steps up to deliver savory and sweet in a new way: fast! Two new features at Domestic include an expanded desert menu and the ability to serve large parties in a timely fashion. I didn't think it could get better, but it did. The wait staff is exceptional as usual, and if you are lucky enough to get Leslie as your server you will also get the benefit of her lovely smile and attentive service. These changes show that the owner is involved, knowledgable, and dedicated to providing the best space, food, drinks, and service possible. Keep up the great work, Domestic!

Cute and hip little spot in Shepherdstown. We were in town from Los Angeles and found this great restaurant on German Street. We very much enjoyed the local beer options The great service. I had a yum Lasagna and my sister had a turkey burger which was so so. All in all a great eat!
(4)Anton D.
What a great surprise finding this gem. We went to Domestic for the first time and everything was exceptional; the service, the food and the atmosphere are hands down the best we've had in Shepherdstown. This is a must if you are in the area!!!
(5)Gail Maya-g T.
Nice decor, friendly staff, delicious food, gluten-free options and - best of all for me - dog friendly! This is one of the best restaurants I've tried in the area. For sure will try them again. Recommended.

A Family Meal Ruined By Poor Service This is not a food review due to no food being served. We went into this restaurant with high hopes due to a fairly high review score. BUT DO NOT BE DECEIVED. We sat for a full hour before having to REPEATEDLY ask the wait staff about our appetizers. Who proceeded to tell us that people that made reservations had priority over our meal even though we were there far before them, And when our appetizers finally arrived half and hour AFTER THAT they were cold and sub par at best. We finally left after a hour and 45 minutes had passed. Currently headed to five guys with for better service and better food. Update to my experience at Domestic. The owner of the resturant messages me calling me a jackass and told me never to come back. A real restaurant would of invited me to comeback and win me over. But it seems that Domestic really doesn't have the food to woo me. I will never know because they didn't serve me any.

This place is really cool and it has a lot to offer with it's attentive service, comfortably hip atmosphere, and delicious food. I decided to give it a whirl for two reasons: 1) I was missing home (San Francisco); 2) I loved the aesthetic. It's a radical departure from the fast food, chains and crumby restaurants in the surrounding towns. Great specials offered on each of three nights I visited, each and every meal was delicious! From the pork chops and rib eye, to the grilled caesar and grilled asparagus - the food alone begged me back (my three visits were in one week by the way!). The owner was there on two of my visits - he's very friendly and down to earth. I appreciated their simple but ample menu, and the selection of wine, cocktails and beer (think hand-crafted). **of note, they're eager to assist in gluten alternatives and even have a gluten free beer!**
(5)Alice G.
YASSSS! 1 million yes's for Domestic, please! I went here with my friend, and the menu was so well written, we couldn't decide what we wanted. Everything sounded so good. The chef happened to be nearby and she recommended some amazingness she just whipped up. She even gave us the backstory on the veggies and the farm they came from. Gave me some shades of that one Portlandia sketch but regardless, THE FOOD WAS SO GOOD! Every five seconds, my friend and I kept saying, "oh my god, this food is so good." Absolutely delicious. Seasonal. Savory. Fragrant. Goat cheese so good, you're going to grow goat horns. I don't remember what I ate, I just remember how I felt while I was eating it. Isn't that some testimony right there? Great place. I wish I was a fancy person who had fancy events they could cater. If you're scrolling Yelp wondering, "eh, should we eat here?" do yourself a favor and please eat here!
(5)Carla K.
Fantastic! Fantastic! Fantastic! First, let me start by saying that Shepherdstown is a delightful little college town. And, Domestic is a delightful little restaurant! I REALLY wanted a bloody mary and the bartender didn't disappoint. Their craft beer selection was well paired to their menu. The food was fresh and YUMMY! Well done, Domestic!
(5)Bill W.
Great menu. Changes periodically with new innovations. Very good value for your money. Same meal in DC would cost at least twice as much. New pastry chef - leave room for desert. A regular diner from DC.
(5)Travis J.
Great food and service. Had lamb chop and filet steak. Had their cheese cake and girlfriend had their chocolate cake. Definitely will go back.

To put things simply, Domestic has been a bit of a disappointment so far for me. I've been twice, once for a lunch on a Sunday, and another time for what should have been a nice date on a Friday night. If I were to review this restaurant exclusively in comparison to other restaurants in Berkeley County, it might deserve 3 stars. If I lived a little closer, it'd be a fine place to stop for drinks and appetizers, but that's probably it. Obviously it's higher quality than the run-of-the-mill chain fair around, but it still has far to go to live up to it's own menu claims of "what we think an American restaurant can be." Be The first time I went, the first thing the server let us know that nearly everything on the printed menu was no longer accurate. She was friendly and helpful, but when every item on the menu is changed, it can be a bit of a pain to figure out what you want and to remember what she said. Service was a little sluggish, but not overly so, and the food that first visit was reasonably good, but the portions were a bit small and the prices weren't justified, in my opinion. Overall, I thought it was a decent lunch, but nothing special. Still, I liked the ambiance, with the local art decorating the walls throughout, and it looked like they had a decent selection of drinks. I definitely wanted to give it another shot on a dinner date another time. Unfortunately, the second trip to Domestic, a date with my girlfriend, did nothing to improve my impressions, and in fact, quite lowered them. The visit started well: we had called ahead to see if we should get a reservation but were told that wouldn't be necessary and they had open seats. We arrived and were seated quickly. Our server did a bit of a hit-and-run at our table at first, saying "hello" and dropping off two glasses of water and disappearing before any other words could be said. She came back a few minutes later and complemented my on my style, and asked what she could do for us. It didn't take us too long to decide we both wanted to try the prix fixe 3-course selection of BBQ Bacon-wrapped Shrimp, Ribeye Steak with red potatoes, and chocolate cake. Little did we know at this point which direction the evening would take. We waited about 20-30 minutes for the appetizer shrimp. These were in interesting concoction, and while I'm not normally a big fan of many shrimp dishes, these were pretty good, mostly because the shrimp were truly mammoth-sized--though there were only two for each of use. It was downhill from there, though as it took OVER AN HOUR for the rest of our food to come out; an hour between appetizer and entree is unbelievably unacceptable. When I finally started to ask the server how much longer it would be, she cut me off in mid-sentence and said the food was on its way. The entre did eventually come, but it wasn't what the menu described. The potatoes had been replaced with risotto, which caused my girlfriend some concern as she is very particular about what she orders due to some allergies she has. Had she been told the the menu was changed, she could have ordered something else--instead of waiting over an hour for something she wasn't expecting. The risotto was good for what it was, in my opinion. The steak itself was very thinly cut--probably the thinnest ribeye I've had. I ordered medium rare, but it was cooked a little past that. It was still quite tender, but the taste was nothing exceptional. Both steaks had large sections of fat, leaving the already smallish 8 oz. steaks even smaller. The chocolate cake was served cold; I doubt it was made in-house. It was again satisfactory, but nothing special. Midway through eating our entree, our server came up to the table, knelt down and asked if there was anything she could do to make our experience better; she noted that she could see in our body language and faces that we weren't satisfied with our experience thus far. We let her know about the allergy concerns over the menu change, regarding which she was very apologetic for not having informed us. She stated that she would offer us dessert on the house, but since that was already included in the prix fixe, she offered to take the one meal completely off the bill. Then either the manager or owner stopped by as we were wrapping up dessert, and he noted that he was very sorry that our experience was less than perfect and that there were problems in the kitchen. I do hope that Domestic is usually a better experience for other people and that the my experiences have been the outliers. Before they took the one meal off the bill, I was thinking that I probably wouldn't return, due to the slow service, high price, and mediocre food. However, because they did make an effort to make things right, I'll probably give them another shot eventually.

This was our first time eating here. The decor is every nice, very friendly staff. Very clean restaurant. So I'm sure at this point you are curious why only 3 stars. Waitress was not well trained she did not know the menu, and what was in the desserts. I blame management or the owner. You need to have your wait staff try all food so they can give customers better information. The chef well he also is not well trained either. If an item is 86 then you tell your wait staff before making the meal. He is either arrogant or ignorant, or just does not understand how the restaurant business works. I ordered a Ruben and instead of informing my waitress that the rye bread is 86. Chef took it upon himself to choose white bread for my sandwich. And it was not even good white Bread. I think he ran down to Betty's and bought toast and used that on my sandwich. It was not grilled just toasted and slightly burnt. CHEIF you want to keep your job and the restaurant going do not make food choose for your customers. Shame on you. The portion were small given the price and food quality. My husband had fish and chips he said it was good. Seemed like 2 different kinds of fries on the plate kinda odd The chocolate torte was great but small portion cost $8.00 waitress said all desserts are made in house. But looked store bought. So again poor training, don't lie to customers. The service was kinda slow, but I think it was the kitchen, and we were the only people with food orders up, so that was odd. I wish I would have taken pictures now of the food. But go see for yourself. I may give them another try but not anytime soon. I will wait till I see their reviews get better. Good luck.

We spent Valentines Day with friends at Domestic.... Disappointing to say the least. I tried the 3 course offering and left a little hungry. Flavors were good but plain. My surf and turf contained 2 small lamb chops and 2 scallops with broccoli and dry pasty gnocchi. My husbands grits had an excellent flavor but again, a skimpy portion of 4 shrimp. The pasta and burger my friends had didn't look like anything I'd want to return for. The restaurant was fairly empty and the wait time was very long. I can't say for sure but our visit was two hours and we didn't find the need to hang out after our meal.

Hubby and I needed a date night, so we went out for late drinks in Shepherdstown. We were looking for something new and I loved the look of everything on their web site. The drinks were great and the food was very good. It felt like a cool place and had a good vibe. The service was not overly attentive, but it was a late dinner so I didnt expect it to be perfect. I would go again and recommend it to anyone looking for a low key, relaxing place.

I have enjoyed everything I have eaten here, but somehow always leave feeling slightly underwhelmed. The menu makes everything sound so delicious, but really everything is just pretty good. On a good day, this is one of the best spots in Shepherdstown, just avoid it when it's too busy or too slow or too cold or too hot or when they have too many cooks/servers working there or not enough.
(3)Sandy S.
Yummy yummy yummy! I had the grilled shrimp and my husband has the ribeye. We shared the mussels as an appetizer. Everything was perfect!
(5)Josh W.
The decor is quite well done, and the menu has a number of intriguing-sounding options. However, at least with the recipies that my wife and I tried, there is significant room for improvement. We had the lobster macaroni and cheese as an appetizer. It was somewhat bland, and could have been vastly improved by some garlic powder. A bit more salt might have been helpful, as well. My wife's flank steak was unevenly cooked. She had asked for it to come rare, but most of it was distinctly medium. If they had been offering a more marbled cut of meat, their methods would have been more appropriate, but flank steak should only be cooked rare or medium rare, and due to its lean nature, is less forgiving. I had a pork chop, with a root beer reduction. The surface, where the reduction slightly coated the meat, was reasonably flavorful. However, the pork chop was extremely thick and overcooked throughout. The size of the cut eliminated any potential penetration of seasoning into the center of the meat. Overnight marination may be an option, to correct the issue, but this would probably best be addressed by providing a chop of half the thickness, with more of an eye towards retaining the natural fatty moisture of the meat and a consistent flavor profile. My wife and I both felt that the bacon-cooked cabbage could have been sauteed for longer, so that it lost its crunchiness (and I generally prefer raw or undercooked vegetables). The service was friendly and attentive. The prices are somewhat cheaper than restaurants in major metropolitan areas with similar profiles. Overall, I'd say the place has the potential to provide some contemporary fine dining in the charming and quaint downtown area of Shepherdstown, but the recipies and presentation require refinement in order to compare well to experiences available in more urban areas.

The five of us stopped in Domestic today for lunch. Two of us had burgers which I thought were cooked as ordered and were very tasty. My wife had the turkey and bacon Panini which she thought was excellent. We thought that the French fries were very good. One of us had one of their salads which was very good, maybe a little small. The service was just fine. Would definitely eat there again when back in town.

Great burger, good beer selection. (Though my only real criterion for that is Yuengling availability!) Friendly, attentive wait staff. Fish tacos so-so, but what do you want for $2? Tables at front great for people-watching. Overall, a nice dining option in Shepherdstown and my favorite there.

I ordered the roast pork dinner. The pork was very dry and the mashed potatoes were cold when they first came out. The red cabbage was good. I should have sent the food back but I didn't want to make a stink. The prices are too high for what you get.

I have experienced better "hipster" dining before. It looks nice on the outside and in, but the quality of food versus the amount you receive and the cost doesn't match the ambiance. It seems like they are trying to be a very high end restaurant and are taking pointers from tv shows like kitchen nightmares. I ordered the steak and I got about a half a steak cut up for me and on a mountain of mashed potatoes. I rather see my whole steak and know what I am paying for. Overall I will not be going back unless they realize they need to lower there prices just a bit to keep up the business in Shepherdstown, or they will soon be closing their doors.

We enjoyed beers and cocktails at Domestic. The bar and atmosphere was really nice and the food looked good. We got to chat with the really personable owner and hope to come back to enjoy the food!

We've been to Domestic several times. When they first opened, it did seem to take extra long before the food got to the table....but that has improved. I like the décor and what they have done inside. My husband is a huge fan of the catfish with grits.... my five year old really enjoys the pizza with strawberries, bacon, and vinaigrette or the mac and cheese with the smoky mushrooms. I tend to change what I select more frequently and typically try a locally sourced entrée, when available, and have never had a bad meal. We really like the owner, who impressed us by remembering details about our conversations that we had months before, and hope his business does well.

Two stars for potential, zero for execution. The wait staff, although pleasant and friendly, are clearly not trained and inattentive. Using a tray so that more than one glass of water at a time could be brought to the table would be a start. Noticing that our food was burned, cold, and missing ingredients would also be helpful. The kitchen staff, although we were told were getting used to a new menu, was unskilled at best. The sandwiches sounded simple but interesting...grilled swiss and country ham with and egg and thousand island dressing sounds good. It was cold, dry, and instead of dressing had a spicy honey mustard sauce. This was after it was first delivered to the table missing the egg and the dressing altogether and completely burned and cold. The manager was apologetic after half of the table got their order while the other three had to wait an additional 15 minutes but not enough for how egregious an error this was. Training is in order all around.
