So glad we discovered this little Mom and Pop taco shop! They make the BEST tacos I've had anywhere around WV, VA, MD, PA and I'm always looking. My girlfriend is vegetarian but after trying one of the fish tacos, she's putting these fish tacos on her list of veggies. We talked to the owners while having our lunch. The Dad runs the register and the Mom (native to the Baja Peninsula) cooks up the amazing grub. Sauces are made in house, everything is cooked to order. The vegetarian quesadillas are without a doubt the best I've ever had. They have great deals, like .99 cent taco tuesdays and special fish tacos on Friday during Lent. Seriously, if you are anywhere within a thirty minute drive of this place, go there now!!

Ranson, in Jeffferson County, WV, is an odd area food wise. There are a ton of your usual crappy chains (for some reason there are like 6 Subways in the county now), and as a result, a lot of decent places get lost among the advertising power and name recognition of subpar drive thru type places. Thankfully, Ortegas not only makes outstanding food, but they are doing quite well, so they should be around for quite a while. This place makes tacos that make Taco Bells overly salted junk look like dog food by comparison, and honestly, the prices at Ortegas are so low that you can get top quality food for not much more than you would pay for the drive thru chain stuff. If the only type of tacos you have had are the usual Taco Bell/old el paso make at home boxed stuff, Ortegas will be a revelation for you. Street tacos are pretty basic to look at: a smaller tortilla than your usual taco, your choice of meat, and a little pico on top... but when every ingredient is made with care, it is just an explosion of perfect flavor. Tortillas that taste delicious - instead of the bland nothing that a lot of them taste like. It's a pleasure to eat a taco where the wrapper has flavor instead of just existing to hold the innards together. Of course, those delicious tortillas are wrapped around your choice of meats, all of which are ridiculously tasty. No matter which meat you choose, the combination of the juicy, spicy meat with the pico and top quality tortilla is addicting. One of the first times I went there was for taco Tuesday when they do 99 cent tacos. I bought 12 for myself and my wife... and I had to go back, because all my wife got to see of that order was the empty bag. They are that good. For years, I kept seeing Anthony Bourdain and all these other TV hosts talking about how great authentic street tacos were. Unfortunately, there has never been a place here that made them before. After a while, I convinced myself that they are just tacos... how different could they taste from what I had tried before? Boy was I wrong. While I can't speak to the authenticity of these tacos myself, I have talked to people from Mexico, Texas, Arizona, and California who swear that these are as good as any street tacos they've ever had anywhere.

Wow! This place great! Coming from California and having our Mexican friends make us Tacos and Burritos, we're use to great tasting food. This place rivals that. And the Chips are awesome!

Great little Taco Shop! Stopped in for some quick Mexican food while visiting family. I live in California and there is a Taco Shop (Taquería) on every street corner out here. I was surprised when I saw street tacos on the menu. I got one of each: carne asada, chicken, machaca and carnitas. They were amazing! Just like the one's here back at home. The place is clean, service is great and the food is seasoned perfectly! The prices are very good. You can get lunch or dinner here for well under $10 and it's all homemade. Defintely hitting up this place when I come back to visit!

This is authentic, flavorful and lovingly crafted Mexican street food. These are the best street tacos I have had North of Santa Fe or Dallas. If you want real Mexican street food come here with an open mind and an empty stomach. GREAT corn tortillas!

Craving some good tacos?.... This place is well take care of your craving... Taco Tuesday... The carne asada quesadilla is my favorite...

I'm definitely a big fan of this place. The only thing I am disappointed about is that we didn't find this sooner! Great customer service and authentic food. We had tacos and chips with guac and queso. I know I will be visiting this place very often this summer. Taco Tuesdays are about to be my new best friend (99 cent tacos all day!)

My sister just moved to the area and discovered Ortegas. She took our whole family (6 of us) and we loved it! Really fresh ingredients, crisp made-in-house tortilla chips and guacamole, and not-too-big, not-too small street tacos. All in a removed gas station no less. Vegetarian-friendly, the veggie quesadillas were especially good.

  • Michelle M.

Great food, fast service & great prices! The street tacos are my favorite. The food is more of an authentic style, which is a big plus! It's a great place to stop in and grab a quick bite to eat.

I have been coming here awhile. I check in when I remember. I have to say this place was average to start and on my last 3 visits has been in a gradual decline. 1) no chorizo 2) meat tasteless 3) toppings decreasing 4) everying is extra, .50 for queso fresco, .50 sour cream(daisy), no crema. 5) street tacos today I couldn't even taste the cilantro and only had like 5 pieces of onion. 6) priced don't seem to match what you get. For $5 more else where I could have had bottomless chips and salsa, and could put my own sauces on.

    (3)
  • Justin P.

This place was great! Only four stars because their queso dip is just like the nacho cheese dip from Taco Bell. Other than that, when they say hot, they don't mean Taco Bell hot!

  • Jeremy H.

This place kills it! Very authentic style, fresh ingredients and prepared fresh daily. The pescado burrito is spectacular! Taco Tuesday is the best deal you can get. The beat taco shop in the area!

Ortegas lives up to its nearly perfect rating. I tagged along with my parents on road trip to West Virginia for the day with nothing much planned. On a whim, we decided to grab food before we headed back to Maryland, so I went on Yelp and this was the first place to pop up. My dad and I were at first skeptical if this place could really live up to the hype...and it definitely did. Fresh, heavenly, and cheap just sums up my first experience eating street tacos. Not sure how I've never had it before but I won't turn back now. While my dad ordered the carne asada burrito (big thumps up), my mom ordered the nachos supreme (most expensive item on the menu at $7.99 - can't beat that). By just looking at the nachos, the ingredients are nicely layered, fresh, and you can taste it in each bite. Also, you can tell with a good tortilla chip if its able to hold a tremendous amount of layers including guac without breaking. Hence, we bought a large bag of the homemade corn tortilla chips to-go. The only time I felt upset about was knowing I can't experience the $.99 Taco Tuesdays.

Is this the best kept secret in the area? Because they should have a line around the corner. This is our third time eating here. Street tacos for .99 on Tuesdays! Can't beat that! The staff is friendly and accommodating. So far we have tried: Street tacos- not a fan of onions and they leave them off if you ask. Flavorful shredded beef. Regular tacos- had the steak. Lean grilled steak. Queso- who doesn't love a bowl of melted cheese? Guacamole- tastes so fresh. Looks fresh too. Great flavor. Chips-made on site. thick and crunchy. So basically, I really like this place.

After a day of driving through Maryland and VA backroads we were ready for some good grub. I hit up my favorite app yelp to help us find something. I found Ortega's Taco Shop, with nearly five stars and One review that said the place was cute and clean. Another said they were "off the chain". We laughed about it and decided to check them out. Oh man! So glad we did! Finding good tacos in VA has proved impossible. And technically this place in actually in West VA. We still have yet to find good tacos in VA. I live over an hour away from this place and my hubby and I are obsessed. We make the drive once or twice a month just for these tacos. The food is amazing, amazingly cheap and the service is always quick and friendly. If you are a fan of simple but yummy street tacos hit this place up! They really are "off the chain"!

I discovered this place accidentally here on Yelp. My husband and I decided to stop through to check it out. I got the supreme nachos with pork. It was a lot and pretty darn good. There was a lot of queso cheese on it, just the way I like it. I loved the fact the tortilla chips were homemade and so delicious. My husband orders the supreme hardshell tacos pork and chicken, he enjoyed them. Overall we both like this place very much. We will be coming back again.

  • Steve J.

Taco Tuesday!!!! Their pork or beef or bean street tacos are incredible. Also get the tortilla chips and quac. It is great to go to a place that makes their own chips. Perfect street's.

Stopped in to Ortega's once again to fill up on Mexi-grub. I ordered five chicken burritos, two fish tacos, and several cheese quesadillas. After 10 minutes, our food was ready. Just as they gave us our food, five more customers walked in for lunch. Good timing! The hot chicken burrito wasn't very spicy at all so I added my own hot sauce to kick it up a notch. Lettuce was not included and costed extra. Who charges for lettuce? There was a lot of refried beans and not much rice and chicken. The burrito was pretty good, but they could really do so much better. If you make the best burrito in town, people will come from all around. Trust me on that. None of the four kids finished eating their quesadillas, so that says something. The one redeeming menu item is the fish tacos. I really like them and if I can remember next time I'm visiting Ranson, I'll order them. Again, they're boxed fish filets, but with the tangy sauce, they're yummy.

  • Colleen A.

I go there as often as I can! Taco Tuesday's are where it's at. They're always polite, quick, and above all DELICIOUS! They have, hands down, the best chips and salsa!

  • Dave C.

My wife and I love this place! We discovered them about a year ago. We had been searching for some great Mexican food after moving to the area from Utah. This place delivers!

    (5)
  • Travis E.

I LOVE this place. I ate here months ago while I was visiting. This restaurant was the best part of my whole trip. The owner is from San Diego and knows his stuff. I recommend going on Tuesday, as you can get tacos in the cheap!

  • Shanna M.

Baja Tacos, all the way! So good!

    (5)
  • Steven H.

These are some of the best street tacos I've ever had. I've tried their burritos and was pretty impressed as well. Taco Tuesday's are the best as they offer a variety of their tacos for only $1! Definitely worth a stop if you're craving authentic Mexican at a good price.

    (5)
  • Kay G.

I LOVED the fact that she had actual burritos and tacos, but my ONLY issue was the cheese they use for the nachos, bleh, and also, they put this funky spice on the nachos, opt out of that, and the meat they use for the burritos was not seasoned, so made everything pretty bland. Next time I will try a different meat. And if not, I will find another place to go.

    (2)
  • Kelly C.

OMG... These are real street tacos! This is all home made and delicious. Best I've had since moving here from the west coast. If you've ever been to southern Cali or Tijuana and dig the street tacos, you'll be right at home here. Refried beans are also made here, not canned crap. The carne asada is #1!

  • Michael M.

Ortega's is a diamond in the rough. Situated in the heart of Ranson, a town you probably wouldn't consider a good place to look for high quality Tex-mex, is this tiny but decadent taco joint. If you're looking for light, trendy, upscale tacos and authentic Mexican food, this probably isn't the place for you. If you're hung over and have been gambling all night and need a salty, cheesy, creamy, gooey plate of deliciousness to pick you up and put you in a food coma, then this is definitely the place for you. Imagine Taco Bell but with better quality, real ingredients, better flavors and home made with love. Their chips are house made, super crunchy and worth the trip alone. Buy a plate of nachos and take home a bag of chips for a little extra. Good choices of meat.

    (4)
  • Liza B.

I travel a lot in Brownsville, Tx and they have the best street tacos there. Ortega's street tacos taste awesome just like they are in Brownsville. We ordered baja, street and regular tacos. They didn't fail us. Everything tastes great.

    (5)
  • Ryan R.

The burritos here are amazing. My family and I are addicted. We go here all the time! The chips and salsa are also great.

    (5)
  • Holly M.

I love the nachos here. I am not a big fan of shredded meat so I usually get them loaded sans the meat. I really shouldn't, but I finish them all by myself everytime.

    (5)
  • Jennifer B.

Hands down, the best tacos in town! You can't go wrong with the Baja Fish tacos and yummy homemade tortilla chips and they have a 99 cent Taco Tuesday! Great place for pick up, not so great for seating as it is limited and the place lacks decor. Overall, if you try it you'll love it.

    (4)
  • Christina H.

Wow! Seriously the best tacos I can ever remember having the pleasure of scarfing down. We tried all 3 taco varieties and they were delicious. We will definitely be coming here waaaaay too much! :)

  • Cat M.

THE BAJA FISH TACOS ARE OFF THE CHAIN. I'm a snob; I've had good fish tacos (shout out to El Pelón in Boston!) and bad fish tacos (no names mentioned), but these fish tacos? Holy Cow. Whitefish lightly fried in canola oil, served with fresh shredded cabbage, fresh onion, and a spicy aioli style sauce in a corn tortilla; the flavor is perfect and perfectly spicy. The owner is super health-conscious and offers plenty of vegetarian and vegan options, and can easily work with customers to make a gluten-free meal. A rarity for *all* restaurants around here. I also keep trying to buy bags of the house-made chips with some house-made salsa to bring to my family, but by the time I get back to my family the chips are pretty much gone. You know they're made fresh daily -- you can tell when handmade tortilla chips go stale, real easily -- and they're more addicting than Pringles. Finally, I find the prices perfectly reasonable. And any place that offers an incentive like .99 cent tacos on Tuesdays, and will allow customers to order up to 10 (for crying out loud who needs 10 tacos), is making their handmade, homemade food available for a good price. I'd rather pay a little extra to watch my food being made by someone who's getting paid a decent living wage. Unfortunately, my beloved panhandle struggles a little with international cuisine and while I appreciate that there are some people who might review Ortega's poorly because they didn't find it up to their expectations, I would recommend that those people start diversifying their palate and be open to new culinary experiences. Please don't base your expertise in Authentic Mexican Cuisine on weekly trips to Taco Bell.

Thanks to yelp we found this mom and pop shop in the heart of Charles town. From the road, driving by, it doesn't look like much. We wanted to try as much as we could so we ended up ordering one of pretty much everything: the chicken tortilla soup, pollo and carne asada street tacos, machaca and carnitas regular tacos and a baja taco. Everything was incredible! We went back for more, it was so good. The prices were very reasonable and the portions for extras was great. You could at least 1/2c of sour cream for 50 cents. The chicken tortilla soup is much more like a noddleleaa chicken noodle soup but still good. The baja taco which is a golden fried fish taco with house made aioli sauce took the cake. Best taco I've ever had. The carnitas regular taco came in a close second. The meat is flavorful and juicy. The tortilla chips are authentic, thick and golden fried. So very very good. The only thing missing, a cold beer.

I go for the food. I try to stop here at least once a week- it's that good. Fish Tacos/Burritos, Street Tacos, Burritos, Chips, etc. are addictive . . .hopefully the DEA won't take notice. If they start serving homemade horchata, I'll give them a 6th star.

  • Susan S.

Being from Southern California I am going to say that this place is muy bien!!!! The street tacos are right on the money & priced perfect! Meat, cilantro, & onions on a double corn tortilla served with lime wedges! It does not get much better! If you want heat ask for the hot salsa & that should do the trick. I myself cook & eat the habanero so the hot salsa was mild for me but quite tasty! Keep up the good work & please add posole on the weekends with all of the fixings & I will be there! :)

Excellent food and great lunch specials during the week! Taco Tuesday is great as well as freeloader Friday. Prices are higher than some places but makes up for it with the taste. I will definitely be back.

Authentic Mexican tacos and homemade tortilla chips with amazing guacamole in small town WV? Dream come true. Affordable, delicious and authentic. What more could you want? This will be a weekly rotation spot for us now, we are beside ourselves with excitement after finding a great taqueria in our hometown area.

This is a new restaurant and the food is delicious! It's a quaint and clean environment and outdoor seating is available. I had a burrito and nachos...yum! The staff is extremely friendly too. Two thumbs up! I can predict that I'll soon be considered a "regular" here.

After living in LA for years I never expected to find such an authentic taqueria in Ranson, West Virginia!!! Amazing food and quality costumer service!!! Five stars all the way!!! Homemade chips and salsa are a must try!!!

  • Christine S.

Our family's favorite taco stand! We haven't tried everything on the menu yet, but we've thoroughly enjoyed everything we've had. The carne asada is a particular fave, as is the guacamole and taco salad. It's clear that the business's owners take care to prepare all the food from scratch, with fresh, quality ingredients. Our kids, normally quite picky eaters, have nothing but praise for this place and we've all been impressed with the friendly service. It's also a cute addition to our area -- just the sight of the outdoor tables and umbrellas on Ranson Circle makes me smile :-)

  • Jennifer C.

Real tacos. No ground meat here. They offer shredded and chopped meat, I love the street tacos and the ability to get soft corn tacos. The salsa could be spicier, but I think the food is good overall.

    (4)
  • Christina M.

Love the Carnitas Street Tacos, the Chicken Taco Salad (best shell ever), and the Baja Fish Tacos.... All so delicious.... Friendly, family owned place, happy to have them right around the corner from the office.

  • Kara C.

Great little place. Three tables inside, a few tables on the patio, this place makes great chips and great guacamole. They have street tacos, regular tacos and baja fish tacos, burritos, quesadilla, vegetarian, pork, beef, chicken AND fish options. Good prices, friendly service. Clean and cute atmosphere. I will definitely be back!

Absolutely perfect! The taco Tuesday special is so worth it! All choices are good but the Carnitas is rockin! Will definitely be back for more!

Fantastic little taco shop located in our little West Virginia town! I have lived in both Southern California and South Texas where I became well adapted to authentic Mexican food- this place is the real deal! A personal favorite is the Pescado Burrito (Fish burrito)- the combination of the rice, beans, talapia, cabbage, and the amazing homemade baja sauce is killer!! Don't forget to grab a bag of chips when you go- these scrumptious little devils are made fresh daily and are AMAZING!!!!

  • k j.

Really enjoyed this place. Tiny Taco Shop with lots of options. I've had a few different types but the Steak Tacos (I like the crispy flour tortillas personally) are great. I don't live very close but every time I am in the area I plan on going back for a couple tacos. The prices are good too. I believe they have a taco tuesday with like 99cent tacos!

  • Molly F.

Love this little place and the staff are wondeful happy people. When I was in yesterday I overheard the owner saying it's been 4 months since they opened the doors and business is great! Excellent I say!! The food is great!!! I have tried almost all of the menu since they opened! If you want authentic Mexican try this place,.. you won't be disappointed! The place is clean, ample parking and you can sit outside if you wish. A great little family business, a dream come true for the owner who seems to be so proud of her accomplishment! I am excited that my first Yelp review is about Ortega Taco Shop!

    (5)
  • Jane P.

Absolutely delicious, homemade Mexican. I have been there several times and so far my favorite is the burrito pescado. It is a meal in a tortilla. The burrito carnitas is also fantastic. My husband had fish tacos for lunch and wanted to go back for more for dinner. A couple more tables inside might be good, but as far as the food goes, it couldn't be better

    (5)
  • J D.

Horrible food. I bought some nachos here and the cheese, of the same consistency as 7-11, was so disgusting. I hate to write a bad review like this for a small, family owned place, but the food was horrible.

    (1)
  • RG S.

Menu and decor: think of this as a taco truck that happens to have a few tables. The good: my wife likes fish tacos and said the one she had with hot sauce was her favorite in the area. Not so good: my vegetarian burrito was 4 parts rice to 1 part beans with little flavor on a slightly stale flour tortilla. All drinks come from the cooler, so water will cost you $1.89. Ortegas is a step up from Taco Bell, but you can find better Mexican food in the area.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
