I have been going to Dielhs Rest. for years. But our family went Friday around 3:30 pm and they were not busy. Place was Not busy. Service... Very Slow. Food: Terrible. I have never experienced this before at Diehls. I ordered the Chicken and Rice. Very, Very disappointing. They use chicken fajita chicken for chicken and rice. The rice was old. After eating I got sick as soon as I got in the car. Someone needs to teach them how to properly make Chicken and rice. For the price, It should be FRESH Chicken boneless chicken breast. Rice should be whole -grain white rice, not Old yellow rice that had been precooked and stored in the fridge for days. Way over priced for what they served. Get this on the next order. My wife ordered the German style steak. LOL this was also a joke for the price. for almost $18.00 you get a hamburger on a plate with cheese onions and mushrooms. What a JOKE. $18.00 for a hamburger on a plate. Diehls has gone Down hill and they are Way Overpriced. They only thing that was good was the salad and the fried taters. They need a new menu and and learn how to cook chicken and rice. Yes we got ripped off $40.00 for 2 meals, chicken and rice was a disgrace to chicken and rice. Hamburger on a plate for $18.00, lol Yep that says it all. I hope Diehls management reads this review and makes correction, or else I would say they are going down hill. Could have eaten at Golden coral and eaten a better meal for less. Our family's have been customers for YEARS.

I have heard sooo many good things about the restaurant. First, we go in and are seated. We order our food. My child ordered chicken tenders. When I read all about how everything is home made, etc., etc. I did not even fathom chicken tenders that were in shapes and out of a bag. These chicken tenders are not even 100% white meat. What's up with that? Oh, when we ordered, I asked if it were possible if we could get our bread with our salads. The answer... no. Why, I asked, well, not sure, I did it once before and there was a big mix up with the kitchen and someone did not pay for their bread. If the bread is on the ticket, your paying for it. Well, I ordered the baked steak with mashed potatoes. All the information about potatoes and all they do with them. The mash was runny. Very runny. This was a very disappointing trip for me. I will not be going back.

THE BEST CHICKEN HOAGIE EVER! One snowy day In January 2011, I stayed in Nitro, West Virginia and have eaten there many times at this family owned restaurant with race car flair and memorabilia. Every time I go, I order the J.R. House - Chicken Fajita Hoagie. But I call it the JayBird Chicken Hoagie because I add three slices yummy crisp bacon to the mix! It is awesome, it has deliciosly grilled chicken strips, grilled sweet onions, green peppers, lettuce and a secret sauce thats been passed down over the decades. I swear this is the best Hoagie I've ever eaten. For those that don't know J.R House, he's a local two sports star from Nitro High School that took the football team to the 1998 Football State Championship. He now plays baseball for the New York Mets Triple-A team, the Buffalo Bisons. If thats too much info, don't worry about it and just remember the Chicken Fajita Hoagie and add some bacon please! And if you're still hungry, this Cali. kid warns you to try the pies, OMG! (Oh my God, for those that don't know). Awesome local flavor!

I loved this place. It is a really cool diner that has been in business for years. The food was really good and the price was fair. I got the roast beef and it was great! I'll be back for sure.

Ate here again this past weekend. Still the best salad dressings I've ever had. The dressings come on the side, which is nice, so you can request more than one, if it's hard for you to decide. I had the ranch and thousand island and my husband had the ranch and French. Soooooo delicious. We both ordered the grilled, breaded tilapia. The tilapia is very lightly breaded, which is nice for that type of fish. It was very good. for my other side, I had the broccoli and cheese sauce. I was very pleased that the cheese sauce was homemade rather than out of a can. They really do make everything homemade. My husband had the sage dressing. The sage dressing comes out in a patty, looking almost like a hamburger. They deep fry the dressing patties, I think. But it is very tasty dressing. The only thing I was disappointed in was their corn bread. I've definitely had better. It was just sort of flat and greasy-tasting. Still, overall, very good, homemade food and very friendly service.

This is one of the best family restaurants in the Kanawha valley! Come to this restaurant expecting that the food will come when it comes - they make everything to order. Nothing is frozen, and its all made in house. Even the dressings are made there. The food tastes great! If you're far from home - go to Diehl's for a home cooked meal. You won't be sorry.

This was not particularly good food. A mainstay of the community, yes. A great restaurant, no. We had chopped steak and onions, green beans, pinto beans, sage dressing, the tools, and cornbread. The cornbread was the best of the lot. One star for all the kitsch and one star for the food. The service was thud like. She was very busy. We won't go back again.

Simply the best diner in the country.......if you enjoy classic comfort food and dessert then you will enjoy the fact that all of the food is homemade. Start with a side salad or make a meal out of the best chef salad you will ever eat, did I tell you the salad dressings are homemade and my personal favorite Thousand Island is the best you will ever have. The roast beef and gravy along with the fried sage dressing and mashed potatoes will make your momma happy. Whether you like fish, steak, meatloaf, or a great sandwich with fries or onion rings that will bring back memories of the best meals you have ever had. Homemade pies are a must with the best coconut cream you will ever eat, my wife prefers the graham cracker pie. I frequently take out of town customers here and they then never let me take them anywhere else. My highest recommendation

Southern dining at it's finest. I have visited West Virginia on occasion and quickly learned that the culinary adventures in the area are not to be judged on their health benefits. Diehl's can not be called healthy by any stretch of the imagination. But for this city girl, it's an awesome opportunity to try real home cooked cookin'. I had the roast as well as the mac&cheese and mashed potatoes. I also went for the sweet tea because why not. (My friend asked if they had non-sweet tea and the waitress said no, they only had sweet and unsweet. Cute.) For dessert our waitress rattled off a list of pies and our hosts were desperate for the graham cracker pie. My rule is when there's a regional food that comes highly recommended by the locals you eat it! The pie at first bite was a little more gelatinous than creamy (think lemon meringue texture) but I found I couldn't stop eating the darn thing. I ended up taking half of my piece in a box and eating it just a couple hours later, as soon as I was physically able. If you are in Charleston and are looking to control your cholesterol, skip Diehl's. But if you can afford a calorie splurge, get yourself here.

Best Pie's in WV! Traditional WV home cooking in a family atmosphere. Their fried potatoes are beyond yummy. Pinto beans and cornbread are delish. The flounder sandwich is one of my personal favorites. The decor is full of the owner's collection of toys and hobbies. I would give it 5 stars but I think the prices are high for home cooking.

Our food was excellent. The baked steak and mashed potatoes are hard to beat. We also really enjoyed the sweet tea- and the to-go teas at the end of our meal!

Well...the food is decent, but not high on my list. First the price...my family of four including 2 children was $48!? I have had way better meals for less, way less and way better food for the same $$! Went this evening, and with my family and a friend. The waitress was not very helpful, and the meal I ordered "Baked Meatloaf"...she brought Roast Beef..something I hate...said we don't even have Baked Meatloaf..I replied it is on the menu..with a dumbfounded look..she said we are out of it. Just surprising to me...I guess. The baked steak was very dry..and the fried potatoes burnt...Our friend ordered a carrot cake, she said she was out of it..she returns a minute later with a slice of cake..which cost $5.89!!!!?? I think they need to look at pricing their menu differently, it is located in Nitro, not a big city. I am unsure why the prices are so high, and why people go there so often. Maybe it was a bad day..but we will return, just not any time soon.

Delicious home cooked food. Like the other reviews stated it is filled with racing-inspired-JR HOUSE PHOTOS-Cowboy/Western memorabillia but beyond the cheesey decor... you will find delicious food. I've tried a few items over the years, from the delicious Chicken Strip Salad to the Chicken Livers , but the one item that I always order (only ate the others due to this being sold out for the day) is the Roast Beef & Gravy (w/ mashed potatos , coleslaw and rolls!) Also, like mentioned before, the PIES are to die for. Especially the CoCoNut Cream! Don't go on Mondays...... they be CLOSED! ;) **ps, you can not see it from the interstate**

Visited family in WV at the beginning of September and made sure Diehl's was on my list. The family could not believe my boyfriend and I wanted Diehl's since it was such a locals kind of place - they wanted to take us out to more upscale restaurants but we wanted to get down and dirty with some southern food. My boyfriend had the roast beef and I ordered the pork chop - we couldn't forget about the iced tea either! Mashed potatoes, salad, the whole 9, everything was wonderful. We loved the family enviornment and the decor was spot on! Our table was a glass top over an engine! The walls are adorned with license plates and different styles of guns!!! You cannot go wrong! We cannot wait to go back to WV for another trip to Diehl's.

Great little home town place to eat at if your near Charleston, West Virginia. Handled a group of 25 within ten minutes and the food came out hot and at the same time so everyone could eat at the same time. Waitresses were friendly and helpful with food suggestions. Atmosphere was great with memorabilia the owner has collected since 1960 when it opened. So stop and eat a good meal. My only complaint was how hard it was to get to. You have to get off the interstate and go through a bunch of side roads to get to it even though you can see it from the interstate.

The roast beef & gravy dinner is out of this world.
