Delicious homemade slow food. Expect a wait that's worth it.

Simply Amazing. Had the Lamb Stew the meat was very tender. Owner is very friendly. Prices were very reasonable. I would go there just for the Mocha Coffee alone.
(5)Daniel Z.
Food was decent, I haven't been to Kenya so I cannot comment on the authenticity. My boyfriend had lived in Tanzania for 3 years and visited Kenya many times. He chatted with the owner in Swahili and learned that he is originally from Kenya. I'm surprised to see there are some Indian style food in Kenyan cuisine. I love Masala chai, so I wanted to try the masala tea here, and it was great! A well balanced flavor of milk, spices, black tea and ginger - the tea alone earned a 5 star! My Order: Masala Tea Organic Vegetables
(5)Amin A.
Pretty much the only Kenyan restaurant I have been to and has a wide variety of brewed teas and also a lot of exotic and delicious Currys they have on rice. Portions were a little on the small side, but compensates with taste. Appetizers are delicious as well. restaurant was clean and well kept.

Kenya Cafe is not an easy place to find. It's tucked in the back of a strip mall thats hidded behind a gas station near a busy intersection. There's plenty of parking in the shared lot. I arrived approxately 7p on Monday to a completly empty dining room. The waitress, or kitchen girl was instantly confused. I'll get to why I call her a kitchen girl in a moment. "Just sit anywhere" is weird when its just me and all the tables seat 7 people. I sat at the small table up front near the cash register. I told the waitress I wanted to order a few things since I like to review restaurants. Big Clue!!! I mentioned Yelp. The owner, a tall thin African fellow, never moved from his seat hidden behind the register, I heard him jabbering on the phone. Nice enough, the young lady gave me time to check out the menu unfortunately she was little help when I questioned about a dish. I ordered the Beef Samosas, $4.99 as an appetizer and Matoke with Goat $9 for my entree . When I asked if it comes with rice I'm told "no". I then asked for a side of rice which I'm told, they do not offer a side of rice. I mentioned that I would order a rice dish as a side with no concern over price. She suggested the Spicy Chicken $8 which I added to my order. She went off to the kitchen and I hear the beep beep beep of the microwave keypad. This is a bad sign! The appetizer came out fast but it was warm not hot, before I could try it the waitess returned with the Spicy Chicken rice dish. Obviously too fast becasue I didnt even try the appetizer yet. Ok, no worries, I'll just go with it! I then asked about my entree which also confused the kitchen heater upper waitres girl. "I thought you changed your mind" she said. With an empty joint how can you get confused? You are not stressing over cooking this stuff its obviously all pre cooked and reheated. You pile the stuff in a pretty bowl cram it in a zapper and blast it with EMF! (Electromotive Force). (Magnetron accelerated molecules) I'm not complaining, I'm just stating fact based on my experience. The samosas was phoned in, no flair or wow in fact kind of bland a doughy. You cant microwave pastry, thats day one stuff. The Spicy chicken was 2 roasted chicken legs on a overcooked bowl of rejeated rice covered with Birdseye fozen vegetables. When I finally got my goat (pun intended) it was all bones tough and well just barely palletable. Now the trappings of a good joint are here but you have to make an effort to cook. I could have bought a TV dinner and microwaved it. On the otherhand the prices are low so I guess you get what you pay for. After reading this I'd say go for yourself becasue the flavor profile is unique for Morgantown WV. Just dont expect a knock your sox off experience. Its poorly executed african fast food.
(2)Tanya Y.
I had the chicken curry and goat stew. The goat stew was amazing, but the chicken curry was somewhat bland. All in all, the food tasted great. It wasn't greasy and their homemade spicy sauce was a hit with my boyfriend that we purchased a bottle. Too bad there isn't a restaurant like this in Lancaster.
(4)Judy L.
It wasnt open even though the hours on Yelp and the website said they should have been.
(1)William S.
The tea was delicious, and the food was simply wonderful. The owner knows what he is doing and takes a considerable amount of pride in his work.
(5)Chad A.
AMAZING tea, tasty food and friendly staff. I had the red ginger tea and spicy chicken. The red ginger tea is simply amazing. The chicken was tender and the rice & vegetables had good texture. The menu said the chicken dish was "Very hot and spicy", but it wasn't super spicy, but it had really good flavor.
(5)Alan J.
We rolled into town and went to the Kenyan based on the high yelp rating and because it sounded different and we like that. I had the beef Stew with kale and rice. It was excellent. It is a "dry stew" if that makes sense. The kale was a well prepared dish that Beth and I both liked. Beth ordered the curry chicken which was quite good. Both dishes were spicy but not hot spicy. The atmosphere is casual. We were the only diners on this Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. The TV was playing so we put it on mute, leaving the room very quiet and lacking something. So we played pandora on the iPad. Wifi is free and works well. Service was prompt, courteous and friendly. The decore was nice and interesting. It fits the theme. Beth asked for a recommendation on the tea and the server brought her three samples. They were all quite good so we both made a selection and they went well with the dinners.
(4)Amanda B.
We love everything about this place! The food is very flavorful, and I always leave with food leftover. The service is amazing! This evening was pretty busy, but Dennis, the owner, makes sure that your order is exact and serves it himself.
(5)Jessica S.
I love it here, the curries and stews are unique. And the hot sauce is amazing! You should get a hot tea while you are there, because it's a nice pairing with all of their food.
(4)Jon S.
The environment is quiet and homely. The food is genuinely Kenyan, and I think it's all organic. This is one if my few favorite places in Morgantown.
(5)Via M.
Well worth it! Authentic atmosphere. Authentic cuisine. Delectable, delightful, and down right delicious! The curry chicken, plantains, beef samosas, and beef stew will have you "YELPing"! The hot sauce tops it off!
(5)Dave W.
Very fresh and clean eating for a cheap price. Hidden gem in Suncrest neighborhood. Most entrees are served with organic vegetables and meats. Organic vegetables are a nice choice for a light meal. Special in house hot sauce is a most. Also, worth trying the vegetarian samosa.
(4)Rebecca R.
If you've never been: order at the counter, sit anywhere and they'll bring out your food, then pay at the counter when you're done. The masala tea is amazing, the mandazi are SO yummy (not overly sweet and perfectly fried), and everything I've tried is great. I think the spicy chicken is my favorite. I always use their homemade hot sauce when I get the kale or the rice, just to spice it up and give it some kick. You can also buy bottles of their hot sauce, which I highly recommend doing!! Also, chat with Denis (the owner) if you get the chance; he's a really cool and interesting guy.
(5)Patty C.
The best coffee . My goat stew was ok . The owner was a nice guy . The place was a big hit with us ,
(4)John W.
Food here is delicious, and the owner seems friendly and gives you enough space to eat. I would definitely go back here. As an added bonus, nearly everything on the menu is gluten-free and dairy-free, and the owner seems somewhat willing to answer questions about it. There's free wireless, too, so it seems like an excellent place to go get work done. On the other hand, I was disappointed that the downtown location (which doesn't seem to have a phone number or show up on Google Maps?) was closed today during the snow. I actually called the number on the website (the Evansdale location, I think?) before I went, but no one answered -- and of course there was no voicemail. Walked all the way over to the 2000 University location in the snow, perhaps stupidly, and found it to have a temporarily closed sign on the door. Nearly starved, no fun. Caution: I've heard from multiple sources that if you're a young woman, you shouldn't try to work here. The owner is nice, but maybe a little too nice. Flavor and portion size gets five stars. Annoying walk over in the snow and worrisome rumors drop it down two stars. Good gluten-free/dairy-free options and wireless push it back up one star, since that's the primary method by which I assign ratings.
(4)HaileyandBen H.
We get that this is in West Virginia, and your only option if you crave this type of cuisine. That being said, compared to other African restaurants in larger cities the taste is acceptable but the prices are ridiculous.
(2)Justin L.
My favorite Morgantown restaurant. The stews, especially the lamb stew, are excellent.
(5)Sam M.
We caught the end of the World Cup here while hanging out with the cool owner. Girl behind the counter was friendly and helped us decide what to order. The food came out fast and performed as advertised! The samosas were yummy. Unfortunately not from the area or I'd eat here again. Great vegetarian and vegan options.
(5)Teresa P.
Well I must say , this was the most amazing restaurant I have ever been to. There were four of us from all parts of the country in town to do a job and we all eat pretty healthy so we embark on this café. The lamb stew and the goat stew were amazing and I am a vegan and The owner custom-built a dish for me, Which was the Matoke, but yet he embellished it just for me. I had the millet tea, and we had be hot coffee cocoa drinks which we all passed around, and we also ordered the soya drink as well, it was all very very good. If you keep an open mind when you go here and you order a little bit of everything I guarantee you will not be disappointed. I read here there was a wait for the food however we were there on a Monday evening and it was all served pretty fast. Don't let the fact that it may look empty fool you, as it will fill up quickly. We all plan to make this a regular stop while in West Virginia. We also begged the owner to open up more of these cafés in Colorado and New York.
(5)Alvin J.
I've been here several times over the last 2 years since it has opened. The owner, Dennis, is very nice and when it isn't too busy he'll even sit down and chat with customers. The food is definitely tasty. I have tried probably all the stews, chicken, beef, lamb, and goat, and I think they are all good but I like lamb the most. Also, if you go you must try the teas, Dennis is more than happy to pour you a few samples so that you can choose the one you like the best. I hadn't been there in about 2-3 months but just went there for lunch today and I am glad to see the improvements Dennis made to the decorations. Before it was just white walls, now it has more colors and Kenyan fabrics on the walls giving it a more cultural feel. I would definitely recommend it and will continue to frequent it.
(4)Matt S.
I went here just before close on a weeknight. It was near my hotel so I figured what the hell. All the menu items seem unappetizing. Turns out this place is amazing. I went with 2 other people and we all loved what we got. Check this place out ASAP!
(5)Samuel C.
This is my first time eating here. My cousin find a restaurant views from this place and heard it was good. This restaurant is small and fancy. I like the pictures they hang on the wall. The staff are nice and friendly. I like chicken and lamb curry. I like the bread also. Also free wi-fi. There's a code on the back wall with number to sign in.
(5)Krista B.
I came here while visiting a friend going to WVU. They raved about the place and couldnt wait to try it for myself. I had their Ugali with Eggs and Kale. I was a little weary since I havent had African-ethnic-type food before, but it was delicious! Just the right blend of spices and the flavor was amazing! I also tried the lamb stew my friends got but wasnt a huge fan of that psrticular blend of spices. I also sampled their Masala tea- way way too spicy for my liking, but I am more of a coffee fan. I did have a cup of their Kenyan Arabica coffee and it was very good! The ordering is a bit weird, and the food took a little while to come out, but its prepared fresh so the wait is worth it! (or maybe it seemed like a while since we were hungry?) I would definitely recommend if you're looking to try something new!
(5)Sherry M.
Plantains as an app were to DIE FOR. So good and plenty to share. Had the goat stew as a meal. Meat was very tender. Not too thrilled with the location or the decor/surroundings of the place. Needs to be "lightened" up some. But the food is awesome.
(4)chan l.
The Wild Kenyan Hot Sauce is awesome. Easy relaxed place with good teas. Owner is friendly and engaging. Food was ok, but the hot sauce really was the highlight. Good thing they sell it in a bottle.
(4)Filipe F.
Great Veggie food, healthy and sturdy meal. Awesome Masala Tea. The price is great!
(5)Priya W.
First off....OMG their tea is amazing! I haven't gotten anything off the menu that I didn't like. Portions are large-ish. You can share an entree for lunch if you get an appetizer. Their kale is really delish, I would recommend it! It's a sit down place but the atmosphere is ehhhh. The owner is very friendly!!!
(5)Laura W.
Who would have expected to find a Kenyan place in Morgantown?! If it wasn't for Yelp we certainly wouldn't have come across the place while driving through, and that would have been a shame. I've never had Kenyan food so really have no basis for comparison, but I thought everything was fantastic. My vegetarian boyfriend and I both had plenty to chose from on the menu and enjoyed every bite. The hot sauce (made in the cafe) really makes the dishes; don't hesitate to try it. The owner (a very, very friendly, personable, and accommodating man) is working on getting the proper labeling to sell it by the bottle. I will be closely watching the website so I can order some when he possible. The cafe is very cozy with standard and high-top tables as well as some lounge-y couches. The free Wi-fi must be nice for students, especially as the owner doesn't seem inclined to rush people out. Fabulous coffee, similar to the thick Turkish style, and delicious sweet red tea. I wish I hadn't been so full (had to box up the rest of my goat stew and kale) so I could have tasted the plantains with ice cream. I also really wish I lived closer! Will definitely go back if I find myself in Morgantown again.
(5)Daleen B.
A disclaimer: Denis and I go to the Kingdom Hall together, so while we are not blood relatives, we're still like family. That being said, his food is delicious--I love the chicken stew, curry chicken, and mandazi, of course! And as a tea connoisseur, his spiced teas are delicious. This is the only Kenyan place I know of for miles and miles and it's a treat to have yet another variety of food in our small college town. (Service can be a little slow, because he is the owner and chef, but it's well worth the wait. Bring a deck of cards or reading material, or catch up on your long overdue thank-you cards.)
(5)Crystal P.
After a long trip of 300+ miles, a music festival and living in a tent for 4 days - we could not wait for a good hearty meal on our way back to the east coast. We were super stoked when we found Kenyan Cafe on yelp the night before and pretty much planned our day around it. (Indulge much?!?) All and all, the food was great, the service was very nice and we enjoyed our visit. My dining partner felt his meal was a bit undercooked (after tasting, the potatoes and veggies were a bit hard and indeed were undercooked) and he wasn't as hyped up as he wanted to be about his meal. I ordered the vegetarian samosa appetizer, rice and tortillas and put it all together as a meal with a ton of their hot sauce and loved it. I am still craving their hot sauce and should have bought a bottle (BUY A BOTTLE BEFORE YOU GO) It could have been better, but for the area and for the flavor it was definitely good. And the service was very nice. Except for the woman, loudly on her cell phone at the table next to us for the entire 50 minutes we were there. Really? Take a break, take a load off. Enjoy the moment. (i.e, kindly hush up...)
(4)Nicole G.
My favorite place I take out of town friends for dinner-- I recommend it to everyone!
(5)Michelle N.
My friend that lives here raves about this place all the time, and I finally got to check it out earlier this year. LOVE! I've never tried Kenyan food before but it has a slight resemblance to Indian food. I had the peanut and vegetables dish and have dreamt about it every day since. They also have some very tasty samosas. The little cafe is also very cozy - there is a variety of seats in the dining area - low tables and high tops, reading material, and Kenyan-inspired art. And of course there's a TV in the corner to watch WVU sports :P I came back again just last month and it was everything I remembered it to be. The owner is very friendly and actually takes your order and/or brings out your food. After chatting with him and begging him for the recipe (since I am not local enough to eat here often) he told me he's working on selling a spice mix and that he'd whip up a batch for me. Perfect! The ordering is a bit weird though. You order, then go sit, but you don't pay until you are done. This makes it easy for people to skip out on the bill or forget to pay for something but thankfully I haven't witness this happen. Other notes: free wifi, you may have to wait awhile for your food but worth it, also offer coffee and tea, and the plantains w/ ice cream is awesome.
(5)Kent H.
Very good food in a cool and laid back atmosphere. I had the Kenyan stew with chicken and kale and it was quite nice. The samosas are good as well, but pretty spicy as opposed to the stew which wasn't spicy at all. The food is a little similar to Indian, but has a unique flavor all its own. As another reviewer commented: try the teas, especially the Ginger or Masala, both are excellent and they will give you a free sample. All in all a very nice dining experience and something off the beaten path.
(4)Chanel W.
Their tea is absolutely delicious! The friendly staff let me sample each one while I decided what dish I wanted from the menu. The hot sauce is authentic and delicious, but spicy so be careful if you don't do spicy well.
(4)Lauren B.
Great spot to stop for a quick lunch while traveling through. Lamb Stew was delicious and awesome chai tea varieties. Owner was very pleasant. Highly recommend!
(4)Ed C.
Enjoy a great evening with my friend and we decided to grab a bite to eat at one of our favorite places. I have never had any problems there and always enjoy the Great food and excellent atmosphere. The teas and breads are my favorite. However on this visit I felt as if I did something wrong. I found what looked like a hair in my food and when I showed it to the owner it seemed as he didn't believe me and asked me what I wanted him to do about it. I kindly asked to have another dish made which he complied. I just felt like that situation could have been handled a little differently. Definitely will go back.
(3)valerie w.
Delicious food. Fabuous vegetarian options! Free wifi. The tea is also amazing. When you walk in, they will let you sample the different types before you order.
(5)Hesham A.
This place is getting pretty popular these days. They have delicious food and the owner is very nice and personable. It's nice to have some ethnic food in town. Try the stews, they're great. Also recommend the spicy chicken dish, and the Briani. Their hot teas are delicious too. Support this local establishment!
(5)Lindsay A.
The food here is great, but it's very odd. Every time I've walked in there's nobody else there and it takes a while for the waiters to come grab your order. Try the chicken curry and pour their hot sauce all over it (as long as you love the spicy things at the spicy places). Yum-overall good and very very casual.
(3)Josh A.
Recently had lunch at the Kenyan Cafe - I had always meant to go, but this was my first time. Too bad I waited so long - this was just about the best culinary experience I've had in Morgantown. The owner/manager is extremely friendly and helpful - the food was taking a while, so he brought out a free dish to keep our kids happy. Our dishes - chicken stew and goat with plantains - were superb - real, vivid flavors, healthy, very tasty; the sides of kale and cabbage were especially good. The Kenyan teas were also a nice change from the usual beverage options. Only downside - it was slooow...however, we were there on a Sunday afternoon, so they were not running at full speed. I would recommend going if you have some time to spare, but not if you're in a rush. All in all, I have a new favorite restaurant in Morgantown - finally a place that takes its food seriously and offers some real flavor!
(5)Chris P.
We had a lunch date with chicken curry, chicken stew and beef samosas, all perfectly prepared. If you're into spicy, be sure to try their Kenyan Cafe hot sauce. All of the staff were exceptionally friendly, inviting us to sample their teas (Red tea is super good). Atmosphere is laid back and relaxing. One of the best restaurants Morgantown has to offer!
(5)Ben V.
Stopped into this place tonight based on Yelp reviews and must say I was not let down. I had the goat stew and eat ever last morsel. I also walked out having bought a bottle of the Kenyan hot sauce that was quite excellent. I will most certainly be back next time I visit Morgantown.
(5)Sher Y.
Glad morgantown is getting more and more diverse in food
(5)Paul H.
As of 2015/7, they say they've been closed since 2014/10 and might reopen in 2016. Sad that they're not open today - I would have eaten there! Below is my review from 2010: Excellent food. I don't live in Morgantown, but now that I've discovered this restaurant, any time I'm near Morgantown and looking for dinner, this will be my top choice! I ate here a couple days ago, with friends. They tried the chicken and goat dishes, and matoke (plantains & vegetables) and liked them a lot. My favorite dish was the mixed vegetables (green Beans, carrots, potatoes, and corn fried with onions and spices). The sauces were very flavorful but not over-rich (as some Indian food can be, say). For extra zing, you can sprinkle on some hot sauce in a bottle on the table. Their schedule says they're open late.
(5)Aaron S.
Every time I come here Denis is always welcoming with a smile on his face. The food is consistently outstanding with a LOT of vegan/vegetarian options. My favorite dish is the Peanuts with Organic Vegetables. Be sure to try the Kenyan Hot Sauce made on site by Denis himself. It is especially black peppery, but with a bite that can come on out of nowhere. The Kenyan Cafe is one of my favorite spots in town and I definitely recommend it!
(5)Vicki C.
This is one of my favorite restaurants! The food is organic, fresh and tasty. The menu clearly describes the dishes, so nobody should be afraid to go for the first time.
(4)T L.
If you have a coupon that states Kenyan Cafe closes at 11 PM, please note that the new/actual closing time is 10 PM per the owner! You must try the beef samosas. The filling is well-seasoned and the wrapper has a good crispy texture. I could eat this every day. I'm salivating right now as I think back on eating it. O. M. G. We tried the chicken stew and spicy chicken. Both dishes came with a red-colored rice portion. The rice was moist and not dry at all. For the stew, you can get cabbage or kale mixed into it. I chose cabbage. Great stuff. As for the spicy chicken, wow. I've met my match in terms of spiciness. My mentality to spicy is to bring it on; this was "death spicy" for me while my boyfriend was munching along as if he was eating mild. While the chicken wasn't my favorite, I liked the mixed vegetables that came on the side. Free wifi inside!
(4)Kyle H.
Excellent food, great staff, enjoyable atmosphere. Get the Millet Drink... Its my FAVE!
(5)Adam F.
stopped here on my way to Baltimore. i was happily surprised to find this on my way through town. it was nice (although the TV was taken over by a group of people who wanted to watch football, and at a loud volume). I got the Matoke with beans, rice, and a really good coffee. The Matoke was good, if turmeric heavy.
(5)Alex G.
The food is fantastic, the staff are friendly, and the seating is cozy. Try some of their delicious teas!
(5)Lilyan T.
This place is incredible! Morgantown is in need of new flavor and to break away of the chain restaurants and this place does just that! The curry chicken and beef stew with rice and kale are my favorites. Pretty right on with the prices and really good tea as well.
(5)Hitoshi K.
If you like exotic or new foods, this place is a must. Not just the food, but also the beverages.
(5)Andrew F.
Went here for dinner tonight and ordered the briani beef entre. Very flavorful and filling, I did the take-out routine. Went in and I was the only person in there. Will definitely go back and I can't wait to try some other menu items. Recommended. Staff were very friendly.
(3)Joseph S.
This is the first place I ever tried Kenyan food, so I'm a bit biased. However, the food is great, and the owner is very personable. While service can be a bit slow, it's worth the wait.
(4)Edward M.
Wanted an adventure while in town. Had been scoping yelp for reviews of new and different foods from what we have at home. Since neither of us had ever had Kenyan food before we thought we would give it a try. This is a nice small homey place with a very personable owner who made it a point to talk to everyone in the place. The staff was very friendly and helpful telling us about their favorite dishes and helping us order. We had the beef samosas for a start. Very good, spicy and crunchy. We also ordered two of the house teas, The red is a rooibos tea which we have already tried and the masala was the best chai tea I have ever had-very peppery. We got the chicken stew and goat stew with the chapatti and kale for the side dish. We had never had goat before and it was an experience. Not bad. Be sure and try the sauce made on the premises...spicy and vinegary...took a bottle home with us. Would recommend for the adventurous at heart.
(3)Katie H.
Just as awesome as everyone says, an adorable cafe with fabulous everything. Since no one really mentions the price, vegetarian dishes averaged 8.99 and meat 10.99. The teas and hot chocolate hovered at 3.00, beyond reasonable for the quality of the food.
(5)Daniel D.
This is something different from a town that is getting more and more diverse. I was able to have a great conversation with the chef/owner and he is from Kenya and has great passion. Try all the teas and coffee that are there and try every type of food. Just be careful a good bit of the food is spicy but fantastic.
(4)quynh l.
Dennis the owner, is all kinds of wonderful. The food is made from real identifiable, mostly organic ingredients and it's tasty. The tea blends are flavorful and delicious. A good place to hang out and study. You can stay all day if you want. There is a room with a table in the back and you can ask to go there to study. Free Wifi. Although, bring a sweater because the AC is high at times. It is good to have some time though because food can be slow coming. It really depends on how much help they have. Do keep in mind it's not slapped together on a grill either.
(4)Aggie P.
The rice and beans meal sounds simple, but it's sooo addicting! Service is wonderful and always friendly. Beautiful decor and free wi-fi make it for a nice spot to get some work done, too.
(5)Catherine M.
Excellent. Good food. Great, personable service. I wasn't sure what I would think of Kenyan food but was pleased to discover it was spicy without being hot.
(5)D G.
We needed take-out food. While they didn't deliver to our remote outskirt location, we were glad to have gone to pick it up. Delicious! The vegetarians and the meat-eaters were happy. Good chicken curry...yummy peanuts with veggies. Cocoa was so-so. One of the best parts--gluten free for almost all dishes. Hooray for Kenyan Cafe!!
