Since we checked in on a weekday, the restaurant was not available to us to try, but I do appreciate the inn portion. The front desk person was very courteous and helpful and also didn't mind chatting with us about the area. We were invited to just go in and look at rooms to see which one we would like the best. We picked one on the second floor that had a bed that was relatively low (one room had a bed you might need a step stool to get into) and a small seating area with two wingback chairs. The bathroom was kind of small, but well stocked with everything we needed. There was wi-fi and a tv in the room. There is also a complimentary bottle of spring water in the room. It could very well just be tap water, but the presentation in a pretty blue glass bottle with a cork stopper made it feel special. I am not an expert on antiques, but aside from the A/C, TV, and phone, everything in the room was comfortably old, which makes it feel like home...or a posh guest room at Great Aunt Mildred's house. The bed was covered in a lovely embroidered quilt and had two extra pillows for lounging. All in all, I really enjoyed my stay!

Such a beautiful little place for brunch! Thought the food was really great & exploring afterwards is even better! Day was made when a 95 year old man walked in dressed to the nines in his blue seersucker suit. There's a little shack out back, go in it for a creepy surprise ;-)

Great meal and service. Try the blueberry dessert. The prime rib and rainbow trout were both very tasty. The price was very reasonable.

We stayed at the historic General Lewis Inn and found it to be quaint. The staff was helpful however there were very few amenities during the week and we had to go elsewhere for basic services. Upon check-out they could not split our three bills from the person making the reservations. Management stated that it was their well thought out choice to actually charge your credit card immediately upon making the reservation. Since the card was charged two months ago when he made the reservation the other two couples had to pay our friend rather than the Inn. We told the owner while their policy might be good for the owner it was very inconvenient for the consumer. We will not return to the General Lewis the next time we come to the area and do not recommend the Inn.

As you walk in to the inn the restaurant is to your left. There is no host you just kind of stand at the door and wait for someone to seat you. We ordered wine, waiter brought the wrong kind for my husband doesn't matter if you order red or white not to sound pretentious but they shouldn't be served in the same shaped glass. Wine selection is minimal along with menu items. The salads are ok but you only have two options for dressing ranch or a honey mustard vinegarette . I got the bourbon and peach glazed pork loin, the sauce was excellent the pork was very dry. My husband got the duck he said it was pretty good nothing spectacular. Dessert menu had four items on it i got the pecan pie quite possibly worst piece of pie I have ever ate. Not a place we will be going back too. If you are looking for similar food go to food and friends you cant go wrong.

This is a great find in West Virginia and a wonderful alternative to the Greenbrier being only a few minutes down the road. The hotel has very old charm with unique rooms and antique (looking at least) furnishings that were in good shape. They offered a good rate with a wonderfully friendly staff during my off-season one night stay. Couples beware, older buildings lend themselves to thin walls. Ate dinner and breakfast at their fantastic restaurant and I absolutely loved both delicious southern meals.

Very good brunch. Stopped here on a trip. I got some sort of hash that was very good. Hubs got waffles and eggs. Hope to go back as I prefer this to chains.

The good news: beautiful building, classy interior, warm and inviting staff (mostly), and interesting history The bad news: I ordered a filet mignon, assuming that the high price meant it would be above average. It wasn't. It was thin, overcooked, and dry. If I had ordered a cheap average steak, I suppose it wouldn't have been a bad deal, but this was supposed to be FILET MIGNON. It was terrible for the price. When I politely confronted the server about it, he defended it as the way they have prepared filet mignon for a long time. That's a real tragedy. It was basically an overpriced version of something I could have gotten at a buffet. I felt ashamed to have given them money for it. I'm usually pretty easygoing with food. This steak was just that bad, I had to tell someone. Two stars, only because the building is gorgeous.

Never tried The Greenbrier restaurant(s), but would have to be the best of the best to beat the General Lewis. Kinda reminds me of the restaurants one would find in Williamsburg, Va. The Inn is for sale & hope who ever buys it will keep this fine dinning tradition intact.

Such a historic building. The fireplace in the living room made for a great place to sit. They also let us use the dinning room to conduct our meeting. However, when we first arrived the inn keeper wasn't aware of some of the request we made when booking and one of our part requested a first floor room but didn't get it. Bed was comfortable and the in is very inviting, like being at grandmas. I will come back but not likely with a large party.

After a mishap at another local restaurant caused them to be unable to accommodate a large wedding party (see my other reviews), 12 of us came to the General Lewis Inn for dinner on a Friday evening. It was definitely a busy night, but with about 30 minutes notice they were able to seat all of us in the main dining room. The space is gorgeous and traditional, with patterned cloth napkins and exposed beams - but authentically antique, not a hokey put-on. The food is SPECTACULAR: seriously, the best fried chicken I've ever had, and every other thing I sampled (trout, french onion soup, prime rib, etc) from others' plates was stellar. Given the size of our party and the trouble we'd already been put through that evening (something that was not in ANY WAY our fault) they threw in a couple of bottles of wine gratis for the table, our pick of anything off the wine list. The waiters were jovial and competent, and the lady in charge, who looks like someone's sweet old grandmother, came out to welcome us personally and thank us for coming. A genuinely five-star experience in the TRUE spirit of Southern charm and hospitality. My only complaint was there were limited options for the vegetarians among us - salads, apps, and one pasta option really rounded it out. But the VERY finicky kids ate fine and everyone was able to find something delicious to eat. Vegetarianism just isn't part of the "traditional" Southern palate. I would HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend the General Lewis Inn to anyone passing through!

After finding dining options rather limited in White Sulphur Springs rather limited (aside from the Greenbrier), my husband Rick and I decided to head back to Lewisburg. We'd heard great things about the General Lewis Inn and gave it a try. We both can safely say that this was the best dining experience on our whole WV trip. The General Lewis Inn does Southern cooking right, and believe me, as Meg H. says in her review, it's no hokey put on. The atmosphere here is just right for a wonderful dinner. I hadn't had any good seafood lately, so I tried the trout. Mine was done to perfection. My vegetables definitely were were fresh and not frozen or out of a can. As for Rick, he went for the steak. He gave me a taste and believe me, I hadn't tasted a steak like that since the last time I was in Kansas City. If we're ever back in Lewisburg, we''ll make a meal and a stay at the General Lewis Inn a priority.

Have always wanted to stay here but I treat myself each year for 20 years to a birthday lunch. Great place and great food

Hmmmm...I found the reviews here a bit tough on this place. I really liked it for breakfast. Though I didn't stay here I think the character of the place is just so unique. The walls are filled with some much history...either in the form of paintings, photos, or actual farm implements this place is a one of a kind. Breakfast was good and hardy and affordable. Located up the hill from main street it is close to everything. It is said there are rooms that have ghosts that haunt them and folks have a book they can write in their encounters in....ooohhhhh......scary!!!!!!!! *grin*

We recently returned to Lewisburg for a memorial service and spent two days at the General Lewis Inn. The staff was great and made us feel welcome from the start. Our room for the first night was cozy and comfortable. After a long and stressful day at the memorial service, it was just what we needed. Brunch the next morning was delicious. Coleman saw to our table and kept us supplied with coffee and anything else we needed. We wanted to change to a larger room with a sitting area for our second day so we could spend time with family in a quiet setting. The front desk took care of everything. Housekeeping moved our bags to the larger room while we were out. Our family came and we have a delightful visit. They loved the room and Inn. The collection of historical items and prints are amazing. Our last morning we had a delightful breakfast, and again, Coleman saw that we had everything we needed. Even though we have family in Ronceverte that we usually stay with, we will definitely will plan to stay here again,

Food 3.5, ambience 4.0 (rustic), service 4.0 = 3.65 (my formula). So 4 stars on the first visit. Since the General Lewis in sits on a portion of the site of the Battle of Lewisburg its decor is very appropriate, but I digress, this is about the food. We went here to have brunch before a wedding. Everyone had an omelet, save me, who went with the "Redneck Benedict". I am a fan of Eggs Benedict so why not try the Southern version. Different, good, but I probably would do again, solely because I am not sure how I feel about eggs and sausage gravy. I didn't taste the omelet, but my party was in the clean plate club and I didn't hear any complaints.

We did not stay at the Inn, but we did the Lewisburg Ghost Tour which starts from here. It cost $20 per person. It was a neat way to get people to pay for what really amounted to a history tour with a few spicy stories to keep you interested for two hours. I got some good exercise and was entertained so I feel it was worth it. But, once was enough.

Went back again, don't remember what I had for lunch, but the cobbler was excellent, and the friend I dragged there from Denver agreed with me on the cobbler love. They always have one, the type of fruit changes, order whatever kind they've got. I took a sip of the sweet tea, and I thought it had artificial sweetener in it although my friend thought it was good. So if you're sensitive to artificial sweeteners ask when you order.

My second time having lunch here. I can't seem to order anything but the Classic Ruben. The quality of the food is very good and consistent. The wait staff has that southern personality that makes you feel warm all over. Really enjoyed it.

Lunch is the most lackluster meal here, but it is still decent. It is mostly sandwiches, and they have a specialty quiche every day. Dinner is better, and breakfast is better than that. It is Southern style cooking, and the chef gets it right. It has a nice atmosphere for a romantic evening.

  • Kim H.

My husband and I stayed here two nights and ate dinner there once. The fried chicken was good and my husband's chicken dish was also good. The apple cobbler tasted like store bought....nothing spectacular. The breakfast was just okay. I've had worse but I've had alot better too. Okay, the only reason I will not stay here again is that the beds were like sleeping on the floor. I would not call these FIRM...but hard! We had to pile all the blankets in the room on the mattress in order to get a halfway good nights sleep. The inn is quaint looking and within walking distance of downtown which we liked.

My husband had business in nearby Union, WV last month, and we had dinner with several of his co-workers in this charming downtown inn. Although it was a week night, the small dining room was packed and our group seemed to be the only one without a reservation. The ambience was very "old South," the service was excellent and we all enjoyed our meals. Two of our party had pasta primavera and the other two had scallops with linguine in a cream sauce. I would definitely recommend this place for a nice, romantic dinner.
