Traveling to WV and the new river gorge bridge will bring you to lovely Fayetteville. We came early to try the restaurant and we're not disappointed. The chips and dip are excellent. The sandwiches are great with our table trying many with no disappointments. Upgrading to the loaded fries is worth it as we have never had fries with a pimento spread before. Yum. Ordered a caramel chocolate tart that was outstanding to round out the experience. Strongly recommend it but "shh" it's already popular. Don't tell anyone.

Sandwiches were amazing though they have a small kitchen so make sure you order appetizers or something to munch on while you wait on your food ( took us more than 30 minutes to get our food which seems long for sandwiches). I ordered the Fillmore with a side of the Lucy salad and it was spectacular. Their Parmesan fries are amazing so make sure r you order those!

Nice outdoor seating. We all ordered burgers of various kinds. All came out well. Good beer and wine selection. My parents did think the spice mix on the chips was too hot. Very accommodating of our young son. I'd definitely go again.

Niffy sandwich shop that is packed in the bottom of house. Feeling the need for something tasty and cooked for me, we stumbled into the SSS for a meal. The place it's tucked down some stairs to the basement floor, with a deck and patio attached. This place can get really crowded real fast once everyone is come back from there rafting/climbing/hiking excursions for the day. If there is a wait, you can grab a beer right inside at the hostess station and take to the patio to hang out while your number is called. Inside seating is pretty tiny and tight, but if the weather is nice the space is doubled with the outside deck. Now the sandwiches are pretty awesome. They are all named after presidents which is cool. I forgot who's I got, but it was the meatloaf sandwhich and it was freaking awesome. PBR's are the best bang for your $, unless you are craving craft beer then they have a good list. Check them out you will be pleasantly surprised.

Thank you for your awesomeness Secret Sandwich Society!! My hubby and I love this place! I ordered the salad with turkey on top..wow!! What an amazing salad! Yes, I will drive 45 minutes or longer just to eat it again!!! Bread, chips, pickles are all so yummy! Now my complaint...there is not one of these restaurants in Daniels, WV! keep up the good work!!

First and foremost -- absolutely excellent food! All of the sandwiches and burger, the chips, the fries, it's all so amazing and delicious. I tried a little bit of everything at the table, but what I specifically ordered was the McKinley. Get this, it's a meatloaf sandwich with chipotle-bacon jam and thousand island dressing all tied together with crispy onions on deliciously hearty, flavorful soft bread. The sandwich, I have to talk about it just a little more. You see, the meatloaf had a kick to it, and it was also not too thick and spongy like meatloaf tends to be. I'm not sure, but it tasted like it had been sliced off the loaf and then lightly pan-fried on the sides to give it a toasty little crisp around the edges to go with that firm but chewier meatloaf center that you'll recognize. To sum it up, it was a perfect meatloaf prepared as a sandwich meat with a perfect technique. I was also worried that the thousand island would overpower the chipotle-bacon jam. But it didn't, they actually balanced each other out perfectly, and I could taste the unique flavor variations within both. The chips must be made in-house, and they're darn good. But the fries are even better. Crispy full of flavor -- smoked paprika perhaps? SSS also makes its own ketchup, which is more watery than you're used to, but it taste damn good. I mean, it tastes just like ketchup, but with a freshness punch! So why only three stars? Well, mainly because the atmosphere itself sucks. First, it's tucked away on a hill behind the gas station just off Route 19, whereas most of the other Fayetteville hot spots for food are located downtown closer to the courthouse in the more quaint part of town. Still, the little upstairs part of the house where SSS resides does have character, but it doesn't have much parking. And then you meander around the front, down some stone steps by a door to some other business or residence and then around the corner into SSS. Now, they have a deck, on which we were seated first. It was a chilly day, and they were like, but the heated deck is actually warmer! Stepping out on the deck, it was true. Why the outside is warmer than the inside? Dunno. The only problem is they sat us right under the clanking source of that deck heat -- a ridiculously old fan-driven heating system that made it impossible to hear the person across the table speak. And although the waist up was warm, there was nothing heating closer to the floor, so the chairs were super cold on the bum, and our toes were freezing within minutes. It didn't take long to move inside, where at least the temperature was the same on all levels and there wasn't quite as much noise. But even being warm can't distract me from the fact that SSS lacks a fountain soda machine. Seriously? Don't even bother restauranting without one! The Coca-Cola, even the iced tea, it's all served in aluminum cans and plastic bottles. I didn't bother asking (because I'm pretty sure I know the answer), but I bet refills aren't free. Finally, this place was pretty darn slow, even though it wasn't busy the day we were there. Probably 25% of the place was full, and keep in mind they are making SANDWICHES here. Like, you know, what you make in your kitchen in five minutes. But it took nearly 25 minutes to get our sandwiches. Maybe things would've moved a little faster had one of the guys not just been chilling by the tap drinking beer (I know he was an employee because he had one of those brown "Shhh..." shirts on.) Oh, and one more tip that also contributed to a lower rating despite some amazing food -- I had to remind the server TWICE to include the Yelp check-in deal on the bill, and then when he finally said he would do it, he had no idea how to do it and had to go find another employee to help him (which added to the already longer-than-expected time we spent there). Secret Sandwich Society is a great concept with a varied, delicious menu. But it's lacking a few of those polished, professional touches that would make it a 4- or 5-star joint hands down!

We made a day trip down to hike around the New River Gorge and stopped here for lunch. I was particularly excited to try it because there were multiple good vegetarian options (sometimes veggie sandwiches are so strange), and there were lots of good meat options, too. I ordered the Garfield (fried eggplant, marinara, and provolone), and it was great. Actually everything--from the chips to the pickle to the ginger ale--was great. It was also perfectly portioned: it didn't weigh me down on the post-lunch hike. It was a long wait for sandwiches (30 minutes maybe?). We hit them at lunch time, and there were lots of people, but honestly I don't mind waiting longer for good food. It does bother me that their "historic" stairs are so inaccessible. I saw multiple people struggling to get up and down them, but maybe there's an accessible entrance that we didn't see?

This is an awesome place! It has everything you want from a restaurant.. Great food, great hosts, great music.. We sat on the deck and it was amazing because there was live music and the weather was awesome.. Order burger and you won't be disappointed! Their wild rice soup is also great and their Martha Salad!

This place is exactly what a small, independent, local business should be, in my opinion. The staff was quick, friendly, and helpful. The location is historic chic. I love to see old buildings repurposed rather than bulldozed to make room for another boring square box business. The drink selection was wonderful. I like that they have Hansen's natural sodas made with real sugar and all-natural ingredients. The beer selection was not huge, but as big as you can expect from a place this size. The quality was through the roof though. From authentic Heffeweissen imported from Germany (one of my favs) to local brews and plenty of great variety in between. Now for the main attraction: the sandwiches! I got The Jefferson and my girlfriend ordered a Washington. Hers was a beautiful flavor symphony of fresh ham, crisp green apple slices, and smoked white cheddar cheese. Mine was a roast beef with sliced lettuce, bright red tomatoes, and Swiss (I think) cheese. The real star of the Jefferson was the homemade horseradish mayo = delicious! Both were served on a nice, crisp French baguette, which is sadly a rare find in the American sandwich market. She said hers was probably the best sandwich she had ever had... And I might agree! The homemade chips on the side were a nice touch. They were thick cut and lightly salted. (We ordered a side of homemade French onion dip just for gigs. Thumbs up!) It's a nice way to bring your taste buds back down to reality before indulging in more fantastic flavors. The homemade pickle was good too. I appreciate the dill/sweet hybrid flavor. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and join the Secret Sandwich Society. You won't regret it!

Love this place. Unique sandwiches, good beer, and they make their own ketchup and pickles! The only downside to the place is that it can be so busy, service can be a bit slow. But if you're in the mood for chillin on their back deck and enjoying your meal, it's one of the best places in Fayetteville.

What an unexpected delight. We stopped in for a mid afternoon meal. The host seated us quickly. The restaurant was very busy, but someone took our drink order and let us know that there would be a wait. Our waiter was very courteous and personable. The food was gourmet. We shared a turkey sandwich with peach jam on a baguette. Best turkey sandwich ever. My husband had roasted red pepper and tomato bisque freshly made that was perfect. I had a salad made with spinach, bleu cheese, spiced cashews, and green goddess dressing. It was superb. They also had an extensive beer selection.

First off you have to find it. Although it's just off, us 19 the place is on side street marked by a mysterious three branch sculpture. Probably a coincidence. This place is really really good. The wait staff will be glad to help with suggestions. The menu is nice on variety and better with almost everything is made in the place. Their outside seated is actually enclosed porch wuth heat and zippered Windows. Inside is kinda cozy. Two fantastic options are jefferson and Polk. Since it was Mac&cheese Monday I subbed that for chips and shared some pimento cheese fries (fresh cut fries and homemade cheese). The Polk was prefect. Chicken cooked perfectly and the chipotle bacon jam was placed on bread that was like air. Jefferson was shaved beef, crispy bacon pieces and lightly flavored horseradish mayo. These are serious sandwiches, you may need a box. And just in case you have room, key lime pie! Start with cashew Graham cracker crust and there may be a little extra lime juice, but I don't think you'll care.

Enough said! This eating establishing is so good it is a secret!! Split a sandwich and salad paired with a pint of local flavor. Everything was delicious and I wish I could be back here tomorrow!!! This service is fabulous and the seating is comfy! Filled up very quick on Saturday lunch time so come earlyish!

My wife and I both had the Jefferson sandwich which was delicious. The combination of beef and horseradish was just right. I had the home chips and added some French onion dip which was the perfect accompaniment to great chips. My wife chose to substitute a salad for chips with a homemade balsamic dressing. The salad greens were fresh and the veggies were cut just the right size. My wife said the dressing was very tasty. On the downside there's no fountain drinks available just cans and bottles. The wait staff could use some improvement. I saw our food ready on the counter and it sat there a bit. Instead of coming to the table with our bill our waiter stood behind the counter drinking Red Bull. We finally got up and went to the counter to get checked out. All in all great food . Just need to work on a few issues.

This is long overdue, but these guys are amazing! Great beer, amazing appetizers, and the sandwiches are literally to die for. Almost everything is homemade or local and reasonable prices. If you ever find yourself in this little jem of a town, this place is a must try. Sometimes there's a bit of a wait, but there's a reason for it. A+ on the local area.

Delightful atmosphere welcoming service. And local draft beer absolutely delicious. I shared the Lucy salad and the Jefferson sandwich and both were excellent and more than adequateThe Lucy salad had.spicy nuts yum! The chips were a wonderful experience. If I am ever back in this area again secret sandwich society is the place I am headed for first.

Oh my...I was not as impressed as it looks like everyone else. The wait was half hour for sandwiches!! Then a long wait for food.I regret that I didn't order a burger...I had the Truman as it had good ratings and apparently a best seller.I thought it was rather boring! The menu is interesting with creative names & choices, service was friendly even though slow. They do a lot of carryout.Oh and I thought the prices were steep but it works for them and not much competition around there!! Pimento cheese fries are tasty and memorable!

Got the cold orzo salad- very light and fresh and the eggplant sandwich which was really good! Great beer selection and good vibe. I was a little hungry after so I should have tried some fries or salad but would def go back!

Funky sandwich joint. Sandwiches are named after US presidents. Example: the washington is ham, artisan mayo, green apples. Great burgers too. There is alot of thought that goes into this menu to make it original. Good beer selection too. One of the places that keeps fayetteville on the map as a good eating and drinking town.

Amazing food all around! Great service and you can tell everything is made in house. I would recommend this place to anyone.

Perfect lunch stop, unique combinations on the menu. The home run for me was their seasonings. From the fries to the sauces to the salads and burgers, everything had a touch of something more... More than salt and pepper. They took the time to play with seasoning combos to give whatever we ordered added zip. This stop is very convenient to route 19 and a good choice if you need sustenance before or after your local excursion. This place is popular, so you may incur a wait. Everyone is friendly. We were greated by more than one person when we walked through the door. Our waiter engaged in conversation that did not seen forced or bothersome. It was a very pleasant time.

Have you ever seen a gerbil in one of those exercise cage wheels? That was my first thought after being seated and waiting 15 mins. for someone to take our drink/food order. Lotsa staff, but most were either mgrs., carry out staff, greeter. Everybody running around with nothing being accomplished! After this 15 min. wait, my wife said "let's go!" I said "no, I didn't drive 30+ miles over some pretty bad mountain roads to just leave." I went to the greeter & asked "is there anyone assigned to our table?" She said yes, but he's busy. I'll be right there to take your order. If you don't want a sandwich, your other choices are soup or salad. I had the 'Hoover' ( deep fried breaded chicken cutlet), wife had the 'Kennedy' (ham, pulled pork, cheese sub). Kinda the type of sandwich you'd expect to get in the Napa, Calif. area. Both very tasty. Both with overpowering pickle slices on the sandwich. The price: $10.00 each. Tables around us were getting fidgety because of the long wait for their food. As I was leaving, I said to the table next to us "they're old but they're slow."

After a day of white water rafting we decided to try the sandwich shop for dinner. The meal was good the sandwiches were well prepared and came to the table in a timely manner. But the service was awful. It far over road anything positive I could say about our whole experience. I understand they were busy but there seemed to be no organization of the wait staff or servers. One poor young lady brought out several meals waited on tables and bussed tables. We had three different people get drinks, take our order deliver our meals. Then one young man brought our bill and I honestly didn't know which person to leave a tip for.

Group of 5 of us ate here for lunch on a late Sunday afternoon. The menu sounded amazing, but the experience & food were disappointing for this group. First off, the service, god awful slow. We kept our hopes up and figured we were waiting for the best. Apps were pimento loaded cheese fries (the pimento sauce was a disaster) and fries, which were good, but greasy. They also only offered homemade ketchup, which we couldn't tell if it tasted more like salsa or marinara. (The child in the group was deeply saddened.) Plus, the 1000 island dipping sauce w/ the fries was cottled. The only person who loved her entree had ordered the Garfield, with chix, instead of eggplant. The food was ok, but I would never go back, nor would 4/5 of our group. The wait time on drinks, water refills, and food prep was downright silly. Make certain you have time to spare.

Greatest sandwiches ever! Fabulous space. Stellar service. Ice cold beer. My significant otter was able to drag me away from Diogi's once and that was all it took to create a Sophie's restaurant Choice (the Otter just suggested the choice is not as sad ... but, how do you decide between chicharrones and homemade chips and French onion dip? Also, I don't care much for children) for me on our drives to Fayetteville (about an hour from Charleston).

Secret Sandwich Society is simply fantastic. The atmosphere is relaxed and the service is warm, informative, timely, yet gives you your space. We came on a Monday afternoon. Lucky for us, at SSS its Mac N Cheese Monday! Delicious homemade Mac and Cheese special as a side for your sandwich. Each sandwich is named after a president. I ordered the Roosevelt, based on the waiter's recommendation. Roast beef, horseradish sauce (homemade), cheese, bacon bits, on a soft yet toasted baguette. One of the most delicious sandwiches I've ever tasted. That is a bold statement. What stands out about this place is they think about what the customer wants when it comes to designing the sandwich. Who would have thought that it really matters that there are bacon BITS, rather than bacon STRIPS on the sandwich. Well, they do, and it makes a difference. Completely satisfied...especially for reasonable prices! We had enough cash left to buy a t-shirt! If you are anywhere near Beckley, WV, take a little extra time and find this place and eat there. You will not regret it!

This place is a hidden gem. A GEM, people. Adorable business concept, excellent service (actually though, the waitstaff is bad ass), and delicious food. You can turn any sandwich into a salad if you're carb-conscious or just wanna save some room for one of their local or seasonal brews. I would have to say the Garfield is my favorite veggie option, but every dish I have seen exit the kitchen at SSS looks phenomenal. We tend to visit during my trips between school (Pitt) and home (NC), and there has never been a wait longer than fifteen minutes. If you do anything in WV at all: VISIT SSS.

When in Fayetteville, go here. Try to go to SSS on an off day, because it is tiny. It's in the downstairs/deck of an old house. the service was outstanding, and the server asked if we had ever been there, then proceeded to tell us nearly everything was made in house. At our table we had a truman (he said this is one of the most popular) with a side salad, a mckinley (meatloaf- too many spices for my liking) with loaded pimento cheese fries, and an eagle burger (so good). They've got local beers from Bridge Brew Works. It's great to see a small town quirky restaurant with people who obviously pay attention to the quality and preparation of foods. I wouldn't go with a large group, because you'd be waiting a lot time most likely.

My husband and I stopped at the SSSS on the last leg of our drive home to Morgantown from a beach vacation in FL. We split the Lucy salad and a Fillmore sandwich and they brought them both out on separate plates, which was very thoughtful. Both were delicious but the Fillmore was especially mouth watering. I loved the homemade pickle & ketchup. Nothing synthetic and delicious, mindfully crafted additions to the meal. We also tried the Bridge Brew Works beers on tap- a lager and a kolsch. Also perfect for ending our vacation week. It's no wonder they were packed on a Sunday afternoon. This place is a gem, we will definitely be back!

Great food and service! The staff and management are very friendly and accommodating. I would recommend the restaurant to anyone that's going to Fayetteville. I'll definitely be a return customer the next time I'm in the area.

On a very sad last day of vacation in Fayetteville, my boyfriend and I decided to stop in the Secret Sandwich Society for our final goodbye meal. This is where I fell in love... We sat outside on their cool little deck and were approached immediately by our waitress. Apparently "Mac and Cheese Mondays" are a thing, so I opted for a side of that to go with my LaFayette; my date got the Eisenhower with a small soup. The food came out a short time later and was absolutely delicious! They had sriracha on hand, so that made me one happy girl as sriracha in mac and cheese is amazing - if you haven't experienced this, I highly recommend it. The LaFayette (fried chicken, ham, swiss, blue cheese spread & honey mustard) was a party in my mouth. The flavors worked together so well! Blue cheese spread AND honey mustard - yes, please! The date's Eisenhower (seared mortadella, ham, cherry peppers, provolone, aioli, red wine vinaigrette & LTO) was also delicious - or so I heard. (He finished it before I got a bite). The ingredients and bread for both sandwiches were super fresh and tasty. I'm pretty sad that we hadn't gone to Secret Sandwich Society at the beginning of our trip, because I would have loved to try some of the other creations on the menu. If you're in the area, definitely check this place out! Note to the owners: please open one in Philly so I can visit often :)

Great sandwich combinations ( I had the turkey with peach jam and blue cheese) and others had a burger ( wonderful mix of onions tomatoes balsamic vinegar - great bun). Definitely worth finding and excellent service staff!

  • Allison G.

The inside space is small but on a nice day like today it doesn't matter because the deck and yard seating is ample. The waitress informed us right away that everything but the bread cheese is made in house, but they were still great. Pros: the sandwiches were awesome. The service was great. Our waitress was sweet and attentive. The local beer selection was awesome (and it was great to $1 off a West Virginia beer on West Virginia day!) Con: The bathroom was dimly lite, and didn't have a changing table for little ones.

  • Erin S.

They're not lying when they say there's something secret about this place. I got the veggie burger on the Renegade and my partner got the Dynamo burger. We wanted to finish the food so badly because they were the best burgers, fries and pickles we'd ever had but unfortunately filled up quickly from all the good tastes after a full day of climbing near the gorge. Highly recommend. Had to wait to digest to write the review!

One of my wife and my favorite restaurants. Very cool local place. All named after presidents. The Herbert Hoover is my favorite sandwich. We get it every time. Must get the homemade chips too and Martha's salad.

  • Anthony C.

WOW. Can you have more than 5 stars? Their menu is carefully worked out, and each sandwich seems to be something someone spent a lot of time putting together. Each ingredient put into it with care and conviction. Our server (Ruth) took us through the menu and specials. She told us what she liked, and what the most popular things were. This was necessary because there was a lot to choose from. I had a meatloaf sandwich--I forget which president it was named after. It was simply amazing. I LOVE meatloaf, and really appreciate a good and interesting recipe. This was spicy, and had a taste that went well beyond anything your mom baked in the oven. The bread/roll was really fresh and tasty, and held the meat together perfectly. I left stuffed and wanting another whole sandwich all at the same time. Why Bethesda does not have a place as good as this is beyond me. We have more restaurants per square mile than anyplace but San Francisco and nothing comes close to this. I can not recommend this place more.

Great place! Visiting from out of town and lucky to find this spot. Delicious food and really good local beer options. Absolutely worth a visit. Try the pimento fries appetizer and Mac n cheese if you're lucky to visit on a Monday! :)

I love this place. Sadly, it's not a place I frequent. Everything I've ever had has been spot on, crave-worthy, delicious. The staff is super friendly. Tonight they even shared their recipe for their tomato bisque with us. I had the lark a super decadent burger topped with an over easy egg. My girl had the dynamo, a burger topped with bacon crumbles and a blue cheese spread. Afterward, we shared the super tart (in a great way) key lime pie. Definelty a must try in Fayetteville.

Stopped in for lunch on the deck. I had a burger that was delicious and the wife had the rice and chicken soup. The waiter was nice, prompt and efficient. The atmosphere is very laid back. We have been here 2 or 3 times before and haven't been disappointed.

We are always looking for good places to eat on our drive from North Carolina to Pittsburgh to visit family and we have now found our favorite. The SSS has great sandwiches and salads with a very cool atmosphere. The deck outside is the best place to sit. We are vegetarian, so I prefer the Garfield (eggplant park sandwich with homemade chips). The egg sandwich is also great.

Hubby and I are huge sandwich connoisseurs, so we couldn't wait to try this place out. The concept is really cool - a sandwich dominant menu that also features burgers, salads and soups. The sandwiches are all named after presidents and offer unique ingredients like "bacon jam" and a sometimes hard-to-find, pimento cheese spread. I ordered the meatloaf sandwich specifically because it came with bacon jam...that I just had to experience. I was expecting more of a spread, but it was actually kind of crumbly and I couldn't really find it on my sandwich. Nonetheless, the sandwich tasted good. The fresh soup of the day was excellent as was their homemade ketchup, chips and pickles. Everything was fresh and tasted good. Would come back!

Hungry after a long day of hiking to waterfalls in the Gorge, my boyfriend and I decided to give Secret Sandwich Society a try. So glad we did! The servers were friendly, the atmosphere was hip and casual, and the food was AMAZING. To start, we shared a Lucy salad, which was delicious. For our entrees, I had the Jefferson, and he had the Rawhide burger. The only disappointing thing was that we couldn't finish our meals because we were so stuffed! I quite possibly have never had a better sandwich. I will definitely be returning to Secret Sandwich Society on my next trip to Fayetteville. What a hidden gem!

I had a really great experience here today! I came into the restaurant sweaty from just finished a race and was a little self-conscious about being gross. The staff made me feel immediately relaxed and asked how my race went! I didn't feel super decisive so I asked my waitress what she recommended, and she suggested the Truman. It was delicious! An excellent dining experience from start to finish and if I am ever in the area again I will certainly be eating here again!

Awesome place! The service was friendly and fast. They make almost everything from scratch and the food was delicious. I had the Lafayette and my hubby had the Kennedy. Both sandwiches were great. The chips are only so-so and could have used a dipping sauce. The table beside us got the fries and they looked good especially with the homemade Ketchup. Pretty tasty!

Perfect place to stop when driving through West Virginia. The ratings are earned, it's great, good for kids, excellent wait staff, loads of personality, good local beers, sandwiches you can't get anywhere else, on and on and on.

This was my first time here to eat and I must say that this was one of the best places in the state! Friendly staff and fresh delicious food. I'll be back for certain. I also loved the feel of the place, really comfortable with indoor and outdoor seating. A real secret!!

I'm so glad I stumbled across this place! Yelp steered me here after my road trip detour to see the impressive New River Gorge Bridge. It was getting late and I realized I hadn't eaten, so I was looking for some good, non-chain restaurant food close by. Thanks to Yelp, I found this place very close by and saw that I had about a half-hour before closing so I skedaddled over. To start, how could you not like a restaurant called Secret Sandwich Society? It's a cool, funky little location in what appears to be a converted historic house. It was a warm evening and I was by myself, so I sat in a small table outside on the deck area and it was great. Everything on the menu looked fantastic, so upon the advice of my server, I had the Truman -- shaved turkey, peach jam, blue cheese spread, fried onions, on a toasted french baguette. Oh my, what an awesome sandwich! It definitely goes towards the top of my list of all-time favorite sandwiches. I also had the orzo salad as a side and it was wonderful as well. Wish I'd had more time to spend in Fayetteville so I could go back and try other items on the menu. This restaurant was an unexpectedly delightful find. Now I have another reason to revisit this area besides the awesome river scenery! My only regret is not buying one of their cool t-shirts (I'll do that on the next trip).

Went here twice when staying at ACE adventure resort. Excellent artisan sandwiches with cool names of presidents and historical figures. Both times I visited I had the Polk, a chicken cutlet with chipotle bacon jam and LTO, fresh hand cut fries and home made ketchup. Can't get any better in this area where every other restaurant is a chain. Really wish they were open on Tuesdays.

Holy hell was that a good sandwich. I got the Eisenhower with a side of fries then mooched a friend's chocolate cheese cake. Everyone at our table loved their food. It gets better... the service was out of this world. My friend has some food restrictions, and after having made a mistake bringing out her dish, they made sure to bring out the corrected sandwich very quickly and free of charge. You really can't go wrong here - awesome food, great people.

Wow, this place is outstanding. I had a renegade burger here and it was delicious, but honestly everything on the menu looked tasty. The wait staff was super friendly and promptly brought food and drinks out. Bring this secret society to Michigan as soon as possible!

SSS was recommended by many of our guides at Adventures on the Gorge. The sandwiches were as good as our guides built them up to be. The soup if the day and the SSS fries were also super yummy! We'll be back!

The atmosphere and coffee here is wonderful! We loved the porch and the little park view from our seats. Our sandwiches were to die for, I had the Coolidge and highly recommend it! And the service was friendly and fast to boot. We will definitely be back next Gauley season.

Great atmosphere in a great part of the world-West by God Virginia. The secret sandwich society produces a great variety of unique homemade sandwiches and burgers that will knock your socks off at a great price. Come hungry. Leave over served.

Service a little slow but friendly. Nice location. Feels like you're going to a speak easy with the entrance. Sandwiches are very unusual. Be sure to try the bacon jam!

Just stopped in for an early lunch while traveling through the area. My husband assured me I'd love it, and he was right. Quaint little place, friendly, efficient servers, cool beer list, and fascinating sandwich offerings. We settled on the chips and homemade ranch dip, then the Lafayette sandwich with quinoa salad, which they split for us in the kitchen- perfect!

I really enjoyed this place. I ordered the meatloaf sandwich with tomato and carrot soup; I thought both were excellent. Great outdoor seating with very friendly staff. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone.

Amazing little restaurant! We beat the weekend lunch rush by coming in at 11:30. Place filled up fast with a lot of locals and families. Fantastic food and excellent service. We'll probably make a trip back just to eat there!

Checked out this place, with some friends, for lunch after a big hike. It was difficult to choose a sandwich, they all sounded so good. We ordered the pimento cheese fries while contemplated sandwiches. The pimento cheese fries are awesome, although not the most intelligent choice if you are trying to cut calories; but who cares after a big day out in wilds of WV. The sandwiches were great all around, everybody scarfed them down without sharing - a good indicator of their tastiness. The pickles are brined in house and are delicious. I also had the orzo salad, excellent, very refreshing on a hot summer afternoon. The service is very friendly and the outdoor seating is perfect.

After the owner invited us back we ate there again and it was a very, very different experience. Not only was our waiter very friendly and attentive, but the food was EXCELLENT. This time we ordered sandwiches (McKinley spiced meatloaf and Truman turkey) with loaded fries and mac n'cheese as sides. Everything was so good and we are now officially fans of this restaurant.

Secret Sandwich Society is the perfect place to wind down after a day of hiking! I stopped in and several tables were full - a couple were full with some Europeans who were there hiking and some locals seemed to be there as well. A small dining room, but ample seating on the porch. I went with the Truman sandwich - turkey, peach jam, blue cheese spread & crispy onions. I added the society chips, because it seemed like the right thing to do, and I have to confess I wanted to try their homemade ketchup. The sandwich seemed like a random assortment of ingredients but it was incredible. The bread was perfect as well. The chips were great and the ketchup was a salsa-type tomato concoction, perfect for the chips. If you're in the area hiking, this is a perfect place to stop. I heard the table next to me order dessert and was tempted but I didn't have any. I should have. I will next time.

We got a Ulysses and Kennedy to go along with a cheesecake, which we didn't realize wasn't in the bag until we got back to the hotel. We called them and told them it was missing and we were able to stop in the next day and pick it up. The sandwiches were very good, but a bit pricey at $10.00 each. The chocolate cheesecake that great and tasted like pudding. The local beer was great!

  • Steph N.

Great good, amazing service (We loved Thom!!!). We were in town for the Bridge Walk and were lucky enough to find this gem! I got the Ulysses, sliced pork loin with a sweet jelly, and the spinach bisque. Sandwich was very tasty, great bread, soup was a little spinach-y but very good flavor. Boyfriend got the meatloaf sandwich, liked the favor (nice spice) but he was a little thrown off by the texture, more crumbly and mushy than typical meatloaf. Nice local beer section too. Highly recommend, but limited seating, they said they plan to enclose the outside area to expand seating.

First off. Sweet name. And sweet shirts that say "shhh". From the people that brought you the famed Pie's and Pants comes Secret Sandwich Society. Piled high sandwiches, salads and burgers. Space is tight inside but if it is a nice day enjoy the patio. So many things I wanted to try but I ended up with the Truman- turkey, peach jam, blue cheese spread and crispy onions. Baller. They forgot my pickle but I sampled two of my friends' pickles. One was simply amazing but the second was a bit mushy. The homemade ketchup is bangin' but for the price (dollar more for fries vs. chips) I felt a bit priced out. Totally don't mind paying more for local/homemade but sandwiches topping $11 is Dean and Deluca prices in Fayetteville, WV. Stop here. Chow down. Get a $1 PBR. Takes the sting off a stacked high but pricey sandwiches.

As we approached the inconspicuous Secret Sandwich Society, I was very nervous, my friend was visibly anxious, as well. Without having to utter a word, we were admitted entrance despite not knowing the secret handshake. Phew! We were in! Hooded guards with battle axes made a way for us as we stepped forward. It was very dark and cool in the underground tunnel. Only torches every 15 to 20ft illuminated the old cavern, making my eyes play tricks with me, on the old brick walls. That was an except from my upcoming novel. Now, back to the review. ...I'm kidding by the way. Fayetteville, WV?? We were just passing through, on the last leg of our road trip. I am so glad we stopped off to be tourists at the New River Gorge Bridge. And that we both needed to pee. I decided to do some Yelping since my tummy was-a-rumblin'. To my surprise, this place popped up! To get here, we had to back track over the bridge, but luckily Joe was hungry, too. This was actually one of the highlights (food-wise) of the road trip. The place is sort of perched on the side of a hill. You park on the street above, and follow the sign down the stairs to the entrance. The place is modern, the service was very helpful and super friendly. When my friend and I said we were curious about the bacon jam, our server went and brought us a little sample cup. That was cool. Joe ordered a burger with some fries and homemade ketchup. The ketchup and fries were outstanding. And I do NOT usually eat ketchup, no not even on my eggs (for you Hawaii natives reading this). I didn't try Joe's burger but he loved it, and it did look great. Despite not wanting something too heavy, I went for the meatloaf sandwich with bacon jam. BACON JAAAAAM dude!! Don't be grossed out. There was no jammy or jelliness to it. It was like puree. Very smokey and bacony, with a good kick! The stuff is really good. My sister makes a great, great meatloaf. She knows how to season it and puts a lotta vegetables, I like that. I need veggies in my food and I was not disappointed here. One wouldn't be overwhelmed with the vegetables, but thankfully they were there. The meatloaf was moist, full of flavor, tasted home cooked. If or when I ever come back, it'll be incredibly difficult to make myself try something new on the menu. They also have a drink menu, I really wanted to have a nice lager with lunch, but it was my turn to drive after and I didn't want to slip into a food coma. The outside seating area is awesome!! When we went it was overcast and sort of dark (in the middle of the day). So the white Christmas lights lining the rail was very bro-mantic. Sorry Joe, but I do wish your name was Julia that day. Dudes take note, prime casual date spot. It's very rare that I can sit down and crank out an entire review like I did just now. My current "unfinished reviews" queue count? 19. That should tell you something about this place. It made a real impression on me.

Wow!! I had the best sandwich of my life! My family stopped there after our guide informed us that he also works at this place. The service was okay. But the food was amazing! I ordered the Polk and everyone else ordered different things and none of us left disappointed ! Thanks Steve, you were right!! You do make great food!

The wait was a bit long, but the food was amazing. Nothing but praise from my table of 7, and our waitress was nice enough to split the check 5 ways even though they say that the max is 4. And I'm pretty sure my "side" soup was a whole bowl of soup - they were so generous! Overall, awesome place.

Nice hip gourmet sandwich place. They make really good food here Everything here seems to be made from scratch. I tried several things here...everything was good: My favorite was the meatloaf sandwich which had bacon jam and caramelized onions.

We came from out of town as a party of 4 and bought restaurant.com covupons which we were told had to be for separate tables so essentially each of us would have to sit separately which we were willing to do as we were from out of town and were never going to return to WV and after the rude service, certainly not returning here. We then each ordered our food to go and each paid separately. The logic? None aside from turning off tourists and terrible customer service. The worst part? The owner kept mumbling that the policy was written in the coupon and staring at us. The secret to secret sandwich society is treating their customers poorly.

Awesome, awesome find in the "coolest small town in America". Wonderful people, great service, cute space, Locally-sourced, DELICIOUS as all get out. Even the rootbeer was local. Not to get all Portlandia up in here but, that was a nice find in the middle of our vacation. A girl can only go to Walmart so many times.

  • Mark M.

Super cool spot, very nice staff, and well-curated beer selection. The outside seating is absolutely beautiful. Had the pleasure of having both lunch and breakfast here...the sandwiches are no joke! Almost everything is homemade/local and it seems like the menu really caters to the season, which is probably why it was all so delicious. And really, how could a sandwich of fried mortadella, fresh local egg, crispy onion, and house-made pickles go wrong? The menu is simply chock full of interesting, creative combinations that are definitely over-the-top but nicely executed. I will definitely be stopping here the next time I'm in town!

Eat. Here. Just do it. Go out of your way if you have to. I have some good friends up in the "coolest small town in WV", so I have thankfully gotten the "here are all the good restaurants around here" tour. So imagine my surprise when I hear "you have GOT to try this sandwich place". Sandwich place? What could be so great about a sandwich place? Well, I don't really know how to quantify it with words-but I will try. First of all, they have bacon jam. While I can't recommend this for everyone (it's a little weird), it's BACON JAM PEOPLE! The other discerning, unique thing I experienced here for the first time is home made, from scratch, ketchup. I am not a fan of ketchup and I found myself pestering the waitress for more and more of this stuff as I continued to smother my fries in it. Okay, on to the actual food. If you haven't already go ahead and take a peek at the menu, it is nuts. The ingredients never seem to fit together quite right on paper. However, once you try that nutty looking combination your soul will be forever transformed. I cannot recommend this place highly enough, if you are in town or are one of the 15 people who live in Fayetteville you need to eat here. It's not optional, do it!

This place has sandwiches that dreams are made of. I can't imagine there is a bad thing on the menu. The homemade chips are ridiculous, the Society Fries will bring a tear to any pimento cheese lover's eye. I wish I could find sandwiches this awesome in NYC, because I haven't found any that can match this place yet.

My husband and I went to Secret Sandwich Society, this past weekend. He had a burger (I stole a bite and it was just amazing!) and I had a chicken sandwich that comes with bacon jam. My husband is quite the burger traditionalist but he was very impressed by the burger. He agreed with me in that it was one of the best we have ever had! Since I wasn't quite sure what bacon jam is, I requested it to be put on the side. It had absolutely no sweetness to it, just a salty & smoky taste that added to my sandwich. Their ketchup seemed to be homemade which was unexpected. I liked it but my husband did not because it's not anywhere close to the typical Heinz style ketchup. They also served natural soda (no corn syrup/sweetened with cane sugar) which impressed my husband. The service was fast and the food was made to order, including the awesome fries! And the pickle? It is how sandwich shop pickles should be - cold, crisp, tangy, with a tad bit of sweetness. If we are back in the area again, we will definitely stop here!

I stopped on the way from PA to Charlotte and it was so good I stopped on the way home. Just a cool vibe with great and different sandwiches. Don't look at the first ingredient look at the 2nd and 3rd on each sandwich, the carmelized onions, oven dried tomatoes, bacon jelly. Theses are the things that take this sandwiches from good to great. On the way down I got the McKinley. The meatloaf was very good and even had a little bit of heat which I liked. On the way home I ordered the Centurion Veggie burger and I wished I would have paid better attention to what the veggie burger was because it was incredible. It might have been some eggplant portobello contraption with provolone on top, but whatever it was it was tremendous. I highly recommend SSS and Louis and his staff should be proud.

This place was awesome. Exhausted and hungry after a long day of climbing, my friend and I went to check it out and were not disappointed. I dont remember the names of the sandwiches we tried, but mine was veg and his was something with ham. They were both phenomenal, and the local mutton soup they were serving was delicious, too. The only thing I didn't love was the spinach bisque, but only really because it wasn't really what I was expecting (not smooth in texture). The portions were generous (plenty left over for snack in the car the following day) and everything was just super tasty. Definitely worth a visit. Yummm.

Society chips and dip - 7/10 - homemade chips with a delicious homemade french onion dip Polk sandwich - 7/10 - very fresh and tasty McKinley sandwich - 8/10 - the meatloaf had some heat to it and the crispy onions gave it a great texture Eisenhower - 7/10 - great flavors from the ham and the aioli, unfortunately, the cherry peppers can be very overpowering at time

it is a derned good thing that i took a bite of a pickle before i left the secret sandwich society - if i had been on the road when that happened, oi. there would have been lots of wasted fuel gettin back there. i would go back for the pickles alone, they are so damned good! tangy like a pickle should be, a touch of sweet....i have one more in my fridge that i am eating tonight and i will be peeved when i don't have any more. note to the owners - jar those pickles and ship them to me! :D my main squeeze and i are from philly and were on vacation in west virginia last week and the one place that everyone recommended was the secret sandwich society. first impression was oooh! since they call their hoagies hoagies ;), second was awesome staff, third was damn i want every sandwich on the menu. ordered the kennedy (similar to a cubano) and the eisenhower (fried mortadella!), both were outstanding. homemade chips were excellent too, as was the orzo salad and special soup (cream of asparagus). good beers on draft, too. i/we would def recommend this place to anyone as they had plenty of vegetarian/vegan options (gluten-free folk, yes, you can survive on those pickles alone). we will definitely go there again when we next head back to new river gorge. best of luck to the owners and staff!

I lived in Beckley a couple of years back and this place was my culinary refuge. The sandwiches are absolutely delicious and unique and all priced within reason. The bacon aioli is amazing and i was always a huge fan of $1 PBR days. Oh, and the pickles are SO damn good! It's a great place to nosh at after a long day in the sun whitewater rafting or exploring the New River Gorge. Definitely check this one out!

Great sandwiches and great service! OK, I was a little skeptical of another reviewers suggestion of a hipster vibe, but when I saw they had free wifi and Pabst Blue Ribbon on the menu I was a believer! The waitress was great. She offered to take our photo when she saw me takin' a quick snapshot and when we ordered one sandwich she asked if we wanted it halved. Two small soups and a shared sandwich plate with drinks less than $25 and my wife and I left with full bellies. On a side note my better half wanted me to inform everyone that the bathrooms were extremely clean and she didn't even feel the need to use a toilet seat cover. This is pretty impressive because I think she uses toilet seat covers in our own home...

The service is slow, but staff is nice. The food is hands down AMAZING! I had a Pork sandwich that was toasted with Peach Jelly and Greens. Wow!! I also had the Mint/Cucumber Orzo Salad. It was good the first few bites, but the flavor was a little much for me. My friend had a Special BBQ Pork sandwich. The chipotle sauce had a wonderful kick and the flavor was fantastic! Their Signature Chips was ok. Nothing I would crave for.

I came here with my sons (ages 12 and 14) after some whitewater rafting in the area. We were looking for something a bit different and the positive reviews led us here. The three of us loved our food. I got the Truman (turkey, peach jam, blue cheese spread & crispy onions) and the boys both got the Jefferson (roast beef, horseradish aioli, white cheddar, and LTO). Although served without sides, the portion sizes were generous. The only down side was that it took a very long time to get our food (as in 30 minutes). However, the waitress was very apologetic and made it up to us by bring homemade chips and dipping sauce. (Also outstanding.) We sat outside which added to the ambiance. Great stuff!

If you appreciate sandwiches at all, you have to check out the Secret Society. Fresh, local ingredients, and creative combinations. The chips, made in-house, are awesome, as are the pickles. Cool, minimalist layout inside, with a huge outdoor deck. Coffee is delicious, and the beer selection is extensive. An excellent place to recharge and recoup after adventuring in the New River Gorge.

We drove from Charlotte to meet friends from PA for the Memorial weekend. We spent 48 hours in the area...which allowed for repeat visits for the six of us, because of the food and service here. If you are travelling anywhere between Florida and Canada and your drive takes you on Rt 19 through West Virginia, you HAVE to stop at this place. Bacon jam and sandwiches to die for...to say nothing of the Boddington and Guiness...AND Gluten free beer (also gluten free bread baked on site!) GREAT food and great staff...highly recommended.

We visited (or stumbled upon) The Secret Sandwich Society late evening on a Friday night while scouting the New River for an upcoming trip. Dinner was amazing and our server was INCREDIBLE. I had a burger which was well portioned, cooked perfectly, and tasted fresh. My wife had an amazing salad and definitely do not forget to order the fries with their homemade ketchup and garlic aioli. This past weekend we topped off our adventure by taking all the family and friends to the Secret Sandwich Society for lunch. They did not fail to impress, however; if you are going with a group of 8 or more I would suggest warning the establishment with a phone call so they can be ready!

I was visiting the New River Gorge area with family and we stumbled upon this place. It's a cute place, nestled onto a hillside. And sandwiches are both creative and delicious. And I love the homemade chips and dip. Lots of good, homey things that I remember from my childhood. Also, lots of great, progressive, creative sandwiches. Perfect for the whole family.

Innovative and fun menu + tasty food = a great meal. It's a little bit pricier than a fast food joint, but the quality is so good that it makes it completely worth it. I seriously recommend the McKinnley and Hoover, both are very tasty sandwiches!

Really delicious! Loved the society chips and dip and my sandwich "the Woodrow" was fantastic and left me so stuffed that I almost couldn't eat my key lime pie for dessert (but I managed somehow). Had the Jefferson. It was great. Chips were fabulous. The waitress was so super nice to my 1 year old. She brought her out apple slices in a smiley face. It's the little things like this that make a place great. If your in Fayetteville, stop in. You won't regret it.

This place is awesome! In fact, it was so good, that after we tried it, we went back again the next day before leaving town for another round. Their sandwiches are fresh, have creative ingredients, and are delicious. My husband got the meatloaf sandwich (on the recommendation of our server) and couldn't stop raving about it, I got the burger with balsamic onions and bacon crumbles and it was divine. The next day I got a delicious potato soup (fresh and herby and not full of cream) and the orzo pasta salad (also fresh and great on a hot summer day- it had cucumber and mint and was so good) and my husband got a pork loin sandwich with greens and swiss and peach jam. All were great. The kids ordered toasted pb&j, and toasted ham & cheese, and were thrilled with it. Their chips appetizer was also good - I'm not a big chip lover but my kids and husband gobbled them up happily. The salads looked really good - next time we are back that's first on my list. Our only complaint was the catsup, which was made in house. It was a nice touch, but honestly I prefer the more typical Heinz version and the kids wouldn't touch it. Service was friendly and quick, and the outdoor seating area is lovely. I was surprised to find a restaurant like this in such a small town, and will happily visit anytime I am in the area! By the way, if you are vegetarian, there are plenty of options for you here.

Took my wife on an anniversary trip to the New River Gorge/Valley. We were looking for something good to eat for lunch, before some hiking and swimming. We weren't expecting much; something to hold us over. When we entered the SSS, we were immediately greeted by one of their kind waitresses/hosts. She proceeded to help us figure out which sandwiches we would want. Later, we realized that the waitress who helped us, is one of the owners. It was obvious she knows her food very well and loves to help people enjoy what they eat! We were hoping that the food would be as good as quiznos or subway; what we didn't know is that the food would be MUCH better! We tried the Polk (Chicken breast with a yummy bacon aioli...mmmmmm good) as well as the Eisenhower. As I bit into the Polk sandwich, I couldn't help but wonder when this shop would become a chain, because I want one of these in Alexandria, VA! My wife loved her sandwich as well. In fact, we loved the sandwiches so much, that the next day, we decided to make a special stop at the SSS to get sandwiches again; this time, trying the Garfield and their special of the day (which was amazing!). Once again, we were blown away. The quality of the food and the mixture of flavors was superb, especially for a shop that sells meals between 8 and 10 bucks! As others have said, if you are driving through Fayetteville, WV, and want something very tasty to eat, do yourself a favor and stop at the Secret Sandwich Society. You won't be disappointed!

We were pleasantly surprised by this place. Strange hours (closed on Tuesdays) but fantastic food. I had the Pork Sausage & Cabbage soup and the Roast Beef Sandwich. The homemade chips & pickle were delicious too. If you are in the area - stop in here for lunch.

Small town, late night, and we stumbled on this place. Basic selection of sandwiches and beer. Nothing too surpriseing, but you will enjoy your food.

Thank you for your awesomeness Secret Sandwich Society!! My hubby and I love this place! I ordered the salad with turkey on top..wow!! What an amazing salad! Yes, I will drive 45 minutes or longer just to eat it again!!! Bread, chips, pickles are all so yummy! Now my complaint...there is not one of these restaurants in Daniels, WV! keep up the good work!!

I really enjoyed this place. I ordered the meatloaf sandwich with tomato and carrot soup; I thought both were excellent. Great outdoor seating with very friendly staff. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone.

Service a little slow but friendly. Nice location. Feels like you're going to a speak easy with the entrance. Sandwiches are very unusual. Be sure to try the bacon jam!

Amazing little restaurant! We beat the weekend lunch rush by coming in at 11:30. Place filled up fast with a lot of locals and families. Fantastic food and excellent service. We'll probably make a trip back just to eat there!

First off.

Eat. Here.

My friend tried the Velvet burger and loved it as well, what isn't better with bacon?! For sure a must visit place in the gorge.
