Our friends from Fairmont wanted to take us here for dessert. With a power outage we decided to make it dinner and dessert. My wife shared the He-Man breakfast with our daughter and it was so much food! Served on a garbage can lid, it was definitely He-Man worthy! The ultimate piece was dessert. We decided to go for the banana split, which was a giant 9 lb plate full of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry ice cream. It may not have been 9 lbs, but it was definitely huge. All 7 of us ate on this dessert and barely got past half of it being gone. We were all in an ice cream coma by the time it was done! The atmosphere was fun and the service was very good. We would stop by again if we make it back to Fairmont.

I rarely write poor reviews, only positive experiences, but after today's breakfast at Poky's, I felt compelled to write something more. After a quick weekend trip to Morgantown for hiking/kayaking, I read about Poky's in a local magazine. So decided to make the 50 mile round trip out of the way stop of breakfast. Sitting at the breakfast bar, we had front row seats. While the food was pretty good, the service was very poor. Our waitress seemed pleasant, but the manager was rude, to both patrons and the staff. It really turned off me from eating. Her constant yelling and condescending comments to the wait staff are unnecessary and ruined the experience. I'll will not make any future stops at Poky's while visiting WV.

I have been here several times and have usually had a decent experience until the last time. This was at 8:00 pm on a week day. They were a little busy but had plenty of empty and unclean tables and enough staff walking around to help clean up so my boyfriend and I could sit down instead of stand for 10-15 minutes waiting. It was a while, even after I told one of the staff we had been waiting far too long. Long enough that my usually patient bf was getting really irate. The waitress was ok. The food was great as soon as we finally got it. That is. To be honest, this place isn't worth waiting for a table for that long. I doubt I will be running back soon.

This is the best place to eat in Fairmont, WV next to Muriales. Love the fun ambience, wonderful service and their portions are outstanding!

The last time I was there I had to send my chicken back 3 times because it was still frozen on the inside. Customer service was aweful! I used to love this place but the last few years it has truly going down hill. I believe if they keep going this way, they will not be open very much longer.

Food is decent, service is good, prices are way too high for what u get. Last few times we went here the food wasn't as good and came out colder than we liked. Overall not a bad place to go.

Maybe I was there on an off day? My husband and I were visiting family in Morgantown when they insisted we try the Poky Dot. Seeing as how it was on Diners, Dives and Dashes I thought why not? The food was eh...ok. Nothing great. Sure they have a big sundae, but when your server is awful, dessert is the last thing on your mind. I ordered the hot Turkey sandwich...which came with the most minimal amount of turkey on it that I have ever seen. All texas toast and doused in gravey (like I wouldn't notice there was no meat? Not cheap either. The funny thing was, it came in a "half" size and I was like, "WHY!"My husband got a steak sandwich that was nothing to write home about, but edible. Kids had pancakes - can't mess those up. Our server behaved as though she wished she was not at work or dealing with well, being a server (blonde hair, looks miserable...it's the Poky Dot! There are children here...SMILE - be nice - check on your table). The service was AWFUL and they were not busy at all. Needless to say, we left hungry and were not impressed. I guess the best thing to do is to get the garbage lid of breakfast and call it a day, although breakfast is breakfast. The service is HORRIBLE though so plan on being here awhile and likely having a pissed off server.

Yummyness with huge portions. I highly suggest it. They also have the "he man challenge" that you have to finish in 45 minutes... If you're really hungry try it ;)

Awesome place to take you back a ways..there was no wait at lunch on Tuesday. The waitress was very friendly and attentive. I had the roast beef sandwich, mash potatoes and gravy..Mmmmmm good. My daughter had the fried chicken salad in a tortilla shell bowl with ranch dressing. She also said it was awesome!! My youngest had a dirt & worms dessert.. Great!!

You must save room for a slice of pie--they have the most delicious crust I have ever tasted!

Always try to stop by when in town for one reason and that is the Giovanni. Stopped by recently and I now suspect the Giovanni, at least as I had known it, is dead. It used be a fantastic sandwich served on a hoagie roll, delicious steak, covered in Oliverio's peppers and sauce and topped with melted cheese. Well, now it comes served on Texas toast (huh? really?) and the sandwich I got was cold, the meat was dry yet greasy at the same time, the cheese was just kind of there, the sauce was almost non-existent and I think there may have been three peppers on the entire sandwich. The fries that came with it were cold as well. And this is a $10 sandwich on the menu. Maybe somebody was having an off night but that still doesn't change the fact the sandwich I love was just horrendous on my most recent visit. It was a one star sandwich but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Love the Poky Dot. You can't go wrong here. It is a diner atmosphere and it is diner food...but with love. They have awesome 'salads' to go also. The salads are made in a fried tortilla shell and are so huge they have to fit in a bakery style cake box. YUM.

We dropped in with 35 people on a Saturday night. The staff couldn't have been more accommodating. The food was fabulous and the atmosphere was fun. I highly recommend a stop at the Poky Dot!
(5)Amy C.
The place had a nasty smell and I counted 3 gnats flying around. Food not good! Pancakes were dry and bacon was not made like I asked. Yuck!! Will not be back.
(1)Ari C.
Love the atmosphere, the portions are huge! The service was very quick and friendly. My only complaint was the gristle in the chicken quesadillas.
(4)Kendra W.
I used to love this place until they took the chicken Caesar wrap off their menu. Love the atmosphere though!
(4)Stephanie C.
Poky Dot is THE place to stop while on a roadtrip! Food is great, service excellent, and such a cheerful atmosphere! Breakfast served all day, but there is a wide selection for whatever mood you're in. I got the Biscuits and Gravy and everything was perfect. Was stuffed, but I can't wait to dig into this Butterfinger Cheesecake I got to go!
(5)Michaela F.
Breakfast was horrible. My eggs were cooked wrong and greasy, the potatoes were over seasoned, and the bread smelled old. Yuck!

This place is really adorable. I love a good diner AND anywhere that embraces the Halloween holiday (my favorite). As soon as I saw giant cups of coffee, brightly colored chairs and black boas with witch faces, I knew we were going to get along. Apparently this place has been featured on Man vs Food and we saw two guys there attempting to eat the trashcan lid (literally) of food. They didn't succeed but made a good go of things. The service is very friendly. I don't care for being called ma'am but I'm quite sure that's a regional thing and I don't look like I'm 80. *crossing fingers* I had the cheese omelet with a biscuit. The omelet was good and cheesey, a bit too buttery but a healthy potion. The biscuit was disappointing, it had more of a roll consistency but not matter. Atmosphere wins me over every time. A great classic neighborhood joint!

Only had soup and salad...was ok.

This place is tiny. I was kind of creeped out by the life-sized stuffed old people at the counter. The decorator was a little over-zealous with the feather boas as well but it gives the place a very whimsical feel. My issue with this kind of over decorating is that it is just more places for dust to accumulate on. Also the counter area did look a big grimy. So a thorough cleaning would be nice. We stopped in here for breakfast. There is a good variety on the menu without it becoming overwhelming with choices. I settled on the biscuits and gravy. I got the Italian sausage patty as the meat and it was worth the additional 50 cents. The biscuits & gravy were nothing too special but not bad either. The home fries were bland and needed a little salt and needed to be crispy fried a little more. I hate soggy potatoes. The service was spotty but I didn't expect too much from the high school girls working there. One negative is that only one of them seems to know how to ring the register. With a place that small all those girls should know how to ring up a check. We stood there for a while waiting on another waitress to ring us up while our waitress was not busy. All in all not a bad experience and it was a nice filling non-fast food breakfast when passing through town.

Two visits in two days, must be good. Staff was lovely and attentive. We like the omelets, the crispy bacon, and the coffee. My daughter had hot cocoa topped with whipped cream and chocolate chip pancakes. Too much sugar, but tasty. There is a lot of kitschy decor, but it seems surprisingly clean.

This place was fine in a town that didn't seem to have a lot of other options. We both had fairly standard diner food - burger and chips for me, chicken fried steak and sides for my friend. They were actually both better than the desserts everyone seems to be raving about. We both got varieties of cheesecake that honestly just weren't all that exciting. I mean, the portions were enormous, which I suppose is a good thing, but mostly they were just covered in whipped cream and chocolate syrup, and the actual substance of the dessert was average.

Disclaimer: I haven't been here in ages, but it used to be wonderful. If I recall, they had a delicious vegetarian grilled vegetable Reuben that I hope is still on the menu. I liked the diner atmosphere of the place. And the cute name.
(5)Daniel D.
The southern eggs benedict are fantastic, but you need to go for the desserts!
(4)Amanda D.
This 50's style diner makes their own potato chips and they are very good. They have a round booth, those are pretty cool, especially for groups. They have good sandwiches, although I haven't had anything off the dinner menu. It's decorated cute and a little wacky, and great speedy service even at lunch time.

cute little 50s style diner. friendly service. lots of unhealthy but yummy food. plus, not a lot of competition in fairmont.

I try to get to the Poky Dot anytime I'm in town. Comfort food at it's best, is how I'd describe it! I've never had anything I've not liked here. I usually get the Honey Ham wrap with fries and it's always delicious. Burgers are good too, and the desserts are fantasticly decadent! Yesterday, I enjoyed a grilled cheese and veggie soup. Both yummy. However, while the vegetable soup had a great flavor, I didn't have many veggies other than cabbage and a couple of big carrot chunks. So, that could probably improve. Service isn't always great and is sometimes quite slow. But knowing that, I go early for lunch and leave happy. Oh, and pictures of the nostalgic old-people puppets probably isn't a great representation of the food here :)

Had lunch there with the kiddo - cute, child-friendly decor, friendly and efficient staff. My croissant sandwich was pretty good, but the kiddie pizza was absolutely disgusting - microwaved, soggy, flavorless. My son barely touched it, and I can't blame him. By the looks of things, dessert is the name of the game here. Next time, will definitely try - but I wouldn't go again for a meal.

The Poky Dot Located on 1111 Fairmont Ave, Fairmont, WV, The Poky Dot has been a part of Fairmont for over 50 years with its diner food and nostalgic feel. Last dined: Spring 2009. thepokydot.com 1) Food - 4 stars. The Poky Dot is a diner. Go for the Poky Burger (with bacon) and stay for the giant desserts. "Giant desserts" is actually a warning; the sundaes and shakes are enormous and overwhelmingly decadent for most people. The food is simple diner food and somewhat inconsistent in quality depending on what's ordered, so stick to the diner basics. Again, the Poky Burger is one of the best burgers available in this area. It's a five star burger with fresh cut fries on the side. Add some bacon and enjoy the simple things in life. 2) Service - 2 stars. It seems like 5 girls are working all the tables at the same time. They run from table to table with no sense of order or priority. It may be the most chaotic dining experience to date. The cooks seem to hold it together though, clocking plenty of time at the grill. Hopefully your meal will make it to the table when it's still warm. 3) Atmosphere - 2 stars. The Poky Dot prides itself on its eclectic, eccentric, and nostalgic interior. Instead of a shiny retro diner, the Poky Dot seems dirty and cluttered. Remove a few decorative elements and let the food speak for itself. When the decorations take the place of possible seating, there's a problem. 4) Price - 4 stars. A decent value for most of the items on the menu. 5) Additional Comments - Did I mention the wonderful Poky Burger?

Sometimes, diner food is just what the soul needs. Poky Dot has a lively, kitschy atmosphere and heft sized menu with a little bit of everything. Their food was delicious (albeit not so healthy, but I knew that going in) and the portions were ample. Some of their desserts are insanely huge - I saw two kids sharing an ice cream sundae that was nearly half the size of the youngest one's body! The staff was very friendly - something that can be a bit hard to find these days.
(4)Sam T.
Cool new interior and great desserts are the two positives. Overly greasy meals leave your stomach upset when you leave. Service could be a little better. Worth at least a try because some people really love this place.

Food is good but the dessert is where its at
