Yep --- this place is legit. Myself and my three roommates from college stopped in last weekend for lunch while visiting Blackwater Falls from Harman's cabin rental. I'd found this place on Yelp and - let's be honest - there aren't many options in Davis so this looked like the obvious winner. It's very quaint when you walk in but it was really crowded the day we ate there. We were ushered into the downstairs bar area and had a nice corner table quickly cleared off for us to sit at because the upstairs main floor you come in when you enter was packed. There are probably around 8-10 tables on the main floor with a small wood burning stove providing heat - with another 4-5 small tables in the downstairs lower bar area. We ordered the spinach balls to start as well as a sampler platter of their salsa, guacamole and queso dip. The spinach balls were really delicious - like a rolled spinach all with cheese deep fried with a warm mustard dip. YUM. I ordered my burrito as a bowl without the tortilla to save on carbs. Mine was the Tree Hugger so it was a veggie burrito in a bowl. It was a huge serving. My friends all enjoyed their food and almost everyone left with leftovers because the servings are absolutely huge and the burritos are served with chips and cilantro rice. This place was legit like a real-world Merlotte's from True Blood with stuffed bears hanging on the walls - random wall decor - wood panel decor and mismatched tables. The clientele seemed a mix of tourist (due to the ski resort nearby and the Blackwater State Park I'm sure) and local. Everyone stared at us when we walked in - for real. Not in a mean way - but a "ooooh new people!" kind of way. The food was phenomenal and our service was kind and prompt. I *think* we may have met the owner because my friend wanted to try their hottest hot sauce and the guy behind the bar came out and talked to us for a minute about it when he brought it over. He was very nice and personable, very friendly, said he kept the sauce he brought to us behind the bar because people had ruined burritos before by pouring too much on so he kept a handle on it now and only let people taste it when they specifically asked. He even actually reminded me of Sam Merlotte - super friendly guy - t-shirt and jeans with a ball cap. We really enjoyed ourselves here and had a great meal.

Who knew West Virginia was famous for burritos. Hellbenders apparently is an endangered species of lizard what that has to do with burritos I'll never know but hopefully this place isn't threatened with extinction like its namesake because they do burritos quite well. Place is deceptive big, from the outside it looks like a carryout only kind of spot. It is located in the main "downtown" area of Davis and looks like a little hole in the wall from the outside, once you enter through the place is actually quite spacious on the inside. There are two rooms where you can sit and enjoy your meal, especially good for Saturdays as this is a big place to watch Mountaineer football. Staff is friendly and helpful, they just have that down home West Virginia charm I guess as every in the general area is pretty nice. Love the decor, especially the decorations in the bathroom, the X-files play set was especially cool to me. Great burritos, they have a variety of proteins to choose from, I went with the pork, moist, well seasoned and nicely put together. Burrito was a nice size and very filling, I couldn't finish it all in one setting and made for a nice meal the next day after a quick warm up in the microwave. While the Hellbenders might not be long for this world, hopefully their fate won't come to this place as good burritos are hard to come by and they do it well.

Great eclectic place. The food and service were good. Had the Hellbender, very yummy! Ate lunch with 3 friends we all enjoyed our meal. You can bet I will be back. Also the Queso rocked!

Lots of good food at a good price. Good ambiance and service too.

Great music, and a fun vibe. Protecting hellbenders habitat is a great cause. Many locals and tourists, crowded during both visits, expect to wait for a table. It's hard for a grown man to sit and eat off the bar, nowhere for your knees to go. Service was mediocre and appeared disinterested, but the food was good. I ate here twice and enjoyed the pork dishes and green chili. Their slaw is killer. What's up with the X-Files stuff? :)

Awesome place for an outstanding burrito after an outdoorsy day. Tiny seating area, so you may have to wait, but well worth it! Lots of interesting burrito combos. I stuck with typical veggie black bean burrito. Comes with cole slaw (pretty good) and tortilla chips (average). Fast service, too!

This is the only place I've found this side of the Mississippi that can answer my cravings for Frito Pie.

Unfortunately the only reason this place doesn't get five stars is due to its location. No, it's not in the ghetto -- quite the contrary, West Virginia! Thats right, WTFuck, move this bitch to a metro line, I want a gringo burrito just writing about it!. And what about those gringo burritos? Fat, Loud and in your face, just like their West Virginian comrades. I supposed I shouldn't be taken aback by the location. I mean Cannaan Valley has became the Tulluride of the D.C. metro area. And considering the number of senators sons raised on their nannies Central American arroz con pollo authentico, Hellbenber must live up to some lofty expectations. Bruh's, Burritos, Booze AMIRITE, Brobody!? Rage.

Food ok, wait staff a hellbender. Waitress could not count, would not give the patrons (only two) separate bills. After a belligerent attitude she agreed to split the bill but double charged the drinks. Three math lessons later and a comment "if we ever come back again splitting the bill won't happen" we were reimbursed (cash only) for the over charge. Very bad experience for average food. High point, Chestnut brew works Halleck ale out of Morgantown..... The best!

Wow just wow!! We were recommended this place by some locals. We got there and ordered the spinach balls. HOLY CRAP they were to die for!!!!!!! Then came the burritos. They were the size of a small dog. I got the Hellbender (buffalo shrimp) I had that with some sour cream. It was very spicy but I couldn't stop eating it. My husband got a steak, shrimp, lettuce, rice and cheese burrito and it was delicious as well. I would definitely recommend this place. For a town who rolls up the streets at sundown this place had the best hours around! The owner was super friendly and our waiter was very helpful. Since it was our honeymoon the owner gave us free dessert, YUM! Too bad they're not closer to a major city.

Amazing burritos! I got The Admiral which has bacon and chicken for meat and various peppers and salsa. The guacamole was amazing too.

We stopped at Davis today during a trip up to Blackwater Falls. Seeing three restaurants on the little stretch of road, we decided to walk into each and check out their gluten-free options. We first walked into a pizza joint. I smiled and said, "Hi! I was wondering what you might have in the way of gluten-free options!" She sort of barked the word "salad" at me, offering no further interest in having us as customers. So we walked out and then and happened to meet a friend from Charleston (my hometown) on the street! She pointed us to Hellbender and we went over immediately. I had steak tacos (on flour tortillas) and my fiance had chicken tacos in corn taco shells. They were great! I even like the small detail of getting black beans (instead of refried) on the tacos AND romaine lettuce instead of iceberg. The atmosphere is cozy, eclectic, comfortable, and friendly. The server was friendly and casual -- the right balance between attentive and obtrusive. We'll likely go back every time we pass through Elkins.

  • Riah D.

Cozy atmosphere and packed full. Looked like the were perhaps only two servers and both made sure all their tables were taken care of. The guacamole was incredibly fresh and perfect. Burritos were huge and two-meal worthy. Great beer variety. Most of all, I was appreciative at how well our server handled the crowd, thanked us for patience, and didn't rush us in spite of all. I think her name was Sarah?

We visited this little place while at a mountain bike race this past weekend... one word, amazing!! The food was delicious. The "Hellbender" was huge and tasty! The homemade salsa was also wonderful.

Hot damn, this place is yummy! Plenty of veg options (they make their own seitan!?) and burrito bowls for the GF set. Portions attuned to long hikes and days spent skiing. Also appreciated the local beers on tap.

  • Emily V.

Huge, really filling burritos. My friend got the Admiral burrito that had bacon inside which I liked more than my steak burrito. They have a nice selection of local beers too. The owner was nice and gave us a lot of good tips for sightseeing in the area. The only reason I'm knocking off one star is because the bartender (?) was borederline rude asking us to move out of the way while she was trying to get drinks out. First off, we were hardly in the way, second, she was way too frazzled for the small amount of people who were eating there at the time. Still worth your time.

Fan-tas-tic. Stopped in on a 0 degree January night for dinner. We had Tree Hugger and Goofy Foot burritos along with salsa, guacamole, and chips. And beers. Both burritos were excellent--fresh, high quality ingredients, well put together. I really liked the way the tofu was prepared in the Goofy Foot--savory. Guacamole and salsa were excellent--way above average. The beers were outstanding including an Entish English Ale made by Chestnut Brew Works in Morgantown. Friendly service, with food arriving within 10 minutes of ordering.

Stopped by Hellbender Burritos after a day of skiing. So delicious. I got a steak burrito that was bigger than my face. It was juicy and flavorful. The actual restaurant is relatively small, but they have a waiting area upstairs with couches and a chess board to sit while you're waiting for a table. My one complaint is that they don't split checks. It's 2015, who doesn't split checks anymore? They make it clear from the beginning though, so at least it is not a surprise at the end of your meal.

Big burritos with interesting combinations of ingredients at a fair price, got a wood burning stove to keep you warm. I'm in davis for 3 nights and I ate there twice...good stuff

We stopped in on a Tuesday night after a long hike and drive from the Shenandoah Valley. The inside is very casual and laid back, and there were several locals seated around the bar. Our server was very friendly and brought us menus and waters almost immediately. We both opted for the Admiral Burrito, which was quite large and filled with large pieces of chicken, veggies, avocado, and cheese. The hot sauce needed more of a kick, but it was perfect with a few splashes of the Frank's Red Hot on the table. Overall, it was the perfect place for a quick, affordable, filling, and delicious dinner.

Big. Ass. Burritos. With friendly service and a pleasant atmosphere. I had the Hellbender with chicken. It was really tasty, though the chicken was a bit on the dry side. The house-made bleu cheese was a nice tangy component. My date had the pulled pork burrito and liked it, too. The verdict - I'd go back for sure.

very unique burritos rolled up in this very unique WV mountain town. beer selection made me smile, the burrito satisfied, and the service was plenty fine. would definitely bring friends here for a good, chill, stomach-filling time.

Great food - wonderful little burrito place (did I mention that they have vegetarian AND vegan options for the burritos!!). The only reason it did not receive a five star rating was that the service was a little slow. It was a Friday night and the place was packed - it took us 30 minutes to get our table and then at least another 30 minutes to get our food. As I said, the burritos were fabuous -- some of our large party came here for a second night in a row. I would definitly go back again!!

It would be a serious mistake to go to the Davis/ Thomas/ Canaan valley area without eating here at least once. We come to the area several times a year for weekend trips and having a hellbender burrito is an absolute must. It is frequently busy but service is quick and attentive. The menu is full of really interesting burrito options, or you can build your own. My husband and I visited this weekend on Saturday evening for dinner and on Sunday night for a couple of West Virginia beers. I requested quite a few changes to my dinner and was afraid the server would be annoyed, but he did not seem so at all. He wrote down all my requests and the food came out exactly as I requested it. I really wish we had a hellbender's in our hometown as we would eat there quite often. This place seems to be a favorite among locals. The decor is rustic, charming and welcoming. We spent some time at the bar speaking with the bartender who was wonderful. They made us feel welcome, chatted with us about the area, and were very knowledgeable about the beers they offer (a great selection by the way). I can't rave about this place enough. Just go if you are in town.

Awesome food! Love their many home made items like the guacamole (yummy!) fish dip, chili, seitan and all of their desserts:). Recent addition to the bar is the Randall 3.0 hand crafted beer! Great selection of beer. The tacos are a good choice especially, if you are not hungry for the gigantic burritos. Friendly staff and fun atmosphere. Great place to go after hiking, biking or climbing all day.

Wow, what a great surprise!! It's always wonderful when your first bite makes you say "OMG!" The food was delicious!!! The place is so cute and cool at the same time, the bar is tiny and cute but totally cool, too, with some great beer choices. But best of all -- the burritos!!!! (And the service was awesome both times we ate there!)

You have to go here, I'm not kidding. The burritos are huge and delicious! We were in town staying at Blackwater Falls and we decided to try Hellbender. When we walked in, the main dining room is in the front room, and the bar is in the room after that. We sat in the bar area, which was very cozy. The atmosphere is very casual, which we love. The service was helpful and friendly. Most importantly, the food was delicious. I had a chicken, bacon, ranch burrito. Plenty of chicken and bacon in this baby. My fella had a vegetarian burrito with seitan and cheese and a bunch of veggies. It was overstuffed and awesome. Several beers on draft. We were slightly disappointed that there was only one local brew. That one local brew was really good though. This place seems like it's a favorite local spot for residents, and I can see why. Good food, big portions, good prices, and friendly people.

The guacamole was amazing, the service was pretty good. The beer is cheap (and the food was very affordable). The decor was very cozy. The only reason it gets 4 stars is the chicken was a little chewy. Recommend the admiral burrito.

I CANNOT believe this place will not split checks!! Really??!! This is 2014 and everyone pays separately now. We brought them business with 7 paying people. The argument was they don't want to tie up the register. There were only 2 other tables with people at them! After back and forth negotiating, the waitress finally agreed to split it into 2 checks. Thanks for that. I am curious...if we had moved to separate tables, would we be able to pay for our own meals? One of our friends later pointed out to me, "If you had put it all on your card, what an inconvenience it would be for you." I do applaud the waitress for so dutifully carrying out the boss's decree, yet trying to satisfy the customers. I think she sensed we were about to leave. The management should really rethink this policy. As for the food...bean dip was good. Cheese dip and guacamole were great. Atmosphere is very nice and cozy. Not dirty like I saw in another post. The burritos were good also. No food complaints. But really, they should try to make customers feel happy about the WHOLE experience.

Strangely enough, this burrito palace slaps together a delicious fish dip. I ordered it only because it just didn't belong on the Mexican menu. Fresh and delicious with big chunks of fish. Admirals burrito was also yummy with giant slabs of bacon inside. Decor is quirky and mismatched, but it suits the surroundings and feels homey.

  • John D.

The service was terrible. The place was dirty. The food was not very good - AT ALL. Very bland. It would be like if you were perhaps Russian, and upon visiting the mother land you asked your Russian grandmother to make you a taco or burrito. And for our purposes here, she is not allowed to use the Internet to even look up the recipe (even if she were so ambitious). With that being said, I think she might craft the same thing as this place did - only they have it on the menu - which is also dirty. BTW, no substitutions on anything. Nope! It's not even about price - and just don't even think about it. Did I mention it's dirty? It was a gamble going in the first place, and we lost. At least I don't have food poisoning.

This place has charm and massive burritos. The guacamole and black bean dip are both good. While the burritos are impressive in size I didn't find them the be as flavorful as I was hoping for. They have a decent selection of beers and the service was friendly.

I thoroughly enjoyed my Lost Hiker burrito, recommended by the waitress, and look forward to trying the house made seitan on a future visit. We also had spinach balls and I had a nice Malbec. This will be a great apres-ski place after a day at Canaan or Timberline. It's casual, so showing up in ski gear won't be a problem. We also shared a pumpkin cheesecake. I love cheesecake, but usually find flavored ones to be light in the complimentary flavor. This one was full fledged pumpkin and it was delicious! For 2 people, with 2 glasses of wine/beer each, spinach balls, burritos and a cheesecake to split, the bill was in the $40 range. ~Christine Zellers CEO, LBDC

Still one of the best places between Elkins, Greenbank, Seneca, and Davis to eat, but that's not saying much. Tried a different burrito on my second vist and was equally unimpressed. Place has a total hippy vibe to it including our braless tall brunette hippy chick server in a mini skirt with princess Leia buns on the side of her head...first thing she did was insult us when we walked in the door and said she didn't know it was ugly shirt day...I really like that she did that. The server alone was so good and so much fun it would have been worth the visit. Food size is still huge. We got some queso and medium salsa this time which I highly recommend....really good. I'll probably stop by here again next time I'm in Canaan or BlackWater Falls.

Hellbenders is a local favorite. Went in and we sat in the top (the bar is in the bottom & quite crowded). A waitress came to take our orders, she was very nice and told us about their different draft beers. After ordering, our food was out in maybe 5 minutes. I usually build a burrito with black beans, rice, cheese, and sour cream. I also order my salsa on the side as well as queso for my chips, and they were very willing to split it all up. It was very tasty and huge, but it was mostly white rice. Other person ordered the shovelhead which consisted of pulled pork, coleslaw, bbq sauce, rice, and cheese. This burrito was even larger, and had so many different flavors. Halfway through our meal, a new waitress came on and introduced herself because she was taking over, we were almost done so she brought our check. It said the price, and we went down to the bar to pay. After handing the cashier the bill and money, she then said the total was wrong and needed more money. But, I will gladly pay for good food.

Fantastic burrito place. But this is using "burritos" loosely. There are many vegetarian and non-vegetarian options that may or may not resemble Mexican food, so it's probably better to think of these as wraps. Enormous wraps. Enormous wraps that are delicious. They also have a good selection of beer. It's located in a crowded little house, but the workers all seemed to be super friendly, hustling around and providing great service. The burritos came quickly. And did I mention they were delicious?

I've stayed in Canaan about 7 times and eaten at Hellbenders at least once every trip. Generally the experience is a good one, good beer, good food, ok service. However this past trip I experienced a trifecta signaling that this place is going down hill. Food, as another reviewer notes below the chicken is now totally bland and worse it was overcooked. How you can overcook and serve chicken which was cooked solely to include in a burrito escapes me. Split checks, not here, at least not anymore... We went and got beers while we waited around for a table to open up and the bartender/manager said it was easier to add it to our table tab than to run individual cards for our beers. Fine we said...until we got our check and found out that they won't split checks. Feeling a little deceived... The policy apparently is on the menu, but honestly no one in our group saw it and the waitress failed to mention it when we came in or were seated. Come on management - fewer people carry cash these days, eat the charge, up your prices if you have to. Service, has never been great. This time it was extra slow on the part of our waitress and downright rude on the part of another. Our waitress took forever refilling drinks and bringing us the check. One of the other waitresses (Amazonian brunette) heard us complaining about the no split check policy and rudely shouts in our direction that we should have known better and not have come in at all... Not sure I'll be coming back here, Siriani's across the way makes some good food...

Pluses: Massive portions. Good beer selection. Fun crowd on weekend nights. Minuses: Wait staff lost our name off wait list (lucked out and shared a table with another couple) Wait staff was slow to refill beverages. The food itself is decent. Nothing fancy, but I don't suppose they're claiming anything else. It's the atmosphere that makes the meal. I'll definitely eat here again

The best food in all of thomas/davis/canaan/etc.. by a long shot. I had the namesake hellbender burrito and was definitely not disappointed. so fresh and tasty! We also split an order of fish dip, and I think that's one of the best post-ski appetizers that I've ever had. Pair that with a decent bar selection and it's a win every-time. Space is at a premium and it seems that waits are a regular occurrence. We squeezed into two chairs at the bar and scarfed a few pints and burritos.

The Signature Hellbender burrito (Chicken breast, buffalo sauce, rice and blue cheese dressing) probably weighed in over a third of a pound. It was delicious. But my wife made hers to order, pulled pork with cheese peppers onions and rice and it was luke warm the veggies barely cooked and the cheese not even melted. The staff seemed confused if they were supposed to serve us or keep looking at us from across the room as they cleaned up after other groups had left. eventually the 2 waitresses decided who would wait on us and we were served fairly after that. not personable but it was service and she checked on us regularly after the initial wait. Seems like a cool place in an area of not many choices.

I had such a bizarre attraction even after going time 1 that I came back the next night for time 2. Time 2: Still 4 stars. Guacamole and Queso-still bangin. Chips still mediocre but made up for by awesomeness of queso and guac. The Hellbender (chicken)-wonderful. Omg. Blue cheese was wrapped in so wonderfully. Cilantro lime rice (duh). Steak Tacos-not enough cheese. Basically BF and I got different things but a swapped problem: not enough cheese... Time 1: 4 stars within the ranking of other area restaurants. Regrettably, my burrito was not as good as a Chipotle burrito, however, my boyfriends was far superior, so I maybe didn't make the best choice. Service-friendly and quick. Non-invasive (a quality always to be enjoyed). Queso-amazing. Made up for the fact the chips were something like from Sam's Club. Probably velveeta or something but it was still really nice and thick. Quite possibly my favorite queso I've had at a restaurant. The Admiral-boyfriend got this and it was amazing. Get this over what I got. Treehugger-excellent when smothered with queso, mediocre without. I just felt it wasn't cheesy enough. The broccoli in it was of wonderful quality though. The tortillas were of perfect quality and wrapped the burritos beautifully. Difficult attempt to eat without fork. Stuffed so big, but rolled so perfectly. I will come back. I will probably try the hellbender. I will def get queso and guacamole.

What a find! Tucked in the middle of a little strip in Davis, this place is well worth the trip. They are definitely Mexican themed, but you have options that aren't Mexican at all (buffalo chicken, cheesesteak, etc.). They are also vegetarian friendly, with some straight veggie options and several with meat substitutes. We started with the guacamole - plentiful for $6 and seasoned up just right. The entrée was the Hellbender Burrito - a spicy play on a buffalo chicken wrap with chunks of chicken, buffalo sauce, blue cheese sauce, and rice. It was huge!! I could only finish about half of it (and I did a pretty messy job of that half). I'd almost recommend splitting it, but you'd definitely have to fork and knife it if you tried to cut it in half. There were several other burritos that I wanted to try, so I'll be back. Word to the wise - check the hours before you make the trek. They aren't open every day and they occasionally close for a week just because they want to.

Pretty awesome little place in the middle of ski country. Had great food, wonderful service, and just a really cool vibe. Their draft selection was really good too. Definitely high on my recommendation list!! Weirdly, I go white water rafting every year, and while that too is in the middle of nowhere, WV, there are amazing restaurants there too! You keep it up WV!! Certainly know how to pair food and adventure together!

Another one of the amazing finds in the small town of Davis West Virginia. You wouldn't think of seeing a Mexican place here but it is phenomenal. The burrito is so big you will certainly leave full. The homemade salsa is also fantastic, get some to go and you won't be disappointed.

Not as awesome as I was expecting from some of the other reviews. Service and atmosphere were good. Guacamole was decent. Burritos were huge, but 90% white rice, and just really didn't taste good.

Stay away from the chicken. The guac was good but the chips are nothing special. The admiral burrito is excellent. Don't get the Hellbender.

We were staying at Blackwater Falls State Park for the weekend so I looked into some places to eat a couple meals at. I found Hellbenders in a review of the park itself, and read through the reviews here. I was happy to find a) Mexican food, b) vegetarian options, and c) a local joint. The food was boring. It was bland. The queso was Velveeta. The treehugger burrito I got had what appeared to be frozen veggies in it, not fresh at all. The slaw on the side was good, but a weird pairing with a burrito. Our waitress seemed busy and preoccupied, even though it did not seem busy in the restaurant. It took quite a while for drink refills and a request for a straw. Overall it was a disappointing dining experience. :(

This is a great little burrito place. I checked out the reviews on here before visiting, browsing through the pictures and making note of every one that mentioned the size of the burritos. They looked and sounded like something from Chipotle, so I was instantly won over. When we got there, though, I couldn't believe it when our hippie server brought out these monsters. They were HUGE, definitely bigger than Chipotle, and the pictures don't do them justice. They add a small side serving of tortilla chips on the plate, which is almost comical, kind of in a taunting, I-bet-you-can't-finish-that-burrito-AND-these-chips kinda way. As a vegetarian, I was curious to try the seitan (mock beef) burrito; while it was flavorful, the chewy texture put me off a little. I finished about half of it and had to take it home. The place itself is really cute, and has a sort of funky, laid-back charm. You seat yourself in one of two rooms, and the walls are adorned in abstract art and a framed poster of information on the place's namesake, the hellbender salamander. To give somewhat of an idea: I could imagine this homey little joint nestled in the downtown mall of Charlottesville, VA. If you're passing through Davis, WV, you won't find a better burrito place, well, anywhere. Definitely give it a try!

We ate here on New Year's day on the way out of Canaan Valley. Didn't really know what to expect but we all were in the mood for a good burrito. This place did not disappoint. Atmosphere is eclectic and inviting. Waitress was nice and efficient and most importantly the burritos were very good. They are big but very tasty. All the ingredients tasted fresh so I"m not sure what one earlier review is talking about. If you are up in Davis, you need to try this place.

My companion and I eagerly entered Hellbender Burritos after a strenuous hike. With low expectations (considering the size of the town) and hearty appetites, we were surprised to meet a meal that we could not ravenously devour. We ordered two burritos. The "Lost Hiker" was lost on us, indeed. The contents (I guess there were mushrooms and lettuce in there) were missing within the copious amount of supposedly homemade dressing. Even though I chose it from the menu, It looked so gross I could not bear to try it. My partner reluctantly ate half of it. I was stuck with our other choice, the "Gendarme." Similar problem, it was overflowing with liquid, that which tasted like Velveeta cheese. I salvaged some seitan from it (yay, one star for seitan!), but could hardly detect mushrooms, peppers or onions. The chips were stale. The hot sauces were lame. And the bathroom was dirty and lacking supplies. Eek!

This place has huge servings for a great price. I think my family of 4 could have made a meal of just one burrito. The shrimp hellbender is definitely something different (and surprisingly good). Their classic burritos are pretty standard, but still a good value. The place gets crowded so don't be surprised if you have to wait for a table.

If you have an appetite, then this is THE place. The burritos are about as thick as a girls softball, and are loaded with great ingrediants. They have several wonderful suggestions, or you can customize and create your own gastronomical epic meal. You will not leave hungry! We had 12 guys eat lunch here, and only one guy was able to finish his goliath. Great variety of other items, as well as numerous vegetarian dishes. In addition a small selection of draft beer, wonderful appetizers, and awesome chips. Suggest wearing those loose fitting jeans - cause you will need expansion room after eating here!

Nice atmosphere. Lots of different types of burritos. I did not like the hellbender but then again I forgot that I don't like buffalo sauce so it's my fault. I would be interested in going back and trying some of the other burritos. In my large group of friends I saw some interesting burritos. Nice atmosphere- I'll be back.

What a treat! We stumbled across Hellbender only because some other place was closed. That was GREAT LUCK. My wife and I became instant fans of the place: she because of the quality of the food and I for the choices of beer. Our waitress was all alone that day with a house FULL of customers, but she managed to keep everyone fed and happy. We had our burritos in a bowl - and were both delighted to taste the freshness in the food. Despite the massive quantity, they really stress their quality. Kudos to Hellbender!

Good service, bartender was really nice. Food was okay. My wife and I ordered a burrito to share and the chicken was not seasoned which should hold the flavor in a burrito. Queso and chips were fine. Price was fair.

This spot is DEFINITELY a must to check out when you find yourself in Canaan Valley. Their food is like American-new fused with Mexican. Well... let's put it more bluntly-- it is hippie Mex-American. More American than Mexican. A burrito that is named "treehugger" does trigger an image of long hair with braids with tie-dye shirts (the bartender has a braided ponytail, so it is pretty close). And "Treehugger" was what I had-- I love it. (However I will make sure to make a request to remove olives from my burrito-- I hate olives!). It got broccoli, mushrooms, guacamole, and pico de gallo... my favorites! Try their cilantro lime rice! veryyyyyyy good. Will definitely try make my own cilantro lime rice at home. The only thing that I was SLIGHTLY disappointed... they do offer tortilla chips.....with a side dish of coleslaw. Com'on, no salsa? Boo. But YAY for Delicious Lima-shaped Burritos that are stuffed creatively! I definitely will suggest this spot for anybody who is driving through to get up to Canaan Valley or Blackwater Falls. BONUS: THIS PLACE IS VEGETARIAN-FRIENDLY!!! West Virginia, you have won my heart. You are now above Virginia.

My co-worker and I had a fantastic meal here last night. She eats meat and I am vegetarian, and there were great options for both of us. Everything was delish, the staff was friendly, the place was warm and (with the exception of the clown pictures on the ladies room) has a neat, funky decor.

Awesome place, must eat here if you are in Davis. Great non-traditional and traditional burritos, microbrews and cozy atmosphere!

My husband and I had lunch here on the way to Blackwater Falls State Park. Our server was kind and attentive, and we enjoyed the rustic atmosphere of the place. The food, on the other hand, left much to be desired. The "queso", as an earlier reviewer mentioned, is Velveeta cheese. Blech! The burritos are so big that a family of four could split one. They are not big on flavor though. I ordered the Hellbender, which was comprised of mostly rice, some bland chunks of chicken that were unseasoned and seemingly boiled, buffalo sauce that barely had a kick, and their housemade Bleu cheese dressing that tasted like ranch; there was not so much as a hint of Bleu cheese in that dressing. Thank goodness they offer decent desserts, although I suspect they do not make the in house. They had a chocolate peanut butter cheesecake that was very good. There are not many choices of places to eat in downtown Davis, so I can understand why this place has so many reviews, but the food is definitely subpar.

The burritos ARE massive--I characterized them as morbidly obese. My dining companion and I could barely finish half of them. I got the "Hellbender" and found the hot sauce a little overwhelming, which made for a very monochromatic burrito in terms of flavor and texture. And the store-bought chips are very "meh." The fish quesadilla was fantastic though. It was filled with Tilapia smoked with applewood--smoked on the premises, according to the server. If I had stopped at the quesadilla and a beer, I would have gone away very satisfied. Overall three stars and a nice place to spend part of a rainy winter afternoon, next to the wood stove.

We stopped in at Hellbender while on vacation at Black Bear Resort. The menu is lengthy with a good range of choices. We started with spicy, black bean and cheese tortilla. This was delicious! Just enough spice and flavor. After many mind changes and much deliberation I decided on a standard burrito with black bean and seitan added along with the lime/cilantro rice. The burrito was OK at best. The ratios were a bit off in my opinion. Too little black beans and too much rice. The seitan was OK, but chunks were bigger than I prefer for a burrito and texture was a bit off. My wife had the Lost Hiker which consisted of blue cheese, mushroom and guacamole along with the other regulars. Same issues with the first, a little bland and not proportioned well. We really wanted to love the food! It wasn't awful by any means, just wasn't anything special. The atmosphere was perfect; comfortable and had a nice fire going. The beer selection was good and we stuck to some of the local stuff (Cold Trail and the IPA). Owner (we think) was very pleasant and helpful. We bought a mug and a CD from a local artist. Both very cool. We will give it another shot the next time we are in the area!

Friends invited our family skiing at their place in Timberline. Davis, the closest town, has few dining options. We took the girls and grabbed burritos and tacos at Hellbenders. Typical cozy throwback local ski town restaurant. Not many seats and it is a "seat yourself" format so be sure to grab a table if you see an open one. The Buffalo burrito is huge, could be shared. Heavy on the rice, but the chicken was moist and the Buffalo sauce had a nice kick. The tacos and chips and salsa are pretty pedestrian. Decent beer selection and a pleasant waitress made for a solid place to grab a bit in a town with limited options.

Massive burritos, great beer selection, super friendly staff. After skiing, a day on the mountain bike, or coming off Dolly Sods, this is a must stop.

Got the Admiral. It was huge, couldn't finish it. If you're in the area, you GOTTA stop in this place.

In Canaan Valley, dining options fall squarely in the slim to none category. If you are in the mood to cook after a long day on the slopes, this won't pose much of a problem for you. If you are like me and prefer to have some else do the hard work, while you work on tomorrow's hangover, then you need to visit Hellbender's. The food is decent and cheap, the beer selection is good. The chips, particularly could be better. The cilantro lime rice has a little too much lime. But the steak, chicken, and pulled pork are all tender and served in generous portions.

Food was good, service was beyond terrible. We sat waiting for over an hour after we ordered. When asked why it was taking so long the waitress was plain rude.

When you think about West Virginia, do images of massive, great tasting burritos come to mind. After eating here they will. Along Rt. 32 is the town of Davis, West Virginia, home of Hellbender Burritos. While not ethnic by any means it is an American twist on burritos and quesadillas. Appetizers include chips and salsa, guacamole or queso, quesadillas and other rotating morsels. The chips are slightly salted round tortilla chips. For the main course there are pre-designed burritos, make your own burritos, tacos and quesadillas. Some of the specialty burritos include the Admiral, a burrito stuffed with chicken, bacon, beans, guacamole, salsa, cheese and lettuce, the Hoodoo Voodoo, the Face Plant, the Lost Hiker, the Hellbender, Goofy Foot, Shovel Head, Gravity Check and the Gendarme. Some of these contains items such as barbecue sauce, Fritos, TVP, broccoli and cilantro lime rice. The Admiral is a avalanche of diverse flavors hitting into you, in a good way. Desserts include grasshopper cheesecake, a mint chocolate chip cheesecake, and key lime pie. All of the ingredients are fresh and this shows. The chicken is chunks of grilled chicken, The guacamole made fresh daily and the fresh squeezed lemonade goes well with anything on the menu. While the pre designed burritos are amazing, the depth of choices lends itself to the make your own burrito. The atmosphere is friendly. In the front there is a wood burning stove for the cold winters. In the back there is a fish tank full of fishing lures, and a large wooden statue of a hellbender holding a burrito. The walls are made of wood recycled from old barns and this makes the whole place feel cozy. THe next time you are in West Virginia be sure to stop by Hellbender Burritos.

Delicious! This place has great food (I've eaten here over 30 times) at a good value and friendly staff. You must eat here. Don't pay attention to the bad reviews because they are just silly. Yeah, silly. It's not Mexican food either, Yelp. It's all kinds of great stuff in a tortilla. You can build your own too. How excellent!

burritos are enormous, but good. I stopped here on the road and was elated to have a down home - if hippy - place to eat with great food and friendly locals. I would hang out here again and would recommend to all.

Cool little place in Davis, WV. The burritos are absolutely huge, and I was impressed by how much steak there was in their version of the cheesesteak. The atmosphere is great and fits the town perfectly. This seems like a great place to grab a beer and a bite after a day on the trail or the slopes. Recommended.

Found this place cause, well, it has a geocache in the back. We came the first day... we came every day afterwards. The food is fantastic. Hippie Tex Mex is absolutely an accurate description. Wonderful veggie options - and good for those meat eaters as well. The place is warm and welcoming with a wood stove in the front room. The bathroom has toys from the x files, a poster from the x files that says "I want to believe" and a cover of some fake newspaper about how rednecks captured Osama. The bar has the WV game on with lots of fans watching. Service was great even when crowded. I would go back to Canaan just to go to Hellbenders!

Fun place with outstanding food and great beers. The place was packed at 6 pm on a Saturday night. The hubs and I sat at the tiny bar and ordered food. A little uncomfortable for eating dinner, but the bartender was great. We drank the local beers from Mountain State Brewing Company, and the bartender recommended an IPA for hubs to try. I had the Gendarme, which is like a cheesesteak in a burrito and the hubs had the shovel head with pulled pork. Huge burritos--prepare to leave stuffed. Creative burrito combinations that can be easily adapted to vegetarian.

Massive burritos with unusual combinations of ingredients. I had the Faceplant, featuring chili, rice, queso, and Fritos--who knew Fritos were such a delicious burrito filling? I may have to try that one at home. The bean dip appetizer was a letdown, though--cold dip and unremarkable tortilla chips. Still, I enjoyed my lunch here and it's certainly worth a visit if you're staying in Davis.

The place should re-consider their setup. There's very limited seating and there is nowhere to wait for a table without being in the poor servers' way. There's a "lounge" upstairs to wait in, but it was crowded and no where to sit/stand. We huddled near the bar and had to move every 30 seconds to make way for someone passing through. We were told it would be a 40 minute wait and it turned out to be an hour and 40 minute wait. In fact, from putting our name on the list to walking out it took over 2.5 hrs. For that reason, I won't be going back. The food was good. Good guac and hefty portions. Some of our party had burritos that were mostly rice. But others didn't. I would say only go with a small party and sit and eat at the bar. It's much faster and the beer is good and cheap.

We loved this place. Great food, cheap (but great!) beer. Just what you need after a hard day on the slopes or in the great outdoors. The wait may be a little long for a table, but you'll be very glad you stuck it out!

We came to this place on a tip that they could do gluten-free. My burrito was huge, incredibly fresh, and great. My girlfriend's burrito bowl was gluten free and pretty nice too. Friendly service (although a little but slow). Check out the men's bathroom if you go.

We've been traveling to Canaan Valley, WV since 1998. It is not a booming metropolis, which is what we love about it, and this means there aren't a whole lot of places at which to eat. Hellbenders opened a couple years ago. Our experiences before this last trip (in May 2011) were uneven at Hellbenders, skewing toward disappointing, with indifferent service and mediocre food. But wait! This time we visited Hellbenders twice and found it quite good. Our servers were very friendly and on the ball, and the food was delicious. The burritos are gigantic and, while not wildly memorable, taste great. We tried the smoked trout quesadilla and it was a revelation with gently smoked white fish and mellow cheese between grilled tortillas, served with a side of chunky, spicy salsa - very good. The bean crisp appetizer is also wonderful and makes for a more moderate sized meal for one. Kids menu items are simple and good; my son's burrito had plentiful large pieces of chicken breast - no skimping. Hellbenders was willing to "hold that" and "could you put that on the side" when asked. The local beers were great. Desserts (key lime pie, chocolate cheesecake) were yummy, if a tad small. Overall, solid performance on two visits and we are very likely to return, the next time we find ourselves in beautiful Canaan Valley!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
