Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Fantastic food. Delightful owners.

I have heard so much about this place and when I finally went there I was disappointed. The food was just OK. The margarita sucked.

Just outstanding! Fantastic fresh salsa and excellent Margaritas! We shared 4 different meals but the Grandma's cheese covered beef enchiladas were incredible. Also loved the white chicken enchiladas. Parking is abundant and close. The music was a lot of fun but my girls LOVED the decorations and atmosphere. Just AWESOME! We will definitely be back!

I like this place great tasting food and simple menu. But it's Mexican, done right. 1/10 times my food was not the normal excellence but it was a weekend and slow but other than that.... Great food company and service

Really good. Not the standard burrito and taco fare. This restaurant is not just the standard taco and burrito fare. Sure, you'll get a bowl of chips and a bowl of salsa while you look over the menu. Sure, they have a decent selection of Mexican beers available (not just Corona, they have Tecate and Sol and more!). And yes, it's Mexican food. But that's where it ends. I was tempted for the carne asada, but I'd had red meat for lunch. So I ordered Grandma Juleta's Special Enchiladas. A ginormous platter arrived a few minutes later. Apparently made from SCRATCH, this was three corn tortillas with a red chile sauce that was topped with melted cheese and then some sliced avocados on top. It was excellent! When I go back (and when I'm next in Charleston I will absolutely go back), I'll have that carne asada. And I'll save room for the flan.

Great service, friendly outgoing (James?). The food is just ok. The guac was bland and could use some onion, garlic and cilantro and maybe a touch of cayenne. And their salsa could use the same, bland and tasteless. My guest had two beef tacos with beans and rice... satisfactory. I had the all white meat chicken enchiladas. Also ok. I would go again but need to see them step it up a notch in the flavor dept for me to come back on a regular basis.

Finally got an opportunity to stop by for dinner and I was not disappointed. I enjoyed the meal, had a great server and got a chance to catch up with an old friend. If you have not tried this place, you should. P.S. I loved the guacamole

Good food, great service. Food tad overpriced but the salsa is really good. Most Mexican joints have dry rice and thick refried beans but theirs was very fresh and didn't seem like it came from a can.
(4)Kevin G.
Very good carne asada and guacamole. Also, the friendliest, most helpful wait staff I've ever seen.
(5)Scott C.
Staff was amazing the food was all made from scratch and delicious.

Yelp led me to this little hole in the wall Mexican place, and I was very pleased. I had the shredded beef enchiladas, and they're the best enchiladas I've had in quite a while. Just the right amount of sauce -- apparently here, they don't feel the need to drown their dishes in sauce like other Mexican restaurants in WV. The staff was also very friendly.

Today, I gave Mi Cocina De Amor a third chance. I've wanted to believe this place is as great as other reviewers make it out to be, and also as great as it appears to be on the restaurants Facebook page. Alas, no such luck. I'll try to keep each of my 3 experiences as short as possible. On the first visit, I came to the restaurant with my family, thinking we'd all enjoy the experience due to the reviews I'd seen and our love of Mexican food. The owners were sitting in the front of the restaurant and greeted us in a friendly manner, which I found to be a special touch. Our waitress was very aloof and didn't seem to know much about the menu at all, which was quite disappointing because we all wanted to try a specialty dish and have a nice direction of what we should order. We ended up getting typical dishes we would order in other Mexican restaurants. I ordered the chicken chimichanga. I thought it was overly fried and drenched in too much greasy cheese (and I love cheese). I also didn't like that you had to choose rice OR beans. A little of both is always nice. My dad wasn't a fan of this either. Overall, very average experience and left uninterested in returning anytime soon. Now to the second visit. This time I brought my out-of-town boyfriend. We visited the restaurant for happy hour and we were only 1 of 2 tables occupying the restaurant. Point being- they were not busy at all. However, there was no visible sign of any wait staff in the dining area. Thinking someone would come out "any minute" turned into TWENTY minutes of no one coming out to check on us, or to see if anyone had come in at all. Very unprofessional. We almost left at that point, but suddenly needed a drink more than ever. Our waitress was nice but did not apologize or ask how long we'd been waiting. The margaritas were delicious. This is one of the only things the restaurant has going for it. My boyfriend thought his house margarita was overly strong, though (which is rare for him to complain about). We ordered a quesadilla to share with our afternoon drinks. It was tasty, but took pretty long to come out considering how simple it was and how empty the restaurant was. I was also disappointed that it did not come with any toppings such as some simple sour cream or salsa. By the time we were through, my boyfriend requested that I not take him there again. Today I had a craving for fresh guacamole (this is the second thing, besides the margaritas, that the restaurant has going for it). Mi Cocina de Amor is very close to where I live so I decided to call in a pickup order. I've heard they do a lot of take out, so I figured maybe this is an area in which they shine and my experience would be different this time. The phone rang for a very long time before someone picked up. The waitress was nice and asked me specifically what I wanted, including if I wanted my chicken tacos to be soft or hard. I clearly told her 'soft'. I also ordered a side of guacamole which is why I ordered in the first place. She said it would be ready in 10 mins and my order was under $10 which was reasonable. Service was prompt and it was ready when I arrived 10-15 mins later. That was the good part. However, when I got home and opened up the container, I discovered that I received hard tacos. The opposite of what I requested. Everything was squished together in one corner of the box, which was messy. The beans tasted as if they'd been sitting for hours and my tacos didn't have much flavor at all, which was disappointing. I would also like to note that the owners were not present during my last two visits, as they have probably been busy with the opening of their second location. It seems clear to me that the wait staff has really taken advantage of their absence as all they seem to do is socialize and take smoke breaks, rather than paying attention to the customers and making sure everyone has a positive experience. You might want to hire some more responsible and professional employees. In conclusion, the moral of my story is this: three strikes you're out, Mi Cocina de Amor. I won't be coming back unless someone drags me there.

Best Mexican food in Chucktown, no question. It's authentic Mexican -- if you want the generic "red sauce on everything" Mexican, visit just about any other Mex place in town. I really love their Verde sauce items. Specials change often, so you won't get bored. Definitely try the Prickly Pear margarita and the flan. And ceviche. And the guacamole. And...oh, everything is delicious!!! Also, the staff is awesome. They handled my bridal shower like family!

Love the food and the service!!! Paul was great!!! It's so quaint and I love it! Not big but not too small too!!!
(4)Amy V.
Fresh ingredients, flavorful, excellent wait staff... We loved the tacos! Wow! My friend says this is his new favorite restaurant in Charleston! And the owners have a social conscience, loving spirit, and have created a sweet, eclectic happy space. A little oasis with great taste!!

Really surprised by all the bad reviews. I've been here about ten times and always left happy. I love the taco suave with beef, but their taco salad is also great (if only for the dressing which is amazing)... I'd order that salad a lot more often if it wasn't just a bunch of iceberg lettuce. My husband loves fish taco Fridays & the enchiladas Julia. Margaritas are super tasty and the prices are reasonable.

Mexican food made by white people. Hard to sum it up any other way. The service was good, the place was decorated nicely, it was clean, and had plenty of (metered) parking. The music selection was a little irritating (some droningly slow cover of a Crosby Stills and Nash song seemed to go on forever) and it was too loud right beside my head. The food was fresh and well portioned, but that is the best part of it. It was mostly bland and lacked the staples of mexican food (cheese sauce and seasoning!). The salsa, bland. The guacamole, tasty! Topos Salad with Carne Seca, bland (until you discover the beans under the tostoda, TASTY!). Chicken quesadilla, lotta yellow cheese with bland, watery chicken. I was disappointed in the food when this place carries 4.5 Yelp Stars. Upon further review, the "Reviews not currently recommended" tell more truth about this place than the raving "this place is awesome" reviews. I will give this place another chance some other day. Can't say the same for my wife.

I feel bad for what I'm about to say because it's going to come off pretty harsh even though it is undeniable truth. This is by far the worst Mexican food in Charleston and Charleston has a lot of bad Mexican food. I can say that with confidence because ever since moving to Charleston this past summer, I've been on a search for decent Mexican food. I've tried just about all of them and none were as bad as this place. My first test is always the guacamole. See my photo, it tasted as bad as it looks. The salsa was bitter. Everything was so salty. You have to pay $1.39 for sour cream. I got tacos. How can anyone mess up tacos? And where are these positive reviews coming from? Are we really talking about the same place?! I can agree more with the eleven or so hidden reviews of this restaurant. In the end, I wanted to love this place. I wanted it to be the Mexican restaurant to end my search. Unfortunately, I'll never be back.

After hearing mostly great things about Mi Cocina, my wife and I decided to give it a shot. To put it bluntly, it was one of the worst meals I have ever paid for. Starting off with the good...the service was decent and the staff was friendly, the place was clean and the decor is interesting enough. Unfortunately, it was all downhill after that. To start, the salsa they provide with the chips is very bland and had a bitter taste to it. Every Mexican restaurant does their salsa differently, some better than others, but this was nearly inedible. I was able to overlook this at first, but the guacamole was just as bad. In addition to clearly being scooped from a large container with an ice cream style scoop and looking less than fresh, it was so salty that we literally could not finish it. Sadly, we had the same issue with the rest of the food we ordered. I got the Enchiladas La Julia and again, the entire plate was so incredibly salty that I couldn't eat half of it. Allowing something like that out of your kitchen is a disgrace, as the chefs should be tasting their food before serving it. If my complaints only ended there....the shredded chicken in my enchiladas was bland and full of liquid, almost as if it had been soaked in water and served directly from there. Refried beans were also very runny. I truly hate to be so picky, but I really, really wanted to like this place and the entire meal was below par. It's a cute little shop, not a "typical" Mexican restaurant and the menu actually looks good. However, they seem to have set the bar much too high for themselves and are a bit overconfident in their food, as is reflected by their higher than usual prices. And come on...you have to pay an additional $1.50 for sour cream? What Mexican restaurant does that!? I will almost always give a restaurant a second chance if I have a bad experience there, with the understanding that I could have just ordered something I didn't like, chef was having an off day, etc. However, this is one that I will undoubtedly not be trying again, as I have no desire to spend another $30 on lunch for two people, only to walk away feeling like the entire meal was a complete waste. Do yourself a favor and take your business elsewhere.

I had heard so many great things about this restaurant and was very excited to try it. We went with my family (wife 2 kids) along with my sister and brother-in-law. We were all VERY disappointed. The service was average and the restaurant was clean with a nice atmosphere but the food was either bland or overly salty. The Guacamole was brown and over slaty. The salsa was bland. There seemed to be American cheese on the chimichangas. There are many options for Mexican food in Charleston and this is the worst of them. We would never go back.

Service was a little slow to start but she got going and the food is excellent. Second location opened recently downtown.
(4)Patrick S.
Mi Cocina de Amor is hands down the best, most authentic, mexican food in the area. Everything I've had is delicious, and the service is always excellent. I highly recommend both the westside and downtown locations. You won't be disappointed!
(5)Tg T.
The guac is the best. The blue agave margarita really is worth it. Delicious authentically fresh dishes. So much more than "Mexican".

TASTY SALSA BUT EPIC FAIL ALL AROUND! I walked to a hobby shop that was closed for lunch, go figure, so I decided to have lunch in the same area. I noticed a sign on the side of a building from the parking lot about Hog & Dogs, I was intrigued, so I walked over. To my surprise, it was a new Mexican Restaurant. It was packed and was greeted by a female busser explaining that this is the busiest they've ever been. Must be something good, the special of the day, three cheese enchiladas, done. I got chips and salsa right away.... very good, nice flavor with a mild little kick. I was done with my first bowl of salsa before I even got my drink order. Ok, busiest day ever, here is my order (for 3 cheese enchiladas) I got it, but I waited 45 minutes for enchiladas stuffed with cold cheese and sour cream? topped with a nice adobe sauce with melted cheese on top (microwaved). BIG FAIL! If you don't have enough pre-made special, tell the servers, don't feed cold wannabes on the fly. Tell servers or busser to give me my drink now, not after the first bowl of salsa is gone. If it wasn't for the tasty salsa, I would've walked out. Where is the Hog & Dogs? Lose the sign on the side of your building! I may try this place again.... but I'll wait to see if they fix the problems.

I think the first guy to review this place must have been off his rocker. I found the food to be excellent, the kind I used to eat back home in Arizona. We had the guacamole tostada and the Chile Verde tostada as appetizers. The roasted green chiles in the chile verde were so flavorful and the guacamole was chunky and delicious. You don't find guacamole or chile verde like this in the Charleston/Huntington area. Our entrees were the Enchiladas Blancas and the Carne Asada. Both were well done and I haven't had a tortilla like that since leaving AZ, stretchy and delicious. Chef/Owner Tony came out and talked to us a couple of times. He's a great guy who's trying to offer fresh, authentic Mexican food here in West Virginia. We couldn't be happier.

I grew up in the Southwest, and never tasted Mexican this good in years! For those of you posting bad reviews, you obviously have never tasted authentic Mexican food. I will be back!

Absolutely loved this restaurant. The food was great and so was the service.

Overall, this place is alright. After a previous bout with food poisoning (and subsequent hospitalization) after eating at another Mexican establishment in the Charleston area, this is one of two "Mexican" joints I WILL frequent these days. First, the positives! The salsa is flavorful and has heat to it, which I like. The carne seca burrito was tasty but be sure to order it "loaded" so you can get the guacamole, sour cream and red enchilada sauce on top or you may very well end up with a naked burrito. While naked burritos are usually a good thing, this particular burrito benefits from the toppings since it's all meat on the inside. The refried beans are the best you'll get at a restaurant in the area -- seasoned well and seemingly homemade. The red enchilada sauce is very flavorful and seems to be made from scratch as well. The location on the west side is convenient with various places to park nearby including metered street parking. The waitstaff is courteous and attentive. Unfortunately the guacamole, while homemade, is under-seasoned (in my opinion). The tortilla chips are a bit too fried/greasy and just so everyone knows, only the first basket is on the house. That's not a deal breaker for me but I know it is for others. The biggest drawback for this place is that they don't have beer/wine/booze. Again, that's not a big deal to me but there's a large contingency of restaurant-goers in the Charleston area who enjoy a margarita or beer (or two) with their enchiladas. These issues aside, this place is very promising. I don't feel like trash after eating here, which is more than I can say for some of the other "Mexican" restaurants in town.

Restaurant was nice and clean. Food well prepared and fresh. Only complaint would be that the staff, although friendly, was so interested in socializing with people that service was slightly lacking. We asked for take home boxes twice before actually getting any, and waited quite some time for our check. All the while the many waitresses in the I crowded restaurant continued to socialize. We would probably try it again, especially since food was good quality/not your typical slapped together Mexican food. Appeared to be made when ordered not pre made food waiting in the back
