I could have sworn that I reviewed this place when I was last in the area a half year ago. It deserves a review from someone who doesn't live there, 'cause you can do a lot better than this pretentious restaurant in what must have been a warehouse. The loud, golf-business man-boys a the bar wouldn't have put me off of a better meal, but the trout from a reclaimed coal-mine (I am not making this up) with capers wasn't worth the high-for-the-region prices. If you you find yourself looking for a good meal in Bridgeport, Las Trancas has food that's just as tasty, with better service and, on some nights, a fine mariachi band. If you're up for a short drive, get thee into Clarksburg to 4th for some very reasonable priced, but still excellent food, and great service. Did I mention that 4th Street has the best fried oysters I have ever eaten anywhere? Yes, in my review of 4th Street!

This is my favorite restaurant in Bridgeport, WV. I have eaten here numerous times and have never been disappointed. It has a French cuisine with an extensive wine list. The roasted red pepper soup is out of this world! The steaks are always delicious and I would also recommend the scallops and the fisherman's stew. When dining here on weekends you will need to make reservations.

Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon for a late lunch. This place is a breath of fresh air in an area dominated by heavy Italian fare and chain restaurants. My boyfriend raved about the Warm Potato and French Sausage Salad Lyonnaise. I had the French DIp, which was nice--great bread, good quality meat/cheese. the bread here is terrific, and I grew up with fresh homemade bread as regular part of our meals. It is light, with a nice crust and good flavor. Beer selection is diverse, although the server had limited knowledge about this. Two things cause me to give this place 4 rather than 5 stars. Dessert was the brownie, which was recommended by the waitstaff. The brownie was large, but the ice cream accompanying was way too small. Waitstaff was too frequently at the table, intruding on our space and making the meal feel rushed.

07/28/10 Simply amazing! Came here w/ Mom, two sisters, a niece, and a nephew for lunch. Provence Market Cafe is a restaurant that sits adjacent to a "market" where you may browse over racks of wines. There are other boutiques in this "strip mall" of sorts (it's really a house or two w/ a patio... you have to visit to see what I mean!), but for the most part, the market is just a tiny room where the said wine bottles AND the coffee machine, and all of the accompanying flavored syrups and mixes, are kept. The restaurant itself is split into two rooms- a main dining room and a bar area w/ chairs and two or three extra tables. There's a mini-fridge that contains flavored sodas bottled in France, which might be interesting to some of you... The dining room was very dark, even though it was still around 12p, 1p when we arrived, but thankfully, we were seated at the tables (gathered to make one large setting) next to a large window. There were a few tables that had makeshift privacy curtains that made the whole room look half-done, but no matter. We liked where we were, and we were hungry! One of my sisters spotted tuna carpaccio ($11) under the apps menu, which we all have never tried before, so that was a definite order. Two of us wanted to try the Apples, Walnuts, and Bleu Cheese salad ($8) , and another had a house salad, which had accompanied the Ravioli Provencal ($10) that she'd ordered for her and son to share. I also ordered a Croque Monsieur ($7, w/ house-made chips) and an Eggplant Roulade ($10, w/ side salad) for Mom, sisters, and I to share, and niece wanted to try the Filet Burger ($9), with brie as her choice of cheese. While we waited for our orders to arrive, we sipped on three glasses of wine ($6-7 each) and had some complimentary bread. (Just by the look of that bread's crust, I knew it would be good. I was wrong... it was fantastic!) The tuna carpaccio and salads arrived together-- I loved the salad w/ the apples, walnuts, and blue cheese! The walnut vinaigrette was light, and we could definitely detect the walnut flavor in it-- a must-try! The tuna carpaccio was really of high-quality. Sliced thin, yet they delivered lots of flavor- another hit! The house salads were OK (reported by sis, her daughter, and son). The chips were good, but I didn't dwell on them too much since there were all the other great food to try! I didn't have a bite of the Filet burger; Sister's son didn't care for the brie, but I didn't expect him to, since he's a very picky eight-year old. I can't recall if 10-yr. old niece liked it... The eggplant roulade was the runaway hit for me! Loved the bite it had, both in flavor and in texture... I also liked the way the cheese were crisped in some areas... truly remarkable! The only imperfection here was the size of the entree! Five tiny bites, maybe six :( Next time we dine here, I'm going to order two of these just for MYSELF. The others can get their own! LOL As for the Croque monsieur... Well... it wasn't great. Not even OK. The bread wasn't even warmed, much less toasted; the Swiss cheese was almost non-existent; and I couldn't even taste the ham. Such a waste of ingredients, and I didn't want to "spend" my calories eating this entree, so I just had it bagged to-go. As for the ravioli, the ratatouille was chunky, and very tasty, but I thought that the ravioli needed more filling. Sister enjoyed them, which was good, bec. I wanted to get back to the roulade! For dessert, we tried the espresso cheesecake and the limoncello cake w/ white chocolate shavings and framboise syrup. While we all began by loving both selections equally, at the end, we'd finished the cheesecake (no crumbs!) and still had half of the lemon cake for leftovers. You could say that our brains finally received the message from our stomachs that we were full, but honestly, had we ordered two slices of that espresso cheesecake, there would not have been anything left to take home! It was already decided that we will have more of the cheesecake when we return! The black coffee served was bold and very, very good! The total, w/ two extra glasses of wine (Riesling; $7 each), sodas, teas, milk, and 20% tip, came to around $160 or so. A bit pricey for lunch, but it was WORTH it!! We spent almost two hours enjoying each other's company and some great food... and we can't wait to go back and do it again! The service was very friendly, and the owner even came out and conversed w/ us for a long while! We even spoke of how she did a short weekly broadcast on a local TV channel, where she'd share a recipe, or hold demonstrations for her very young viewers (around my niece and nephew's ages). We told her that she had a great restaurant here, which I think she already knew, but she showed enough humility to not come across as obnoxious, which we appreciated. (Note: Don't forget to check out the two restrooms... so whimsical!)

I've travelled all over the world, so imagine my surprise to find such a lovely French restaurant tucked away in Bridgeport, WV. My husband and I did not have reservations, yet we were seated almost immediately. The atmosphere in the restaurant is very warm and eclectic, like many of the regular customers we observed. The hostess filled our water glasses and went over the specials of the day. She described the Lobster Macaroni special as a big bowl of warm love, and based on her enthusiasm, I believed her. Our waitress was super efficient and just as warm as the hostess, referring to my husband as "Love" as she set his cup of espresso in front of him. We started our meal with the Clams Marseille. Let me just say that was probably one of the most delicious dishes I have ever tasted. Had I know it was that good, I would not have ordered anything else. The salad before our meal was the perfect size and it was served with a very light coating of champagne vinaigrette. For my main entree, I ordered the Coquilles St. Jacques Provencale. While I felt the fresh vegetables on the side were exquisite, I felt the scallops were good. My husband ordered the New York Strip Surf Crowned (crabmeat, bleu cheese, buerre blanc). He enjoyed each and every bite immensely!! The steak was cooked to perfection and the blue schemes was not too overpowering. I feel like I should mention the vegetables again - perfectly cooked!! I don't particularly care for cooked carrots, but these were roasted to perfection. For dessert, we shared the Creme Brûlée. Omg. My husband does not typically have a sweet tooth, but after one bite he wished he had ordered his own. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone I know!!! I hope we have a reason to come back this way just so we can eat there again.

What a hidden gem of a place. I would have only found out about this thru Yelp. The food was fantastic and the service made you feel like you were already a lifetime customer. Both my wife and I had Steak Au Pouvie and it was great. This is place we will come to regular now.
(5)CC C.
I absolutely love this place. Having spent a lot of time in Nantucket with its delicious food and outrageous prices, I love coming home to WV and getting a gourmet meal at a reasonable price. Every visit the food is on point. I've tried a few different sandwiches on the lunch menu, including French dip and their burger, and I haven't had a complaint anytime I've gone. Service is speedy, it's never super busy, and the food is beyond delicious. No matter how long I'm in town (and sometimes it isn't long) I make a point to stop in here. Excellent. No doubt.
(5)Bob B.
A gem hidden in West Virginia. Stopped on our way south and found this small place on Yelp. Had a beautiful fig appetizer. My wife had duck to die for while I took the last steak special that was outstanding. Surprisingly they had a decent wine list. Highly recommended if you are looking for a pleasent surprise!

Like other reviewers have said, it was a breath of fresh air to find this place 3 mi off the highway in WV. We stopped in for lunch toward the end of a long road trip with our three kids in tow, despite the yelp warning that it was not good for kids. The owner met us a the door and did not seem even a bit snobby at seeing the kids. The inside of the restaurant is definitely white table cloth and low lighting, and we were underdressed, so we asked to sit outside. There is a cute casual patio out back that suited us perfectly. There's no kids menu, so we got the kids potato chips and a croque Monsieur with fries. They were happy with that. I got the roasted red pepper soup with salad and my husband got the ravioli Provençal. My soup was delicious. The house salad was above average but I wished it had a few more things in it--nuts, chopped apples, feta, shredded carrot---something like that would have made it superb. Hubby like the ravioli, but was a bit disappointed at the traditional French portion--only 5 raviolis, and our 18-month-old ate three. Overall, solid 4 star. Good value for the money, but not a low budget place by any means. House made potato chips were $5, ravioli was $10, sandwiches and salads in the $7-10 range for lunch. We would definitely come back.

This is my absolute favorite place to go for lunch! A glass of Malbec, the roasted veggie sandwich with homemade chips, and dessert are my treat!
(5)Jessi P.
This is exactly what you'd expect from French food in the middle of West Virginia. Not bad, but not great. Most things we had were underseasoned, as if butter and fat were all that's needed. The service was great. Everyone was really friendly. Not worth the price though.

This may be our favorite restaurant in WV. A little bit of Europe in Bridgeport WV. We love the chèvre (goat cheese) on crostini, and tapenade on the yeasty french bread, and of course the wine is always excellent. The owner is friendly and welcoming. It is a perfect place for lunch with a good friend. We have come here for our anniversary, and will again. I have recommended this to friends and always get nice feedback. I recommend it unequivocally.

This is the 2nd time I have dined here and I look forward to going back. The ambiance is quite nice - cozy and eclectic. The stuffed mushroom appetizer was terrific - mushrooms stuffed with crabmeat and drenched in butter. One of the best things I've ever eaten. The roast duck was terrific as well - beautifully prepared and served with roast vegetables. My wife's porn chop with spicy green peppercorn sauce was only average - the meat was perhaps overcooked and dry. Dessert was chocolate pot du creme and this was quite nice. All in all a very good meal - and not too expensive either. We will be back for sure.

Delicious food, very pleasant ambience. I do not know the name of the dish I ordered (it was a daily special and not on the menu), but it was a lamb shank over egg noodles, and it was impressive. Unbelievably tender, no knife was ever needed, as it fell right off the bone. And it was savory and delicious. Even people who ordinarily don't like lamb would undoubtedly love this. Excellent. This amazing dish was preceded by a good salad with gorgonzola bleu cheese dressing, with enormous bleus cheese chunks, a rather delicious if decadent salad. This was $30. I was with several other people, and everyone enjoyed their dishes quite a bit. The menu has a fair amount of seafood, and there is an extensive wine list and full bar. The atmosphere was pleasant and cozy, and the service was friendly and attentive. Who could ask for more? Five stars, high recommended.
(5)Anna N.
Provence market is hands down the best place to eat in this area. Don't let the outside appearance fool you, this place is top notch. The scallops (in any meal or special) are always delicious. I get excited to hear the specials because they will never let you down in the variety and taste. Also, always get the roasted red pepper soup when offered! Don't forget to save room for their out of this world chocolate creme brûlée for desert. The service is always exceptional and the owner will always ask you how your meal is. This place makes a city foodie feel more at home in a small town area!
(5)Halcyon M.
A little bit off the beaten path for the I79 traveler but well worth it! Cheerful exterior, cozy and intimate interior, great for pleasure but maybe too much so for business. Super friendly and attentive staff, including the hands-on owner. Showcase for local artist and industry from walls to the Fiesta-ware plates. Food was EVERYTHING! From bread, starters, side salad and entrees; you will not be disappointed! Wide range of options which will appeal to even the pickiest eater. Enjoy!

This review is long overdue considering it has been about a year since I have eaten here. I travel a lot for business all around the country and one of the few luxuries I really enjoy is a good meal. I came here based on Yelp reviews and they were not wrong. I sat at the bar and took the owners recommendation on the Roasted Duckling Michel. Hands down one of the best plates of food I have had in the past year. So much so that when I looked at my travel schedule I wanted to make sure I came in for dinner if my schedule permits this year. My only complaint is this restaurant is not in Los Angeles so I could go more often but if it was I am almost certain it would have a +two hour wait, assuming you could even get in without a reservation.
(5)B H.
Great menu selection and noticeably fresh ingredients. Simple but good wine selection.
(5)Lori M.
You will not find a better restaurant in the northern West Virginia. My husband and I moved to the area from a metropolitan area and pleasantly surprised to find this gem in the adorable city of Bridgeport, WV. Anne the owner of the restaurant makes sure she speaks with every table to make sure their meal was superb. The french-style meals are always fresh and beautifully presented. The wine list is surprisingly extensive. The restaurant is small so I would make recommend making a reservation, it is the perfect place for a night out with friends and for the ultimate date! Loved that we were moving, sad to leave Ann and her restaurant behind.
(5)Renu M.
What a lovely and delicious dinner I had this evening! I was pleasantly surprised. The Coquilles St Jacques Provencales (scallops with Gruyere, wine, garlic butter and herbs) was amazing. Wait staff was knowledgable and attentive. Will definitely return to this hidden gem.
(4)Quintin C.
Why didn't my local friends tell me about this gem? Maybe good that it's a secret, as its so small. Wonderful scallops, great wine list, excellent shrimp and grapefruit luncheon salad.
(5)Frank C.
Great find on a visit to Fairmont. Steaks and dessert were fantastic. Fish stew just OK. Service was excellent.
(5)Christian H.
Excellent choice for my first night in Bridgeport. Delicious lamb stew, kale salad, and bisque soup. Their red pepper soup is creamy and succulent leaving you wanting more. Ann seems to be the owner and is a lovely host. Enjoy it!
(5)John F.
This would be a 5 anywhere, but in WV, it's amazing. Nice selection of wine by the glass. Enough variety of lunch salads that I found it hard to choose. My French sausage and potato salad was as delicious as it was unusual. Lunch was so good we'll arrange an overnight stay the next time we're passing thru to try dinner. Didn't see a dinner menu, but the list of wines by the bottle was broader than you'll find in major cities.

Wow, a real diamond in the rough! My family and I recently dined here and it was an amazing experience. We started off with mussels in white wine sauce which were succulent, warm and perfectly complemented the homemade bread. I also highly recommend the crab brulle appetizer. For main courses two of us chose the 10oz fillet with "Surf Crowned" topping, which is essentially an Oscar style toping with crab, white cream sauce and a little asparagus on the side. The steaks were a baseball style cut (very thick) and cooked to perfection. I've eaten at a lot of high end restaurants and this was up there with the best of them. My sister enjoyed the fresh tuna filet, which is a house favorite and did not disappoint. Our final entree was their roast duck - another perfectly cooked and seasoned dish. For dessert we each had creme brulle that was very good, but I wouldn't say it was outstanding. Perhaps adding a few fresh berries would have spiced it up a little more. To finish things off we each had an espresso and Provence delivered handsomely with a very strong, rich cup. The wait staff was attentive and the manager checked in with us several times. The ambience is ok, but this place gets 5 stars because of the FOOD and wait staff - the two things that really matter. We'll definitely be back for more!!

What a great surprise for this area....fantastic alternative to the southern Italian cuisine that dominates here. So disappointed when Provence was all booked last Sat evening when I was visiting. This is by far the best restaurant in the NorthCentral WV area and worth the price. I make it a point to eat here whenever I'm visiting my family. Delicious French country cuisine..nice menu selection...great wine selection. Cute market next door. Friendly service. When my dad discovered a salmon fixed a particular way was not usually on the menu anymore, they offered to make it for him the next time if he gave them a few days notice. Only wish the restaurant was bigger. Make reservations, especially on Fri and Sat.
(5)Nick W.
My wife and I stopped off here just out of the blue on our way to another destination and loved it! This place was fantastic, I highly recommend it. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is that the ambience leaves some room for the imagination and the waitstaff was a bit slower then I'd have liked, but strictly talking about the FOOD, it was superb. Would definately eat there again and again and again though.
(4)Steve G.
Very good food and Ann is very friendly. A diamond in the rough! Blue cheese soup is a killer...
(4)Giorgio P.
Passing through on our way north, It was a terrific surprise to find a French restaurant in this area providing excellent seafood dishes. After eating in so many "seafood" restaurants on the Outer Banks, NC which featured nothing but deep fried or heavily sauce smothered items, it was a real treat to have fish served with a very light wine sauce and fresh vegetables. And the tapenade and bread were excellent too!
(4)Greg T.
Pricey, but worth every penny. Presentation of plated food outstanding. Atmosphere is slightly cheap, but food far makes up for it. Aromatic, savory, and delicious.
(5)Max F.
You will enjoy an exceptional atmosphere, quality of food, and service at Provence Market Cafe. I have dined here at lunch and dinner twice in the last month and I look forward to my next visit. Navigate to their web site and view the menu. I especially liked their crab cakes. The portions are perfect (not too large) and the prices are reasonable. They are very busy in the evening and they do accept reservations. I recommend making a reservation for dinner.
(5)Chris R.
French. Attire: business casual. White tablecloth dining. My colleague and I went for dinner, and although we were greeted warmly we were without a reservation. The dining room can fill up, so I recommend calling ahead. Luckily the owner was able to seat us in the bar area, which was separate from the dining room and a bit out of the way. But the food made up for our seating location. And Whoa! Very good food! Probably the best place in town for formal dining. The back deck is open in the summer for dining outdoors. Extensive wine list. I would definitely go back. But this place is not cheap, bring the credit card.
(4)Cynthia L.
A nice dining option in the area... And, the BEST scallops I've ever had. This husband/wife team always does a wonderful job w the sea food.
(4)Drew H.
After moving from Baltimore, I was skeptical to think that WV would have places to eat that would get me excited to go out to dinner. Man was I mistaken! Thank you provence for have well prepared, well designed, fresh and delicious food. It a guarantee whenever we have company over. Love it!
(5)Tiffany B.
The best restaurant in Bridgeport! Excellent food every time we visit!
(5)Justin R.
In West Virginia, most parts of it anyway, you are very limited in dining options. There are chain restaurants, chain restaurants, and more chain restaurants. This is of course mixed with All-You-Can-Eat Chinese buffets, but I don't usually go for that. Fortunately, in recent years, a few people have decided that different foods may be wanted in this part of the US. And Provence Market seems to be doing a fine job of offering that something different. Very delicious takes on classic French bistro foods are offered for a reasonable price. Everything I had was fresh and tasty. This place is highly recommended.
(4)Ariel B.
Provence is less than two miles from where my parents still reside in Bridgeport, WV. Provence is a MUST for me whenever I go home for a visit. Their olive tempenade spread on fresh baked, soft, still warm french bread is brought out to your table often by the smiling blond proprietor of Provence. ALL of their soups are made fresh daily and often include hearty amounts of cream and wine. Lunch is very reasonably priced while dinner is somewhat pricey. For lunch, their signature sandwiches are often served with roasted red peppers and homemade thinly sliced potato chips that go great with or on the sandwiches!
(5)Daniel D.
It is a very good date place. Their lunches are great and dinners are something different that you do not see in this area.
(4)JO W.
I am writing this review after exhausting almost every dining option there is around the Clarksburg / Bridgeport area. I love this place. The servers were attentive and I absolutely loved the food. The food we ordered, a salad and sandwich for lunch, were tasty and fresh. The prices are a little high for the area but the combination of good food and ambiance make up for it. If you are visiting or want to try something good that isn't Italian, check this place out.
(5)Fred S.
I don't know what Henry M. is talking about. This is quite possibly the best restaurant in West Virginia. The food is consistently good and the atmosphere is pleasant and relaxed and Anne Hart is a gracious hostess.
(5)Tyler P.
Who would have thunk you could drop French/European influence in a predominantly Italian-influenced part of West Virginia and come up with such a recipe for success? Just ate here tonight--my first meal in West Virginia--and boy was it good. I had the special of braised rabbit on tagliatelle, and the flavor was outstanding. They have a great wine selection, and the owner made a charming hostess. Would highly recommend to people who enjoy high quality but unfussy French cuisine.

Excellent. No doubt.

Great menu selection and noticeably fresh ingredients. Simple but good wine selection.

Why didn't my local friends tell me about this gem? Maybe good that it's a secret, as its so small. Wonderful scallops, great wine list, excellent shrimp and grapefruit luncheon salad.

Very good food and Ann is very friendly. A diamond in the rough! Blue cheese soup is a killer...

A nice dining option in the area... And, the BEST scallops I've ever had. This husband/wife team always does a wonderful job w the sea food.

This place has not only a top-notch restaurant but a wine and cheese market, complete with delicious West Virginia Fruit & Berry Company products, among others, to boost. It has monthly wine tastings and has recently won awards from Wine Spectator and the regional Cast Iron Cookoff. I think the attire depends on what you're there for -- I'd wear something more casual for lunch than I would for dinner or a wine tasting. Whether you're a local or just passing through the Bridgeport/Clarksburg area, the casual atmosphere and great value ($7 sandwiches and entrees for under $10 at lunch) is well worth a detour!
