Positives: The rooms were clean, quiet, and spacious. The complimentary breakfast was one of the best I've had. Very good price with coupon from the WV welcome center. Negatives: The staff was not rude but not very welcoming. I originally went in to ask a question of the man at the front desk and his curt answer made me feel unwelcome, like he didn't have time for me. This hotel seems to cater more toward the retiree crowd, so I'm not sure if this had anything to do with the attitude. The pool was too cold. Our toddler son loves to be in the water but cried and shivered when he tried this pool. Overall we were very pleased with our stay. We would definitely return, especially with the same coupon.

Nice hotel, beds are uncomfortable

The pros: This place has a great looking lobby and the pool is nice. The room we had had a great layout with two queens and a pull out sofa in a separate living area. The cons: it took a long time to get the hot water running in the shower and even then, I had it on full hot and it really was not that hot. Bathroom wallpaper has mold spots on it. Hair on floor behind bathroom door. Kid running in room above sounded like an elephant. I was honestly expecting a little more having just stayed at a Hilton Homewood Suites for several days at the same price though I will say that the bed is a little more comfortable here. Ask for a top level room and you'll be ok...

One night stop with kids. The room was large and clean and had everything we needed. Breakfast was fine and everyone was able to find something to eat. Pool area was nice and clean.

This was a lovely place . The staff was very friendly . There are fruit bowls by the check in counter with apples and bananas all day and in the morning they also have cookies ; I thought that was a nice gesture . The entrance has a beautiful lobby with a huge fireplace and sofas . They have an indoor as well outdoor pool and Jacuzzi . The room was very nice and clean and the pillows were not lumpy . It does have a hair dryer in the bathroom The breakfast looked awesome with lots of choices : home fries, eggs etc. My husband wanted to go to the nearby (walking distance) Cracker Barrel for the biscuits and gravy otherwise we would have eaten there. We would definitely stay there again.

The room was clean and did the trick. The kids had fun at the pool. I am giving this two stars as we asked for roll away beds but did not get them. When we checked in, they weren't in the rooms. We told the front desk (who indicated they would take care of it) and went out for the evening. When we got back that night we found the rooms still without roll aways. We again asked the front desk and at this point were told they did not have any.

As we all know picking a hotel last second passing through can be a crap shoot. Coming into Charleston WV at 10:30 at night I was ready to stop and didn't feel like doing research. I selected this place because the appearance was a lot nicer than the few around. Walked in and it was nice and clean. Rooms are fresh and clean as well, the only thing keeping this from being 5 is they allow pets. I'm not a fan of hotels that allow pets also the beds not very comfortable. I would stay again. Breakfast is pretty good as well.

The staff was friendly enough and the breakfast was good. The room itself looks nice, but my god the beds are so uncomfortable. My biggest complaint is about the staff. Despite being friendly, we were situated right in the middle of a large group of youth out on a ski trip, and they were up, running down the halls, yelling, trying to get in to rooms that weren't their own (otherwise known as my room.) I called the desk, and they said they would be right up, but nothing ever happened. Why in the world they would have rooms open in the middle of all that chaos is beyond me. The next morning, at 7 am they were up running and screaming again, I called the desk and again they said they would send someone up, and nobody ever came.

We picked this hotel because it was pet-friendly for our moving-to-a-new-state road trip. Check in was pretty painless, except our door keys didn't work in the external side door (closest entry to our room) so we had to drop everything at the door while I went back to the front desk to get rekeyed. Oh, she says, sometimes you have to try a few times. I told her I tried a handful of times and nothing--so she rekeyed it. I went back and nope, still didn't work. I think I tried about 10-12 times before the little light turned green and granted me access. Ridiculous. If you know it's a problem, warn guests--or better yet, GET IT FIXED. So, it wasn't a great start to our visit. But the room was nice and big--and COLD. We turned down the temp on the unit but it was still freezing hours later. I happened to get out the Welcome book to see what time the pool opened in the morning--and noticed that you set the room temp via the thermostat on the wall. REALLY? That is a bit unusual, so you think there might have been a note or something ON THE A/C UNIT ITSELF saying to use the thermostat. The pool was nice and it was neat that it connected to the outdoor pool (though we didn't use that part). The hot tub was a nice size, but the jets weren't working so it wasn't as nice as it could have been. There were no towels on the rack so I told the front desk, and by the time we wanted to leave a half hour later, there were STILL no towels. Lovely. So I had to run back to our room to grab towels for our group so we didn't have four people dripping water through the hotel. The included breakfast was extensive and pretty good--scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, bacon, self-made waffles, yogurt, bagels, fruit, cereal, milk, juice, etc. It certainly wasn't a perfect stay, but it was decent and we'd probably stay there again.

This place has gone downhill. It's only been a year and it looks sooo run down. Very disappointed. The staff as usual is great though.

This was perfect for our purposes. The room was very large, it was pet friendly, the a/c was easily controlled via the panel on the wall and it got nice and chilly, which I like. The room and bathroom were clean and comfortable. Checkout was at 12!! We got to sleep in which was awesome. Out room was near the road so I did hear traffic but it didn't keep me from sleeping or enjoying myself. We didn't get up in time for the free breakfast, it ended at 10am. By the time we reached the coffee at 11:45am it was kind of cold. Overall it was a great hotel.

This hotel was a great overnight stay. Check-in was quick & thorough. The staff was extremely accommodating & kind. Hotel isn't brand new but extremely well kept. Rooms and bathrooms were very clean. There were a few bus loads of kids staying, too & they cleaned out the free breakfast. 2 employees worked diligently to replenish which was great. Also loved the front porch sitting!

Excellent place, great amenities, very clean room, and very friendly staff. Been there several times now, and we will be back. We stayed there for Bridge Day 2013, and this year it turned out to be one of the cheaper places to stay. The rooms are very large, spacy, and the suites have separate seating from the bed room. They have a constant coffee supply in the lobby plus fresh fruit that is daily replaced. Breakfast is awesome, lots of juices, and a nice selection of breakfast items. Best is the staff - they are friendly, do whatever they can to make your stay a success. We have tried other places to stay in the area, and this one is clearly our choice.

Nice place, nice rooms. They answered the phone when called to double check reservation, but did not Email confirmation before we Left After Reserving Room. Coffee and hair dryers in room. Heating lamps in bathrooms. Good deal and comfortable. I would stay here again.

This Country Inn is conviently located to Interstate 77. When I arrived there was some confusion as to what type of room I reserved. The suite was not the type that I wanted. I called the front desk and immediately someone from the desk met me at the room and took me to another of the type I wanted. The room I wanted was more $$ per night however they did not charge me. Unfortunately, the suite had a heavy smoke or pet aroma to it. I understand that they are pet friendly but when they charge you $30 a night for an 11 pound dog I would think they could do better on the odor. I think a deposit would be more in line with some of the deposit returned upon checkout depending on the condition of the room. The free breakfast was excellent...good food and many choices all well done. I would have rated it higher had it not smelled like a kennel. The motel and room was clean but I would rather not smell the dog that last spent the night.

I was on a road trip driving east to Virginia and I figured we'd be able to stop around Charleston for the night. Unfortunately, that turned out to be a mistake on my part as every hotel in Charleston seemed to be completely booked. So with the thought that maybe I'd just have to drive the whole night to Virginia, I actually came upon this place in Beckley. The attendant was immediately helpful and gave me much better deals than what I was asking for. I think he gave me a Seniors discount (That's a good 30 years off yet) and a cheaper hotel rate. And the room was excellent. Clean. Smelled nice. Comfortable beds. A complete suite, actually. It even had a great pool and breakfast for us. Really like a diamond in the rough. Quite an amazing amount of fortune to have found this place. I'd definitely stay in this hotel again if I had the chance.

We left Lexington, KY late and drove East, stopping to seek a hotel....everywhere was booked up, so we resigned ourselves to driving straight thru to NC. When we stopped in Beckley for dinner, we tried this hotel and, boy, what a pleasant surprise. Clean, efficient, great pool, veranda with rockers out front, large suite with comfortable sofas & bed. We even had a nice breakfast. This was definitely above the norm for hotels on the road. We'll add it to our "stay" list, as we travel across the country.

Great warm indoor pool. Nice, large clean suite with fridge and microwave. Friendly staff. All good.

I read somewhere once that travelers used to prefer taking routes around West Virginia, rather than through it--an accident of unfortunate topography, perhaps. Many considered West Virginia's terrain to be too rugged and too impossibly difficult to traverse to justify taking a direct route through the state. So when people traveled westward, they'd almost always veer north toward Pennsylvania and Ohio or south toward Virginia and North Carolina in order to avoid potential accidents. But obviously not everyone did. Because some people elected to travel through there. Of those travelers, some liked the place enough to want to stay there. And others who traveled there saw the place, not as some insurmountable obstacle, but as an entire landscape filled with opportunity over which it seemed worthwhile to toil. These people can be credited with building West Virginia's impressive and notoriously windy highway system, establishing townships and starting the controversial coal mining industry (for better or worse). So during a time when all of my friends seemed to be planning vacations to places like Paris, Zanzibar, Norway and Bali, I was daydreaming about West Virginia and thinking a lot about what I had read. For one thing, I discovered that doing a google image search for Zanzibar--a tiny island, 20 miles off the coast of Tanzania--is an incredibly easy task. Do a search for "Zanzibar" and you instantly have thousands of stunningly vibrant images depicting all aspects of life on the island. It's like virtually traveling there without ever leaving your desk. In comparison, West Virginia remained shrouded in mystery. Google image searches for towns like Johhnycake, Stumptown and Mount Hope produced almost nothing. In fact, wherever I looked, I could never seem to find enough information (whether written or visual) to satisfy my curiosity about the place. And why was it so easy to find information about exotic islands halfway around the world, but not West Virginia, in our own backyard? So I decided to just travel there. This Country Inn and Suites in Beckley is the first hotel I stayed at in West Virginia. On a cold, rainy night it was remarkably comforting to walk into this hotel's cozy lobby to find a fire going in the fire place and about half a dozen turtleneck-clad guests hanging out in the lobby with mugs of tea and cider in hand. I prefer modernism, but I surely appreciated the country motif of this hotel that night. Check in was a breeze--the staff is genuinely friendly, attentive and caring. Our room was much larger than I expected, complete with a separate reading area with a dark wood table and a couple of high backed plush chairs. We immediately threw our things down, changed and hit the gym. It was nothing more than a couple of treadmills in a tiny room on the first floor, but all of the equipment worked for the 4 or 5 miles I needed it to and appeared clean. Afterward, we hung out on the rocking chairs in the front of the hotel and stared excitedly into the West Virginian night sky. Before heading to bed, I grabbed dozens of travel brochures off the kiosk in the main lobby, took them up to our room and spread them out across the burgundy bedspread--ATV tours, caving, coal mining museums, maps of quiet country roads. I couldn't wait to wake up the next morning.
