The seasoning might not have Crack in it, but I'll be surprised if it's totally legal. The flavor is unreal for a sub. The bread is amazing. But wait! If you are slow carb or low-carb hunting, this is the place! Have any sub on lettuce instead. Yup, ANY sub can be delivered through the magical-mystery-sub-chute for $4.50 I think it was? As a slow-carb fan so I am so there. Can we get one on the south side please? Or do I have to open one myself? I'll work on that. Update: I had my sandwich as a salad. That slowed delivery a bit, but I was thrilled with the results. My carb-diet is to avoid carbs at breakfast when possible. My wife has lost about 20 lbs and me about 15. Oh, and avoid carbs after dinner as well.

My dad dragged me here after picking me up from the airport and I will admit I scoffed and gave a dramatic eye roll at the thought of going to a sub place that he enjoyed in the 70s. Turned out pretty damn tasty. I had The White House which is enormous with ham and turkey. They refused to give us the sauce on the side which I'm not sure why but am assuming it is a secret recipe. Whatever, that sauce is amazing. I would bathe in it if I had the option. It's thick, salty and delicious. And I just realized how incredibly dirty that sounded. Please don't flag my review. In all seriousness a great sub for less than five bucks, as yelp says I'm a fan.

When they handed me my sandwich, I was warned not to eat it outside of the plastic bag it was served in. I knew it was going to be good. I ordered the roast beef (Cattle Baron $5.59) with no onions. I just got off a plane from SF and had not eaten anything all day so I was really hungry. The sub was only 6 inches, but it was a fililng, greasy, delicious mess. The meat was falling out the back with each bite that i took. and I managed to NOT get any food on my lap! Success! They were out of the soup of the day so I was disappointed by that. 1 sandwich, 1 bag of chips, a diet coke and a brownie for under $10 ($9.30). That's a good deal. I was stuffed and couldn't finish the brownie. I'm hoping to come back later this week if i get a chance! note to the newbies, take the advice. DONT EAT THE SUB OUT OF THE BAG. or you will need new pants. =)

My older friend I'm with said it Tastes the same as in 1970s. Get it light on the spice and oil. Bread is the same too.

I travel to Milwaukee regularly, this was my first visit to this sub shop, glad I went. It's a bit different than other sub shops in that they make the sandwiches behind closed doors. No big deal but its not like Firehouse or Subway where you can watch them make it. Ordering was fast and easy, I had their Italian sub. It was very good, loved the dressing they put on it. But what I like most about it, the bread. It is a heavy, heartier bread than you get at other sub places - I really enjoyed it. I also think they give you way more meat, cheese and toppings than other places I will definitely be back next time I am in town.

I use to know someone that worked here ever since the owner got out of prison and restarted his business. The spices are from a company whose job is specifically to make mixes and sell them in large quantities. They are not mixed on-site. My preferred sub sandwich local but be wary of how long this establishment will be around do to questionable practices. I would always still go here. Miles Standish for the win.

I am just digging on the Miles Standish right now. If you ask any Milwaukee baby-boomer about this place, their eyes light up with nostalgia as they talk about how big of a thing Suburpia was back in the 70's. It has a long and interesting history. My parents are crazy about this place. When you walk into the flagship Suburpia, you might think you walked back into the 1970's. Wood paneling as far as the eye can see. It's weird, it's ugly, it's absolutely fantastic. You'll order your sub and the cashier will likely head into the back room for awhile. You can't see anything that's going on back there. It's all very mysterious. What's happening? Why can't I see any of the ingredients being added? The cashier will then emerge and open the sandwich slot and then hand it over to you. Did your cashier make the sandwich?!? Is this one person running the whole operation?!? Are there elves in the back!?! Beautiful oily sandwich elves!?!?!? Nobody knows, and it's fun that way. The reason you eat Suburpia is for the oil and spices they put on their subs. You need to leave it in the bag while you eat it. Newbs can see directions right on the wall. *BOSS TIP* If you want to take your game up a notch, give your sandwich a 180 degree rotation when you hit the halfway mark. It really takes the flavor up a notch and helps coat the sandwich with that oily spicy goodness. My dad taught me that trick. He's a real champion. *ANOTHER TIP* In the event that you accidentally spill the delicious oil reservoir out of your sandwich bag and onto your clothing, please know that you are not the only person to have pondered sucking and/or eating your own clothing during the consumption of a Suburpia sub. Once you've attained privacy, realize that nobody will ever know what happened and that this is just between you and your pants. And then... just let it happen.

Simply the best subs ever. I wish they had a location closer and I would be eating these more. I used to go here regularly as a child till they all shut down. When I heard they reopened many years later I took the whole family their for subs. The bread tastes exactly like it did back in the 80's when I last went there.

One of a kind sub shop. The bread is perfect and the dressing they put on all the subs makes them to die for

I started going to Suburpia in the 70s. They had a small place across the street from the Tosa Theater on North Ave. I loved the White House sub and truly it's just as good now as it was back in the 70s. Nothing really has changed other than the location. They have the nicest people taking your order (always have). Your sub gets made in the back room dropped into a bin behind the counter and presented to you for your enjoyment.

You had me at Suburpia. Literally. We were driving at 50 mph down Bluemound after a day at the Zoo and I spot a red "Suburpia" sign above a storefront in a strip mall. What in the world is Suburpia?!? If only there were some app that could help me figure this out-oh-wait.. yeah. Yelp. Yelp quickly clarifies that this place is the perfect combination of "Sub" "Burp" and "Suburbia" and I'm sold. I read up on all of the tips and tricks: red chili flakes, rolling up the bag, the onions (which I may have skipped otherwise) By the time we made our date with Suburpia a few days later, I was ready. We decided to get takeout so that we could share the goodness with the whole family at home. I'm glad we did, because there is not much in the way of "dine in" seating. When you step through the door, be prepared. It is no ordinary door, but a time-portal that will take you straight back to 1973. The wood paneling in the front room is straight out of your childhood home, last seen in your dad's den or the basement rec room. The walls are adorned with some photos and instructional signage (the poster explaining the proper method of eating a Suburpia sub is particularly helpful) You order at the counter and service is gruffly nice. The options are a bit limited and at first glance, I had a hard time deciding what I'd like. "American Cheese" is not usually my cheese of choice, since it is usually more cheese-product than actual cheese, but at Suburpia, you don't have other options. American Cheese or no cheese... that's it. However, I should've known better, we are in WISCONSIN, for goodness' sakes! I got my American Cheese and I liked it. I ordered the Miles Standish, sans mayo. I added the red chili flakes and went for medium. My family members got variations on the same thing. We ordered some dill potato chips which my son randomly adored. Our food was incredibly delicious. The bread was just the right texture and flavor, there was just enough meat, the cheese was actually good, and the combo of the oil, chili flakes, and onions was as tantalizingly tasty as I'd been led to believe. Tons of flavor, a little spicy, ohsogood. If you are nearby, please go and eat one now, for me. Here it is, weeks later, and I'm still thinking about how fantastic it was. If I had one around the corner (or within 30 minutes' drive), I would be there at least once a week. The sandwiches aren't huge but they were just the right amount, and the price was reasonable. There was a bit of a kerfuffle with mayonnaise, a drive to/from home to get it corrected, etc but they made it right and I was happy in the end. My perfect summer evening would include a picnic from Suburpia in some lush, green park followed by a cold, melty icecream cone or cup of custard from one of the many options nearby. Regrettably, I'm much too far away to make that a reality, so be sure to check it out and enjoy it in my stead :)

What is this magical seasoning they put on the Miles Standish?! I'm a foodie but can't quite put my finger on it. I suspect it may be crack, because that's how addicting these subs are. The bread is delicious. Great quality meat, cheese.. the onions/lettuce/tomatoes diced up and seasoned just right..! And then you consider that this sandwich is less than $4.50? Sold. Sure, with the mayo and oil, it has to be an "every once in a while" indulgence-- but hands down this is way better than any Subway, Cousins, or Jimmy John's sub. It's not for everyone; it's also almost something entirely different.. but deliciously so.

My first visit to a Suburpia left me wanting more...sandwiches! The inside decor (wood paneling, counter top) reminds me of a long-lost relative's place. The clerk/cashier was polite & friendly and waited patiently while I surveyed the sandwich options. I settled on a Miles Standish (B+) -- turkey, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion -- and was impressed. There was something different about this as compared to say, Subway, Cousins, etc. Perhaps it was the high salt content, for this reviewer who is generally "low-salt/no-salt", it was a welcome dash of HELLO! I was a bit bemused by the plastic bag the sub arrived in; I ended up removing the sandwich and dealing with the mess rather than smell the odd plastic bag while noshing on this simple late-night dinner selection. The ability to add Kosher Dill Krunchers chips (A) was an added plus to my increased sodium intake for the evening! For less than $6.50 my hunger and taste buds were sated. Suburpia advertises that their subs are habit forming. While my sandwich was tasty and filling, I'd probably have to try a different selection and hope for less salt on my next visit. Chances are I will return as this location is right around the corner from the bowling alley. Nice work, good sandwich!

Best sandwich in Milwaukee! My dad would take me here as a child and I love it now just as much as i did then! I recommend the Miles Standish. And don't forget, EAT IT IN THE BAG! :)

As I write this, there is a giant pile of Suburpia sandwiches stacked up at my parent's house, awaiting family arrival. I have not tasted these sandwiches since 1978, when I used to eat them in high schoool. "My" Suburpia was on the corner of Euclid and 27th Street, right next to Leon's Custard, and no longer exists (it's a Subway). These sandwiches were procured by my aunt who lives in Brookfield, so, the Bluemound location. Mmmmm..... It's 2:05 PM CST. Will report back . . . 3:17 PM CST. Yum. Corned beef submarine sandwich, the taste I remember. Delicious! And now, according to my aunt, all organic!

I understand fully how this historic establishment made a successful comeback and why my parents loved it so during its hay day. My parents always shared their stories of Suburpia and how they would buy one and head down to the lakefront. They considered the sandwiches a picnic without all the mess. Why? Well, you definitely do not need utensils or a plate. Savor that sammy in its original bag. Never. I repeat. Never remove it from that bag. You will be discarding the safety net for all that makes a Suburpia submarine sandwich so special: the oil, the onions, the seasoning. Those are the ingredients that make history. Do not forget that fabulous seeded bun either. The sesame seeds add to the flavor dynamic and form complete bliss in a bag. As a kid, I was educated on the importance of the bag, but never on something that was bestowed on me during this last visit. As my husband and I ordered our subs, the man next to us advised me that I should add hot peppers. Hot peppers = red pepper flakes. You may tell them "light" or "heavy." I love heat, so I told them heavy. The sandwich experts at Suburpia do not disappoint. Now, at the bottom of my bag, I found the added ectasy of pepper flakes in my oil, onions, and seasoning. I enjoyed scooping out the sandwich remnants even more than before. All future visits will include the ordering of the peppers. Let me pass along this wisdom and advise you to indulge, if you have not done so already.

This has been on my radar for a while so while sitting in the construction mess at one pm I said lunch time and I'm looking right at it so its fate. It's small and 70s on the inside. The place was standing room only so take out was in. I had the Classico which came in a bag with a twist tie. Looking at the bread I knew it was going to be good because it was that slightly chewy bread with sesame seeds filled with meat and sub toppings. There was a oily seasoned sauce on the sandwhich which was good. This was very different from most subs and delicious. This is a neat place and the sub was a decent size for $4.51. I can't wait to try other subs.

I love the corned beef subs. Just great. The seafood sub is good too. Hot peppers on both. And try the Mushroom brie soup. I am pretty sure its a packaged soup but good just the same.

Sorry. Can't do it. I've tried this place twice with two different orders and couldn't finish either sandwich. It's not that the staff is rude--they were pleasant on both occasions. It's not that the ingredients aren't fresh--they certainly seem fresh. It's not that the meal is too greasy for me--hell, I like Real Chili. There's just something about the sandwich as a whole that is entirely unappetizing. The sub actually smells (and tastes, I guess) like the plastic bag they wrap it in. The oil/sauce has an odd taste that seems to attract some people, but definitely not me. And I don't buy the whole "kitsch" argument; Milwaukee has a laundry list of unassuming places with more character and better food. Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm completely unimpressed and would say that Suburpia is overrated at best.

Love, love, LOVE Suburpia! I wish this location were a bit faster and that the lunch clerk (female, dark hair, painfully shy to being unfriendly) weren't alway the same woman. Such a great place needs a friendlier face!

After seeing raves from Milwaukee natives about Suburpia I finally decided it was time to give it a try. Two of us had the Natural Wonder (vegetarian) and the other member of our family tried the Miles Standish (turkey). We all felt that Suburpia's subs are exceptional. That oil and seasoning they put on the subs is delicious! I also love the bread the subs come on...far, far superior to what you'd get in a typical chain sub restaurant. With all that oil it does seem a bit decadent, but if you feel like having a little splurge I think you'll enjoy these subs. They do have seating in the store, but the ambience is nothing fancy, so most likely you'll want to take your order to go and eat somewhere else. They seem to be focused on providing a simple but quality product.

Downtown location - Well first off I have been in here 3 times between 11:30-12:30 and it is always completely empty?? Most sandwhich shops at this time are really busy? And it is oddly quiet, some backround music would be nice? The subs do taste unique, but this is the 5th sub shop within a mile also. My biggest complaint is they do not allow customizing, which I find odd for a sandwhich shop. Seems like most people what to cutomize their sandwhiches nowadays. For example, they have sprouts on 3 different subs, so I asked for sprouts to be added to the one that I wanted. The girl replied "Well my boss wont let me because of how it is pre-packaged" ??? So not exactly sure what that meant. And the last sub I got was salty and pretty oily. Honestly, I dont think this location will make it the year. I would rather go to Pot Bellys, Subway, Capriotti's, or Cousins, at least I can order it the way I want it.

The Reuben James, which is corned beef is perhaps the best sub ever Miles Standish, good as well.

Subupia subs aren't for everyone. I've come to learn you either love them or hate them - there is no in-between. When I was a kid, I absolutely hated them. Now as an (sorta) adult, I love them. The turkey and the corned beef are my favorites. Each sub comes in a plastic bag, and if you're smart, you'll leave the sandwich in the bag while you eat. It's extremely messy. It's extremely causal and my Dad said that it was a big hippie hang out when he was growing up in the sixties. It's definitely not a "health conscious" place, but it isn't too bad for you. Decent bread, good meats and cheeses, but they do however use real mayo (usually a deal breaker for me) that fits the sandwich perfectly. The corned beef has a nutmeg taste to it, but it's very good. My only complaint would be for people with any allergies - the will not disclose the ingredients which kind of sucks. My father has a tree nut allergy and with the thought of nutmeg in the sandwich, he will not eat there anymore. It's pretty quiet and they have high tables to sit at, but we always take it home or go to Greenfield Park to eat at the pond.

Supurpia Lover. Used to go to the one on Capital Drive near Kitt's custard back in the 70's. This was a big "Marshall HS" hang out along with Barnaby's. Then it was gone and along came Cousin's and Subway. When Suburpia first came back and tried the sandwiches they just weren't the same as I remember, the bread was not the same neither was the meat. Never went back until this week. My husband and I decided to try it again. OMG!!!! Tasted just like the old days. Please don't change a thing, will be coming back for more.

I ate Suburpia for lunch back in high school, their subs are still great! I would highly recommend this place, their oil and spices are different than any other sub place! Also love the taste of the bread!

I've been to Suburpia many times and I absolutely loved it, but last Fri. my husband and I went there and purchased 2 subs, both were the Goldcoast subs. They didn't taste quite right but we ate them anyway (not smart on my part). About 6 hours later we both became very nauseated and we were up most of the night with vomitting and diareha. There is no doubt it was from the subs we ate. We hadn't had anything else to eat since lunch which was a salad. All I could taste is the ham in the sandwich and even now I quiver at the thought of eating a sub there. They definitely have lost a loyal customer and I wanted to warn others so they don't have to experience what we went through.

Coming back to town in a few weeks to visit family. On the top of my to do list is Suburpia. I am living in CA for the past 5 years and haven't found a sub shop remotely comparable. Can't wait to sink my teeth in.

  • Tom W.

I just don't get it. I've had 2 different subs, from 2 different locations in 2 different years and was equally disappointed both times. I guess I don't understand the appeal. Sub par meats, american cheese, overly salty dressing on a sandwich in a bag. The only reason this gets 2 stars instead of 1 is because I enjoyed the bread. Maybe their subs tasted radically different in the 70's, but then again I wasn't alive at that time.

I hadn't been to a Suburpia since the late 1970's when the one across the street form McCormick Hall at Marquette closed. At the time, I had shifted to Cousins and didn't miss Suburpia. I now live in California, and a recent Facebook conversation on my High School Alumni page was about Suburpia, nd how there are now locations again. I could still remember all the sandwich names (Gold Coast, Miles Standish, etc.). So lats week I was in Milwaukee and Yelped Suburpia and ended up at this location. The Classic Italian was excellent! The roll was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly chewy. The sub ingredients were tasty, and the onions/oil/spice combination was as good as I remember. The guy working at the counter was super-friendly and nice. All in all, a great experience and I'll be back on my next visit. Welcome back Suburpia!

I was thrilled when I heard the original Suburpia was coming back. I went there shortly after it opened back up becasue for the first week, the line was just frustratingly long. Really, it was only frustrating because I didn't want to wait an hour for my sandwich. It's just like I remember it. I have to agree when people say to eat it in the bag. It's messy.

For those of us who grew up in Milwauke in the 70's and 80's the recent resurgance of Suburpia is a great coup. When my eyes lit upon the familiar sign of yore in it's Wauwatosa location, I was immediately pulled into it's tractor beam. Completely unpretentious, no decor to speak of what so ever, but the taste of these awesome subs more than makes up for it. The bread is a hearty sesame seed Italian. Crusty on the outside, chewy on the inside. The toppings are ample and the result is a two hander of a sub with tangy dressing. Unlike typical sub shops that wrap their sandwiches in paper and then put them in a plastic bag, Suburpia serves these bad boys straight into the plastic sleeve. Cutting out the annoying middle man of a step so you can delight in it's taste immediately. I highly recommend eating the sandwich in the bag to catch the inevitable sub avalanche out the back end.

Suburpia is a Milwaukee Icon. Choose one of the many sandwiches to fit your personality: the sub options are unique, as each option has a creative name. One day I chose the "'Reuben James" as a cop in line behind me ordered the "white house" (for one moment in time there was order in the universe). After ordering your sandwich, a few moments of contemplation about your place in the universe will be followed by the mysterious appearance of your sandwich in a plastic bag. Behind the mysterious wood paneled wall is where the magic happens... each sandwich is relished with Milwaukee's own "suburpia secret sauce" which is a tasty, addictive combination of onion bits, olive oil, and a spice combination only known by the Gurus behind the wood paneling. *Remember to keep the bottom of the Sub within the bag it comes with, as each Sub has more 'secret sauce' than you should actually ingest and you do not want it in your lap.*

Suburpia and I go way back. Back to my pregnant days. There was a temp-location on the corner of Port Washington & Mequon Rd (in Mequon) that was near my place of work. 11 o'clock would strike and I would head on over to Suburpia with my big ole pregnant belly. For me - the Miles Standish or Gold Coast did the trick. And now, here I am post-baby, craving these delectable sandwiches again. Jimmy John's is disgusting in comparison. Subway... not even an option. And Cousin's... well, as much as I love a Cousin's sandwich now & again doesn't even come close. See you soon, Suburpia! XO

Just get the ORIGINAL taste and seasonings and I and may more people will be happy. Listen to your customers and don't make up trash in a defensive manner to side track the real problem. Just admit it the subs taste nothing like the ones that I have been eating over the years. WHY? Gold Coast does not use msg?? So why do they have the CORRECT flavors?

    (1)
  • Emily M.

Yes, I am a fan of Suburpia. Now that I've enjoyed the MIles Standish a few times, I think they might be my new 'go-to' place for subs. Every time I've gone in to pick up some subs, the service has been very fast and friendly, and the subs really hit the spot. Yes, they tend to be a little heavy on the oil, but that's what makes these subs so awesome. I don't know what they put in that oil but there is nothing like it that I've had in the Milwaukee area. The bread is also very good - fresh, kind of squishy, full of sesame seed goodness. Yes, we will be back, and soon!

  • Michelle S.

This has NOTHING to do with the failure of your staffers or the firing of your GM. Decided to give it a try again today, and again absolutely NO FLAVOR other than plain unseasoned vegetable oil. Will not be back and would NOT recommend to others unless you prefer your sandwiches of a high quality ingredient (I will give you that) with little to NO flavor, basically a vegetable oily mess.

  • Nick B.

Nothing special. Mediocre sub, mediocre service lady, lack of seating. I've been to multiple sub restaurants, but nothing made Suburpia stick out above the rest.
