Always nearly empty but you must have at least two drinks at the bar before they will seat you! Food is ok but owner can be rude if you don't want to wait or drink at the bar. Plan on at least 3 hours and don't come hungry! There are better steakhouses near by.

Hands down the most interesting restaurant in Wausau, and one of my favorite in the United States. Incredible wine list, great food, unique, one-of-a-kind atmosphere and good company. Gary makes a great drink and can get you into a great bottle of wine at a reasonable price. You can never go wrong with the surf and turf with a side of the famous wild rice soup. This is my go-to restaurant whenever I am in town and is perfect for quiet night out or a business dinner.

Laid-back atmosphere, excellent food. The owners are welcoming and genuine. Loads of stories, just grab a drink and listen! They sure don't make 'em like this anymore. A real gem!

Don't GO! Walked in around 5:45 pm on a Weds night and waited at hostess stand for several minutes. Thank goodness as I looked into dining area which was cute with the red/white checkered tablecloths; however, there was a very poorly lite bar sea to the left and the whole place had an unpleasant order. I just couldn't stand the lack of anyone greeting or acknowledging a patrons presence, do I left In search of a place that'd earn my money, Signed, very disappointed out of town business traveler after reading all the reviews!

Jen L.'s review is on target. This place is a blast from the past! This is a second generation business that has been around for 70+ years according to the current owner (who is 76 himself). The decor is a northwoods lodge, with conversation areas (couches) in the bar. It also has a number of fish mounts and wildlife memorabilia. They have a climate controlled wine cellar with MANY choices of wine, sold by the bottle only. The owner/bartender was friendly and we enjoyed some good conversation with him. He is very knowledgeable about the local area and who's who, and we found him entertaining. We purchased a bottle of Cline reserve Zinfandel, 1996. We were a little concerned it was too old for a zin, but he assured us that if it wasn't right, he'd let us choose something else. The wine was great! He also served us some cheese spread in a little cup with some saltines. :0) Cute! We had already eaten dinner, and thus did not eat here. I did hear a patron ranting about how good his steak was however. This is worth the stop- it's like taking a step back in time when you go into this place.

Gary makes a great cocktail, his wine selection far exceeds what you'd expect in central WI (I've never actually seen the list, but we always end up with a nice bottle from California), and the steak and scallops are top notch.

The bartender and original co-owner of this approx. 50 yr old establishment was friendly, conversational (provided a 2min. family history complete with first settler/ family photos) and quite skilled. He poured the best Manhattan I have tasted in quite some time. It made the day's suffering/whimpering on top of Granite Peak and my home alarm company notifying me on a forced entry, all melt away. Check Plus: Atmosphere is very northern WI lodge, which is what you want when it's 10 below and the bartender didn't make us feel like outsiders or those "slick cityfolk." Check Minus: He quickly stopped being so congenial after we told him we were NOT staying for dinner despite even ordering a shrimp cocktail with our Manhattans. Sorry! We were already meeting friends at the Italian eatery down the street.
