"The Dane" has been a favorite since originally being a Madison frequenter. The new location in Central Wisconsin is just at a different in atmosphere, but a great local place to stop in. Food is food, and they have a variety of craft beers to try. The bartenders are quite knowledgable on the origin and art of brewing. Pros: -Great food. Unique selection, including appetizers. -Great bar. They have staple craft beers brewed on site, and change out a few of them per season. -Atmosphere is dark and laid-back. Big wooden booths are casual and cozy. Cons: -Extremely crowded at times. Pick your timing wisely. -Whilst having drinks at the bar, on one occasion, I was subjected to listening to a bartender giving her political views on abortion. (She was notably pro-life.) It was a tad awkward. I enjoy a good, heated debate, but not on the work clock.

Very disappointing. My son liked his dish the best because he was congested and couldn't taste it! The steak was very poor quality, the Thai dish that was described as mild was VERY spicy. Bland mushy mac and cheese and brown stemmed broccoli served with appetizer artichoke dip.
(1)Amanda S.
Sat in the lower level patio area. Great place. Great atmosphere. Had the Bloody Mary, spicy of course, and it was solid. Also had Mayan chicken wrap and fiancé had the Cuban sandwich with kettle chips and we didn't leave disappointed. This is a great stop.

I have been here 4 or 5 times and it seems like I have a different experience each time I come. The last time was surely a rating of 1, and the time before that I thought it was a 5.... And I ordered the same meal both times! The difference was the time of day and were I was seated. The night I was in the dinning area was great. I found a new dish I had never tried (usually I had been ordering " bar" type food). I ordered the what I believe was called the Jagerschnitzel, it was excellent! I had found something truly good and was looking forward to coming back for more! Then one night after seeing a movie, I stopped in and ate in the bar room because other areas had closed for the night. When I sat down there where 2 couples at the bar and one person sitting at a table. We decided to sit at a table also. What we didn't expect was that the bartender was the only one working this whole room and that everyone had ordered food about the same time. Now I do know that this was not her fault, but the service was terrible. Foods came out at weird times, butter for the bread was rock hard and some of the food was ice cold, while others on the plate were warm. I did feel sorry for the bartender because she was running her butt off. Management should take the hit on this one. The weird thing is that there were still waitresses around cleaning the dinning area. Why not move a few in to help? Bottom line.... Dont eat there after 8pm. Come for drinks! And try the Jagerschnitzel.. It was awesome!

First time here, stopped while traveling based on yelp reviews. Easy access from highways. We tried the Dane burger (buffalo instead of beef), the tuna appetizer, and the black & tan brownie. Not all that impressed with the food. The burger was bland, and the tuna was over cooked and had very little flavor on its own. The presentation was nice however. We did enjoy the brownie, it was HUGE and the ice cream was unique and delicious. We tried the Crop Circle Wheat and the Speedway IPA, both were excellent. The decor is perfect for brewery dining, beautiful dark wood and nice big booths.

Been here several times. Tonight was the worst. Not busy, slow. Took 45 minutes for 2 simple meals because they somehow messed up one of our orders, even though nothing was changed. Waitress brought water when I had 2 beers, like I was cutoff. Bad service, good food.
(3)Christina T.
Excellent choice for lunch or dinner you won't be disappointed. I was looking for a quick lunch but didn't want to go to just anywhere so some friends told me about this place. I was amazed by the food it was excellent and I couldn't of been happier with the choice I made. I will be going back.
(4)Jim T.
The service was great, the food was good, but the noise level in the beer gardens at lunchtime today was way too high to even have a conversation around the table. There were seven of us and we all had burgers except for one person who had pasta, and the food overall again was very good. Our total tab with no drinks or dessert was $115. I recommend but you probably want to eat inside.
(3)Keith A.
Not bad at all. Slightly above average food. The fried cheese curds are good. The Mac and cheese was okay. I don't drink, so odd place for me. Recommended by the courtyard hotel staff. The root beer is exceptional. I gave am extra star because of it. Free wifi is a plus, however, they wifi does not allow for proxies.. :(
(4)Erica G.
Stayed next door for work and you gotta love anything within walking distance. I decided on the honey pepper bacon salmon sandwich. I ended up eating it openface cause I'm not a fan of so much bread. The salmon had great flavor with the honey and cracked pepper. It matched very well with the bacon slices and mayo like spread. The pub fries have a great seasoning to them and were not overdone. Service was prompt and friendly. This place is large and seemed to be able to accommodate several large groups. As a party of 1 they didn't make me sit at the bar, which I appreciated. They allowed me to take up space at a table during rush hour dinner time. Much appreciated! I would def go again if in the area.
(4)Tobin h.
Just above average on everything with well above average service. Nothing stood out as great that would make you go out of your way to come back but the all round service from the entire staff (hard working and friendly) makes it an easy stop if you are rolling up the freeway and are going through Wausau. I had some really good green chili with a blackened chicken sandwich that was OK. We were a party of 7 and the consensus was the same... Yeah, we'd come back but maybe tighten the menu a bit and make the beer prices a bit more of a value.
(3)James K.
Absolutely delicious! I enjoyed the burger with bacon and bratwurst on it with the pretzel bun, oh baby it was good. I also had the sweet potato tots which I wouldn't get again, they were soft not crispy like I like my tots done. We all had beers and and apps and our bill was less than 40 bucks for two people. They even had a band playing that was pretty good. If you like beer this is a good place they have a large variety. Our server was good, very friendly but listed the menu items and drink items way too fast! If I make it back to Wausau again I will be eating here!
(4)Adam K.
Don't bring kids here unless you want a headache. Upon arrival staff quoted our party of 12 10-15 minutes. Once they noticed the kids that estimate went to 90 minutes. When asked why the difference we were met with a shrug.
(1)Matthew D.
We visit Wausau a few times each year. During our visit we always come to the Great Dane. The beers are tasty and seasonally relevant. The food is incredibly authentic and delicious. My fiancé always gets the southwest tortellini or the Wisconsin style Cheddar Mac. I'm a fan of their Jagerschnitzel and their meatloaf. Their burgers are also top of the line! We always get a starter as the apps offered are the best way to start this experience. We've never had a bad server and we are always thanked by the hostesses on the way out. Their consistent delivery of quality and service keeps us coming back!
(5)Michelle F.
Kudos on the updated menu!! I have to borrow someone else's arm to give a resounding THREE THUMBS UP for the milk-braised pork shoulder. Everything about the dish was great...right down to the Brussels sprouts.
(4)Paige S.
They always have great service and great food! The staff is full of suggestions as well, great place.
(5)Henri M.
A standard bearer when we're in Wausau. Their rotating tap always has something worth trying, and the food is consistent. I wish they'd vary the menu a bit, though.
(4)Laura S.
I recommend the burgers and plantains. The root beer I made with a syrup in house and each time I've had it, the concoction was overly sweet and syrupy. Service was good and friendly.
(4)Thien N.
The chicken pot pie is a must. Oh and of course their loaded potato soup is one of my favorite soups I've ever had. And their beer selection is just huge. My fiancé and I like to go here quite a bit.
(5)Brian L.
First time here. The food and beer were excellent . The service left something to be desired. When a party of eight or nine came in, our server, suspecting a bounteous tip, left us to fend for ourselves after we had already ordered another round of beers. Hope she got her big tip. I left a dollar.
(3)Natalie S.
Fast service, large menu options, good beer selection (the wheat beer is really good), good comes out quick.
(4)Anikka W.
I really enjoy the Great Dance. My favorites are the Chicken Pot Pie (homemade and served with great apple sauce) or the Lasagne. Their beers are good too. My only complaint is that once you get your food it seems to be impossible to get your server back (other than the slipping your check on the table). I often want refills of my drink (usually soda) after I start eating and I can never seem to get one. I've even had to resort to drinking some one else's water or drink because the server is no where to be found. This has happend on almost every trip to the Great Dane and is disappointing. Also there are some booths in the bar area that are "c" shaped and make it difficult to talk with the people you came to dinner with. Overall I do enjoy the great dane though.
(4)Michael M.
Typing this will take some time, the burger I had has slowed down my heart rate, therefore my movements are not the quickest. Lordy lordy! I had the Great Dane's Brat & Bacon Pretzel Burger and immediately sent out a text letting my family members know that I love them. This burger will feed two, I couldn't finish it, and everyone will be satisfied. If I had to describe Wisconsin with a food this burger would be it: beef, brat, bacon, and cheese. Wisconsin should adopt this burger as the state burger and have it available at all interstate crossings. Oh yea, the beer I had, George Ruder's German Pils, was fantastic! Now it is time for me to go into a food coma.
(4)Alison S.
I've been here several times and have been completely satisfied each time. We stayed at the Courtyard, which is right next door, so we came over for Sunday brunch. I was a little bit worried that with the standard pub fare I wouldn't be able to get a light brunch option, but when I asked, I was able to get an egg white omelet with a nice side of fruit. They also have several gluten free options. Lovely service and pretty great microbrews. Overall, we like this place and keep on coming back because of the consistently good service and food.
(4)K P.
I ordered cheese curds, fish fry, one beer, one mixed drink and my total came out to be $36.xx. I am giving three stars bc I feel like this place is a bit overpriced considering the food was mediocre.
(3)Amy P.
I've been to the Great Dane in Madison and enjoyed it so on a girls weekend in Wausau we decided to have dinner at the Great Dane. I was so disappointed! Two of us ordered the Japanese Tuna Roll salad. I think the salad was made 3 days before! The rice noodles taste terrible cold, and the tuna rolls were awful and i love tuna rolls! I told my waiter and he did nothing. Didn't even offer something else or to take it off our bill. My sister ordered the tomato mushroom bisque which she enjoyed. I think my other sister ordered the onion soup and she enjoyed it. Can't remember what my cousins ordered but it must have been OK. The beer is good and a nice atmosphere. We were seated right away and the service was so so. We did return late in the evening because we heard that they had dancing. It was quite a site to see! We enjoyed the appetizers we ordered for our drunken munchies. The artichoke dip & wings were great! Wide menue variety but Do not order the Tuna Roll Salad! Thank you for offering a Gluten Free menue!
(2)Teri G.
Food was satisfying after a day of riding at Granite Peak (Rib Mountain). There were a few vegetarian options, I had the Paoli Veggie Sandwich which was good. My BF had the beef brisket, said it was good. I had a unique winter beer, with vanilla and cinnamon flavors, pretty good. BF made the comment that all waitresses wear tight shirts and short skirts (eg. Hooters), which seemed accurate. Large space, a few families were dining, seemed to be welcoming for kids. Not fine dining like Hinterland (GB), but good food if you are looking for something that's not a chain establishment. Food was average, not the most flavorful or creative dishes I've had. Prices were reasonable.
(3)Amanda F.
The Dane burger was delicious! And the service was great. Have been to other Great Dane restaurants, never let down.
(4)Sheller K.
Pretty good! I've eaten here several times while traveling for work in the area. Wings are yummy, as is the hummus and Mac and cheese. Wasn't a big fan of the chicken pot pie, but I try something new every time. Will definitely be back on my next trip to Wausau.
(4)Jeff K.
Serendipity can be great sometimes, especially when it comes to food. My wife had a craving for fish tacos and I saw them on the on line menu. So we cruised over to the Great Dane where I have been 3 or 4 times since it opened. We were seated at a table next to some friends and they mentioned some of their favorite dishes. I like walleye and they said that it was on the menu. Indeed it was! (But I didn't see it on the on line menu.) I gave the Pan fried Walleye ($14.) a try! Very good- excellent. The sides were very good. My wife and I also had an appetizer: Hummus Plate ($8.75). Very good. They have a large and varied menu. So far I've not had a dish that I would describe as heavenly or divine. Just very good food served by friendly, attentive staff is a hokey pseudo English Tudor hall environment. Prices are reasonable too. Some parts are bar like and not suitable for kids but much of the dining area is nice for kids. Tiffany mentioned the calamari: I will try it some time to compare with a place like Olive Garden where the calamari is very good - excellent.
(4)Jerrell O.
Fun place, great environment. Loved the in house sodas- root beer was amazing. Great menu make me want to come back. Sever we was spread thin but pleasant to us.
(4)Sherry C.
This place is more of a family place in my opinion, High scale bar food.. The service was horrible, I had to order two drinks at a time to stay ahead of the game because our server took her sweet time checking on us... I had to stop other wait staff to get our server to come over to our table.. Non the less, I will not go back unless for some reason I have to..
(4)Laurence P.
Been there quite a few time! Great place! Food is great, beer excellent (or so I have been told)... Personally I enjoyed the cider very much, as well as their Bison burgers!
(4)Tania H.
Wow, they had one of the most diverse menu selections. The bacon brat burger on the pretzel roll was very tasty and huge. You get one patty of beef and one of brat. The side of deep fried plantains brought out a sweetness and crispy goodness. The African peanut stew had a ton of flavor and nice and thick. Wish we could have tried the beers, but we were headed to work after lunch.
(5)Lisa J.
Beer and soda was good. Food was just ok. Fish tacos were fried and dry. Burgers were good and kids liked the Mac and cheese.
(3)Sandra C.
Drove by here the other day and I decided this will be a stop for dinner. The rain and lightning didn't stop me from going here and I am glad that we did. Nice roomy restaurant with great staff. Lots of variety to choose from and it will take you a minute to decide. I decided to get a cup of African Peanut Stew and the Sherman Street Salad. Both dishes was very good. I still had room for dessert, I got their Southern Comfort Peach Bread Pudding without the Southern Comfort...I know you're thinking what in the world? Yes I got it without the SC, because that's my choice and let me tell you....that Peach Bread Pudding was the best I've ever had. I'll be back in a years time and I will be here to try something else...
(4)Zachary J.
Good Bear, Good Food, Good atmosphere. Bad....don't try to make this place some bs club in Central Wisconsin at night, it just doesn't make sense. If somehow they can make this place enjoyable after 10pm and not wigger-vil it would be 5-star
(4)Adam A.
Run of the mill. Nice atmosphere and O.K food. The beer is the only reason to go.
(2)Markus L.
My wife and I visited this establishment earlier last month. The place is very large and is full of dark hard wood designs. I'm not a big fan of dark restaurants, so the color schemes did not appeal to my tastes. They have a good selection of beers and their own brewed beers as well as root beer. The food came in a good portion and the plating designs were decent. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful with the menu and the atmosphere was quiet. I did however find out that the Great Dane also has a "club" scene at night. Unfortionately, the "club" scene was pretty dead and the drinks were a bit overpriced. Spent $60 on 6 shots... I'd say, if dimly lit eating establishments do not bother you and beer is a must, then I'd say visit the Great Dane. If you prefer something brighter with a more lively atmosphere, go else where.
(3)Nancy R.
Stopped here as we were driving north to Rhinelander. We had a good meal and good beer. Service was good as well. I would definitely recommend this as a good place to eat in Wausau!
(4)Tiffany L.
I really really like this place. I've dined in here and we've carried out and both type of experiences have been pretty darn delightful. Their reuben is one of the best! I was craving some tuna tataki and theirs did not disappoint. Their wings were pretty decent - really enjoyed the honey szechuan. The 5-alarm hot wings were good, typical good variety, I don't care for their calamari or their beer bread at all. My husband enjoyed the schnitzelwhich. Servers was friendly when we dined in and food came out very quickly. This is definitely becoming one of our favorite dining spots in Wausau.
(4)Chris C.
Really fancy looking exterior with equally nice interior space. I really liked the fact you could see all the brewing equipment and tanks through windows in the side of the bar. Multiple seating areas and a very large bar area. There also were pool tables and high tops in an area next to the bar. They have 12 beers on tap everyday and you can get a sampler with anywhere from 4 to all 12 beers. I really liked that you could pick the number of beers you could get in a sampler so you could weed out the styles you don't like. The food menu was extensive and all of the options sounded very good. I ended up starting with the beer battered cheese curds. They were really good. The curds were fresh and the amount of beer batter was not over whelming. For my meal I had the southwest tortellini which was slightly spicy and very flavorful. There was also a very generous amount of chicken in the dish.
(4)James S.
Updated review: I liked this place as a restaurant, but I decided to stop in for a late Saturday night when they had a DJ... and the place turns into a club (or tries to). Not really a good experience. Music was lame. Crowd was thuggish. Great Dane should keep doing what it does best (good food and beer in a warm, comfortable environment) and avoid trying to become a club in the 'hood.
(2)Nate C.
This place was nice for something up in Wisconsin..lol Friendly staff and patrons....Good food, good beer and the price wasn't bad. Kinda reminds me of Fox and Hound here in Illinois without the pool tables. Too bad the Fish Fry wasn't all you can eat. and the fish tacos had flour tortillas, but still delicious
(4)Manny S.
I've been up to Wausau a few times and never knew about this place. We found it via word-of-mouth and for a brewery it's the definite go-to place after a long day of skiing Granite Peak. Although I don't drink beer my peers said that the brewskis went down smooth. Oh and upfront warning to Chicagoans: you are smack dab in the middle of Cheeseheadlandia so be forewarned that it's also a sports bar so I need not mention that you'll be surrounded by green and yellow jerseys! Other than that it's a very clean and modern-ish bar, plenty of seating and some better than average pub grub. The only real complaint is finding the entrance; you'll need to drive through the parking lot of the Courtyard Marriott.
(4)Chris P.
Read the reviews on Yelp and since we were staying right next door at the Courtyard Marriott, seemed like a go for dinner. My daughter ordered the Chipotle Chicken Quesadilla and loved it. It comes with rice and beans and portions were generous. I tried it and liked it as well. I ordered the Caesar Chicken Wrap and it was OK. It was very heavy on the lettuce and very light on the chicken. Flavor was good, but I've certainly have had better. For a side I requested the mashed potatoes, and here I was impressed. Very good flavor. The service was good, but admittedly it was 8pm on a Sunday night, so the restaurant wasn't busy. The ambiance is cool brewery style without trying too hard. Overall, we both enjoyed our dinner and would go back again if in the area. After dinner, we went to the bar and shot a few games of pool, had a beer and enjoyed the baseball game on the large TV's. Good times!
(4)Lao T.
8 Dollar shuffle board for an hour... Yes please. Their stout gave me the energy and focus to go 5-0 on the board and then enjoy a full rack of baby back ribs. The meat was so tender it was falling off the bone with a fork. The service was shoddy, as it was a Friday night in Wausau, and I'm not sure what else there is there other than the cave, bbw and the HOJO and Texas Roadhouse. The mac and cheese pizza was interesting to look at, and their boneless hot wings (the hottest you can get) were very good. The heat level did not affect the flavor of the chicken and the Asian buffalo wings were a very good follow up after a hot mouth. Overall, this place is huge, the girls are very cute to look at as they perform executive walk - arounds every few minutes, and don't call me sugah seth.
(4)Amy H.
Beautiful building, reasonable prices, great beer. The food, meh, I was really hoping for something mind blowing but ended up with undercooked fish, over cooked dino nuggets, and what appeared to be frozen "beer battered" cheese curds when hoping for freshly battered. The waiter was slow and disinterested in us on a night that he should have been hustling for a tip since they were SLOW. I may try it one more time, to see if thats the "norm" but I am NOT in a hurry to.
(2)Daniel L.
The menu options and micro-beers aren't terribly innovative, but they're all flavored perfectly and made with clearly high-quality ingredients and great care. Absolutely delicious! They could charge a lot more than they do and still be an awesome place to eat.
(5)Amy A.
I would have given this 5 stars, but they have taken away some vegetarian options. However, it is still one of the better places to go in town. I do love that Emerald Isle Stout!
(4)Brittney S.
I absolutely love this place. I started going to the one in downtown Madison and was very excited when I heard they were opening one in Wausau. I come here almost every time I'm in town. I love their variety of beers and I usually go for the beer sampler so I can try a little bit of everything! They have a huge menu with a big variety of different food. From pizza, to peanut stew, to salads, to steak and burgers. I am vegetarian and always have a lot of things to choose from here! The place is huge and has a great atmosphere. Two bars, shuffle board and you can see all the brewing equipment from the front dining room. I will be back again and again!
(4)Karen S.
Went there on a weekday evening, and the place was pretty busy, but I only waited about 10 minutes for a table right at dinner time. The boyfriend ordered a huge burger and brat on a pretzel bun. I had never heard of this, but I tried it and it was absolutely delicious. Huge portion, definitely enough to take home for lunch the next day. He also got a couple pints of the Crop Circle Wheat. Every time we go there, he has to have a glass or two of this beer. He says it's terrific. I had the portabella mushroom burger. Perfectly seasoned, and cooked through, without being mushy like some of them can be. I also liked the sauce with it and the generous portion of pub fries. Previously, I had the salad with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes and asparagus which has a wonderful homemade balsamic dressing and lots of complex flavor. That dish is a must-try in my opinion. The wait staff at the Great Dane was super friendly to us. We moved to town recently, and they really made us feel welcome. I am definitely coming back!
(5)Brad B.
Having enjoyed many a pint at the Great Dane locations in Madison & Fitchburg, I was pleased to see that Wausau had one too, when I rolled into town last night. Not to be nit-picky because this place is quite enjoyable, but IIRC the food at the Madison area locations was better. Neat feature of this Dane location is the various seating areas with different things on TV. I missed out on a quiet little nook that had a LCD TV showing Family Guy last night...oh well, next time I will know.
(4)Jerrick A.
Always enjoy the dane! They have a daily drink special on a flavor of the home brew for only $2.50 a pint. Try the Dane brat burger.......... Awesome
(5)Chuck D.
Great Microbeer, Great Food, Great Service, Great overall experience.
(4)Kathi G.
We ate at one of the bars instead of a table. Initially the bartender was efficient but not super friendly but improved as the evening wore on. My honey pepper salmon club was very tasty except for the wilted lettuce and white tomato. The sweet potato tots were very good, as well. If you are a wheat beer enthusiast, try the Crop Circle Wheat. It was excellent.
(3)Todd F.
I'm torn between giving Great Dane 3 or 4 stars...if I could, I've give them a solid 3.5. We were visiting from out of town and chose Great Dane based on the overall positive reviews. I started off with a stout that I can only describe as "meh". It was ok, but lacked the bitterness of a good stout. My daughter ordered the Brats and Mash, which were very good. I ordered the Argentinian Gaucho Steak, which I liked, but the steak was a bit tough, even for skirt steak. On the plus side, our waitress was friendly and attentive. Had the beer and my dinner been just a little better, I'd have gone 4 stars. I'd come back and try some of their other offerings if I was back in Wausau.
(3)Dan N.
Good to very good food and service. Nice dining for families and couples. Also has a nice sports bar area separate from the restaurant area. Unbelievable Sunday brunch!
(4)Todd H.
Great Dane is in the location of the former Hereford and Hops, and the improvement can't be measured. GD came in and gutted the place and created a beautiful establishment. But the biggest improvement has been the food and service, which is some of the top in Wausau. Great Dane serves upscale pub food. But there is more than just fried fare. The menu is vast, but unlike some establishments which have a big menu full of mediocre food. Practically everything on the menu is delicious. They also have a few unusual dishes for Wausau, including an African style stew, and their take on tandoori chicken. My favorite, the Ahi Tuna salad. Their fish fry is also delicious, and it's even served with a side of malt vinegar, just like in the UK. Finally, on to the beer and deserts. The dozen or so beers brewed on premises are fantastic, and their deserts sublime. I had the rhubarb apple crisp, (to die for) and the tiramisu, (even MORE to die for). It's also important to note, the place packs in some very attractive people, both young and older. Not sure if they take reservations, but the place is always packed. Out of all the places you can pick to dine at, choose this one and you won't go wrong.
(5)Kristen Z.
The Great Dane has a really cool vibe. There are three sections to the main floor: the traditional dining area, the middle bar area (which has pool tables, pub tables and shuffleboard) and the brewery/bar/pub type dining area. All sections have a distinctly different atmosphere while blending together. The food is pretty good for the price in the Wausau area. It is basically sandwiches/burgers, etc. but with a twist. The Black and Tan Cheddar Burger and the Tomato and Mushroom Bisque soup are my favorites. However, the beer is of course the main focus (having the on-site Great Dane microbrewery). I love the Landmark Lite, German Pils and APA.
(4)Justin M.
I had the Texarkana burger and it was delicious. My fiancé had the apple wood bacon burger and she thought it was good. She also had a dinner salad with Gorgonzola salad dressing and she liked it. For desert we had the the black and tan cheesecake brownie. Normally we don't get desert, but since we are on vacation we decided to splurge. The beer selection is amazing! Everything was so good we cut snowboarding short to go back for dinner the next night!
(5)Shawn C.
Great brew pub and great food
(5)Debbie M.
I frequent the Great Dane in Wausau, The service is great along with the food. In addition I also have a bakery business: Loving Traditions Cakery LLC, Weston. I work alot with the Banquet Manager, Tiffany; she is fantastic to work with and coordianate weddings with. The brides and grooms say the same thing. Great Service, Great Food what more could you ask for!
(5)Daniel P.
Outstanding pan fried walleye and hash browns, great salad. Very cozy warm place with a cool bar and booths. Beer was awesome, definitely will return. Service was exceptional also.
(4)Jason G.
My fiance and I ate at the Great Dane for a second time last week and it was quite busy while we were there. It was a Saturday night and there were many group functions in the place. So it took us a little while to get seated, but had good service once that happened. We ordered the boneless buffalo wings as an appetizer. We are a fan of Applebees and these were good but not as good. My fiance ordered a rueben, and she said it was delicious. I had the Texarkana burger, also very delish.
(4)Westons M.
Great fresh food. You can tell it's home-made fresh ingredients, not standard bagged pre-packaged things. And the beer is great too! We spend less here on dinner and drinks than we do at the local fancy supper clubs and in my opinion the food is so much fresher.
(5)Ron G.
We arrived on a Thursday afternoon and the Great Dane had the atmosphere of a funeral home with TVs. All dark wood. The beer was great. I didn't even know they served pub grub since a menu wasn't forthcoming.

Beautiful bar, comfortable and friendly. Food is good and the beer is good too along with fair pricing. Try all the beer you want before ordering a full glass. Great place for large groups.

Arf! This place is doggone good. After a "ruff" day you'll love a plate of the scrumptious pub fries. You'll want to Sit and Stay and when you're done all you'll be able to say is Bow Wow *Wow*! Next time your friends are "hounding" you for a place to eat, bark at them to go to the Great Dane, and they'll say Good Boy!

Dark atmosphere, pleasant enough. Didn't try the beer, but heard it was good. (1 star) Good service. Server was always around. (1 star) Food: Pizza=gross. Sub-Dominos level here. Garlic overload is not always a good thing. Wings=below average, very uninteresting. Burger looked "ok," but was smaller than the bun. With so many better places to eat in Wausau, I would not return.

I really enjoy this restaurants unique menu -- especially here in the central WI area. I was particularly happy to see their vegetarian options. While not vegan, I do enjoy being able to get a lighter, healthier meal now and then. They also have a nice Sunday brunch buffet. The only downside is, when they have this buffet, they only run a limited menu with it. While I did not get the buffet, I did help my son dish up and I was impressed with the selection and variety with everything from French toast to salmon. Also, for a buffet, everything looked pretty fresh and well-stocked. The wait staff was also pretty friendly and accomodating. My husbands meal took longer than the rest, as the kitchen burned it the first time around, and the waitress apologized and made sure to give my husband his choice of free dessert to make up for the inconvenience. We will definitely continue to dine here -- especially when looking for a little something "different" in the Wausau area.

Get the cheese curds, fish tacos, crisp calamari and (if it's Friday) fish fry! Also get their crop circle wheat, which tastes like a fresher version of blue moon. After living in Wausau for a number of years, Great Dane became one of my favorite places to eat and drink. While they don't have that many TVs (for sports), you can't beat this place for march madness, if you come here early enough to secure a couple of seats by the bar (in front of the TVs). Service is typically good, but like most pubs and restaurants, it can be hit or miss depending on who you get. On a reunion dinner yesterday, we had great food, great drinks and great services. I've missed you Great Danes!

My husband and I were traveling to Northern Wisconsin and needed a lunch place. Found this great pub right off the highway. Cheese Curds were delicious! Beer was great. The Back and Tan cheddar burger with buffalo is one of my favorite burgers ever. The Alpine grilled cheese is so much more than grilled cheese! Server was helpful and friendly. Great place!

We stopped for a bite to eat on our way to a Packer game. My hubby had The Black and Tan burger with a Stone of Scone beer. I had the French Dip with the Landscape Lite. Both of our meals and refreshments were delicious!! Service was good too! Would stop in again!

Here on business and this place was recommended by the workers. Food was great I had their special a ribeye with roasted potatoes so good but the service was a little rushed and uncaring kind of disappointed.

The beer selection is solid but be forewarned about how strong it is. The food is just mediocre, don't bother with a tuna steak. And sometimes the service can be a bit lacking as far as in the personality department.

The location is perfect if you're staying at the Courtyard next door, but I'd say go into town to Red Eye Brewing if you're looking for a great brewery/food experience. Great Dane's beers are really just familiar beers with a different name. My dad had the Pilsner and it tasted like Miller Lite. I had Emerald Isle Stout and it was exactly like Guinness. Not exactly craft beer at this place. The atmosphere is odd too, but the building and bar is really neat. I had a shake and it was pretty ok. Overall, very average place.

Took my family there today at noon at there wasn't 20% full. We ordered and it took 1hr 25 minutes for us to get served. When our meal arrived, my son's scrambled eggs were cold and steak was full of fat. My wings were not fully cooked and were not good at all. I wouldn't waste $85 at Great Dane again.

I would give the Great Dane more stars if I could. We utilized the banquet room and banquet managers Stacy and Katie for a wedding reception in June 2015. I cannot say enough great things about how everything went. My wife and I were expecting some hiccups to occur as is custom with a 200+ person event. Not a single thing went wrong and everything was just how we had planned. We met with Katie and Stacy quite a few times to go over all the details. Each time we met it was like we were just picking up where we had left at our previous meeting. They were very well organized and easy to work with. Then Katie got a new job in the beginning of June. Stacy emailed me and told me she was now the banquet manager and we started to work with her on all the details. I was somewhat nervous because at this time, our wedding was coming up within the month. Stacy and Katie might as well have been the same person. We picked up where we had left off with Katie and carried on as if nothing happened. All in all, working with Katie and Stacy could not have gone any smoother. They were both knowledgeable, professional, and willing to go the extra mile. Everything at the Great Dane was top notch for our wedding reception and would highly recommend them for any large gathering.

Great place! Delicious food, and always unique! Not your every day food, nothing plain Jane here!! Love it every time!

The food was great. The service was good. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and the specials and the beer on tap. I would recommend it to anyone visiting the Wausau area.

Solid place, I think the beers are a bit more strong than advertised. 2 pool tables, shuffle puck tunes, sausage plate was quiet tasty. Would go back in a minute if I was local.

Consistently awesome! The Great Dane has wonderful food that is prepared in a timely manner. Their staff has always been friendly and helpful, which I truly appreciate. Plus they have a beautiful patio, perfect for summer dining! If you haven't tried them out yet, I would certainly recommend it.

Managers aren't concern about their customers when it comes to listening & watching something other than a Packers game. Bears fans are treated like brown stuff... I won't return and spend my money at a place like this.

First off, location is easy in and out as it's close to the highway. There are always plenty of parking even if my usual friends and family of 30 should end up there one day with no reservations. The diversity and quality of food that you get from Great Dane to other area restaurants is definitely better. I would say the foods are seasoned well and cooked properly. I've had their cheesy onion soup, to the prime rib, their pizzas, and avocado burgers, fries, a few mixed drinks and tab beer. Nothing to complain about. It' was "good food" but nothing to sing and dance about. For the area, it's a nice joint to sink your teeth into. My friends are regulars and the wait staff seem to be friendly and attentive with everyone.

The food was OK, but the server kept getting our requests wrong. The beer is ok for a microbrewery. It was better as Herford and Hops.

The food is always amazing. (I suggest the smothered and cover fried chicken) The service is great. Their beer is fantastic and so are their bloody marys. A place we bring friends and family from out of town because we know everyone will enjoy their food and time.

Good food, can get expensive, bar service was nice. They have fried cheese curds, which are hand battered, which a chili ranch to dip (although tasted more like a chive or dill). The dipping sauce was really good. Ordered a Great Dane burger, which came with artichoke dip on the burger to serve as the cheese, which was extremely tasty! Husband ordered the brat pretzel burger (messing the name up completely, sorry), which had two patties, (one beef, one brat) and a pretzel bun (which was so soft and delicious). The pub fries were tasty and crisp. Sides of condiments are extra, which was frustrating, because by the time you have drinks, appetizers, meals, etc, your meal is expensive. Husband ordered a beer, which he said was good. I ordered a liquor drink, which was pretty good, but the place is known for their beer.

In Chicago it's usually a got fancier name, but here it's simply called the "meat and cheese plate". Don't let the name fool you. It is a carefully selected platter of delicacies that when paired with the right beer elevates the working man's drudgery. Mustard, pickles, stanky blue cheese, cured meats, pretzel bread....cold and plentiful homemade I.P.A on tap. Consider renaming Wausau... Heaven. Also, that chicken peanut stew is a flavor journey worth taking.

This place is going down hill fast. Service?-what service? The staff was preoccupied with their own beer rather than filling mine and getting our bill for dinner. I also visited the beer garden this past summer and thought their taps weren't clean. Left a bad taste in my mouth- literally. I don't think I will be back. Sad when a place like this has potential in Wausau, but is poorly managed.
