We had a delivery order for almost $50 and all four of us we very unsatisfied. The food had a bad smell, the taste was very blah. For that kind of money the food should have been at least up to par. It fell very short.. I have noticed that over the years the food and quality has gone down the drain. We will never eat at or recommend CG

What a beautifully decorated restaurant in the revitalized portion of downtown Wausau! I love their Sushi; it's quite good. They have some very good dishes that are served in an attractive manner. My review is based on only two visits + getting take out Sushi once.

Love this place!! The food is reasonably priced and is the best in the area. The decor may not be the "fanciest" in town, but the food and service are the main reasons to go. If you have not already tried it and love Chinese food...try it.

Well, I had placed an order for takeout and they forgot the rice. I called when I returned home. I was offered delivered rice, which by the time I would have received it, the rest of my food would have been cold. I was also offered free food on the next order, so I accepted, although disappointed. I made a call tonight to claim this "make-up" food, and to my suprise, they had credited me with the rice (that I had already paid for) only. I asked to speak with the manager (with whom i am a friend from high school). He agreed with me that not getting the rice with my order, essentially ruined my family's dinner. The manager then offered a free apetizer, but was not willing to fairly compensate me for their mistake, after all, I did "get the rest of my entree". Hope that was worth losing a customer chang garden. (Sorry Mike) But people should go to Pe King right down the street. Doubt you will be treated like that there and food is just as good. I would give 0 stars for customer service, but the lowest the ratings go is 1 star.

To be honest, I normally don't review restaurants when I am out of town, but this place left such an impression on me that I just had to. I was in Wausau visiting some of my boyfriend's extended family, and coming from a great food city like NYC I wasn't expecting much in a city the size of Wausau, boy was I wrong!!! We stayed at Jefferson street Inn and the friendly staff there recommended we go across the street for dinner. I was a bit skeptical since I happen to LOVE Chinese food and I happen to be Asian, to my surprise they also had sushi. Sushi in a city nowhere near an ocean kind of scared me to be honest, but I decided to order some anyways. Now onto the actual review! The Host was really friendly and we were seated promptly (like less then a 5 min wait on a Friday night), the place is a lot bigger then it looks from the outside, and the decor is really nice but it still has that casual laid back atmosphere. One thing that really caught my eye is the fact that the place is spotless. I sometimes have issues going to Chinatown in NYC because the places there tend to be a bit on the dirty side. Well not this place. You can tell the staff/owners really take care of the place. The service was surprisingly good for how busy they were. The waitress was also very knowledgable about the menu, even recommended dishes to us. She kept checking tables that obviousely were not her's and even gave us a bit of backround info on the place when I asked her how long they had been in business. She also mentioned that they had just opened a new location that has Teppanyaki. I LOVE Teppanyaki, I wish we would have had time to try their other location. Now on to the good stuff.. The food! The menu was HUGE and the prices were so reasonable that we ended up ordering a ridiculous amount of food just so we could try a few different dishes that were recommended to us, surprisingly even the sushi was priced cheaper then I expected for a landlocked state. First of all I have to say that the Hot and sour soup and the fried dumplings were the best I have had in any chinese restaurant. You can usually tell if the food is going to be good by how well the dumplings and soup is made. They were both amazing and the dumplings were obviousely hand made, not the pre ordered frozen kind. I ended up ordering the Honey Garlic chicken and omg was it yummy! I have never seen this dish on a NYC menu and I wish I had because I sure do miss it! My boyfriend had orange chicken and the server recommended we try the Lilly Roll for sushi, both were amazing and the portions were big enough for leftovers that came in handy later at the Hotel. I should also mention that they had a really lovely bar area and a better than normal selection for a Chinese Restaurant. So overall a big thumbs up for Chang Garden, I can't think of any reason why you shouldn't give the place a try if your in the area! The next time I am in Wausau I will definately be dining there again or getting delivery.

Great food at great prices. Each item is made as ordered, which is perfect for my picky little eaters. The atmosphere is inviting and the staff and service cannot be beat.

Yes the interior is beautiful but I could do with less beauty and better food. The Wonton Soup for 2 was overpriced with wontons that sat too long in the broth. The beef fried rice was tasty and so was the Hubs Sesame Chicken. The Beef Egg Foo Yong was disasterous. They were simply patties of fried scrambled eggs with no veggies or meat inside. They topped the patties with sliced beef and brown gravy that was too sweet for my liking. Our waitress did not know the menu and could not answer 2 questions I posed but did come back with answers. I may try it again but would do a simple carry out dinner.

Great little Chinese restaurant, but it's a little short on atmosphere and long on price. That said, I wouldn't hesitate to return.

My wife and I ate here three times the last time visited Wausau. The fried rice is very good... some of the other dishes are your generic americanized Chinese food... but that's what most people here want. I heard they have a special Taiwan-style beef noodle if you ask or order ahead... will check that out next time. The owners are very friendly people from Taiwan. +1

I have eaten here a number of times and first if all I would recommend their other location across town in Weston. It is newer, trendier and usually has a lot more customers. Plus the bathrooms are actually in the restaurant! Of the dishes I have tried I would highly recommend the sesame beef and the orange chicken. Last night I had the shrimp fried rice and it was not nearly as good. The dish was sticky and the shrimp where rubbery. Each time I come I always have sushi. Once again it is usually pretty good. Last night they added a spicy sauce to my California Roll ... Yuck! And the shrimp in the Tempura Roll was cold. I'm pretty sure it was premade. I'm giving a 3 star only because I usually am very happy with my meal. Tonight.... Not so much. Hope this is a one time thing!

The decoration is nothing special the service was quick and attentive the food was Ok Szechuan chicken as so often the chicken was pre-cooked or boiled and then just quickly stir fried it's sad that they don't even take the time to stir fry fresh meat but it seems we ask for it with our constant request for speedy service. We should be prepared to wait good things take time. The sauce was the run of the mill Szechuan style. The price was OK 14$ if I come back to Wausau this place will not be on my list.

I thought the place was attractive. The sign said special: Strawberry Chicken, soup included. Sounded great, I didn't even look at the menu. After I got a wonton soup in a tasty broth, I'm notified that they are out of the strawberry sauce. I noticed hunan dishes. The chicken wasn't just bland, but no flavor whatsoever. The sauce was so scant it couldn't bury this fact. It's convenient to walk from the hotel. There may be other things to try, not the hunan, and chicken is a luck of the draw. Servers are friendly, young people.

Pros: service was great, and atmosphere was cozy. Cons: the food for the price. Chang Garden was the first place my friend and I tried, when I moved to Wausau. Between the two of us, we ordered a combination of sushi rolls, a soup, two chicken dishes and a noodle dish. We finished majority of the food, mainly due to us being hungry, and not because of the taste. When I had the opportunity to try other places in the area (Mandarin, Hot Wok, Shanghai Grill, Peking), I realized Chang Garden's good for atmosphere, service and an extensive menu of offerings. May take out-of-town visitors to here as it's a nice sit-down place, but hoping their food will be much better next time.

Disappointed in the sushi menu. When we first moved here we called to ask if they had sushi (we asked specifically for spicy tuna because it's my favorite) they said they had a lot, but they don't. Pepper tuna is NOT the same as spicy tuna... However, we did try fried rice and mango chicken. The fried rice was yummy and was pretty much what you'd expect from a Chinese joint as far a fries rice goes. The mango chicken though, wow. Yeah I really can't think of a better word. It's not a combo I would have put together, but mango and chicken, wow.... SOOOO good!!

They're open on Sundays, yay! Most likely, it would have taken us quite some time to get over to Chang Garden. I had my heart set on some moo shu pork and typical place was closed so we decided to give Chang Garden a try and we're glad we did! Their dumpling are very good. I'm dumpling picky and these are somewhat close to my most favorite fried dumpling in the entire world (Hunan's in Mincoqua). They have a beautiful doughy skin and nice and thick and meaty on the inside. Very tasty. My husband had the honey garlic chicken and it's ordinarily not something I care for but it was very good here. I, of course, went with the moo shu pork and it was good. Just good. Not as good as my favorite moo shu pork place in Wausau, but fine enough and satisfied my craving. I think they use too much white pepper at Chang Garden, I like white pepper just fine, but in moderation, it can easily overpower a dish in my non-Chinese opinion. I'd like to say we'd go back to Chang Garden and we might, on a Sunday. I found them to be priced a little high - but I guess you're paying for a fancier atmosphere?! Service was inexperienced, but very nice. They have what looks to be a nice sushi menu but oh my! on the prices. Those prices are right off the menu of the nicer sushi hot spots in Chicago or NYC... I suppose there isn't a huge demand here so it is what it is... we'll see how I feel about those prices when I can no longer say no to my ravenous sushi craving brain!

I've lived in a lot of cities including NYC, and also Wausau for a time. I still can't find better Chinese than this place anywhere (and believe me, I've tried). All of their dishes surpass, in my opinion, everything I've tried elsewhere. Highlights for me are orange chicken, honey garlic chicken, crab rangoon, egg foo yung, their dumplings are out of this world, volcano shrimp....really the list goes on and on. It must be just right for my taste palette because I've never had anything I didn't like. I like the atmosphere too, both here and the even more ornate Weston location. It's a good place to be. Service is generally good and friendly - no major complaints. If you're in Wausau, I couldn't recommend this place enough. I don't live there any more and sometimes I get downright SAD that I can't eat their food any time I want. My personal favorite restaurant in Wausau.

Chang Garden is a beautiful restaurant in downtown Wausau. The staff is incredibly friendly and the service is outstanding. My husband ordered the sashimi off of their sushi menu and was served wonderful slices of yellow fin tuna and salmon with wasabi and shaved ginger which sat on a bed of pickled radishes. He said it was fantastic. I ordered the Kung Pao chicken and asked for more carrots and no water chestnuts which was done perfectly without question. My husband had the shrimp and scallops and the amazing thing about this dish was the amount of seafood that he was served. We've been to some places where they give you 3 scallops. There were so many shrimp and perfectly cooked scallops he couldn't believe it. The dishes were flavorful and the ingredients were fresh. Everything about this place was as good as it gets.

Pros: The price was good for the taste and amount. Cons: Food similar to what I can get at king buffet, nothing unique from other china place besides make it look nice on a plate. But I would go there again if i wanted to take my date out on a nice casual dine-in place.

I have to tell you, I am really glad I recently got an I-Phone and have discovered Yelp because the review I just read from "Damian A" really makes me livid. I have lived in Wausau for 22 years and have dined at every chinese restaraunt/buffet over the years including Billy Moy back when it was the very first Chinese joint in all of Wausau. I am Asian and I have traveled and lived all over Asia. If there's one thing the Chang Garden is not, it's "authentic Chinese". As a matter of fact I wouldn't call any place in Wausau "authentic chinese, they are all "Americanized Chinese" and mostly all "all you can eat" buffets. So for Damian to try and compare this place to someplace to food he had somewhere in Asia is just silly. My food experiences have all been good In the 4 years I have been coming to Chang Garden. The owners and the staff are extremely friendly. What initially got me here to try them was the fact they serve sushi and that they weren't a buffet, (I feel the quality of food is always better when it's not all you can eat). Name one other place for me that makes their dumplings from scratch. You can tell that they're not the frozen pre-made kind that others serve. Not to mention the place is spotless, have you ever seen such a clean dining room in a Chinese joint??? My only complaint is that a couple of times they forgot my appetizer on a delivery but they had NP delivering it to me right away once I pointed out the mistake. As far as price goes, they are no more expensive then say the Mandarin and alot cheaper then Peking. I don't even see how you can compare a place like Chang Garden to a buffet? There's a reason Buffets are all you can eat and I think we all know what that reason is. I would gladly pay 14.50 for a meal that is not loaded with MSG and is going to give me the runs the next day. I should also point out that they are one of the few Chinese restaraunt in the whole city that you can walk into and see mostly locals waiting on tables. Not that I have anything against immigrants (my family Immigrated), but there is nothing more frustrating then having an order come out all wrong because your server couldn't understand your order. "the ad in the phone book claims that it was voted best ethnic restaurant & To-Go... funny it doesn't say who voted. because its a lie" Actually, I noticed the plaques hanging on the wall for "Best Ethnic Food" and "Best To-Go Food" on the wall behind the counter you pay at when you leave. The awards are given out by City Pages, who every year does an anonymous "best of" vote by its readers on area businesses. I should know, I vote every year on all my favorite places. So next time you want to call someone a "liar", do your homework first. I'm sorry if I am coming off a bit harsh about Damian A's review. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Maybe Chang did screw his food up so bad that there was no way he could enjoy it, every business has a bad day maybe it was Chang's turn? Or maybe this person has something personal against this business (who knows, maybe their a disgruntled ex employee),. I don't know. What I do know is that I won't let one of my favorite restaraunts be bashed without at least putting in my 2 cents.

This is a pretty nice little restaurant downtown. There is quite a large menu, so it is easy to find something for everyone. Staff is friendly and attentive, and food is pretty tasty. I think it's probably the best bet for Chinese type grub in the Wausau area.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
