We were in the neighborhood last week, and stopped in for sushi for dinner. There was one other person seated at the sushi bar. The decor is classy and there is no American Top 40 blaring out of the speakers, which is a huge relief. Upon walking in, we were greeted right away by the world's happiest, friendliest server who gave us a menu and seated us. While waiting for our food, we received complimentary house salads, and after we finished those, a complimentary Korean veggie pancake. Our drinks were refilled so quickly that my mom ended up with water in her not even halfway empty soda because she was not quick enough. The sushi rolls arrived shortly after we finished our complimentary appetizer. While it may SEEM odd to see a Korean item in a sushi restaurant, the majority of "Japanese restaurants" in smaller states and cities are not "authentic" or even Japanese owned, and are usually "fusion" mixing one or more types of Asian cuisine, so this is not unusual. More importantly, documents on the wall at Sakura show that two of the chefs here graduated from sushi programs in Japan. There are a variety of rolls, with enough to choose from that are cooked or raw. The ones that we chose were all delicious and one of them, a pumpkin roll was not something i had ever seen at any of the other 8 or 9 local sushi restaurants I have been to. Based on this experience, I would highly recommend Sakura. I cannot comment on how it may be during busy times, but I would suggest dinner time. The rolls are priced similarly to other local sushi restaurants, and the variety is good. Parking may be difficult at another time as it is located in "downtown" Waukesha. Sakura in Waukesha is not related to Sakura in Menomonee Falls, but I also highly recommend that one.

Good is not Japanese. It tastes Korean. and not great Korean. I think it's because the owner is Korean. The owner/server lady is super nice, friendly, efficient, fast and perfectly lovely. The other servers are all lost. They try to be nice, but just aren't efficient. first off, they're slow. It's really hard to catch their eye to ask for more water or a napkin because they'll ignore you. In fact, I shouldn't have to ask for a refill on water anyway. Very frustrating. But again, the owner/server is really good. Brings life to the place. she just needs to hire and train better.

This place rocks! The food is delicious, the service is great and the atmosphere was fantastic. Highly recommend it to anyone in the area.

First of all, this place is in a great spot downtown. It's very nice inside. The staff is above and beyond friendly. The nice waitress even remembered my boyfriend and I when we visited from six months prior. She was extremely kind and attentive to our table. Five stars for service. The sushi is good, but not great. We tried several of the specials. Our favorite was actually one of the steak ones, but we don't really consider that true sushi. The other rolls were good, but many of them had a bit too much cream cheese. We'd come here again.

I was here for 3 yr Anniversary. This is a very nice place. First off it's very clean. It's located in nice cozy spot. Had Dinner her the Sushi is very fresh also the service is excellent. The owner is on board as well. I will be back to try the rest of there food. They have affordable Fish /Fry on Fridays as well. Great spot for Sushi. Oh I almost forgot to mention they have pillows for you're back to rest you're back on. Very comfy.

Rude management. Known in town to screw over their wait staff on their tips. (Don't work here). Sushi has a lot of rice. Below average quality. I probably won't be coming back.

Joined a friend for lunch here today. Terrific location in downtown Waukesha. We were greeted right away and were given quick and friendly service. I had the salmon four different ways. All were beautifully displayed, fresh, and so good! The place was comfortable and very clean. I couldn't finish my sushi so they packed it up for me to go. I forgot it in the table. We were half way down the street when our Waiter flagged us down with my left over sushi in hand. Wow, that tells you all you need to know about this place and how they value their customers. If you love sushi ... you owe it to yourself to stop here.

My boyfriend and I stumbled into Sakura last night to try some sushi upon reading some reviews. I feel misled. These reviewers must not have tried sushi in other places in Wisconsin, let alone the country. First of all, those documents/certificates belonging to the bald sushi chef? They are the equivalent of a DeVry Tech diploma in Japan. It is aggrandized to give some sense of validity and importance to patrons but it is a laughing stock. Real sushi chefs learn their craft for many years under the tutelage of master chefs (I'm sure you've all seen Jiro on Netflix). This guy probably took a 6 month course and it shows in his lack of flavor in the rice (it was pure rice vinegar) and mayonnaise-heavy spicy tuna/salmon/whatever. I would prefer supermarket sushi over this. My boyfriend ordered the fish fry and it was a simple tempura codfish with a mustard-mayo "tartar sauce". Nothing to rave about. Try Wasabi Sushi in Brookfield for a nearby alternative and open your flavor palate to an acceptable level in sushi from a chef that has tons of experience in Japan and Korea and doesn't frame up his green card or vehicle registration in his restaurant to make his customers feel like he is a big shot.

Stopped here for a late business dinner and was immediately greeted by the warm and friendly proprietors. We had 3 rolls and sashimi and everything was pretty good. The green sky roll was my favorite.

tl;dr Unexpectedly the best Friday fish fry in Waukesha county. Sakura is has a refreshing modern interior, with friendly staff that instantly greets you upon arrival. I did not have any sushi during my visit, as I was here for one special item. Friday Fish Fry. Yup, at a sushi restaurant. This is a must order if you are here on a Friday, as it is unexpectedly the best Friday fish fry in Waukesha county. The meal starts with a salad with peanut dressing, miso soup, and then the fish with crispy panko breading, sticky rice, and an interesting take on a potato pancake is served.

Eh it was okay. Good was alright but pricey in my opinion. The tempura batter was flavorless. I got teriyaki chicken and it was alright. The white rice side was not seasoned and very blah. My friend got sushi and said they had had better. For a $5o Bill plus tip I should have been full at the very least. I won't be returning, sorry.

We've been here (and ordered to go) quite a few times! Food is great, prices are on the high end. I wanted avocado+cucumber (inside out) which is a Cali-roll (minus the crab) --still go charged as much as the full Cali roll. Whatever. It won't stop me from coming back, just annoying. Also have had the vegetable tempura - awesome. Perfectly cooked. The standard starter salad has a great sesame dressing. The black heart roll was good, Philadelphia roll, and crunchy California-tasty. Atmosphere is nice, but during busy times- service is slow!

The food is the best Japanese food I've had since moving back to the US. I always look forward to eating here when I visit WI.

It being Waukesha and all, I was cautiously optimistic as I entered this new find for lunch... and it went downhill from there. The decor and ambiance is there, but that's all this place has going for it. It's been a long time since I've been served bad sushi. Not that the fish was necessarily bad - but the ingredients seems poor in quality and there were none of the usual touches that you see with a sushi joint that has a clue. If you want to get full on rice in your sushi come here. If you like to wait 25 min for your sushi when the place in near emply come here. If you like borderline rude service come here. If you like to pay too much come here. I won't be back though.

A delightful find in a cute downtown. I can't take any credit for this one -- I was visiting a dear friend in Waukesha and requested someplace a bit more exotic than usual for dinner -- and she came up with Sakura for some sushi. We had a group of 5 for a late dinner -- arrived around 9 p.m. (Please note that they close at 10, and if we could do it over I would've liked to go a bit earlier.) Our waitress was extremely friendly and helpful; her English was not flawless but was very good, and I felt it added to the authenticity. Everyone was started with a small salad, served with that wonderful sesame-ginger dressing so common in Japanese restaurants. The menu had a nice variety, including noodle dishes, plenty of veggie-friendly rolls, maki, nigiri and sashimi. It was really hard to choose among the rolls! I started with the citron tea, which was just so good, and I think had candied lemon in the bottom. It was definitely lemon, but it was so sweet (not cloyingly so) that I felt it had to be. We ordered a variety of rolls -- I had what was called a "rock n roll", which was a California roll topped with additional fish, I believe salmon, whitefish and tuna; I also ordered some chicken gyoza. We had both a relative sushi newbie and a girl who grew up eating the stuff in Hawaii, and everyone was pleased. My gyoza were plump, juicy and nicely crisp on one side; my roll was delightful, with buttery fish that melted in my mouth. I also had a taste of a friend's spicy tuna roll, and the spice level on it was quite nice. The restaurant is minimalist and nicely decorated, with cute little touches like ribbon-wrapped chopsticks on individual adorable little rests. Lots of bright wood and open space. There were a few minor snags: nobody was offered refills on anything, or water to drink. It took our waitress quite awhile to offer the lone male in our group a fork to eat his udon noodles. When mochi was ordered for dessert, it was a little unclear that there were only four total balls left, of two flavors, making for a lopsided dessert. And one check got lost in the shuffle, causing some confusion that got sorted out. Still, you might not expect wonderful, fresh sushi in a small town in Wisconsin, so their efforts are admirable and the food went beyond my expectations. And the next time I'm visiting my friend, I'd love to go back with her and try more of their delights.

The owner and wait staff are so friendly. I am glad we have such an authentic restaurant in the area. For vegetarians there are many options, including sweet potato rolls. I would agree that the sushi could be colder;however, I feel like the flavors and saki made up for the sushi temp. The drink menu is also extensive for those who like to dabble in exotic flavors.

Very good!!! We were surprised to find excellent sushi and service in Waukesha coming from a big city in NC. We were here twice in one week! Excellent food, delightful service, and cozy location. Fish was fresh and rolls are reasonably priced. If this was in NC we'd be regulars.

Having only had great experiences here, I'm really shocked at the bad reviews this place has garnered. Sakura is my favorite place to get sushi in the Milwaukee area. Beats all the spots in the actual city, IMO. The people complaining about the sushi not being cold or whatever should just stick to buying sushi from Pick n' Save. See, at Pick n' Save, they have to refrigerate their sushi because it was made like, yesterday, whereas fresh sushi won't be subject to this fact. Fresh shushi should be just under room temperature when served. But annnnyuwayssss, back to the real story. Great atmosphere here, and super positive employees too. I only wish it were closer to my neighborhood. Give it a shot, and try the unfiltered sake too!

Very nice - GREAT location - they have specials (which are good) but they don't really advertise that they do a great job of Sushi & Tempura (my choice is the latter). Excellent and healthy alternative to the typical Chinese, Italian or Mexican..... The Red bean dessert is awesome!

Boy I screwed up when I didn't check with yelp! The waitress was good and helpful, but the fish was warm and the rolls sucked. I ordered the belly of the tuna and it had the long strings of fat that you really can't chew. I have had toro many times and good chiefs cut it off and serve just the tuna. The only thing that was good was the salad. 31.95 plus tip wWHat a rip

I would love to give this place four stars due to their excellent service and warm, modern decor, but the food was just too mediocre and disappointing for me to do it. The spicy tuna roll was like a California roll with some questionable looking tuna smashed on top of it, and it wasn't at all spicy which is important for us as we love spicy food. They had put a little dot of Sriracha sauce on top instead of mixing the tuna with the spices as usual. The edamame seemed as if if had been baked instead of steamed which gave it a stale texture. Maybe they had reheated it. We also had the yaki soba. The noodles and the sauce were both thin and I missed the chewy, yummy texture I usually get from this dish. I really do hope this place improves their food as it is a nice location and the people who worked there were super nice and seem to genuinely care about their restaurant. The woman who greeted us even brought a heater for my feet!

Went there today for lunch with a coworker and I was less than impressed. We both skipped the appetizer and went straight to getting a couple rolls each. I got the crispy spicy tuna and crispy spicy salmon, and he got the crispy spicy salmon and some shrimp roll. They were all equally sub par. The fish tasted too fishy, and the shrimp roll just wan't very good.

Warm and charming staff, warm atmosphere, sushi.......... could be better. I found that the rice was a tad under-done, but the chef is the best one to judge that. But the Hokkigai (surf clam), one of my favorite nigirisushi toppings, was terrible and tasted weeks old. The sweet potato roll i believe it was, was crunchy, and didnt have much flavor at all. However, it is very clean. I would go there again to see if it has improved, because I hope it has.

Mmmmmm... We experiemented and tried various different menu items during our visit and I'm so glad we did. I recommend you order a few items and share them together. Some of the items were very unknown to us and this helped us along our journey. Pot stickers, different teas, cooked sushi, chicken and beef dishes and don't forget desert! The staff is also very accomodating and friendly and its nicely located by all of the cute shops.

Sakura is a very clean and welcoming environment for dining. There sushi is top notch and they have both hot and cold saki. Their entrees are also very taste.
