Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Upon driving to the location, I was quite surprised to see a old Train station made into a Mexican Restaurant (of all things!). They had a lunch buffet going, but I had a coupon from Restaurant.com , so we decided to order from the menu. They have a nice LONG drink menu. Our Rainbow Margarita was the absolute best margarita I have ever tasted. Each color of the margarita was a different flavor! Mango, Strawberry, Pina Colada, Watermelon is what I tasted. It was very good, but not strong. I ordered the chicken (+shrimp) fajitas, how can that be bad...Well, the green peppers did not taste fresh. The shrimp were nice and big, but they tasted old and over cooked. The corn tortillas (i compare to El Rey's) were not as good as El rey. I wanted to try the chocolate cake but it was not on the menu...Overall, if I am in the area I would go for the drinks!

I enjoy going here for dinner. They have large portions, decent service and good margaritas. They also have a large menu with just about anything for even the pickiest eater. Their Sunday brunch is also very good and moderately priced. Because they have a lot of of seating available, you never really have to wait very long for a seat. I enjoy sitting outside in the summer, as long as the hornets aren't out- for whatever reason they love the outdoor seating here!

Favorite restaurant in Waukesha. Decent Mexican food and great service.
(4)Judith J.
Enjoyed the food, drinks, and atmosphere. Especially enjoyed the Caldo de Camarone (Shrimp Soup) made with vegetables, avocado with diced onions and cilantro on the side.
(4)Tom R.
The food is good authentic Mexican, the margarita's are great and seating in one of the train cars really makes for a fun overall experience.

Sunday brunch is a great deal with very decent food. Fresh made tortillas, omelets, and sauteed shrimp are served up with the rest of the all-you-can-eat brunch items. Regular menu items are a good representation of Mexican cuisine. Portions are just right. The steak chimichanga's are fantastic (steak not listed on the menu).

Our family went to La Estacion the other night and it was wonderful! Although the location isn't gorgeous, the style of the restaurant was very cute and enjoyable. The food was delicious, every one of us got something different, and we all enjoyed our meals greatly. The service was great and quick. They have a variety of food and it was great! Would definitely go back!
(4)Tony C.
During the summer, you can't beat the outdoor patio. The food is good, but it's not the best Mexican food in Waukesha. The atmosphere at this place is great, and I would recomend checking it out for that reason alone.

Everytime I come home to Milwaukee, I must stop at La Estacion. This is my favorite Mexican food ever-- I've been going since before it was in a fancy new location with the new name. (It used to me a hole in the wall named Taquiera Jalisco with about 10 total tables. Nobody there spoke English and the first time my dad took me there, I'll admit-- I was terrified). The margaritas and daquiris are heavenly. My go-to flavor is the peach daquiri, but trust me when I say-- you can't go wrong with any flavor. And they have a lot! Like any Mexican restaurant, the chips & salsa are free and keep coming. The chips are light and crisp, usually coming out warm. They give you two different salsas. One my dad fondly refers to as "baby food" is a salsa puree, and not very spicy. The other salsa has a bit of a kick to it, with fresh chunks of tomato and onion, with bits of jalepeno and cilantro for flavor. So good. I'm not kidding you when I say I get the same entree everytime. Since I was 16 and I first started coming, I haven't strayed away from my favorite dish. NOt even once. I get the Combinacion. This comes with all my favorites-- why would i need anything else? We've got the cheese enchilada-- very ooey gooey cheesey and covered with a red sauce and (what else?) more cheese. Next, a steak tostada-- crispy flat shell with layers of refried beans, sour cream, lettuce, steak, cheese, and a bit ot tomatoes. My favorte piece is the pork taco. It's served on a small corn tortilla, with perfectly seasoned pork, topped with onions and cilantro . I swear, it's HEAVEN. It's served with the usual rice & beans-- rice is nice and fluffy with random vegetables in it (corn, carrots, peas) and the beans are the way I think refried beans should be! They are thin, with lots of cheese on the top. My mouth is watering just thinking about them. Going to the Mil next week-- I'm sure it will include a stop to La Estacion.

Coming from downtown and moving to Waukesha I'm finding many places that just can't live up to the big city feel and atmosphere I appreciate....add this place to the list. The food is good and the drinks OK but I'm sorry...just not feeling that I love it...if you're a La Fuente or La Perla or Botanas fan you're likely to be underwhelmed.

A dreary Friday afternoon stop at La Estacion Restaurant in Waukesha was a much needed pick-me-up. Excellent lime margaritas on the rocks at the bar. Friendly efficient bartenders offered excellent service and good drinks. When our group of four had all arrived we were seated in one of the train car booths. We enjoyed that especially when a real train passed by...very close to the restaurant windows.. The place was busy with a nice mix of friends, families, groups of two or eight. Not one of us was disappointed with our entrees of chimichangas, chili rellenos, shrimp fajitas, and bistec con raja y queso. Depending upon what was ordered, we noticed Mexican authenticity was presented in the meal. Chimichangas and shrimp fajitas seemed more Americanized, while the other entrees were very similar to what we've enjoyed in Mexico. A couple of beers to go with the meals and we were very satisfied. The only glitch was a group of young moms with toddlers seated adjacent to the bar when we first arrived. The young kids ran around, screamed, cried, and had to be corraled by their moms numerous times. I am not saying they weren't entitled to running around the bar, but there might have been a better place to take kids under the age of three and still have a nice mom visit. We were at the bar from 4:30-6:00 and the moms and kids were there the entire time so they were not waiting for a table for dinner.

Love this place. Friendly staff, excellent food and prices! Keep up the good work!!
(4)S C.
One of the best Mexican restaurants in the area. The burritos and chimichanga are amazing. Love the Sunday brunch (The omelets are some of the best I have ever had.) The service is fast also which is nice. The only negative thing I can say is I am not a fan of their salsa. It hasn't stopped us from going back again and again though.

OK, so a friend of mine brought me here for lunch years ago. The giant cup of mexican hot chocolate with whipped cream stayed with me and I knew I'd have to come back. And I did, only this time I made the trek for Brunch! Oh man... First, there's a lady making the tortillas, yes you read that right. They are still all doughy before she places them on the grittle. Then we have the Guacamole station...need I say more? OK fine. There's fresh onions, sour cream, salsa, chopped cilantro, limes, tomatoes, OK gotta stop, making myself hungry and I'm way too far. The options are plentiful, tacos, eggs, waffles, bacon, sweets, and let's not forget a "bowl" of coffee or hot chocolate. **only 4 star, because no matter what I eat there, I'm always so sleepy afterwards and I still have to drive an hour back home. Ugh, what do they put in that food?
(4)Erica L.
Loves: flautas, tamales, margaritas, horchata! Dislikes: old, smelly ugly train car! I hate sitting in that thing! If it would get redecorated it wouldn't be so bad! Last time we sat in there I had a view out the window of a cement block wall!
(4)Andrea L.
La Estacion has a very unique atmosphere as it is a restaurant right in the middle of a train station, making an interesting place to dine. The interior is well decorated and there's a patio as well to enjoy when the weather's nice. The food is very American-Mexican and tastes like a glorified cafeteria. The flavors are really bland, especially the rice and beans. This is especially true for the lunch buffet on weekdays (which you should avoid)- the food is usually room temperature, but they did have alright dulce crepes. I got the vegetarian fajitas for $10, one of the cheaper things on the menu. There were a bunch of steamed vegetables and though it didn't taste like much, I appreciated that it was a healthy option. Probably not so healthy after I devoured the whole thing, but it's a give and take. My usual order is the carne asada (skirt steak) that comes with rice, beans, tortillas, lettuce, and a cheese empanada. If you're wondering why my rating is so low here's the killer: they charge EXTRA for hot sauce. Who does that?? For a Mexican joint, you can do much better. However it is still Mexican food so it's not like you have to force-feed it to yourself (as you can tell by the way I demolished all my food).
(2)Beth L.
Authentic Mexican food, great atmosphere. Wait staff are always very nice and efficient. The food is all amazing. The bar and drinks are amazing as well. This place has stayed consistently good for the 8 years I've been going there. One of my favorite restaurants of all time. Check it out during the summer months especially, the outdoor seating is nice.
(5)Tony S.
After a few experiences here I would say this is an over all good place for Mexican food. A sit down restaurant in down town Waukesha that makes you come back for the salsa. Staff is courteous and all around this is exactly what you would expect out of any Mexican restaurant. What makes it unique is that sometimes when they are really busy they will let you eat out on an old train car.
(3)Vern M.
I don't want to go on and on about the four meals that we had there but all I will say is that I don't know how this place is still in business. It had the worst Mexican food I've had in a long time. We won't be going back. The only positive I can say is that I liked the large tables in the rail car.
(1)David L.
Food was good. It doesn't look like much from the outside with the old rail cars, but the interior is well appointed. Will be back again, at least for as long as my son's gf is going to school nearby.
(4)Joe P.
Descriptive phrase: friendly, homey Mexican. You haven't spent much time in Waukesha if you haven't been to La Estacion. This re-purposed train depot is a comfortable and interesting place to grab some decent Mexican food, whether in the bar or the dining rooms or the attached train cars. Sunday night for dinner and the place was about half full. They did a good job handling our party of 8, and Jason was a friendly and quick server. Disappointed they were out of their Dos Equis Amber on draught, but the Negra Modelo ($3.75) was a good substitute. The free chips and two salsas were delicious, and Jason replenished them as soon as they were gone without us even asking. I try mole everywhere I go, so here I ordered the Pollo en Mole Poblano ($11.50). There were plenty of chicken pieces in a chocolatey and slightly tangy mole sauce, with sides of standard Mexican rice, creamy refried beans, and a lettuce/carrot mix. Served with flour tortillas. The entree was solid if unmemorable; not disappointed I ordered it but I'd try something else next time. Overall, though, I always have a good experience at La Estacion. The service, prices, selection, and ambiance certainly bumped this 3-star entree to a 4-star experience.
(4)Diane S.
I thought the food was good. Potions are large enough for two. I had the tostada dinner with three tostadas. My husband had shrimp Cameroon. Thought it was really good. I really liked the raspberry mojito
(4)Vilém Z.
Of all the Mexican food choices near downtown Waukesha, this spot is the best. Decent drink specials, quick and friendly service, well priced menu, and constantly good food. Their chips and salsa are just okay, as others have mentioned. I wouldn't say this is 100% authentic Mexican, but the quality and quantity of the food is excellent given the choices on the menu. They have patio seating out front in the warmer months. Year round they are accommodating to larger groups - but call ahead if you plan on bringing a group of 6 or more for dinner. The waiting area and bar in the front of the restaurant is small and can crowd quickly if you have to wait for a table.
(4)Coco L.
Ok food not that great. The lunch buffet is undet 10 bucks with a drink. The options are limited. Pass....

What a fun find, thank you Yelp for leading us here! We picked up my husband's grandfather in downtown Waukesha on a busy Friday night, and were able to walk right in at La Estacion. A well-rated Mexican fare, known for including nopales (pickled cactus) in the food, everything we tasted was full of flavor. While I could feel a night club, pick-up joint feeling starting to swell at the bar, we found quieter dining for family in the train cars, alongside some large group parties. I had the caldo de pollo, which is a slow-cooked vegetable chicken soup. Rice came on the side, as did tortillas, which I was not used to. The chicken was large chunks of cut up chicken, including the bone, so be prepared to pick over the meat a bit. Vegetables were beautifully cooked just past al dente. Our kids loved their lemonade and root beer choices, and I enjoyed the tequila selection, served with soda water instead of margarita mix to lighten things up. They had a beautiful looking tres leches (which they had Americanised to labeling as 'three milks") cake, though we had two of their version of sopapilla, which was not at all like the sopapillas I've had. They were softer puffed donut-sized fried tortilla bites, not a crispy fried tortilla as I've had in the past. Served with ice cream, whip, and a cherry. They were demolished by the kids and their great-grandpa, so they must have been okay.

I dined here with a group of people on a Thursday night and the restaurant was half packed. It is at the end of the downtown Waukesha area with a nice sized parking lot to say the least. Once the group of 5 was seated, our horrible waiter came to take our drink orders. I asked for the Patron Margarita and the waiter questioned my choice of tequila. For starters, I am not sure why he would question me since that was one of the drinks printed on the menu. I think it's best to leave the ordering to the diners instead of trying to make them feel like they are clueless when it comes to what they want to consume and not consume. 20 minutes later when our drink orders arrived, I was quite happy with the choice I had made. The margarita was wonderful. For my entrée, I ordered the Mahi Mahi Fish Tacos with rice and beans. The fish was dry and flavorless, even with the creamy sauce that accompanied it. The rice was good; however, I didn't enjoy the dry beans. Luckily, I had plans to share this meal along with the Shrimp Quesadillas. Thankfully, the quesadillas were a lot better. Overall, I enjoyed the shrimp quesadillas and the margarita, but I didn't enjoy the fish tacos or the slow service. It took a very long time to get our ticket, and when it finally was presented to us, the waiter also decided to give us a speech on how it was his first week at this particular restaurant and how much it meant to him that we came. We all knew that he was yearning for a higher tip, but a substantial tip needs to come with more than just a speech...it needs to come with great service. I doubt I would return.

I've eaten at La Estacion decades ago and they had decent food. I went for an early dinner with a friend of mine a couple of weeks ago and had the most horrible dining experience in a long time. There was nothing Mexican about the food: bland, tasteless, disgusting. Mediocre service, the poor kid asked us several times "good, isn't it?" as if he was trying to convince himself! I could go on but I won't waste my time on this establishment. Even Taco Bell is better!

This is my usual place for Mexican in the 'Sha. Favorites about this place include: 1. Large seating areas for groups, including the train cars. 2. Good happy hour, with drinks around $5. 3. Affordable pricing, especially for lunch. 4. Variety of menu selections. 5. Outdoor patio seating - woohoo! Not-so-favorites: 1. Inconsistency. For example - sometimes my chips taste stale, sometimes they're perfect. 2. Ordering a-la-carte can really add up here. I don't always want a huge dinner, but ordering a couple of small items can be just as pricey as said huge dinner. What gives? 3. Though most of the time my service is good, I'd had a couple of questionable experiences with extremely slow service. If I could go 3.5 here, I probably would. The good outweighs here; and for sit-down Mexican in Waukesha, it's one of my favorites.
(3)Eric S.
One of my favorite Mexican places everywhere. Not only do I love trains but I love the whole idea of the restaurant being in an old station and being repurposed. Then the food..Amazing. I never have had a bad meal or bad service here. Top notch.
(5)Jenni T.
I'm being nice by giving them 2 stars. My fiance, our son and myself recently went here for a Friday night dinner. We have been here many times and never had an issue but this time was different. We were seated on the train and it was so dirty. It smelled like garbage and you could tell no one has cleaned that area for a while. We sat down ordered our drinks and then 6 men in there early 20s were seated right behind us. They each ordered a pitcher of margarita and we not being appropriate at all for a family friendly restaurant. The hostess should have sat them closer to the bar area.
(2)Kari K.
We both liked it. I tried some new Mexican food. The atmosphere is cool it's set in a train station depot which is unique. The waitress was very friendly & informative. They serve late which is nice also. Told us about Sundays brunch they have we will have to check that out some day! The portions they give are decent size.
(5)John M.
Two words that will change yo lyfe: Cheesecake Burrito. You're welcome. When visiting I came here twice! I had to. The Sunday brunch is OUT OF THIS WORLD! I want to move to WI for La Estacion. Service ON POINT. Food OUTSTANDING. Decor SUPERB. Only issue I have at this point is I cannot give 6 stars!
(5)Dana S.
Very average food and prices went up - used to be one of our favorite places for many years :( Charged $1.25 extra for salsa and $4.00 extra for shrimp diced so small almost unrecognizable on taco salad. Fajitas had almost no seasoning - strange is all I can say???
(1)Suzan H.
Fast and friendly service. The food came out quick. The decor is cute. The food is decent. I had the burrito ranchero which was alright.
(3)Nadine N.
If I could give this place a zero I would. This place is dirty, outdated, and the food is nasty. Service is always slow. I can name a handful of better Mexican restaurants than this one... Conjietos, Jose's blue sombrero, LA fuente, even chili's carry's better Mexican food than this place!! Save your money!!
(1)Dan G.
Cons : waitress was new.. it happens. Ordering was a challenge. But getting past that I guess.. wrong food brought out for BOTH of us. Wrong information given to us and didn't know the difference between lager and amber dos equis.. again.. most issues were staffing. She's new.. it happens. But in her defense she was very nice. The only cons food wise.. Chile Rellano was just so so. Wasn't full of grease.. that's a plus. But otherwise.. too soft and just meh. Salsa that come with the COLD, yet homemade chips.. meh.. one is a slightly spicier version of tomato sauce and the other fresh but bland Pico DE gallo. Not impressed. On to the PROS: Green Verde sauce on my wife's enchiladas was excellent. Arbol sauce on mine (I asked for some heat) was incredible. Desserts - we had the crepes with caramel and tequila were fabulous (see picture). Reaching for 4 stars this visit.. but will probably earn 4 next time just from the food!
(3)Mike T.
Chips and salsa used to be good but lately the chips are like fretos and the salsa is nasty. This used to be one of the reasons I came here but it's different now. Place is sort of dirty and I've seen small fleas in the summertime. People are always nice but it's not a clean place. Stopped by for drinks this weekend and the doors were hanging open all night so the critters could come in. Not Cool!
(2)Mari L.
Yes!! I love when places like this exist. To take an old fashion train station and turn it into a restaurant is hands down the best way to grab my attention. First of all, the front patio is fantastic!! Lots of room so you don't feel like you are sitting on top of others. Plus, the building is very colorful and the flowers outside added so much life. It's a beautiful space. But, let's not stop there, there are also tables available on the old train cars. That simply made my heart happy. Such a fun experience!! The service was great and the waiters were attentive. It was nice that my water never got too low on such a warm day. The margaritas tasted delicious and the chips were fresh and not too salty. The menu was great but I was hoping for more combo plates. I like to mix things up a bit. I went with the chimichanga plate which included 3 small chimichangas, rice and beans. I was very pleased that beans weren't too greasy and the portions were perfect. This is officially one of the places I will be taking friends and family who are visiting from out of town. It's hard for me to leave the downtown area but this place is worth the drive.
(4)Kelsi B.
This place is my jam. Margaritas are delicious. Food is delicious (Enchiladas are my fave). Decor is fun and colorful. Service is great. Also you can't beat homemade salsa and fresh, hot tortilla chips at your table. If you're ever in the area and craving Mexican, make your way to this place!
(4)Rusty A.
Bland at best. My steak was like shaved roast beef intended for a sandwich rather than for a steak dinner. Forgot the chorizo in the quest appetizer. Check was off and high by 50%. Won't go back.
(1)Andrea H.
I really like the atmosphere and decor. he food is decent as well. I've been here quite a few times and have yet to be disapointed.
(4)Gina B.
I don't get it. I read the other reviews and have gotten input from friends and I guess I either have a vastly different opinion of things or we had just an off night but I was not impressed with La Estacion. Sorry folks. Really liked the concept and the decor with the train station and such but the service and the food was not impressive at all. We were seated at a rickety table that we had to fix ourselves so it didn't rock back and forth and had to wait for 10 minutes for a waiter to come by and first take our drink order. He walked by 6 times before he ever stopped for the first time. Food came out super quick, like within minutes and there's a reason why. All the food we had seemed as if it was precooked and slapped together on a plate for service - nothing was made fresh for the order. Salsa was basically tomato puree with some onions and peppers in it. - Yuk! There were no water refills and no drink refills offered. Never came back to see how everything was. Fast food at it's finest I guess. My husband loves Mexican food far more than myself and he didn't like anything about the experience either and really did not care for the food. So I left unsatisfied and perplexed as to what I was missing that everyone else raved about. Unfortunately I will never know because I do not have the hankering to ever return.
(2)Brett S.
First of all, I'd say that all the people talking about their awesome Mexican food probably only have Taco Bell to compare. I ordered the Enchiladas De Mole Poblano Con Pollo and was a bit confused when the waitress asked what kind of meat I wanted in it. I was under the impression that pollo meant chicken (and the menu agreed). But no big deal. They immediately brought out chips and two types of 'salsa'. At least I think it was salsa. One was fairly good but the mild version was the 'tomato purée' that others have experienced. Nearly no taste in it at all. We mixed the two together to get something to tide us over until the food arrived, which wasn't too long. I'm not picky about Mexican food but my date and I both agreed the food was 'just ok'. A bit bland. Not at all spicy. Overall the place is ok. One nice thing is that it's very reasonably priced. Two dinners and 4 margaritas came out to just over $40. Usually that's what the drinks alone would cost. I give the place 4 stars for the atmosphere, 3.5 stars for the service and 3 stars for the food. I might be tempted to go back and try something different, but with all the restaurants that are on my 'must check out' list, it probably won't happen soon.
(3)Ralph H.
I like the place for the atmosphere but the food is mediocre. It is one of the most popular places to eat in the area but I think it goes back to the atmosphere beings as though its set in a historic train station kinda cool. Service is a hit or miss usually it is pretty good.
(2)Cory W.
If you like the food at this place, clearly you have no idea what good Mexican food should taste like. Good Mexican food is all about the quality of the the ingredients, freshness is a must. Clearly all of the food coming out of this kitchen comes in a box, can, or vacuum sealed bag. One of the menu descriptions highlighted ketchup as a key ingredient. There is a Taco Johns not too far from here that I'm sure offers better food. Otherwise take a 30min drive into Milwaukee and enjoy several restaurants that do Mexican cuisine justice. I liked the outside appearance of the restaurant, but that's about it. Don't waste your time or your money.

My wife is of Scotch-Irish-German-Romanian descent. I am a full-blooded Korean. We celebrated our wedding by holding our reception in a train car. With GLORIOUS MEXICAN FOOD courtesy of a man named Eduardo. Are you confused yet? Because so was I. No matter -- this place is awesome! How much do I love this place? Let me count the ways. When we first came to see if this, indeed, would be the place that we'd hold our wedding reception, Eduardo guided us around the restaurant like the sumptuous Latin-American lover that he most undoubtedly is. We felt cared for and, indeed, loved in his hands. Then the food -- the samples he was giving us were more like full servings, as if he were trying to inundate us with an interminable flood of quality food! The burritos were finger-licking good, and of great girth. The taco bar was amazing: full of finesse and juicy, spicy vigor. And the chimichangas ... oh ... when those luscious shafts of (deep-fried) dark (chicken) meat entered our mouths they ejaculated flavor all over us, filling us with joy everlasting. I'm not joking. The good: read the above paragraph and you tell me. Oh, also, the prices are very reasonable; we paid much less for our wedding reception than we would have at any other place [and we'd have had mediocre beef/chicken/vegetable options, instead of the MEXUAL HEALING (MEXUAL~!) we received here]. The bad: we don't live in the area anymore, meaning that we haven't been back in over a year. The handsome: now, whenever my wife and I think of Mexican food, we always think of Eduardo. The ugly: the kind of addiction this restaurant engenders.
(5)Brian W.
Very good Authentic Mexican! Friendly staff and the queso blanco was very good- I would recommend.
(4)Elizabeth K.
This was the best Sunday brunch that have ever had. There was literally something for everyone, including 4 picky kids. We sat in one of the train cars and the kids loved it. Staff was super friendly and great with kids. Will definitely be back.
(5)Stephanie M.
I had a taco salad with chicken and it was amazing! Many times when I go to Mexican restaurants, the food tastes like it came right out of a can, but that wasn't the case here at all. I was very impressed. And the patio is great if you go on a nice day!
(5)Ashley W.
Sunday Brunch is AMAZING! I visited for the first time 5 years ago.. and it hasn't changed since. Consistantly delicious. Fresh juices, made to order stations (omletes, crepes, pastas, etc), rice, potatoes, various entree options, BIG dessert table. Reasonably priced. I definetly recommend it to anyone who appreciates authentic cuisine!
(5)Emily P.
Some of the best Mexican food around! Great atmosphere and delicious drinks!

I re-visited La Estacion with my siblings for our first-ever grown-up dinner without our spouses or our parents around. I was playing "host" in my area, and they all came from out of town. Unfortunately two of them got lost trying to find the restaurant, mainly because 164 was closed unexpectedly. We all had some trouble parking because it was so busy, as well. I had made a reservation and requested a quiet-er area (I knew the main hall would be loud), so we could talk. The hostess who took my reservation was very accommodating and sure enough, we were seated in the train cars. We were also seated quickly despite the massive crowds there that night. Our server took our drink order quickly, and was very prompt and attentive. Our food took a little while to come out, and when it did there had been a mix-up with chimichangas vs fajitas (just grabbed the wrong plate I'm guessing), but that was fixed. Then they accidentally brought out a chopped steak platter instead of the steak and cactus my older brother ordered. He couldn't tell, though, so he started eating it and loved it... until they came back for it. :( Kinda bummed he didn't get to keep it, and they never brought his guacamole that he was supposed to get (my younger brother gave him his from his fajitas). My sister and I had the combinacion platter #1, no complaints there. The drinks were good and everything is reasonably priced, as always. The food was fine - though I'm not sure anyone wanted to write home about it. We had a nice time relaxing and taking our time with eating. We even had some coffee and shared a fried ice cream, which was awesome. Overall, a nice visit - over too quickly (how did 10:00 come so soon??) but that's what great company will do for you!

La Estacion was recommended to us and we were not disappointed. What a terrific authentic Mexican restaurant!! The decor, service and most importantly the food were first class!! Super fresh ingrediants, and very generous portions, who could ask for more! An extensive menu to cater for all palets, including a number of vegetarian dishes. Excellet!! We sat in the restaurant the carriages were available for our late lunch, no porblem have eaten in converted railway carriages before. I doubt you will be disapointed if you have never been.

A solid place for American Mexican. The food is decent, we ordered the guacamole appetizer, vegetarian tostada plate and enchilada suizas with steak. The margaritas were great! Service was attentive and well paced. There is a nice outdoor patio area but the interior could use a little TLC. However, the old train station has a nice ambience. The only negative: when we first entered, for some reason the hostess thought it would be funny to tell us there was a 45 minute wait for a table. As we were heading back out the door, she chased us down, laughing, saying she was just kidding. Not sure why she thought it would be funny to turn people away.

Since I am currently the Duchess, I should probably leave some kind words. The patio is perfect in the summer while sipping one of the wonderful fresh mojito creations. Chips and salsa hit the spot with the warm homemade chips. I haven't had anything here that I didn't like. But if you don't like tight space, don't sit in the train car and if you are hard of hearing, don't sit in the balcony upstairs as all the dining room feeds right up there. The bartenders muddle the drink ingredients well and the food is excellent. Waukesha has stiff competition for Mexican food and this place is at the top for me.

The staff was nice but the food was mediocre. I has the fish tacos which were bland and not good, but my bf liked his meal of pork and cactus tacos. We also didn't get to eat on a train which was the real reason we went there.

Drove a half hour to check this place out for brunch. What a disappointment. The food was god-awful, the dining area was filthy and quite chilly. To be honest, it's a dump. Not to mention our server throwing a tantrum as we walked toward the door after paying her up at the front counter because she thought we didn't leave a tip. So inappropriate and unprofessional. The tip was left on the table--we were in a big hurry to get out of there and are currently on our way to get some quality food. What a joke. Don't waste your time.

If the Polar Express crashed into a Mexican city, I believe it would look exactly like this. Great, unique atmosphere, as you can dine in old-fashioned train cars. In this area, this atmosphere is a unique fresh breath of air. Makes me feel like I've traveled outside of the Milwaukee area. :) The food was also fabulous and comparable to bigger city Mexican foods. I ordered a combination plater with a chicken taco, cheese enchalada and beef tostado. So good and only $10! I had enough leftover for my next day dinner. Plus unlimited chips and salsa. I tasted off my bf's plate of steak fajitas and guac which was amazingly seasoned. For four folks plus a pitcher of lime/raspberry frozen margs, the bill was under $70! I will be back.

Had a delicious anniversary dinner. I really liked that they accommodated my 1 year old daughter too with tacos and french fries. I had the 1st thing on the menu - steak and it was delicious. My husband had the chimis and he really liked them. The margaritas were strong and good. The sopapillas were pretty good - not piping hot fresh but I guess that was better with our daughter along. I give it 4 stars for the clearly packaged salad that adorned the meals and the fairly bland rice. (Although, i much prefer the beans to rice and the beans were pretty good.) The guac that came with my meal was good as well. It was nice to sit outside too.

The food is great but the restaurant (particularly the train seats) could be fixed up a bit. If you are seated outside in the summer, this place is great!

(oh my god) soooooo gooooooood. My ma ordered the enchilada with mole: if you like mole GET THIS. I had the tostadas, which were *the best*. Also they have good wines. Check it. We were put in the train car with like three crying babies (did they think my mom and I were going to be a nuisance? I mean c'mon). That was weird but who cares, I'm all about the food here. Pretty authentic!

We love this place- great drinks, cool decor and yummy food. I love love love their fried ice cream the trip out here is worth it just for that !

Always one of my favorites, good food, drinks and service. Fair prices. Good variety on their menu. We have not tried their Sunday Brunch yet but have heard good things. I'm getting hungry!!! Yummy!!!

Came here for an engagement party, had the most rude waiter I have ever seen, had, or heard of . I was with a party of 20 people, and some were late. Right after they sat us, which in the beginning there was only four on time, he asked if we could have them hurry up because he has other tables and didn't want to have to worry about coming back to check on people. As people started to come a different person came and took drink orders, with the question, "hey you want a drink?". No manners at all. As more people showed, and we were able to order food, the first person who's order he took went this was... " Can I have a Marita? ". " Oh I'm taking food orders now... " if I'm not mistaken waiters work off of tips. As he worked his way around the room my wife asked for three enchiladas a-la-cart which was $3.25 each. His response oh it's cheaper to order the dinner (which was $11). How is that if $3.25 x 3= $9.75? Then he proceeded to argue that she was wrong about it. Come on side just give her what she wants to order. Food was nothing worth boasting about, same as my first review on this place. So horribly rude service met with food that's not worth the money is why this is a one star review.

Overall, the food here is pretty average. Your typical burritos, tacos, enchiladas, etc. I've never been disappointed but can't say I've been blown away either. What's really cool about this place is that it's in an old train station (thus the name) and they have tables in some of the old train cars too. Extra star for charm!

Atmosphere: kitschy classic American Mexican restaurant. I also felt as though the tables and chairs were in serious need of a scrub down. Service: Pleasant, but really had to pull his teeth to refill water, so to speak. Chips and salsa: okay. One spicy salsa (chunky) and one mild (smooth) salsa that tasted like ketchup. Margaritas: most popular flavors are pre-mixed and our table agreed that no alcohol could be detected - we even asked the server but he assured us that there was booze in there. Next round? Went to guava flavor- which is not pre-made, and then you could taste the tequila. Food: Well, after the aforementioned 2 margaritas, pretty good stuff. I had the cheese enchiladas. Overall good flavor. Did not love the refried beans. The enchiladas seemed small, but I did end up being full. Overall a 3 star place. The train concept is awesome, but they fall short on cleanliness, water refills, and cliche decor.

Great place. Fast service. Tasty food at unbelievable prices. Highest recommendation for everyday Mexican.
(4)Adam M.
This isn't just the best Mexican restaurant in the area; it's the best restaurant. From the atmosphere, to the service, to the food, to the margaritas - everything is top notch. The prices are good too. Can't recommend this place enough.
(5)Tony F.
Its middle of the road mexican food. Its a nice atmosphere and the staff do a good job.
(3)Tanya V.
I really don't understand what people see in this place. The restaurant is always busy and people seem to give the place good ratings, but the food is just so obviously cheap, low-quality and kind of tasteless. Drinks are cheap and low-quality, and even the chips and salsa are blah. The place seems a little dirty and not very well-taken care of. Not a fan, and I will never go here again if I don't have to.

La Estacion is hands down my most favorite restaurant for Mexican fare. The food is always fresh, fast and fabulous. We went for a weekday lunch and discovered they have a lunch buffet for $8. The buffet selection is smaller than their Sunday brunch but wonderful no less. They had their strawberry field green salad with goat cheese that I love so much. The hot foods included a chicken soup, mexican pizza, chicken quesadillas, chicken enchiladas, beef and catcus, rice and beans. The dessert was a sweet carmel goat milk cake with light creamed frosting topped with nuts...at first I thought is was a light southern pecan cake. It was ultra sweet and very moist. Their desserts have never dissapointed me. I absolutely love their better than sex chocolate cake.

I have been going to La Estacion for many years now, and I have to say, I have never had a bad experience there! It is the best Mexican-American restaurant that I have ever been! Great atmosphere, cute decorations, clean, and most important, AMAZING FOOD and drinks! Make sure you try their Guava margaritas (Blended, not on the rocks), as well as their beff Chimichangas!! You will get your money's worth of food and drinks! Trust me!

So I remember going up in Waukesha and going dinner here when it was the Depot restaurant. We were seated in a room (just big enough for the table) that they called the coal bunker; it actually was the place where coal was stored when this was a working train station. We sat for 30 minutes after they took our drink order only to have a waitress apologize for forgetting about us. Flash forward about 20 years, New Year's Eve, I attended a dinner party in one of the passenger cars, it was like eating in a hall way with windows so I don't think I would recommend the party train car if you enjoy socializing during dinner. Flash forward another 20 years and it is now a Mexican restaurant with a very nice outdoor dining area (until some smokers showed up) and pleasant staff.I had (3) Sopes with Mexican sausage (chorizo), my wife had vegetarian fajitas, and my mother had a tostada dinner with steak. So even with my daughters "kids" meal and drinks (I had a pink sangria that I was not impressed with but then again I am a bit of a sangria snob) dinner for 3 1/2 was less than $50 (before tip). I had Sopes at El Beso in Greenfield and they was horrible, dry, tuff, and chorizo that had less flavor than a McDonalds hamburger, oh and not to mention the guy at the table next to use found a Band-Aid in his food that almost made me puke. The Sopes at La Estacion were light and fluffy, and chorizo that had enough kick to satisfy a fire eater but not so much to ignite they light weights. My wife commented that she has not seen fajita prices this low anywhere and how large the plate was. I am thinking Mexican breakfast next time we are out in Waukesha, definitely not on the wrong side of the tracks here.

After numerous recommendations from people at work the girl and I finally headed over here last week for dinner. It was phenomenal. She is allergic to avocados, but I love guac and theirs was spot-on. A little spicy and a lot chunky, I really loved it. I had the menudo, which is one of my all time favorite things in the world and a few tacos and thought both were very good. She, not being very adventurous, had a bean burrito that ended up being as big as her head. Fried ice cream for desert, I must say, was only so-so. It was crusted in what seemed to be corn-flakes and was just too big a scoop to be done right. The inside was rock hard. It was still good, but not as good as it could have been. Maybe my hopes were just too high because everyone said the fried ice cream was so good. We loved the decor, some of the art on the walls is really very cool and the whole place has a neat vibe. Service was great, drinks were never even close to empty and our special requests were handled with aplomb. Will got back without hesitation.

I've been here a couple times and haven't been impressed either time. The horchata is good, but the food was lacking in flavor.

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the United States. The fact this is located in Waukesha Wisconsin only makes it better. Now, I like everything about the place, but it is the MOLE that I love. This dish if served at a fine, cleaned up of course, would cost 5 times as much and still be the most popular item on the menu. The prices are very low for the quality of the food and service. GO.

I have tried some excellent restaurants in Mexico wile living there, from northern Mexico "Cabrito" to the Yucatan peninsula "Huachinango al mojo de ajo" . This place have some very good dishes! It also has American cuisine items in the menu to please the less adventurous customers. They have hand made tortillas which is a great plus for any Mexican restaurants. They have a great variety of items, more than I have seen in similar restaurants. The shrimp plates on the brunch are plain and simple amazing! The drinks are also great!

I have always had a great meal at La Estacion. Their margaritas are excellent - and I love that you can combine flavors. I recommend the strawberry mango. On my last visit I got the taco dinner with one chicken taco, one ground beef, and one shredded beef. Each one was excellent, but if I had to rate them, I liked the ground beef the best, followed by the chicken, and then the shredded beef. They also have great fried ice cream. I also love the atmosphere at La Estacion. Definitely ask to eat in the train car. It's an experience you can't get at any other Mexican restaurant!
(5)Scott S.
If you love spicy food, the Lomo De Res En Chile De Arbol is awesome. It might be the spiciest thing they serve, so beware. We were sat in the train, which was a bit dark and gloomy, but the service and food was great.

I love this place, especially in the summer when the patio's open. Quick lunchtime service, friendly servers, and great lunch specials. It's a nice unexpected gem in Waukesha. I've only had lunch here, but based on good experiences, I'd definitely come for dinner sometime.

Excellent food, service, and ambiance. Yelp does it again! We went to La Estacion based on reviews here, and they were right on. I had the house specialty, and it was delicious. My only complaint is there was too much food. One of my friends had the tamales, and loved them. The other had a shrimp dish, equally good. It's open, airy, maybe a bit noisy, but we were able to carry on a conversation without shouting. The server was a pleasure - prompt, quick, polite, friendly, and a little bit playful. The value was great - we had a guacamole appetizer and three main courses, all for under $50.

I have been here several times with my wife and family. Food has been top notch, but I can not say the same for the customer service. The servers look a little disoriented and have a hard time remembering what you ordered. What spoiled the overall experience is the fact that the portion size for carry out was smaller then the one for dine in. In the end this is still the best Latin flavor in Waukesha. Would recommend if you are out of town and you are craving some good food. Must try the nachos they have 6 choices of meat for them ....mmmmm....
(4)Jess M.
Still my down-home favorite. Not a fan of their shrimp soup, but it is a hearty one. Two kinds of very delicious salsa immediately at the table, authentic cuisine made spicier upon most requests, fan-tast-tic prices, perfect patio for sunset summertime margarita drinking, and a waitstaff that bends over backwards to get you what you're after. Take a date to eat in the train cars (--yes, I said train cars to be seated in, two of them with high-backed booths for privacy) or seasonally take them for the patio seating. Good big strong margaritas, good flavorful menu, huge variety of items AND a massive sunday brunch. Cant go wrong :)

I like this place well enough, but I still remember when this joint was a few blocks away and called jalisco's. As a bartender back in the day, this was one of our favorite places to hit up after work. They had great burritos suizos, and when you get you chips and salsa, ask for salsa diablo, spicy, yet a nice spice, flavorful, not just burny. I do like the use of the old train cars for their seating, and the service was always very friendly, I have just had so many opportunities since this place and experienced much better Mexican cuisine.

Best in the Waukesha area.

Decent mexican food. Nothing spectacular, reasonable prices. If you go, pay attention to the painted cracks in the walls from a distance.

I've spent my life searching for the best Mexican restaurant. La Estacion isn't it, but it is DAMN good. What draws my attention is the variety, authenticity and uniqueness. The menu is huge, peppered with classics and some lesser known items. Lengua de Reys in Ranchero sauce is very spicy cow tongue. This is the only restaurant I have found serving Agua de Horchada, and it is a delicious cinammon infused rice milk. Their version of Chili Relleno is very well done. My favorite dish is the Enchiladas de Mole con Pollo. I have found only one other place that serves a mole anywher near as good as La Estacion's, and that is the Red Iguana in Salt Lake City. Fine company. Tres Leches cake is tasty, and the fully stocked dessert case should appeal to most. On the down side, the historic Railway depot housing the restaurant (while cleverly painted and a nice ambience) is almost always too cold and too loud. (Ask for a seat on one of the train cars). Also, the salsas are a weak accompaniment to the fresh chips. I regularly ask for the hot salsa, and though it is a step up from the bland salsa and pedestrian Pico de Gallo, it is blazing Habanero hot with very little other character. I regularly return to La Estacion and will continue to do so.

I was shocked to see solid reviews for this restaurant. This place was so terrible I felt compelled to write a review, something I have not done before. The atmosphere outside was good that's it. The service was ok. I ordered fish tacos advertised as Mahi Mahi. The tortillas contained deep fried little fish sticks likely not Mahi Mahi. I've never seen deep fried fish sticks in fish tacos. The cabbage and sauce was inedible. The entire meal was garbage. I tried some my friends plates, I could not eat mine, and it was bland. Our party did not finish meals and did not take home left overs. This place has terrible Mexican food. I can't believe it has some strong reviews. A chain restaurant like Chi Chi's or Taco Bell is better. Save your wallet and head into Milwaukee for some authentic mexican. In fairness I remember the chips and salsa being pretty good, but not even the salsa could help the fish tacos. Save your money and limit your purchase to alcohol, chips and salsa. Petey Chicago

Friends and I came in at about 5:30 Saturday night for dinner at La Estacion. We were seated immediately and greeted with chips and the two salsas. Drinks came right away and our waiter was attentive without being pushy. We ordered the guacamole appetizer but it was not as chunky as I would have liked. Very little added in the way of the traditional cilantro, onions and tomatoes. That was about the only disappointing part of our meal as when the entrees arrived our plates were full of food with a substantial amount of beef on our carne asada plates. The beans and rice were very good and the cheese enchilada was buried under the large slab of beef! Very tasty and the service was great. Would definitely go again next time we are in the area.
