I would probably go 3.5 if I could. The place is nice. It is a bar with food. The food is international and fusion-y. The owner is present and walks the rooms seeming to want to meet everyone and answer any questions and explain menu items. He does a good job at that. The drinks were very pricey, like downtown Chicago pricey, but they were impeccably prepared and served. The choices of liquors was impressive too. The menu held much promise but in the end the food was just OK. Nothing jumped off the plate with flavors or spices. I got the feeling it was going to really be a fun bite, but wound up falling flat. We ordered four different apps and five different meals. The Momo appetizers were dry. The 5 spice ribs dish we had was probably the best, the lamb the worst. Some in our party thought their meals were good, the ones I tasted were just OK. In the end, we all had a great time together and were treated to some great drinks and service. I am good with the 4 star rating though because this feels like a work in process. That and the effort put in to the place makes me have hope.

I came here with a few colleagues for work and we all were very happy with what we had. Everything tasted great, everyone was friendly. We let the waiter kind of drive a it since there are so many ways to have things. I can't wait to go back and try more stuff. I think this place will be around for a while and I plan to stop in for lunch since they will now be open for it! Yummy!

I've been here twice now- once with girlfriends and once with my parents. Both times, service was very attentive and professional, which I appreciate. They knew the menu and how to explain the various items--especially all those delish sauces that I love so much. The atmosphere was cozy and facilitated good conversation and I liked that the owner was hands on and attentive to his customers as well. On my first visit, it was my friend's birthday and they brought out a basket of various Nepalese bracelets for her to choose from after our dinner. How unique and thoughtful! I loved that. (We still we're fatties and got dessert though like the good girls we are) My only real qualm and why it is not 5 stars, is based on the pricing for the dish sizes. The tidbits are definitely named tidbits for a reason. Very small and almost awkward to share among 3 people, even though we ordered 4 of them. (again, thank goddess for dessert) I loved their $15 bottle of wine night Monday as well as their Monday MoMo deal with 10 momos- OOUUU they are the best- just get them- whether its Monday or not. I enjoyed them baked so they are a healthier choice than fried but still more crispy than boiled. (Love the 3 choices though!) All in all, I grew up in Theinsville-Mequon and the towns have desperately been needing some cool, innovative spots such as this with atmosphere and menu options that entice. Now go get some momos Northshore!

Excellent food and drink choices. Luxardo Old Fashioneds. Dynah is a fun, knowledgeable, helpful waitress. We will definitely be back!

We've been back a handful of times since the first visit. I'd say things have even gotten better. Portions seems a bit larger and there are more large plate options/specials. The flavor profiles continue to be spot on. Spicy is spicy. Garlicky is garlicky. Herby is herby. I hate going to places where flavors are dumbed down for a less than discerning crowd. To be fair, I'm not a fan of the momos. The wrappers lack substance. Don't want them doughy, but there should be more to them, especially if they are a signature item. Jesse and Barkha are wonder people and restaunteuers. I appreciate the attention they give to their patrons and the pride in what they serve!

I really wanted to like The Cheel, with its unusual menu and charming old building. The owner is even out working the tables, explaining the foods and making recommendations. But, man, were we underwhelmed. The flavors are interesting but not nearly amazing enough to justify the premium prices. Even the owner-recommended meal and sides were good but not all that great. Also, the atmosphere of the place is much more like a gastropub than an elegant restaurant, with the bar the focus of the dining area. In fact, there's a lot of effort to push the $10-15 specialty drinks on you. Which means that non-drinkers who are just there for the food -- like my wife and me -- are pretty much forgotten and once a couple of tables of drinkers arrives. Definitely won't be back. Sorry.

Nestled inside a Victorian building in downtown Thiensville is a restaurant that fuses traditional Nepalese, the Rockies and of course, love, in all of their dishes. Share a variety of small plates enjoying dishes like one of my favorites, momos; crispy dumplings dipped in homemade sauces called aachars. I prefer mine spicy, but try them all and discover your favorite. Try a veggie or pork choyla served over flattened rice crisped to perfection. Whether or not you grew up in the Himalayas, you will feel at home at The Cheel and it is home cooking at its best.

Took my wife for her birthday. The food was fantastic! Now we know are sure why the parking lot is overflowing daily. The ribs were great, the chefs salad awesome. Good selection of beers and wines.

No wonder the food is terrible. Cant blame the chef...just read that he's born and raised in WI. He's just guessing what Nepalese food should taste like.

Not impressed at all. Very small portions, horrible service, expensive. $40 for lunch (no alcohol) and left hungry. Were out of key items. Descriptions on menu sound 1000 times better than reality. Won't be back.

A taste of Napal here in Thiensville. My wife and watched as this restaurant rose from the previous businesses ashes. The food was delightful and tbe ambience was bright, clean and invited conversation. The service was attentive if not yet well polished. The owners greeted us and gave us a history of the restaurant and the family recipes that resulted in Cheel. We hade 2 of the small plates and an order of the Himalayian 5 spice rubbed baby back ribs. The ribs were remarkable, so tender the meat nearly fell off the bone. The spices were well balanced and deliciously forward. The first smaller plate was the beef momo, a fried (or steamed) dumpling. There were 5 dumplings to the serving, and we chose the Kenema dipping sauce. This sauce was deliciously spicy with a flavor profile unique in this area. The dumplings were tender and the beef filling was well seasoned and flavkrful. The second plate was the Pork Choya. This cold dish was served in a small bowl, layered starting with crunchy flattened rice, garlic, ginger, cilantro, and olive oil, tossed with the shredded grilled pork. The textures were very interesting, and the flavors unique. Finally, were offered a house made cheese cake with a blueberry and huckleberry compote. The cheesecake was outstanding! Very light anf fluffy and not too sweet. The fruit tasted fresh and delicious. The owners told us today's menu is only the start. Their chef will be building the menu as the customer's tastes become more well known. We were assured that,The Cheel's, food will be true to the families recipes and the flavors from their Himalayian home.

The food was amazing, but the service was subpar. The cobbler came out cold, and the server didn't know it was supposed to be hot. My drink refill was disregarded because the server saw one on the tab already, and thought another employee had already brought it out to me (the one already on the tab was, obviously, the one I had already finished and the reason I ordered another). If the staff was properly trained, I would give 4.5 stars since the food was outstanding.

Our first visit to this lively new restaurant in Thiensville. Sat. Night place was packed. We were walk-ins which meant we waited much longer than we expected. We were pleasantly surprised at all the various age groups. The owners were attentive and Jesse apologized a couple times for the wait. He made a point of coming back to explain about the wait. Once we were seated Barkha introduced herself and explained the various options. Nice. My husband had the soup special which he said was flavorful with oodles of noodles and lots of beef. I had the house salad. Fresh, fresh, fresh! Great dressing! Not skimpy on ingredients. Next, he had the barbecued ribs--fell off the bone, rice done to perfection and the cauliflower sooo delicious. I had the anda bara- lentil patties with quail eggs and aachar (mild) dipping sauce. Unusual for me, but I liked it.. Although the aachar still had too much kick for me. Can't wait till we can sit out on their deck and enjoy this welcomed new addition to the neighborhood. We'll be back.

I was excited for a new restaurant in the area. Only to find that the place had excellent tasting food but the portions were too small for the price. Its bad when you leave a restaurant hungry and have to go across the street to eat a fish fry! I hope they get the message quick that they need to increase serving size and entree selections because the place is cute, quaint and clean with a nice outdoor area.

It was my husband's idea to go to The Cheel after our son's soccer game. It was our first visit since the new ownership. We were impressed with the makeover of the place -very warm and inviting. The added patio is great to enjoy in a beautiful summer night. The menu is very unique with vegetarian and gluten free offerings. I had the Fing and I loved it: light, fresh, exotic, flavorful with a nice balance of fresh herbs and spices. My husband had 2 of the small plates, my son had chicken with veggies and blueberry lassi. Both of them liked their food very much. We were greeted warmly by the owners Barkha and Jesse, a beautiful young couple. The service was very good. What makes their place different is the love that is behind each recipe, the attention to detail and the quality of the ingredients used. I didn't find the prices to be unreasonable or the portions small. (As mentioned in some other reviews). We have to define our food dinner choices not by the size of the dinner plates but by the quality, freshness and nutritional value of the dishes. We had a great satisfying dinner with drinks for three people for $64. We left the place happy and energized. We will be back soon to try more of the delicious creations of Barkha and Jesse at The Cheel.

I enjoy reading other's reviews before and after trying a spot, especially a unique one. There were more reviewers on the plus side of things versus the contrary. I am with the majority. I thought the Cheel was even keel, warm and inviting, quaint and far from ostentatious. The food speaks for itself. Each dish delivered a world of exotic spices and deep flavor. I dine out. A lot. I am happy to report that the Cheel has brought a special culinary perspective to Thiensville and the metro Milwaukee area. Their dishes are well worth the trip. I don't think this hot spot is going for gastropub, and I don't think the atmosphere exudes that feel at all. In fact, I get more of a cozy, "neighborhood gem" vibe that is seeping old world flair. Thiensville and the surrounding 'burbs could use more haunts like this restaurant. The bartenders are serving up some mighty well-executed cocktails in their Sazerac and Old Fashioned. Much like the Cheel's food, the drinks have layers of flavors that make each taste more exciting. You find that each ingredient, spice, dish or drink has a new dimension after you have one, two, and three tastes. We started the evening with a craft cocktail at the bar and a mere 20-minute wait. The meal started with the special tidbit of pork belly samosas with the creamy aachar. I recommend you try our second starter of lamb bites. There were so many wonderful ingredients playing with the tastebuds, from ginger to peanuts to parmesan. It was a great combination of sweet and salty. The side of dal with my "bigbit" was delicious with hints of warm ginger. The saffron basmati rice was simple, but it was the right neutralizing grain for the sweet paneer tarkari. The tarkari had deep flavors thanks to the infusion of cardamom, cumin and coriander in the sauce. Every restaurant could benefit from multi-dimensional offerings like what you will find on the Cheel's menu. Petite appeal and plenty of creative plates are just two of the things that warrant my return. 'Return' will likely be plural.

I need to get this out into Yelp world. One star reviews should be given few and far between (Also, don't create an account just to give a one star rating, ya dick.) I realize that one star establishments exist, I just have a very hard time believing that a restaurant that was voted top five best new restaurant in Milwaukee should be receiving one. OK, stepping off my soapbox now... Finally! A successful restaurant to go in this location! It has the whole package: food, atmosphere and service. We ordered the lamb momo and an eggplant dip (was a special that night) as appetizers. Wow-za. So good! The eggplant dip came with these crispy, crunchy chips that were delicious. We had extra chips so the waitress brought over more aachar for us to try. The tamarind and the BBQ were our favorites. I was impressed with their craft cocktail menu and pleasantly surprised to see that Aviation was listed. I ordered the lamb chop special which was tender, juicy and plentiful! Yum. My friend ordered the signature sandwich, which was flavorful and hearty. The staff was attentive and helpful in answering any questions we had. The owners even stopped by our table to see how everything was. We stayed after dinner to listen to the live music, which is something that is few and far between in the Mequon/Thiensville area. The cheel is a welcome addition to the area and I look forward to many more meals there!

Sorry to say this but it was awful. We went for drinks and apps. They tasted like they were from the frozen section of a super market. Our service was a joke. We felt like we on a hidden camera that's how bad she was. I hate bashing a new place but they need a lot of improvement. I wouldn't even star this but yelp makes you.

Fabulous!!! Service was great. Food was a delight to every sense. Four of us for tidbits and desserts. Shared all. Owners were attentive and informative. What a great addition to Thiensville, Mequon. Oz County and the greater Milwaukee area.

Really great addition to Mequon/Thiensville area. Very unique experience, with a terrific balance of amazing flavors, spot on service, dedicated owners and tasty drinks. It is a bit on the pricey side, yes, however I am a big believer that you get what you pay for. This is not the Cheesecake Factory where quantity rules quality. Our group sampled all of the tidbits and a few bigbits and we just truly loved mixing and matching aachars (sauces), sharing, and experiencing the magic of this one of a kind restaurant. We are all foodies with palates that crave deep flavors, and were not disappointed. Can't wait to return!

Excellent addition to the area. The food was great, the service fabulous and the owner was accessible to run out with an umbrella to escort patrons comfortably into the building while it was raining. Got really busy at 6:30 with plenty of help.

Very unique and creative menu. Saw photos of the lamb burger that I will have to come back and try one day! Great little place with great owners. Can't wait to give it a try again...

Tonight we went to dinner at Cheel to celebrate my birthday with my husband. The food was amazing. The house salad was done with fresh assorted lettuce. With home made tofu. The dressing was lite and flavorful. Not over powering. I had a chicken dish that had the most amazing spices. Not hot spicy but flavorful spicy. I even had dessert. The cobbler was great. I hate overly sweet desert. This one had fresh amaretto whip creme and caramel drizzle. I could still taste the peaches, rubarb and apple. Yummy. The fun part was since it was my birthday i got to pick out a piece of jewelry.

Oh my goodness, another awesome experience! As I said on my last visit, I already knew what I was going to order the next time we found ourselves in the area. Well, we drove here just to enjoy dinner at the Cheel. We had the veggie momo, endive boats, the Himalayan 5 spice ribs and the paneer tarkari. Seriously excellent food! And yes, the cheesecake was the perfect end to our meal.

I was visiting home for the holidays and brought my family here for a dinner out. We had a wonderful dinner here! We started off with a variety of momo's; we found them to be flavorful and tasty. We sampled several of the dipping sauces (aachar); I personally recommend the fermented soybean or the creamy dipping sauce. The mains that we had were great; my wife and I had the Tarkari (very flavorful), my mother had the skewers (a holiday special, chicken and lamb, well seasoned), and my father had the lamb burger (cooked nicely). Overall, the prices were reasonable for the quality of food, the portions were well sized, and the food was well seasoned. We enjoyed the meal, and it was a wonderful memory of Nepal for us - we'll be back again next time we're home visiting family!

I dined here last night and the outdoor seating is really nice, there are heaters that kept the temperature comfortable. Knowledgeable waitress. Drinks seemed way overpriced. Usually don't see "Smirnoff" in the title of a cocktail that costs as much as a Stolichnaya one at the Pfister Blu Room. The food was really good and I liked trying the different achar sauces.

Loved this place! Very attentive service, sat us at the bar while we were waiting for my sister and a table, no pressure at all to order alcohol, which we do not drink. DELICIOUS food with complicated spices. We will all be back, with other people. They need more tables to make more people happy. LOL.

Fantastic. My third dining experience and I would rate each one the same - Five stars. Service is excellent and was happy to meet the owner who came out and greeted tables on this busy Tuesday night. Came with my daughter who lives in New York a few days ago and she was very impressed. Thought she was dining in Manhattan not Thiensville. Wonderful vegetarian options. I will definitely be back with friends and family.

Awesome addition to the area and a totally different style of food that I'm used to which is great. Craft cocktails are amazing! Overall it's a great atmosphere but not exactly a place I can take the whole family for dinner due to the cost and lack of kid friendly options. Would also like to see more vegetarian entree options. Live music on occasion is a nice touch. A great place to take your significant other for cocktails and desert. Customer service from the staff and owners is great. A solid 4 stars and getting better all the time. Love it!

My husband and I stumbled upon this restaurant earlier this evening. It had a lovely outdoor dining area and lots of parking, so we stopped. We didn't realize until after we were served drinks that they served a Himalayan style restaurant--something I love but hubby would hate. Yet, he ordered the grilled salmon with tamarind glaze, asparagus, and saffron rice. They cooked the fish perfectly. He LOVED it. I had two new things I've never tried, a cold bean noodle salad called fing and vegetable cheel that was out of this world yummy. Our new favorite neighborhood restaurant. Oh, and our server was delightful!

  • Corey C.

Come to the Cheel for an authentic taste of the Himalayas. The flavors here are truly unique, and may not immediately meld with a midwesterner's potentially bland pallet. Instead, be prepared for a flavor adventure blending Indian, Burmese, and Asian. One of the proprietors was born and raised in Kathmandu Nepal and immigrated to the US. Having been to Kathmandu, I can vouch that the food and decorations are totally authentic. I do have to ping them that there is not enough bone and sinew in the meat compared to authentic Nepali street food. The meat is prepared authentically, but the cuts of meat are of a much higher quality (according to the highest American standards). (That's a very good thing BTW). The ambiance itself is typical of a nice Theinsville restaurant, but there are many interesting Nepali artifacts to check out, including a huge original master Thanka painting on one wall. Check out the Cheel!

I have never tried this cuisine before so I was unsure of what to expect. This being said, the food was absolutely delicious. We ordered four "tidbits" to share and each dish was an explosion of flavors. The sauces were very good as well. The many awards this place has won were not lying The staff were awesome and the owner (at least from the picture on the website) was very friendly and welcoming. It felt like home. We will definitely be coming back.

  • Sarit A.

The restaurant was hardly ethnic in its appearance rather more like a gasro pub. The waiters were disorgenized. Very pricy in view of the small portions. The lentile soup was great as well as the meat dumplings and duck appetizer. The white skate fish was bad. Very salty with an aftertaste. The salmon was also covered in a thick layer of salty paste. They offered cheap tea bags with tepid water. Only one desert option as they ran out of the second option. All in all the experience was disappointing and expensive for what it was worth. Not coming back.

Exactly what I'm looking for in Milwaukee. Can't feed your entire family here? Great, go home and make something better - nobody wants to see your kid's kid's kids running around an upscale cocktail lounge. What a beautiful bar. I very much hope they continue serving food until 11p.m. - Milwaukee is almost as bad as no-alcohol-on-Sundays-Minnesota when it comes to late-night eats. I've been full each time, and have ordered: 5-spice ribs*, steak rogenjosh, and the pork choyla and chef salad were great together and I almost couldn't finish. Careful, all the spices will really make you want dessert. Ingredients sourced from farmers @ yelp.com/biz/thiensville… YAY! Also, this placed got missed on the last Yelp-Milwaukee's "Mo' Mojitos" weekly Yelp, with lots of creativity behind the bar, make sure you don't go green (in the face). Friday night's live music has been really enjoyable * don't ignore the rice in the fancy cup until after you finish your meal

Quite OK The place is made very well and their sauces are quite good. Dont expect authentic nepali/burmese food which is what I was . Their serving size is quite small for pricing (smaller than most tapas places) . Staff is friendly but I think they have to have entrees and be more authentic or tapas style. They were offering specials as entrees and so was priced up. I would pay more for good food and reasonable quantity. I just felt the small portions were shadowing their food quality
