We recently had dinner at Jose's and hadn't been here in a while (as it's not too often that we're in Racine anymore). Dinner was just as great as I remember. First, the important part...if you are a margarita girl like me, you will LOVE Jose's!! There is a HUGE drink menu and the margaritas are OUTSTANDING. The best, without a doubt. Not only do you get to choose your tequila (seriously, there are at least 50), but you also get to choose the mixer (I always go with Cointreau), and it arrives in a chilly, shiny mini-shaker which is enough for 2 glasses. (and who doesn't love the sound of a cocktail shaker shakin'...it's gotta be one of my favorite sounds in the world...wonder if it comes in a ringtone...hmmm) They also have a bunch of flavored and blended margs too (but I'm always on the rocks w/salt, so I don't know how good those may or may not be). Next, complimentary chips and homemade salsa. Delicious. I ordered the Chicken Enchiladas and they were fabulous. Made with FRESH, flavorful chicken (no bland canned chicken here!). The refried beans are good, wasn't crazy about their rice but don't usually eat the rice anyway. Can't wait to make the trip to Jose's again soon!

I had the fish tacos it was really good. The chips and salsa was a great touch, as well as the fresh made guacamole. If I am in the area will most defiantly come in again.

Guacamole is five stars - customized and prepared at your table. Beer is cold. Margaritas are good. Generally the entrees are decent - nothing special. Fun place to go with kids or in a group. We go here at least once a month. Long waits on the weekend.

First time here.... Food and service were great! My dad had the lobster burritos for lunch and recommends and I had the "Tabasco " taco lunch! Mucho bueno!

If I was a dead girl walking and had one final meal that would go with me to the afterlife, I would choose tortilla chips and spicy salsa. I imagine my meal at Jose's on this particular outing would be similar to it. After being seated, we received the largest bowl of complimentary chips I have ever had at any latin restaurant. The standard red house salsa was superb, but there was one better. The young man delivering the warm, salty, fried tortilla triangles made an offering of "spicy salsa." Without hesitation, I nodded, and he returned with a spicy, verde-style salsa that made the experience that much more divine. I know that Jose's street tacos are among the finest I have tastest, so it was without further ado that I chose one of my favorites: chipotle tequila shrimp tacos. Typing the name of the tacos makes my mouth water. My fellow diner went with the fried scallop tacos with chipotle cream sauce, so we did an even exchange of one taco to try the other person's. I found that the seafood in both varieties was done very well. The shrimp was cooked to the right degree of doneness, and the scallops were cushy and creamy with their blanket of light batter. With all of the chip consumption, I left with a to-go container. But, I am happy to make a second go of my Jose's visit with lunch for the following day. Their prices are somewhat steep, but their food shines. You receive quality fare and service, so the price tag is not as difficult to stomach. Besides, there is no room left in your stomach after a delicious meal at this joint. Enjoy the food and forget the figures (both physical and monetary).

Being Hispanic the benchmark runs a little higher. The setting was nice & service good. The fresh avacado made @ your table was great & freshly made chips were also good. Steak I ordered was very good & fact it was smothered in grilled onions-loved it. Sangria Margarita was very good but ordered stronger margarita 2nd time. The only reason did not give 5 stars was because there salsa's. One had no taste the other was too hot; basically burned taste buds off. (I liked it but Gringo's I was with avoided it like plaque). They need to find a happy medium. Ordered Steak & portabello mushroom take out next day-it was really good.

We at here twice while visiting family....food was good, but the service was not. Customer service is key to a business

This really is my all time favorite mexican restaurant! I love the food, the drinks and the atmosphere! We eat a lot of mexican food and this place is the best! Never had a bad night there yet.

this is a big margarita bar so if you're a fan of those you should check this place out. They also bring you a free nacho plate and salsa. I'm not too sure if I went on a special day or anything but someone told me if I buy a drink from the bar I can get all you can eat tacos!! I thought that was amazing! you dont get stuff like this back home in Canada

My wife and I have dined here multiple times. The food is good and quick.

Whenever I am remotely close to Racine, this is were I always want to stop for lunch or dinner. I love their chips, salsa and chimichangas! The frozen sangria is great too. They make fresh guacomole at your tableside, which I have yet to try. Besides their main menu, they have a sheet of specials. The staff has always been friendly. The restrooms sometimes have a Spanish lesson tape pipped in. So you can learn things like how to ask, "When is the next train arriving?"

$16 for a grouper special is not unreasonable unless it's frozen fish. I'm from New England and I'm not fooled by frozen fish even after it's been blackened and smothered in a runny black beans and a cream sauce. Additionally, people that love the margaritas at this place are going to go crazy with this suggestion: go buy a $1 slushie at 7-11 then head to your local liquor store for a pint of $2 tequila then mix them together and enjoy! Frozen fish and slushie ice margaritas make Jose's an absolute loser!! Until I googled them to make sure I had some facts straight for this review I had no idea they are a chain, seeing that I immediately thought "THAT explains it!". Jose's is right on par with an Appleby's or Friday's, only more expensive. Observation: the guacamole cart - the first time it was brought out while I was at Jose's I looked around because I thought someone was pounding on a table! No joke! Softer wheels or make the guacamole in the back. Seriously disruptive! You're a Mexican restaurant. I bet you can make guacamole and don't need to see you make it in front of me. Note: no joke!, again Their website advertised "blue half gallon margaritas"! Yeah! I bet THAT's made fresh! Go to La Tapatia on South side, get the $3.50 taco plate and truly enjoy REAL Mexican cuisine that's tasty, fresh and underpriced. P.S. No, I did not tell a manager that I did not like my meal. If you are charging $16 for frozen fish then obviously you're ok with it because you did it in the first place.

I found this place on Yelp and tried on a whim. Very glad we stopped by. Great food and prices were fine. It was packed on Saturday night, but the wait wasn't very long. And yes, there are Spanish language lessons playing in the restrooms!

The food here is great! My favorite menu item at Jose's is the table side guacamole where they make it to your liking.

There are few Mexican cuisine restaurants that hit it out of the park. This one does that. We ordered the table-side guacamole. I had two delicious margaritas and a buttered-steak burrito. The burrito was okay. And the salsa was m'eh. But the service, across the board, was top-notch. Everyone was so kind! I never had to ask for anything, and when you're a parent, that really helps. If I'm ever in the area again, I may just have to return.

Really disappointed by my last visit a few nights back. Made the mistake of ordering fish fry from a Mexican restaurant! The batter was so spicy (hot) that I ended up peeling it off, only to find (a pretty small amount of) mushy fish beneath it. Not so great. I've always loved the guacamole prepared at the table, but I was tasting avocados all night long! They're actually one of my favorite health foods. The quality of the food has really slipped.

Sit down Mexican restaurants are usually fast and this place is no exception. The two Korean Bulgogi Street Tacos were the star of our meal. Short ribs are marinated and served with pickled cabbage and a sriracha aioli. Our friendly server made a chance stop off the interstate a memorable one.

I started going to Jose's based on a recommendation from a coworker. Now, I usually try to make a stop at Jose's whenever I visit Racine. The fajitas are fantastic here. I have a hard time trying other things because I always want the fajitas. I have ordered the chimichanga and the asian inspired tacos. Those were good as well. During happy hour, the place gets pretty crowded. They have special pricing on the margaritas and a free taco bar.

Wow! I've been to another Blue Sombrero in Brookfield and was very pleased. I had dinner here and it was fantastic! I had the Hurracan, a steak and shrimp burrito. It was delicious. It also came with roasted potatoes that had onions and peppers. It also had jalapeños, which I picked out, but it was still hottttt! Next time I get them minus the jalapeños. The margaritas were delicious as well. I will be back soon...

I went here for their happy hour which was a bit crowded. They did provide a free taco bar, good margaritas and good service.

My favorite place for Mexican and Margaritas! You can get authentic Mexican and street food. The enchiladas are awesome!!!

Came today for Happy Hour and sat at bar. Bartender waited on me, Vincent. Wow, cannot believe he just started working here....second day. You would never know. He was very personable, attentive and prompt to my every need. The Blue Sombrero has a great asset when they hired him. Give him a huge pat on the back from me

  • Kate H.

OMG, they have the BEST salsa I have ever, ever tasted. It's got a sweet, smoky flavor. My dining partner and I ate 5 little bowls of it during our dinner! The hot, green salsa wasn't so great, though. It was too hot and not good enough flavor to make the hot of it worth it. Had blackened tilapia and it was so crisp, spicy, and delicious. My dining partner thought his entree was average (enchiladas). Service was fast and excellent, even though the place was super busy. I highly recommend this place. I can't wait to go back to Racine and visit here again!

The food and service CAN'T compare to other Mexican restaurants I've been to! OUTSTANDING!! Authentic and reasonably priced. I will definitely be coming back!

Off the charts!!! New favorite mexican of all time!!!! Oh my gosh the FISH TACOS!!! There are no words...... 4 for $11 and amazing margs!!!!!!!

  • Joze C.

I was really excited to visit Jose's blue sombrero for the first time but I'll have to say I was somewhat disappointed. Got sat and it took the server about 10 minutes to greet & take our drink order. Food was ordered and was prepared quickly which was a plus but then things stayed unwell. Food was luke warm with less then average flavor to the dish. I ordered a basic dish (steak tacos & rice) and even that was just not very flavorful .

In town from the Southwest and can say without a doubt this is damn good Mexican food. We were all blown away how good the food was. Service was great too.

Second time here. Tableside guac is great as was the salsa. Drinks were better the first time here as this time the margarita was too sweet and too little tequila. Waitress was excellent, staying close, but not hovering. Was nice and refilled my water several times:)

  • Kristen S.

I have been to Jose's MANY times and have had great experiences, but tonight was a shock. After patiently waiting for our table, we were seated and our waitress immediately got our table-side guac order going. We then ordered our drinks (and though I had to ask her multiple times for a straw) we were quite happy. Our food was great, the guac was great, drinks were great. Service was bad. We were never asked if we wanted water nor did we get the opportunity to ask for it. Our waitress never offered to get us more drinks (which we would have ordered, had she asked). She never offered dessert. She brought the check when my friend still had a huge plate full of food in front of her. We wanted to sit and chat and eat at a leisurely pace, however, the restaurant had other ideas. We paid the bill rather early since she seemed to be in a hurry for us to do so, but we had no intention of leaving yet. My friend still had half of her drink yet and we were not finished. That is until someone from the restaurant came up to our table, pulled up a chair and said he had to "talk to us about something." That is when he asked us to LEAVE THE RESTAURANT because he had a table of 14 that he needed to seat. I have never in my life been asked to leave a restaurant, especially when my friend still had her drink in front of her that was unfinished. He offered us a free drink at the very crowded bar (which had no seats available for the three of us) as compensation for moving. We were VERY polite when we left, but we were also VERY peeved. What kind of establishment asks their patrons to leave!?!?! Especially when someone hasn't even finished a drink yet!? Upon exiting the restaurant there seemed to be ample room in the dining area on the North side of the restaurant. It is unclear to me why he had to ask us to go. He will not have to ask us ever again, since we will never be back. Such a shame.

Not just good Mexican food, but good, like, FUSION Mexican food. I've never seen a bahn mi Thai taco on a menu (unfortunately, they were out of them). The Korean pulled pork bolgogi taco was amazingly flavorful, the margaritas delicious, chips and salsa excellent, atmosphere comfortable and casual, the crowd diverse. Wish it were a little closer to the East Coast; I'd love to try everything on the menu.

  • Kayla J.

I have gone here several times with friends the past couple of weeks. The margaritas are delicious!! However the menu is a little pricier, especially for lunch. My favorite is the fajita tacos. Their made to order guacamole is very good too.

Great time! The seafood burrito is the best! Let me tell you.. I have been trying seafood burritos in Texas and California and these are my favorite! our server nick was friendly, prompt, and knew how to deliver our margaritas on time! Loved it!

It was our first time here. We walked in & stood at the host station for a minute before the hostess sitting 10 feet away got up to seat us. It took 10 minutes For the waiter to take our drink orders. It took another 20 minutes for him to come back with drinks and take our orders. While taking our orders, the hostess came to ask the waiter a couple questions - in the middle of taking our order. We ordered a calamari appetizer and never got it. The steak didn't have any flavor. The rice had To have been yesterday's, as it was rock hard and crispy. I can't even remember the rest. Would NOT recommend. Especially for the already ridiculous price points.

Love José's! Really good drinks... Love the cyclone and the orange creme margaritas and yaya juice. Great tableside guac. Never had a bad meal. Sometimes the wait is a bit long but I pass the time at the bar sipping margaritas and enjoying chips and salsa.

Have not been in some time because of a rather poor experience the last time I was there. This time it was a much better experience but there are other places in the area that provide a very similar menu that is not as costly. Yes the drinks were good, the table side guacamole was good and the food was good. The highlight was the waitress who seemed to be there right before she was need then melted away again so as to not appear to be hovering. The meal was well paced and very nicely done, price points were the put off for me.

Free Taco Bar during Happy Hour??? Can't beat that!!!! :-) Jose's Blue Sombrero is a fun place to meet friends for happy hour or to get dinner with the family. I usually come here with friends for some drinks and have the guacamole. I also had complete meals here and enjoy every bite! I love the combo plate (choose 3 items) and I tend to eat too much every time! I walk away wishing I didn't eat as much. The enchiladas, taco salad, tacos, burritos are all very good. The atmosphere is fun and upbeat. The service has always been good. Every once in awhile there might be a wait for get seated.

  • Linda L.

Their chips was really good. I ordered Jamaican Jerk Chicken and wasn't pleased with it at all. I'm not sure whether it was because of me not feeling that hungry or the food wasn't good. It was just not what I like.

  • Meagan C.

The fish tacos are AWESOME and you have to have a margarita but be prepared to shell out a pretty penny for anything decent alcohol-wise. The table-side guac is a nice touch, too!

    (4)
  • Erin M.

I love their Wednesday margarita deals. They have so many flavors. The food is really good too. They make their guacamole fresh right at your table and the service has always been good. I've never had a bad time at Jose's.

This is one of the best Mexican restaurants I have been to! The food was reasonably priced and delicious. We sampled each other's dishes and they were all very good. (This included the enchiladas, tamales, and seafood burrito.). Also, they let our daughter order a single burrito from the combination instead of the two!

  • Joe G.

Great Mexican, fast, inexpensive, and good. How can you go wrong? Oh, yeah. It's down in Racine, so it's a bit of a drive. That not being their fault, I have to say that this is one of my favorite Mexican places. Everything is good. Starting with the chips and salsa, very nicely done. If you enjoy hot, you can ask for their hot green salsa for your chips, it's wonderful stuff. The atmosphere is very nice, pleasant without being quaint, and the service has always been top notch. We've never run into a server that seemed stumped by kids, either, maybe that's just luck.

    (5)
  • Missy R.

The chips were warm which I liked. The food was ok at the price they charged. It would have been better at $3 cheaper. If you have someone who has a hard time walking this place will be challenging. Too many steps in the multi level restaurant.

We stopped in here during a family visit to Racine on a holiday weekend when we were all in search of margaritas. Our first choice was closed for the whole weekend, so we landed here. At 6 p.m. on a Saturday night the wait was 45 minutes, but we were tired of rolling around. We scored a table in the bar where we could nurse our drinks and eat chips, salsa and guacamole, and the wait was just fine. The restaurant is attractive and though it is large, it is divided into various more intimate, smaller, attractive rooms. Everyone was very friendly and efficient, which is good when you've got people waiting out the door. We were so lucky to get that bar table, and we were about to order, when we were shown to our table. The margaritas were great! (I had two, as did another of my companions. I went with the frozen mango, always a pleaser!) The dinner offerings are interesting and many sounded so tasty, I had trouble choosing what I wanted. Finally I chose the lobster enchiladas, which were delicious and very filling. Everyone at our table enjoyed their food. If we are in Racine again, we will stop in here for friendly service, good Mexican food and delicious margaritas, but we may try to find "off hours" to drop in so we don't have to wait so long.

I only stop by Blue Sombrero once a year when I am in town for the Great Lakes Brew Fest. It is my choice for lunch before a big day of beer drinking. It is located a mile down the road from the hotel that I stay at. I like the decor and it feels just like I am used to for a Mexican restaurant. The fresh guacamole, which is prepared fresh at your table, is tasty and should not be missed. I just wish they would put rubber wheels on the cart because it makes a lot of noise as they roll it over the tile floor. The lobster burrito is a tasty mess of cheese and lobster. I don't think it is very healthy, but my arteries can take it once a year. The mole sauce on the enchiladas was not offered until I asked for it, but it wasn't as flavorful as I have grown accustomed to at other places. I have seen some giant glasses by the bar, but unfortunately I have never had a margarita here because I always come here for lunch before the Great Lakes Brew Fest. As much as I love them, I don't need tequila before a long day of beer drinking. The service I have experienced for the lunch times that I have been there is good but not great. The waitresses are always nice, but I feel like maybe they aren't fully awake at noon. (I suspect they have a long day ahead of them still.) Overall, I enjoy Blue Sombrero and I will definitely be back for my next pre-GLBF lunch.

This place is great! Only downside is that unless you're here at lunch on a weekday....it's ALWAYS busy. There is a reason for that though. Their food and drinks are great! The service has almost always been fabulous and I find that sitting at the bar, or even waiting for a seat at the bar is usually much faster than waiting for an actual table. My top recommendations are the tableside guacamole, fajita fingers and jalawhoppers for appetizers. Main dishes....any of their tacos are great, but I am partial to the steak tacos and the chipotle shrimp tacos. By far my favorite dish is the seafood burritos...the chipotle cream sauce is amazing. Don't forget to ask for the spicy green salsa also....so hot, but very tasty!!! You'll need a tornado to wash down all that food and spice, but their prices are reasonable, and the atomsphere is fun. Just be prepared to wait most of the time.

Wanted to like this place My fiancee and her sister love it.That being said I was VERY disappointed. The chips and salsa were the highlight of the meal.I ordered the Black Mole chicken. The tortillas were like leather.Had a hard time cutting them I finally gave up and just unwrapped and put them on the side of my plate. As far as the Mole sauce. It was absolutely the worst Mole I have ever had. They really have no business calling it Mole it tasted like bad barbecue sauce. The service was good and our waiter was fine.I have come to the conclusion that this is a good place to hangout for happy hour. But the food is for people who dont really know what actual Mexican food is supposed to taste like.

Last night my husband and I decided to try out The Blue Sombrero for the first time and we were delightfully NOT disappointed. Great food, great drinks, and great service. We couldn't have asked for a better dining experience. When we arrived, there was a little wait but only because it was a beautiful summer Saturday night around 7:30pm. We were seated in a nice quieter section of the restaurant. My husband had the pork enchilada, which he loved. The star of the meal had to be my dish. I had the pork in a tomatillo sauce which was out of this world. The sauce was spicy, the pork was super tender, and the refried beans and rice that accompanied it were great. I also had a frozen drink called a Tornado. Holy cow, was that good!! It is a combination of frozen margarita and frozen sangria swirled together into what I can say is the perfect summer drink! Now the prices are not that of a little whole-in-the-wall taco place. This place is a little more upscale and the menu and prices reflect that. 100% worth every penny, in my opinion. Our server was a young man named Nick and he was better than some servers at 4-star restaurants. He was attentive without hovering. Kind without being pushy or phoney. And he was super polite. Great job young man!!!! We would come back to the restaurant just for your service alone, even if the food had been mediocre. Which it wasn't. The food was phenominal! We will be back soon. Thank you for providing our area with such a delightful place to eat!

I'm relocating to Kenosha and friends have been raving about this place for months. I figured how could it be? It was off the charts fantastic! The tableside guacamole was amazing in flavor, The enchiladas and beans were perfect, again the flavor was outrageous not too spicy but tons and tons of flavor. We all had the Bloody Mary's and they were off the hook good too with meet sticks And kinds of fixings, great flavor! I highly highly highly recommend this restaurant I will be coming back here as often as possible. The service was very good. Attentive without being smothering. The decor was very cute Mexican bar-ish overall I really liked it.

Really wanted to love this place...but the chicken and steak fajitas were a complete letdown. Under the mountain of peppers and onions was a skimpy portion of heavily over-seasoned meat, especially at $18.99! Most places charge that much for fajitas for two. Steak slices were way too thin (the tortillas were thicker). May have just made a bad menu choice. Regrets!

I went with a date on Friday night here. When I arrived, there was sadly a 30-40 minute wait. It was quite loud, and obviously busy. Could be a side effect of being St. Patrick's weekend. The chips and salsa were good, and they provided a spicier salsa upon request. My date reported that his meal was pretty mediocre--bland. He got a tamale and an enchilada. I got Jose's blue seafood tacos. They were delicious, if a bit over-queso'd. I liked the beans as well. The frozen cyclones we had were OK, but nothing too memorable. The price wasn't bad, and the service was good, even though they were extremely busy. I feel like their food menu could be a bit larger. I'll definitely go again sometime.

I steer clear of the Margarits here, not because they aren't good ( they're great). The problem is how very ENOrMOUS they are! Just kidding, you should indulge in one, they are a great buy. The menu, tacos are great, and the burritos are even better. There is a surf and turf burrito that is out of this world, rich and oh-so-good. Table-side guac is good...look out for the sound of the guac cart on the tile floor there (crazy loud and bad) . The staff is attentive and polite, just basically good at their jobs. I have stopped by Jose's each time I visit home for a catch-up dinner with my mom, and not once had an unhappy visit.

The best Happy Hour 3-6 everyday but Sunday,(they are closed on Sunday) cheap margaritas and free taco bar can't get much better then that. On the menu they have this seafood burrito, OMG it has this rich creamy sauce in there yummy!!. If you order the guacomole it is made right at your table. I enjoy the food and atmosphere, good place to grab some drinks with your friends.

One of the BEST happy hours I have EVER found! I didn't rate a full 5 stars because I only go there during happy hour so I don't know how the rest of the food is. But the free taco bar is great! : )

I found this place using Urbanspoon on the iPhone last year and I am so glad I did. The Mexican Food is excellent here. One of the better places in the area and the prices are not expensive at all. So if you are in the area and want some great Mexican food I recommend you stop by and try this place.

Awesome Salmon Enchipotleado. Dishes are very generous and decently priced. The food is surprisingly close to what I'd get in southern California, where I live. The bar area is pretty loud with music.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization.
