This was our first Wisconsin fish fry, and it was pretty lame. We had to wait for a table on a Friday night (longer than the time we were given, which always annoys me -- guess longer, not shorter!), and when our lobster buzzer finally went off, the hostess/cashier stand was pretty chaotic. Seated, we settled pretty quickly on our order and hit the salad bar, which was a mixed bag. The salad itself was the standard stuff, the seafood chowder was decent, and the other soup (bell pepper?) was not great. The fried fish, and in fact all of the food, was bland, bland, bland. Only a hefty dose of salt made it taste like anything...and then I tried the tartar sauce, which tasted exactly like Miracle Whip. Maybe they waved the pickle relish over the jar? One bite of that and I was done. Service was ok, though they clearly had more tables than the available servers could handle. Also, I'm not sure what's up with the massive amount of outdoorsy kitsch -- any large/ugly wild animal you could name was up on the wall somewhere. And the dining room looked straight out of 1994, with leather chairs on wheels (that I promptly tripped over) and godawful carpet. I didn't quite run screaming out of here, but I definitely thought about it. A poor introduction to Oshkosh, that's for sure!

I've driven by this place may times and finally decided to stop in and try it. In hindsight I should have kept on driving. I am a huge fan of ribeyes so I ordered the 16 oz ribeye steak. It came with a trip to the soup/salad bar and some bread. I got the seafood chowder which I swear was right out of a soup can or commercial bulk sized soup bag. It was bland and very generic and definitely not home made. I finished off my soup and waited for my steak to show up. When it did I could barely suppress my shock. Like I said I am a huge fan of ribeyes but they have to be cooked right. I ordered rare and it was brought out very medium. Ok, I can deal with that. Many restaurants can't figure out how to make a steak rare. Then I proceeded trying to saw into it with some difficulty. This was one of the toughest cuts of meat I have ever had! To make matters worse it was FRIED!! It is just wrong for a steak place to fry a steak! Needless to say I will never eat there again.

Such a disappointing Christmas dinner. We waited 20 minutes for a waitress to take our drink order. And the prime rib, which should be the star of the dinner, was dry and mealy. When we asked if there was some available that was more rare they said 'not on a buffet, it's too hard to cut'. It was better there last year! No fruit pies and no cream puffs on the dessert table. I wish I knew our waitresses name because she was wonderful. Looks like we will be looking for a new place for Christmas dinner after years of going to Kodiak Jacks :(

What happened to Kodiak Jacks? An Oshkosh staple when we visit for AirVenture each year. Usually long waits and lines out the door. This year the parking lot was not full, restaurant 3/4 empty. Then the good came... Oysters still frozen at the bottom, steaks over cooked. Beer tasted like the lines from the keg were dirty. No American Express. I have to say after coming here for years, this was the worst experience I have ever had here. Sadly I doubt I will come back, looks like Kodiak Jacks is as dead as the legendary bear.

Went last night for a family dinner, and quite frankly was totally disappointed. The waitress seemed like she didn't want to be there so the service we recieved sucked and the salad bar lacked variety compared to other supper clubs/restaurants. The portion size vs cost of meal is ridiculous. We paid $21 for 6 ounce hunk of salmon, that is way over priced. I personally ordered a 16 ounce rib eye which is my favorite cut of steak and it came out pan fried at a steak house NOT COOL. Will never go there again!!!!

Visited OshKosh for the Airventure Airshow. Heard lots of good things about this place. We arrived just after dinner hour and were originally told we could only have bar fare from bar menu while sitting in bar area. A gentleman working as a manager of some type saw our menus and said we could choose off the regular menu. The food did take a very long time and i was starting to think they were out fishing in Lake Winnebago to catch my Grouper. The meals were delivered after almost a 45 minute wait and my Blackened Grouper was excellent. My business partners Steak was cooked to perfection. We were overall happy with our meal and experience. If you are here for Airventure, this is a great place to try.

Well, this was a bust. I have been trying to find a good place for breakfast on the weekends since moving to Oshkosh, so I went here to try the brunch buffet. It was very busy, so that probably contributed to the experience. Getting a table was a little confusing due to how hectic the lobby area was, but it went smoothly enough. We sat in the buffet area and flagged down a waitress. The real issue is the food. It's just bulk-bought type stuff you would find in a high school cafeteria. It was very disappointing. Some of the stuff on the buffet seemed undercooked too (the bacon primarily). I give it a 2 only because the staff seemed friendly enough, but due to the food I will not be returning when I can get a big plate of better breakfast food for $7 at any other restaurant. I can't speak to lunch or dinner but I won't be returning to check.

Please pass up this restaurant. The soup is made at someone's home and brought in (illegal) and the lobster is bought at Sam's Club. The staff works extremely hard but the management is piss poor. Even if you complain about your meal, you will be charged $9 for the soup and salad bar. Don't even go there.

Long time fan. I know the "soup guy". He goes in six days a week to make home made soups. I can easily fill up on the soup and salad bar, then have most of my meal to take home! The Prime Rib is the best in town, as are the BBQ Ribs. When we have a problem, they are always happy to take care of us, too.

It was ok... I have a hard time going lower than 3 but 3 is sort of a gift. The salad bar, typical. NOthing extra special or fancy about it. The soup wasn't very good, just bland. I ordered the French Onion. There was NO SOUP, it was soggy croutons under a mountain of cheese. The falvor seemed to be there but with no soup, only croutons that sopped up all the liquid, who could honestly tell. I ordered a ribeye, this is where the 3 stars come in. Mine was done perfectly. Med-rare, beautiful pink but warm center. Cut easily, nice size, even the gristle had good flavor, I like that part, too. My husband got the T-Bone. It was Medium, almost borderline med-well. He said it was ok... I wanted to send it back. But he ate all of it so it must not have been terrible. He said he has certainly had far better. As a side I got the potato skins. That's escatly what they were, crispy, delicious, skins with sour cream to "dip" them in. I liked that. too. So it was an up and down sort of meal. There are places it could stand true improvement. But on other things, they hit it just right. My biggest complaint was the chairs! My God, they were so low I felt like I was eating back at the kiddie table at grandma's! The booths seemed to have a normal height but really, new chairs would be a terrific thing! Overall it was ok. Stop here if you want but if another place looks more appealing, go there instead. I live about 2 hours south, I won't be dying to make the trip back just to eat at Kodiak Jacks.

This place has so much potential but the food is lacking. I love the atmosphere, but I'm not sure how well it fits in Oshkosh. I think it belongs attached to Black Wolf or the Wilderness in the Dells. The servers have always been nice and attentive, but the food just seems mass produced and with no real care taken while preparing it.

Steak was paper thin tough could not chew some of it. Salad dressing was from out of a bottle. Waitress recommended the ribeye because people were sending back their prime rib, I can't imagine how bad the prime rib would have been when the ribeye was as bad as it was. The decor was nice but that was it. Definitely not worth the money

I decided to treat some friends to dinner. Living in oshkosh I hadn't yet tried this "steak and seafood" restaurant. I should of gone fishing myself. With my meal came the salad bar. Very bare and not allot of choices. Ok I can understand food cost, I had two salads and each one I couldn't eat because of a hair in one and the second time the pasta salad tasted like it was 2 weeks expired. When are food finally came out after a 45 min wait. (It was a slow monday) I had ordered the fried ahrimp. The breading was extremely mushy yet. My friends haddock was dripping in grease and the fish itself was dry. There was no taste to any of the food. The only good thing we had was the bread... which was brought out after are meals. I'm not one to ever look for a free meal but I had maybe two bites and I was done. As was one of my friends. They comped 10 dollers off of a 50 doller check. I will not be returning.

Great food, friendly staff. My bacon wrapped filet was done to perfection. Along with the loaf of bread, full salad bar and baked potato, we barely had room to share dessert. I will have to tell my family about this place.

Repeat customer. Went for the Sunday Brunch today (Sun 9am-1:30pm). Good food, nice variety, pleasing presentation. They serve lunch and dinner. The dinner menu is not to be missed. The atmoshpere is visually interesting and adds to the rustic, yet classy, dining experience. No restaurant is without its occasional errors as other reviewers have pointed out, but I have always had a consistently pleasant experience here. If you are from out-of-town, you really need to check this place out.

My boyfriend and I just went here a couple of days ago. We both ordered a steak - I got the bone-in NY strip and he got the ribeye. They both came with soup and salad bar which was a nice gimmick but the soup was nasty. The seafood chowder had no seafood in it and was over peppered, the hamburger soup was as blah as it gets. The salad bar was fresh but had your typical salad dressing that they probably buy in bulk for cheap. The steaks were pan fried, not grilled and tasted like they were lower quality meat which I guess could have been ok if you're not picky but not for the price!!! Our meal was at least $20 more than it should have been for the quality! Save yourself some money and go to another restaurant!

Started real food. Waitress is real nice and very attentive. The cheese sticks were hot not warm but not to hot eat. The salad bar was nice selection. The music is the best of oldies and current style of music. I ordered steak and lobster. The lobster came with butter sauce which sat on top of a candle which was lite that kept the butter from becoming solid. Great trick. The steak was cooked a little over medium rear but not much. The steak did not seem to be marinated at all. They provided a sauce for the steak but did not add a lot of flavor. The was very good and the service was great. The bill number is; 1113mdgsb6mjgr

I have been here on several occasions. The inside has a hunter/cabin feel with dated furniture. For their prices you'd think they could afford to have menus that aren't falling apart. The food is extremely subpar for the prices also. I have ordered the prime rib several times, all medium rare, and have only gotten it cooked correctly once out of atleast half a dozen times. Ordered the 10-12oz Ribeye the last time. Not cooked to what was ordered but decent. Entrees do include the soup and salad bar. Soup is always lacking taste and flavorless. The only thing I like is that they have a decent happy hour. I always like to give a place a few try's before I come to a conclusion. The only reason I can come to as to why this place is still in business, is because it's in oshkosh. From now on if I want a steak I'll go the extra way to Appleton. I'd advise you to make the extra effort for a good steak!

This place has gone way downhill. Food was terrible. I had a steak and it was terrible. Do they do their shopping at walmart? It was barely warm when it came out. Food took forever to arrive. The other part that bugged me was how destroyed the menus were. Pages were falling out, they were all sticky. I think it is time for some new menus at Kodiak Jacks.

Kodiak Jack's is not a bad restaurant in general, except for the fact that they screwed up my T-Bone steak three times and ended up overcharging me for the order. Foodwise, they have fairly good burgers and fairly good deal on the salad bar. After all, the salad and soup bar are plentiful and all you can eat. However, my biggest gripe is definitely about the steaks. My boyfriend and I went there last night and we ordered two t-bone steaks. What happened was that both our steaks were under-cooked. He ordered a medium steak and it came out medium rare while I ordered a medium rare steak that came out rare. The two times I sent it back, it was still rare and by the third time, it became something like medium well. After that, our waitress told us that she would take out the charge for the steak in the order, however, she ended up charging us $9.00 for the salad bar when all I had were two soups. Talk about awful service! Under normal circumstances, I'd give the place 3 stars and I normally do not dock ratings due to rude service, but that incident makes me hesitant to come back since I can't justify the quality of the food to make up for the service, especially because it is a moderately priced place.

Not bad as long as you are not expecting great. We have eaten here a few times with family as it is a mid-point between locations. I would not really consider ordering a steak (or seafood except for a fish fry) from here. The food is OK - nothing really great. Prices seem high to me based on the quality of the food. More like a nice Greek family restaurant in Milwaukee. But they have a nice salad & soup bar that is included with most dinners. They seem to go for portion size over quality. Sandwiches are good. The food is usually well cooked. Can be loud (sometimes they have live music) and the vibe is kind of like the Greek Family restaurant version of a "northern hunter lodge." Service has always been very friendly and prompt.

My husband and I went here a few Saturday nights ago. I made reservations, and still had to wait 20 minutes. Then they sat us RIGHT by the kitchen door in a booth. It was noisy, smelly, and just down right frustrating!!! The atmosphere was like being at a buffet restaurant on a cruise ship. Not what we were hoping for at all!!! Then the best part.....our waiter was a total idiot!! I ordered the Kodiak cut RIB EYE...and this clown brings out the Giant Kodiak cut PRIME RIB!!!! Then has the nerve to argue with me, that it was what I ordered. I was so mad. He then walked away from our table. I let the prime rib sit there, because it was not what I ordered and NOT what I wanted. Finally after 10 minutes he comes back to our table and says" DO YOU WANT ME TO GET YOU SOMETHING ELSE!?!?!? Ummm, yes.....how about getting me what I ORDERED!!! I will say that when my steak arrived, it was good. Bland tasting, but tender and juicy. In hindsight I wish we would have talked to the manager at the time, but it was crazy in there...and we really aren't the kind of people that complain about much....but this was a horrible experience from start to finish. I just wanted to get out of there. I am giving this 2 stars only for the salad bar and the ok tasting steak. I will not go back.....

A friend recommended Kodiak Jack's and it seemed to meet the needs of our rather large group of picky eaters. I expected a steak joint with a backwoods flavor. It certainly had backwoods flavor, and they did serve steak. That's about all the praise I can give this place. The steak was an incredibly cheap cut, and not cooked according to the way everyone ordered it. My "medium" steak was actually well done. The salad was a bowl of iceberg lettuce with a few veggies mixed in for good measure. Not at all worth the price.

My wife and I have tried Kodiak Jacks a number of times leading to disappointment every time. Almost every entree is a disappointment. However some seafood dishes can reach mediocre. We travel quite a bit from places like Vegas to Florida to Milwaukee and we know great food and we know good food. This is neither even considering Oshkosh standards. Our most recent visit was on par. Our two boys split a sirloin medium-rare and it tasted gamy and frozen but prepared correctly. I had a ribeye medium-rare and it was prepared medium-well. I politely sent it back and the waitress kindly grabbed one already prepared for another patron. Well, it was butchered also to medium-well. The only salvation was the extremely kind waitress who reduced our bill, albeit by a whopping $8, but she also brought our boys an ice cream dessert dish (stating she knew both steaks were overdone) which led to a generous tip.

Wow. How was this place the talk of Oshkosh? From the outside (and the name) I thought I would be eating on linen table cloths - and sipping great wine. I was here on a Tuesday night at around 7:30 - and if felt more like a Vegas buffet at 4 AM. Gaudy and way too much to look at. The wine lists was approachable and had many different price points. The food was salty - but cooked well, and the steak was tender. To Carolyn's point, the steaks weren't cooked to how we ordered. My reco would be to ask for it rare, and send it back if you need it more well done. All in all, would I drop $20 on prime rib...no. I'd rather go to The Roxie and hang out with all the blue hairs - at least the steak would be good.

More like a "Lonestar" experience than a good steakhouse. Very crowded though on a Tuesday night. From my year in Wisconsin, if you want a great steak, try a SUPPER CLUB. ***Sorry but I don't know any good ones in Oshkosh***

  • Brandon P.

the ribeye steak looked good from appearance but was very thin and overcooked for my liking. I would not pay the prices they have for their steaks, way overpriced. I will not be returning as it took me 20 min just to place an order at the bar.

Three stars for being a place to eat warm food while seated. On those points they performed well, but the food wasn't anything to write home about (or return for). We went for the Sunday buffet, very popular, yet the lines were not long. They had things like scrambled eggs, mini waffles, french toast sticks, mashed potatoes, chicken, a carving station, an omelet station, and a desert table. The only thing even remotely homemade was at the omelet bar, but it had no flavor. How about some salt and pepper while you're making it? The desert table was fun, 3 flavors of canned pudding, strawberry shortcake, chocolate cake, cheesecake, and more. Again, nothing was homemade or remotely special. But, it was warm, and all you can eat.

The food is normally pretty tasty. We don't buy steaks here. The free lunch with salad bar purchase is a great deal. The lunch portion was large enough for 2 meals. The service is good. Salad bar is OK but they should get something other than iceberg, or at put in a mixture.

when they first opened the food was great. but over time it has declined in quality. the salad bar is great, and the soup is good. i like the decor, but i don't like the wait times for tables. i do think the prices are a little high for what you get.
