I took someone who is very dear to me here for dinner on a very special occasion. We were just hoping for food that was edible out in the middle of the country, and we were so pleasantly surprised by a couple incredible dishes. The onion soup was very good, the spice rubbed fish was excellent, and the curried stew was just absolutely fantastic. The staff treated us extremely well, and the service was provided much more quickly than I expected on what appeared to be a busy night. Also, on the way out the door, we discovered some of the most amazing knitting on display and for sale near the exit. I can't remember the name of the knitter, but my friend told me she was the famous grandmother queen of knitting and the craftsmanship is out of this world!

Great food and service. Fine dinning in the most unexpected place. Make sure to share deserts. So good. Only thing that could improve it is rotating tables so everyone could taste everything.

My wife and I have eaten here twice and found it outstanding both times. The preparation, taste and presentation of the food was as good as it gets. I would rate this among best restaurants within a hundred miles. Jane always makes sure that we have an enjoyable visit. Don't forget to save room for the Sticky Toffee Pudding!

Diamond in the rough. Wouldn't expect the quality and display of food in small town WI. Worth the hour drive to get there. Always delicious, love that they keep the tenderloin and pork on their changing menu. Wish they'd bring back the mushroom appetizer. Only complaint is we drove the hour to get there....Only to find them closed for vacation in March, an update on their website would have been nice to let people know. Will had back that way another time.

We live in the region and have been hearing about this place since we moved here in 2009. Decided to try it on the spur of the moment and got there before opening just before 5 PM. They were decent but not expecially welcoming and accommodated us. We had drinks at the bar and they came for us when they were ready. So far so good. I don't want to disparage the place, but the food is not sophisticated. I had the evening special, which was veal, which should have been dealt with differently. It was frankly tough, and should have been pounded into a cutlet or something. The sauce was definitely over-salted and may have been heated a bit too much, as it was starting to have an overcooked flavor. In my opinion, the attending spinach was a bit heavy on the stems and should have been sorted a bit better as well. My wife had two appetizer items, which looked reasonable, although the shrimp one was uninspired. The pork on masa was probably the best thing we had, as it was both nicely treated and flavorful. Considered having the chef's specialty desert, but decided enough was enough. Service was certainly acceptable and proper, and the staff were friendly once we were seated. The waitress even allowed my plate to remain until the utensils were properly placed after my wife had finished her dinner as well. Unusual for this part of the world, where staff training is haphazard at best. The interior is quite pleasant, actually an old storefront, but don't sit in the window if it's cold out. Our table was quite acceptable, however. We were very hopeful that the region had a masterpiece, but only found an acceptable but uninspired workmanlike operation. We hope they keep trying, but are not encouraged to become regulars. We are experience diners, not only regionally, but consider outselves knowledgeable about Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia dining as well; hence, reasonably qualified critics.

The Food: My husband and I both had the tenderloin. It was an OK piece of meat, no complaints there. It was what the meat was served with that I didn't care for. The meat sat atop some tasteless mashed potatoes and asparagus stumps. Asparagus should not be served when it's the size of a burly man's thumb! Yuck! The sauces served with the steak (a Worcestershire sauce reduction, and a smattering of a runny blue cheese dressing) could have been oh-so-much better. For a $30 entree I expected a better meal). The desserts were so-so. The sticky toffee pudding muffin was overly sweet and the lemon pound cake was dry. The Service: Friendly, top notch, and very attentive. The Space: uninspired, cold 80's decor.

While it's true that some of the food is very good, this is not the place to go if you have any food allergies and dare to hope that the staff might prove helpful in knowing the ingredients in the dishes they serve, or that the kitchen might make an effort to meet your (pretty uncomplicated) needs, rather than treat you like a pariah. Also, while I noticed that many of the other patrons seemed to have friendly and attentive servers- we were not lucky enough to enjoy this kind of hospitality. I'm glad other reviewers had better experiences than we did, but we most certainly will not be going back, nor will any of our family or friends who reported similar experiences of their own. In keeping with the old nursery rhyme, "When it is good, it is very very good. But when it is bad, it is horrid" ...

After fourteen years of visiting The Dining Room, I can honestly say my wife and I have never been disappointed by our experience. Jane and Wave have established and maintained a masterful restaurant with great food and great people! No matter what you order, you will be happy you made the trip to The Dining Room!

Hard not to like this place. The crowning jewel in our driving tour of SW Wisconsin. Food and service were fantastic. Worth a trip if you're in southern Wisconsin!

Ditto to all the great comments. Do note if you are new to Monticello that the MAP IS WRONG! The map shows *South* Main and the Dining Room is on *North* Main, along the main business area, about a 2 block difference..

I would walk to Monticello from Madison for Chef Wave's sticky toffee pudding. It's that good. Make the pilgrimage. Taste for yourself. This is an awesome splurge-worthy gem of a restaurant. Chef Wave does some pretty amazing things. It's not your typical, overdone "fusion" for the sake of "fusion" cooking. He blends and layers flavor in really amazing ways. Our table shared the Wisconsin cheese bread with sauteed mushrooms and pickled roasted garlic (I hate mushrooms but really loved these) and the ginger & 5-spice pulled pork with Thai curry coconut sauce, cassava crackers and pickled ginger. My entree, the mahi mahi was served over rice with a similar Thai curry coconut sauce but with lemongrass and this amazing slaw that just took everything to the next level. The people I was eating with had the butterflied roasted shrimp with creamy Parmesan risotto, parsley shallot cream and roasted balsamic tomatoes and the pan seared halibut with fennel and orange shellfish broth, fingerling potatoes, fresh asparagus and basil oil. The presentation on all the dishes was beautiful but not at all fussy or silly. The food was allowed to "speak" for itself. I really appreciate that in a restaurant. No silly stacks of food or pointless garnishes. The staff was lovely and the weaving on display was really cool. I wish I knew more about wine (I don't drink) but the wine selection appeared to be extensive and suggestions were offered for each dish. I believe that they also offer a monthly wine tasting.

I've been coming to the Dining Room since it opened, and I think the sticky toffee pudding (along with the other food) is worth a pilgrimage from Illinois! I'm glad that the restaurant has stayed open all these years, because we know exactly where to go when we visit Green County. For anyone who loves creative food and professional service, the Dining Room is a "must eat" when you are in the area.
