I had been to Ottos a few years ago, before I became vegetarian. We needed a place to eat after a great morning shopping nearby and after a quick call to Ottos to determine what their menu contained- we headed over. Ottos Is dark inside - very black forest. But it is lively and fun. There is an outdoor eating patio, but we chose the bar so we wouldn't have to wait. I began with a Spaten optimator- an almost black dark beer from Germany. LOVED. IT. My friend got a hummus vegetarian wrap and I got the veggie flat bread. It was nice size- full of seasonal veggies, including 2 kinds of zucchini plus a yummy white sauce and cheese. Perfect balance. The flat bread was very tasty. I got a small side of potato salad- which was fine. The place was hopping, but the bartender and wait staff were cheerful and attentive. Very impressive! The whole bill was a bit over $20 so a good price For a yummy meal. Nice to have another good option for lunch in this nearby town.

New waiters really need better training. Epically bad service tonight; near perfect storm. Even my 12-year old son said, "if the food were cold, that would just about make it the worst ever." Also, while the flat brat tasted great, the rest of the menu was limited. Why not fish on the menu? I've had great fish in Bavaria, why not here where it is plentiful? Two stars for having Spaten and Hacker Pschorr on tap, but how about a proper weissbier glass? Frustrating.

I have been coming to Minocqua my entire life. My family now owns a log home that we frequent. Every time that I make it there I make it mandatory to get the German Nachos at Otto's. Food: I have not ordered something from their menu and not liked it. I crave their Otto's Brat when I haven't been around for a while. Service: First off, they've got a great staff! I never have a complaint about them. Second, it's hard to rate because the business of the place really depends on the time of year, they are closed for sometime during the slow seasons, and booming during summer when they have their BEAUTIFUL beer garden open which gives them MUCH more space. In the winter if it's busy it can be slightly crowded because their indoor seating is limited, but this too depends on when you go. You can get the full menu sitting at the bar, and they have large tables if you have a larger party. Decor: They are German, and it shows. Christmas time they are decorated with marvelous antique ornaments, all other times they have beer steins in lit glass boxes by each table. On the back of the menu you can read stories about various decorations such as the tapestries on the wall, the giant elk head above their wood burning fire place and many other things. You can also enjoy a game of shuffleboard out of the way of people in a quieter area with a few friends. It's a place to go for sure! You WILL NOT be disappointed with the German Nachos or the bratwurst. (Their pulled pork is good too!!) Side note, I've hear their night life is fun too, but have never experienced it. A few stories of dancing on tables have been rumored... But also a fun crowd to be around... completely different from the day scene. But ALWAYS fun!

Great service, great food, great atmosphere out in the beer garden. As good as we remembered.

We were seated on the outdoor patio right away on the busy 4th of July. All the brats we had were delicious. ok bloody mary, great beers and a good kids menu!

My friends all loved this place. I just wasn't feeling it though. I have a feeling I would have enjoyed myself here early in the night when it was quiet. I'm just over the loud crowded bars now. On a Saturday night they had a band playing. That seems to be every single bar on this street. Not my thing when trying to talk to people I'm with. The outdoor beer garden in the back actually looked lovely. It was almost empty so my friends wanted to stay inside by the action. The inside was PACKED. Its mostly men, so single ladies this may be where you want to hang. The bartenders were great and they have a decent (not great) selection of beer. I didn't get a chance to try any food here. Maybe next time. I'll just get here before the crowd does.

Nancy is the best! Kind and generous service with a great atmosphere! A can't-miss spot for your next visit.

If you come here during the winter and it's completely empty, don't let that fool you. This place is fantastic. While snowmobiling is big in Minocqua, winter is their offseason, so you won't see a lot of people around. Fine with me. We had the whole place to ourselves...for most of the time. The indoor area feels really spacious because of the high ceilings. They have awesome candelabra-like chandeliers and a giant elk thing hanging over a fireplace. Long wooden tables are the seating here, which is great for groups. We sat down at the smaller table and ordered some beer. They have a bunch of German-style beers on tap. We also ordered an appetizer of a pretzel which comes with mustard and cheese for a buck more. When in Wisconsin, cheese. Always cheese. The pretzel was piping hot when it arrived at our table, but the cheese staring back at me looked too good to wait, so I risked burning my mouth to get at that cheese. It was worth it. I have no regrets. Right after that came our dinner. My fiance and I both ordered brats, but I got the Otto's and he got the German style one. His was round and mine was flat. It looked like a sub almost. We both got potato salad. I'm not always a fan of brats, but this was cooked perfectly. I love char marks on my meat. Tastes better for some reason. After we devoured our food, we stayed a while and chilled while drinking some more beer. Some people started to make their way in. There were two drunken cougars that came stumbling in and ordered beer. They sat in front of the fireplace as they drank and requested that the bartender/waiter take selfies with them and he obliged. Even when the one woman knocked down her full beer everywhere (party foul), he cleaned it up and gave her another beer, no charge. That was really nice of him and he was also really great with us. Yeah we were the only ones there at the time, but he still gave us awesome service and I'm sure he would have done the same if it was super busy. They have a beer garden in the back, which is obviously closed in the winter, but I would love to come back in the summer and kick back and drink back there. More people should go to Otto's. It's a great find.

Sat for 15 minutes nobody ever came by the table so we lest oh well. Not even very busy!

We love Otto's! Minocqua has been a vacation spot for years and we always stop in for a Famous Brat and Beer! I always thought I didn't care much for Brats until I had their specialty! Now, I have to get one. Nancy Holtz the manager is awesome. We met her this trip and she was so friendly. She shared some interesting tid bits on the place. Can't wait to go back.

We stopped in on July 4, they were busy, but it was not insane. We sat at the bar and ordered an iced tea with two waters ... and waited ... and waited ... We ordered a brat and a soup/salad combo ... and waited ... and waited .... and waited. Not once did our server come over. After 30 minutes, we finally got our server's attention only to find out it was going to be ANOTHER 15 minutes before they even started preparing our food. Not once did anyone say it was going to be 45 minutes before even thinking about any food. We finally gave up and left. Looking through the menu, we thought the prices were higher even for a tourist trap style restaurant.

Warning -- the Men's bathroom is simply asking for a health inspection. I haven't gagged outside of a portable potty in probably 10 years. Flies swarming the urinal and for good reason. Yep, it's gross. The food -- well, after having been in Germany the week prior to patronizing this establishment I would say it's borderline, at-best, mediocre. By the way, the bowls of soup... ask for the other half when you see the pittance provided. The service is lacking any sense of organization. If you visit you will see why, otherwise skip and go to the Greek place a block down the road.
(1)Jake S.
Good stuff, love the atmosphere. Beer prices seemed on par with other bars downtown (which are still high but it's what you expect in a tourist area). Got some kind of chicken sandwich thing, it was pretty basic but not bad. The rest of the party ordered house brats and really enjoyed them. All in all, priced like a vacation spot should be but you're mainly buying atmosphere.
(4)Lexi S.
Poor service, I had people waiting next to me for 20 minutes.. messy bar all over. Rude staff. After I had waited for a glass of water for however long, I was told very rudely to never ask for one again. Not impressed.
(1)Rich D.
Service was average. Hamburger was good but why are all the burgers in the Northwoods 1/3 lb? I would expect them to be bigger up north. Overall not really impressed with the food but the atmosphere was good.

As you walk into this place, you are instantly aware that this is going to be a good German brat place. The floors, walls, and ceiling are all dark wood panels, with two huge beer-hall style chandeliers, and long bench-style seating for large groups of merry-drinkers. The walls are decorated with large steins and various other German paraphernalia. I've seen "Brat hausen" in places like Milwaukee with less authentic decor than this place. They had about a dozen tap offerings, including the staples like Spaten and its darker, maltier brother Spaten Optimater. The hot pretzel game with a few different kinds of mustard and for $1 extra a cup of cheese sauce. I knew I was in Wisconsin when I saw it because it was made with REAL cheese, not that crap that comes in a giant 5lb can. Worth the extra buck trust me. Brat was excellent and the sourkraut and german mustard was the perfect compliment. Get two if you plan on staying a while and enjoying some German beer and clanking steins with your friends. Can I comment on the other food? Nope because I came here for a brat (its a BRAT garden!) and so should you.

Ate here our last night in Minocqua. Fantastic service. It was pretty busy for a Tues night. At least in the beer garden where we were sitting. Our waitress, Sarah, was so great! Very knowledgeable about the menu, beers, specials. Had the Otto's Famous brat! Very yummy. Hubby had Pork Carnita sandwich. Also yummy! This place has it all...even a propeller inside the bar!
(5)Joanna T.
A little bit of Bavaria in Northern WI - Otto's was a lovely surprise on a beautiful July afternoon. The biergarten is perfect on a nice day - exactly like the biergartens we've enjoyed in Germany and Prague. There's Spaten on tap. There's the shuffleboard game people around here like so much. They've got a decent soft pretzel with really good cheese dip. Beers came quickly. What more can a girl want? I can't speak to evenings, or cold weather visits - but if it's a sunny afternoon and you're short on gemütlichkeit, Otto's will make it right for you.

Well I wish I'd had the experience you folks had, but instead, I had a meh bbq pork wrap for lunch at a German Biergarten. The lunch menu was sparse and sad and the only German thing on it was a brat. At our table we ordered my wrap, a chicken ceasar wrap, a Southwest Chicken sandwich and some burgers. Certainly no need to go to a German restaurant for those things. We all ordered our sandwiches with what the menu called "kettle chips" and then watched the chef open the bag of potato chips and throw them on our plates. Wah waaaah. We sat in back in the biergarten. The hostess asked if we wanted to sit in shade or sun - we said sun, she ignored us and sat us at the closest, fully-shaded table. Overall, the food was fine, I suppose, but nothing I'll be dying to have again and as we sat there and my companions told me about the place they wanted to go, but it had a line and we needed to get out of town, I was left even more upset by the sad menu at Otto's and longed for the food that could have been.

We have gone to Otto's occasionally for many years, and have generally enjoyed it, but I think I underestimated them. We recently had a large (100+ people) function there on a Friday night, including dinner and live music in the beautiful courtyard. Everything about it was absolutely first-rate. Bob Paul was very helpful in planning and executing the whole thing. In particular, Bob's menu suggestions were spot-on. The food--especially the brats, but also the burgers and the side dishes--was just great. Even the pickiest, most critical guest was effusive in his praise of the food! And the execution was flawless--plenty of food available, nicely presented, and little or no waiting at the bar. All in all: I give Otto's an A+.

Enjoyed dining outside on a beautiful August afternoon. Loved the sauerkraut nachos. The beer garden format is friendly at engages you to the othger patrons. Best Reuben I've had in Wisconsin. Service is sometimes intrusive but better than inattentiveness. Will certainly be back.
(4)Ginny L.
Vegetarians: they have Veggie Burgers. Strange but true. At least the did when we ate there Summer 2012. You can eat outside or in the cool, dark wood-paneled main hall.
(3)Billy K.
You can't ever go wrong with Otto's when you're in Minocqua. The most recent trip was during parents' weekend for most of the summer camps. The Melvins were playing and the parents were going CRAZY. Table dancing, beer drinking, head bopping good times. My friends and I grabbed a few pitchers and watched the entertainment. Probably not going to find that ever Friday night, but there's always an adventure to be had.
(4)Daniel M.
Freaking awesome! What better way to arrive in the Northwoods than to grab a brat and a beer on a private outdoor beer garden patio with live music, great service and awesome food? And if the weather isn't conducive to outdoor dining, the inside of the restaurant is very cool. Sit at a large booth or at the bar surrounded by old German beer steins. Check out the walls adorned with a giant buffalo head and some other interesting things. As for the food, I recommend the Spaten brat, the Cuban carnitas sandwich, and the portabella mushroom sandwich. And they make a killer burger!
(5)Denise L.
Great brats. Love the beer garden. Good service.
(4)Jan M.
Stopped in here for a beer after walking around Krazy Days awhile. Pluses...Spotted Cow on tap and the beer garden. Minuses...the almost $5 soft pretzel and kind of snippy waitress.
(3)Jessica S.
If you love German food, you'll love Otto's. Great beer, great brats and great sides. The atmosphere inside is authentic and inviting. Definitely worth the drive for lunch. I've never been here in the evening so I can't speak to the other review about cover charges, but there are none during the day!
(5)Shaq T.
Otto's is where it's at if you know what's up in Minocqua. Go at the right time and you might even get serenaded with sweet songs by a creepy local man who thinks he's Willie Nelson. Get dem black and tans.
(5)C L.
the service was slow. we had group of 12. two of us ordered salads and most of our table was done eating before the salads were brought out. food mediocre. horrible pretzel appetizer.
(1)Angela C.
Beautiful bar and outdoor beer garden. Cover charges are ridiculous, and unless you know the bartender be prepared to wait for your unfriendly service! If you must, go there in the day where you will find a quieter, more friendly atmosphere!
(1)Frances K.
Went to Otto's for lunch and sat outside in the beer garden. Service was friendly and efficient. Food (ate brats, of course) was really good including the German potato salad and kettle chips that are the side-dish options. Terrific beer selection.
(4)Brian H.
Otto's is the place to be especially if Brad Emanuel is playing on Thursdays and Sundays. It's festive atmosphere with people dancing on tables and a great beer garden in the back. Everyone is friendly and from all over the place. There is a cover of $3 on a friday night i went, but it didn't matter, it was awesome.
(5)Erica B.
Otto's is one of the best places to drink and dine in Minocqua. When I visit the city, I always hit up Otto's. At night, the live music creates the perfect scene. Everyone is friendly, social, and out to have a fun time. The large booths in the main room are beneficial for big groups of people. The beer garden in back is an added touch to this german bar. As an out-of-towner, I constantly look forward to the next time I can sip a cocktail on a warm summer evening at Otto's.
(4)Pamela I.
Not too impressed. Lots of smoke inside, I wouldn't have cared that much but I was pregnant. We went outside and there were lots of bugs, then it started raining. The food wasn't great and I couldn't drink beer, or I probably would have liked it better. Go to the Island Cafe to eat and come back for some beer.

One of the more negative experiences I've had in a bar. The German atmosphere and live music are about the only positives the bar has to offer. My previous experiences were mediocre, the music was enjoyable, but I have to believe that's because there were no underage girls laying on the bars with their dirty feet up by customer's food and drinks. The final straw for myself was my extraordinarily rude encounter with the manager, Chris. This guy had the class and work ethic of a drunken hillbilly and actually was so insanely rude I chose to leave the bar and dine at another establish. ( I had waited around seven minutes at the bar to put in a food order, and eventually got his attention to let him know I was there, which was followed by a rude and rather shocking response, basically in which he stated he was too busy and would get to me when he had time. Please bear in mind that while I was waiting, he was stacking shots on /flirting with a 19 year old girl. ) As a bar goer, I have very little standards, even a fan of dive bars, but this was just plain gross, unsanitary, trashy, and bursting at the seams with poor staff, management, and stereotypes one would normally try to avoid.
(1)Amy Z.
Otto's is best enjoyed in the daytime. You can sit out on the patio in the sun and work your way through their selection of reasonably priced beers. If it's chilly, the inside is nice too and full of Northwoods touches like mounted animals. It's a great place to pop into and have a beer after a long day of shopping or sunning. Avoid it at night when there is a cover charge, drunks dancing on tables, and a band so loud you have to shout to in order to converse with your friends.
(4)John D.
The brats are fantastic, the Spaten is really good, inside has a lot of nice steins and other German pieces on display. Outside has a really. REALLY nice beer garden. Really good food, a fun atmosphere.
(4)Otis L.
The best grub in Minocqua!! If you want pulled-pork nachos, mouth watering chicken sandwiches, and an array of beers, you have arrived! The staff is very friendly. They offer indoor and outdoor seating. There are other restaurants to choose from in Minocqua, but none are like Otto's. I love this place!
(5)D E.
Possibly the worst use of the nicest tavern in town. Pro's: Nice atmosphere, beer garden has cool old-world construction elements and accents, it's nice to sit outside. Cons: Ridiculous cover charges --often right up to the closing bell, appears to be chock-full of minors, automatic (as in mechanized) shot pouring devices, slow-moving bartenders. I can only really stand this place if it's slow, or I'm reasonably intoxicated. The beer garden is a nice touch, and I like the German atmosphere, but that's about it. On busy nights it's a popped-collar-camp-counselor douchey table-dancing nightmare. I believe they have been cited several times for serving minors and somehow have managed to keep their liquor license. I believe it is the nicest tavern facility in town, unfortunately it's another place I'm reluctant to reward with my money as it's poorly run. What a waste.
(2)Erik C.
The beer garden is a great summer thing, since there aren't any bugs to bother you. The selection of on tap beers is good, and has the (expected) German flair. Only bad thing is that when they live music kicks in it's WAY to loud. Doesn't matter what the band is, it's just too loud. I was all the way out in the beer garden and was finding it distracting. If looking for a conversation place w/drinks, check the live music schedule.
(4)Jeremy K.
The bar per townie ratio in Minocqua is surprisingly high. There's pratically one on every corner. Even some gas stations double as taverns. Best of the bunch is Otto's. They have a decent selection of beer on tap, checkers and shuffleboard, and a pleasant little beer garden out back. All this without that depressing smalltown bar feel. Just remember, in the Northwoods, those four stars are pretty relative.
(4)Michael E.
Now that I'm not a young, annoying binge drinker, I'm sort of annyoed by all of the young, annoying binge drinkers in here these days. Eh, what can you do? It's not that bad, I'm just kind of being an old fart about this whole thing. Otto's has nice big booths, decent beer on tap and usually pretty cool bartenders. The beer garden out back is great in the summer, which lasts all of a week and a half in Minocqua. I have to say I'm bummed that I didn't get a chance to play some shuffle puck. You forget how popular that 'sport' is in Wisconsin.
