Place is ok Food is good Bartender needs to wake up!! I waited 10 m for another drink they weren't even busy
(3)Rob A.
I've been here twice and I was a bit disappointed each time. The last time I was here it was very busy and the staff didn't seem to be efficiently seating people. Once we were seated our service wasn't very good. Our waitress wasn't very attentive and it took a while for us to order/get our food. One of the employees had friends/family seated at the restaurant and at one point she had some of their food, this didn't seem very professional. The food isn't anything more than your average bar food.

The best poutine I've ever had. It's because of the Red Dot that I will order poutine whenever I see it on a menu to compare (the next best poutine I've found is at Three Lions btw). I just love those hot fresh large fries covered in that wonderfully thick gravy and large melted gooey cheese curds... I only hope it is this good in its native homeland of Canada! Red Dot's fish fry is also incredible; it's my favorite fish fry in the city. I usually order it to go, as it get pretty crowded on a Friday night. The portions are large and the fish is of good quality. They offer regular cod fish fry, baked cod, perch, or bluegill. Their coleslaw is really good, and I normally try to avoid coleslaw. I love taking my out-of-town friends here because of the friendly atmosphere and great food (my friends have said their sandwiches/meals have always been delcious). They have a decent selection of beers, and drink prices are fair/competitive for the area. I'm not sure what it is about the decor but I just love it, especially the 3-peice photo they have above the bar. This is definitley the place to go if you are in the UWM/North Ave area and looking for some great food!

Our second time here. Waiting was not a problem despite it was very busy. Bartender & waitress very courteous and friendly. The food was excellent, homemade goodness, satisfying. Had the corn beef and it was deliciously blended with the dressing and tenderness of the meat --awesome. Poutine was very good although I was not a fan but now I am. Would like to come back and try brunch.

The Red Dot has a welcoming atmosphere unlike other spots in Milwaukee. Brunch is a true art form with selections including Egg's Benedict on a English muffin to French. This is paired nicely with a bloody Mary or Emergen-C drink orange juice and vodka. Can't say enough about the Poutine (French Canadian dish with french fries smothered in yummy gravy and cheddar cheese curds). Mix it up and try it with tator tots for a twist on this traditional item. I have going here for years and will continue to visit Red Dot because it does not disappoint.
(4)Debby O.
I've loved the Red Dot for years and especially enjoy living on the same block as it now. I head here at least once a week. Love the lay out - open enough space for a smaller bar. There's a lot of windows which I don't see often in bars here. There's an attached garage with extra booths and tables - especially nice on a sunny weekend morning for brunch. Enjoy the food - nothing spectacular but really good bar food for the price. I like the garlic bread as an app or getting the chicken strips tossed in buffalo sauce. I do wish they had guacamole here though (I'm pretty sure they don't...). My friends love the poutine. I really enjoy the steak and eggs with tater tots for brunch. Kitchen always closes at 10. Always a good selection of beer and hard ciders, liquor mixers are poured pretty strong. Like the owners, even if they come across a bit gruff. Nice atmosphere and good tvs that aren't overwhelming in case you want to keep an eye out for the score. Good specials - not listed on their website sadly though.
(4)Angie V.
Always weary when I come here because the quality of the food is inconsistent, but sometimes I just gotta have poutine so it's worth a gamble. Been here several times now and I never know what I'll get. My food was ice cold today, but the flavors were on. Guess it's a wash. The beer selection is above average and the service is always great, so I never leave unhappy -- although sometimes I wish I'd went somewhere else. Today included.
(3)Matthew T.
I like this place. A lot. I went here for the first time with a buddy, and we decided to order a pitcher of beer with our food. The waiter delivered us a full pitcher and two free pints to match. Sweet deal considering the pints wouldve costed us 4-5$ each. I ordered a burger and fries, which were both equally delicious. This place has a laid back vibe, good food, and pleasant employees. What's not to like?!
(5)David C.
Solid eatery in a rather quiet neighborhood of Milwaukee. We came here based on a recommendation from a native, and we weren't steered wrong. My wife had French toast with a side of tater tots with gravy and cheese, and I had scrambled egg, cheese, and tomato on buttered wheat toast. All very good. We started with biscuits and gravy, which we could have done without. They were pretty dry. All in all, a solid experience. Probably closer to 3.5 stars in actuality, but I rounded up for service.
(4)Danielle I.
Wonderful. I cant believe I have never been here before now! its a cozy atmosphere i loved the colors. the service was awesome she was so busy and she really owned it and was polite fast and just great. I had a delicious vegetable wrap it was awesome but not as awesome as those tater tots Yeah, i said it tater tots holy wow! :) and we got some free cheesecake and that was heavenly. I cant wait to go back to the Red Dot I know it will be soon. very soon. like now im going right now!

We went to the patio because it was a nice day and the inside was pretty loud. Walking back to the patio is kind of weird, you walk through a staff area and hallways. The patio itself is in an old garage, which is kind of cool, but a little different. We ordered the small poutine as an appetizer, and it was a good portion for two of us. Either of have never had poutine elsewhere, so we can't compare it, but it was what we expected, and a good amount of food for the price. He ordered The Hot Stuff burger and thought it was good. It was kind of messy, and really hot, but that is to be expected. I had the Chicken Cordon Bleu sandwich, I really liked it, the chicken was slightly over cooked, but I would order it again, and it was really messy to eat too. We both had the free fries that came with for a side. after eating, we realized we should have ordered poutine for one of our sides and fries for the other and shared, because it was too much food. He liked the beer selection and I had a couple of rum drinks 9I can't remember what it was called, but for $6 you get a huge glass of a mixture of 6 rums and fruit juice) it was awesome, just the perfect combination and not weak by any means either!
(4)Ellie B.
I like Red Dot. It's a cute place in a cute neighborhood. It's awesome that they have a vegetarian version of the poutine - it's good! They have a good brunch menu, too. Their drink menu is solid and they serve Moscow Mules in those awesome copper mugs.
(3)Janelle M.
I LOVE The Red Dot. Patio. Poutine. Prices. = ON POINT. Ahem. Anyhoo. Pros: Delicious food, amazing menu variety, good prices, great service, and it's cute. They have a decent happy hour. The poutine was awesome = the cheese was fresh and squeaky, the fries hot and crispy, and the gravy flavorful. *nom* I also recommend the grilled chicken wrap, but have 'em make it buffalo style. I heard they have a good fish fry, but haven't experienced it. My boyfriend got the wings and sucked the bones dry. So I guess they were pretty good. Cons: The beer itself is pretty much the same stuff you can get anywhere. I appreciate weird beer. That's about the only downfall I can think of. Do it.
(4)Briana J.
Fish was BEYOND GOOD!!! Blue Gill was good and lake perch!! They are not all you can eat but they give you enough to get full!! Side of poutine was good and the salads were just superb!!! Carrots broccoli and spinach!!! Wait staff was awesome!!
(5)Katharine M.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with sleeping off a good night at the Dot only to show up the next morning for poutine.
(4)Joshua S.
Come for the poutine. Shit is bananas. They actually make it the traditional way with gravy and fresh curds. The staff is incredibly friendly The cook is skilled and everything on her menu is worth a try. The McDot is a pretty great burger.
(4)Nicole E.
I've been here a few times and overall I like it. Service is hit or miss (we once had to ask for water about 5 times before we finally got it) but the bartenders have a slightly heavy touch when pouring, which is always a plus for me. Recommendations: chicken strips (SO good), McDot, BLT, ahi tuna sandwich, tater tots Avoid: I was not a fan of the fish fry. I've tried it twice (in case the first time was an off night). It is overly greasy and really bland. The batter had no flavor at all and both times it came out soggy. : (
(4)A E.
Neighborhood bar. Staff is friendly. Its relatively quiet and dark. Lots of regulars. Brunch food is good. Really good. Wish they had more tappers. Bottles of micro brews complement the tappers well.
(5)Fay S.
Great service and amazing drinks. I love the atmosphere and my guy and I have the best date nights here, topped of by the excellent poutine. The polynesian bbq sauce is amazing . The mozarella sticks and burgers are delicious. A real gem of a restaurant!
(5)Michael O.
The day after Halloween was rough, but what made it much better was a Bloody Mary and family size order of poutine from Red Dot. The Food: We started with poutine, and all I can say is WOW. I was skeptical, because normally I don't gravitate toward gravy, but Red Dots gravy is the best I have every had. I would have put it on everything. If you have tried the poutine at Miller Park, this is WAY better. I also had a Bloody and the Veggie Omelet. I love the options with the omelet, including tater-tots and fruit. After eating way too many fries with gravy, I opted for the fruit. The Omelet was large, and had a lot of veggies. The Blood had great flavor, and came with a pickle. My wife ordered a dish with a really good Hollandaise sauce and a perfectly poached egg. The breakfast burrito my friend had also looked really good, and the sausage links I tried were tastey. Everything we ordered was very reasonable, and I look forward to trying the rest of the menu. Service: We had a restaurant.com gift certificate, and our server gladly accepted it. She was very nice, and attentive. She was patient with our group, and she brought everything together, even after the last person arrived 10 mins after ordering. I like that! Patrons: I usually don't judge a place by its patrons, but this is worth mentioning. Our group started with four, but after a few more people made it it, we ended up with about 8. There was only a couple booths, a 4 person table open. A group of gentleman at another 4 person table, without being prompted, offered up their table. Very Cool! I will definitely go back, and I would recommend it to others. This place is definitely a hidden gem!
(4)Eva C.
Great food Great beer Great staff Great everything Need I say more? Well, one more thing: love the wings. Oh, and just one more thing: I went with a group of about 15 the last time I went and they were wonderfully accommodating. I called a few minutes ahead and they had tables pushed together for us and were great about the whole thing.

POUTINE? In the U.S.?! Unbelievable! I find myself talking to French Canadians rather often and all I hear is "Poutine this, Poutine that." I'll put this out there and say that I hate french fries. I hate gravy. I will avoid those two food items at all costs. So that is extremely ironic that I'm intrigued by the idea of french fries + gravy + cheese curds. If you've never had or heard of poutine, it's a Quebec specialty that is so incredibly bad for you but junk food heaven. Apparently, the Red Dot imports their fries and gravy from Quebec and then uses Wisconsin Cheese Curds, so it has that traditional French Canadian taste with a mix of Wisconsin. The party size is enough for 3-4 to share for $6.50 Aside from the Poutine craze... the bar/restaurant itself seems great. I would have liked to sit in the outdoor patio had it not been pouring. I came at 5pm on a Tuesday; it was empty, which means fast service. If you've never had poutine... you have to at least try it and this is the place to go instead of traveling across the border! Looks like they also have some good weekly food/drink specials - $1.50 tacos on Tuesdays, $1 sliders on Thursday, $4 pitchers on some night - I'll have to return to check those deals out.
(4)Sue W.
Big menu for a small neighborhood bar - even for my husband who does not eat meat. We tried the Red Dot with my daughter who lives in the neighborhood and will definitely be going back. Great, friendly service and really good food. Ciao Bella was a real taste treat. Canadian Special - looked like too much food but eaten (almost) up 'cause it was too good. Saturday night pizza special - cheap and delicious. Laid-back kind of place - nice change from the chain restaurants.
(5)Bartleby F.
I'm just a fan of this place in general. The chicken curry is an absolute dream! Decent week night food specials and reasonably priced drinks plus good music really add to the overall ambiance. They do show local sports or sports in general and have many weekday activities going on.
(4)James K.
My girlfriend was in the mood for a burger, and based on some positive reviews, we decided to go to The Red Dot, which is less than a block from our place. She was really ecstatic about the burger. We were pleasantly surprised that they use grass-fed, antibiotic free beef. It was cooked exactly as requested, and she loved the tater tots. I ordered one of the specials, a Sweet and Spicy Chicken with coconut rice with papaya and figs. At $12 including a house salad, this was a delicious grilled chicken dish, and a very good value. We noticed quite a few items that we wanted to try on future visits, and they have a wide range of special nights that vary. I'm very happy that my girlfriend is so happy with a place that is so close!
(4)Lisa A.
Everything was very good , bartender food and drinks , thanx ! Only minor thing the jerk chicken sand should have had some spice but was still tasty :)
(5)Max C.
I've always felt that this bar was a hidden treasure in Milwaukee. The location prevents it from becoming just another North Ave bar. Red Dot has a real personality. The staff is small enough that everyone seems to know eachother. Their drink selection is always unique and reasonably priced. The menu was recently revamped and has gone from good to amazing. ...poutine!
(5)Krystin F.
This is a a definitive neighborhood pub and oh how I wish it was my neighborhood that it calls home! The drinks here are good and strong and there is almost always something on special that sounds okay or better. The place is pretty small though so definitely expect a rush during food service hours (especially for Friday fish fry). Although the wait staff is extremely attentive despite the hoards of people that they have to mind. I've only had a couple of bites of the food here, but everything I've tried I've liked. Nothing was so outstanding that I would solely go back for it (yet) but if I find myself in the area with a hankering for a drink and dinner/lunch I would not think twice about hitting up the Red Dot again.
(4)Colden H.
I've had all kinds of great experiences at the Dot. It's one of my favorite places, and I love their poutine in an unholy way. Here's the rub: They allow smoking on the enclosed patio. The doors/windows are all closed because it's cold out, yet they still allow people to smoke there. How am I supposed to enjoy my evening of trivia knowing that I'm going to come home with a scratchy throat, watery eyes, and STANKY AS HELL clothes and hair? I am forced to sentence my devoted trivia team to a summer trivia league without the benefit of my prodigious intellect. And I am deprived of one of my favorite activities! This is crap, Red Dot. Smokers: have a heart and go outside to do your business--REAL outside, none of this enclosed patio shit.
(2)Thom H.
This place is my favorite "American" style restaurant on the East side. I think it gets overshadowed by Comet. The Red Dot beer, made locally, is amazing. I also very much enjoy the brunch. Poutine is tasty. Burgers are top notch. They also have a restauant.com coupon which is very reasonable.
(5)Stacie E.
The food can be hit or miss. Definitely try the poutine. It is delicious! I used to go here a lot more before they raised prices and now I just figured out how to make the same food at home.
(3)Steve P.
Poutine. Need I say any more?
(4)Lauren M.
This is a long over due review. I am obsessed with the fish fry here! I compare it to every other place I have eaten a Friday Fish Fry at and nothing has beaten it yet. The breading is great, the fish is so yummy, and the potato pancakes are the best. Plus, the service is wonderful. Every time I have been there the same blonde haired woman is my waitress and she is great and very attentive.
(5)Shane H.
I can't believe I haven't reviewed the Red Dot yet! I used to live a block away! Red Dot is wonderfully nestled in a quiet neighborhood between Oakland and the River, in an area I feel is often neglected. It is super-residential, so you don't count Red Dot on your bar crawl list, but it is a perfect place to go and have cheap drinks with friends, or get some pretty decent bar food. The Charlie Melt-- seared ahi tuna with wasabi aioli is a personal favorite. The poutine is pretty awesome too. I had one, just one, very bad experience here. As far as I know, it was an isolated incident, but just be aware that if you stop in during a busy dinner rush, you may wait for quite a while...for anything. All-in-all, a cozy local bar with friendly staff and good eats. And they usually play Simpsons on Sunday. Approve.
(4)Chris R.
Went here with a friend. Used to live down the street but never went. Service was excellent. Our server was funny and patient because we couldn't decide what to eat. One thing i was sure to eat and it was off the charts...POUTINE! Man i love that stuff and it was great. A side order was a tone i can't even fathom what the party size is. I would go here again easily.
(4)Erin B.
This place started out as a 2 star and wormed its way into my heart as a 4. Went there on a Saturday night for dinner and was greeted with "Hi! Just so you know, we're out of [about a million things]." OK. Great. So I opted for an ahi tuna sandwich because it seemed to be one of the only things they had available(with tater tots are you KIDDING me -- fan-freaking-tastic!). I had lowered expectations, but let me tell you, son...that was an awesome sammich! I'm not a huge fan of wasabi in general, but it was served with a side of wasabi mayo that was so good, I probably would have put it on pancakes if there was any left over. I was a disappointed when I was told they were out of Seagram's for my daily 7&7 (and if you know anything about me, you know that fucking with my whisk-ay isn't a good thing) but I was pleasantly surprised when the bartender magically found a bottle someplace and gave me my "medicine" on the house. I'm not sure where this mystery bottle came from, but I don't ask questions, I just say proper thanks to Our Lady of Jameson and call it a night.
(4)Chelsea O.
I came for brunch and it was great. It's tucked back in a quaint neighborhood and wasn't packed = bonus. I had the eggs benedict which was pretty good. Very affordable and laid back atmosphere with nice decor. I'll be back :)
(4)Nick K.
Poutine. That is all you need to know, go order this canadian delicacy shown to me by a friend. OH MY GOODNESS.
(5)Amy Z.
Red Dot is half a block down from my house, but it took me two years to love it. First time I went, I had to leave because my eyes were burning from smoke. But the smoking ban is upon us, and I finally gave it another chance. They have really solid sandwiches and great happy hour deals. The chicken sandwich and bacon cheeseburger are especially good. The poutine is interesting, but I confess to not understanding the fuss over it. The first few bites are good, but then the gravy makes the fries soggy. We go a lot for happy hour. $2.50 Milwaukee taps! That doesn't just mean Miller Lite like most bars. You can get a Lakefront or a Sprechers too. Combined with good sandwiches and friendly staff, Red Dot is quickly becoming our go-to Friday night spot.
(4)Jim W.
A lot of places try the "pub fare with a twist" concept, and for the most part those places fall flat on their face. Not here. The standards you have come to expect with an ever changing variety of new and interesting dishes plus an array of food and drink specials make this an excellent, cozy, neighborhood tavern. And yes, try the poutine.
(4)Chris A.
POUTINE!! French fries, gravy, and cheese...what's not to love?! Nice venue too.
(4)Sadie T.
drinks: decent selection, regular crowd, moderate prices food: nothing to write home about. Maybe it tastes better after a few drinks.
(3)Kristin R.
I almost don't want to write a review because I want to keep this place to myself, but this is one of my favorite bars to go to. Bartenders, drinks, and environment are awesome. It's definitely a more casual atmosphere--perfect for a few drinks if you got home from work late and discovered there's no beer in your fridge and it's after 9. I haven't eaten there as much, but I've had pleasant experiences those times I have.
(5)ryan h.
I just has Red Dot last weekend for Brunch. I have to tell you prior to going in I had had such a mixed array of reviews I was kind of thinking I was not going to enjoy myself. But, I did. As soon as I took my seat at the booth I felt like I belonged there. Specials on a giant chalk board: check. Sriracha on hand: check. Bloody Mary's : check. (god that check thing was getting annoying)... So as I was saying. I felt at home. I got a breakfast burrito and just because I wanted to see if food comas actually existed I got myself a small side of poutine. What is poutine you ask? Exactly what youd think: french fries smothered in gravy and cheese curds. Dont worry they are not fried cheese curds, this is the healthy version... Anyways. I enjoyed myself. Eat there.
(4)Lacey B.
This place is great. I've only been a few times, but every experience I've had has been exceptional. I always go for dinner as I'm not a "bar" person. On Wednesdays they have good deals on their pizzas, and as far as I'm concerned, their BBQ pizza is the best around. Service has always been friendly too. Also, the original reason we ever tried this place was for the Poutine. I'm from Canada originally, and I have been searching for Poutine in the states for years. Thankfully, it's (just recently) become a "cool thing" to have on your menu in the US. So more and more restaurants are serving it. But the Red Dot is one of the only places in Milwaukee. We went, we tried it, it was delicious. If you go to the Red Dot, get the Poutine!!!
(4)swordfish m.
Although I have not ventured deeper into the food menu, it should be noted that Red Dot is one of the few, if not the ONLY place in Milwaukee (and its neighboring suburbs) to serve POUTINE. For those unfamiliar with this surprisingly slept on (in the US) Canadian snack, it is a dish consisting of a bed of medium to thick cut french fries, atop are a healthy (or deadly, depending how you look at it) portion of cheese curds. The absolutely necessary finishing touch is the pouring of piping hot gravy above. In discussion, the concept alone may be enough to make some folks gag, but it truly is an amazing appetizer that pairs well with many beers and/or microbrews. Given our countries' reputation for glutonous eaters and meals high in calories and loaded with cholesterol, it comes as a major surprise that poutine hasn't caught on yet. And where better to enjoy this underappreciated appetizer than Red Dot; a comfortable, cozy neighborhood bar with a beer selection extensive enough to satisfy even the pickiest of drinkers. A very homely feel and kind staff/bartenders ensure you will have a positive experience. Can get busy at times so if you are uncomfortable with crowds, stick to weekdays.
(4)Mike G.
You wanna go where everybody knows your name I have a big soft spot for the Dot because it's my local unpretentious watering hole right down my side street, across from Tess. Johnny, Leah, Carol, Allen, and the other keepers are very friendly and Byl and Jeremy, the chefs, know their comfort food and have a great soup special week after week. They made a wild rice soup with a homemade turkey broth a few weeks ago that was to die for. Great East Side hangout.
(5)Amanda D.
I had brunch here yesterday and it was amazing. The eggs benedict were perfect and seriously, the poutine made me want to come back every weekend here after. The prices are totally affordable and the back patio is really nice. Everyone at my table was raving about their meals. So. Delicious. Great prices too!

The last stop on the #Birdy30 Tour and unfortunately a disappointment. When we were asking around about where we should go on our month long tour of chicken wings, more than a few people immediately suggested Red Dot. I had never been, so we added it to the list. The wings were just plain not good. And, not because we had been to some Great wing places over the month, but not good all by themselves. A few of the wings in our group appeared to be raw, and I was not happy at all with the temperature they were when they came out (which would probably explain why some of them were raw). Considering they should have just come out of hot oil, the wings should not have been room temperature. If we looked past the fact that they weren't cooked thoroughly it was apparent that it wasn't high quality chicken to start with. Luckily we all ordered the Poutine that made up for the bad experience with the wings. Although that seemed to be on the room temperature side as well. Cold fries, gravy and cheese curds aren't as scary as undercooked chicken though. I can't say I will be making a trip back to the Red Dot any time soon.
(2)Eric W.
Great standard bar but they have pretty decent food with different specials each day of the week. Definetly check it out
(4)Dee B.
I'll begin by saying that finding a place to eat in this area of Milwaukee at 3pm on a Sunday afternoon proved to be a challenge. There were at least 2 other places we stopped at first before my friends said - the Red Dot will only have bar food, but at least it's food! We are all famished at this point, and I would have eaten practically anything. My friends are big fans of the poutine. I'd never had it before, so we ordered a huge portion. Although I love both potatoes and cheese, I was underwhelmed by this dish -- it was too bland, too goopy, and just not that great. Luckily, I'd ordered a hamburger, and that was quite perfect and absolutely hit the spot. I loved the string onions, too. I was definitely reminded of the fact that Milwaukee is still a city of taverns in which drinking is accompanied by smoking. Luckily, with it being a beautiful August afternoon, there were not too many drinkers/smokers. Our waitress was super friendly, and that's always a plus. I agree with what Jen H said -- this place doesn't try too hard. And sometimes you just have bow your head in respect to the simple red-blooded American eating and drinking establishments that carry this country on their shoulders.
(3)Kelly T.
Tater tots are awesome, especially poutine-ized tots. Brunch was great, enjoyed by all. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that the bloody mary's aren't spectacular. They need a little work, but willing to deal with it because TOTS.
(4)Jill K.
Red Dot has changed (for the better) over the years. With new booths and tables, a new bar manager and new head chef, things are going up! As always there are weekday happy hour specials from 4-7 which include local draft beer & rail coctails, and they also have nightly drink specials from 10pm - close, which vary by night. Tuesday - Sunday have special food items. Every week starting Mondays there are weekly specials; an appetizer, soup, sandwich/salad, and entree. Depending on the success of each item then have the potential of being added permanently to the menu. The creator of all these specials is amazing in the kitchen. He concocts some amazing soups & flavors in the dishes. I haven't been to brunch here in quite a while now, but when I did go it was usually packed so be prepared to wait a while for your food, as the kitchen is small. All in all, Red Dot is a nice chill place to hang out. Good tunes and friendly bartenders make it a good place to relax after work or meet up with friends on the weekend.
(5)Matt A.
I don't know what this bar was like before, but for me Red Dot and Wolski's are two quintessential local taverns. For those not from Milwaukee or Wisconsin, you won't understand the concept of a tavern. Essentially an old house turned into a bar, this is where people drank before bar districts became popular. The beer menu does any Milwaukee establishment proud with its mixture of local craft brews and international flavor. We stopped here after the Lakefront tour to continue our drinking and were pleasantly surprised with the option to choose between New Glarus and Lakefront beers. Bar food is bar food. Except when you have the option of eating Poutine. The French Canadiens are onto something here that could definitely make Winters in the Upper Midwest more bearable. French fries, gravy and the Wisconsin staple of cheese curds combined with a hearty cow-centric beer in a local Tavern is my happy place when I'm stuck at work. Coming back later in the year for Summerfest, the nighttime atmosphere was pretty dead. By that time though, it was good to get away from the noise and drunkenness. Most of the people had migrated to Brady Street, I imagine. Huge points for heating up a freezer pizza after the kitchen had stopped serving food. Red Dot is a local Tavern that I like a lot.
(4)Phil M.
Love the red dot! Service is always good and servers seem like they really care. Food is very good. Good combination of variety, comfort, and quality. Buffalo chicken wrap is great, just enough heat. Homemade penne is very good and the tater tots rock. The red dot is the best corner bar & restaurant around.
(5)Maika M.
My husband and I went here on a Tuesday night. It was pretty dead, but the food was good. I ordered the Hot Stuff burger with fries ($10). It was delicious although it wasn't hot at all. We also had poutine which consists of french fries, topped with cheese curds and covered with gravy. This was my first poutine experience... The poutine was okay but I'm not a fan of it. My husband had the lasgna bolognese ($12) which was also good. Would definitely go back to try other things on the menu!

My fiance and I come here for Sunday brunch on occasion. My fiance loves the poutine and says it is the best he's ever had. The service is good and the place is cozy. It's low key and rather inexpensive. Overall, I would recommend the Red Dot

Tried Red Dot for the first time for brunch a little while ago and oh man what a great experience! If you're looking for sinfully delicious food to start your Sunday morning this is the spot! Delicious, and on top of that not too hard on the wallet :) Had a couple mimosas as well (it's 5 o'clock somewhere) so good! Nate is an awesome bartender as well! Try it, you will LOVE IT!

drink a moscow mule cram fried food in your face hole for dessert: poutine

Love the brunch!

Descriptive phrase: tasty pubgrub specials. Came to The Red Dot on a rainy Thursday night to find this hidden pub comfortably full. It's a nice space, like a cleaned-up old corner bar. Happy Hour til 7 got us our beers for $3, and their special that night was $0.50 wings. I opted for 6 BBQ and 6 Teriyaki, both of which I found meaty and nicely-drenched in the tangy sauces. I'd probably skip Teriyaki for their Bourbon sauce next time. Their authentic Poutine ($6 regular, enough for 4 people), with gravy brought in from Canada, was decadent and fatty goodness. Worth a quick stop in itself in my opinion. I liked The Red Dot a lot, and feel like it's one of those great neighborhood hangout spots Milwaukee is famous for. Keep on doing you.

Probably more of 3 1/2 stars. Stopped at the Red Dot for dinner on a Thursday night. The restaurant is kind of tucked away off of Oakland Ave. I ordered a 12 pack of wings (50¢ wing night on Thursdays) & some good ol tots. The wings were ok, nothing out of this world but satisfactory. My wife ordered the Poutine (fries, cheese curds & gravy) & it was delicious!

Red Dot.... red dot.... missed the spot..... I stopped at the location off of Oakland. Its very divey. Yea, didnt know that. Its kinda of dark, kinda of tavern like. They have drink and food specials for most days of the wee. Parking can be a pain, this I found out, even at happy hour time in the middle of the week. There are a couple of other bars or food spots with in the block. It is located directly across the street from Tess. I looked at the menu before ever stopping in. So i knew that there was food that I could eat. I settled on the cheese curds and chicken wings. I ordered some rum punch. The punch was awesome...what was to come was anything but awesome. The cheese curds didnt have the Wisconsin squeak that they are known for. I asked the waitress what type of cheese was in the curds she had no idea. The cheese was really sharp and bitter at the end. It left a taste or film on my tongue, I didnt appreciate this what so ever. The chicken wings were not good either. They are were dry/overcooked and they had no salt what so ever! It was like they didnt put any seasoning on the chicken. I guess the sauce was supposed to mask the non seasoning? I dont eat sauce so it was plain for me. This was a big no-no. Make sure that you get sauce on your wings. I didnt have a good time. I give this place two stars because the food came out quickly and the waitress was awesome. She kept asking if i wanted other food and she didnt want me to be hungry. I was really happy she was positive about the experience and i wasnt food shamed for not liking the food that i ordered.

Update! They also have good lunch and dinner. I've had a few sandwiches here including their Greek Chicken Pita (super!) and a burger (alright). Gluten free? You can ask for a GF bun at a slight extra charge. Cheese curds were decent, but not the best Milwaukee has to offer. However, you can still get tater tots with EVERYTHING. Beer selection doesn't rotate much. I'm sad I no longer live a block away.

Do NOT... Get nachos here. Problems: 1) the chip to toppings ratio was probably 4:1. (4 is for the chips) a shame 2) there was barely any cheese 3) the jalapeños were pickled not fresh 4) they forgot the meat 5) they brought a side of meat that was so overcooked and dry that it had black spots. It also had no seasoning. 6) they still charged me for this shit meat anyway 7) when I told the server about the disappointment in nacho toppings, I was told in regards to ordering the dish at all, and I fully quote, "THAT's NATURE OF NACHOS". I've had nachos many many times before. I assure this pierced face girl, it is indeed not "THE NATURE" of nachos. This experience was pretty terrible. I'd describe it as "dry". We only went here because I suggested it. That won't happen again. When you can't even make a simple dish such as nachos, that's pretty sad. I wouldn't recommend this place again. Should have stuck with the Ian's pizza idea. I wonder if they effed up the pizza they'd say "THAT's THE NATURE OF PIZZA". You know what I think? When I think of failed nachos? "THAT's THE NATURE OF SUCKING" "THAT's THE NATURE OF INCAPABILITY" And "THAT's THE NATURE OF A DAMN OVERLY HIP AND POPULAR LOCATION AND RIPPING PEOPLE OFF TRADING MONEY FOR INEXCUSABLE FOOD". It's no longer just the nachos that now bothers me... It's compounded that the Red Dot turned me into "that" person who's uses the all caps in a review. This is bad. Really bad. I wish I never walked in to the Red Dot! It's changed me as a person. My friend liked his steak sandwich. Although it was also dry. The theme of this place is DRY! I probably won't order nachos again for awhile after this. I'm traumatized. They are more known for poutine. But if you can't make anything but poutine then don't put anything else on the menu but poutine. Alright... I'm going to stop myself from writing anymore.

This is a cute little restaurant that is just among house. I have always enjoyed little restaurants. Our server was very nice, and attentive. We had an appetizer of cheese curds, and they came out fast. They also seemed to be a home made, instead of just coming from a plastic bag from a freezer. The meal itself was good too, but it did it awhile to come out. It was a darker lighting as well which some may prefer.
(4)Jeoff B.
I'm giving 1 star because negative numbers are not an option. Our waitress came to our table to ask how we were doing. When I asked for a beer, she pointed me to the bar and and told me I have to go get it myself. Unprovoked. Nice establishment.

Went for taco Tuesday. I've been here on other nights for regular food and overall I'd say its all pretty good. For a small place they have a decent sized menu and drink selection too. We started off with poutine. I just wanted fries as I'm not huge on gravy, but my bf wanted the whole shebang. Thankfully we had a wonderful server whom offered to put the gravy on half. We both got exactly what we wanted. As a non gravy-lover I will note that their gravy taste like French onion soup and is pretty thick... Take that tip and use it how you please. My one complaint: the chorizo taco was not good. I've had chorizo other places and usually like it, but not here. Something is just off. I also got a chicken taco, it was dry but okay flavor. The Tacos are very basic, and I wasn't a fan of the tomatoes they used as a topping and in the pico, I felt like they were sandwich/stew tomatoes vs. The ones typically used in Mexican dishes (yea i know, weird comment but its true!)

My wife had heard about Red Dot on the eastside and suggested we go on Friday for drinks and fish fry. Our favorite fish fry place was a Pub in Shorewood, unfortunately they closed. The Red Dot appearance is an old style tavern and it fit the neighborhood perfectly. We had the beer battered cod and perch fish fry with potato pancakes and clam chowder. The fish was very good, potato pancakes delicious, and the clam chowder - WOW best we ever had. It's not the typical clam chowder but if you like flavor try it. The chief came out to talk to us after the waitress told him we loved the clam chowder. He gave the credit to his cook - very classy. It looks like the Red Dot Eastside is our new Friday Fish Fry place. Thumbs up Gene & Eve

So I finally got around to checking this place out and I think I'm overall pretty happy. I do have one big complaint though, which I'll cover. Their menu is relatively eclectic and it seemed like there's probably something here for everyone. I was here for one main thing, though... That poutine. I mean, I know it's kinda hard to screw up fries, curds, and gravy, but there's a certain something that it's been difficult to find outside of Montreal. Maybe it's the consistency of the gravy, maybe it's the way the fries are cooked--I don't know--but I can honestly say that the poutine here rivals poutine I tried when I made a trip to Montreal a few years ago. On poutine, The Red Dot lives up to the hype. I had the Charlie Melt with tortilla chips. I was pretty satisfied with the sandwich, overall. The tuna steak was flavorful and juicy, not at all overcooked. So why three stars? I mean, up until now I've been nothing but positive about this place, right? My ladyfriend's burger: Sopping. With. Grease. She got the southwest burger. When she picked it up, the bottom bun was inedibly saturated with grease. She used several napkins to try and blot it up, but to no avail. She took a bite, and grease poured out onto the plate. That's just not acceptable. I would have no problem recommending this place for their poutine, but if this experience was any indication, I would avoid their burgers.

Poutine poutine poutine! Get it with tots instead of fries. This place has really good bar food. Like, I come here for food and not really to drink. The eggplant fries are pretty good, but could be a little crispier. As far as sandwiches go, I'm a fan of the BBQ Pork and the McDot, which is essentially a really great Big Mac that you can feel slightly less terrible about after eating. These come with a side, and you can upgrade it for $2 to poutine. They have an okay beer selection. If you're looking for good variety, I'd go somewhere else. I am pretty fond of their bloodies, and I typically opt for that. As far as service goes, I've experienced everything between excellent and okay, but nothing lower than okay, so that's a plus in my book. This place is pretty small and parking is a doozy. Plenty of TVs inside that usually have sports on (no complaints here). The patio is my favorite, weather permitting. Good vibe, nice twinkly lights, etc. There's a review on here from someone who had a really bad time with the nachos, and while I don't think they're that bad, I've had em once and have never felt compelled to get them again.

Great little local joint. How I have lived in Milwaukee for 8 months and had not even heard of this place which is 2 minutes from me is astounding. Great burger, maybe a little skimpy on the fries but very tasty nonetheless. Will most likely be back after I try the handful of other local MKE restaurants I have not been to yet.
(4)Melissa T.
Poutine was really good. In response to another review I saw- the gravy was probably from a can but that's kind of he point. It's poutine. Our curds melted perfectly and it was delicious. The burgers were great and came with a huge side of tots. The pickles were awesome. The peach cider on tap was like sweet nectar. Yum. Our server was excellent. Didn't come to the table too much or too little, remembered everything. I took one star off bc the whole place had a bar/puke/smoke stank, however, it is a bar, and once we started eating that was all forgotten. Normally I'd take off more Han one star for that but the food and service were really good.
(4)Laura A.
Great Friday fish fry and our waiter was friendly and attentive.

Red Dot is always a go-to and never fails to deliver great drinks, service, and of course grub. My favorite is the C-knot which consists of orange juice, Emergen-C, vodka. Favorite dishes are the Stub and the Hummus plate but everything is just plain good.
(5)Julie M.
What a great neighborhood hangout! Gravy- and cheese-lover that I am, I made a beeline here for the poutine. It was enjoyable in its own way, although I prefer a creamier gravy and sharper cheese. The real star of the show was the ribs. I wasn't expecting anything spectacular since it wasn't their specialty, but my dining companions ordered it anyway and boy am I glad they did! We got an entire rack of fall-off-the-bone ribs in a delicious BBQ sauce made with apple cider, plus two sides. More than enough food for the three of us. Even better? It only cost us $18. Long story short: came for the poutine, stayed for the ribs.

Just a follow-up to my original review...my boyfriend and I went last night around 7 to enjoy a drink and some food. The place was busy (could it be because of their special?) 50 cent wings and $1 something or another beef burger sliders. We got lucky and were seated within 2 minutes although we thought it might be longer. I decided to get the veggie burger that they were out of last review I did and added a side of poutine. I chose the Southwest Burger and it came out HUGE and was pretty darn good. I'll be eating the leftovers for lunch shortly :) The poutine was of course great as usual. My boyfriend got the hot wings and they for sure had a kick. Neighboring tables had ordered the sliders and they looked larger than most sliders I've seen. Seems like a good deal for the meat eaters. The cocktails got us buzzed so all in all, a decent experience. We even talked to our neighboring tables a little bit which is easy because of the cozy atmosphere. They've earned another star.

Stumbled upon the Red Dot when I moved a couple houses away about 2 years ago. I can not believe I hadn't heard of it before. A hidden gem in the east side of Milwaukee. The poutine is great and for their brunch the poached eggs over crab cakes is to die for. At night when it's just bar service is when I usually go and the nightly deals are always great. I love the rotating mix of artwork on the walls because it always gives you something to be excited to see. Now even if all of those things were to be stripped away I would STILL go for the amazing staff. Everyone is so friendly and kind. I went in there after getting off work one night by myself and the bartender was even kind enough to walk me home at close. Seriously some of the most amazing people work there.
(5)Natalie C.
Stopped here for a snack on a Sunday afternoon. John the bartender was attentive and the $5 appetizers were delicious. I'm going back for more meals
(3)Flavius C.
It's OK, for a neighborhood bar. Not a stand out in any way. The famous poutine was middling. Staff was good.

I really enjoyed my trip to Red Dot for a late lunch/early dinner on Sunday. I ordered two whisky and ginger beers (SO GOOD), and my friend and I each got a cup of soup and shared the vegetarian poutine. Now, I've never had poutine before, but this is how I feel about the poutine at Red Dot: the gravy was FANTASTIC. Seriously, it was so good that I could hardly believe it was vegetarian gravy. I have never liked gravy, but I really liked the gravy on the poutine at Red Dot. However, I will say that I was a little put off by the cheese curds. So, there were delicious, crispy fries, hot gravy, and cold cheese curds. The cheese curds did not melt and stayed relatively cold while we ate the poutine. I like cheese, but I didn't like the cheese curds. They felt oddly out of place on the poutine. I mean, they were cold while everything else was hot. It threw me for a loop. I liked my soup (curry soup of some sort), though, and I enjoyed my overall experience. I am looking forward to going back and trying their brunch at some point.

I decided to venture to Red Dot well because a friend chose it. Across the street from Tess (which is where I'd rather go) in the middle of a parking-spot-scarce-near-north-ave neighborhood, lies Red Dot. If you were just walking by, you'd think it's some dive bar. It's basically that. A little better set up though as there is a nice area with booths and tables for dining. Very low lit except for the tacky red light that borders the bar mirror. We sat at the bar, which apparently is code for "hey don't worry about asking us if we need menus" as we had to flag down the bartendress when we eventually got impatient enough to ask for them. I read online about the Buffalo Chicken Wrap, so that's what I was going for. Although this place is famous for "Poutine", I have no interest in soggy fries. So I ordered regualr fries. The buffalo chicken wrap was pretty good. The fries sucked and the ketchup had that nasty sweet taste that only comes from some subpar product not named Hunt's or Heinz. Their beer selection is ok but I was surprised when I ordered a second beer which was much different from the first, she decided to use the same glass - combining some of the flavor. I love Yelp and I have plenty confidence in the overall consensus on most places, but I have to chalk this up as a place that too many people think is unique or hipster enough to be good. Because it's not.
(2)Dian M.
First of all, their food are really good. I went there with my partner for brunch. I ordered sunny side up eggs with bacon and poutine on the side. My partner ordered the Stub. Both food were amazing. Their poutine is very delicious and the closest that I found in similarity with Montreal's poutine. My partner's the Stub was perfect. The Texas toast was crispy on the outside with nice buttery taste. The breakfast meat inside were also cooked to perfection. I also enjoyed their coffee, which was strong and delicious. But, I gave them three stars because I found a hair on my egg. Laying on top of my sunny side up was a short brown hair. The waitress was kind and replaced my food. Unfortunately it's a point docking for a delicious food experience.

This review is for brunch. Perhaps I should come back to give this place another chance at a different time of day. Five of us were dining, and three of us got cold food. Not like it-wasn't-quite-hot-because-it sat-too-long but cold cold. It doesn't matter how good it might taste, the coldness made it gross. The fourth diner got a burrito that had basically no ingredients in the tortilla. He hadn't made any requests so we weren't sure what happened there. He sent it back, and it was right the second time around. The fifth diner was happy with a large piping hot breakfast sandwich. FYI, the back area is considered outdoors (although it is covered), so you can smoke back there. For some that is a plus and others a minus.
(2)Adam N.
Good atmosphere here. Had a late Friday fish fry at the bar. Enjoyed the old tavern bar setup. The lake perch was tasty and filling, but a little pricey. This is my third trip here for food specials (Wednesday burgers, and Thursday 1$ sliders and 0.40$ wings). Haven't had an experience to keep me away yet.
(3)Ian F.
The beef roast was just OK. I didn't hate it and it deserves 3 stars. The vegetable medley it was served with was mush. I'd recommend staying away from the side salad. My friend had the 1.50 tacos (Tuesday) and said they are very good. Service was a (4) but in all the experience deserves a 3. Note: The outside patio is filthy.
(3)Krista L.
Decided to check this place out when house-hunting in the neighborhood. Let me start by saying that the drink prices and options are excellent. But A-OK is precisely the way to describe our food. Started with the poutine. I love, love poutine and have had it many times. This was not good poutine. The gravy was flavorless and the fries were not crispy. I wouldn't have it again. I got one of the specials -- a pork "po boy" of some sort. The meat was really good but it wasn't really a po boy. My husband got a burger and the meat was very low quality. It appeared to be a frozen patty that they defrosted and then cooked. It had not been hand-pattied. I would go back for the drinks and beer, but not for the food.

Want to wallow in self-pity all day on a Sunday after over-consuming delicious food for brunch? If so, come eat at the Red Dot. I enjoy the Red Dot for what it is....an old tavern on a quiet city block that attracts all walks of life. Case in point, the last time my girlfriend and I ate here, we saw: -Hipsters -Alt-emo with enough piercings to stock a Claire's -Really awesome people (that would be my gf and I) -And three older gentleman that quite possible had some "ties" to the old world (patent leather shoes, white slack, pinkie rings, and names like Joey, Johnny, and Salvatore) I would classify the brunch offerings as "solid". The star attraction at the Red Dot is the poutine. What is there not to like about the ever so filling combination of cheese curds, tator tots with some gravy poured over it? Top it with 2 eggs and you will reach nirvana. Pair it with some bloody marys and you guarantee yourself a mid morning nap. Come.Indulge..Leave satisfied.
(4)Matt O.
Red Dot is the place I must visit every time I come home for the holidays. What I would do for one of these in Brooklyn...
(5)Pauline J.
I went here based on the Yelp reviews and was not disappointed. I had their breakfast poutine and some sort of breakfast mixed drink that I don't remember the name of. I think it had something to do with Vitamin C. Either way, both were fantastic. It was easily some of the best poutine I've ever had. The staff was really nice. The service was quick. Only negative was the bathroom. The restaurant is obviously a remolded housed, but I guess I expected them to redo the bathroom. It was really dark and weird. It's not the biggest deal, it just sticks out in my memory. I really like trying new, small restaurants when traveling and I don't usually repeat, but I'll definitely be back to Red Dot when I'm in Milwaukee again and looking for a good breakfast.
(5)Michael R.
Why is the waitress so tall? I can't enjoy my food when the waitress is so tall. Tell her to stop being tall.
(3)Josh O.
Poutine first timer for me! Wow, was it delicious. I arrived during happy hour and enjoyed a few Booyah's with a bud. It was also 40 cent wing night and I ate the bbq and rootbeer flavors both of which were great. The restaurant itself was enjoyable to dine in and the service was quite friendly. I normally would put it as four stars but since I enjoyed my experience this much...5 stars it is! Get yo pooooutine
(5)Rachel F.
Red Dot = poutine and beer and food and this is definitely an old building and it's pretty okay but I'm still not in love and other people are and I'm not sure why I'm not in love b/c I should be but I'm not but it's a pretty freaking solid effort, that's for sure. I like it. Whew. Buffalo Chicken Wrap? Win. Poutine? Grossly awful for you, but win. Fairly priced, decent beer selection? Yet another win. Also, for the most part, great service. Maybe if I hung here more, or if I lived on the East Side, or if I went to trivia here, or whatever... I'd be in love. I've had both really good and somewhat bad experiences here. So middle of the road they go at a three, but really they're more of a 3.575. Three point five seven five? Wow. I'll stop and spare you any more, now.
(3)Jeff K.
Sometimes you just want a beer and some gravy and cheese fries (or poutine fries). Well you just found your spot. I could come here and just eat a plate of those fries. We also ordered the fried perch for the fish fry special and a burger. I enjoyed my fried perch as it was battered nicely. The burger was good but nothing special. But the star of the meal was the fries. Delicious. Overall, it seems like a nice neighborhood bar. It's cleaner than most so it's not a dive, but it isn't really a fancy gastropub either. Would definitely bring others to have the fries. The Fries.
(4)Kim A.
Very unique little restaurant. The food is creative and delicious and the location is quaint, amongst houses away from the main bar scene. They also have a lot of options for vegetarians which is great for going out with friends when everyone has different tastes. My only negative is that if you go during the week, there will likely be one waitress who has a lot of customers! So a little slow, but she still did a great job! Highly recommend this place.
(4)Gretel B.
Red Dot is so great for brunch. They make a delicious Bloody Mary guaranteed to cure any hangover. The poutine is a must, I personally like it best when made with tator tots instead fries. They have consistently great service and friendly staff.
(4)Amelia B.
Oh hi perfect neighborhood pub. Why must you be in Milwaukee and not Chicago? I happened to be at the Red Dot on Canada Day (what's that for again?), and lo and behold, I suppose the Red Dot is your "Canada" bar. Well, I mean, it serves poutine, and apparently on Canada Day, Molson. Of which I had neither (though don't get me wrong--I do love me some poutine). Yeah, this review is off to a rocky start. But what I did have was a big fatty skillet of eggs, potatoes, buttered toast, and a perfectly spicy Bloody Mary (complete with pickle spear) that was exactly what my hungover-self needed. Great specials and happy hours, good food, a big patio, and a laid back vibe with friendly bartenders? That's my kinda place.
(4)christina M.
What?? We went to Red Dot to get pizza and had to wait at the bar for a table. We were seated and the first thing the waitress tells us is that there is no more pizza being served. Couldn't they have told us that before we sat down? That's what we went for! I settled for the red dot club. There was barely any meat, the bacon was rubbery (not crispy how it should be), and the mayo was way over garlicky. Very disappointed.
(2)Rich T.
Absolute local gem. good happy hour 2.25 beers, 2.50 rail drinks. they do bar food here like you wouldn't believe. Wings include a very interesting root beer sauce, and the poutine is a true original. just found out they have a patio. it's really just a converted garage, but at least you get some nice fresh air if you don't get some sun.
(4)Erika B.
Bravo, Red Dot's waitress is finally rocking it. Too bad the big surly bartender is still a sourpuss.
(3)James C.
I've been going here for years. Consistently good food and great service. They have great nightly drink specials and a worthy happy hour. Some of the most friendly bartenders I've ever had the joy of dealing with. Their owner is always trying to make the place better and I don't think I could recommend a bar more. Make sure to look for the cute blonde with dreads when you go in.
(5)Marie H.
This place is pretty cool, because they don't try too hard (like other certain establishments in Milwaukee that might have 'red' in the name). I like the atmosphere, and the giant Quadrophenia painting on the wall serves as a reminder that good music used to be made, (damn emo kids, get off my lawn!). There are some fantastic food and drink specials, even on Friday night, and brunch is great if you can stand the smoke. The service here is not that great, but if you aren't in a hurry who cares? Plus, they have POUTINE!! Oh yeah, before I moved away, it looked like they were getting ready to build a pretty sweet looking patio. I look forward to returning when I am in town.
(4)Erika R.
I like this place. It has a chill vibe and the people who tend to go here are very friendly. Food is alright, I have yet to try the poutine but everyone raves about it. Barbacks are pretty nice too!
