Roast is good, not sure why I don't stop in more often. Atmosphere: unique wood sculptural elements warm the place, local art is featured on the walls seating is close quarters but not crammed. Food/drink: everything I have tried here from chai and latte to sandwiches and cookies had been good. Not stellar but certainly satisfying. Service: it is usually men of few words working here. Efficient and doing the job in a no nonsense kind of way. Overall, if you are looking to meet up with friends or do a little reading while sipping a drink, this is a good spot, no distracting yelling baristas or "seen scene" here.

I am from LA and I am visiting a friend in town, I have to say this coffee shop is pretty rad. The coffee is great and cheap. The food is excellent and must be names after someones favorite bands (Fatboy Slim and Janes Addiction) both really nice veggie sandwiches. Wireless is Free and there is a few lookers that trickle in the from the UWM. I will probably be posted up here in the AM throughout the weekend, come say hi.

Great coffee shop, with room to relax.

This is some mighty good stuff. Although I don't come here very regularly (I live in Chicago now), I've been here enough to have an opinion, I think. Their coffee's not bad and I find it amusing that their coffee drinks and food are named after band names. The bathroom wasn't great, but what jacks the rating of this place up to 5 stars is the salad. Man, oh man! The basil vinaigrette drenching this baby was simply divine! It's easily my favorite salad in the city. Get the Modest Mouse with cashews (if you're a vegetarian, otherwise get the salad with chicken as it already comes with cashews). It's fan-tast-ic! Mmmm...basil vinaigrette...

Great little shop. the coffee's nice, and i like the feel of the place as a whole. what sets it apart is the staff. there's always someone real cool behind the counter who's willing to chat a bit or at least ask you how your day's going. there's really a lot to be said for good service, and roast delivers.
(4)Tony J.
Been here a couple times over the years & just went here this week for a bagel. Small & can be hard to find a spot inside. Interior is very unique & cool. Not sure about their coffee yet. But they make some pretty good bagels & lunch items. I will be going back again. Prices seem very reasonable. Workers are always very nice & cool. You just can't go wrong here, I dig places like that.
(4)Trice E.
It was my first time there and I'll be a regular. It's a really calm and warm environment. Staff as well as patrons were very nice. My vanilla latte was better than my usual Starbuck's skinny vanilla latte.. However I can't wait to try the raspberry truffle latte that everyone talks about... Hmmm... See ya tomorrow...
(4)Terry M.
Best neighborhood coffee house on the Eastside. Ryan and his crew see me locking up my bike and have my coffee ready by the time I get inside. Street parking easily found within a block, and right on bus lines (22,40U,60, & Green line - aka old 10 route). Nice outdoor patio to chill on, great food, subtle music for mood, and of course great coffee! Bonus: lots of power outlets and WiFi.

I live a few blocks away. I have lived at this location for about a year now and have visited just about every coffee shop in town.. BUT Roast Coffee Company. So, I walked down and decided to give them a shot! I think I arrived at Roast Coffee around 10:30 on a HOT summer day. When I arrived, there was a line of about 5-6 people, waiting to order. The worst part of it all was there was only one dude working... Taking orders, making drinks, making the food, and all at the same time trying to deal with a shipment of STUFF that he had to roll in himself while we all were standing in line waiting... It was chaos. It took 20 minutes to order. I actually really felt for him, because he was working his ass off. On a positive note, Roast Coffee Company carries Anodyne coffee. The greatest coffee in the history of history. The drip brewed coffee tastes exactly the same as at both Anodyne locations. +1 for Consistency! And for being in such an awful spot, the barista was really friendly and offered us a punch card. The bakery looked old, so we decided to pass. To touch back on the "waiting in line" incident, I hope RCC has a few more people working during the school year or I can see people leaving to go to nearby Starbucks. & that would be awful because as most coffee snobs know, Starbae is everything that is wrong in the coffee world. I will be back, especially if I am in a morning rush, and unable to make my coffee for the school day. And of course, will update my review, once I have.
(3)Danny T.
I like this place. It's a little off the beaten path, and that's a good thing. The staff seems to consist of about 3 people who more or less do it all. You're not going to get bang-bang, in and out, rapid corporate coffeeshop service, but what you will get is a personal experience, friendly staff that will get to know you, and fucking amazing, perfectly brewed Anodyne (MKE local) coffee, expertly-prepared espresso drinks, and great breakfast/lunch sandwiches. Oh yeah, and music that will pick up your mood even before the caffeine hits your lips.
(4)Caroline P.
The overwhelming smell of patchouli greets you as you walk in the front door. Local art on the walls and some ironically handmade counters decorate the place. The place screams, "I bike places." The good news is they actually have almond milk as an option.
(3)Roz K.
It's an alright coffee shop -- They make a decent dirty chai and their hot chocolate is pretty good. However, I can't really stand the place too much due to the loud weird hipster music (which was overkill) and the band name based sandwiches and drinks (more overkill and weirds me out). The place seems very packed on weekends making it a very uncomfortable place to study. The baristas I've had seem a bit apathetic or just a tad unresponsive for the most part. The lighting's also a bit too dim for my tastes. I really would give this place two stars, except my drink comes out quick and once that's out of the way, it's all good.
(3)Lacey P.
Well...they don't have anything gluten free. Almost nothing. So I got a salad. And it was huge, and good, and it's right next door to that bookstore that has zines. So yeah, it was ok.
(3)Allie T.
Really cute corner coffee shop. I loved the coffee and food selection. The guy working there was really friendly too. Would totally make the walk to go back there.
(5)Ann C.
I love roast. It is a small neighborhood coffee shop. The atmosphere is on point, good & quirky, but not trying to hard to be something it isn't. There are literally outlets everywhere, so if you need to get work done at the shop, you can easily plug in. The coffee is great, there are a lot of options to fullfil your special needs and the breakfast bagel sandwiches live in my dreams, delicious.
(5)Mary K.
This has been my go-to coffee shop in Milwaukee for a solid 5 years now. All of the hand crafted drinks are creative and quite tasty! I usually have a hard time deciding what I want when I get there because there are so many tasty options. In the end I always end up getting one of my usuals because it's so good I can't venture to try something else! Favorite drinks: white chocolate chai w/espresso and iced mint condition which is a mint mocha with house made chocolate syrup. NOM! I'm a mint mocha freak and there is something about the chocolate syrup they make that is just so different in the best way possible! The food here is amazing! You HAVE to try the arcade fire bagel or the radio head (both breakfast bagels). They're to die for! The yogurt parfait is better than any that i've made.. I need to know what kind of granola they use because IT'S TOO GOOD. The interior design there is awesome. Great high seating by the windows. Perfect for people watching in the morning ;) They always have a local artists work up for sale. Usually very unique and interesting work! Naturally I've gotten to know some of the employees and they're all great characters! Oh and they KNOW how to make their coffee that's for sure. The owner Ryan is an awesome guy. Very funny and always smiling! What a great atmosphere. Kudos to the Roast!!
(5)Angela A.
Out of all the coffee shops visited in MKE, this was my least favorite. I was there on a Sunday afternoon. There was only one employee, and he was very busy. I wasn't in a rush, but one would have been frustrated if they were. Coffee was good, space for chatting and working, and looked like the menu was good, although I didn't eat. I probably wouldn't go back but good in a pinch!
(3)Kim K.
Roast serves up the best coffee drinks in Milwaukee! Perfection every time. The environment is warm and super friendly. Ryan and staff are always fun and entertaining, we are so thankful to have Roast in the neighborhood!!! And on our daily route. Food hits the spot but the coffee helps me survive. Go to roast! Try the crack head, euro Cappa or raspberry truffle.
(5)Dean L.
Great coffee, great breakfast, great atmosphere....what else can you ask for? Glad I stopped in to check this place out. Too bad I'm from out of town. Just want to add that you can't use a credit card under $5.
(4)Jeremy P.
Bagel sandwich (arcade fire I think?) and chips are off the charts! :) :) :)
(5)Jim S.
Good coffee, great lattes, can't speak to the food. The lines were a little longer than competitors.
(3)Pete J.
Excellent espresso, made with care from Anodyne beans, served in a clear demitasse with a spoon. Excellent. Just the right amount of crema. The coffee shop has one wall and part of a counter decorated with recycled wood, very interesting. The entire valence/ light above the counter is really interesting. Today, there were pictures on the wall. framed, for sale, taken by Wisconsinite Abraham Louis Clark during his self-supported 2960 mile coast to coast run. They also had Clark's book, "Running Water" for sale. Very cool. The service was superb. The lady who waited on me was working alone, made one espresso which wasn't to her liking, dumped this out, made another. Very mindful. There are a number of food entrees. The BLT I had (hold the bacon, add extra tomatoes) was good. Really nice shop, really good espresso. Highly recommend.

I am so happy I went here! I was on a trip from california and staying with a friend in Milwaukee, and woke up with a hankering for some good espresso. I saw that Roast was right down the street so I stopped in. I walked in and knew that if I lived here, I would be at Roast every day. The atmosphere was so pleasant- I was warmly welcomed by a bearded barista, and browsed the artwork that apparently changes every so often. The decorations basically looked like a good urban outfitters display. I thought I should also mention the women's bathroom which features a superb color palette. I got a shot of espresso and a regular brewed coffee. The espresso was a little bit pricey, but so delicious. I have never heard of this "Anodyne," but I guess it's local and that's what they serve and I loved it. The brewed coffee was super as well, and had a very robust and non-bitter flavor. No creamer necessary. This was not as pricey. The friend that I was with said that their specialty drinks are delicious as well. She recommends the April in Paris drink. It seemed quiet to me, but I'm pretty sure that school was not in session. In the state that I saw it, it would be a great place to study. In summary, so good. You should go there.
(5)Colin U.
This is a nice little place right on Maryland and Locust. It's a generally quite place other than when they have a little live music now and then. Pretty good prices on things but it is annoying that there is a credit card limit. No other coffee shops have that in the area. All-in-All a nice place to settle down and get some homework done while enjoying a warm cup of coffee. Oh and free Wi-Fi is always nice even though you have to grab a little card with a code on it ever 1 hour.
(4)Elizabeth H.
5 Stars, right off the bat! I have spent SO much time in Roast. It was the place I did homework daily during my undergrad. I wrote my thesis for my Master's there. I lived there, literally. I pretty much owe all of my good grades from hours of studying to Roast. The owner is awesome. We always talk music. He even let me hook my laptop up to his external hard drive to extract whatever tunes I wanted. So cool. He takes a lot of pride in his coffee, especially his iced coffee. I guess it's pretty special and takes hours to brew. Hands down, they make the best honey latte around. Good people, good coffee, good food, good art, good music, free wifi, comfortable atmosphere. I like, I like, I like. AND the cherry oat muffins are vegan! YUM!
(5)Lizz Z.
My new favorite coffee shop and I'm an Alterra junkie! I discovered it this past Saturday when doing a scavenger hunt with friends. One of the tasks was to get a barista to teach you how to make a latte. After getting kicked out of Bux, we went here. The barista could not have been nicer! Or a better teacher! He did not blink an eye when we explained the task and made us a delicious, gorgeous, well-balanced latte. We all plan to go back. Support this place!!!!
(5)Tim T.
Great small shop. Stellar vibe. Ryan (the owner) is laid back and into his craft. Sandwich was great. Had both a commercial drip and a pourover off a V60. Both brews were dialed in well. Serving up a choice Milwaukee (Bay View) roaster: Anodyne.
(5)Alison C.
This coffee shop is a gem and really strengthens the neighborhood. There are family regulars, students, professors from UWM, Peck and many artists. The art displayed is always quality and changes frequently. The homegrown touches to the interior architecture make the shop completely one of a kind. The light sculpture that hugs the ceiling is stunning. Great coffee, tea, food, people and space. Wouldn't change a thing and I always bring out-of-towners here.
(5)Gregory J.
I'm an old timer around the old Roast Corral. Pretty much every day begins with a stroll over to the shop for a carafe of excellent black coffee. I can't speak for the various fancy drinks my wife gets, but I can say that a day without Roast is either a holiday or a day in some other city. I go for the coffee, the coffee is great. What more needs saying?
(5)Andrea K.
Roast is my "go to" stop MANY mornings on my way to work. For someone who did not drink coffee for years I cannot get enough! The staff and owner are friendly and accommodating every visit. I am a firm believer in supporting local shops and this is one that in my opinion cannot be beat. Highly recommend:)

Roast Coffee Company takes me back 20 years to Rue de la Course on Magazine Street in New Orleans. And YES! Rue is reviewed on YELP! So check it out if you're heading to the Big Easy. Okay, so ROAST hasn't got the history of the Garden District, or the New Orleans 'Je ne sais crois' but it's a college coffee shop with great coffee, tea, and chai; sandwiches named after alternative bands: my favorite is Radio Head (sans tomatoes) cucumber and dill cream cheese on a bagels or ciabatta. Local art is for sale on the walls and the hipster music is great. When it's over-the-top, wear your ear pods --you know you carry them everywhere! Local young crowd, friendly service (they bring your food to your table--with a big smile behind dredlocks). Finally: Comfortable seating, accessible outlets, free Wifi with purchase. I love Roast and so will you!
(5)Danielle B.
Roast serves the best coffee in the city. Hands down. That said, they are serving beans roasted by Anodyne, but in my opinion, they handle the beans better at Roast. Ryan, the owner, clearly cares a lot about what he does and about his customers. Regardless of whether you're a regular or a first-time visitor, the staff at Roast is always friendly and welcoming... and NEVER snobbish which is a big deal for me. They are extremely well-informed and truly care about serving amazing coffee, so if you'd like to talk beans, they're more than happy to do so. If you just want to get your mocha and go, that's fine too. It's a perfect balance. So I'm a flavored latte-drinker, and the flavor combinations at Roast, combined with the expert skill of the baristas (especially Ryan), combined with the best equipment and ingredients make for amazing lattes. I've tried every flavor, and they're all good. And guess what else? They serve delicious food! Can it get any better? I think not. Perfect coffee, yummy sandwiches, wonderful employees... are you on your way right now?

Número UNO in Milwaukee. Great service, outstanding sandwiches, excellent coffee...and good people. Ask for the QuarterHorse drink or TV Land sandwich--you won't be disappointed. Update 2014: Roast is still "money"! The new Wild Bird sandwich ranks up there with my all-time favorites anywhere. Multiple coffee/brewing choices, a congenial owner-host, knowledgeable and friendly baristas, and a laid back vibe all add up to a coffee shop-cafe well worth traveling to again and again.
(5)Nina F.
I love this place! I go here a lot...maybe even too much, but I can never get enough. My favorite thing about it is the consistency. I've never had a drink taste not quite the same, or not as good as usual. Delicious every time. The staff is always super friendly and down to earth, great atmosphere too.
(5)Tanner J.
Roast easily has some of the best coffee (and espresso) in Milwaukee. The baristas are all incredibly knowledgeable and usually can answer your coffee questions off the top of their heads. You can taste that Ryan (the owner) clearly cares about how his coffee is made. He makes sure that everything that is made is top notch. You'll never get burned or stale coffee here. The food menu is great for lunch and their drink list is impressive. Great music and a fun atmosphere makes this coffee shop among the best in Milwaukee, and is well worth a trip to the Eastside.

First visit here and I really try to have a few visits in before writing reviews unless I am traveling, but I feel a need to talk about really good local businesses. I had to stop in and try the Anodyne coffee. Collectivo (served) and Starbucks stores everywhere, I enjoy coffee and had to see what this was all about. First I tried their coffee of the day. Guatemala San Pedro. Nice smooth medium roast from what I can tell. Not too bitter. Then I tried one of their specialty coffees, Caramel Cosmo, Ghirardelli caramel Latte. Again, seems to be a medium roast coffee, smooth with just the right caramel flavor. I love the location. Right down from UW-Milwaukee and mixed with students, professionals and residence. It is a neighborhood shop and it is great to see businesses like this. First impression when you walk in is, "wow, cool decor and ambiance. Reminds me of Soho but the homes of Milwaukee. I love the decor and the wood slatted walls on one side and the lighting above the serving area with a local artist displayed on the walls. I've been sitting here for an hour and a half and the music has been a great eclectic variety and I feel no need to pull out my iPhone...jazz, contemporary, hard rock to various forms of alternative. From The Offspring to a symphony version of Star Wars...is that cool? Cudos to the person creating this playlist. I noticed electrical plugs along all the seating around the perimeter. How many places do you go to and can't find ample electrical sources? Makes you want to sit here and keep drinking! Not too loud and a constant flow of people has been fun for those who like to people watch. A short drive north of Collectivo and Starbucks or for those in the suburbs, it is worth a drive to experience something different in a coffee house. The Anodyne coffee so far is good...not the really bold flavor variety you can get at a Starbucks (at least from two different coffees I've had) but it is good. The atmosphere is worth the visit alone. Question of the day to those who read this (reply with a comment). Which do you prefer, Anodyn, Collectivo, Starbucks or Dunkin donut coffee and why?
(4)Isabelle M.
I want to like Roast really, really badly. The drink menu is really solid, it's a good space, I'm pretty sure my next drink is free... but something about it just doesn't come off right. First of all I can not get over the price. MKE coffee in general seems expensive to me (even coming from San Francisco) but Roast's is pretty ridiculous. About $4 for any kind of espresso beverage. Secondly, the drinks are never, ever hot enough, they always taste lukewarm. This is partly my fault because I drink my coffee really slowly so if it starts off lukewarm like Roast's, it ends up stone cold by the time I finish. The space is decent, but the back table is always reserved for staff. This leaves pretty much every other seating next to the door which makes you pretty cold when everyone opens the door to come in or out. Still, it can be cozy in there, and it's fun to people watch. I used to go very often because it was right across the street from my house. I go less frequently now and will probably only stop by to get that free drink (punch card is a plus!) Overall: not bad, but am underwhelmed.
(3)Steve W.
Probably one of my favorite coffee shops in milwaukee. If you may, please enjoy the Arcade Fire for breakfast next time you are there. I think you'll like it.
(4)Adam W.
His has a very good vibe to it. The whole inside is wooden and has a modern feel to it. Love it because it's a local shop and the coffee is better than the coffee chains. Recommended
(4)Alyssa R.
Roast is the best place in the city to get coffee. The atmosphere there is really relaxed and laid back as well as the Baristas. Everyone is very friendly and very caring about what they do. They take the time to make everything perfect and delicious. If you are ever in need of great coffee and a great atmosphere, Roast is your destination.
(5)Baltina H.
Having been a regular at Roast for the last 3 years, I would have to say that I am more than a fan. Roast is where I come to study, hangout, & just relax. The enviroment is relaxing, and I find the music selection to be good overall. The staff is friendly and they all make an excellent drink. Since Roast started making food, the quality & speed have always been great. If you live on or near the east side or are driving by, it is worth stopping in & having a cup of coffee or one of there other great coffee/ non- coffee drinks. My personal favorite is the americano - misto. Hope you enjoy Roast as much as I do.
(5)Joe F.
Roast is great! Each time I'm in the neighborhood I stop in for cup. They make some crazy iced coffee drink that has enough kick to wake the dead! Try one and you'll see through time and space j/k :) The cinnamon roll kicks ass too. Their staff is always friendly. Roast is a great neighborhood coffee shop.
(5)T M.
Best cafe in the Midwest, probably top ten in America.
(5)Eric N.
Iced coffee was good. Only one visit here, but a nice experince, and worth a second look.
(3)Beth P.
Without poking around on the Yelp app's "monocle" (augmented reality -- check it Yelpers), I wouldn't have known this shop existed. Sad because it is the closest coffee shop to my house. They serve Anodyne coffee and whip up a yummy chai latte. Some of the employees are hilarious! It's welcome change from my typical work-from-home Friday. The sandwiches are good. I wasn't a huge fan of the bread used for their panini sandwiches, but the veggie sandwich I got another time was solid.
(5)Maggie M.
My favorite part about this coffee shop is the super friendly baristas. They always seem to be hanging out for their own satisfaction rather than working. The laid back vibe of The Roast is refreshing compared to the normal fast-paced hustle and bustle of other coffee shops. I like to think that the calmness with which the baristas prepare the drinks seem into them and transfer to me. On a different note, the bagels here are unlike any other bagel I've ever tried, and I really really like them. They seem like maybe they're homemade.
(5)Melissa L.
My boyfriend just brought me back my regular summer coffee drink: an iced latte (preferably with almond milk). This is the best latte I've ever had in my life. The espresso is delicious and the almond milk is awesome as well. Something so simple only tastes this good when it's made right with quality ingredients. Oh, and my boyfriend did mention that the service was above average and the batista was the nicest he's ever had.
(5)Damien D.
Just moved back from Seattle and I am a coffee snob. Thank goodness for ROAST! The knowledge that Ryan and his crew have concerning coffee is on par with any Seattle cafe. The cafe itself is a work of art with exposed cream city brick on one wall and creatively layered and recovered wood on the other wall. The light fixture above the wall is amazing and the rotating art is always above average. The outside patio is a great place to sit back, relax and watch the students and neighbors meandering the east side. Plus, the music is almost always on point. The service is great and the coffee is tasty. Roast also fulfills my #1 requirement for a coffee shop in the summer TODDY! Mmmmm, liquid gold! I appreciate the use of local, artisanal Anodyne coffee. Nothing against the other "A" in Milwaukee coffee, but they seem a bit too big for their britches. When I told folks that I was moving back to Milwaukee, folks would let their perceptions about it being a coffee wasteland fly. Nothing could be further from the truth and Roast contributes to the solid and building coffee culture that exists in Brew City!
(4)Matt B.
One bagel to go but no knife to spread cream cheese I still love you guys
(5)Rachel F.
I really like Roast, a lot. It may be densely populated with UWMers, but this is still probably my favorite coffee shop in MKE. I don't visit nearly enough. That will all change when it gets warm, as I could walk there, but parking is a beey-otch. Why is Roast my favorite, you may ask? (Or you may not, but then you wouldn't be reading, now would you...) 1. They carry Anodyne coffee/espresso, it's available for purchase by the pound, too. And we all know Anodyne is AWESOME. 2. They have great food, and yes, menu items are named after bands. I kind of like this. C. Rotating wall art is always interesting and thought-provoking, not just something someone threw up there. D. They carry Rishi Tea, too! (Jasmine Pearl, what up!?!?) 5. The people that work there will smile at you and are nice and stuff. Roast is a true independent coffee shop, and it adds quite a bit to the Milwaukee landscape. Yay! I *am* a fan.
(4)Jessica T.
This is definitely one of my favorite coffee shops in the city. During my freshman year at UWM I was looking for a place close to campus that I could get out of the dorms and get studying and homework done and this was the perfect spot to do so. Even though I have my own apartment off campus now, I still like to come here to get course work done. I love the vibe of this place and there is always interesting art on the walls and great tunes playing. All of the baristas are always kind and willing to give you suggestions or explain things to you and the drinks are always spot on. I've honestly never had a bad beverage from this place. I highly recommend their iced coffee, it really hits the spot during the warmer summer months. I also like their sandwich and wrap menu, they are usually pretty generous with the veggie toppings on the sandwich which is awesome! Come to Roast!
