Reading some of the other reviews, I wonder if I was dining at the same restaurant. I experienced a far superior meal than what others found to be sub par. My fellow diner and I stopped in for lunch, finding a few other patrons speckled throughout the interior. We chose the patio, even with the rain, seeing they had it entirely covered. Out of doors, we found another pair of diners, one being Mexican and grinning from ear-to-ear. This was a sign of promise for me. Upon being seated by the genial host, we were presented with the complimentary chips & salsa. The tortilla chips were warm and the salsa was even warmer (a.k.a. spicy). There were the apparent flavors of the cilantro and charred peppers with a subtle hint of heat. I am a salsa connoisseur, and I rate this one at the top. I highly recommend pairing your starter with a traditional margarita on the rocks. This is not from a tapper or mix. You will taste the sweetness of the tequila and fresh, tart lime juice. The salt from the chips make your beverage shine even more. The added bonus is that it comes in a large mug! No silly cactus-stemmed glassware here. The entrees were timed well, allowing for our chips & salsa to settle some. The plates were hot and offered nicely sized portions. You will likely take a to-go box with you when leaving...or not. The food is tasty, and you will be tempted to finish your entire plate. The Camarones a la Diabla is one dish that was so satisfying that I had to force myself to self. You receive a platter of perfectly cooked shrimp in chipotle sauce. You may order your tortilla of choice, but I suggest going with the corn to give the dish a nice nutty complement. My fellow diner found bliss in his dish as well. He chose the Enchiladas Suizas de Pollo. The menu description did not lie. The tortillas were stuffed with juicy, tender shreds of chicken. I noticed that the tortillas, even under the light blanket of green enchilada sauce, were still intact. My companion commented, "I do not think I have ever eaten at a Mexican restaurant where the food was served hot and stayed hot." The one minus during our experience at La Salsa was the second helping of chips. They were not warm, and they were slightly stale. I do not know if other reviewers received stale chips immediately or with their seconds, but, either way, the chips should never be stale. They should be fresh and warm each day, with two batches made during the day (morning and afternoon), if necessary. That is my only recommendation to the restaurant owners/manager. Improve on that one important item--seeing it is what greets guests first--and they may be well on their way to 5 stars.

This place is just barely edible, and by barely I mean half of my meal (nachos) went into the garbage. My husband ordered a burrito and that too, went into the garbage. The food was greasy, bland and had a very chewy texture that was very strange. We won't be returning.

We decided to try something new outside of the normal Bay View Mexican establishments. Mariachi's, margaritas and great Mexican food. What more could you ask for on Cinco de Mayo? Our experience was limited as we ordered take out from here however the trip inside was well worth it. Friendly atmosphere, not too busy, and fast service. Ordered by phone and it was ready in less than 20 minutes. Good salsa, fresh chips and cheap tacos. Note: if you aren't that hungry be prepared to take half of your burrito home as they are huge and delicious.

I've been going there since they opened. And never had a complaint. You guessed it's my favorite Mexican Restaurant

I've passed Restaurante La Salsa many times in the past and just haven't had the desire to stop in. Well, being Cinco de Mayo and now a new Bay View resident, I felt it was right to give it a try. RLS has your typical Mexican decor and was bigger than I expected it to be! For the Cinco de Mayo celebration they had various specials and a live Mariachi band. The atmosphere was just what we were looking for. We were promptly seated, and I could tell that our server was pretty busy. I expected that with the holiday. No problem. The salsa was great - spicier than expected - but fresh and had great flavor. Margaritas were AOK. Sweeter than I expected for the traditional lime flavor - but not bad by any means. I ordered a combination of Chile Relleno, Chicken enchilada and Steak taco. All met my expectations. I was pleased. The only complaint I have - and I can't take away a star for it due to the Holiday and just a general overly busy atmosphere - was that our server didn't ask if we wanted another drink until we were already done with our food and she had cleared our plates. My poor margarita mug sat empty for most of the meal. Anyway - overall - I was pleasantly surprised. If I'm ever looking for the typical Mexican fare with no frills, I now have my go to spot.

Descriptive phrase: good, cheap Mexican-American standards. In an area covered in Mexican restaurants, Restaurante La Salsa stands out a bit at their busy corner spot on Oklahoma and Chase. It's nice inside, with comfortable decorations and atmosphere. I really liked some of the classic black and white photos from way down south. Service was quick but not unfriendly. The mango margarita was cheap and big, though was one of those slushi-types. The first round of chips and salsa is gratis, but you'll pay for any more. I liked the salsa, though it does have a kick. I always order mole something-or-other, but I was a bit unimpressed with La Salsa's Chicken Mole Enchiladas. They were good, though I've certainly had better nearby. My wife's shredded beef burrito, however, was fantastic. The beef had been marinated for quite some time, and distinct flavors oozed out with every bite. Highly recommended. Overall Restaurante La Salsa does good Mexican staples for cheaper than you'd expect in a nice sitdown setting.

The food was excellent! Very traditional, authentic Mexican. Atmosphere was fun, too. Our service was a little slow, but not bad by any means.

Solid food on the relative cheap, a colorful ambiance, and an extremely impressive-looking patio. They do the "standard" Mexican fare you'll find in droves up and down 5th St. quite well; better than many others, to be sure. Solid solid solid. (If I'm being honest, I was surprised!) Fresh, "just spicy enough" salsa. A solid shredded beef tostada. Lard-laden pinto beans, which means they were delicious. Fluffy rice. Nothing revolutionary, but well done through and through. Situated on the corner of Oklahoma and Chase, it's convenient for Bay Viewers and it's just off the highway if you duck off on Holt. Easy peasy. I didn't partake in the boozes, but I wanted to. It was too early, alas. SOCIETAL NORMS AND SUCH, ya'feel? Lauren S: So a Margarona is a beergarita, just with Corona? Beergaritas are my favorite. They have a parking lot. Check it out if you want casual yet solid Mexican eats!

I found this place to be wonderful. It's your traditional Mexican American cuisine. Their margaritas were VERY good. Did not appear to be a mix. Ambiance is lacking as they are on a major intersection. Definitely worth checking out.

As of last night, La Salsa is my reigning favorite Mexican restaurant in the Bay View(ish) area. The restaurant offers standard Mexican menu items. I had the chicken flautas (which included guacamole + sour cream, good deal) -- perfectly crispy, chicken was tender and flavorful. I also had a bite of a chicken burrito which was tasty (though really, how do you screw up a burrito?). The salsa was fresh and delicious. I drank a Dos Equis but had I known beforehand that La Salsa serves Margaronas (or Coronitas, whatever you prefer to call a Corona dunked in a margarita), it would have been a different story. I'm already planning on heading back to La Salsa for a Margarona on a night that I won't be driving.

Really great salsa, lots of onion and cilantro...the posole soup is delicious if you're lucky enough to be there when it's on special

Came here for lunch on a Monday afternoon. It wasn't busy. I had a combination plate with the chicken chimichanga, shredded beef taco and ground beef tostada except I substituted pork for the ground beef. It was $1 extra to sub, but it was worth it to me since I don't eat ground beef. Everything was well seasoned and yummy. The salsa was medium-hot. I usually do mild, but the salsa had lots of cilantro which I love. Chips were good, nice and crisp but just a touch too dark. The tostada was a touch too dark too. The chimichanga was great and the taco was good too (just topped with cilantro and onions). The rice and beans were actually good and I never eat the rice and beans, so that's saying something! If they could take the food out of the fryer half a minute sooner, it'd have been perfect. Oh and added some sour cream. Not an automatic side, which was a bummer. I Ordered a house margarita on the rocks to wash down my meal. It was pretty good, pretty strong and not the cheapest rail tequila ever, so I was pleased. I will definitely be back. Oh I should say a word about the decor. It's not a "nice" restaurant by any means. Definitely more of a hole in the wall type place (painted ceiling tiles?!) but go there for the food. It's pretty good!

If you are looking for a new Mexican restaurant that isn't in the main area where everyone goes, this is the place to go to. We really like this place. It's a newfound place for us and the food is great. The name of the restaurant is appropriately named La Salsa, as they have some awesome homemade salsa upon being seated. It's hot, so you have to like some heat. The menu options are great, the food is really good, and the price is appropriate. We have gone on a Sunday evening and it was pretty empty. We went on a Saturday evening and it wasn't super busy, but busier. I am totally fine with the location, but I bet if this were in the middle of the Walkers Point area where all the other Mexican restaurants are, this place would be a lot busier. The food is good. There are many times I don't feel like going to the Walkers Point area and want to try somewhere else; this place fits the bill. We will be returning here and bringing friends here often. In the event you care about cleanliness, it's clean. Large booths, clean tables, clean menus (not sticky and full of gunk), and other areas are clean too. Some Mexican restaurants are kitchy, in that their décor and furniture don't match and seats are wobbly; while this is OK at times, I am not always in the mood for this type of setting. La Salsa is a normal restaurant with traditional/matching seating and large enough for a crew. It doesn't feel like one of those places where it's cramped and poor seating. We sat our group of five comfortably in a booth.

Very good food, reasonably priced, pleasant dinning area. Waitstaff was nice. The drinks were not the greatest. But all in all a very nice authentic Mexican restaurant. I would recommend.

Went again, and we tried the combination for 2 on the back of the menu. It was EXCELLENT- very Flavorful!! You each get a plate with Rice, Beans, Jalapeno Salsa, and Guac. THEN you get this huge plate filled with sauteed Beef, Chicken, Choriso, potatoes, and onions. it was sooooo good. We also ordered Margaritas. They tasted very good, but could not taste any tequila. Overall LOVED the food!!!

Service was slow and trust me they weren't even that busy. But the waitresses were very nice and friendly. Love that the kids menu has other options besides a taco. Serving sizes were a good size. Walked away full. Food was very good and decently priced. Love that they have a patio option too. All around I'm happy with the food, the price and that it wasn't loud. Will be going back.

We stopped in on Saturday night and found the place to be somwehat slow which made it easy for us to get in and get service. In fact we didn't even have our feet all the way in the door when the host pounced on us to offer us a table anywhere in the main dining room. He was pleasant enough. We sat and looked around, there was a bar on the other side of the wall with a few people there. I was instantly sorry we didn't ask to be seated at the bar. That is more our style. We were brought the traditional chips and salsa and the chips were just OK but the salsa was fantastic. It was hot but flavorful and loaded with fresh tomato chunks. Make sure you have some water at your table before taking a taste. I ordered my standard regular margarita on the rocks and it was served in a big beer mug, The margarita was decent, the prize was getting so much of it for the money. The Mexican beer selection was better than most but my husband ordered a Negra Modelo, like he always does. I ordered the burrito suizo with shredded beef and my husband ordered the chicken flautas. The burrito was huge and covered with melted cheese which was contradictory to the refried beans which were cold. You would think melting the cheese would make the beans warmer. The rice was the same bland stuff that is served at all the other average Mexican restaurants in town. My husband really liked the flautas. The dinner was good, with very large portions. I took home more than I ate. The prices were reasonable and the service was also good. I will come back and try the fajitas.

Slowest freaking service of my life. We went there with another couple for lunch a while back and where the only ones in the place besides another couple at the bar. We didnt order anything crazy yet the food took almost 40 minutes to deliver. We where all so hungry we downed our water quickly to which no one ever asked to refill. After finally getting our lunch and finishing it took about another 30 minutes to clean up our plates and give us our check. It took SO long that I joked I was going to start taking a dollar off their initially terrible tip until they gave us the bill. The tip would have been about -$17. I can see if this was a Friday or Saturday night with many tables and such but since we where practically alone and for lunch, there was zero excuse for this type of service. The food there isnt anything to rave about either. Typical Americanized Mexican food with cold beans with plasticy melted cheese all over everything. Add in the additional dirty dining segment they have had and my friend getting food poisoning since we have been there and its solidified the fact that I will never be returning.

I dined at La Salsa on a Thursday evening. There were a few people sitting at the bar but we were the only ones in the dining room at the time our arrival. The waitress was very nice and prompt, ensuring our chips and salsa was never empty. Chips tasted fresh and not too salty. The salsa was very good and had a nice kick to it - the kind of kick where you can't tell it's going to get you until you stop eating it. The house margaritas were awesome, with a good amount of tequila, and reasonably priced (I think the large marg was $6-7ish) :) I ordered the Enchiladas de Mole with shredded beef. The mole sauce had good thickness and flavor. However, it was not as spicy as I have had at some other restaurants, which is totally fine with me because I generally don't care for overly spicy foods. My meal came with 3 enchiladas, refried beans, rice, and a side of lettuce and tomato for $8.95. Overall, great service and food for a reasonable price and much more relaxed dining experience than going to a "big name" Mexican restaurant. I also loved the unique painted tables. I definitely plan on returning!

My husband and I love the food here. But there bad service makes us think twice every time we want to come here. We never have napkins or utensils. They take your order and then vanish until your food is up. And god forbid you ask for more salsa or anything else for that matter. The servers are no where to be found-they all hang out by the bar. We get the same server every time and we are always disappointed. The second to last time we were there..it was 25 minutes before anyone came to ask if we needed anything else. Yes-the bill so we can leave. Go for the food-leave for the service. And it is a shame because the food is great

Great food, but the service is terrible. My wife and I have eaten lunch at this place several times, but after constantly receiving rude service from the manager, we decided to spend our money elsewhere.

Not impressed at all ! To begin with I am Mexican ! Therefore they don't care as much as they do with white people cuz all the customers where white! And the wait staff where very friendly with them! My waitress didn't even smile once at all! Actually none of them did! I ordered the chicken soup which was very tasteless , how can they mess up a chicken soup? Anyway while I waited for my soup I tried their chips and salsa which was also disappointing! The name of the place is la salsa for gods sake! At least get the salsa done the right way !! I will never eat there again !! Very disappointed !!

We love La Salsa! We go there often and the food is consistently good and at a good price. Plus the dining atmosphere is roomy and pleasant compared to other places in the area (i.e. KK/Lincoln or Walker's Point). This is a great place for a large party too, so keep this place in mind for birthdays, etc...then hit the bars in Bay View.

Today was my second time at La Salsa and I am impressed once again. We sat on the patio and were the only people out there. It was a warm day but the patio is so cool, it is kind of rustic and has a roof so if it is raining you can still eat outside. We started with the chips and salsa and the salsa was wonderful, fresh and definitely had a bite to it. I had a strawberry margarita on the rocks this time and a lime margarita on the rocks last time. The margaritas are reasonably priced ($5) but slightly too sweet. I ordered the taco plate ($8) with which consisted of 3 generous steak tacos and a large order of both rice and beans. The steak was charred but not burnt and the flavor was spot on. The beans and rice are better than I have had at most other restaurants. My boyfriend ordered the tostada plate ($9) with chorizo and it was phenomenal. The tostadas had beans, a large portion of good chorizo, lettuce, tomato, freshly grated mexican cheese and sour cream. The plate also came with the same huge portion of rice and beans. For 2 plates of food, 2 sodas, and a margarita - it was only $25. This place is tasty, reasonable, has generous portions, and is a hidden gem. Give them a try!

I wish I had looked into this place before stopping on a whim. Everything on my table is absolutely mediocre. Thank goodness my coca cola came in a can because I'm sure they'd find a way to ruin that too. The tortilla chips are stale and I'm pretty sure made from recycled cardboard. Given the name of this place you would think they might have good salsa to accompany those cardboard chips, but no. The 4 mares soup said it had crab legs. If you say "crab legs" don't they have to be real? Funny thing is that the genuine fake crab they used totaled a whopping two pieces. Not sticks but pieces. Just as we'll cuz I hate imitation crab. Guacamole is flavorless and those cardboard chips are too thin to pick up without breaking much less dip in anything. Suffice to say I won't be coming back ever.

We dined here this past Saturday. We were seated immediately and our waitress stopped and introduced herself, delivered some chips and salsa and took our drink orders. After drinks were served we ordered some guacamole and had some questions on menu items. She patiently answered our questions and went to bring our guacamole. I do like chunky guacamole and in my opinion, Restaurante La Salsa has some of the best in the city. My wife ordered a combination plate and I ordered enchilada ranchero. Both dishes were delicious, but my favorite item was the tamale that was on my wife's combo platter. I think I will order tamales next time we dine at La Salsa and I do know we will dine there again.

I agree with the previous review saying the food is meh. Our chips were stale. The salsa was just ok. We also had the Parradilla & the Chimichangas and they were just ok. I would have rather spent the $ and calories at Guanajuatos.

  • Rich K.

The food is "meh", like any of the other americanized places in Walker's Point. The service was very good. I live about a mile away, but would rather drive to Botanas or Conejitos for the same stuff. Their soda is served to you in a can and a glass with ice. No fountain sodas here. I suggest going to Riviera Maya, the flavors are MUCH fresher and costs are quite comparable.

A Good, Nearby Alternative to the Larger Mexican Joints If you want Mexican food with a bit more personalized service, a more intimate setting, and food that is cooked to order, this place is worth a gander. It's small, it's clean, and it's friendly. Overall, the food isn't spectacularly orgasmic. But I feel it is on par, and sometimes better than what you find at the popular places. And they also have a few unique (and more authentic) menu items that you can't find at most other places. The salsa was good. It was a nice balance of sweet and heat. But there was something missing that kept it from being a great, fresh-tasting salsa. The chips were chips. Not stale. But not Erik Estrada. This review will probably be here for a while... so I'm going to phrase this next section like this: "Remember those 3 weeks of mind-numbing, sweltering heat back in July of 2012?" Well, we needed margaritas and we needed them fast! $4 for traditional lime and $4 for blended strawberry. I am soooo there! Neither was particularly strong, but they hit the spot on a 103-degree day. Lime on the rocks was a little sweet for my taste. But I thought the blended strawberry was very well-balanced. Perfect for a day like that. My date got enchiladas with rice and beans. She said the enchiladas were par - exactly what one would find at 107 different Mexican restaurants in town. I tried some of her rice and beans. The rice was OK. And I REALLY liked the beans. There were some subtle flavors going on in there that I've never had in refried beans... and it was a great complement to the main dishes. I got something I can't remember the name of. But it was a soup with shrimp and octopus. It was listed under the main seafood dishes and was served somewhere between luke warm and room temp. It was a tomato base with onions, tomatoes, and lots of cilantro. I thought it was really good... I give it an 8 out of 10. Very fresh-tasting and very refreshing, Again, a great choice on a hot day. And they did NOT skimp on the shrimp and octopus. It was loaded with it - far more than I ever expected. Overall, I felt the food prices were fair and the drink prices were more than fair. This place is less than a few months old. It was home to 2 neglected restaurants prior to a renovation, and now it is quite nice inside. I think they have a good base for a menu and a lot of potential for getting better. If they take the care and effort to work out the kinks and perfect their menu and customer service (that's not to say they weren't friendly - they were quite friendly), they could easily jump to 4 or 5 stars!

Went there on a whim for a late lunch with a few friends. It was very quiet there so we got immediate seating and service. The salsa that they served with the chips was really fresh and had just enough spiciness. The margaritas had a very generous amount of tequila. I had the chicken fajitas, they were seasoned perfectly. I even ate all the refried beans that came with my lunch, although I have never been a big fan of beans these were actually good! My friend had cheese & onion enchiladas with mole and my other friend had a steak burrito suizo and they were both very pleased with their meals. They have a number of lunch specials which I believe were were $5.50. The prices all around are very reasonable. $10.95 for enchiladas is definitely on the low end compared with other mexican restaurants that I've eaten at and they give you a huge amount.

Well, if it's called "La Salsa," the salsa should be good, right? And in fact, it is: moderately spicy, fresh tomatoes, cilantro...it was the highlight of the meal. Unfortunately, that means the rest of the meal wasn't that good. The tortilla chips themselves were an odd mix: some were warm and fresh, while others seemed stale - as if they'd made new ones but just tossed them on top of the old, stale ones. Not a good move. I had one of the combos, with a chicken tostada, a shredded beef enchilada, and a ground beef taco. Normally, I'm not a fan of ground beef in Mexican restaurants (seems too "Americanized") - but this, too, was pretty good, with some nice spicing and adding potatoes and onions. Th chicken was only so-so, however - and the shredded beef was not properly heated such that it was only lukewarm in the center. It was also bland. With so many really good Mexican restaurants within a few miles of this place (particularly a little ways north), it's really going to have to improve to get me to return. The service was reasonably friendly and efficient, but not exceptional.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
