It was like going to Grandma's house in the 70s and being fed the newest asian food recipe from Ladies' Home Journal. Sweet and Sour Pork in a sweet red sauce with big squares of bell pepper and canned pineapple. Chop Suey which resembles the inside of a chicken pot pie over rice. Can't forget the classic Egg Foo Young with brown gravy. I appreciated that they had tempura vegetables, but they had become soggy in the pan. The staff was very friendly and the restaurant warm and comfortable. The egg rolls were the size of small burritos. I don't feel like it was a horrible meal, but I doubt I'll eat there again.

We went there for the first time for lunch. We chose the buffet. It was very delicious! The food was fresh and there were many choices. It was a great value for the price. Our server was very friendly and attentive. A wonderful place for a Chinese lunch - we'll be back!

We are new to Milwaukee, so are trying to sort out the wheat from the chaff. Sorry, Lychee Garden; you have fallen into the latter group. Having read the other reviews, and having stopped in once to pick up some take-out soup which my wife enjoyed at home, I gave this place a 50/50 chance, but was willing to try it for a full meal. My wife and I came in on a Thursday evening about 6:30, and there were, perhaps, ten other patrons there. This restaurant, I gather, has been around for quite a while. Unfortunately, it seems to have become complacent on it's past success and has failed to keep up with the new breed of restaurants in the MKE area now. It feels old when you walk in. Not dirty, but just not fresh. It doesn't seem to have been updated since maybe the 80s. The staff, however, did seem sincere, attentive and eager to please. Now, as to the buffet: The food was visually appealing, though the selection was pretty small (That was put to shame by another Chinese buffet we had been to on 27th, and at the same price.) The flavor just wasn't there. My wife called it "watery". It just lay there. The szechuan chicken, which is traditionally quite spicy, tasted more like my moms country chicken and rice. No zip whatsoever. The ribs were very (almost to) sweet, and a tad on the dry side. The back-breaker though, was the mold on the sugar doughnut balls that I always look forward to at the end of the meal. I didn't see it, but rather, tasted it, as I wasn't wearing my glasses at the time. This was my last bite. We quickly paid and left. I felt like bringing this to the attention of the manager would be to little, to late. I would not recommend Lychee Garden.

Me and my daughter decided to drop in on a whim. Never even knew this place existed even though I have driven by hundreds of times. Looks like an old elk lodge or something to that effect. Parking lot was packed on a Friday night. We decided to go cheap and get the buffett like many of the other patrons. I rarely get buffetts and this place re-inforced my code. They didnt have many entree options. No white rice, egg drop soup was mostly broth. I was chewing on a bone chip from one of the dishes. Our cokes tasted like diet. The entrees looked like they were sitting for a while. Sweet and sour chicken was decent. Beef dish was ok. Donuts and shrimp chips were good. Staff was friendly and fast and nice. Prices were very cheap. If i ever go again, I will order a regular entree.

This place is fucking disgusting. The worst Chinese food I have ever eaten. The people are very nice. It's dirty and just gross.

We always go for either their lunch or dinner buffet. The food is always delicious and the service excellent. Their egg drop soup is the best, not full of corn starch like most. Price is good too.

Absolutely terrific food here. The buffet is pretty good too but I usually order off of the menu. The staff here is so friendly ! They are genuinely happy to see you each time you come in. Favorite dish: Cantonese Style Chow Mein w/ Beef

I can here with my husband to check it out because we drive past it a lot. Lets just say I was not impressed - when we walked in, it seemed very empty. We decided to go with the buffet & this place made New China Buffet look good. There were barely a good variety of food and half the stuff seemed like it had been sitting for a while. Never going again for the buffet.

I went there on Sunday and had the buffet. The selection was relatively limited. Items ranged from decent (sweet and sour chicken) to barely edible (egg foo yung). I would not recommend this place, as they are well below average for American Chinese restaurant.

Fairly good for Milwaukee Chinese food. Buffet could have been fresher than when I went, but worth giving it another try. Their take out is always fresh and steaming hot. Average pricing, buffet is available for take out also. They have a bar that seemed pretty busy, nice waitstaff... Ensured after bringing the bill for the buffet "no rush, take your time" service better than most Chinese places. I can see why they've been around for so long.

Lychee Gardens has been around for 20+ years and there is a reason why. Conveniently located on Layton Ave, great food and wonderful atmosphere. Full service bar with very reasonable drinks. The people there are so very friendly. I have been there many times in my life and always enjoy it. Great Christmas Eve tradition and Chinese New Year too! I highly recommend you give it a try and you will see that it is a great place to visit again and again.

Ehhh - it wasn't bad The family & I went to Lychee Garden last week Friday (2/11) for the first time. The experience was so-so. Nothing wowed me. Nothing disgusted me. I would be willing to go back. The restaurant was too crowded for a Friday night. When we first walked in the hostess asked us if we minded sitting on the right side of the restaurant. My first thought is "there aren't any smoking sections anymore, so why would I care which side of the restaurant we were on?" She seated us and handed us menus. Apparently the restaurant has a buffet and it is on the opposite side of the dining room. It wasn't a big deal, as I am not a big fan of buffets. We ordered Sesame Chicken, Curry Beef, Pork fried rice and some Crab Rangoon. My first measure of a quality Chinese style restaurant is their Crab Rangoon. The best in the city belongs to Fortune Chinese on Hwy 100 in Hales Corners. No one else's that I have tried even comes close. Lychee Garden was no exception. They weren't awful, but they simply were not that good. They were bland. You could taste a little bit of the cream cheese but certainly not any crab. The Pork Fried Rice was okay. It wasn't overcooked which seems so common. The Sesame Chicken was a bit different from what I have had in the past. There are two things that stand out. The first was the sauce. It was a black sauce, but I don't know what it tasted like. It wasn't teriyaki or soy sauce. It wasn't overpowering in anyway. It was a nice mild sauce. The other thing that stood out was that the chicken wasn't battered and deep fried. It looked like it was cooked as a part of the dish. This was nice because it also meant that it wasn't overcooked and stringy. The star of the meal was the Curry Beef. We ordered our medium spicy. It was just the right amount of after bite. The beef was tender and flavorful. It was simply a really good dish. Overall, the portion sizes were a bit small when compared to other Chinese restaurants. Usually when the family goes out for Chinese we have enough for lunch the next day. This time there was only some fried rice and a little bit of Sesame Chicken left to box up. When combined with the prices of individual dishes, it left a bit to be desired. IIRC, The fried rice was $9 and the main dishes were in the $12-15 range. When merged with the quality of the dishes (except the Crab Rangoon) it wasn't bad. For the four of us, we had the above dishes plus a couple of lemonades to drink (me and the son had water). Our bill was $45. Again - it wasn't bad but just don't expect to leave with lunch for tomorrow. The service was fine. My water glass was barely empty. The food came to us hot. Our waitress was quite pleasant.

5 out of 5 Stars. To make this short and sweet. I have gone to Lychee as long as I can remember (I am 32). I now take my own family here. Wife and kids love it. While we are very health conscience about what we eat when we are looking for a "cheat" night this is a great place. Food is always hot, prepared to expectation, and served with a smile! You can not beat the prices either. All around great!

I stopped for lunch one day with a friend. You could order off the menu or choose the buffet. We chose the buffet and found it to be quite good. Maybe it wasn't as big as the Chinese buffet restaurants, but the food was much better. I especially enjoyed the egg rolls and egg foo young. The downside is that the chefs use way too much salt!

I thoroughly enjoy the food here. Not only that, the atmosphere, wait staff as well as having a full bar is also a plus! I love ordering the Beef Chow fun- really tender beef with vegetables and pan fried fat noodles..It's just amazing and mouth watering! I also like how you can subtract and add certain ingredients to the entree as well. They also offer a buffet area for the hearty eaters!

We walked in on a Friday night at about 7:00pm. The parking lot was full...but all the patrons were ar the bar. The vibe was weird..like you took the attendees of a 70's swinger's party and fast forwarded them 40 years and then put them in a poorly decorated Chinese restaurant. First we ordered drinks...iced tea for me and diet cola for my husband. The iced tea was Chinese hot tea iced up and it tasted like chemicals. The soda tasted like they didnt clean their lines. The waitress, who was very nice but clueless with 70's winged back hair, kept pushing the free soda refills. No thanks we said. Water is great. The food was ....disgusting. I ordered the egg drop soup which consisted of browned egg whites in salty gelatinous broth. My husband ordered the crab rangoons. No sauce accompanying them...just dried rangoons. The dinner was a horror show. I had chicken with broccoli...which was basically white goo with strangely sliced and very thin chicken on coarsely chopped broccoli. I had to put a bunch of soy sauce on it to give it any flavor and the consistency was sloppy. My husband ordered cashew chicken. It tasted like canned La Choy reheated in the microwave. The rice was decent..but the peas had freezer burn. Halfway through dinner one of the bar patrons decided to fill the restaurant with his best rendition of a loud boisterous drunk. To top it off, the fortune cookies were stale. Expensive mistake. We won't be returning and if you are interested in someone heating up your La Choy..this is the place for you.

We had previously heard that this place was really good but we were disappointed. I went with my mother and sister and we had buffet. Given we went on a Monday afternoon but the buffet food had been out for a while, you could tell because it was very Crunchy, dry and had skins on the liquids. I don't feel it was worth the almost $12 a person.

This place has been my families go to for Chinese food for over 10 years. We order take out about once a month, and it is always hot and fresh. I have also gone for the buffet several times, and there is a lot of variety. It usually seems to be the way to go when you are dining in. The people working there are always very nice and appreciative of the business. Yesterday we had mooshoo Chicken, and there was enough for 2 meals.

As I have been thinking of a place to eat I turned to yelp to help. I didn't want a burger I didn't want a mexican food so I came across Lychee garden on yelp. The service was pleasant. The cashier hostess was friendly as well as our server. She was also very pleasant and always at our service. Our drinks were always topped off all the time. I had the dinner buffet. It was okay lots of greasy tempura style assortment. Perhaps it was a little early for the crowds to come in but eventually lots of people started to flow in. Seems like they ventured to the bar side of the restaurant and filled with a lot of regulars there. My overall experience was good. Great to use our handy yelp app to help me decide on where to go next. Keep up the good job Lychee Garden.

We ended up here for dinner because Kopp's had nowhere to sit. We all had the buffet, which was just okay. The food was pretty salty, especially the egg drop soup. I couldn't eat more than a couple of spoonfuls. Service was pleasant and friendly.

This is the absolute BEST chinese food in the city, without a doubt. This is a weekly place for me and family/friends. The staff is excellent, friendly and accommodating. The food is always fresh, fast and plentiful. The drinks are fantastic and it is all reasonably priced as well. The menu is extensive, the place is clean, the food is fantastic and the drinks are flowing! What more could you ask for?

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
