My fiancé and I went here with a low bar but Kawa really blew us out of the water! We have both worked at other very popular, high end sushi restaurants in Milwaukee and can honestly say that this is some of the freshest, highest quality sushi you can get in the area. The quality of the fish was excellent- very buttery, no fishy taste, and clearly fresh The wait time for food was almost nonexistent, we could see the chef's making our sushi (so we know it wasn't pre made) and it was pushed out within five to ten minutes of being seated Overall, I haven't had sushi this good in a long long time even though I eat it regularly. Kawa is a hop and a skip from our house and we will be here weekly for sure! I hope other people can experience this delicious sushi spot.

This review is for Non Sushi food at Kawa. I realize that most diners at Kawa - would order Sushi but I didn't; hence I cannot comment on it. When you enter a good restaurant - particularly even more so, an Asian restaurant, it should not have a "stale odor of reused oil in fryers". A Good Chinese restaurant would have a a good aroma of fresh oil - because frying in Oil is inherent in Chinese cooking. A good Japanese restaurant should have almost no smell of oil fryers because it should be mostly about Sushi and less about deep frying in Oil. Many Asian restaurants are now becoming a fusion type of Chinese and Japanese. How ever, Kawa seems 100% Japanese and Kawa smells clean and fresh! No stale oil odor. It deserves 5 stars for that aspect of it. 5 Stars for their Asian Salad! Truly, as good as it gets! Too often, Japanese restaurants don't seem to have a good recipe for Japanese salad dressing. Most have too much of ginger paste - often very over powering. In my opinion, Kyoto has the best salad dressing. Kawa is "almost as good". Different from Kyto's but almost as good! 5 Stars for their service. Very friendly and very nice! 5 Stars for their location - quite convenient, across Bayshore mall, without having to worry about parking. 4 stars for their Japanese fried rice. 4 stars for their chicken noodle dish - I opted for their egg noodles, as opposed to the flat Udon (choices offered). I had specifically requested that they use less oil. I don't know whether or not they reduced the oil used but it was still quite oily - but then, a dish like this always is, very oily. But clearly, the Oil used was very fresh and of high quality - even for my home cooking, I prefer sesame oil from Japan. This dish had that very good aroma of Japanese sesame oil. 4 stars for their Chicken with teriyaki - The chicken was quite moist. Typically, I dislike Chicken teriyaki because it is too sweet for me - and I disliked this. I gave it 4 stars because, it would be 4 star (or even 5 star) worthy for those who enjoy a sweetish teriyaki chicken dish. My personal preference for Japanese fried rice and fusion Asian food is Kyoto. I would go to Kawa again, for its Asian Salad and fried rice, for the convenience of its location.

Good food, good service, prices were reasonable. Glad to have them on the north side. And yes, they were playing Christmas music but transposed to elevator style... A bit odd, but classic Asian atmosphere. (Having lived in Asia 7 years).

I've been to all taste-worthy Asian restaurants in Milwaukee. This is THE best Japanese restaurant. Though I still can't believe this is in Wisconsin, I am very happy this is finally happening to the community. Thank you, Kawa!

Good food, good services, good surroundings, and reasonable price. I love the salmon delight and tako yaki.

Went there for my 65th birthday with my wife and daughter. Nice prices. Very unpretentious place. And very, very, very good food.

If you can think of better things than green tea served in adorable ceramic mugs from Japan, cute and friendly waitresses, and melt in your mouth sashimi, then let me know! I tried this place on a whim because I was in the neighborhood, and I'm so glad I did! Chirashi is typically my go-to dish at Japanese restaurants. This dish consists of a variety of sashimi served on top of a bowl of rice, or with rice on the side. Not only do I love this dish, but I think it's clean and simple approach is also a great indicator of the freshness of the fish and artistry of the chef. Before my main dish, I was served a bowl of miso soup and a small side salad. I was pleasantly surprised that instead of just the usual iceberg lettuce you normally receive, there were also some other leafy greens and a cherry tomato. Yum! My Chirashi came next and it was absolutely beautiful! There was a great selection including tuna, salmon, and shrimp. One of the other reasons I love this dish is because it offers you a variety of sashimi to try, and is typically priced between $17-21 (depending on the restaurant), which I think it's a good deal for the amount of food. All of my fish was extremely fresh, matching the quality of sushi that I've had in Los Angeles and other ocean side cities. My waitress told us that they get their fish every few days, and that the veggies are either from Whole Foods or our very own Growing Power. The lunch specials end at 3pm. My only caveat with this place is that there are two televisions which I personally hate when it comes to ambiance. If you really want to watch something, go see a movie at the IPIC after your meal - you can walk there from this restaurant! Should you check out this place? Well, As Nike encourages us, I encourage you: Just Do It.

Finally a new sushi place, centrally located in the north shore! When I first arrived the people were very welcoming. The decor is very sleek and clean, but I have to say our white table had some sort of red stain which wasn't the most appetizing. Also, the fact they were playing Christmas music was slightly odd..especially sense it was July. I ordered the bento box for lunch which included a California roll, salad, rice, either a spring roll or shrimp dumpling, and a choice between a few entrees. The best part is that it was $11!! Everything was very good, and the sushi tasted very fresh. Overall, I would DEFINITELY go again

Pretty good. I am a fan of Japanica and Fujiama but this place just seems dive-y with fresh ingredients. I'll be back, the prices are right.

Awesome salad dressing and miso soup, with the Kastu Don! Order it! Cheap only $12! But enough to for lunch

Was pleasantly surprised to go here on a whim. Had the Amazing roll, shrimp tempura roll, avocado roll, and avocado/peanut roll. They were all very tasty. The miso soup was good as well. The service was excellent. They were helpful and responsive!

Fresh fish, extremely friendly staff, reasonable prices. Highly recommended to all sushi lovers. The tempura was great, too.

Amazing Roll was delicious! Service was great/friendly/prompt. I had the Tempura Chicken which was very good - but I would prefer the vegetables to not be fried too. Too much fried in one dish. Everything else was superb!

We tried this place last night and absolutely liked it. Friendly service, nice ambiance, and great food. The maki rolls were crispy, fresh, and delicious. I had been missing the rolls at Ichiban on Farwell and this place offers a similar variety and style. We both dined for under $20 each, including a glass of wine. Will come back!

Love sushi in here. So fresh so taste. I try the fan the flame and Godzilla . Both of them are so yummy. Can not wait to come here again

Decided to go here for the lunch menu. I found the portions to be kind of small, especially the stirfried Udon noodles...but still very tasty. The sushi was OK not spectacular in anyway, nor did we get any special rolls... but found them decent. Unlike other reviews I found the interior decorations very nice. The tables with marbled tops was a nice twist. But, getting in the restaurant was a bit confusing because you park in the back of the restaurant then walk around to the front. Since there is no sidewalk, you're walking on the grass to get there.

Fish is fresh. Made to order. Flavor is there. Service is great! There's more on the menu I'd like to come back for. So far, so good!

Great food at this place. My Wife and I decided to try this place out and both love sushi and have had it in many different places. We ordered the white swan roll and it was fantastic! The miso was very good and we both loved the dumplings. The service was great and the owner came over and spoke with us for a little while, it was an overall great experience that we boy recommend. Terrific sushi.

Great fresh food, clean bright decor and we had a great server. The Gyoza and seaweed salad were great and we recommend the Sashimi Delux (beautiful presentation). Our kids loved the teriyaki (beef & chicken) but could have shared one.

Second time at Kawa, and another great experience. I just got home and I'm already looking forward to the next time I can go back.

I highly recommend kawa. Visited for our first time today and was very impressed. This is the only place in the milwaukee area that offers takoyaki, and it is delicious. No matter what you order you can't go wrong. All of their seafood is incredibly fresh and it is apparent when you take your first bite. I'm excited to try the uni (sea urchin) since I'm a huge fan of it, it's only offered on Fridays and Saturdays, but I will definitely be visiting again for more sushi and also to try their don offerings. The staff is incredibly friendly and the service is prompt. They get a five star rating in my book I will certainly be back for more.

Best sushi I've had in the Milwaukee area. And frankly, some of the best I've ever had. The white swan roll is spectacular. Spicy maki dinner was great. Nice attentive service. I'll be coming back often!

Very good quality fish. Greatly enjoyed our order of salmon sashimi, and two tuna-focused specialty rolls. Our order of scallop sashimi could have been a larger portion -- the amount of salmon sashimi we got matched what we were used to around the country (three thick slices), but the scallop sashimi seemed like one small scallop sliced into three relatively thin pieces; tasted good, but bigger, thicker cuts of scallop would have been better. Age tofu had a great texture, and was fried very well. Would recommend this place to people who enjoy sushi.

My family tired this place for the first time yesterday and we loved it. The food was fresh and very good. They have been open for only two weeks and I am so glad that I live nearby because I will be there often.

The food was really fresh and delicious-much better than anything I've eaten in Milwaukee at a similar price point. Also my kids love the Japanese soda. The decor is a little weird, but that doesn't really matter to me. I also love that they use all organic ingredients.

We really liked the sushi. The fish was very fresh and the rolls were very unique. Tried the mars roll, awesome. Service was a bit slow, but given they opened just 3 weeks ago, I'd give them a break on that, and since the sushi was so good, I'm going with the rare 5 stars. Hope they can keep it up.

I have been there twice now since they have opened(10 days ago) once for lunch and once for dinner. Priced very reasonably and they have lunch specials. I love their spicy tuna rolls. Talked to the owner?? or manager, all their food is organic and comes from growing power or whole foods because growing power doesn't have everything they need. Food was great. Servers are very nice, I will be back often.

I moved back to Milwaukee from Portland Oregon and missed the sushi like I had on the West Coast, then Kawa opened and I was surprised by, and loved how much it reminded me of the sushi have had in the past. Kawa is by far the best in the Milwaukee area if not the Midwest! I can't say anything bad about the place, the great people who work there or the Sushi which is outstanding! Try everything, I have tried a lot of what they have and it is all great!

This restaurant was a nice surprise. I went in there not expecting much. The decor is great, the service was wonderful, the food was delicious. Not the best sushi I had, but it was very fresh, and tasted good. The only thing I didn't care for much was the miso soup. I shared the love boat and everything was tasting good! Plenty for two people. The waitress was super nice and helpful.

We had previously been going to another local sushi restaurant. I doubt we will ever darken their door again. Kawa had great service, fun decor, and amazing maki. I recommend stopping in to give this place a try!

Love it. Super fresh and tasty!! Kawa is starting off great. Love the beautiful black and white decor. The service is superb and the sushi is delicious. The crispy crab roll rocks and the toro was incredible. Hope this restaurant is really successful. We were there on the 3rd day of operation and the only flaw was they were out of uni (my favorite). The owner was so nice and told me when she gets it (Tuesday and Friday) and said to call ahead to reserve some. I will definitely do that. Can't wait to try it.

After coming to WI from Northern CA we struggled to find a local sushi joint that can deliver on service and most importantly fish. Kawa is the best Sushi restaurant in Milwaukee we have been too, its not even close. The owner takes extreme pride in her restaurant and her food. The fish is fresh and presented elegantly and simply. They go out of our way to make us feel welcome, to the point of having their Kitty mascot come and personally say Hi to our kids because they wanted to meet him. The owner brings us new things to try complimentary, like Japanese soda for the kids. They love it!!! We have only had sushi and rolls and not any of the other dishes but I am confident in their quality. My wife is from Hawaii and she knows fresh fish and Kawa passes muster. I will admit, I have been to better Sushi restaurants around the world, and am always quite hesitant to give an actual 5 star rating to ANY restaurant. Kawa tries harder and delivers, creating delicious sushi in MILWAUKEE! That is worth a 5 star. Congrats Kawa.

When I walked into Kawa today (for the first time) I was impressed by the decor, but after looking at the workmanship for more than a minute you can tell that it wasn't professionally done. But, decor alone isn't what's going to make, or break a new restaurant... It's the food. I ordered the sushi lunch special and it's nothing to be proud of. My coworker and I found it odd that the fish was room temperature. The last piece of sushi was really fishy, and I'm hoping I don't get food poisoning and waste a sunny and warm Wisconsin weekend. Also, the rice was too sweet for my taste, and I couldn't even taste vinegar on the rice. Another issue was the chopsticks. I don't know what they used to treat the wood in those chopsticks, but they need to find a different company to buy those from. It left terrible taste in my mouth, and I had to finish my meal without them. Another minor complaint is the hand soap. It smells like cheap perfume, and the scent is very strong. I had to wash my hands again after I got back to work because the fragrance was giving me a headache. If you really want to try Kawa for yourselves then please do, but I would not recommend this place to anyone. I think Lemongrab can sum up how I feel about this place... youtube.com/watch?v=07So…
