I went here for lunch. I walked in and waited for five minutes before I even seen an employee so I sat at the bar. It was a little after 12 pm and one person was trying to handle all the people, there had to be 15 people trying to get service. It was odd that I didn't get chips and salsa because I had placed my order and I was drinking my margarita. I ordered the 3 piece combo plater. I like how you can choose three items from the list and then choose the meat for each item. I chose the steak mini burrito, al pastor enchilada and ground beef tostada. You get rice and beans with the dinner and a side of sour creme. See my pictures. My strawberry margarita was good and came out of a slurpee machine. Three flavors are waiting to go. I would rather have had a fresh one because it melted pretty fast. The chips and salsa came with my dinner for some dumb reason, I thought you snack on chips and salsa before your food comes. The salsa was very mild and needs a little kick and some cilantro for flavor. The plate was meaty and cheesy. The food was hot and the cheese was melty. The mini beef burrito had big chunks of moist steak. The al pastor enchilada also had big chunks of moist pork. I must warn people that the meat has fat and gristle, both the al pastor and steak. My close up of the end of the mini steak burrito you can see a chunk of fat on the bottom. I didn't get to the tostada. The beans were cheesy and hot. The gristle did drag down the stars by the way. Over all the plate was meaty, they didn't skimp on the meat at all. I did like the food even though it's not 100% authentic. Service sucked while I was there but they were under staffed at the time. I think on a different day it could have been 3 possibly 4 stars but I just happen to come in at the wrong time. I would go back and give them another try because I like the build your own combo plate. See the pictures I took and go on line to see there menu, on line menu prices are out of date. There is potential here and I would not completely rule them out so give them a try.

Tacos were bland and soggy! Salsa was too spicy and mild was too boring. Under staffed and poor service. Yea you can get dollar tacos on Tuesday but you truly get what you pay for...so don't expect much!

My wife and I enjoy this place. It's a closer drive for us instead of making the trip to Little Mexico of Milwaukee for the great restaurants. That said, we really enjoy it here. Except for the tall, middle aged, Hispanic, male waiter. He is an idiot. His service sucks. It's like you're bothering him when you have to ask for refills on your soda or salsa. I hate that guy.

I had to write another review because the food was great this time! Ordered Sopa de Mariscos and my wife and I asked the waiter if they could make it more spicier and wow it was excellent. The seafood dishes here are the best I have tasted compared to other Mexican restaurants that specialize in seafood. Once again excellent service and everyone in our group really enjoyed their food. The food has exceeded our expectations every time and 5 de Mayo has become our favorite Mexican restaurant.

I tried to recreate one of the first dates my husband and I were on. I chose this place because it was close to home and planned on having margaritas. 1. Margaritas chips and salsa were legit but the salsa was bland. If I would ever choose to return to this place, that is all I would recommend. 2. FOOD: I had the seafood enchiladas, tried that as it's Lent. Horrible. Chewy seafood, never have I had crab or lobster that was chewy. Doubt that was real crab. My husband had the giant burrito. It was not giant. But aside from size he can eat a whole burrito from QDoba. Much smaller here and was not finished as it was bland. We ate the rice and beans. 3. CLEANLINESS: Nothing terrible. But my fork had a sticker on it so had to steal an extra set from another table as who knows where the waiter was. 4. ATMOSPHERE : cute place nothing too special with the decor and they had a 2 piece mariachi band. The hosts and a waitress sat at one of the numerous empty tables rolling napkins chatting. Had a paper room divider screen blocking the kitchen view. Pretty much was colorful and looked cheap. 5. SERVICE: nothing special the waiter did not come around and check on us during our meal. When I had mentioned I didn't like the food (after he asked why i was not boxing up my meal) there was no apology or offer for anything to change it. Our bill was brought promptly thereafter, no discount. We were going to have desert and maybe another drink but since it was there we paid and left. Nothing like trying to keep the few people you have in a nearly empty restaurant on a Friday at 7. I would not recommend this place to anybody unless they were just going to have margaritas- because with a bottled mix and some tequila how can you mess that up?

excellent fish tacos, fresh tortilla chips, and delicious spicy salsa. I can't speak for anything else on the menu bc the fish tacos are way too good to ever want to order anything different.

My boyfriend and I randomly decided to come here and absolutely loved it! The food was extremely delicious and tasty! The drinks were reasonably priced. Great service! We definitely will be going back again. This will be our go-to place every time we are craving Mexican food!

My girlfriend and I were thoroughly impressed with this restaurant. We ordered a strawberry margarita, horchata, and the house Cinco de Mayo Fiesta fajitas. All of the food was excellent, including the chips and salsa. They had music playing outside because it was Cinco de Mayo and we received t-shirts and pictures. This place is AWESOME. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to have an excellent dining experience.

How great it is to have a neighborhood Mexican joint! Located on 84th & Morgan, Cinco De Mayo has taken over for another Mexican restaurant that is no longer there. I am happy they made the change because I did not care for the prior. Visited for the first time recently and I was happy to see that the integrity of the building has not changed much through the years. Nice, cozy, corner spot with a menu full of choices. Reasonable prices, friendly staff and an inviting atmosphere. Portion sizes are good, goof value for the money and the place looked pretty clean from what I could see. I was very pleased with the selections of food and drink. I ordered a quesadilla and it was delicious. My friend had fajitas and there was a good amount and leftovers for her to take home. Margaritas were delicious. Will be returning and bringing friends. I recommend you check it out.

They make a great house margarita on the rocks. My chicken taco was cold and flavorless. Salsa was very bland too. My dinner companion had fish tacos that were so hot (temperature) that they must have microwaved them. They were playing dance club music that was so loud, not a great dining atmosphere. To top it off they are using the cloth hand towel drying system in the restrooms. I would return (with a roll of paper towels for drying my hands in the restroom) maybe for the margarita but not the food.

Searching for a good Mexican food restaurant in Milwaukee we stumbled upon 5 de Mayo. Great salsa, good chips coupled with tasty fish tacos and burritos. Good atmosphere, friendly service and quick food delivery. Prices are right for a night out. Not on a major thoroughfare but don't let that stop you. Great place to eat with a good menu.

We love this place! The service is excellent everytime. They probably have the best margaritas I have ever had at a restaurant. The food is also great. It is hard to find good Mexican food for some reason. We have tried several things on the menu without any complaints. My favorite is the Fajita tacos plate (I think it is number 26 or 27 on the menu). I highly recommend this restaurant, you won't be disappointed! Updated Review: 12/4/2013 - We used to be extremely happy with this place. However, my neighbor got food poising there, and shortly after myself and my husband also got very ill after eating there.

Wow, what a nice, cozy restaurant. The mexican food is authentic, and value priced. The portions are perfect, so one is not taking a box home. I especially love their burritos, as they make them enchilada style for me without deep-frying them. Very nice. The atmosphere is nice, especially on Fridays! Great place to take the family without breaking your wallet!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
