We stopped in two weeks ago on a Wednesday, and we enjoyed the burger special. This was my first time here on a non-fish fry night, and the food was very good. I love how they have 3 different options for fries. Not to mention the endless variety of tap-beers. The service was great and we had a good time. I can see myself going back.

Place is great. Fish fry is excellent. Other food is good. Friendly staff and a great selection of micro brew that is always changing. One of my fav. Places to go. The wife likes it as well

Totally and utterly surprised by how much I enjoyed Benno's. I mean, I had heard some good things from trustworthy sources. "... great craft beer on draft. ... solid bar food. ... nice folks." (You know, just the requisite usual when it comes to recommendations and all of that.) What I wasn't prepared for was how much I fell in love with the space itself; maybe it was the novelty of being a first timer, but it felt as though the whole thing was designed to be MY perfect beer bar/pub. Just divey enough, just hipster enough, and just homey enough, all in my newest favorite suburban neighborhood to root for... THE DIRTY. (aka 'Stallis, aka Westallica) As has already been written, Benno's has a unique and impressive tap selection. Beer nerds, rejoice! I snagged a Deschutes wheated IPA that suited my tastebuds pretty damn perfectly at that exact moment: a nice balanced blend of wheat to hops. (Sub-topic for consideration: Why does wheat beer get such a bad rep with beer nerds? If any beer, especially wheat/Weiss is done well (read: isn't viscous to the point of being akin to a first time homebrew and is balanced in flavor profile), shouldn't it too be worthy of love? When did the wheat/Weiss beer become Merlot from Sideways?) Our bartender was a fun, friendly guy with an Australian accent who told us all about their Monday night punch card club. You get to ride the library ladder back and forth across the bar if you finish all the beers on their punch card, just FYI. (If you don't know, now ya know, and if you haven't been, now you know that there's a library ladder behind the bar. See: "this bar was designed to be my perfect beer bar/pub" point earlier in the review.) Important thing: I haven't eaten the food, but I certainly will, because Katie S says the cheese curds at Benno's rule and also, I will definitely be back to Benno's. Also, Katie S' review for this place is pretty great.

Benno's was a huge disappointment after hearing so many great things about it. We rolled in around 5pm on a Saturday with a group of 6. There was only one bartender working, which at first wasn't a big deal as there were only about 10 people in the bar. However, shortly after we arrived, two groups of 6 and 8 respectively showed up. We were told that if we sat in the dining area, the bar tender wouldn't be able to come and take orders but that there would be a server in "soon." We said "Fine, for drinks we'll order at the bar and then when the server arrives we'll close out with you." The bartender was cool with that. Well, the server showed up maybe fifteen minutes after that conversation and proceeded to completely ignore our table favoring the other two large groups. She never even once said hello, offered menus, or anything. Okay, we just kept ordering with the bartender and that included our food. Might as well give the tip to the one who wants it. The food was not. . .good. Out of the 6 of us in our group, four ordered food. The chicken fingers were dry, the fries were overdone, and the burgers were greasy and bland. What was truly criminal, however, were the sad state of the cheese curds. Half of the order had melted out of the breading, the rest were so heavily breaded you could barely taste the cheese. Very unsatisfying. The stuffed mushrooms were decent and the beer list is top notch. That's what gets it a second star.

I was so stoked to finally check out Benno's that I didn't even give it a personal shot before inviting a group of coworkers to meet here Friday night. We came in and there was no host at the host stand, though many tables were seated and being served, so eventually we just posted up at our own tables in the lounge area. No one ever noticed us or approached us so we went up to the bar ourselves and snagged a couple menus. Suffice to say that the tap selection was awesome, but it still adds up quickly. The staff weren't really giving the time of day for my questions, just wanted to pour beer - so beer it was. We wanted food and went back up to the bar to order - standard bar food, but not nearly as good. I got a crispy buffalo chicken wrap, my friend got the grilled buffalo chicken wrap and Joe got the nachos. Well we got two crispy chicken wraps and no nachos. After reminding them they came out, but they were thrown together, seemed to be microwaved and gross. We were not once EVER directly spoken to by staff, food was crummy... I just don't see the appeal aside from the beer honestly. I'd rather go somewhere else.

We started going her because of the amazing craft beer selection and the act that most of it s on-tap. We now equally enjoy the food. It's really more than bar food. The service has always been excellent even after we have brought 12 of our friends back with us.

I unfortunately can't give my dining experience from Bennos more than 1 star... Got their "Panini" special and ordered fries on the side (which were extra). The end result was a sandwich, not a "Panini" on crusty toasted white bread with a tiny chicken breast chunk in the middle. The fries (if you want to call them that) looked like they'd been pulled out of the garbage and were most certainly not fresh. I appreciate the effort that Bennos puts into their beer selections and the concepts that they are attempting with their menu, but the food execution is a massive failure.

Benno's highlight is their 20-odd tap count focusing on good midwestern microbrews. Otherwise their food is good by bar standards. Lots of seating.

Like all my favorite places, I hesitate to add them to Yelp...but the public must know what is good and what is GREAT, and Bennos is GREAT! By far our favorite townie bar in all of Milwaukee. We've been going there for a few years now. Once the staff gets to know you they are wonderful and friendly and kind. We love Bennos for the amazing micro brew tap selection....it used to be the reason we went there. Now we go for the food. They recently acquired a chef from Juniper 61 (which we love) and the food is simply amazing. I always like to get the Chicken Dinner (all homemade batter) with mashed potatoes and all the fixings for $8. It is a mountain of food and the price is great. Other standouts are the cheese curds and wings. They make their own ranch which is to die for too! My wife and I recently had a baby and we bring her in to the bar, and no one even gives us a second look, which I love. We can just be ourselves, have a great time enjoy some food and try a wonderful variety of beers. *Happy Hour is $1 off any beer* Check it out if you get a chance.

Still the best Perch Fish Fry in town. My parents like the cod - but I'm a Perch fan and this is awesome. I don't think I've had anything else. Millions of beers on tap. Love.

Great beer joint, good food. A Stallis must! Food is decent, pretty standard environment but their up keep of new beers is stellar. Marty runs a great bar with a friendly staff.

I found out about this place through Alcoholmanac and was happy I came across it. It is a modest place with a great on-tap beer selection, that is constantly rotating and reasonably priced. It definitely is not the most up-to-date decor wise, but it adds to the atmosphere and stays true to its intent: serving good drinks. I have not been there early enough to try their food and cannot speak to that, but the beer is more than reason enough to visit.

  • Samantha P.

Really good selection of drinks- especially beer. Great cheese curds and other apps. Don't care for their wonton motz "sticks" though. Nice place to enjoy a drink at night whether you're with a friend or a few people.

8/26/10 boyfriend and I went to Benno's for wings. As a bar, it's just ok -- worst sour I've ever tasted and very weak cocktails but the beer selection is fine. As a food place, skip it. We ordered "a pound" of .35 cent wings. They wouldn't let us do half and half of different flavors - all 10 had to be one flavor. That's ridiculous. THEN, the wings came and they were minuscule. TINY. We literally took pictures. Then after ordering, we found out 25 minutes later that my ribs were nonexistent so I cordially ordered a chicken breast and we laughingly wondered to each other if the breast would be from the same tiny chicken and be the size of a McNugget. It was SO small. Come ON. for almost 7 bucks, you cannot serve a chicken breast that small. Food gets a huge ZERO. The staff (bartender and server) were both very nice. I seriously wished we had not gone there though.

Our family has been going to Benno's for years so my rating is based upon years of experiences there. I have had burgers, Mexican, steaks and catered food there. We have had a few private parties and they are always accommodating and friendly. They put out a nice spread and you have a nice selection. (stay away from the slice turkey lunch meat though, not good) Bartenders are nice and very attentive. Benno's is nothing fancy but it's a nice place to meet up and have gatherings for our family. It was always Grandma's favorite. Conveniently located in West Allis down Greenfield Ave.

Waitress was very nice and attentive, and the burger was one of the best I've ever had: meaty, juicy, flavorful, every bit a bar burger. Good hole-in-the-wall feel to it, too.

We ventured in again because we liked it that much the first time. Seems like as good a reason as any, right? This particular trip had lost a little novelty, but it was still just dandy. The beer menu was still quite interesting, but less interesting than the last time. There were more things that I've seen already this time, but there were still some kooky tipples to try. -3 points. We had the cheese curds, which may easily have been the best cheese curds I've ever had. Light golden crust. Not to heavy or oily. Perfectly just-this-side-of-melted on the inside. Happy belly! 32 points. Both husband and I had burgers. The burgers are really very good here. I don't know how they make them or if any part of it is frozen, but it's tasty. They appear to put some actual seasoning on the burger itself, which is what I would do if I was grilling at home, but I'm not sure I've ever seen a restaurant do it. 11 points. Whilst eating, I watched a server on the edge of the dining room take a knife, spray something on it, wipe it down, and hand it to a customer. I don't know what prompted this action, but I want nothing to do with a spray-cleaned knife. -15 points. Our server this time, was just ok. She was nice, but she came across as perhaps just new? She didn't really know her stuff and wasn't particularly sociable. -4 points. Lastly, on our way out, I was busted for my last review by our previous server. Tee Hee! I have to apologize to my new friend for being legitimately confused at first and then not owning up once I figured out what was happening. You got me, all 18 points worth. 37 points for remembering us. 13 points for calling me out. 54 points for actually reading your Yelp reviews. However points that is, that's how many times I hope I come back.

Haven't been here since I moved, but seeing those pictures make me miss it! Nice bartenders, great beer selection, food is decent (I'm not much for fish frys). And they have a foosball table!! I'm not giving it 5 stars because I think they could get a little more creative with their salad options. But, it's not a big deal, I just fill up on good beer!

A group of us met here on Saturday night for a birthday party and we all really liked the place. They have good food. We had a round of appetizers including chicken wings, poppers, chips and salsa. I had the Reuben sandwich for dinner. Everyone has raved about the Fish Fry, but they only serve it on Friday nights. That was disappointing. Haven't really heard anyone comment on the ribs, so I didn't try them. That seems to be their specialty. The best thing was the truly amazing beer selection!! They had several special Mardi Gras beers today!! They have a nice room for a party. Our group size was about 16 and it was perfect for us. Unfortunately, the waitress told us she had to put all of our tabs on one check. This made for a very long and frustrating close out of our bill. She gave us exceleent service throughout the evening, but her life would have been so much easier if she could have split the bills up for us. Don't know what was up with that... After dinner, we played several games of darts on the electronic dart board and had a lot of fun. The bartenders were friendly and efficient. All in all, this was a great place to hang out.

Beer - point whole hog raspberry saison. really good! not berry weiss sweet ;) Mozz stix - these were wonton wrapped & the reason I love wonton is because they get so much crispier compared to the loose breading. These, however, weren't very crispy. Baked potato soup - lacked seasoning and texture that fresh ingredients could have provided such as bacon crumble, scallion, even shredded cheese on top. Good but not great. Jambalaya soup - it really wasn't "soup". There was No broth. It was so inundated with thyme seasoning, I couldn't Taste much else except a hint of heat. Reminded me of dirt. Not "earthy" in a good way! Would not ever get that again. Brisket - definitely the fattiest that I've ever had before. About 45% was inedible to me. Baked beans - prob the best thing on the visit aside from the beer and the cornbread biscuit that came with the jambalaya 'soup'. Slaw - while very fresh tasting, it was overdressed with wet mayo and needed salt & pepper. Garlic parmesan fries - also really fresh tasting but needed a shake of salt, just a pinch. yes Parmesan adds salt but it doesn't completely replace it. Prob won't come back. I'm not a big Stalis fan and this place wouldn't help convince me not to be. Nice try, though. The bartender/server was really nice.

Summary: Common bar, amazing selection of tappers in west dallis. Amazing selection of beer tappers. 30 tappers all worth trying. Friendly wait staff. Exactly what I was looking for. Decor is dated but who cares, your there for the beer. Every Wednesday, Benno's has a great deal for burgers. $5 build your own burger, hand-packed patties, tastes great. Highly recommended for beer enthusiasts.

I've always liked Benno's but never reviewed it, so here we go. They've got an outstanding selection of tap beers at reasonable prices, especially for Westallica. The fish fry I had was excellent and very reasonably priced for what you get. I think it was around $12 for 4 thick pieces of cod in a beer batter that wasn't too heavy that it overwhelmed the fish. They also offer baked cod, perch, and I think walleye. Plus potato pancakes are an option for your potato which is a bonus. I've also had their burger in the past and they're very tasty and only around $8. It can get a little crowded on Friday's due to the popular fish fry and the music was a little too loud for the restaurant area. But all in all it's one of my favorite bars when I'm in the Stallis area. Any place that has 30 taps with a brief description of each and lists the ABV on the menu gets a thumbs up from me.

The brisket was terrible...cold, dry, gray, and spoiled tasting. I thought I would get sick if I ate it

  • Linn E.

The excellent beer selection is a given - what blindsided us was how fantastic the smoked meats are. The ribs are done perfectly - tender but not fall-off-the bone, with a good heat to the dry rub. The brisket was smokey, tender and beefy. The rib dinner was an amazing value at $16 and included mashed potatoes, baked beans, coleslaw and a corn muffin. We honestly figured at that price the ribs would be mediocre but they've really got them dialed in.

Here is my M.O. at Benno's: Shove lots and lots of food into my face, try a number of beers and see what happens. The results are usually favorable. I'll try to be diplomatic here. I, like many Milwaukeeans, have a very tenuous relationship with West Allis. It is awesome if you like NASCAR, smoking Newports and drinking Diet Mountain Dew with breakfast, but for the rest of us it is adrift in a sea of fast food and corner bars that we dare not venture into. I'm sorry, but this is how I feel. Benno's is the best contradiction to the norm in The Dirty. Beer? Damn right. One of the best lists in town. They consistently tap local favorites and great stuff from around the country. A recent trip yielded Hop Czar from Bridgeport Brewing. Great stuff. My favorite part of Benno's really has to do with what it doesn't have: Asswipes. I live in Bay View and while I love some of the beer bars in the neighborhood, some people are just way too damn cool for their own good. ZERO pretense at Benno's. I've gotten schnockered out of my shit with complete strangers here, because that's the kind of place it is. The bartenders are great, the patrons are awesome and the whole place has a vibe that makes you feel as if you're among friends. Food? Hell yeah. I've been going to Benno's for wings for years and I've just recently discovered some of their other awesomeness. Go for the fish fry, it rules. All of their food is homemade, which is a huge plus for a bar. I love the wings, the garlic fries and recently had a piece of their awesome carrot cake. The burgers are tasty as well. Can you tell that I really, really love this place?

Bennos! 4.5 Stars! Holy crap, I walked in and it was like looking at a Christmas tree - the beers on tap alone made me want to pitch a tent and live in the back room area forever. I have not tried the food, so my review is based solely on the beers on tap, service, and ambiance. However, I've heard their food is some of the best, and I'd love to come back to grab some food to see what the hype is about. In the mood to find a quiet corner bar, to have some good conversation, beer, and not break the bank? Bennos is definitely the place. It is located in the heart of ol' Stallis, but don't fret - street parking is (usually) readily available. You can actually hear what your friends are saying, and you won't have to shout over obnoxious music, or total jag-bags at the bar - all while enjoying some of the best beers that are available on tap in the Milwaukee area (which change on a regular basis). Friendly servers - they'll let you try a snifter of which ale you'd be interested in before making the big jump. I've always had good service here, and we will continue to come back when we can.

I guess I might be biased because this is the first bar I went to when I turned 21. Or because my fiance and I can be spotted here nearly every Saturday night. We love this place! 4 words: Thirty beers on tap. Don't be that douche who orders a Miller Lite. You can get SO much better. The selections do rotate, so you don't have to drink the same thing all the time if you don't want to. The bartenders are all excellent. Friendly, funny, and they KNOW their beer. The food is outstanding! I recommend the cordon bleu wrap, the ribs, and the machos nachos (get the pulled pork on 'em). I may live in Stallis, but I don't go out there much, unless I am going to Benno's. Try it out! PS: Not exactly the place to bring your kids. I like to play "Big Dumb Sex" and curse. A LOT. :)

When i moved to West Allis a few years ago I was just pickled tink when i realized that a great bar, with great food and great service, was but a few block walk (stumble) away from my house! Bennos, i thee love. One of the ways i judge a place is very simple: when on the TV the brewers score or make a great play, do people in the bar clap? Yes...they clap at Bennos. they clap, cheer and I've even partaken in an occasional high-five. Let us start with a great beer selection. Staff is very knowledgeable and will help you decide which beer you wish to enjoy. The taps change regularly, and always have a great mix of local and not-so-local brews. Of course, i want to see more Upland on tap! You will be greeted with one of the best Fish Fry options in town when you arrive on a Friday night. A great selection and a variety of preparation options. I don't do the fry route, so i enjoy the blackened or baked. Great selection, wonderful sides. Soups are always great and homemade. I've often enjoyed their Cajun catfish po boy too. What i love most of Bennos is the calm and friendly atmosphere. I often go alone and sit at the bar, I always am welcomed into conversation and chatter with the bartenders or other patrons. Just a super friend, super West Allis place. Go and enjoy.

We used to go there on average about every other week for their wing specials and some other things. The food is decent and they have a lot of great beers. We don't go any more because the last 3 times we went the service was just plain rude and dismissive. I'm adding to this review because I realized it's not very informative about what I felt made the service rude. We had the same waitress the last several times and every time we did, she talked to my boyfriend nicely and was short and rude to me. I thought I was crazy until he mentioned it to me and I was like yeah I kind of though that was what was happening. Now you would have thought she got the picture after the second time in a row when I paid the bill, and I paid the tip. In addition to this she spent the majority of time flirting with a table of dudes, not once but on two visits. She practically growled at me when I asked for some utensils after sitting there for several minutes with my food and no utensils. Maybe they want this place to be a big sausage fest...if so, they got it. Not the best business tactic though. It's a shame because they have an awesome beer selection and I actually like the wings (but I kind of like my wings small and slightly overcooked).

Seems like the only people not sold on Benno's haven't evolved sophisticated beer palates. You know, like adults and stuff. If you want a Miller Shite or a sweet vodka red bull, there are literally 1.7 million derelict, white trash hookup bars in Stallis. Try one of those but bring plenty of roofie antidote (I'm looking at you Paulie's). Benno's is THE place to go for beers of all styles and for the most discerning, snobby palates. The staff is incredible (Jess and K.J. are two of the friendliest people I know, let alone bartenders). If you're looking for high quality and low amounts of Stallis horse apples, treat yourself to Benno's.

Stopped in with some family to check out the beer selection, as well as kick back and relax.... And did just that. Local hangout with a beer selection in the 40's, consisting of plenty micro-brew and craft beers on tap and bottled. Darts, jukebox, and a mellow crowd (with the exception of the drunk U of Wisconsin fans screaming at the TV) made it an enjoyable experience for the out-of-towners. The bar bill, from what I can (or can't) remember was reasonable too. Who paid that by the way?

    (4)
  • Kristy K.

Benno's is just your average corner bar with a better beer selection. there are at least 20 different varieties that focus on micro brews and imports. The food is typical bar food with fish fries on Friday. The one highlight on the menu is the home made soups. The gumbo and clam chowder are always good, and often we will stop in just for a beer and a bowl.

A fun Stallis establishment! They usually have nightly specials (food & bev) and they have quite the beer selection! They do have outdoor seating, too!
