I was recently in Menomonie for a conference, and some friends and I were really craving comfort food. Two of us are vegetarian, and this place came up immediately in Yelp. I don't know why, though, because there are very few vegetarian options. However, the sides I ordered (hash browns, biscuits, applesauce, buttered corn) all hit the spot. The popovers were also excellent (and the waitress brought a second round because we had been waiting for a while). I wanted to try the cream puffs because I'd seen good reviews and got the Bavarian cream (and also had the option for chocolate and Oreo/gummy worms??). I think I got my hopes up from all the glowing reviews. There was a lot more (heavy) cream than I expected and a distinct egg taste, but it was fine. Friends who ate meat really enjoyed the Norwegian meatloaf.

I want you to take everything you know about "Norske"s and "Kro"s and toss it out the window. Good. Did you do it? No? I have a feeling you didn't and there's still a little Kro-knowledge you're holding back. Let it go. Of course, it was easy for me because the name means shit to this mutt. You know when you eat Mexican (food, not people), how they give you chips (food, not people)? Well this place gives you popovers. I didn't know what a popover was. At first I thought it was stupid; just a bloated biscuit or a bland muffin lacking berries and other things. But that's me. Then I stuffed it with crap and the light shone upon me brother! This thing is a multi-purpose wonder of Thor. Stuffed it with eggs. Stuffed it with sausage. STUFFED IT WITH ANOTHER POPOVER AND MADE A POPCEPTION!

A hidden gem outside of the main part of Menomonie! Food is great, service is great, and just about everything is made in-house. The popovers that are brought out to start are flaky and just the right amount of sweet. We split a Hawaiian chicken sandwich, which was very good! The meat itself was wonderful, and the sauce and toasted bun really brought everything together. The sweet pickle that came on the side was incredible! The chocolate cream puff is TO DIE FOR. But what really makes it? Request a side of the strawberry jam. Absolutely heavenly with the chocolate cream puff! Definitely not an experience to be missed!

This was a great find! The homemade sauerkraut was the highlight. They were out of the bratstickers so we got the cheese nerds which were awesome. The popovers were brought out when fresh and hot and were delicious. The staff was extra friendly too!

I was so impressed with the food, service, and prices, that I had both lunch and dinner two days in a row here. I found that the food tasted homecooked, the service was phenomenal, and the prices surprisingly low for the amount and quality. I tried the corned beef, meatballs, ribs, and cream puff. I found that the meatballs were my favorite, followed by the corned beef, cream puff, and lastly ribs. I chose the apple sauce as the side, and it might be the best apple sauce that I've had. I also found that the mashed potatoes might be the best I've had in a restaurant. Everything has ample butter and cream making it taste great, and is the perfect hearty meal on a -21 F day. I'll go back here without hesitation.

This was incredible for an unexpected and unassuming stop just off the freeway. The Yelp reviews are to be trusted, and this place is (almost) as good as it gets. The menu had so many interesting options, it made it very difficult to choose. However, it was Sunday night and that means all-you-can-eat fried chicken dinner, so I couldn't help myself. The first thing that came out was the popover bread they are known for. It was served with strawberry butter. They were fantastic. Should that have been my entire meal (well, more of them), I'd have been very happy. Next to come out was a salad, and it wasn't the typical iceberg with bland dressing. It was mixed greens with some veggies and house made dressing (I had the blue cheese, yum). The fried chicken came out with the typical sides. The mashed potatoes and gravy were very good, the corn was pretty much just corn. The chicken was perfectly crisp without being too greasy, and was perfectly tender and juicy inside. (I thought it was a weeee bit too salty, but it didn't stop me from enjoying every bite.) The original served portion was so generous I had 2 pieces to take home without reordering. On top of this the service was friendly and fantastic. Our server gave us an sincere smile and welcome, made some small talk, and genuinely seemed interested in us. I could hear that the other server with the table behind us was just as good. I wish I lived closer so I could return and try more things from the menu. Every time I drive through, I will make a point to stop in again. I recommend this stop for anyone and everyone... foodies, farmers, relatives from out of town, it doesn't matter. It's a great stop.

Good food with great country hospitality! I have never had a popover before so I can't compare but I can try to explain, its a yummy airy pastry, that is light, buttery, and a little egg-y. The popover meals are these pastry treats opened with potatoes, meat, and gravy on top. I had the turkey one which was a great twist on a thanksgiving meal. We also ordered the pork one which was very moist and flavourful. I will say both plates were large, we could have shared one. For everyone traveling with kids - I am always thankful when I can find a children's menu with other items besides a hamburger or chicken nuggets. They had a grilled chicken skewer with rice, a soup/salad combo, or homemade Mac and cheese. We ordered one of each, the kids ate everything. Although the food was good, the wait staff was great. Everyone from the hostess, to the bartender, to our waitress were so nice and very helpful. So glad we stopped here on our drive to Minnesota.

I have a mixed review, and maybe I should give it more stars. I am new to the area, and I am trying out many of the local sites that get good reviews on Yelp. So tonight we went to the Norske Kitchen & Kro. My wife is gluten free, and dairy free, and I admit I am a little picky about my fish. First of all, the popovers are fantastic, and my food was well done. The beer is good. This is why it gets four stars. The server we had tonight was new, or not fully trained, and that marred my first experience, and so the first impression was not all it could be. We were looking at our first fish fry after moving to Wisconsin, and the waitress did not seem knowledgeable about the menu at all. She was clueless that there was a baked fish option that was not breaded (and gluten free) to the fish fry friday special, and was getting really flustered when my wife was asking for a substitution for the sides to the only baked fish that seemed to be on their menu so she could get what she wanted. At the end I got the fish fry with the hash browns that my wife was craving, and she got a baked fish that has mashed potatoes that she could not eat (milk), and we switched them on the plate. In comparison, after our order was already in, a couple at the table next to us had a young man who was on the ball, and knowledgeable of the food, and if I try the Norse Kitchen again, I want to pick who serves me. His mentioning to them that there was a baked fish option to the fish fry is how we found out about it. Sheesh! Anyway, in all fairness, our server was attentive, if not knowledgeable, and I am sure in time she will get better. Secondly, I know I am in Wisconsin, and this is a slightly Norwegen themed comfort food place, but what kind of place serves fried fish, and does not have malt vinegar???????? Double sheesh!!!!! Tartar sauce does not always agree with me, so my only option was salt and pepper. So I know their service can be good, we just did not get as good as we could have on our first visit. I will try again in a few weeks. And bring my own malt vinegar for the fish.

If your looking for something different this is the place. The Rachel is the star. What a sandwich. Popovers. This was something new I had never heard or tried. A twist on the roll. Sunday's they offer strawberry butter with the complimentary popovers. No words. Too many good things to list. Don't let the exterior fool you. This place is now my regular go to place.

My Fiancé have stopped in here twice on road trips back home to the Twin Cities. When you walk in the door it has a homey Midwestern feel. They are undergoing some changes in the bar area which are great. They have a small tap selection but what they have is great for local/ WI brew flavor. Both times we stopped in have been quiet, but that is probably due to it being evenings on either Sunday or Monday. Hopefully this places starts to get a bit busy but I wouldn't mind it staying a bit of a secret. They have Great food and good, friendly service. The food is all made from scratch including their sauces and dressings. The Thai Soup was to die for and my Burger was both massive and Delicious. Can't wait to stop in again!

What a gem on the side of a highway in Wisconsin. Wow. Free popovers that will blow your mind. I had the Reuben and my friend had the fish sandwich. Both were amazing. My friend thought it was one of the best fish sandwiches she's ever had. And the service was great. Really nice people.

Great food and delicious popovovers. It is certainly worth the drive for some excellent, homestyle food. The Thai Chicken soup was unexpected, but absolutely amazing!

Wow-- great homemade "comfort food" (as advertised!) in the relative middle-of-nowhere. Me and my kid went with the stuffed popovers (stuffed with pulled pork and mashed potatoes, and topped with a mixture of dressing and gravy). As my kid said-- "this tastes like Thanksgiving!" (woulda tasted even more like Thanksgiving if we got the turkey-stuffed popovers). My wife's salad looked pretty pedestrian, but I'm not rating this place based on that! My youngest liked his chicken strips. I'll skip reviewing the other family-friendly restaurant on the north side of the highway, other than to say it is not half as good as this place (though they do serve breakfast all day, unlike Norske Kitchen). So if you're just passing through and looking to eat, go here! Hope we have the opportunity to drive through again. Oh-- the sign you see says "EAT" (you cant miss it)-- we thought the restaurant might have changed hands till we got to the door and saw the sign...
(4)Kate B.
I am never disappointed when dining here. The popovers are served hot and the salmon is perfect! The homemade applesauce and mashed potatoes are delicious. This is most definitely my favorite place to eat!
(5)Chaia K.
They bring you fresh-right-from-the-oven popovers to you when you sit down, all you can eat fried chicken on Sundays and friendly service. What more could you want?! Their ruben is amazeballs and their cream puffs are pretty bomb.com too.
(5)Lisa P.
This will become a regular stop when traveling on I-94. The food is great. It starts with complementary hot popovers (with strawberry butter on our Sunday morning stop). They specialize in popovers and cream puffs, and both are worth getting. There are only limited options for vegetarians. Easy access from the highway and the staff is ver friendly!
(5)Apple L.
Very good food and service. The location is convenient, just off the highway. Highly recommended.

I've now eaten here three times, which I think is enough to justify a review. In general, the Menomonie "dining scene" is pretty nonexistent, but Norske Kitchen is really upping the ante. Every experience I've had here has been brimming with positive vibes. You want more? Okay, here we go. Its location is a little weird; it's just off I-94, exit 45. Kind of off the beaten path for the townies, but PERFECT for anyone working at the Industrial Park, 3M, or anyone looking for a place to eat off the highway. It's in a refitted Country Kitchen, next to a Kwik Trip, and as of this writing the big sign is still blank. However, don't let any of that dissuade you! The food is very good. These guys are trying to blend the traditional Sconnie supper club vibe with a bit of a farm-to-table idea, and give it a brighter, more modern feel in the process. And it's totally working. First off, there are complimentary popovers that are brought out "whenever they're done," and they're outstanding. I had the Juicy Lucy one night and was pretty impressed; I had a sauerkraut platter another night and was suitably happy with my choice. My wife LOVED her fish sticks, as well as the Old Fashioneds. We also hit breakfast one time--the food was delicious, but there was a LOT of it. be forewarned! Portion sizes on the dinners are less enormous, but still decent. Prices are very reasonable. We also enjoyed a delicious cream puff, but to be honest, I was too full to really savor it. I haven't done it yet, but Norske Kitchen would be a good place to go for just happy hour, or perhaps a late night snack. All in all, this place is a very welcome edition to the Chippewa Valley. I wish them much success and hope to contribute to that success, using both my money and my appetite.

The food and the customer service was fantastic. I had the all you can eat southern fried chicken. It came with all the southern fixings. They have this whole made strawberry butter for there whole made pop overs. Which are to die for. They have different toppings also that you can put in these popovers. What I also like is that a lot of stuff is whole made and from scratch. So stop by have some great Norwegian food.

Traveling from Wyoming, MN to Madison, stopped on a whim because of large EAT sign, interesting. Popovers, wonderful, Reuben sandwich tasty and huge. Wait staff friendly & efficient. Well worth the stop. Highly recommend.

I absolutely love this place and always have to stop here on sundays for the All-you-can-eat Fried chicken. Every thing is home made and taste delicious!!! Their menu is large enough to give everyone options. On sundays, they also give you popovers and strawberry butter while you wait for your food. The price is a little high for the area, but everything is worth it. The only flaw I have is that the booths are not comfy. I highly recommend this place!!

Great food and great service! We had fish fry and a kraut platter. Complimentary popovers that came with our lunch were on point. Well designed menu with lots to choose from without being overwhelming. Even if it hadn't been pointed out to us, everything we ordered definitely had great tasting homemade quality. Highlights: mashed and gravy, fried fish, super friendly and informative server. If you're looking for a spot to stop off at, it would be hard to find a more convenient place than this, and if you did, I guarantee the food isn't as good.

We stopped in today with the grandchildren who live in Menomonie. We always stay at the Quality Inn next door and have always gone elsewhere to eat but never again, the food here is some of the best we have had in the area over the years. The children's meals were the basic chicken strips and fries but they just loved the small popover treat and coloring kit to keep them occupied. Each to there own but the chicken and biscuits is something any Norwegian grandma would be glad to present as her own however top marks go to the Turkey and mash filled popover, what a meal and highly recommended. The table next to us had the cod meal snd for sure this will be my next meal. The service was excellent and the food great, might do a breakfast in the morning before heading back to Atlanta

YUMMY! Loved the complimentary popover when seated. Ordered the roasted roma tomato soup--very satisfying and creamy. Wish I had saved room for a cream puff for dessert. Staff very helpful, friendly, and had a great time. Will be back for more. Loved the huge EAT sign--a landmark!

If you want breakfast on the interstate and loath chains, this is a good, economical stop.
(4)Kristina T.
Ok, the strawberry butter served on Sundays with the popovers is probably one of the happiest things that I have ever had. The combo might have been even better than my cream puff! Definitely a worthwhile stop for road trips off of 94. Stuffed popover was very filling and you could taste the care that went into it. If you want to save money, by all means you can do so at a place where they merely assemble your food instead of interacting with it. Spend a few bucks more (or the same, this place is very reasonable) and consider it a worthy investment.

This is some really great food. The reason it's good? It is UNBELIEVABLY UNHEALTHY. But nothing's wrong with that every so often, so indulge yourself and head over to the Norske Kitchen and Kru (pronounced "crow"). As an example: their idea of bread is popovers, their idea of veggies is corn or potatoes, and their idea of dessert is cream puffs. You won't find much color outside the yellow/brown/white food groups at this place (just look at my pictures for proof). Breakfast is fantastic, with tons of greasiness, and the dinners feature a giant menu of midwestern/german/norwegian goodness. The wait can be somewhat long, as it is a big restaurant, but worth it. If you go at night, be sure to order an old fashioned - I've been impressed with the fact that they actually know how to make it right (muddled). Let's just hope they update the decor a bit more, as the cheesy cow posters are a bit too much for me...

Norske Kitchen could definitely be classified as a comfort food locale, especially for those with Scandinavian or German family traditions. First off, the popovers, which were served fresh from the pan, were perfectly creamy/eggy inside with a nice crispy shell. My wife and kids had the fried chicken, of which they devoured. I had the kraut platter with knockwurst and spare-ribs. The knockwurst had a really good consistency and flavor with a nice natural crispy casing. The sauerkraut had a good balance of sweet and sour that went perfectly with the meat pairings. Oh, and don;t forget the homemade applesauce, that was delicious, the only thing I would change would be to make it chunky, but that is a personal preference. The only downsides were that the seats were so used that cushioning was almost non-existent, but they are in the middle of renovating and the rest of the decor, and atmosphere was clean and polished. The other downside was the fact that the food was so good, so plentiful, and so filling that none of us had room for lefse!

WOW ! Come hungry !! We just happened on this place . dynamite breakfast with traditional and nontraditional breakfast choices. Potato pancakes , biscuits and gravy were all excellent... Friday fish fry excellent..... will be back... immediately on/off of I-94 ..... great prices for the amount of food !!
(5)Erika S.
This one is great for all the sconnies. $1.99 Brandy old fashions at happy hour, great fish fry, free popovers, really nice owners and wait staff. Have been to dinner twice and the food and drinks were great and reasonably priced. A breakfast trip proved to be pretty good as well, though a bit slower.

Do not know why people are thinking this place is so good. Our experience was just the opposite. The popovers offered in the beginning were just okay and that was the highlight of the visit. My wife had a ruben sandwich that was stacked so high that you could not eat it without making a serious mess. In addition, the ingredients of the sandwich seemed to be days old. They had a stale and leathery taste and texture. She did not eat hardly any of it since it was basically uneatable. I had their steak and eggs. It was absolutely horrible. The 7oz. New York Strip steak was more like a hamburger patty. It was about ¼" thick and badly overcooked. The 3-eggs were to be scrambled, but it was more like 3-eggs fried on a stove top in a bucket of butter. They were the most slimy, undercooked eggs I have ever seen. I was able to eat less than 25% of the steak and only a few bites of the eggs. Overall, both mine and my wife's meals were really bad. Add to that the fact that both of us got sick from the food several hours later, I do not see why anybody would ever eat here.
