I am reviewing Pogreba's Catering. My husband and I recently were married in the La Crosse area. We currently live in Chicago, so planning our wedding long distance posed a challenge. Finding our venue was a no brainer (Norskedalen Nature and Heritage Center) although finding our cater was a big question mark. After a few failed attempts to contact some local caters I was directed towards Pogreba's. Having been a waitress in the La Crosse area for 6 years, I had never heard of Pogreb'as. Come to learn, it was a new restaurant (post my move to Chicago) but the catering business had been around for years! My first attempt to contact Pogreba's was responded promptly with enthusiasm and information to guide my searching. Josh, the owner of Pogreba's, was INCREDIBLE with communication. This was the largest appeal to working with them as our wedding cater. He offered menu modifications, collaboration to meet our food desires, photos of plates, glasses and silver! If you are a bride who plans visually, this helped me visualize my tables! He also didn't try to pull the wool over our eyes, he was straight forward with cost and didn't surprise us in the end with unexpected costs! I could go on and on about Josh's excellent communication it was truly wonderful! T he food .... oh the food!! First off, we were offered a free food tasting of everything we had selected for our wedding menu. (So fun!) Our guide of the dinner, Ester, was a doll and very educated!! This experience eased my concerns about planning long distance, as I knew we were in good hands. Low and behold it was finally our wedding week. Josh was excellent at checking in, first off asking me how I was doing! Great way to start a conversation with a bride-to-be! Josh was excellent with arranging set up of our tables, bringing high chairs to our venue, and even brought an extra bottle of booze because we ran out right away! I heard over and over from our guests that the meal was the best wedding food they had ever eaten - meat option and veggie option! All in all, we couldn't have asked for a better cater and want to recommend them to everyone to consider them as their wedding caters! You will not be disappointed and it will also not kill your budget! Our wedding menu was as follows: - Salad with red onion, goat cheese, beets and an onion vinaigrette - Assorted buns with herb whipped butter - Pork Ribeye - Sauteed Kale - Loose Corn - Roasted Baby Red Potatoes Also, we had a late night snack - single servings of pulled bbq chicken sliders and brats with sour kraut!!

This was our first stop here and all in, we enjoyed it. The place is well done inside, clean, warm and enjoyable. The service was good and all 4 of us really liked our entrees. My ribeye was excellent, tender and well prepared. My wife had the salmon and said it was perfect. The service was good, the food was hot and I have no real complaints. The price was comparable with other upscale restaurants in the area. I would say its quality is also comparable.

We had dinner there tonight. February 18, 2015. I had the salmon, my husband had the lamb shank which was the special. Both were delicious. Better than at any other restaurant we have been to. I asked the server to ask the chef to not add salt to my food. (salt so not good for you) and the chef did not add extra salt. Great dinning experience. Server, Brent, was pleasant and very helpful.

I've dined here twice now. The first time last year I was unable to get a glass of dry white wine. Everything was so sweet or by the bottle. I can't drink an entire bottle by myself and my dining partner was trying their beer selection which was good. Our food was acceptable and we hadn't returned until now. This time we were dining with friends at 8 pm. Our server was in such a rush it made us uncomfortable. He asked for our order 4 times after we got drinks in the span of 10 minutes. We were visiting and trying to enjoy a relaxed evening. We did order the pork belly confit with kimchi, it was good but quite a mess on the plate. We also had the margheritta flatbread which everyone enjoyed. Two people ordered steaks and they were perfectly prepared. Two ordered the seafood curry. We were told it was not spicy, which was correct. It was sweet. It was also so incredibly oily and heavy that we were unable to finish it. This is not a place that I need to return to but since I have one more $25 gift card I will probably try for a lunch.

OooommmmmGgggggg! We dragged our feet about trying out Pogreba's, and I can't really say why. we had been to Pogy's at that location probably 20 years ago. And while I remembered that it was nice, it certainly wasn't anything particularly memorable. All I can say now is that things have really changed. Pogreba's has spoiled me for steak in any other restaurant in the Midwest. Maybe any other restaurant in the country. I have been to Ruth's Chris steakhouse; I have been to Murray's ; I have been to many great steak places. But I have NEVER had a steak that was better than the grilled ribeye that I had at Pogreba's tonight. The cheese curds with bacon were unusual. I can see that they would appeal to many people, but they weren't really my cup of tea. The house salad however was perfect; it was lightly dressed with a balsamic dressing that was delicious. It was so good, in fact, that I almost thought about ending my meal right there. But the smoky smell in the room made me look forward to the ribeye that I had luckily chosen from their fairly well rounded menu. I had ordered the steak rare. I ALWAYS order my meal rare, and am seldom served a steak that's correctly cooked. Tonight was a noticeable exception to that. The plate-sized ribeye came with a crusty brown exterior, and the meat was meltingly delicious. I was surprised to see crisp-tender broccoli and a whole bulb of nutty brown roasted garlic on the plate, along with a huge scoop of mashed Yukon Gold potatoes. I'm not sure, but I think that the meat must've been prime. But I think that the real secret was the charcoal fire grill that they cooked it on. If all of us could get our outside grills to get to a high enough temperature, we might be able to replicate this type of heaven at home. But until I can turn my gas grill up to 1800, it's just not going to happen. Our server, Taylor, was awesome. She was informative and attentive. She certainly added to our already great experience. If you're looking here for me to say something negative, you're going to be disappointed. My own disappointment lies in the fact that I haven't gone to Pogreba's earlier. We had an awesome dinner. I feel sorry for my vegetarian friends!

We've eaten at Pogreba several times since it opened a few years ago. When they first opened they were struggling to get it all together. Either the food was good and the service was bad,or the other way around. Now however, they have all the kinks worked out. Great food and excellent service. We went last night for Valentine's Day with another couple and everything was top notch. It's definitely on our short list of go to places for date night.

We go to Pogreba 5 to 7 times a year and are big fans. Last night I had the filet, medium rare, but with the cabinet reduction instead of blue cheese crust. It was outstanding. As good as steak served anywhere, the charcoal/hickory crust, was nicely salted, potatoes, beans were all good. She had the scallops/shrimp risotto. Also outstanding. I'll post pictures. Anyway, I was surprised by the 2.5 stars presently granted, We eat out a lot and consider Pogreba in the tops of LaCrosse.

What is up with the televisions that have a slideshow rolling?? Pogreba is considerably nicer inside than you would expect from looking at the outside. The service was good but I was utterly unimpressed with their food. Initially, I thought maybe it was run by the same people who own Piggy's. The font on the drink menus is very similar and it seemed to have the same slightly smoky, delicious smell. After eating, it was quite apparent that Pogreba has little in common with Piggy's. A couple of friends and I met up here for a birthday. We started out dinner with the crab dip which came on a sheet of pita bread that wasn't completely cut apart. So there we all sat, disseminating the bread and crab dip with our hands. Kinda gross. For the main course, I had the salmon with asparagus and mashed potatoes. Potatoes are one of the things that I do not indulge in nearly enough. Unfortunately, these potatoes were so saturated with salt, they were not even edible. So disappointing! My salmon had an aioli on top that tasted like mayonnaise and since the salmon was served room temperature, it was easy to take off. The best part of the meal was our server, Paul. He was personable and did a great job. Too bad the rest of the experience was lacking.

Excellent food, staff and variety. Stop by you will not be disapointed. You will always find a dish to melt in your mouth.

They got one thing right, atmosphere. Pogreba has a great environment. Unfortunately I stopped being impressed after that. I ordered the steak special on Saturday night. It was good, but I was disappointed with how fatty it was. I expected a much better cut from a restaurant like this. My wife ordered a ravioli with a lobster tail. She said it was "Nothing to write home about". After that we got our bill, and believe me, that was worth writing home about. I couldn't believe I was charged $9.00 for a can of beer. I would consider coming back if the prices were more reasonable, but I have better things to blow $100.00 on.

I went to Pogreba for lunch with colleagues. Atmosphere: I have to admit, I was positively impressed by the renovation and interior update that Pogreba has done. It is tastefully done with good attention to detail and it has a custom feel and uniqueness to it. The main dining area isn't huge but it has very tall ceilings, which give it a very open and airy feel. Food: Having only eaten at Pogreba once, I can't give you a long term prognosis but can say that my experience was positive. I had the bacon wrapped cheese curds as an appetizer and the BSLT (Baconsteak Lettuce Tomato) Sandwich. When I think of bacon wrapped cheese curds, I think of greasy state fair type food. However, this was not the case, they were not overly greasy and I loved them. They were done perfectly and were served with a dipping sauce that complimented them well. The BSLT was also a pleasant surprise. The bacon in this sandwich is literally over half an inch thick (hence the baconsteak name). Being a BLT lover, I found their variation of the sandwich to be excellent. Service: The greeter at the entrance was very professional and cordial. She sat us immediately and also asked us how everything was upon our departure. The waiter was acceptable - I felt like he didn't quite know the menu yet - perhaps he was new - but he came to check in on us frequently. I look forward to going back to Pogreba to try some of the offerings in their dinner menu. It seems they have taken many standard midwestern dishes and put their own interesting and upscale spin on them. The result from my first experience was an pleasant surprise - I hope they can keep the quality in the long run.

Good atmosphere, they were able to make a big open space intimate and cozy. The food was very good. Steak was cooked to perfection. The bacon wrapped cheese curds with jalapeno was excellent. The two stars is for the service. Everything was fine until my mom received her bank statement. We were charged more than our bill. The waitress swore we bought a bottle of wine for another table. Really? Why would we do that. The manager, instead of satisfying (believing) the out of town customer, basically called my mom a liar and would not remove the charge. Stole $40. I will not be giving them anymore of my money.

Very disappointed with service and food. I had dinner here with my fiance on December 6th. The service was very slow. I ordered a full-rack of ribs and when they came out they looked burnt. The meat was as dry as shoe leather. I only ate a couple of bites. Our waitress asked me if I wanted a box the take remaining ribs home and I said no. The bill was $132 including 1 bottle of wine and tip. After we paid the waitress asked how we liked our meals. I told her the ribs were dry and she commented "oh thats to bad". Its to bad for Pogrebas because I won't be going here again

I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, my meal was awful I didn't even eat it and the server never asked if everything was ok. They say their "bacon wrapped" curds are amazing...I say not so much. My husbands drinks had to be sent back each time because it was made wrong, my friends mashed potatoes were cold...but again was never asked how the food was. Our bill...$92 for 2 people, and for what? I don't know. Will never go back! On a plus side...it is very nice inside, good decor.

Fabulous meal last night! Third time my wife and I have eaten at Pogreba and each time we leave impressed. By far the best tasting steak in La Crosse. Can't wait to try the Prime Rib, because I've heard great things.

Nice atmosphere...but... We went in for lunch on a Saturday, beautiful place and staff was very nice. Great beer selection, too. We each ordered a sandwich (steak and avocado melt with sweet potato fires and "stuffed" bacon cheeseburger with "seasoned" tots) and an appetizer to share. The appetizer, the bacon wrapped cheese curds were good. Our sandwiches came out and there is no salt/pepper or condiment on the table (any table), you must ask for it. The seasoned tots were not seasoned at all and at best were OreIda out of the fryer and the stuffed 1/2# burger was so over cooked that any stuffing that may have been in it was cooked to death and then cooked some more, I cannot remember seeing such an overcooked burger before, yikes. The steak and cheese melt was good as were the sweet potato fries, however a $50 lunch seems a little much in this town, especially when the food is mediocre.

My wife and I decided to give Pogreba a try. Although unusual, we liked the location of the restaurant. The North Side could use some nice establishments. The decor was very nice, high ceilings and a comfortable atmosphere. The only thing that seemed a little out of place were the high definition TV's that seemed to serve as a screensaver of some sort. The beer and wine menu was well stocked with familiar items. I didn't try one, but the Bloody Mary menu looked particularly interesting. The menu itself was also great, it wasn't cluttered with a million choices. Our server was polite and brought out some bread, oddly it was room temperature and a little tough. Seemed like it might have been sitting in back a while. We asked if he recommended anything and he said he had only eaten there once and just left it at that. He really didn't sell us on anything. We tried the Bacon-Wrapped Cheese Curds. They were good but a little rich. It was a pretty large appetizer for two people. We both opted for Caesar salads, the dressing was good, but the serving size seemed a bit small. They also had cheap croutons on top that were not impressive. They looked like they might have come out of a box of stove top. It was incongruous with the rest of the dish. I ordered the rib eye steak for dinner. The inside was perfectly cooked but the outside was a bit charred for my taste. I know some people like that but I am not into it. All in all my meal was above average for a steak in the area. My wife ordered the Shrimp with Lobster Ravioli, and this is where things got a bit weird. After being served, she noted there didn't seem to be any lobster in the ravioli and it didn't have any seafood flavor at all. She asked the server about it and was told that she was served the ravioli that they have. She was confused but decided she must have misread the menu. Unfortunately, when the bill came we noted we were charged for Lobster Ravioli. When we asked the server to explain, he noted that they sometimes will bill items under different titles if they are the same amounts. The server got a bit defensive when we pressed him harder so we decided to let it go. Sure enough, on the way out we looked at the menu and she had not misread the menu but was served the wrong dish. In their defense, the server was earnest and was trying to do a good job. He seemed confused and over his head. Instead of finding out the correct answer he became a bit defensive. All in all, the food and atmosphere were good but the service needs a lot of work. They are relatively new so I am looking forward to trying it a again when they have the bugs worked out and the servers trained better.

We went for lunch at this renovated spot, and enjoyed ourselves. The interior is beautiful, though it was confusing which door to enter! The service was fast, and the waiter was courteous. My companion enjoyed the vegetable and rice soup, and we both ordered the steak and avocado melt without buns (gluten issue on one side, preference on the other). The food was tasty, though the sandwich should have been labelled as "blackened" on the menu. I was expecting a grilled meat, and while it tasted good, it wasn't what I was hoping to eat. The sweet potato fries were good, but a bit dry. Overall, I'm willing to give the place another go, possibly in the evening to enjoy a beer.

I would have given Pogreba four stars but the service is really slow and the food takes forever so I had to give it 3. I have been to Pogreba twice. Both times were for lunch when the lunch rush was over (about 2:00). There was only two other tables in the restaurant but our food still took 45 minutes. We also had to wait for our drinks and drink refills. We had the beer battered bacon cheese curds which were good although I don't think the cheese is actually a curd. The mushroom burger was delish but the veggie sandwich was boring. All in all, the restaurants food is pretty good but the service is consistently slow, so I don't know if I will be back.
