Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Very busy, great food and great service. Came on for a quick dinner after work, the servers were on top of everything food came out quick and lots of it. Will be back soon.

We had the lunch buffet and the food was so bland as to be inedible. We tried putting salsa on it to spice it up, but the cold sauce did nothing for the lukewarm food. The serving trays were not refreshed very often--I couldn't make a salad because there was no lettuce. We won't be going back.

It's a middle of the road Mexican joint with middle of the road prices that leaves me feeling like...eh. A cross between a big Americanized chain and your hole in the wall taqueria, quasi authentic but won't get you sick. Stay away from the flavored margaritas which are loaded with syrup and lacking in tequila. Classic margarita on the rocks is the way to go.

I had queso fundido and a peach margarita. The margarita wasn't even stirred through because the juice was warm in the middle and all the liquor was on the sides, wow, lazy. And the cheese was orange American cheese, that's not Mexican!!! The decor is getting a little dated...it reminds me of Southwest Carribean?

The good: prompt service, great selection, and tasty menu. The bad: tables are somewhat close together, can get very noisey when there are rude parents with misbehaving children. The ugly: the bathrooms, while clean, could use some work.

As a family, we used to frequent this restaurant at least twice a week. The food from the kitchen is wonderful. We haven't been there for at least 6 - 8 months now. The place just does not feel clean anymore. The woven placemats are dirty from other people. The chip baskets don't seem clean. The tortilla baskets are dirty. The real clincher though was the lunch buffet. Kids were running around and sticking their bare hands in the food at the serving tables. They were grabbing out food, eating and reaching back in with their bare hands. Gross. We told our server and their parents -- and no one seemed to care. We haven't been back since. The owner is really nice and so are some of the servers. We might go back sometime and order from the menu. We will NEVER eat from the buffet again. YUK!! Food ordered from the menu has always been very good. We have problems with the cleanliness of the restaurant overall though. The same person ownes La Hacienda, and we have the same cleanliness concerns there also.

El Sarape is a nice lil spot to satisfy that Mexican food crave you get from time to time. The interior decor is pretty cool, the place looks and feels authentic. The food is reasonably priced and they are very attentive to you when you dine in. Looking forward to our next visit to El Sarape.

I wish I had read their reviews before going there. Will not be returning. First, I came in alone and with a book (hint hint), and even though there are only 5 tables in use, the girl seats me next to the table with 8-10 people, and a crying baby. Needless to say, I didn't get much studying done. The salsa is not very flavorful, and the pico de gallo is 75% onion. Not good. I ordered the Tamales plate, which means 4 of the driest tamales I have ever eaten, and a plate of dry rice and beans. The tamales were so dry that not even the husks were wet/moist anywhere. I had to put the pico de gallo juice on it, just to give them some texture to tamales. And finally, for flan, it's like hard jello. Not creamy, not tasty, not good. Taco Bell would have been a better experience.

I went in for the lunch buffet, and with the exception of the enchiladas, was very unhappy. Other reviewers hit the nail on the head when they said bland. Even the chips and salsa didn't have any flavor. The meat on the buffet was tasteless and the beans were like water. I went there a year ago and thought it was great. So, I'm not sure what accounted for the change, but I won't be back.

My original go to for good Mexican food. You can find lots of locals here having dinner which says a lot. The food is good here and the menu is big. There's something for everyone! I find the food can be inconsistent visit to visit. Wait staff are quite competent but not friendly, even though we go there frequently. They have 2 kinds of salsa and their guacamole is good, but not fantastic. The rice is flat boring, and the beans are - well, refried beans. A good stable place that's been around a long time.

We use to go here a lot, then other Mexican places were popping up in Kenosha that we have been going to. So anyway, we came back to eat here last night after a long hiatus. Have to say that the other reviewers are correct about the food being very bland! Didn't really notice it much before but to compare to other restaurants that we have been frequenting, we were really, really disappointed. Enough so, that after noticing quite a price hike, we won't be returning. My meal was their new fajitas al pastor, which in my opinion could have been A LOT more tender and also not at all flavorful. The pork had the consistency of a tough pork chop rolled around in some red seasoning mix. Not marinated at all. My husband had the combination Del Mar which is all seafood and he said same thing, no flavor at all!! Really!! So two meals that could have been prepared better by a gringo, and a pitcher of house margaritas (that we barely felt at the bottom) was 51.00 before tip! We still tipped 20% for the waitress because the service was good. Even though Kenosha sure can use a few more good non-chain restaurants, their Mexican competitors win out!

This is Wisconsin Mexican. It's edible, and probably a step above Taco Bell. Big appetites will appreciate the lunch buffet, which includes several styles of meat (beef, chicken, and pork), enchiladas, and desserts. Tortillas are warmed and served table side. My favorite from the buffet was probably the dessert taquitos--flour tortillas filled with apple pie filling and deep fried. Beverages- They apparently have a full bar. My mom and I ordered margaritas, which were quite obviously from a mix and weren't strong at all. Last I checked, lime juice isn't neon green. I probably wouldn't return on my own, but it's nice to know that Wisconsin is expanding their horizons.

Awesome lunch buffet. I was a skeptic at first, but yes - Mexican on a buffet can be good. A nice variety of fillings and shells/tortillas. Don's miss their chicken tenders - wonderful breading, all white meat. The best chicken fingers ever! And the little fruit filled desserts melt in your mouth! Great service and a quick lunch for very little $$$. Also try them for dinner. Great full menu.

My quest for Kenoshas best burrito took me here. It was not an authentic tasting Mexican burrito. American version of a burrito to appeal to the masses is more like it. It was not very tasty for a burrito. I decided against the lunch buffet to get a fresh to order meal and I can't imagine how the buffet would be any better.

There are ample portions and decent prices, but he flavor is lacking. They have salsa that is very thin no sauces on the tables. Adequate but not great.

If your in the mood for good mexican cuisine, this spot is for you. From enchiladas, to tamales, and even carne asada, this place has a huge menu to choose from. My personal favorite is their beef tongue tacos with sliced lime, cilantro, and onions. Simple and delicious. On a few occasions I have sampled their enchiladas and mole which were both great as well. They also make their own hot sauce available by request only, which is a wonderful. Expect big portions here for your money and a full stomach when you leave. If your looking for a good dinner spot for a little less cash, El Sarape is a great choice.
